Repositioning cruises 2024 and 2025: Save money with these unusual itineraries

Kristine Hansen

Looking for a cruise where you can truly kick back and take advantage of onboard amenities without getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of a different port of call every day? Consider a repositioning cruise.

Repositioning cruises are the name for one-way sailings that bring the ship to a new home port or a different part of the world to kick-start a new cruise season. Because these sailings often cross oceans, you'll likely experience ports in more than one cruise region — and have ample sea days to take advantage of the spa, dining and entertainment options on board.

All the major cruise lines offer the occasional repositioning cruises, typically on ships that usually sail in destinations with shorter seasons, such as Alaska or the Mediterranean . Here, we answer all your questions about repositioning cruises.

What is a repositioning cruise?

Cruise ships chase warm and sunny climates, so they often move, or "reposition," from one part of the world to another when chilly weather sets in. Cruise lines don't want to sail a ghost ship, one carrying only crew and no passengers, across the ocean because it's wasting an opportunity to earn money. They have figured out that by discounting rates, they can fill the cabins on these oddball itineraries.

Repositioning cruises are never round-trip sailings. Your origin and destination cities — or, in cruise-speak , embarkation and disembarkation ports — will not be the same. You might sail out of Florida and arrive in Barcelona or Southampton, England, allowing you to explore two continents on one vacation. Or, you might simply sail from Boston to Florida or from San Diego to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Repositioning cruises are known for having a greater-than-average number of days spent at sea, but it's not as if you never get off the ship. On a transatlantic sailing , port stops could be in Spain's Canary Islands or Portugal's Azores islands. A repositioning cruise from Southern California to Vancouver before the Alaska cruise season might sail up the Pacific Coast and visit cities like San Francisco and Astoria, Oregon.

Another aspect that makes a repositioning cruise different from a typical sailing is that many of these itineraries are longer than a week. (This is by design. It takes longer to sail from Florida to Europe than it does to sail to and from the Caribbean .) Still, there is a lot of flexibility, just as with booking any cruise. The shortest you'll find is four or five days (for example, Southern California to Vancouver) and the longest is around 28 nights (yes, almost an entire month, usually between continents).

Are repositioning cruises one-way?

Yes, repositioning cruises are one-way voyages that start in one region and end in another. Because they happen when a cruise ship switches destinations based on seasonality, these sailings often involve travel to a different part of the world, which can result in many consecutive days at sea.

Where and what time of year do cruise ships reposition?

The good news is you can book a repositioning cruise nearly six months out of the year, spanning mid-spring and mid-fall months, which are the cruise lines' shoulder seasons.

Because repositioning cruises are not all tied to the same destination, this only widens your options in terms of geography. To envision where these will sail and when, you need to know a destination's cruise season.

Take Europe as an example. The majority of Mediterranean and Baltic sailings take place in the spring through the early fall. Europe-based ships flee the region during the winter, spending November through March in the warm Caribbean. Therefore, a ship will need to travel from the Caribbean to Europe in spring and return to the Caribbean by fall. Look for transatlantic repositioning cruises during those changeover months.

Some ships stay in the Caribbean year-round and only reposition when the cruise line chooses to move them to a different home port. However, ships sailing short seasons in Alaska, South America, Canada/New England and Europe will always be repositioned at least twice a year.

Due to increased cruise itineraries in the Middle East and Asia over the last decade, you might also find a repositioning cruise departing or returning to either of those regions. For example, MSC Cruises offers cruises from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to Genoa, Italy, in April prior to sailing European itineraries in the spring and summer. Just be prepared to be away from home for a long time. The aforementioned sailing lasts about three weeks — a long trek through the Suez Canal, connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, by way of Egypt.

Note: Many cruise lines have canceled or altered their 2024 Middle East itineraries due to unrest in the region.

What happens on a repositioning cruise?

On many repositioning cruises, you will not get off the ship as often as you might on a typical sailing because there are no ports in the middle of the ocean you're crossing. These itineraries often feature a string of sea days, so be prepared to spend more time and money on board.

Some people love port-intensive cruises so they can quickly check off a list of countries and only unpack once. But if you prefer leisurely, lazy days, then a transoceanic repositioning cruise might be your ticket to utopia. This huge stretch of time is a great opportunity to crack open books you've been meaning to read, launch into a knitting project or finally have time for daily workouts.

Programming — such as comedy nights, fitness classes, boutique shopping, art auctions, wine tastings and evening shows — are as much a part of a repositioning cruise as any other sailing, only you might be able to take in a whole lot more than you normally would. Some cruise lines organize themed sailings or invite guest lecturers on board for extra sea day activities.

You also might want to consider springing for a cruise line's all-inclusive beverage package on a repositioning cruise. You'll get better value than usual from the price because you'll be ordering most of your drinks on board due to fewer port stops.

Another worthwhile splurge is a balcony cabin . You'll have easy access to fresh air without the top-deck crowds and can enjoy the romance of gazing out at the seemingly endless ocean. Just be sure to pack a sweater or sweatshirt because shoulder seasons in these climates are not necessarily sunbathing weather.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a repositioning cruise?

When you book a repositioning cruise, you'll likely be on board for at least two weeks, allowing enough time for the ship to sail between where it's currently based and its new home port. Sometimes the voyage can be even longer, and it's likely you won't have more than five or six port stops during that time.

That means lots of days on board, many of them consecutive. It's an advantage for anyone who enjoys relaxing at sea and doesn't mind exploring the ship for days at a time without touching land; it's a disadvantage for anyone who sees cruises as merely transportation to explore new places.

An advantage of repositionings is the price, which is often cheaper than what you'd pay for a round-trip sailing of the same length or which has more port days built into the schedule. However, the cost of the potentially expensive one-way or open-jaw flights needed before and after a repositioning cruise could eat up most of the money you'd save by booking that type of voyage.

Do you need a passport for a repositioning cruise?

Yes. The only time you don't need a passport to cruise is if you're booked on a closed-loop sailing — a voyage that departs from and returns to the same port within the U.S. Since repositioning cruises don't leave from and return to the same port, the exception won't apply, and you'll need a passport in order to board the ship.

Are repositioning cruises cheaper than other cruises?

It depends on the sailings to which you're comparing them, but repositioning cruises are often relatively affordable. Even though repositioning sailings can often be two to three weeks in length, you might find that they're less expensive than a regular weeklong voyage that begins and ends in the same port of call. That's because repositioning cruises offer mostly sea days, during which you'll be enjoying the ship instead of lounging on the beach or exploring museums.

How to score repositioning cruise deals

repositioning cruise to asia

More often than not, a repositioning cruise is a good deal because it costs much less per night than a typical sailing. This is because the one-way, sea day-heavy itineraries are less desirable to the majority of cruisers, and they take place during slower travel seasons.

Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

Travelers who live near the embarkation or debarkation ports can save even more by only having to buy a one-way plane ticket rather than a full round trip.

Repositioning cruises can be tricky to find on booking sites. They often are referred to as repositioning cruises or transatlantic or transpacific cruises. When ships reposition between ports in the U.S. and Canada, the one-off one-way itineraries might not be labeled anything special beyond Caribbean or Pacific Coast cruises.

Not all of the cruise line or online travel agency booking pages have an option to check a box and search for repositioning cruises. If you can't find what you're looking for, do an online search for the term and the cruise line you wish to sail. Even better, call a travel agent or the cruise line's booking staff directly, and they can help you find the repositioning cruise that's best for you.

RepositionCruises.com has all Repositioning Cruises 2024-2025-2026 schedule as dates and itineraries officially announced by the world’s major cruise lines. here you’ll get your answers to questions like “What is a Repositioning Cruise”, what are the best destinations, how cheap are the prices, which are the best lines and ships, how to find them, why and when to take them, what are the benefits and disadvantages, what are the best or cheapest routes.

Some of our relocation cruise itineraries are the first transition voyages of the companies’ newest vessels (inaugurated in 2024-25). Another very useful information we provide is about the company’s itinerary changes in destinations/ports, operational regions/deployment, homeports (turnaround / departure ports). Whatever the reposition voyages might be as types, be sure that you’ll get the best-price ship travel deals to some of the world’s best-known vacation destinations!

Note: RepositionCruises.com selects the relocation itineraries from the ship schedules available at CruiseMapper.com .

What is a “Repositioning Cruise” (definition)

“Repositioning Cruise” is a one-off sea/ocean voyage that cruise passenger ships make when transferring from one operational region to another. Usually, this is done in Spring and Fall, often each year. But there are some exceptions to these “usual times”. Your off-season vacations will be marked by discounted cheap rates, big (yet not crowded) cruise ships, lots of “lazy leisure days” to enjoy the tranquillity of the sea.

Ship relocation deals are the preferable option for “highly addicted” travelers to enjoy a truly special and most affordable sea cruising vacation. The special ship relocation voyages always feature a one-way itinerary (connecting different embarkation and disembarkation ports) since cruise ships relatively often change their sailing areas due to economic reasons.

Another prominent feature of all these “ship transition cruises” deals is the bargain price – they all are really really cheap in comparison to the ship’s regular cruise rates. Repositioning deals are rarely called that way by travel agents or in companies’ brochures. One of the most popular substitute names officially used by the industry’s representatives is “Discovery Voyage”.

The list of synonyms for repositioning voyages includes: “Relocation Cruises”, “Transit-” or “Transition Cruises”, “Crossings” (also with “Eastbound” and “Westbound”). Of course, the most traditional (by definition) is “One-Way”, and also by destination – “Panama Canal”, “Suez Canal”, “Transpacific” and “Transatlantic”.

The reasons to book a relocation voyage are so many. These special offers are “different” voyages that offer unique opportunities like Atlantic Ocean crossings, visiting and sailing Alaska, Hawaii, and transiting Suez Canal and Panama Canal’s new locks (a true engineering miracle).

When considering this unique type of travel vacation-themed as “Repositioning Cruises”, know that it’s all about long and exciting voyages, transiting famous canals, crossing the world’s biggest oceans. You’ll be most probably sailing coast to coast, often from one sea to another. It’s about comfort and impeccable service on some of the world’s best cruise liners. It’s about all the fun you can get on up to 3-week transitions visiting different continents, changing cold with warm climates. It’s about a resort-type swimming pool and Jacuzzi experiences, gourmet cuisine, bingo and casino thrills, onboard duty-free shopping. Some ships even offer rock climbing, surfing, Zip-lining, hovering, and ice-skating at sea.

Why take reposition cruises?

  • It’s a longer (often Transoceanic) voyage
  • The itinerary has only a few ports of call. Destinations are from the “special and exotic” category, featuring Africa, South America, Transatlantic and Transpacific, US East Coast and the Caribbean, often Asia and Australia.
  • Top-option for “best fun” experiences on bigger passenger ships, with a lot more sea days than on a normal voyage.
  • Irresistibly cheap rates – most affordable to cheap cruise rates on both mainstream and top luxury ships when they relocate in Spring and Fall each year.
  • These are all low-season discounted deals on alluringly low-priced cruises.

Still, whoever is blessed with enough free time and an adventurous spirit may enjoy each year at least one of the not-so-many repositioning cruise ships.

