PGA TOUR Canada announces 2022 Fortinet Cup schedule

pga tour canada 2022 schedule

TORONTO, Ont. —  Featuring a regular season that begins in early June and ends in mid-September, PGA TOUR Canada announced its 2022 schedule Tuesday for the Fortinet Cup as part of the season-long competition. Fortinet announced it will be the Tour’s Cup sponsor as the Tour awards points based on player performance, with a $100,000 bonus pool up for grabs for the top competitors.

PGA TOUR Canada’s regular season is offering a return to full-action and Korn Ferry Tour membership to the top players, a summer lineup of 11 tournaments beginning in Victoria, British Columbia, and concluding in Kitchener, Ontario. The Tour also will hold an official event outside Canada for the first time when players travel to Brainerd, Minnesota, late in the summer.

PGA TOUR Canada did not play in 2020 due to issues surrounding the global pandemic, and it organized and hosted a scaled-down, eight-tournament Tour in 2021 mainly for players residing in Canada. This will be the first season since 2019 that features full fields and a path for players to reach the Korn Ferry Tour.

“This is a significant time in the history of PGA TOUR Canada as we begin the Fortinet Cup era. The Fortinet Cup offers players the ability to compete on some of the best golf courses in Canada—along with the added bonus of another tournament played in the U.S.,” said PGA TOUR Canada Executive Director Scott Pritchard. “Spanning coast to coast, the 2022 schedule is one we are proud to announce and is already setting up for a triumphant return of PGA TOUR Canada.”

“Fortinet is excited to partner with PGA TOUR Canada. The Tour delivers an amazing experience—in equal measure for its fans and golfers. As PGA TOUR Canada’s premier sponsor and the host of Fortinet Cup, our company will bring its deep expertise in cybersecurity innovation to the world of golf,” said Marc Asturias, Vice President of Marketing and Government Vertical at Fortinet Latin America and Canada. “Our partnership furthers Fortinet’s vision to make possible a digital world that we can always trust by securing people, devices, and data everywhere.”

The season gets underway June 2-5 at a familiar Tour site, Uplands Golf Course, for the newly named Royal Beach Victoria Open presented by Times Colonist. After a scheduled one-week break for the PGA TOUR’s RBC Canadian Open, players will tee it up three weeks in a row, starting the week of June 13-19, at the ATB Classic presented by Volvo Edmonton, followed by the Elk Ridge Open (June 23-26) in the Resort Village of Elk Ridge in Waskesiu, Saskatchewan, and the Prince Edward Island Open in Cardigan (June 30-July 3).

The Tour observes a two-week break to begin July before resuming action in Ontario, for the Osprey Valley Open presented by Voroantim Cimentos CBM Aggregates (July 21-24) in the Toronto suburb of Caledon. The Ontario Open (July 28-31) in Tottenham is the next week, bringing July to a close. The Quebec Open is scheduled for August 4-7 in Blainville, with another off week preceding the Manitoba Open (August 18-21).

The visit to Minnesota, for the CRMC Championship presented by Gertens (August 25-28), and the next week’s GolfBC Championship (September 1-4) in Kelowna, British Columbia, bring August to an end and takes the players into September. The season concludes September 12-18 at the Fortinet Cup Championship, the Tour’s best players from the Points List assembling for the first time at Deer Ridge Golf Club and the Fortinet Cup final positions decided, as well as the $100,000 bonus pool for the top-10 players. The overall Fortinet Cup champion will pocket $25,000.

“It’s exciting to think where we are beginning and culminating our season, along with the other nine cities and golf courses we’ll visit during the year. There is so much to look forward to, the ATB Classic returning to Edmonton, PGA TOUR player Graham DeLaet serving as the honorary chair at the Elk Ridge Open, having the Ontario Open and its storied history as part of our schedule and visiting TPC Toronto, one of the premier TPC facilities in the network,” Pritchard explained. “Traveling outside Canada to Minnesota for a tournament, with Tom Lehman significantly involved, spending a week in Quebec and moving the GolfBC Championship to a September date for the first time are all things we’re anxiously anticipating.

“In addition,” Pritchard continued, “Prince Edward Island has had to wait a year to make its official debut on our schedule, and Manitoba is also back after a two-year hiatus. It will be great to play our tournaments in those two regions. I simply can’t be more excited about what we will offer this year’s crop of players.”

