Tour of Flanders 2023 route

The brutal cobbles and hills of Belgium's biggest race

Tour of Flanders 2023 route map

The 273.4km Tour of Flanders route over the cobbles and hills of Flanders towards Oudenaarde has few alterations from the 2022 route, so it's a game of spot the difference compared to last year.

This year's race is slightly longer, 900 metres more, and the race start has switched from Antwerp in the north to Brugge in the west. As a result, the run to the first major climb of the day at Oude Kwaremont is also changed, though viewers at home won't notice much substantive difference on the flat roads. A cobbled sector at Huisepontweg (seen recently at Dwars door Vlaanderen) and the day's first climb at Korte Ast are also new.

From that climb of Oude Kwaremont (2.2km at 4.6%) – the first of three visits during the race – after 136.5km, the route is more or less a carbon copy of 2022, barring the replacement of the Achterberg with the Eikenberg as the fourth hill of the day.

After the first ascent of Oude Kwaremont, the cobbled hills of the Eikenberg, Molenberg, and Berg Ten Houte are among the highlights of the eastern loop towards Zwalm and Brakel in the east and back around to the famous climb and its neighbour, the Paterberg.

Along the way, the tarmac climbs of the Kortekeer, Marlboroughstraat, Berendries, Valkenburg, and Kanarieberg also line the route along with cobbled sectors at Holleweg, Kerkgate, and Jagerij. It's an obstacle-packed mid-section of the route, even if the major race-altering moves come a little later on.

The second visit to the Oude Kwaremont, after 220km of racing, and the first to the Paterberg (360 metres at 12.9%), 3.5km later are where the action has really kicked off in the last few editions of the race.

In 2020 the key hills hosted the first major attacks from the favourites including Julian Alaphilippe , a year later it was eventual one-two finishers Kasper Asgreen and Mathieu van der Poel who showed themselves as the strongest as Wout van Aert led the chase behind, while last spring Tadej Pogačar sent contenders into a panic as his attack kicked off the finale.

That first Kwaremont-Paterberg duo, coming at around 15:30 local time, is the must-watch point of the afternoon, then. The equally famous Koppenberg (600 metres at 11.6%) is up next as the riders head onto the smaller loop to Maarkedaal and Ronse before the final run over Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg.

The 30km or so loop takes the riders over the cobbles of the Marieborrestraat and Stationsberg and the cobbled climbs of Steekbeekdries, Taaienberg, and Kruisberg/Hotond before the final showdown beginning at 17km from the line.

The final Oude Kwaremont-Paterberg challenge was controversial when first introduced all the way back in 2012 as the traditional finale of the Muur van Geraardsbergen-Bosberg duo was replaced when the finish moved from Ninove to Oudenaarde. But now it's a well-loved closing combination which has played host to several epic showdowns ahead of the final 10km run to the line.

What happens on that last stretch, a north-eastern run on the N453 from Kerkhove, can depend on the wind, though the flat, straight road often plays host to one last moment of tension with a final chase or cat-and-mouse games among the leaders. Finally, unlike the Champs-Elysèes or the Roubaix velodrome, it might not be the most iconic or picturesque end to one of the biggest races of the season, but the outskirts of Oudenaarde host the finish.

Profile & Route Tour of Flanders 2023

Profile. The Tour of Flanders - or Ronde van Vlaanderen - is the second monument of the season and the queen of the Flanders classics. Taking place in the Flemish region of Belgium, the race incorporates many of the most famous cobbled sectors and climbs in pro cycling .

272 kilometers on the menu this year. The distance will make for a brutal race, the Tour of Flanders has always been a race for the riders who are capable of performing on a bike at top level for a large number of hours and this year that capacity will be put to the limit. The start at Antwerpen will then see just a bit over 130 kilometers that are mostly set to be calm, approximately half of the race. However in the second half everything changes, as the Oude Kwaremont will open things up.

Estimated start and finish times for Tour of Flanders: 11:00 - 17:30CET.

PREVIEW | Tour of Flanders 2023 - Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogacar the big favourites

Brugge - Oudenaarde, 273.4 kilometers

From 137 to 88 kilometers to go there will be a long succession of bergs and cobbled sectors that will thin down the peloton. Big attacks will no happen here, as the main favourites need to save their bullets wisely, however set-up attacks, split attempts and a lot of fatigue buildup may happen here.