Repositioning cruise – examples, benefits, disadvantages

  • Passenger ships sailing during the hot summer in Alaska relocate in the Fall to the Caribbean Sea region through Panama Canal, or to Hawaii and then to Australia or Asia for their winter seasons.
  • Ships from Northern Europe sail to the Mediterranean Sea or across the Atlantic Ocean to operate roundtrip itineraries leaving from USA ports (Florida and New York mostly) or to the Caribbean for round-trips from Barbados or Puerto Rico.
  • Ships move from South America to Florida (for the Caribbean) or Transatlantic to Europe (Baltic or Mediterranean) in early Spring.
  • Search for ships sailing along Africa’s east coast. In the Fall they will be departing from UK (Southampton, mainly) to South Africa (Cape Town or Durban). In spring they will return (usually departing from Cape Town) to the UK or the Mediterranean. Such sailings are offered mainly by MSC and luxury ships.
  • They are cheap! The lower to absolutely cheapest price is the most important factor for the popularity of these special deals. The average cost of a repositioning cruise is up to 50% less compared to a typical round-trip sailing from the same port. And the best index is the “Price Per Person Per Day” – it could be as low as USD 40!
  • All relocation cruises offer a full set of entertainment and dining options onboard – they are just like the regular ones. This is the perfect chance to sample all the stuff on board since you are going to spend so much time at sea. There are even more onboard activities while ships reposition! The list of the “bonuses” includes guest lecturers, top comedians, and numerous themed activities and games to entertain guests.
  • And yes – the repositioning cruise ships are almost always not crowded.

Disadvantages

  • Too much time aboard the ship instead of visiting different ports of call (sea intensive as opposed to port intensive). Some find it pretty boring.
  • Embarkation and disembarkation not in the same port increase the expenses as to additional flight fares added to the cruise ticket price.
  • Spending a lot of time aboard the ship might tempt you to enjoy more “money spending fun” by splurging on bar drinks and gambling in the casino.
  • The duration of relocation cruises – some last up to 18 days, and most people cannot afford so much time off work.
  • You may experience an occasional “bumpy ride” due to rough waters (especially on smaller ships), and often “choppy weather” as your ship transits from one part of the globe to another. The “changing weather” issue will also have an impact on your packing list.

What time of year are the cheapest Repositioning Cruises?

Most of them are operated in Spring and Fall. Some exceptions are a few ship relocation itineraries in late-August, and some very rare very late re-position sailings in December, January, or February. The best and most busy months with readily available and cheap relocation cruise deals are April-May and September-October.

What are the best Repositioning Cruises?

When it happens that you have to choose what is the best, there’s this rule number one stating “expect the best from the best”. When you book on major cruise line ships, expect cheap rates, best value for money indices, lots of vessels in the fleet to choose from, great destinations, and service. The biggest companies and operators with regularly offered reposition voyages are Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, NCL-Norwegian, Costa, MSC, RCI-Royal Caribbean. Carnival and Disney also do ship transitions moving ships between Alaska and Australia (Caribbean).

All these company decisions are made with economic considerations in mind. Companies do cruise ship repositioning to improve profits by departing from different homeports or to more attractive destinations.

Some of the companies relocate vessels each year crossing the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and the USA (Florida, New York, Boston) or South America (Brazil, Argentina).

Some ships reposition between Alaska and Australia (Transpacific) or between Alaska and Florida (with Panama Canal transits). Some lines offer to transit through Suez Canal on repositioning between Europe and Asia (the Red Sea or East Asia).

So what you gotta do is choose a destination and departure port. If you are a big fan of a particular company – just search its page here – it is that simple. If you ask “the best of the best” not as best prices, but rather as experiences, the simple answer to this question is “luxury cruises”. Generally, luxury cruise deals offer smaller ship cruise travel marked by sophisticated, all-inclusive, superb service experiences.

The list of top luxury lines includes Crystal, Seabourn, Azamara, Oceania. The more “affordable luxury” brands are Cunard, Celebrity, Princess, Holland America. If you love budget travel, save money and book deals on Carnival, RCI-Royal Caribbean, Costa, MSC – the cheapest of them all. Of course, the savings you can always spend on “ship drinks”, onboard gambling, Spa-beauty treatments and whatnot – the choice is always yours to make!

How much do repositioning cruises cost?

It depends on the itinerary as destination and length, but a one-way Transatlantic could cost as little as USD 60 Per Person per day (double occupancy, fares inclusive of taxes and fees). You might pay 50% or even less for a one-way reposition cruise than the normal price for a round-trip with multiple ports of call. What adds to these low prices is your one-way return flight fare. Still, you may purchase a cheap fly-cruise package with the flight fare included in the total price and a convenient departure from major US ports to the UK or the Mediterranean’s biggest port cities – Civitavecchia-Rome, Barcelona, and Venice being among the cheapest end-points. The same goes for Hawaii and Alaska. Never forget that almost all relocation cruises are operated in low season, so buying a discount cheap cruise and stay packages is always a quite reasonable option. You’ll be able to enjoy a budget-friendly off-season vacation to not-so-crowded places in some of the most charming and colorful seasons – the always new lush-luxuriant Spring and the melancholic-romantic Fall.

Repositioning

Rock-bottom prices, varied itineraries and a large number of relaxing days at sea are all unique characteristics of a Repositioning cruise. Usually offered in the fall and spring months, this interesting cruise option allows you to journey to uncommon and even exotic ports of call as a cruise ship relocates to a new region.

Whether you're a seasoned traveler looking to visit new ports of call or a cruise novice interested in an unbelievable deal, a Repositioning cruise will give you a unique opportunity to embark on an out-of-the-ordinary journey to see multiple destinations and sometimes different continents of the world. The most common itineraries feature sailings from Alaska to Hawaii or Transatlantic voyages from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean in the fall, or the reverse in the spring, although there is an endless combination of itineraries periodically offered throughout the year as ships move from region to region around the globe. Spend days relaxing onboard resort-style ships as you cruise to or from seasonal cruise regions like Bermuda, Alaska, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Panama Canal, Hawaii and Asia, stopping to explore ports of call along the way.

  • Repositioning cruises primarily operate during the spring and fall months when ships are relocating to and from major cruise regions, although these cruises are offered periodically throughout the year.
  • Repositioning cruises vary greatly in length. Most are longer than a week, lasting at least 10 nights.
  • Repositioning cruises leave from major departure ports all over the world, among them are Miami, London, Rome, Buenos Aires and Anchorage. You will have to arrange one-way air to the port of embarkation and from the port of disembarkation. If you must fly a very long distance to reach your port of departure, we suggest that you arrive at the port city at least one or two days in advance of your Repositioning cruise. This will give you time to rest and get oriented before boarding the ship. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise hotel packages.

Marella Repositioning Cruises

AD – This post is sponsored by Marella Cruises

Have you ever considered a repositioning cruise for your winter 2024 holiday? If you haven’t you should, and we will explain why!

What is a Repositioning Cruise?

Repositioning cruises are when a cruise ship sails from one region to another, e.g Mediterranean to Asia or Europe to the Caribbean. We have now been on 48 cruises and one of the best cruises we have ever done was on Marella Cruises  Marella Discovery  cruise ship which started in Naples, Italy and ended in Dubai.

Repositioning cruises have some very unique itineraries and are often cheaper than round trip cruises. Also another reason we keep choosing to cruise with Marella is that there is so much included in your cruise fare , and there are no hidden costs like other cruise lines.

We have now cruised with Marella Cruises seven times and are already looking to book the eighth. There are some really good options available for Winter 2024 on Marella repositioning cruises, so we thought we would share those with you here!

Aegean Escape 1

This Aegean Escape 1 cruise is a 8 night cruise on the Marella Discovery 2  all Inclusive cruise which starts in Limassol, Cyprus.

The cruise then continues to Alanya, Turkey. Found on Turkey’s central Mediterranean coast and known as the Turkish Riviera its beautiful wide beaches include Cleopatra beach where the queen of Egypt was believed to have swam, it’s also famous for its castle and red tower. Haifa (for Nazareth & Galilee) Israel is next (due to current affairs this port could change), then you will experience a two day transit of one of the most iconic canals in the world, the Suez Canal, Egypt.  Your cruise will end with an over night stay in Aqaba in Jordan where you will have the option to visit Petra.

As we said earlier in this post we have now cruised 49 times and Petra is easily the most spectacular excursions we have ever done, so do check out our Red Sea Cruise Vlogs here  to see our experience.

petra jordan paul and carole

Arabian Sunset 1

This all inclusive Arabian Sunset 1 cruise also on the Marella Discovery 2 is a 14 night itinerary which starts in Aqaba (for Petra) with an overnight stay.

Port Sultan Qaboos (for Muscat), Oman is your first stop before cruising to Mumbai the largest city in India, formally known as Bombay. Famous for the gateway of India stone arch built by the Raj nearly a century ago, and Elephanta Island holds ancient cave temples dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The city’s also famous as the heart of the Bollywood film industry.

You will then visit Mormugao in India before arriving in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Must see places here include the Gangaramaya temple which is widely considered to be one of the most important temples in Colombo, demonstrating a mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture, and the Lotus Tower which is Sri Lanka’s tallest building and at night is quite spectacular.

TUI All Inclusive as standard cruises

Eastern Adventures 1

This 14 night Eastern Adventures 1 cruise on Marella Discovery 2 starts with an overnight stay in Colombo, Sri Lanka, before cruising to Sabang, Indonesia.

The next port is Langkawi, Malaysia which since 2007 was given a world geopark status by UNESCO for it’s main conservation areas and must see places include the inclined cable car called SkyGlide and a walk across the Sky Bridge that allows you to walk above the rainforest.

The cruise also stops at Port Klang (for Kuala Lumpur), Malaysia, before spending overnight in Singapore . We have travelled around Asia extensively and we think it is one of the most interesting destinations. To highlight things to do and see in Singapore would probably take up most of this post so to narrow it down our must do’s are, visit Marina Bay Sands Hotel and go up to the observation deck for fabulous views, go to Jumbo’s in Clarks Quay for some famous Chilli Crab and walk around the fabulous Gardens by the Bay!

The cruise then takes you to Laem Chabang in Thailand, where you can visit Bangkok, then Phu My for Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam before heading back to Singapore to disembark.

Atlantic Affair

The Atlantic Affair 14 night cruise on the Marella Discovery , starts in Palma, Majorca. The cruise then takes you to Gibraltar, famous for its very cheap shopping and the very naughty monkeys that live there. Then it is on to Madeira, the home of the crazy wicker basket toboggan run where you are propelled down a hill in a sledge made out of bamboo, but only if you want to!

This cruise then crosses the Atlantic ocean and visits Phillipsburg, St Maarten, before heading to Point-A-Pitre in Guadeloupe. For all of you Death in Paradise fans this will be a real treat! The cruise then finishes in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Exotic Escape 1

The Exotic Escape 1 cruise is on Marella Explorer 2 , where you will spend 18 nights on an all inclusive basis starting in the Canary Islands at Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

Las Palmas Gran Canaria is your next port before cruising across the Atlantic Ocean. Your first Caribbean port is St Johns in Antigua, the birthplace of legendary West Indian cricketer Sir Viv Richards. Antigua also boasts so many beaches that you can actually visit a different one every day of the year.

Basseterre, St Kitts is the next port, dominated by the volcano Mount Liamuiga which has lain dormant for over 1800 years and has a population of less than 50,000 people.