PGA TOUR Canada began in 2013 as the PGA TOUR’s second International Tour. Since its inception, the Tour has seen 14 of its alums win 16 PGA TOUR titles, while 46 past PGA TOUR Canada players have collected 49 total Korn Ferry Tour victories.

The Tour has already held five of its seven Qualifying Tournaments to determine its complete 2022 player roster. This week the Tour is conducting its sixth qualifier, in the Tacoma, Washington, area, with the final Qualifying Tournament in Canada to follow. The first five medalists during this Qualifying Tournament season are Alex Herrmann and Austin Hitt (from the Florida tournaments), amateur Jacob Bridgeman (from the Alabama qualifier), Max Marsico (from the Arizona qualifier) and Jake Vincent (from the California qualifier).

Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada Announces 2022 Qualifying Tournament Schedule

Seven Sites, Including Courtenay, BC's Crowne Isle Resort, Will Host The PGA TOUR Canada's 2022 Qualifying Tournaments - Image Courtesy Golf Vancouver Island

FOR RELEASE: December 28, 2021

TORONTO—The Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada announced December 28 it will hold 2022 Qualifying Tournaments at seven separate sites over a six-week period, beginning in mid-February and concluding in late-April at Courtenay, BC's Crowne Isle Resort.

While the global pandemic made it difficult for PGA TOUR Canada to conduct its season as it had since its 2013 inception, the Tour did play a series of eight tournaments for players living in Canada this past summer on top of a set of four events it held in 2020. The 2022 campaign will be the first full season in two years that features a complete complement of members.

Registration for the tournaments begins January 4, 2022 at noon EST. Players can access the registration site here .

“It is so exciting to look forward to next season and everything that is in place for a very successful 2022,” said Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada Executive Director Scott Pritchard. “In years past, we’ve been fortunate to have so many players interested in qualifying to compete on PGA TOUR Canada. We anticipate the demand will be similar to what we have experienced in the past as players know the caliber of competition PGA TOUR Canada offers.

“We look forward,” Pritchard continued, “to hosting players at each of these seven outstanding courses as they begin on their paths to reaching the PGA TOUR.”

Six of the Qualifying Tournaments will be in the United States, with one in Canada. The qualifiers begin with two in Florida (Weston and Howey-in-the-Hills). The Howey-in-the-Hills tournament will be held simultaneously with the event in Dothan, Alabama. Following those three tournaments, the Tour moves west in April for qualifiers in Arizona (Litchfield Park), California (San Jacinto) and Washington (DuPont) before playing its final qualifier in Canada at a familiar site, Crowne Isle Resort and Golf Club, in Courtenay, British Columbia.

The seven, 72-hole, no-cut Qualifying Tournaments will all be Tuesday-to-Friday events and take place on the following dates and locations:

pga tour canada 2022 schedule

“What’s heartening is we are familiar with each one of these venues, and they are all high-quality golf facilities that have either hosted previous PGA TOUR Canada qualifiers or other PGA TOUR International Tour qualifiers,” Pritchard added.

A year ago, Colombia’s Camilo Aguado earned PGA TOUR Canada status and ended up playing on the Forme Tour after capturing medalist honors at The Club at Weston Hills’ Qualifying Tournament.

Mission Inn Resort and Club’s El Campeon Course is a well-known site for both Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada and PGA TOUR Latinoamérica Qualifying Tournaments. It has previously hosted five PGA TOUR Canada qualifiers, with Luis Gagne (2021), Isaiah Salinda (2020), John Coultas (2019), Dawson Armstrong (2018) and Jake Knapp (2017) emerging as medalists.

The RTJ Golf Trail at Highland Oaks is familiar with PGA TOUR Canada Qualifying Tournaments, twice a host venue. Previous medalists are Keenan Huskey (2021) and Cameron Young (2020)—Young a rookie on the 2021-22 PGA TOUR.

Jeffrey Kang was the medalist earlier this year, in March, when he won the Qualifying Tournament at Soboba Springs Golf Course in San Jacinto, California, the first time the course served as host. Arizona’s iconic Wigwam was where amateur Clay Feagler was the medalist just a few weeks before his Pepperdine team won the NCAA Championship. The Home Course in the Tacoma suburb of DuPont also was a first-timer, in June, with Canadian Callum Davison the medalist. Davison holds 2022 PGA TOUR Canada status via his Points List win on the series of Canada-based events this past summer.

The Qualifying Tournament season concludes at Crowne Isle Resort and Golf Club, a six-time PGA TOUR Canada Qualifying Tournament host. Previous medalists were Andrew McCain (2019), Jake Shuman (2018), Horacio León (2017), Aaron Wise (2016), Eric Onesi (2015) and David Bradshaw (2014).

