Ranikhet, India: Your handbook to ‘Land of the Queen’

Ranikhet is a beautiful small cantonment town in Almora district of Uttarakhand. People often tend to overlook Ranikhet because it is not so popular in comparison to Nainital, Mussoorie , or Dhanaulti. But, the OGs know that’s what makes it even better! Spectacular views, dense forests, high mountains, culture, heritage, flora, fauna, you name it and Ranikhet, India has it. We bet you’ve heard of Ranikhet but did they tell you how much it has, to offer?

This blog is going to walk you through (probably) everything you need to know before planning a trip or visiting Ranikhet. From it’s best time to the climate, how to reach, things to do, and everything else.

The backstory of Ranikhet

The name Ranikhet is made of two words; ‘Rani’ means Queen and ‘Khet’ means farm/meadow. In ancient times, Kumaoni people had inhabited the area and traces were visible of the Katyuri dynasty through temples and remains from the 9th and 10th CE. The name also traces back to those times. It is believed that the Katyuri dynasty’s ruler Raja Sudhardev stole Rani Padmini’s heart. She chose this place as her residence and named it Ranikhet.

During the colonial times, Ranikhet gained the attention of the British Army. Then onwards, it didn’t take long for Ranikhet to become a significant cantonment zone with a regiment established in 1903. Post- Independence, it continued to be an important headquarters, and eventually a Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum was set up to showcase the ‘backstory’

Kathgodam to Ranikhet is a distance of about 74 km which is a 2.5 hour drive.  The train runs between Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and Kathgodam station in Uttarakhand.

By Road: Ranikhet has considerably good road connectivity and is easy to access by car or bus. Delhi to Ranikhet distance by road is 350 kms which takes about 8-10 hours. If you are coming from Nainital to Ranikhet, it is only a 60 km journey, the Haldwani distance to Ranikhet is also the same. While Almora to Ranikhet is a distance of 50 km.

Things to Do in Ranikhet

Jhula devi temple:.

Ranikhet is famous for this ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Jhula Devi and attracts devotes from across the country. It is known for its wish-fulfilling powers and clusters of countless bells hung by the devotees after their wish has been fulfilled.

If the idea of picking fruits in orchards of apples, Plums and peaches excites you, Ensure to put Chaubatia on your list. It is a beautiful orchard and a walk through it is like a setback from the race of life.

Katarmal Sun Temple:

We’ve all heard of Konark Temple, but have you heard of Katarmal Sun Temple? It is the second most significant Sun temple in our country. The architecture is a marvel to look at and stands tall even after 800 years. It is among the tourist places in Ranikhet which are a testimony of art, heritage and time.

Swargashram Binsar Mahadev Mandir:

An ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva among Deodar trees and views of the mountains. It is believed that the temple was built by Raja Pithu in memory of his father Bindu, and it is also known as Bindeshwar Temple, Ranikhet India.

Naukuchiatal:

Naukuchiatal is a pristine lake located in the Ranikhet district of Uttarakhand. One can go boating here, do picnics or even sit on adjacent benches while enjoying the views and quacking of ducks.

Upat Golf Course:

Also known as Ranikhet Golf Course, Upat Golf Course is one of Asia’s highest golf courses. It is situated at an altitude of 6,132 m and offers breathtaking views to the players.

Bhimtal, an ancient locale, derives its name from Bhima, a character in the Mahabharata. The Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple, an age-old Shiva temple situated on the shores of Bhimtal Lake, is believed to have been constructed during the banishment period (vanvas) of the Pandavas when Bhima visited the area. Bhimtal predates the nearby Nainital, which is a relatively young city, being only 150–160 years old. It served as a stopover on the old pedestrian road connecting Kathgodam to the entire Kumaon region and even extending to Nepal and Tibet. It is speculated to have been a part of the ancient Silk Route.

Apart from these, you can do trekking, bird spotting, cultural exploration, and souvenir shopping in Ranikhet.  While you visit places in Ranikhet, please be responsible towards nature!

Best places to visit around Ranikhet

Almora and Ranikhet almost go hand in hand because Ranikhet is in Almora. If you are visiting Ranikhet, there’s no reason not to visit Almora. Almora is located on a ridge at the southern edge of the Kumaon Hills of the Himalayas range. It is a charming village with lovely views, trekking trails, ancient temples and opportunities for cultural exchange.

If you love exploring heritage and culture, Dwarahat should be on your list. Dwarahat is also called ‘Temple Village’  because it has over 55 temples. Perhaps, there is a also lot of celebration on festivals and other occasions. Indulge in folk music, dance and local carnivals.

Popularly known as the ‘Fruit Bowl of the state’s heart’, Bhowali is located at a distance of 46 km from Ranikhet. Bhowali has excellent vegetation and yields a variety of fruits like strawberries, apples, apricots, peaches, and plums. Three words that describe Bhowali the best are Fruits, Fauna, and Fascination. The region is home to rich wildlife and exotic birds like sunbirds and warblers. The views of lakes, mountains, and birds with the taste of fresh fruits, water, and air is an entire fascination come true!