After St Kitts Pointe-A-Pitre, Guadeloupe, you will visit Phillipsburg in St Maarten where a visit to Maho beach is a must as when aeroplanes come in to land they are just metres above your head and Road Town in the British Virgin Islands.

Amber Cove, in the Dominican Republic will be your next man made area with a large swimming pool, shopping and a zip wire. Your next cruise port will be Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands before finishing your cruise in La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Voyage to Paradise

On the Voyage to Paradise cruise you will join the Marella Voyager for a 11 night cruise which starts in Malaga, Costa del Sol, Spain. Malaga is probably best known for its Art Culture and is the birthplace of Spain’s most famous artist Pablo Picasso.

You will then cruise to Gibraltar before arriving in Funchal in Madeira. Your cruise then takes you across the atlantic ocean and visits Castries, St Lucia. Castries is the birthplace of not one but two Nobel Prize winners, Arthur Lewis in 1979 for economics and Derek Walcott in 1992 for literature. Landmarks include the cathedral of the Immaculate Conception which can be found in Derek Walcott square and is named after the aforementioned Nobel prize winner.

Your cruise then concludes in Bridgetown, Barbados which is the only coral island in the region and is famous for it’s white sandy beaches. It was the first Caribbean Island to have piped water!

So there are a few ideas for a repositioning cruise . We love starting a cruise and finishing somewhere else so we would definitely recommend!  So what are you waiting for find out all the prices here.

How to Find the Best Repositioning Cruise Deals: Under $50 / Day!

August 16, 2020 By John Widmer 53 Comments

Last Updated : February 2020

Using cheap repositioning cruise deals to travel around the world can provide for an incredibly affordable way to get from one continent to another in complete luxury. We know this because we’ve now taken over a dozen repositioning cruises all across the world’s oceans and have been carefully tracking repositioning cruise prices during the past decade. As a result, we’ve scored many repositioning cruise deals that have taken us on over a half year’s worth of these unique sailings between North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and even Africa!

Repositioning cruises can be a wonderful travel experience to slowly voyage from one continent to another, stopping at far-flung ports along the way, all with the easy & carefree living that cruise travel delivers. Cheap repositioning cruise deals can offer considerable savings compared to daily rates of regular closed-circuit cruises. The bargains can be so good that repositioning cruises often prove to be even less expensive than a coach flight between the same locations. Yet scoring a repositioning cruise deal provides so much more of a travel experience compared to a cramped seat on a redeye flight.

We firmly believe that repositioning cruise deals are the best travel value in the world . The decadent four-course dinners, Broadway-style entertainment, island hopping from port-to-port, and retreating at night to a comfy stateroom can all make for an extravagant travel experience that many would only assume is entirely unaffordable way to travel the world. Yet if you know where to find the best repositioning cruise deals, such extravagance can be easily achievable for less than $50 per day !

Our love of these seasonal one-way cruise deals is so strong that we even utilized a series of repositioning cruises to travel entirely around the world without taking a single flight.

First, let’s dive into exactly how these one-way repositioning cruise deals work and the costs involved.

What Is a Repositioning Cruise?

A repositioning cruise is a one-way cruise voyage in which a ship is being relocated from one region in the world to another. Cruise lines regularly reposition their fleets annually based on seasonality, as weather conditions and travel patterns change across the globe.

Since these ships are being moved from one part of the world to another, repositioning cruises do tend to be lengthy voyages with a higher amount of sea days. As a result, these lengthy, off-season, one-way cruises can have low demand. So repositioning cruises are often priced dramatically lower to entice passengers to come aboard these unique, intercontinental itineraries.

Repositioning cruises are sometimes also referred to simply as repo cruises (for short) or relocation cruises (an alternate name). It’s all the same.

So that’s a brief primer on repositioning cruise. For more detail, open our separate article in the link below, and continue reading here for more info on how to score the best repositioning cruise deals.

Before revealing where to find the best repositioning cruise deals, it’s important to have an understanding about

  • when repositioning cruises are relocated, and
  • where repositioning cruises actually go.

When and Where Are the Best Repositioning Cruise Deals?

Repositioning cruises tend to be most active during the change in seasons:

As an example , let’s take a look at transatlantic repositioning cruises to illustrate these seasonal cruise relocations. The Mediterranean Sea boasts pleasantly warm weather and is high season for travel in the summer. So cruise lines often relocate ships to the Mediterranean in the late Spring in order to serve the many passengers who desire taking a summer Mediterranean cruise.

Meanwhile, summer months are the Caribbean’s hot and stormy summer offseason. So it’s only natural for cruise lines to move ships across the Atlantic Ocean by May, repositioning a portion of their fleet from ports serving the Caribbean to ports serving the Mediterranean and Europe.

The reverse occurs each Fall. That’s when many cruise ships are moved from Europe across the Atlantic to Florida, among other home ports serving the Caribbean, in time for the winter high-season months.

These transatlantic repositioning cruises form the most common repositioning cruise route. But there are many other repositioning cruise routes to consider.

Alaskan cruises can’t sail in the winter. So those ships need to go elsewhere, of course! Europe-Asia repositioning cruises can provide for port-intensive journeys between the adjoining continents. Transiting from North to South America (or vice versa) can be an interesting voyage that often includes a Panama Canal Cruise . There are many seasonal shifts in cruising that bring about repositioning cruises.

Where Repositioning Cruises Go in the Spring

The most common trend for Spring repositioning cruises is for ships to be relocated towards

  • European ports and
  • the Pacific Northwest (specifically, Vancouver & Seattle) for Alaska’s summer cruise season.

Below are typical repositioning cruise routes during the spring months.

Spring Repositioning Cruise Route Map

  • Northern Transatlantic : Florida (and US East Coast) ➡️ Europe
  • Southern Transatlantic : Argentina & Brazil ➡️ Europe
  • Panama Canal : Florida (and US East Coast) ➡️ US Pacific Coast
  • TransAmerica Panama Canal : Chile ➡️ Florida
  • Southern Transpacific : Sydney & Auckland ➡️ Hawaii, California, & Pacific Northwest
  • TransAmerica Pacific : Chile ➡️ California & Pacific Northwest
  • TransAsia : Asia (usually Singapore) ➡️ Europe
  • MiddleEastern : UAE ➡️ Europe
  • TransAfrica : South Africa ➡️ Europe

Where Repositioning Cruises Go in the Fall

During Autumn , cruises are repositioned away from Europe and Alaska. Most commonly ships are move to Florida and US East Coast ports to do Caribbean cruises during winter months. But cruises are also repositioned to Asia and locations throughout the southern hemisphere.

This is where cruise lines tend to reposition their cruise ships in the Fall:

Fall Repositioning Cruise Route Map

  • Northern Transatlantic : Europe ➡️ Florida (and US East Coast)
  • Southern Transatlantic : Europe ➡️ Argentina & Brazil
  • Panama Canal : US Pacific Coast ➡️ Florida (and US East Coast)
  • TransAmerica Panama Canal : Florida ➡️ Chile
  • Southern Transpacific : Hawaii, California, & Pacific Northwest ➡️ Sydney & Auckland
  • TransAmerica Pacific : California & Pacific Northwest ➡️ Chile
  • TransAsia : Europe ➡️ Asia (usually Singapore)
  • MiddleEastern : Europe ➡️ UAE
  • TransAfrica : Europe ➡️ South Africa
  • Canadian Maritimes : US East Coast ➡️Quebec, Canada

Note: The above route maps provide a general idea of the timing of repositioning cruises. Exact routes are constantly changing each year. Later is this article, some of the best repositioning cruise routes for 2022 are detailed.

What’s It Cost: How Cheap Are Repositioning Cruise Deals Really?

Repositioning cruise deals can vary greatly in cost, based on purchasing trends, timing of the purchase, the popularity of the ship, and the appeal of the exact itinerary.

That said, a decent deal for a two-week oceanic crossing can range from around $400-$800 per person. That breaks down to about $30-$60 per person, per night! Personally, we try to shoot for repositioning cruise prices under $50 per person, per night. Sometimes we’ll go above that threshold that for a great itinerary or if extra perks are included.

During each Spring and Fall season, we regularly see cheap repositioning cruise deals for about $500 per person , or even less, on common routes lasting about two weeks.

But repositioning cruises are regularly priced higher than those aforementioned deals. Factors such as great itineraries and sought-after ships will certainly help to drive up the prices for repositioning cruises. Purchasing trends also affect pricing. It’s not uncommon to see repositioning cruises listed for over $1,000 and much higher.

Yet supply and demand for each particular voyage can help drop repositioning cruise prices very low. So how low can they go?

The cheapest repositioning cruise we’ve ever spotted was for a two-week transatlantic cruise deal for a total of $159! This unfathomable $12/night price-point even included the rare feat of an open bar beverage package throughout the entire sailing. It seemed too-good-to-be-true. So back in 2016, we booked this insanely low-priced cruise simply to investigate if this deal was legit. If you’re curious to know what a $159 two-week cruise is like, then read our separate post reviewing it.

So What’s the Catch of a Cheap Repositioning Cruise Deal?

These cheap repositioning cruise deals may seem like they’re too good to be true. But they’re totally legit. There are no major catches, really.

It’s a common misnomer that repositioning cruise deals are so cheap because they’re boring and stripped-down cruises. That is simply not true!

It’s actually quite the opposite. Cruise lines tend to ramp up activities, lectures, and entertainment during all those extra days at sea. It can be a lot of fun. We always keep busy and never get bored.

The nightly four-course dinners include the same filet mignons and lobster tails passengers indulge in on regular weeklong cruise itineraries. The first-class staterooms are, of course, the same rooms. They don’t suddenly strip out all the luxuries of the staterooms since you bought a cheap repositioning cruises. The high level of service remains the same too.

Meanwhile, the many exotic ports that are visited along the routes are arguably the greatest appeal of repositioning cruises. Reaching some of these distant locations would cost a fortune to fly to. Thousands of dollars! Yet a repositioning cruise deal can provide a seamless and inexpensive way to reach many far-flung destinations, all while voyaging across the ocean in luxury.

Despite our love and praise of cheap repositioning cruise deals, they certainly aren’t for everyone.  We strongly advise anyone to fully understand some potential downsides before booking your first repositioning cruise across the ocean:

  • Travel dates are very specific , not at all flexible, and these deals are only at certain times each year.
  • These are lengthy journeys . So while they can be affordable, you’ll need the luxury of time to really take advantage of the deals (best for retirees, digital nomads, and long-term travelers). A two-week vacation would make for a very tight trip.
  • For passengers who are not continuing onward travel when the repositioning cruise ends, you must account for the cost of returning home . One-way intercontinental flights can add a major expense to the overall trip.
  • Some of the best repositioning cruise deals are last-minute . This can make advanced planning complicated and any last-minute flights involved can become even more expensive.
  • The best deals are usually for interior staterooms (meaning, no balcony or window). But inexpensive veranda rooms are possible. In fact, free balcony upgrades can be even easier to achieve on repositioning cruises.
  • There tend to be many sea days , which are fun-filled & relaxing (we never get bored). But this may not be for everyone.
  • Any expenses onshore while in port are at your own cost, of course. So that’s another cost to budget for. But exploring ashore can be a minimal expense for those comfortable with independent travel.
  • Wifi is often expensive and can be slow. This is a major problem for anyone who needs to stay connected for working online. Here are some cruise wifi hacks to help deal with that.
  • Repositioning cruise prices are usually based on double occupancy . So you’ll need a partner or travel buddy to score a cheap deal. Otherwise, solo cruisers are often forced to pay a harsh single supplement fee, usually ranging 50-100%.
  • Alcoholic drinks and even soda onboard are typically not included. So drinks can get pricey. To ease bar tabs, here are 20 proven strategies to get cheap drinks on a cruise .
  • Service gratuities will typically add $12-$16 per person, per night, to your daily cost. So this should be budgeted accordingly into total costs.
  • Lastly, you must know how to find these repositioning cruise deals . They’re not heavily promoted. Also, the best repositioning cruise deals tend to only be around for short periods of times. But we’re here to show you where the deals are and when to book them!