“We will be following the sun early in the year then make our way to the warm West Coast of Canada for the final qualifier—at Crowne Isle—in advance of the start of our regular season schedule,” Pritchard continued. “What I like about this schedule is the variety of the courses where we will be holding tournaments and the unique challenges they will present to the players.”

The Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada will announce its complete regular season schedule in early 2022. Players who qualify for PGA TOUR Canada and then finish in the top five on the Points List earn Korn Ferry Tour status for the following year.

About the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada

The Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada is a series of tournaments played primarily in Canada each summer, where tomorrow’s stars begin the path to the PGA TOUR. The leading five points earners at the end of each season earn status on the Korn Ferry Tour for the following season. PGA TOUR Canada’s mission is to deliver a PGA TOUR experience for our members, fans, volunteers and its partners in order to develop the future stars of professional golf and enrich the communities the Tour visits.

PGA Championship 2024 preview: Full schedule and how to watch golf major action live

Brooks Koepka defends his PGA Championship title in the second major of 2024 at Valhalla

The 106th PGA Championship starts at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky on Thursday (16 May) with Brooks Koepka defending his title.

Ahead of the second men's golf major of 2024, Koepka has found form along with some of the sport's other top players. The reigning champion was victorious in the most recent LIV Golf series tournament in Singapore with Masters winner Scottie Scheffler prevailing in his last two PGA Tour events.

And the weekend before Valhalla, world number two Rory McIlroy - who won the PGA Championship the last time it was held at Valhalla in 2014 - beat Olympic champion Xander Schauffele by five strokes in the Wells Fargo Classic to clinch his second consecutive PGA Tour title.

Tiger Woods , who won at Valhalla back in 2000, is also in the field. Woods followed up that successful PGA Championship defence with victory in the 2001 Masters to hold all four major titles at the same time, aka the Tiger Slam.

The 48-year-old struggled to complete four rounds at the Masters, but vowed to return to the site of his fifth major triumph out of 15.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1986, Valhalla is hosting the PGA Championship for a record fourth time. It also staged the 2008 Ryder Cup with Rio 2016 gold medallist Justin Rose and former PGA Championship winners Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington the only survivors from those matches.

With notoriously firm and fast fairways, accuracy off the tee is a must in what should be a riveting four days of golf.

  • Scottie Scheffler wins 2024 Masters - results
  • How to qualify for golf at Paris 2024

Who is playing at the 2024 PGA Championship golf tournament?

A total of 156 will tee it up at Valhalla for this edition of the PGA Championship which traditionally boasts the strongest field among the four majors. Among those are the top 70 men on the PGA Championship Points list up to and including the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at the start of May.

Automatic exemptions also went to the top 20 at the PGA Professional Championship in Frisco, Texas a fortnight ago. That tournament brought together the best club pros from across the United States with Wyoming's Ben Polland taking victory.

After finishing second on his major tournament debut at the Masters, Ludvig Åberg continues his rapid rise up the golf world rankings to sixth place. The young Swede is now just one spot behind Jon Rahm who is among 16 LIV players in the field, seven of whom received "special invitations".

No fewer then 99 of the world's top 100 players will start out on Thursday with Japan's Hoshino Rikuya - ranked 94 - a late withdrawal. There are 16 former winners and 33 major champions in this year's line-up.

2024 PGA Championship - Schedule (all times subject to change)

  • Thursday 16 May : First round. Three-balls starting on the 1st and 10th holes at 7.15am (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-4)
  • Friday 17 May : Second round, followed by the cut after 36 holes, with only the top 70 players and ties making the weekend.
  • Saturday 18 May : Third round. Pairings starting on the 1st hole at 7.45am.
  • Sunday 19 May : Fourth round, followed by the Wanamaker Trophy Presentation ceremony after the final player has completed the 18th hole.

2024 Masters Tournament - Players to watch

Scottie scheffler.

With four wins from his last five starts, including his second Masters title, world number one Scheffler remains the man to beat.

In an incredible 2024 so far, his results read T5-T17-T6-T3-T10-1-1-T2-1-1. And after wife Meredith gave birth to their first child at the weekend, Scheffler will try to maintain his stellar run of form at Valhalla.