Majkhali is the closest among the places to visit near Ranikhet. Located at a distance of only about 12 km from Ranikhet village, Majkhali is most famous for Ma Kali’s temple. Nainital:

Does Nainital even need an introduction? It is amongst the most popular hill stations in India and has captivated the hearts of people since very long back in time. Ranikhet to Nainital distance is about 57 kms which is almost a 2 hour drive. If you haven’t visited Nainital yet, don’t miss out.

You’ve caught a glimpse of Kausani previously. Guess where? In Hrithik Roshan’s blockbuster ‘Koi Mil Gaya’. The movie was mostly shot in Kausani, Bhimtaal and Nainital. Kausani is known by a lot of names like ‘Switzerland of India’ for example. One can spend a few peaceful days here while doing new things like spotting rare birds, enjoying one of the best Panoramic views of the Himalayas, going for a hike or enjoying the local village vibe. The distance from Ranikhet to Kausani is around 57 km.

Best time to visit Ranikhet

Best time to visit Ranikhet hugely depends on your preferences. If you like pleasant weather, not having to wear layers of clothes and summer fun is your thing, then summer is the best time. Monsoons transition the landscape into lush green but it is risky to travel while it is pouring in the mountains. The winter months can be really chilly and you might (very less chances) get to witness the Ranikhet snowfall, but overall no risk for winter travellers!

By now, you know probably everything you need to know about Ranikhet, India. Ranikhet is the Himalayan escape you didn’t know you needed. So go that adventure, have an amazing journey and stay safe.

Looking to see the planetary parade June 3? NASA says you may be disappointed. Here's why.

If you're wanting to see a parade of planets, experts say later this month may be better for viewing an actual celestial show..

places to visit with ranikhet

Folks who are expecting to see a dazzling parade of planets on Monday June 3 may be disappointed by what they end up seeing in the sky and, instead, experts are saying they should manage their expectations and wait until the end of the month to see the planetary alignment .

The past couple of months have been pretty eventful for backyard astronomers. First, the solar eclipse in April, then the northern lights made a rare appearance in May, and now a parade of planets will make its 2024 debut.

Stargazers are supposed to be able to see six planets, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Neptune and Saturn, aligned.

However, experts from NASA and Astronomers Without Borders both agree that it won't be the best time to see the planetary parade. That's because Uranus, Mercury and Jupiter will be swallowed up by the sun's light and be too close to the horizon to be visible.

Northern lights: Northern lights in US were dim compared to 'last time mother nature showed off': What to know

Experts say be patient: Planet parade will be more of a show later in June

"To me, the closest thing to a planet parade is June 29th, when you’ll have Saturn, the third-quarter Moon, Mars, and Jupiter arrayed across the sky at dawn," Preston Dyches, a public engagement specialist for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory told USA TODAY. Dyches has a background in astronomy and hosts NASA's " What's Up ," a monthly video series that describes what's happening in the night sky.

Andrew Fazekas, the communications manager for Astronomers Without Borders, says that when it comes to the planetary parade on June 3, it will be nearly impossible to see all the planets with the naked eye.

Both Fazekas and Dyches agree that it's better to see the planetary parade on June 29, instead.

On June 3, Jupiter, Mercury and Uranus are going to be "way too close to the sun," said Fazekas. So, it will be difficult to see those three planets.

So, folks who do decide to rise before the sun does on Monday morning just to get a glimpse at this celestial phenomenon could be setting themselves up for disappointment.

In this case, good things come to those who wait. And waiting until the end of the month will give stargazers a better chance at viewing the planets.

"If you're patient and you wait until the end of the month, these planets will move farther away from the sun higher up in the early morning sky," Fazekas told USA TODAY "So, that you will get an easier chance to pick them out in the sky.

Folks will not only get a better view of the planetary parade if they wait until June 29, but they'll be able to gaze at the stars on Friday night into Saturday morning, instead of having to view it during the work week like they would this Monday morning.

Excitement from solar eclipse, northern lights creating planet parade hype

People are expecting to see something amazing the morning of June 3, said Fazekas. But, he's worried the expectations set by two very viral celestial events, the solar eclipse and northern lights, and sensationalization on social media could raise people's expectations a bit too high and lead to a lackluster experience.

He adds that he's concerned one bad experience that was overhyped online could steal people's enthusiasm about astronomy.

"What worries me is that we set people up for disappointment," said Fazekas "And then they won't want to do it again."

According to Fazekas, he's never seen so many people interested in sky-watching, and he doesn't want the excitement to end.

What will you be able to see?

According to a program called SkySafari Pro, you will be able to see the following during the planetary parade on June 29:

  • Jupiter, which will be closest to the horizon.