The Norwegian Star's upper deck during a transatlantic repositioning cruise

Know the Best Time to Book Cheap Repositioning Cruises

Trying to book the cheapest price on any cruise can be tricky and is always a bit of a gamble. It can be difficult to predict price fluctuations. Yet over the past decade, we’ve carefully tracked repositioning cruise price trends to discover common patterns on when to book.

So here’s what we’ve noticed over the years to now help you score the lowest price on repositioning cruises.

Lowest Repositioning Cruise Rates Often Emerge 2-3 Months Prior to Departure

A pricing trend that has remained consistent over the years is being able to find some of the best repositioning cruise deals by booking fairly last-minute . We’ve noticed low prices appearing two-three months before the repositioning cruise is scheduled to embark.

This comes contrary to common advice for booking cruises. Often with cruises, it’s recommended to book as early as possible to score the best deal. And there are indeed some great repositioning cruise deals that can be scored far in advance. But for particularly common routes, like transatlantic repositioning cruises, rates are sometimes slashed in the few months leading up to embarkation.

This last-minute repositioning cruise booking strategy has been a tried-and-true method we’ve used to uncover some of the best repositioning cruise deals out there. Prices tend to drop when each cruise’s cancelation period ends, which is about 45-90 days out, depending on the cruise line.

Understand the economics at play. Those who book a cruise in advance have an option to cancel and receive a full or partial refund up until about 2-3 months before the cruise departs. This is known as the cancelation period and it varies by cruise line, ship, and itinerary. Once the cancelation period ends, anyone who booked the cruise are locked into it. Therefor, the cruise lines don’t really know their true occupancy count until that time frame.

At this point, the cruise lines will often discount remaining cabins greatly in attempts to fill the ship to capacity. So during the two-three month period prior to the desired sail date, you can regularly find very attractive prices. That is, if you have the nerves to hold out on booking such an extensive cruise only a month or two before you set sail. After all, waiting to potentially get a deal also comes with a realistic risk of prices rising or the cruise selling out.

A general rule of thumb is the following:

  • Spring repositioning cruises : Around February can be an attractive time to buy for March-April sailings.
  • Fall repositioning cruises : Buy around late August or early September for October-November sailings.

We’ve found that for an April embarkation, around February can be the best time of year to make a move. During this timeframe, you actually get a double whammy of good fortune. For one, this time of year is what the cruise industry calls “ Wave Season ,” a promotional period when cruise lines are offering deep discounts and generous perks such as onboard credit, drink packages, prepaid gratuities, wifi packages, and more.

For the Fall repositioning cruises, the best time to buy can be around August and into September. Of course, this all depends on the cruise’s exact departure date, cancelation policy, and recent booking trends.

It Can Also Make Sense to Book Repositioning Cruises in Advance

If you see a repositioning cruise that you really like at a price you’re willing to pay, sometimes it can be a wise move to just book it.

The most obvious rationale for booking a repositioning cruise early is to have the luxury of making international travel plans in advance. And it’s definitely possible to find great repositioning cruise deals without having to wait until that semi-last-minute period.

While typically waiting until a few months before the cruise’s departure to buy can be a good bet, above all else, just buy if you see a great deal regardless of the time of year .

There have been instances when we’ve expected a repositioning cruise price to drop based upon past trends, but then prices rose instead. It’s always a gamble as to whether any cruise’s price may rise or fall. If it’s a really nice ship or a very attractive itinerary, the repositioning cruise price can be at even greater risk of rising. And these repositioning cruises actually do sell out.

So if you find a great price on a repositioning cruise you really want to take, it can be smart not to get greedy and wait for price to go lower. Just book it! Waiting for a lower price can often prove to be a wise strategy, but it sometimes leads to disappointment.

Additionally, most cruise lines are currently offering flexible cancelations policies, often with refundable cancelations up to 48-hours before sailing. Therefore, it could definitely make more sense to book whenever you see a great deal, given the possibility to cancel without penalty.

The Best Advice for Timing Your Repositioning Cruise Purchase

Really, our best advice on timing your repo cruise booking is this :

If you don’t care much about what cruise line, ship, or itinerary, then it will prove best to wait it out to the 45-90 cancelation period before booking. You will most certainly get an excellent bargain on a sailing, for under $50 per night.

But if there is a particular ship or itinerary that you definitely want to cruise on, then be careful gambling by waiting for rates to potentially drop. Prices could rise unexpectedly, leaving you heartbroken and missing the deal for a specific cruise you’re eyeing.

Best Repositioning Cruise Deals for 2022

🦠 note about 2020 repositioning cruises during the pandemic.

Each repositioning cruise season, we update this article to highlight the best and cheapest last-minute repositioning cruise deals. But for 2020 the coronavirus pandemic has canceled many cruising voyages around the world. This includes repositioning cruise cancelations, of course. Unfortunately, many Fall 2020 repositioning cruises have been canceled.

Yet there are still some Fall 2020 repositioning cruises that you can book right now! Of course, you must be able to comply with any government restrictions and weigh the personal risks on your own.

Also, be familiar with the refund policies in the realistic instance that these last-minute repositioning cruises don’t sail. So it could prove financially beneficial to book and get canceled upon, if you’re able to use the future cruise credit for a repositioning cruise in 2021. Just know the policy before you book.

The itineraries range from fairly barebones direct sailings across the ocean to port-intensive voyages with only a few sea days in between to break up the trip. Some transatlantic itineraries include Caribbean islands on the eastern side, an abundance of European ports on the Western Atlantic, and far-flung islands in between. Stops into Atlantic Ocean islands such as the Azores, Canaries, Madeira, and Bermuda help to break apart the lengthy ocean crossing.

Last-Minute Transatlantic Repositioning Cruise Deals for Fall 2020

Most Fall 2020 transatlantic repositioning cruises have been outright canceled. Only Norwegian cruise line has one late-season transatlantic itinerary that prospective passengers can still book.

🔖🚢 The Norwegian Getaway late-season Dec 5th sailing could potentially happen. This beautiful  5-star ship is scheduled to cross the Atlantic with rates down to $82/night . We love the packed itinerary from Barcelona to New York! After leaving Barcelona, it stops daily in three great Spanish ports before continuing on to intriguing Madeira and and the far-flung Azores. The voyage culminates by porting in Bermuda for the day, then making the final push to NYC. It’s a great ship and great itinerary. If it does sail, we foresee possible itinerary changes and a potential for prices to drop.  See complete itinerary and up-to-date rates .

2021 Spring Transatlantic Repositioning Cruise Deals: US to Europe

There are already some unusually low rates for 2021 transatlantic repositioning cruises, well in advance of the deals that tend to emerge in the last-minute. In fact, we’ve already spotted a dozen 2021 transatlantic repositioning cruises within the $50 per night range! There’s even this 16-night Royal Caribbean cruise that’s down to a mere $35/night !

The table below highlights the cheapest transatlantic repositioning cruise rates we’re seeing for 2021. If you like any of these 2021 repositioning cruise deals, it’ll likely prove to be a good bet to lock in these low prices now!

2021 Fall Transatlantic Repositioning Cruise Deals: Europe to US

Cheapest southern transatlantic repositioning cruise deals: europe ↔️ latin america.

South Transatlantic Repositioning Cruise map

Transatlantic repositioning cruises don’t just voyage from the US to Europe. European cruise lines, in particular, like to relocate their fleets over to South America and Caribbean countries during the winter months, then back to Europe for the summer cruise season. While flights between South America and Europe can be very expensive, a transatlantic cruise to South America can make for an interesting option to consider instead.

For Fall 2020, most of these southern Atlantic repositioning cruises are still planning to make the crossing. And we’re seeing some great rates!

Spring 2021 South Transatlantic Repositioning Cruise Deals: Latin America to Europe

Cheapest transpacific repositioning cruise deals: south pacific.

Southern Transpacific Repositioning Cruise map

Transpacific repositioning cruise deals that go through the South Pacific tend not to come as cheap as the other repositioning cruise routes. Each season we see a handful of these lengthy cruises with daily rates under $100 per day.

Stopping at many exotic South Pacific islands along the route can make for a particularly appealing way to voyage between Australia and North America over the course of a month. So these ships do tend to fill up.

For those who have the cash, a South Pacific repositioning cruise can be well worth the splurge. When considering how much flights and hotels would add up for a similar itinerary across destinations like Hawaii, Fiji, and New Zealand, then you realize that $2,000 to spend a month voyaging around these islands is actually a heck of a deal!

Sometimes the transpacific crossing is split up between two separate back-to-back voyages. These two cruise segments tend to use Honolulu, Hawaii, as a transition hub. So in the Fall ships will often voyage between North America and Honolulu, then a separate cruise segment from Honolulu to Australia. The reverse occurs in Spring.

Unfortunately, the temporary suspension of cruises has claimed all of 2020’s south Pacific repositioning cruises. But intriguing options remain for 2021!

2021 South Transpacific Repositioning Cruise Deals

There are fewer South Pacific repositioning cruises in 2021, compared to recent past years. Yet we’re still seeing a handful of southern transpacific repositioning cruises for under $100/night.

Here are the least expensive south pacific repositioning cruises we’ve spotted for 2021. Reserve these refundable deals now while the prices are low!

Cheapest TransPacific Repositioning Cruise Deals: North America ↔️ Asia

Pacific Repositioning cruise route map

Fall transpacific repositioning cruises tend to depart North America in September bound for Asia for its winter cruising season. The most common route is Vancouver to Tokyo, as there are typically 3-5 ships making that crossing each season.

It’s a great voyage we’ve personally enjoyed a few times now. These northern transpacific repositioning cruise itineraries usually incorporate stops throughout Alaska and Japan, plus sometimes Russia!

Often scenic cruising is included, such as Alaska’s Inside Passage and even Glacier Bay National Park . Meanwhile the open Northern Pacific Ocean is teaming with whales that are viewable from the ship. We’ve never seen so many whales during a cruise!

Unfortunately no transpacific cruises are making this voyage with passengers in 2020, given the ongoing pandemic. But there are some deals sprouting up for this northern transpacific route in 2021!

2021 Northern Transpacific Repositioning Cruise Deals

During Spring 2021, there are five ships among the main cruise lines that are making the northern transpacific voyage from Tokyo to either Vancouver or Seattle. There are some fairly attractive rates for three of those sailings, detailed in the table below.

(The other two ( Celebrity Millennium and RC Ovation ) are priced high at the time of last updating this article. We suspect prices may drop. We’ll add them to this list if prices do come down.)