Having switched to a mallet putter, on the recommendation of his rival McIlroy, Scheffler has found his touch on the greens to match his outstanding ball-striking. Only Tiger Woods has gained more strokes from tee to green over a two-year span , and had a better PGA Tour season average than Scheffler’s 68.63 in 2023.

Having retained his PLAYERS Championship title - golf's unofficial fifth major - and won the Masters, Scheffler looks to have the best chance of any golfer since Woods to complete an unprecedented Grand Slam of majors in the professional age.

After holding off his rivals at Augusta for a second major triumph, the 27-year-old shot a superb third-round 63 at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina to take the lead in the RBC Heritage before completing his 10th PGA Tour win.

Rory McIlroy

Like Scheffler, McIlroy has won his last two starts on the PGA Tour although the American was missing on both occasions.

The Northern Irishman, who claimed the Wanamaker Trophy at Valhalla a decade ago, ended a barren run of 18 months in the United States when he teamed up with Shane Lowry to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at the end of April. The European Ryder Cup colleagues defeated Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff to take victory at TPC Louisiana.

Two weeks later, he made two eagles in a final-round 65 to pull clear of Xander Schauffele and win a fourth Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. That was his 26th PGA Tour victory and took his tally of professional titles to 40.

Returning to another course where he has enjoyed success in the past could be the answer for the 35-year-old who has not won a major since his Valhalla victory in 2014 which came three weeks after his first Open triumph at Hoylake.

In a warning to his rivals, McIlroy said after his latest triumph, "I'm a way better player now than I was back then. I haven't had the major record to back that up but I've had the wins, I've done everything else there is to do in the game since 2014. The only thing I need to do is get another major.

"A win like this going into the PGA Championship next week is a good way to prep for that."

Brooks Koepka

Koepka's win at last year's PGA Championship at Oak Hill remains the only major victory for a player in the LIV Golf series.

That was a third PGA triumph and a fifth major success for the 34-year-old Floridian who is a man never to be underestimated on the big occasion.

He warmed up for Valhalla in fine style by winning LIV Golf Singapore last week, totalling 198 in his three rounds to prevail by two strokes from Australians Marc Leishman and former Open champion Cameron Smith .

That performance followed some intense practice sessions with coach Claude Harmon III with Koepka saying, "It's all starting to come around. I feel I've put I've put in a lot of work. On the golf course, off the golf course, it's been a good two weeks to say the least.

"Taking a week off and then grinding pretty hard with Claude over the last few days, I thought that was very important. So to see it pay off here is huge."

Koepka will be among the favourites when the players tee off at Valhalla on Thursday.

PGA TOUR releases 2021-2022 schedule

2019 RBC Canadian Open

The PGA TOUR and European Tour today unveiled new details around their Strategic Alliance, with the PGA TOUR also releasing its 2021-22 PGA TOUR Season schedule.

The landmark agreement, announced in November 2020, further enhances and connects the ecosystem of men’s professional golf through a number of areas, including global scheduling, prize funds and playing opportunities for the respective memberships.

In terms of scheduling, the most significant piece of collaboration is the fact that three tournaments will be co-sanctioned in 2022 and therefore count on both the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup and the European Tour’s Race to Dubai next season: the Barbasol Championship; the Barracuda Championship; and the Genesis Scottish Open.

The latter event also has a new title sponsor in Genesis, the luxury automotive brand from South Korea, who will now title sponsor two tournaments on the PGA TOUR, with the Genesis Scottish Open joining The Genesis Invitational, which Genesis has titled since 2017; The Genesis Invitational will once again be played at The Riviera Country Club next year (February 14-20).

The Genesis Scottish Open (July 4-10), which is part of the European Tour’s Rolex Series, retains its place in golf’s global calendar the week ahead of The Open Championship (July 11-17), a date confirmed through to 2025. The player field will be a split between members of both Tours.

The tournament will also benefit from the continued commitment of the Scottish Government, managed by Visit Scotland – the agreement also running through 2025.

“We are delighted to welcome Genesis as a title sponsor of a European Tour event for the first time,” said European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley. “Genesis has a strong history of sponsorship on the PGA TOUR through The Genesis Invitational, and their commitment to the Scottish Open will further enhance one of our premier events of the season.”

Although it will be on the PGA TOUR’s official schedule for the first time, the Genesis Scottish Open has a rich history on the European Tour, appearing in the Tour’s first two official seasons (1972 and 1973) and as part of the Tour’s International Schedule since 1986. It has also been part of the Rolex Series – the European Tour’s premium series of events – since the Series’ inception in 2017.