The crucial section of the race starts with the second passage over the Oude Kwaremont. Kwaremont, Paterberg and the Koppenberg come in quick succession and this trio of ascents will not only destroy the peloton, it will also provide opportunities to launch potentially decisive attacks. They come with 54.5, 51 and 44.5 kilometers to go. Not many riders will survive the peloton afterwards, and with a thinned down group decisive attacks can also come after as the chasing power will not be so meaningful.

Prize Money Tour of Flanders men's and women's - €20.000 for winners

Koppenberg: 600 meters; 13.3%; 44.5Km to go

Steenbeekdries (39Km to go), Taaienberg (36.5Km to go) and Oude Kruisberg (28Km to go) follow afterwards and provide further launching pads for dangerous attacks. After a small descent the race will enter it’s final sectors.

For the third and last time, the Oude Kwaremont. A grueling berg with inconsistent gradients, it summits with 16.5Km to go.

Final startlist Tour of Flanders with Pogacar, van Aert, van der Poel, Alaphilippe, Pidcock, Ewan, Sagan, Girmay and Mohoric

Oude Kwaremont: 2.5Km; 3.7%; 16.5Km

And after a short section, the final berg of the race is always one that may see the differences, the Paterberg. Short but sharp, essentially a one-minute all-out effort after around 6:30h of hard racing where slipstreaming is not a thing. A climb most will know like the back of their hand, it will summit with 13 kilometers to go.

TV Guide - Where and When to watch Tour of Flanders 2023

Paterberg: 400 meters; 13.5%; 13Km to go

As every year, the run-up to Oudenaarde then is quite excruciating. Pan-flat after the small descent from the Paterberg, it is a place where attacks can still happen, but whatever happens depends on what will happen over the ascents.

Advantage Mathieu van der Poel and Lotte Kopecky at the Tour of Flanders

Fans of the Tour of Flanders will be denied another showdown between Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease A Bike) this year, after the Belgian sustained multiple fractures in a heavy crash during Dwars door Vlaanderen.

It leaves Van der Poel as the clear favourite, with on-song Dane Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) stepping into the breach as the rider most likely to challenge the imperious Dutchman.

With reigning champion Tadej Pogačar from this year's startlist, the two men will feel more confident. But a Classics win is always reliant on a certain amount of luck, and Van der Poel and Pedersen certainly won't have it all their own way.

Meanwhile the women's race is also something of a clash of the titans, with two-time winner and defending champion Lotte Kopecky and her SD Worx-Protime team-mate forming a potent pairing who will nevertheless have to contend with the likes of Dwars door Vlaanderen winner Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease A Bike) and British hopeful Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm-firmenich PostNL) among others.

This year sees Antwerp take over from Bruges as the alternating host city of the race. The route remains broadly similar to previous years, with greater use of wider roads early on to help prevent crashes being the only change.

For the men, the first berg of 17 will be the Oude Kwaremont, tackled after 137km of racing, while the Wolvenberg at the 72km point is the first of 12 such tests in the women’s race. The Wolvenberg is where both men's and women's races converge, after which the climbs come thick and fast.

It's the final one-two punch of Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg that often proves the most decisive. Controversial when first devised in 2012, particularly as it meant the omission of the iconic Muur van Geraardsbergen, this finale has since won fans over with its own unique character, which is also influenced by the double punch of the long, gradual Kwaremont and the short yet ultra-steep Paterberg.

Tour of Flanders 2024 route

This year's men's race continues the annual trading game between Bruges and Antwerp, with the latter hosting the start on Sunday. Riders will find bigger roads than before waiting for them as they begin the long haul south-west towards berg country.

The fun begins with the first of three passes of the Oude Kwaremont, and the climbs come thick and fast after that as the race follows a spaghetti-like parcours around the hills of Flanders just south-east of the finish town of Oudenaarde. On the way they take in famous climbs including the Wolvenberg, Molenberg, Berendries and the Koppenberg on the way to a total 17 climbs, finishing with the one-two of the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg with 13 flat kilometres to the line.

The women begin in Oudenaarde, where both races finish. They first head north-east away from the city to complete a circuit of the flatter terrain around Zottegem, looping back towards Oudenaarde to begin the day's climbing at 72km with the Wolvenberg. A similarly serpentine route to that of the men sees them tackle a total 12 classified climbs, including the Molenberg, Berendries and the Koppenberg, along with that final Kwaremont/Paterberg one-two at the end.