Meanwhile, Fall 2021 transpacific repositioning cruises from the Pacific Northwest to Asia bring about some attractive options. The lengthy a port-packed Royal Princess itinerary looks particularly awesome. It’s basically a full Alaska cruise and a full Japan cruise, rolled into one at a very discounted price.

Between the Americas: Panama Canal Repositioning Cruises

TransAmericas Panama Canal Repositioning Cruise map

The changing of seasons between hemispheres brings on a flurry of repositioning activity throughout the Americas. Ships that cruise South America during the northern hemisphere’s winter need to get repositioned back up to the north. So, often the Panama Canal is involved! Additionally, some cruise lines reposition their cruises from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast towards or away from Alaska, via the Panama Canal.

While there are regular Panama Canal cruises throughout much of the year, often they are priced much higher. Many of those pricey Panama Canal cruises don’t even go entirely through the Panama Canal. Instead, they get away with a “partial transit” by going through one lock, then simply turning back around the way it came.

So Panama Canal repositioning cruises provide an opportunity to score a deal on a Panama Canal itinerary while making the full transit. It’s a great experience going through all three locks between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. You can read more about our: Panama Canal transit on the Celebrity Infinity .

We’re currently seeing some decent prices on these cruises between the Americas. But one thing to understand is high port taxes imposed during any cruise that goes through the Panama Canal. So while it’s a common practice for cruise pricing to be pre-taxed, Panama Canal itineraries are even more important to inspect the post-tax pricing before buying.

The Celebrity Infinity going through the Gatun locks of Panama Canal

With a handful of Panama Canal repositioning cruises planned for November and December 2020, these cruises are still planning to sail (as of last update, Aug 2020). The table below highlights the best last-minute deals currently available for 2020. These Panama Canal repo cruise deals for are decent. But they’re not quite as great as we’ve seen in past years.

Still, there are some great ships with great itineraries at some nice rates. Perhaps most attractive, these provide a rare chance in 2020 for Americans to consider a lengthy repositioning voyage without straying far from the US.

2021 Panama Canal Repositioning Cruise Deals

There are already a few great deals available for 2021 Panama Canal repositioning cruises cruises that are priced around that coveted $50/night range. Buy these repositioning cruise deals now before prices rise! We’ll add to this list if/when prices for other cruises drop.

Middle East Repositioning Cruise Deals Between Asia & Europe

Repositioning cruise routes exist to connect Asia with Europe, utilizing the Suez Canal. These more exotic repositioning cruise routes tend to be even less common, and can be priced higher. Yet repositioning cruise deals between Asia and Europe still do abound!

Interesting ports of call on these routes can include stops into Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Oman, and various Indian Ocean islands such as the Maldives. Additionally, all of these cruises use the Suez Canal to voyage in between the continents of Asia and Africa. The transit through the famed canal is a full day event of scenic cruising across Egypt.

The most common repositioning cruise route through the Suez Canal is between UAE (Dubai or Abu Dhabi) and various Mediterranean European ports (e.g., Rome, Athens, Barcelona, Venice). Some of these repositioning cruises through the Middle East use Dubai as a transition hub to form two separate cruises that carry-on further to/from Europe, by booking back-to-back cruises.

Personally, we’ve managed to score repositioning cruises through the Middle East, going through the Suez Canal. They were both excellent voyages filled with exotic ports that would otherwise prove very difficult and costly to travel to.

We once even took a six-week repositioning cruise journey from Hong Hong to Italy, which ended up totaling a mere $49 per night, all-inclusive with an outside cabin! It was an incredible lengthy cruise journey of champagne living on a Budweiser budget. We were able to check out so many interesting places along this amazing itinerary, cruising nearly halfway around the world.

Asia-Europe repositioning cruise map

As you may imagine, 2020 sailings have been greatly impacted. Most all of the 2020 repositioning cruises from Europe to the Middle East and Asia have been canceled. But there is one remaining voyage still planning to sail in Fall 2020. The MSC Fantasia is scheduled for a 3-week cruise from Barcelona to your choice of disembarking in either Doha (Qatar) or Dubai (UAE). Either way, this last minute cruise is currently set at a bargain price, starting at $45/night !

Repositioning cruise through Suez Canal

2021 Repositioning Cruises between Asia and Europe

In 2021, we’re seeing fewer repositioning cruise itineraries between Asia and Europe compared to past years. Yet there are still some intriguing deals to consider.

Repositioning Cruises Between Europe and South Africa

Repositioning cruises to/from South Africa are a new-ish route we most recently took. It’s a great itinerary that spans the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Indian Ocean Islands.

For 2020, the MSC Opera still intends to take this journey, departing Venice on November 8th 2020, for a nearly month-long voyage to South Africa. And at only $58/night , it’s definitely an attractive repositioning cruise deal to consider! See full itinerary and today’s prices .

We recently embarked on a similar Europe-to-Africa repositioning cruise itinerary with MSC and loved it! (Play highlight video below).

Repositioning Cruise Deals Between Australia and Asia

As cruise fleets also move between Australia and Asia during the shifting seasons. Aussies can avoid the flight to holiday in Asia by hopping on on a discounted repositioning cruise instead. It’s also an interesting way to consider traveling from Asia to Australia.

Here are some of the best 2021 repositioning cruise deals we’re seeing between Australia and Asia.

Booking a Repositioning Cruise Deal

The above listed deals are the cheapest repositioning cruises out there, at the time of last update (August 2020). We’ve meticulously combed through all repositioning cruises for each route to identify the best deals.

If you want to see what additional repositioning cruises are out there currently listed at higher prices, you may want to do some additional sleuthing on your own.

You can search and sort through all of the repositioning cruises listed on CruiseDirect . You’ll likely stumble across some great deals that include some additional routes, such as shorter repositioning cruises between European countries. But just realize that their list can also be incomplete, as some repositioning cruises aren’t labeled as such within their search system. It’s also not organized, which is why we’ve taken the time to show the best deals for each repositioning cruise route, above.

On the Costa Victoria looking over balcony, perhaps searching for next repositioning cruise deal

Outlook on Booking a 2021 Repositioning Cruise Deal

With cruise lines greatly relaxing their cancelation policies. It can make sense to book a good deal if you see one. Particularly if you really like a certain repositioning cruise deal you see now, it’s probably best to strike while you can. Otherwise you may become disappointed if prices go up or if the cruise sells out.

Repositioning cruise pricing trends can be somewhat predictable for those in the know. Yet with all the uncertainty going on in 2020 and into 2021, all bets are off. There will be many changes implemented as repositioning cruises start back up again. Some of those occurrences could affect how good of a deal may be available on a repositioning cruise.

For example, many cruise lines are currently not filling their ships to capacity, so guests can more easily keep distanced. Also, we’ve noticed some repositioning cruises have been cut from the 2021 calendar. Certain ships have gotten sold or scrapped, while other itineraries have been altered to accommodate shorter and closer cruises that people may be more attracted to in 2021. All of these actions will lead to reduced inventory of cabins on repositioning cruises in 2021. This could potentially lead to cruises selling out and/or higher prices.

There is pent-up demand for cruising and many cruisers are in need of using their future cruise credits (fcc) they have accumulated from canceled 2020 cruises. This could further make getting a cabin on a repositioning cruise potentially more competitive.

On the other hand, many potential cruise customers may want to cruise closer to home. A far-flung repositioning cruise route may not be attractive, particularly among the retired crowd who has the time off to take such lengthy voyages. So it is possible that prices drop, as they have during past years. It’s all purely speculative at this point.

Yet with most cruise line cancelation policies now allowing cancelations 48 hours or more before the sailing, it can be a very safe bet to just book while there’s a good deal.

As I am based in Sydney, Australia I think location wise is a disadvantage for repositioning cruises. Would you have any recommendations based on your experience? ie from or to Australia. Thanking you in advance!

repositioning cruise to asia

December 21, 2019 at 1:23 PM

There are a few repositioning cruises each year to/from Australia. But like all repositioning cruises, timing is everything. April is the key month (occasionally end of March or early May). In April each year, there are a few ships Sydney for repositioning routes heading over to California, Hawaii, Seattle, Vancouver, and Asia (usually Singapore, Shanghai, or Hong Kong). For April 2020, we’re already seeing at least a half dozen ship departing Aus around April with prices under $100/day. The monthlong voyage across the Pacific is a particularly attractive option stopping at far-flung south Pacific Islands and we’re seeing rates as low as $55/day.

I just discovered your site.It is fantastic. We (78/79)are planning an April 2020 cruise from Ft. Lauderdale or Miami and are open to any European destination. Any tips or recommendations for ships, timing or return flights possibilities . We most likely are going to do a stay at a hotel that does the hotel to ship transport.Any suggestions there? I was surprised that there was no mention of Cruise Compete. Don’t like it? Thanks for being here

October 12, 2019 at 2:22 AM

There are many repositioning cruises heading out from Florida to Europe in April, so that’s great timing. 🙂 Some of the MSC and NCL ships are already showing some very attractive pricing on these voyages, with rates under $50/night. We’ll be updating this post soon to list some of the deals we’re seeing for Spring 2020 repositioning cruises. The opportunities are endless on return flight possibilities. Really, it’ll depend on where exactly you’re cruising to. Most of the ships head to London (Southampton), Barcelona, Italy, and Copenhagen. Of those, there is a very inexpensive, direct Norwegian Air flight that goes from London to Miami, usually priced under $200. So that’s something to consider. Regarding CruiseCompete, we’ve used it many times in an attempt to see if it can beat pricing we’ve already found. Yet each time, it’s never yielded any deals that have beat the price/promos we’ve seen elsewhere. Others have told us it’s worked well for them, but we have not seen that firsthand. It certainly doesn’t hurt to check them before buying, which we still do.

Do you have experience or information on repositioning cruises within Europe in October? I’m interested in taking advantage of such a thing while already in Europe if i can find brief cruises there. Thank you! Wonderful website.

October 12, 2019 at 2:46 AM

Yes, there are usually a few. For example, next October the MSC Magnifica will be going from London to Genoa Italy on a 10-day itinerary. There are many more of these one-way European routes out there. You can find ones that meet your preferences by filtered search criteria to hone in on routes that may be attractive to you. Why cant I find any repos from the East Coast to Europe in Aug 2019?

July 1, 2019 at 10:02 AM

That’s because ships are not being repositioned on that route during that time. There aren’t any eastbound transatlantic repositioning cruises in August. Spring is (March-May) is the season for repositioning cruises from East Coast US to Europe. In August, cruises are just beginning to get repositioned in the opposite direction, from Europe to US East Coast. It’s even more prevalent Oct-Nov. For a better understanding of the seasonality of repositioning cruises, be sure you check out the section of this article subtitled “Understand the Common Repositioning Cruise Routes & Timing” which further explains when these repositioning cruises are moving across the oceans.

This is really a great post, guys.. super detailed and very helpful. I’m sure it took a lot of time and effort to create it – thanks for giving such a thorough treatment to this topic. I had heard about repositioning cruises but until reading your post had no idea how to get started. Now, as South America gets too rainy, we’ve booked passage to Europe and got a great deal. Thanks again

April 18, 2019 at 4:49 PM

That’s so great to hear – thanks so much for stopping by. We always hope this helps to find these details to move across the oceans in what is a rather unconventional way. Hope you have an awesome cruise over to Europe – cheers!

how do i find the re-positioning cruises in December?