“Adding an existing, strong title sponsor in Genesis to our Strategic Alliance in the form of the Genesis Scottish Open – to be sanctioned by both Tours – is a significant step for the global game,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Coupled with their support of The Genesis Invitational at Riviera, we’re incredibly proud to forge a deeper relationship with this premier brand across the global game.”

Genesis will take over the title sponsorship of the event from abrdn, who are exploring ways for the decade-long partnership with the European Tour to continue moving forward. The venue for the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open will be confirmed at a later date.

“We are extremely excited to become title sponsor of the Scottish Open at this historic moment, as the PGA TOUR and European Tour announce details on their Strategic Alliance,” said Jay Chang, Global head of Genesis. “Genesis and golf share a culture centered on respect, mutual admiration and innovation. We will continue to strengthen our partnership with both Tours to deliver this spirit to golfers, communities and individuals around the world through successful tournaments.”

Paul Bush, Director of Events at VisitScotland, said, “We are thrilled the European Tour and PGA TOUR have identified the Genesis Scottish Open to further develop their Strategic Alliance, and there is no more fitting stage than Scotland, the Home of Golf, on which to embark on such a historic journey.”

In addition to the Genesis Scottish Open being co-sanctioned, there will also be access for 50 European Tour members to each of two PGA TOUR events in 2022 for the first time – the Barbasol Championship, which will be played concurrently with the Genesis Scottish Open, and the Barracuda Championship, which will be played alongside the following week’s 150 th  Open Championship at St. Andrews. Both events will be added to the Race to Dubai for European Tour members.

It was also confirmed today that as part of the Strategic Alliance and collaboration between the two Tours, the Irish Open will see a significant increase in prize money for its annual European Tour event – to $6 million, starting in 2022 – nearly double the amount on offer at Mount Juliet last month. In addition, the PGA TOUR will continue to work with the European Tour on commercial opportunities across the Tour.

“When we announced the Strategic Alliance at the end of last year, we said it was a landmark moment for global golf’s ecosystem that would benefit all members of both Tours,” said Pelley. “Today’s announcement underlines that promise, with further enhancements to the Genesis Scottish Open, a strengthening of the Irish Open for our members, and direct access for European Tour members to two PGA TOUR events.

“There has been considerable collaboration behind the scenes between our two Tours since November’s Alliance was unveiled, and we are delighted to share these initial developments, which demonstrate our commitment to working together for the betterment of our sport globally.  We will have more to announce in the coming months – this is most definitely just the beginning.”

“With today’s news, I am pleased to say that the PGA TOUR and the European Tour are both stronger than at any time in our history, as we are positioned to grow – together – over the next 10 years faster than we have at any point in our existence,” said Monahan. “We are committed to continuing to evolve and adapt, and with our ever-strengthening partnership with the European Tour, to take the global game to the heights we all know it is capable of.”

PGA TOUR Schedule Highlights

The 2021-22 PGA TOUR Schedule includes several significant enhancements and features a total of 48 official events – 45 during the FedExCup Regular Season along with three 2022 FedExCup Playoffs events.

The 2022 portion of the schedule will kick off the PGA TOUR’s new, nine-year domestic media rights agreements with ViacomCBS, Comcast/NBC and ESPN. As part of the agreement, all three 2022 FedExCup Playoffs events will be broadcast domestically on NBC network television, beginning a rotation that continues with CBS hosting all three events in 2023.

Headline news includes the change in location and venue for the kickoff of the FedExCup Playoffs to TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, starting in 2022, replacing the Regular Season event that has been held in Memphis since 1958. FedEx will serve as the title sponsor of the event, to be known as the FedEx St. Jude Championship (August 8-14), replacing existing title sponsor Northern Trust after this year’s playing of THE NORTHERN TRUST at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey.

“FedEx is excited that the first event of the 2022 FedExCup Playoffs will be hosted in our hometown of Memphis, Tennessee,” said Raj Subramaniam, President and Chief Operating Officer of FedEx Corporation. “We are proud of our history and the community impact we’ve had since becoming title sponsor of our hometown TOUR stop in 1986. We look forward to the impact it will bring to our local community and will continue to use it as a platform to showcase the groundbreaking work being done by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to golf fans around the world.”