Tour of Flanders 2024: Riders to watch

Mathieu van der Poel Alpecin-Deceuninck ***** The Dutch rider looks imperious this season – always at or near the head of affairs in every race he has ridden and with a win at the E3 Saxo Classic and second at Gent-Wevelgem under his belt already. He's had a mercurial last couple of seasons, but covered himself in glory in the Classics last year and seems to be set to repeat the feat this time around. The fact that Wout van Aert has now been ruled out – albeit in very unfortunate circumstances that VDP would not have wished for – won't exactly hurt his chances either.

Tiesj Benoot Visma-Lease A Bike *** With Benoot's team-mate and compatriot Wout van Aert recovering from a nasty crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen and other team-mates like Dylan Van Baarle having been ill, this could be Benoot's opportunity to step up from nearly man to winner at Flanders. He has been fifth here before – back in 2015 – and won Strade Bianche in 2018 . With a following wind and a bit of luck a podium, or even a win, here is not beyond him.

Mads Pedersen Lidl-Trek **** The Dane was third here last year and eighth the year before that. Considering that he seems to be in the form of his life – and the absence of one of his main Classics rivals, Wout van Aert – what's to say that Pedersen cannot finally achieve victory in what is one of the most revered one-day races of the season. Pedersen proves himself to be ever-more versatile, with overall wins in the Etoile de Bessèges and Tour de la Provence stage races, plus the more recent Gent-Wevelgem already this season.

Lotte Kopecky SD Worx-Protime ***** Of all the cards the Belgian team could play, right now Kopecky looks like the most likely to bring them success. She has been a playmaker in pretty much every race she has entered this season and already has four wins under her belt, including Strade Bianche . Riding alongside her, and even for her, will be at least four other potential victors – Demi Vollering, Marlen Reusser and Lorena Wiebes – ready to take over if Kopecky falters.

Elisa Longo Borghini Lidl-Trek **** The Italian has amassed a huge palmarès across Classics and stage races alike, despite spending most of her career riding in the company (under the shadow?) of greats like Annemiek van Vleuten and Anna van der Breggen. She has Lotte Kopecky to deal with these days, but that hasn't stopped the 32-year-old from putting in a solid shift so far this season already, with podiums at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Strade Bianche, and a win at Trofeo Oro in Euro.

Kasia Niewiadoma Canyon-SRAM **** The reigning gravel world champion was left heartbroken after missing out on a podium spot at Strade Bianche earlier this month. That was her most recent result, and one she may be eager to atone for at the Tour of Flanders this weekend. She was fifth here last year – the latest in a litany of top-10s stretching back 10 years. The Polish rider looks to be on form, with five top-seven finishes out of six race days this season, though there is of course the small matter of the SD Worx team standing between her and a win at Flanders.

After cutting his teeth on local and national newspapers, James began at Cycling Weekly as a sub-editor in 2000 when the current office was literally all fields.

Eventually becoming chief sub-editor, in 2016 he switched to the job of full-time writer, and covers news, racing and features.

A lifelong cyclist and cycling fan, James's racing days (and most of his fitness) are now behind him. But he still rides regularly, both on the road and on the gravelly stuff.

The Tour of Flanders brings the northern monuments to warp speed Sunday with arguably the greatest one-day race of the season.

Mathieu van der Poel and Lotte Kopecky line up in the rainbow bands as the five-star favorites in what will set the tone for two spectacular races.

Perhaps only Paris-Roubaix can surpass De Ronde for pure racing action, ultra-prestige, and high-level competition.

This year’s editions saw some late-hour drama, especially on the men’s side, with Wout van Aert set to miss the big date. On the women’s side, the unfolding contract talks about the future of Demi Vollering could play out on the roads this weekend.

Date : Sunday, March 31, 2024 Editions: 108th men, 21st women Start : Antwerp (men), Oudenaarde (women) Finish : Oudenaarde, both races Distance : 270.8km (men), 163km (women) Weather : 7C for start, 17C for finish. Defending champions : Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime)

The Tour of Flanders women's race finishes after the men's

TV listings: Plenty of options

Favorites men’s race: No Wout, no Pogačar

Two big names are missing, and their collective absences will mark the outcome of the race.

Van Aert crashed so heavily at Wednesday’s Dwars door Vlaanderen that the Belgian superstar saw his entire spring campaign, including Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, and Amstel Gold, over in an instant.

Other injuries and illness on the super squad could see Matteo Jorgenson, already on a hot streak this spring, emerging as the leader at Visma-Lease a Bike.