April 15, 2019 at 9:23 AM

Because most repositioning cruises tend to depart in Spring and Fall, December repo cruises are rare. But they do exist. You can find them by using the steps outlined in this post. I just did a real quick search and found for this December (2019) a few well-priced Costa ships going from Europe to the Caribbean, and also a Princess ship from Florida to South America.

I love all your hints and helps for finding cheap repositioning cruises. THey are great, buthow can I continue to save money with cheap airfare home? Do you have any great sites, or tips, for getting the best rates on airfare? I would love to see an article about how to save even on my air fare costs. LOVE your blog and and thanks!

March 3, 2019 at 1:04 PM

Yes, that’s one downside to repositioning cruises is the sometimes hefty cost of airfare to get back. Personally, we use them as one-way transits where our travels are continuing, so we don’t have to bear the cost of traveling back. That said, there are now many budget airlines that cross the Atlantic and competition is heating up which helps to drive those prices even lower. We’ve regularly found fares under $500 and even under $200 to go one-way across the Atlantic. To better chances at scoring a low airfare deal like that, it’s best to be flexible with airports and consider using flights/trains/bus on either end to get to an airport to take advantage of such ultra-low fares. We’d suggest using open-end searches on Google Flights to scout out some of those airfare deals. Play around with it to for searches like “London to United States” which will show you all the cheapest routes from London to US, for example. Wow Airlines, Norwegian, and Tap are budget airlines that are well-known for these cheap inter-continental flights. Hope that may help – good luck and happy travels! 🙂

This is exactly the type of information I have been seeking. We are flying to Europe this fall, but will be cruising back. My plan was to wait until we actually arrived in Europe, and then book a cruise back. I was intending to book directly with the cruise line, but now I have the wisdom to shop around.

I so appreciate the advice, and cannot wait to find our return trip using your tricks of the trade.

January 30, 2019 at 7:33 PM

Oh so glad it helped! And if you’re trying to score a cheap last-minute Fall deal, you’ll likely start seeing some bargains pop up for Fall transatlantics starting around the late-summer, based on trends we’ve seen during the past five years or so. Will try to update this page then too. Yes, shopping around can pay off and sometimes the agencies can toss some nice promos in to entice booking! 🙂 Happy cruising!

January 23, 2020 at 4:59 PM

Hello. Loving your site. A couple of questions: 1. Prices quoted are usd? 2. Per night excludes taxes and gratuities? 3. Perhaps one to add to the list. Norwegian Jewel Sydney to Papeete cruise then staying on for their Papeete to Honolulu cruise has some interesting ports. This departs Sydney 28 February, then 20 March from Papeete. The reverse departs Honolulu October 23 2020, then November 6 from Papeete.

January 25, 2020 at 5:27 PM

Hi Julie! 1) Yes, all in USD. 2) Yes, per night rates listed throughout the post are before taxes and gratuities. 3) Thanks for the suggestion – looks like a great cruise to add to the list! We’re constantly updating this post, so will definitely put the Jewell on our next update soon. Nice price and looks like an amazing itinerary!

January 25, 2020 at 11:53 PM

Thanks for your reply. I don’t think those Jewel cruises are offered as one cruise so would need to be booked separately as B2B.

Maybe you know that Jetstar, one of the Australian budget airlines (wholly owned by Qantas), has cheap fares to/from Honolulu. So this cruise could be a good option without the usual expensive flights to/from Australia. It’s a shorthaul airline flying within Australia and around the South Pacific and Asia. They often have a birthday sale in May with take a friend for free flights. Sign up to their email slerts for specials. As with most budget airlines, the base fare only includes carry-on luggage, everything else is extra… Hope this helps. Julie. PS love your Galapagos on a Budget.

Hi. Thanks for the great information re cruising. I notice you have information re repositioning cruises for the Fall of 2018, but nothing for the Spring of 2019. Yes, we are planning to update this post very soon. November 21, 2018 at 6:04 AM

Very Cool. I really enjoyed your article and it totally got me thinking. I’d love to pick your brain a bit if I may.

If I understood correctly, you took the Westward route. Was that just to fit your schedule or is it your general experience that the best deals fit into the method? In my (very initial) research it seems like a repositioning cruise that link Asia and Europe goes in the direction of Asia to Europe but not as often the other way around. Is there truth to this, or did I just miss it?

Speaking of, I was looking at options to make that Europe / Asia link without a cruise or a flight. The option look a little slim. The Trans Siberian Railway looks good, but there seems little other overland choice. I was curious if you researched option other than a reposition cruise in the event you couldn’t find a different deal.

Thank you so much again for the time and effort you put into this article!

December 1, 2018 at 6:49 PM

Yes, when we did our round-the-world trip using cruises we chose a westward route. The reason for this was primarily because it fit our schedule. We were planning to leave North America in the fall, so westbound the Vancouver to Asia routes were really our only affordable option at that time. Another consideration with going west was the bonus of regularly gaining an hour in the day, rather than losing an hour every time crossing time zones.

The repositioning cruises linking Asia to Europe are just rare in general. I haven’t noticed that they are more common going towards Europe, but that may indeed be the case. Would need to look more into that. There just tends to be few heading either way.

As for other options making Europe-Asia link overland, we did look into that a bit. At one point, we weren’t entirely certain that we’d use a cruise to go from Asia to Europe. We looked doing the Trans Siberian railway, but we found the Russia visa process to be prohibitive for us due to the requirement of obtaining the visa while in the US (we were already abroad) and other logistical issues. We also looked into passing through the Stans, which also looks possible but likewise logistically challenging. In this travel update, we weighed out some different options in the latter half of the post: https://www.roamingaroundtheworld.com/travel-update-were-circumnavigating-the-globe-without-flights/

Happy travels!

Heather – I’m loving your blog. BTW – Go ‘Scorps! 😉

We are eyeing a TA from Port Canaveral to Barcelona on Epic. $699 pp for an interior. at the moment. Add in drink packages and gratuities, it’s $2,900 for 2 adults. Sailing is in April. Would you book now…or wait?

repositioning cruise to asia

October 9, 2018 at 8:17 PM

Hi Reagan! It’s a tough call knowing exactly when to pull the trigger booking a repositioning cruise. $699 is a good price considering that it includes the drink package and gratuities. I’m guessing that price would likely drop lower if you wait more last minute (like 90 days or less before sailing). However, if the price does drop (we’ve seen prices as low as $299 for an Epic TA), it likely won’t include the perks like the drink package and paid gratuities. This is just a presumption based on what we’ve seen while eyeing repositioning cruises. So, the question to book now or wait? I’d say if you really want the Epic sailing out of Port Canaveral, book it. But, if you’re flexible on your departure port, it might benefit you to see if the prices drop on other sailings out of Port Canaveral, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Tampa all sailing in April. Please let us know what you end up doing! Bon Voyage! Sting em’ Scorps 🙂

October 15, 2018 at 8:54 PM

Heather – Thanks for the advice! Here’s the deal I found, and we are going with it. NCL Epic 15 night Port Canaveral to Barcelona. Currently the price for an interior cabin is $699pp, but to get the free drink package, we have to book one category up, which is $799pp. I searched on Facebook and found a group that was created solely for this sailing, so I joined to see what it was all about. I am REALLY glad I did. I found out that a large number of people that were part of this Facebook group worked out a group deal with NCL. The $799pp that you can purchase on your own is the same with drink package included, BUT if you book using their group code, it also includes all gratuities for the drink package + the standard daily gratuity waived. For 15 nights, this equals about $1,000 total for 2 people in gratuities that are waived, if booked using their group code. So long story short, the 15 night trip with drinks and all gratuities included will be about $1,800 for 2 people. Roughly $60pp/pd! We will be eligible for adjustments until final payment date which is December 28 in the event there is a drop. We need time to plan in advance, so waiting last minute isn’t ideal for us. But at this price, we are jumping on it! Next step will be to keep an eye out for flights home. Norwegian air has some great prices for one way flights from Paris to Orlando for $300pp including one checked bag each. So I think we will be taking a train to Paris after Barcelona and then leaving after. My next obstacle will be to find out how to make the Barcelona/Paris leg of the trip affordable. 🙂

Hi absolutely loved this!! Thank you so much for the time and effort to write this. We are based in the U.K. We find it difficult to get great prices because we are restricted to school holidays. However, we got a good deal for August leaving from Southampton to Spain on Royal Caribbean. Can’t wait!!

December 15, 2015 at 2:27 PM

Thank you so so much! I was trying to find an affordable cruise, but even the shortest, cheapest ones were double the price with taxes. I wanted to find a great deal, so I looked into repositioning cruises and found your blog! I searched for my cruise on vacationtogo.com with your advice, and I found an amazing deal at only 12 dollars a day. I just booked my cruise for 12 nights from Colombia to Portugal for only $145 per person on Pullmantur cruise lines. The total came to around $560 for 2 adults for 12 nights, and I just wanted to thank you for posting these great tips!

December 30, 2015 at 11:10 AM

Wow, wow, wow! $12 per day! That’s and incredible! And from Colombia to Portugal – what an interesting itinerary! So glad that this advice had helped. We hope you have smooth sailings! Bon voyage! 🙂

I’d love to hear of follow up on this cruise line. Can someone add their experience?

May 27, 2016 at 11:32 AM

What cruise line would you like to hear a follow-up on. We’re about to set sail on the Pullman Monarch for a 13-day repositioning cruise today and we’ll gladly be posting about our experience on that ship. Have never sailed with Pullmantur (or any non-American cruise brand) before, so this will be an entirely new experience for us! 🙂

Wow, what an absolutely fabulous post! You are so generous in providing such detail and links, so helpful. We have taken repositioning cruises in the past and still learned so much from you, now we will surely be saving even more money next year!

Thanks for the kind feedback! Hope you score an incredible deal next year – good luck!

July 30, 2015 at 9:23 PM

This is very detailed and super helpful – thanks! Now that I live in Florida one of these types of cruises seems ever more appealing. I’ll be coming back to this bookmarked article in February 2015!

July 31, 2015 at 12:46 AM

Oh, good – thanks! And many of these deals are really super convenient for people who live in Florida since there are so many of them leaving from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Canaveral, and Tampa during the Spring. All three of the repositioning cruises we took last year either arrived or departed from South Florida, which was awesome for us because that is right where we’re based. And there’s something also just kinda cool about traveling over sea directly from your home and then winding up on a hole ‘mother continent!

Thanks for the feedback Bethaney! And I agree – we really want to do more cruises too! We’re hoping to catch another repositioning cruise this fall from Europe to Florida. We’ll see though. Glad you found this guide helpful!

Wow, this is awesome advice, and a really cheap per night price. Yup, now a repositioning cruise is on my bucket list 🙂

August 28, 2014 at 2:43 AM

Thanks! Yes, you must give it a try one day! There’s actually a few bargains in October from Europe to the US for less than $50/day that we were mulling over as I saw your comment! It is such a great (and cheap!) way to travel between the two continents if the timing works out.

Repositioning

To see discounted cruises in this region, use the Find a Bargain box on the left.