“Since the inception of the FedExCup in 2007, we have made a number of changes to enhance the quality of the FedExCup Playoffs for our players, fans and partners,” said Monahan. “Thanks to the continued support from FedEx as the TOUR’s umbrella partner, we’re proud to bring the start of the FedExCup to Memphis and a course loved by our players. Not only will it be a great test worthy of Playoff golf, but we also anticipate tremendous enthusiasm from a community that has steadfastly supported the PGA TOUR for more than 60 years. And, of course, the important work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will continue to be front and center.

“In totality, the 2021-22 PGA TOUR Schedule, combined with the momentum we have with our now-entrenched partnership with the European Tour, puts the PGA TOUR in a position of strength within professional golf like never before. We’re confident this schedule will give the world’s best players the opportunity to do what they do best – inspire and entertain our fans around the globe while helping our tournaments make a significant impact in their respective communities.”

The 2022 FedExCup Playoffs will continue to include the BMW Championship (August 15-21), which rotates next year to Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware, and the FedExCup Playoffs finale, the TOUR Championship (August 22-28), once again slated for East Lake Golf Club.

The PGA TOUR’s flagship event, THE PLAYERS Championship (March 7-13), will anchor a true Florida Swing in 2022, which features four consecutive events through The Sunshine State in the spring, including the Valspar Championship, which was played in April/May this past year. THE PLAYERS will be in year three of its March date and as a kickoff to the Season of Championships, with Justin Thomas returning as defending champion.

The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday (May 30-June 5) enters the first year of a 10-year agreement in 2022 with new presenting sponsor, Workday. Founded in 1976 by golf legend Jack Nicklaus and held annually at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, the tournament partners for the first time with three-time NBA champion and two-time MVP Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, and Ayesha Curry, an entrepreneur, host and  New York Times  bestselling author.

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the RBC Canadian Open (June 6-12) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, returns to the schedule in 2022 at St. George’s Golf and Country Club. Rory McIlroy won the last RBC Canadian Open, played in 2019.

Other notable items and changes to the 2021-22 PGA TOUR Schedule include (in chronological order):

  • As previously announced, the Fortinet Championship (September 13-19), with new title sponsor Fortinet, kicks off the 2021-22 FedExCup Regular Season at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.
  • The Ryder Cup will be played the week following the Fortinet Championship, with nine official events played during the balance of 2021 for a total of 10 events to be played in the fall.
  • The reconfigured Asia Swing will begin with THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT (October 11-17), which moves to the United States for the second year in a row and will be staged at The Summit Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, delivering back-to-back weeks of PGA TOUR golf in Las Vegas, as the Shriners Children’s Open will be contested October 4-10.
  • Following THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT will be the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP and World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, with additional details to be available in the near future.
  • As previously announced, World Wide Technology embarks on its first year of title sponsorship of the TOUR’s original event in Mexico, the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba (November 1-7).
  • The Sentry Tournament of Champions – a PGA TOUR winners-only event – leads off the 2022 calendar year (January 3-9).
  • The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (January 31-February 6) and the Waste Management Phoenix Open (February 7-13) trade spots in the schedule, as the TOUR’s event at TPC Scottsdale remains in its traditional date of Super Bowl week.
  • The Puerto Rico Open (February 28-March 6) will be played as an additional event alongside the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.
  • The Corales Puntacana Championship (March 21-27), in its first year under an extended term, will be played as an additional event alongside the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play.
  • The Mexico Championship (April 25-May 1) returns to the calendar as a PGA TOUR co-sponsored event, no longer under the World Golf Championships umbrella. With the field of 132 players, there is an anticipation of additional Mexican golfers in the field to help in inspire and grow the game in one of golf’s key emerging markets.
  • With the biennial Presidents Cup being held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte in 2022, the Wells Fargo Championship (May 2-8) will be contested for one year at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac, Maryland.
  • The John Deere Classic (June 27-July 3), traditionally played the week prior to The Open Championship, moves one week earlier.
  • Following The Open Championship, the 3M Open (July 18-24), Rocket Mortgage Classic (July 25-31) and Wyndham Championship (August 1-7) close out the FedExCup Regular Season.

The European Tour will announce the initial portion of its 2022 schedule later this month, with the full season announcement to follow in due course.

England's Kim, 16, youngest to make PGA Tour cut in 11 years

Kris Kim , a 16-year-old English amateur playing on a sponsor exemption at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, became the youngest player in 11 years to make the cut in a PGA Tour event.

Kim finished his second round Friday with a birdie for a 4-under 67. At 7-under 135, he was among 66 players who made the cut, which was 6 under. Jake Knapp was the leader at 14-under 128.