The other missing star is defending champion Tadej Pogačar, who is bypassing Flanders altogether. After ripping across the Volta a Catalunya , he races next at Liège-Bastogne-Liège before heading to the Giro d’Italia.

That puts Van der Poel, already on a tear so far in 2024, firmly in the driver’s seat as the five-star favorite.

The reigning world champion can also match a record. A third win would put him on the same number of wins as Buysse, Magni, Leman, Museeuw, Boonen, and Cancellara.

Right behind him will be banged up Mads Pedersen. The big Dane also crashed Wednesday, but wasn’t nearly as bad as his teammate Jasper Stuyven, who’s out with a broke clavicle.

Other big names include Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious), Alberto Bettiol (EF Education – EasyPost), Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates), Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility), and Matteo Trentin (Tudor Pro Cycling Team).

Who will win? Without Van Aert or Pogačar to complicate things, Van der Poel is the odds-on favorite.

Favorites women’s race: SD Worx the favorites

Lotte Kopecky

Lotte Kopecky currently shares the record of most wins in Flanders’ Finest with Mirjam Melchers-Van Poppel, Judith Arndt, and Annemiek van Vleuten

Joining Kopecky in Team SD Worx-Protime in Oudenaarde will be Marlen Reusser, Demi Vollering, and Lorena Wiebes, by far the deepest and strongest team in the race.

Lidl-Trek will be banging on the door, with Elisa Longo Borghini, Elisa Balsamo, Lizzie Deignan and Shirin Van Anrooij.

Marianne Vos is hot off a win at Dwars, with Canyon/SRAM Racing lining up with Katia Niewiadoma and Chloé Dygert bringing on the heat .

Kopecky has nearly been perfect so far this spring, and will be hard to beat.

A few key course changes for safety

There are a few significant changes for both courses.

After starting in Bruges last year, Antwerp will host the rollout Sunday, and the bunch will plow south straight toward the Flemish Ardennes. The finish of both races remains on the Minderbroedersstraat in Oudenaarde.

The modern classic finales of the Paterberg-Oude Kwaremont combo remains unchanged for both the men’s and women’s races, but there are a few tweaks for safety reasons, with wider and faster roads.

“The changes in the first 100 km are safety-related choices. We have been looking even further for wide roads so that the peloton has more space in which to build up speed,” said race director Scott Sunderland. “The edition from Bruges, where we carried out a similar exercise for the opening hours of the race, showed how these wide roads led to high averages in the opening hours. That speed ultimately helped to determine the shape of the race and the strategic choices of the teams.”

As everyone saw with the tragic consequences in the men’s Dwars door Vlaanderen , the Kanarieberg and Kortekeer have been removed from the route.

“On the way to Kortekeer, the speed is high and the pressure within the peloton is very high,” Sunderland said. “But then we have also seen in the past two years that a few teams decide to quietly ride up the Kortekeer. The question then is: why should we want such a narrow climb on the course so early in the race? Isn’t it better to take out the Kortekeer and keep the race open?”

WOUT VAN AERT crashes

The organization also took out the Kanarieberg and the high-speed approach that provoked the horrific crash Wednesday that took down Van Aert and a host of others.

“There is a direction along which we have to go to the Kanarieberg. That goes downhill and the peloton reaches a speed of 90 km/h. Whereupon the road narrows from three lanes to one,” he said. “When you talk about safety, you have to look at it seriously.

“We have analyzed the editions of recent years. We looked at whether someone who attacked on the Kanarieberg or the Kortekeer ever stayed ahead. So no one.”

The race really starts to kick off at the Koppenberg, about 45km from the finish.

Unlike in previous years, the men and women will be taking the same route to the Bult van Melden this year.

“We have opted to change the approach for the men and to make it the same as the one for the women,” Sunderland said. “A choice for equality, but above all for reasons of safety. To be specific, this change means that after the first climb of the Paterberg, the riders will cycle on roads where it is easier to keep track of things. We are making the approach to the Koppenberg more straightforward and are taking out the descent and sharp bend just before the climb.”

With this change, the cars in the women’s race can follow the same detour as for the men’s race and team leaders can assist their riders all the way to the foot of the Koppenberg. With this change, the organization is eliminating a few points where the race had threatened to stall in recent years, something that caused a race stoppage in Wednesday’s Dwars race for the women.