What is a planetary parade?

Basically, it's when the planets form a straight line and look like they're marching across the night sky and form a sort of space parade.

It's also known as a large planetary alignment, states Delaware Online , a part of the USA TODAY Network.

What equipment do you need to view a planetary parade?

According to Fazekas, you will still need binoculars and telescopes to see some of the planets.

"Neptune is a planet that you need strong binoculars or a small telescope to be able to see," said Fazekas. "And it's not easy to find either."

Folks who go out to stargaze on June 28, will be able to see Neptune right next to the moon. On June 29, it will be farther away from the moon, and be above it instead.

Apps, like Skyview on the Apple app store, can turn people's phones into a tool that helps them identify celestial bodies in the night sky.

Where will you be able to see the planetary parade?

According to Fazekas, people will need to do the following to get a view of the planetary parade:

  • Get up early, before sunrise.
  • Find a spot with a clear view that faces the east or southeastern sky.
  • Have your binoculars or telescope ready to view planets that aren't visible to the naked eye.

NASA Starliner launch: Best places to see from Sebastian, Vero, Fort Pierce, Jensen Beach

Can you see a rocket launch from cape canaveral all the way in sebastian, vero beach or fort pierce weather permitting, yes..

Godspeed, Starliner. After an initial attempt, Boeing's  maiden crewed flight  has been rescheduled, delayed and now possibly ready to launch.

Boeing is preparing to launch its  Starliner capsule on its first crewed mission from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station . And the Treasure Coast may get a peek at the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket lifting off into the sky.

As of Thursday, May 30, Starliner has a launch date of Saturday, June 1 (see below). If the launch time and date changes, this story will be updated.

On board the ULA Atlas V rocket will be two NASA astronauts. Flying this commercial crew mission are  Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams , both Navy test pilots. They have each flown in space twice (more info about them below).

Day or night, watching a rocket launch on the beach is  so  Florida. But can you see a rocket launch liftoff from Cape Canaveral all the way in Sebastian, Vero Beach, or even up to Fort Pierce?

Weather permitting and depending on cloud cover, yes. We have suggestions on where and how to watch a rocket launch from Indian River County to Martin County below if you keep scrolling and information on the historic Starliner launch.

What is Boeing's Starliner?

Boeing's Starliner spacecraft will transport NASA astronauts. The company calls it the  Crew Space Transportation (CST)-100 Starliner, or simply “Starliner ." Set to launch no earlier than Saturday, June 1, 2024, it will make history as the first spacecraft to ferry humans from Space Launch Complex 41 in Cape Canaveral. The launch pad has been the site for historic missions beginning with the Titan rockets in 1965 and including the New Horizons deep space probe, the Voyager spacecraft, and even the Curiosity Mars rover.

Starliner will be launched with the help of a United Launch Alliance (a partnership between Boeing and Lockheed Martin) Atlas V rocket. The Atlas V rocket has launched from the site since 2002, but this will be the first time it carries astronauts to space.

What launches from where?  Years after space shuttle retirement, Florida chases nearly 70 launches a year

Who are the NASA astronauts flying into space for Starliner launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida?

The two NASA astronauts flying this commercial crew mission are  Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams . Both are Navy test pilots. They have each flown in space twice and both bring a wide variety of experiences to the flight.

Williams was originally a helicopter test pilot before switching to flying jets. She's preparing to fly to space for the third time, as the crew test flight pilot.

This will be Wilmore's third spaceflight as well. Before becoming a NASA astronaut, Wilmore was a U.S. Navy captain, fighter pilot, and test pilot, accumulating more than 8,000 hours of flight time. Wilmore flew the FA-18 Hornet and T-45 Goshawk, playing a role in missions during Operation Desert Storm, Desert Shield and Southern Watch.

Is there a rocket launch in Florida? NASA’s Boeing Starliner crewed flight test

  • Mission:   NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore will fly aboard a Boeing Starliner spacecraft  and a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket to the International Space Station.
  • Launch:  no earlier than 12:25 p.m. EDT Saturday, June 1 (postponed after a May 6 scrub)
  • Location:  Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station
  • Trajectory:  Northeast
  • Live coverage:  Starts at noon EDT Saturday, June 1, at  floridatoday.com/space . You can download the free app for iPhone or Android or type  floridatoday.com/space  into your browser

Where can I see a Florida rocket launch in Indian River County, St. Lucie County and Martin County?

The best views to watch a rocket launch is along the beach. Visibility in Indian River County,  St. Lucie County  and Martin County, part of the Treasure Coast, will depend on weather conditions and cloud cover, and people should make sure not to block traffic or rights of way on bridges and to follow posted rules at beaches. Look due north.

• Pretty much anywhere in neighboring Brevard County, you'll get a view of the rocket launch. That includes  Melbourne Beach , which borders Indian River County, or from Grant-Valkaria along the Indian River Lagoon.