Guan Tianlang was 14 when he made the cut at both the Masters and Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2013, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

At 16 years, 7 months old, Kim is the fifth-youngest player ever to make a PGA Tour cut, according to the Tour. His feat also comes just two weeks after Miles Russell, 15, became the youngest to make the cut in the 35-year history of the Korn Ferry Tour.

Kim, who is the son of former LPGA Tour player and South Korea native Ji-Hyun Suh, is making his PGA Tour debut. He is the first amateur sponsored by South Korean company CJ Group, which is the title sponsor of the Nelson for the first time.

"I'm happy," Kim said. "I can't wait to get started again tomorrow. I've enjoyed it so much the last couple days, and being here two more days makes it so much sweeter."

A first-time Tour winner earlier this year, Knapp enters the weekend with sole possession of the lead after a second consecutive 7-under 64 in McKinney, Texas. He was a stroke ahead of Troy Merritt (62) and first-round leader Matt Wallace (66) and 2 ahead of Kelly Kraft (66).

"Even when I was doing any of that stuff, I always knew this was what I wanted to do and felt like it's where I should be. Just wasn't there yet," said Knapp, just more than two years removed from working security at a restaurant in his hometown that was also a late-night hotspot. "Just kept working away and sticking at it."

Merritt closed his season-low round with an eagle at the 531-yard ninth hole, where he hit his approach to 16 feet and made the putt. He had birdied four of the previous six holes.

Wallace finished on the same par 5 later in the day and saved par after driving into a native area and then chunking a shot from there to under a bridge.

Hometown favorite Jordan Spieth , the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 20, shot a 70 to finish at 4-under 138 and miss the cut by 2 strokes. On the 16th, his wayward drive ricocheted off the elbow of a male spectator back into the fairway. Spieth still bogeyed the hole then parred his last two.

Defending champion Jason Day closed his round with a 35-foot par putt for a 70 and was just on the cut line at 6-under 136.

Knapp's only bogey through the first two rounds was on his 12th hole Friday, the dogleg No. 3, where his drive went into the left rough. But he birdied four of his last six holes, that stretch starting with a 32-foot putt at the par-3, 192-yard fourth hole.

"Obviously, a putt you're not trying to make," he said. "Hit it a little bit harder than I would've liked and luckily it was on a good line and went in."

Knapp, who turns 30 on May 31, lost his card on the developmental Korn Ferry Tour before taking the part-time job in the fall of 2021 at the place in Costa Mesa, California, where for nearly nine months he worked Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights -- often until 2 or 3 a.m. The former UCLA player would practice and go to the gym in between his work shifts.

He got his third win on PGA Tour Canada in August 2022 and last year earned his PGA Tour card by finishing the season 13th on the Korn Ferry Tour. He won the Mexico Open in his fifth start this season, and his ninth overall, including two as an amateur in 2015.

His PGA Tour biography also touts that he can solve a Rubik's Cube, loves to work out and would pursue a career in the fitness industry if he weren't playing golf.

"Yeah, few interesting ones about me," Knapp said. "I do my best to, I'm kind of a golf-only guy. Just play a lot of golf and practice a lot. That's been my focus for the last four, five years."

At TPC Craig Ranch north of Dallas, Knapp hit 16 of 18 greens each of the first two rounds. He had the same number of putts (28) both days, though the combined distance of those shots on the greens went from 75 feet on Thursday to 139 feet on Friday.

"For the most part hitting it pretty solid and keeping in the right areas. Made it relatively easy on myself." Knapp said. "Early on in the year felt like I was putting well, and for the last month or so the stroke felt the same and ball wasn't going in the hole. ... Nice to see a few more going in."

Merritt opened his round with consecutive birdies before a three-putt bogey at No. 12, though he got that stroke right back with a 52-foot chip-in at No. 13. He made only his second cut in his past six tournaments, finishing 67th in the other one.

"It's fantastic, especially when you hit the ball solid and making a lot putts," said Merritt, who is in his 331st PGA Tour event and last won in 2018. "You're not accidentally there. You've actually played well to get there. I haven't done that. I've accidently backdoored a couple top-10s last fall."

Doug Barron's major mantel is barren no more after win at Regions Tradition

Change Text Size

Sunday at the Regions Tradition, everywhere that Doug Barron looked he was surrounded by firepower. For starters, playing in the final group on Sunday for the first time in a PGA TOUR Champions event – a major championship, no less – he was alongside Hall of Famers Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington. Legends. As they will tell you in Alabama, that’s tall cotton.