“These situations were becoming too dangerous,” Sunderland said. “Safety is our highest priority. Furthermore, we also want to adapt our course to the way in which the peloton races. We want to anticipate and continue to develop the Tour to better serve the riders. And that is what we are doing with this change, but it does mean that both the Kortekeer and the Kanarieberg will not be included in the course this year. But we are adding the Kapelleberg.”

Americans in Flanders: A rare presence

Coryn Labecki

Here’s a good trivia question for your next group ride: name the only U.S. rider to win the Tour of Flanders.

The answer is only one: Coryn Labecki in 2017, when she out-kicked Gracie Elvin and Chantal Van den Broek-Blaak in a reduced bunch sprint with Team DSM.

Kristin Armstrong was twice second (2008 and 2012) as the only other U.S. women to hit the prestigious podium.

On the men’s side, no American has ever won De Ronde, and George Hincapie finished third in the 2006 edition as the only U.S. men’s podium in race history.

Expected U.S. starters Sunday include Chloé Dygert (Canyon-SRAM), Ruth Edwards and Lily Williams (Human Powered Health), Labecki and Kristin Faulkner (EF Education-Cannondale), and Heidi Franz (Lifeplus Wahoo).

Men’s starters Sunday include Dwars door Vlaanderen winner Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers), and Riley Sheehan (Israel Premier Tech). Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), fifth last year in a breakout ride, is sidelined with injury .

Can one of them break through?

Tour of Flanders 2023

The Tour of Flanders is the alpha and omega of Flemish the cycling classics . Proud villages of the Ronde fill up, neighborhoods around the famous climbs overflow, viptents fill up. The kegs of Kwaremont are unstoppable. All of Flanders will stand still for a day on Sunday, April 2, 2023. Because then it is time for the Tour of Flanders 2023!

Contenders & Favorites Tour of Flanders 2023

While the Belgians (rightly?) put forward their Wout van Aert as the man to beat, we consider Mathieu van der Poel the favorite for the 2023 Tour of Flanders. Even Flemish analyst Michel Wuyts – who normally does not hide his enthusiasm for Van Aert – indicated in Het Laatste Nieuws’s podcast Wuyts & Vlaeminck that in his eyes Van der Poel has a 70% chance of winning Sunday. But one thing is for sure, the Tour of Flanders is tailor-made for MVDP. Like no other he thrives on the many obstacles that succeed one another in a short time, his recuperation ability is unparalleled. With a fourth, first, second and first place finish respectively, the defending champion has the best credentials. Who will beat Mathieu van der Poel in the Tour of Flanders 2023? Who is going to win the Ronde van Vlaanderen 2023 ?

Then you end up with two men. Starting with Wout van Aert. “ Ik moet just niks ” he said after the E3 Saxo Classic. Referring to the many criticisms he got and still gets in Flanders. Grateful for their new cycling god? No, critical to the bone. Be it cycling analysts Dirk de Wolf or José de Cauwer, or former pro riders Johan Museeuw and Tom Boonen. The pressure for Wout van Aert in his homeland is unprecedented. All pointed to his age and the gaps on his palmares. Winning mountain stages, time trials and sprints in the Tour de France? Allee, das mooi. But it’s about the Monuments or the rainbow jersey. This year everything has to make way for either the Tour of Flanders or Paris-Roubaix. After his resounding victory in the E3, where he beat both Matje and Pogi, his confidence and morale are high again. Add to that the supremacy in Ghent-Wevelgem and you can say that Wout is ready for the Ronde.

Say Van der Poel and Van Aert this cycling spring – you automatically say Tadej Pogačar! The Slovenian is the embodiment of the opulence we cycling fans know anno 2023. A Tour de France winner competing for prizes in the Tour of Flanders. As if it were the most normal thing in the world. One thing is clear. Just wait unto the second of third passage on the mighty Oude Kwaremont. Tadej Pogačar is definitely going to attack over there!

Behind these three bikes, we assign Matej Mohoric the most chances. Where Kasper Asgreen surprised friend and foe in 2021 by knocking off Van der Poel at the finish line on the Minderbroedersstraat – who won’t be surprised if Mohoric does a Devolderke? Back to 2009. Where Fabian Cancellara, Tom Boonen or Filippo Pozzato were the favorites, Stijn Devolder ran with it. The Bahrain-Victorius hard rider is having an excellent spring and is also made for the Flemish cobblestones. He has made Paris-Roubaix his absolute goal, but watch out. Do not forget the strong Slovenian.