11 Ways to Find a Cheap Cruise: The Secrets of Cruise Discounts in 2024

By Tamara Hinson

May 31, 2024

Bag a shoulder season deal

In travel, shoulder season is the period between peak season and low season, and you’ll find it in cruising, too. Cruise lines don’t only offer consistently lower prices during shoulder season sailings—they’ll typically offer regular flash sales during these times, too.

“Keep an eye out for flash sales during shoulder seasons,” says Elaine Warren, founder of specialist cruise travel agency FamilyCruiseCompanion.com . “Cruise lines are desperate to fill ships during these times. I've found some real steals by being ready to book as soon as I see a great offer pop up.”

Bear in mind that different regions have different shoulder seasons. In Alaska, for example, the main shoulder seasons are April and early May, and then at the end of summer between September and mid-October. Europe’s shoulder seasons are April and May, and then again in September to November. For Caribbean cruises, it’s May, June, and July and then in December, January, and March.

Try to book at least six months in advance

Passionate cruisers Don and Heidi Bucolo, founders of top cruise blog EatSleepCruise.com , say that advance booking can be a key to great deals.

“Our advice is to book cruises between 6 and 12 months in advance. Typically, cruise prices tend to go up closer to the sail date, especially for newer ships or for more desirable travel dates.”

Consider repositioning cruises

Repositioning cruises are one-way sailings during which ships relocate from one region to another, like when they switch between summer Europe sailings to a winter Caribbean schedule. Because these voyages typically cross entire oceans, they’re a great way to see multiple regions.

You’ll need to brush up on shoulder seasons to find the best deals. For example, autumn is when ships based in the Mediterranean are most likely to head to the Caribbean’s sunnier shores, while spring is when ships based in the Middle East often reposition to the Mediterranean. But when you find a good repositioning run the savings can be huge.

“Repositioning cruises can be 50% cheaper than regular sailings, offering great value and the chance to discover destinations many travelers overlook,” says Jeremy Clubb, founder of Antarctica Cruises .

Consider an itinerary with fewer port days

On the itinerary of the cruise you’re considering, pay extra attention to the number of in-port days and the number of sea days. Doing so can help make your money go further while also making sure you get the most out of your sailing.

“I always try to weigh up port days versus sea days based on the [client’s] interests and budget,” says travel advisor Elaine Warren, founder of FamilyCruiseCompanion.com . “Extra time on board means fewer shore excursions, and excursion costs can really add up over a week.”

Leverage your loyalty

If you’re considering booking with a cruise line you’ve sailed with before, ask for a loyalty discount. Remember that it always pays to ask. "Even if your preferred cruise line doesn’t explicitly promote loyalty discounts, there’s absolutely no harm in asking for one,” says Jeremy Clubb at Antarctica Cruises . “More often than not, you’ll be successful because cruise lines prefer to incentivize repeat business rather than spend more attracting new customers.”

Book your next cruise while you’re still aboard

When you’re still on a cruise, you’ll almost always be able to get a discount off future sailings on the same cruise line, and many ships have special booking desks set up expressly to handle new reservations. Some lines will also give you onboard credits to use for expenses on your next voyage. So if you’re planning another vacation with the same cruise line, don’t wait until you’re on dry land.

Ask about special discounts

You may not know that many cruise lines offer fixed discounts to shareholders, military personnel, senior citizens, and members of the armed forces. And the reason you may not know is they’re usually poorly advertised, and when they are, details are often vague at best.

For example, Royal Caribbean promotes discounts for anyone aged 55 and over ( RoyalCaribbean.com ) but only on selected cruises, while Cunard touts onboard credit offers to members of the armed forces ( Cunard.com/en-us/military ). Norwegian Cruise Line gets bonus points for clearly laying out its discounts for shareholders on a dedicated page ( NCLhltd.com ) although there’s no information relating to other discounts.

It’s important to bear in mind that cruise lines won’t necessarily shout about available discounts—if you don’t ask, you won’t get them.

Don’t hold out for last-minute bargains

These days, waiting for last-minute cruise discounts can end up costing you more.

“While cruise lines once used last-minute reductions to fill their ships, there’s not currently any need for them,” says Chris Owen, founder of ChrisCruises.com ). “This is because, currently, post-pandemic, there’s no need as there’s still this huge pent-up demand.”

Hold off booking that expedition cruise

If you dream of exploring Antarctica or gawping at the Galapagos’ sea lions but you’re put off by the high prices associated with this type of cruise, don’t despair. Cruise lines are constructing an ever-growing number of expedition-style ships serving these destinations, and as availability to these regions increases with time, prices are likely to fall.

“More cruise lines are starting to offer expedition voyages,” say Don and Heidi at EatSleepCruise.com . “In the coming years, there will be an increase in the number of cruises being offered to places once considered remote—destinations like Antarctica, the Arctic Circle and the Galapagos are all becoming more accessible.”

Consider older ships

Only looking at new ships could cost you dearly, and the rewards aren’t necessarily worth it.

“Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , the world's largest cruise ship, has cruise fares which are close to double what you might pay for similar sailings on other megaships from the brand's older Oasis-class ships, which were once record-breaking ships and still have loads of onboard attractions and amenities,” says the team behind  EatSleepCruise.com . “To get the most value for your money, we’d suggest looking at ships which are between 5 and 7 years old. These will still offer some of the best on-board options in terms of restaurants, entertainment, and nightlife but will be considerably cheaper than ships which are 1 or 2 years old.”

Use a trusted travel advisor

As tempting as it might be to go it alone, booking through a travel agency—ideally, one specializing in cruises—will frequently result in the best deals. Because they deal with the cruise lines often, travel advisors may know how to find the best discounts, too.

“Travel advisors can access the best perks, like on-board credit and free gratuities, as well as other promotions in addition to the deals the cruise line might be offering at that time,” say Don and Heidi of EatSleepCruise.com . “Additionally, they’ll be able to help with any issues that may arise before or during your trip.”

If you know the specific line and departure date you want to take but don’t know a good travel agent to book it with,  CruiseCompete.com , which has been running since 2003, allows travelers to obtain free price quotes from multiple travel agents at the same time. Many of them will throw in upgrades or onboard credits to earn your business.

6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

G etting a really great deal on a cruise is getting harder. Strong demand for cruises over the past year has allowed cruise lines to raise fares sharply and cut back on last-minute discounts to fill unsold cabins.

One line recently said bookings have been so strong that it would be stopping all last-minute discounts indefinitely .

As a result, the fares you'll find for cruises this year are significantly higher — by 20% or more — than they were in 2019, the last normal year for cruising.

So how do you get the best cruise deal if you're trying to book a cruise for this coming winter and beyond?

To start — don't panic. Even if fares for the coming year don't come down soon, you can find ways to save when booking a vacation at sea.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Below, we've assembled six of our top tips for finding a bargain on a cruise. These are travel hacks that can work any time — not just when fares are rising. Combine a few of these strategies, and you are sure to find the best cruise deals available on your next sailing.

Cruise during the offseason

As is the case for resorts on land, the floating resorts that are cruise ships can be significantly less expensive during the "offseason" travel months of September, October and November.

These are months when kids are typically back in school and family travel drops off, resulting in diminished demand for many types of travel, including cruises.

In the Caribbean, these months also fall during hurricane season, which keeps some people away from both land resorts and cruise ships in the region.

Related: Read this before booking a cruise during hurricane season

In addition to the fall months, the offseason period for cruising generally includes parts of January and February, but it varies by region.

Traditionally, the summer months of June, July and August have been high season in many cruise destinations like the Caribbean, Europe and Alaska. The periods around major holidays — such as Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day — also are considered the busy season for cruising and bring higher prices.

It's a growing truism of the cruise world: the earlier you book, the better price you'll get.

Cruise lines often open departures for bookings with the lowest prices at which they want to sell the trips. Then, as the departures start filling up, they slowly raise prices on the remaining inventory.

To get the best price on any particular sailing, your best bet, in many cases, is to book right when the sailing opens for sale. This means planning way in advance, as many cruise lines open their reservations for sailings two or even three years before departure.

Booking far in advance can pay off in more ways than one. One big advantage to booking ahead of time is that you're far more likely to get the exact cabin type you want. On many ships, the least expensive cabins and most expensive suites often sell out first and quickly.

Related: How to pick the perfect cruise line for you

Worried you might miss out on a deal by booking a cruise super far in advance? Here's the good news: If, for some reason, the cost of your cruise drops at a later date, you often can get your fare reduced to match the lower price. This is often the case until the last few months before the sailing begins, when the cruise enters what's known as the "final payment" window. At that point, the fare you've paid is locked in.

Note that not all fare types allow for changes to the fare you've paid after booking. It's important to read the fine print for the fare category you're booking.

As noted above, cruise lines typically offer their lowest fare for any given sailing just after it opens for booking — often two or even three years before it's scheduled to begin.

Generally, the fare will only go up as the sailing date approaches. But in some cases, cruise lines will drop the price of a cruise significantly at the last minute. This can happen when the line finds itself with a lot of unsold cabins for a voyage.

If you're flexible and can travel on short notice, you sometimes can find a last-minute deal for cruises where the line is scrambling to fill berths.

A key thing to know here is that last-minute discounting isn't as common as it used to be. Like airlines, cruise lines have become much more savvy about revenue management over the years, and it's rarer that they find themselves with a lot of unsold inventory on sailings just before departure.

You'll also have to be flexible to take advantage of these deals. If you have a specific cabin type on a specific sailing on a specific ship that you're eyeing for a vacation, you can't count on it being available — especially not at a rock-bottom rate.

Sail on an older ship

At many big lines, you'll find that the newest, most amenity-filled cruise ships sell at a premium price. Older ships come with a discount.

The older ships are, of course, older, and they sometimes don't have quite as much to offer on board as the newer ships. But if you're looking for a deal, they can bring great value.

Use a travel agent

Are you a plan-it-yourself type of traveler? We get it. Many of TPG's staffers are that way, too.

But even if you book all your land trips on your own, you might want to use a travel agent who is a cruise specialist to book your next voyage.

One big reason is that cruise-selling travel agents often have access to lower bulk fares for sailings that aren't available to the general public. Big travel agencies will block out large chunks of cabins on ships soon after they open for booking to lock in such group fares, then sell them over the coming months.

In addition to lower fares, cruise travel agents also sometimes throw in extra perks like onboard credit or amenities when you book through them.

Travel agents specializing in cruising also will be able to guide you through the many types of cabin categories on some cruise ships and steer you away from cabins to avoid . Plus, they'll be there for you when things go wrong on a cruise .

Consider a repositioning cruise

Some of the best bargains in the cruise world are the voyages that cruise ships make as they reposition from one part of the world to another.

This is because cruise lines often have trouble selling these trips, which typically have somewhat oddball itineraries with very few port calls and lots of sea days. They also tend to be a bit longer than standard weekend getaways or weeklong voyages. They have to discount the trips to fill the ships as much as possible.

Among the most common repositioning cruises are sailings between the Caribbean and Europe in the spring as lines move ships to the Mediterranean for summer. Similarly, there's always a wave of repositioning cruises between Europe and the Caribbean in the fall.

You'll also find some repositioning cruises every year between the Caribbean and Alaska, and between the West Coast of the U.S. and Asia.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE 2024-26 GUIDE

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the  destinations  you sail to and the  shore excursions  available at each port, to a full range of  entertainment  and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.

Celebrity ascent: the best dining, amenities and more on celebrity cruises' newest ship.