Steve Stricker, who won three senior majors a year ago and was runner-up in a fourth on his way to 2023 Player of the Year honors, and a three-time champion at Regions, was in the group up ahead of Barron, very capable of going low. Steven Alker, leader in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup, was, in fact, going low, shooting the best round of the week (9-under 63).

And even Bernhard Langer, the all-time leader in victories (46) among the over-50 set, was making some noise for the first time since tearing his Achilles tendon. He would tie for eighth.

If you think any of this phased Doug Barron, it did not. Never a winner on the PGA TOUR (238 career starts) and last a winner among the seniors in 2021 (Rogers Charity Classic in Canada), the 54-year-old Barron never once blinked, never broke stride, smiling and chatting away as he played, showing he was more than comfortable among the company that he was keeping.

Doug Barron throws a dart to set up birdie at Tradition

His final-round 4-under 68 was relatively stress-free, with few mistakes in it, and as a result, this morning, at last, he can call himself a major champion. His winning total was 17-under 271, two shots clear of Alker.

Barron played bogey-free golf over his final 33 holes at Greystone Golf and Country Club’s Founders Course, and even his final-round score did not do full justice to capture just how solidly he played among giants. His putting was steady, and he holed out well from 3 and 4 feet, not making a single bogey one day after his stellar third-round 66 was three shots clear of the day’s next-lowest score. Nobody handed this one to Barron.

“Got my putter going,” Barron said. “I felt like I can make an 8-footer again, and it was huge. Today was just a dream come true. To beat all these great players ... they’re world-class players, but they are even better people.”

Alker, 52, has been a winner in eight of his first 60 starts on PGA TOUR Champions, and Sunday in Hoover, the New Zealander was the one who would step forward and at least post a number that got Barron’s attention. Alker eagled the par-5 second hole and would add eight birdies to his card, offset by a lone bogey at the par-5 15th. Alker’s 63 tied the best round since the tourney moved to Greystone, and jumped him all the way into second for the week.

Stricker, 57, was attempting to become the ninth player in history to win the same PGA TOUR Champions major for a third consecutive time. He has an incredible record at Regions, where he won in 2019, 2022 and 2023 – each time winning by six shots. But Stricker never got much going with the putter on the weekend to make a quality run. He did not make a single birdie on Saturday, though on Sunday he bounced back with a few, shooting 69.

Els, a winner of four majors (two U.S. Opens, two Open Championships) in his PGA Tour days, appeared poised to collect his first senior major on Sunday. He started the day sharing the lead with Barron, had been swinging the club beautifully, and through hard work, has his putting in good order. But after a nice start (birdie at the second), he followed with poor bogeys at No. 3 and No. 4, the latter a short par-3 that was a good scoring opportunity.

Els did make birdies at the eighth and ninth to get back to within two, and with three par-5 awaiting the long hitter on the back nine, he had a chance. But he could not get much else going. A bogey at 10 halted his momentum, and he shot 71 and tied for third with Stricker and Stewart Cink. The finish was Els’ ninth top-five without a victory in a senior major.

Cink is a newcomer to the big senior stops, and has yet to win on PGA TOUR Champions, but Sunday he broke out to a sizzling start, shooting 5-under 31 on his opening nine. He finished with a final-round 66, but it included only one birdie in his last 10 holes as he could not close the gap on Barron.

For Barron, Sunday was an emotional day, for several reasons. He had friends and family there, including his sister, it was Mother’s Day, and he said he hung in there over his last 18 holes without his best stuff. When he needed to, though, he hit the shots. He had three putts to win on the final green, but lagged his first putt to a foot to seal his major.

Doug Barron taps in for par to win Regions Tradition

“I hit a lot of good shots coming down the stretch, I thought,” Barron said. “I thought my putter ... if I just hit it to 30 or 40 feet, I could win it. I did look at the scoreboard at 16. I was excited about my play, and I’m just excited to keep it going.

“When I came out here (on PGA TOUR Champions), I dreamed of winning majors. I was never a factor in a major on the PGA TOUR, so it really is a dream come true.”

Barron moved from 20th to fifth in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, with Alker maintaining his lead in the season-long points race.

The Regions Tradition, played for the eighth consecutive year at Greystone, marked the first major championship of the season on PGA TOUR Champions, with four more to come. After a week off, major season resumes with the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Stricker is the defending PGA Senior champion, having outlasted Harrington in a playoff a year ago at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco in Texas.