Mads Pedersen gets the final star from us. The 2019 Harrogate world champion finished very handsomely second in the 2018 Tour of Flanders edition won by Niki Terpstra, knows how to pick up speed over the cobblestones and is quick on the arrivee. But the big question for both Mohoric and also Pedersen is going to be: how do we beat The Big Three?

Then the dark horses. We start with the Groupama-FDJ classmates Stefan Küng and Valentin Madouas. Like Mohoric, Küng says that Paris-Roubaix is even better for him, so he will want to improve on his second place from last year. But don’t forget, the Swiss rider finished fifth here last year and also showed in the E3 Saxo Classic that he is in good shape again with a sixth place. Should you play him in the Scorito pool, include him in your queue in the coming Sundays. Should you write him down only once in your prognostication, save him for Roubaix. Someone you can then include on Sunday is his teammate Madaous. Finished eighth in the same E3 last Friday and made his breakthrough in the cobbles last year. Seventh in the E3, 11th in Waregem and third in the Ronde. Can Madoaus repeat this feat, if not do better?

The team of Jumbo-Visma is so strong, that most at other teams were all leaders. And each of them would deserve a strong one. Dylan van Baarle. Christophe Laporte. Tiesj Benoot. So are they all dark horses? At least Van Baarle and Laporte are. The lieutenants, in the pecking order behind leader Van Aert, will want to break open the race early. All in service of course. But you never know how it will turn out. Helper Benoot, who was strong on Wednesday in Dwars door Vlaanderen, could also end up short if things go unusually well. The motto is Winning Together. You never know!

While Soudal-Quick Step are hoping for a resurrection of Julian Alaphilippe, INEOS Grenadiers are counting on Tom Pidcock. The big questions: is Juju strong enough? To what extent is Pidcock really back to 100% match fitness? Behind Pidcock, Filippo Ganna and Ben Turner are also men to reckon with at INEOS.

Favorites Ronde van Vlaanderen 2023 according to Wieler-Koers.nl:

***** Mathieu van der Poel **** Wout van Aert *** Tadej Pogačar ** Mads Pedersen * Matej Mohoric Dark horses: Stefan Küng, Valentin Madoaus, Dylan van Baarle, Tom Pidcock, Julian Alaphilippe

Tour of Flanders 2024: The Route

Following a flat run-up, in which the home crowds are thrown into a cycling frenzy of eager anticipation, the riders get a first taste of cobbles after 104 kilometres. The pavé on the Lippenhovenstraat and Paddestraat appear in quick succession, but, to be frank, the first half of the race is nothing special. It’s the simple fact that De Ronde is on its way that gives the race its edge at this stage.

The riders tackle the first climb exactly halfway. After the Oude Kwaremont the riders continue to the Kappelleberg and from then on the race intensifies. The cobbles of Holleweg roll out a somewhat rugged red carpet for a section with the Wolvenberg, more cobbles (Kerkgate and Jagerij), Molenberg, Marlboroughstraat, Berendries and Valkenberg. All these obstacles are crammed together within 15 kilometres.

There is still 86 kilometres to go after the Valkenberg. A relatively calm phase of 32 kilometres – with only Berg Ten Houte and Nieuwe Kruisberg/Hotond – makes way for a brutal finale.

The Tour of Flanders really is on fire when the riders tackle the Oude Kwaremont/Paterberg combo for the first time. This is an exciting phase with Koppenberg, the cobbles of the Mariaborrestraat, Steenbeekdries, the cobbles of the Stationsberg, and Taaienberg in rapid succession. To be precise, within 20 kilometres.

With 29 kilometres left the riders tackle the Oude Kruisberg/Hotond before the Oude Kwaremont makes its last appearance inside the final 20 kilometres. The cobbled climb is 2,200 metres long and averages 4%, while the Paterberg is quite the opposite. Only 360 metres long, but definitely a killer with its average gradient of 12.9% and ramps up to 20.3%.

The last 13.2 kilometres of the Tour of Flanders are flat.

Last year, Tadej Pogacar began early with the demolition works. He dropped his rivals for the first time in the penultimate ascent of the Oude Kwaremont – so, with still 55 kilometres remaining. Following a regroupment the Slovene again put pressure on the Koppenberg. Only Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert were able to match this move, but the two were left in the ropes when Pogacar tightened the screws on the last time up the Oude Kwaremont and powered his way to victory.