Top-notch eateries, adults-only areas and entertainment options stand out.

Celebrity Ascent Review

The Solarium on the Celebrity Ascent.

Megan duBois

Key Takeaways

  • There are 32 different dining and drinking venues on board, from Le Voyage by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud to the line's iconic Martini Bar.
  • The onboard entertainment is incredible. The "Awaken" show combines popular music with acrobatics and lasers, while Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night invites cruisers to don metallic or sequin outfits for a deck party under the stars.
  • The Solarium adults-only pool area is a relaxing spot with comfortable lounge chairs, a pool and hot tubs; head to Eden for delightful cocktails and optimal sunset views.

You can think of Celebrity Cruises as the more adult cousin of Royal Caribbean International – which makes sense, considering both cruise lines are owned by Royal Caribbean Group. With all of the recent buzz around both brands, I was excited to sail on Celebrity Cruises' newest ship, Celebrity Ascent, in its debut month. I embarked out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023.

The 17-deck, 141,420-ton ship has 1,646 staterooms and can carry 3,260 guests at double occupancy. At 1,073 feet long and 128 feet wide, the ship has plenty of space for upscale amenities, edgy entertainment and incredible dining venues. The Edge Series ship also has more than 1,400 crew members who hail from 60 different countries around the world.

As an avid cruiser who has taken more than 50 ocean and river voyages on almost a dozen cruise lines, I found Celebrity Ascent lived up to the hype. The ship itself is stunning, and each area has a distinct vibe. I loved the ample amount of food and drink opportunities – there are 32 different venues – and the standout onboard entertainment was like nothing I had seen before on a cruise ship.

Celebrity Ascent itineraries

Thermal suite heated loungers on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent sails around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean over the next few years. Summer 2024 brings Ascent to Mediterranean ports of call in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. The Mediterranean season ends in October 2024, with a 13-night transatlantic sailing departing from Barcelona, Spain.

Late fall and winter sailings depart from Fort Lauderdale. The Caribbean season runs between November 2024 and April 2025. It includes seven- to nine-night voyages calling on ports like Aruba , Bonaire and Curacao ; Bimini, Bahamas ; Labadee, Haiti; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands ; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; and St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In late April 2025, it's back to the Mediterranean for the 2025 season between May and October. Ascent then returns to the Caribbean for sailings in late 2025; destinations include southern Caribbean locales, plus the Panama Canal and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Similar Caribbean sailings are also on sale for early 2026.

Who should sail on Celebrity Ascent?

Sunset Bar on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent, like its Edge Series sister ships, caters to adults traveling together. The overall vibe of the ship is upscale and modern, with plenty of places to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and watch a show. Couples can enjoy an elevated date night in Le Grand Bistro, while the aptly named Sunset Bar – which overlooks the rear of the ship – is the spot to be with a cocktail in hand as the sun sets into the horizon. This bar was easily my favorite spot on board; I spent most afternoons here enjoying a cocktail.

The deck parties, of which Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night is the premier event, are a fun time – but they aren't so loud that guests can hear the bass thumping in the staterooms below. Shows at The Theatre are fully immersive, with incredible technology and great music that had me dancing in my seat.

If you are traveling with children, know that there aren't many places on board for kids to just hang out and be kids. The Camp at Sea kids club is crammed into a small area on Deck 3, away from the main Grand Plaza and The Martini Bar.

Cruises on Ascent can be expensive, but Celebrity often runs deals on sailings. Without any promotions, sailings around the Mediterranean in 2024 and 2025 may run between about $1,000 and $5,600 per person. In comparison, 2024 and 2025 Caribbean voyages may cost between about $2,000 and $4,400 per person before discounts. (Note: Cruise rates can change frequently, based on demand and availability.)

The stateroom

Stateroom interior on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are over two dozen different stateroom styles on Celebrity Ascent. The smallest (and usually cheapest) rooms are the Inside Staterooms, which offer between 181 and 202 square feet of space. For solo travelers, the Single Inside Staterooms offer the same amenities as a double occupancy room, but with a smaller 103-square-foot layout and no single supplement fee at booking.

Ocean View Staterooms are slightly larger, at 200 to 242 square feet. There are three different room styles; the main difference among them is the size of the window. Options range from small windows in the middle of the wall to large, floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

Ascent's balcony cabins are quite varied, but the majority are Infinite Veranda Staterooms, where the balcony is actually a uniquely designed window that can be opened to let the ocean breeze in. There is a set of glass doors that can be drawn to make this space more private, as well.

Concierge Staterooms allow guests access to a dedicated concierge staff and exclusive onboard events. AquaClass cabins all feature the infinite balcony design, plus unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite, complimentary dining at Blu restaurant, fitness classes and a spa concierge.

Celebrity Ascent's suites are all part of The Retreat, the line's ship-within-a-ship concept where cruisers have access to an exclusive restaurant, a sun deck with a pool, a lounge and a dedicated crew. Suites range in size and style, from smaller 319-square-foot studios to massive two-bedroom suites offering more than 2,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

When I sailed on Celebrity Ascent, I stayed in an AquaClass stateroom. The main living space had a king-size bed, which was cozy after long days of exploring the ship and nights spent on the dance floor. I found the cabin's couch a bit uncomfortable, but there was plenty of storage space in the large closet and drawers. Conveniently, the bed was high enough to fit my suitcases under.

Because this was my first time in an Infinite Veranda room, I was interested to see how the balcony actually worked. After pressing a button for the window to roll down, my room instantly filled with humid air – not the sea breeze I was expecting. The air conditioner also turns off when the window is down, so it takes a long time for the room to cool off again. I only opened the window once because of this. For me, the extra veranda space served as more of a sitting area to take in the views than a spot to enjoy the ocean breeze.

My stateroom's bathroom was spacious, with a larger-than-usual standup rain shower. I also loved the eco-friendly bath amenities, which smelled divine. I used the in-room bathrobes and slippers every day of the cruise.

I loved that my AquaClass stateroom came with some amenities that are not included in other Infinite Veranda rooms. There were two yoga mats, two bottles of water that were refreshed daily, a welcome bottle of sparkling wine, an umbrella, binoculars, complimentary shoeshine service and a pillow menu. AquaClass guests also have unlimited access to the spa's thermal suite, complimentary fitness classes and a dedicated spa concierge. I went to the thermal suite daily to enjoy the heated loungers and steam rooms.

Best amenities on Celebrity Ascent

Theater show on the Celebrity Ascent.

On Celebrity Ascent, you'll never be bored. Over just a few days, I was able to participate in game shows and dance parties, sit back and enjoy live music, and spend some time by the pool. While I don't gamble, the casino always seemed to be full when I walked by, and someone was always cheering about hitting the jackpot.

For live entertainment, be sure to catch Flash Flair Fusion, the nightly bartending performance at the Martini Bar. Meanwhile, the Theatre hosted three main shows during my sailing: "Residency," "Awaken" and "Bridges." (Based on my experience, "Awaken" is the production to prioritize.)

Additionally, The Club hosts most of the ship's game shows and some smaller live music events. I loved hanging out at this venue; it was never overly packed with people, and the games were pure fun. I even got called up on stage to participate in one of the games and ended up winning a Celebrity Cruises-branded hat.

For some outdoor fun, hit the onboard pickleball court. Or, head to the Rooftop Garden, where float pools face the ocean and plenty of comfy seating awaits. I loved how lush this space felt, thanks to all of the live plants surrounding the seating areas. This is also the spot to catch movies at night.

If you're looking for an even more unique place to hang out, head to The Magic Carpet. This bright orange, glass-encased bar hangs out over the side of the ship and is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink. The Magic Carpet can move up and down the side of the ship, docking at select decks for a set amount of time. I loved hanging here at night as the ship was pulling out of port to see the islands light up and watch other ships pass by.

When planning out your evenings, keep in mind that it can be a trek to get from one onboard activity to the next – especially when there is very little time between many of the major scheduled events. One night, I started in The Club to watch a game show, then immediately had to get to the Theatre. After the theater performance, I had to walk the entire length of the ship and take the stairs to get to the night show in Eden. Then, after Eden, it was time for the Shine the Night deck party. By the time I got back to my stateroom, I was exhausted.

Best dining venues on Celebrity Ascent

Pastries at Le Grand Bistro on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are 32 different spots for food and drinks on Celebrity Ascent, including four main dining rooms; four casual complimentary eateries; eight specialty restaurants; 14 cafes, lounges and bars; and two exclusive venues.

Included with the base fare are meals at the four main dining rooms, all of which serve the same menus every day, plus a small exclusive menu that's tailored to the theme of each restaurant. (For example, if you're dining in Cyprus, there is a small list of Cyprus-exclusive dishes that highlight Mediterranean cuisine, while the Normandie restaurant serves up French favorites.)

Other restaurants included in the cruise rate are Eden Cafe & Bar, which serves light bites and sweets; Mast Grill, offering burgers and salads; and Oceanview Cafe, a buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For an additional cost, head to specialty dining venues like the stunning Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, which is great for date night; Le Grand Bistro, a fun take on a classic French Bistro; or Eden Restaurant, which features an entirely plant-based menu.

My favorite specialty dining option – and overall favorite restaurant on the ship – was Raw on 5. It features stunning chilled seafood towers, fresh sashimi and hot dishes like fresh lobster and shrimp wontons. Each dish was prepared beautifully, the service was top-notch and our table next to the window offered great views.

However, one restaurant I would skip is Fine Cut Steakhouse. It is a pretty standard steakhouse, and nothing on the menu really stood out to me. The upscale ambiance was also diminished by music floating in from the nearby Grand Plaza and Martini Bar (think: everything from One Direction to Cher). While both artists are great to hear while sipping a martini in a public space, I don't want to hear them while dining at an expensive restaurant.

Best excursions on Celebrity Ascent

Outdoor sundeck on the Celebrity Ascent.

Travelers cruising to the Caribbean should book a beach outing. There are abundant excursion options in St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands . If you're into local brews, try the Small Group: Brewery & Beach Tour Philipsburg, St. Maarten .

On a past Mediterranean cruise, I explored both Florence and Pisa, Italy, while docked in the Italian city of Livorno. Celebrity offers a similar excursion aboard the Ascent. The day trip includes a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside; exploring Florence and seeing the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo; and a trip to Pisa to see the iconic learning tower. In Rome , consider doing an all-day tour where you can see the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Square.

Regardless of where your cruise is headed, you may choose to explore ports on your own instead. If that's the case, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to the ship. I always try to return at least an hour before the scheduled sail away time.

Overall impressions of Celebrity Ascent

Rooftop Garden on the Celebrity Ascent.

When it comes to ships that cater to a mostly adult audience, Celebrity Ascent really has it all. From stunning common areas to incredible dining and entertainment, I was never bored on this ship. What I loved most was the wide range of entertainment, from pop-up music around the ship to full-blown experiences that need to be seen to be believed. The food on the ship is a step above most other major cruise lines, and the number of dining options is great, especially for longer sailings.

While I loved my room's location and amenities as a whole, I found the Infinite Veranda design to be a bit of a waste. When I did use it, my room got hot quickly and took a while to cool back down. I would consider booking a traditional veranda cabin next time, or a stateroom with a large picture window to save some money without sacrificing the ocean views.
