Peter Gabriel Expands Upcoming Fall North American Tour

Peter Gabriel has announced 13 additional tour dates to his North American run in September and October. The musician, who recently shared another new song, “Playing For Time,” from his extremely long-awaited new album, i/o , will now hit cities like Cleveland, Dallas, and Denver.

Gabriel still hasn’t shared an official release date for i/o , which will be his first album of all new material since 2002’s Up (more recent releases, like Scratch My Back and New Blood , have featured cover songs and new orchestral versions of his own material). Despite that lack of a release date, however, Gabriel’s scheduled a full-fledged tour in support of i/o , starting with a European run in May.

“Playing for Time (Dark-Side Mix)” is a sweeping ballad that finds Gabriel, as he put it in a statement, meditating on “time, mortality and memories and the idea that each of us has a planet full of memories, which get stashed inside the brain.” The song features Tom Cawley on piano, while Ed Shearmur handled the orchestral arrangement, recording those parts with several players featured in Gabriel’s New Blood Orchestra.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Like Gabriel’s last two i/o releases — “Panopticon” and “The Court” — “Playing for Time” was released to coincide with the full moon. And also like those last two releases, Gabriel will release a couple of different mixes of “Playing for Time” later this month: The “Dark-Side” mix out today was handled by Tchad Blake, while Mark “Spike” Stent and Hans-Martin Buff helmed the “Bright-Side Mix” and “Atmos In-Side Mix,” respectively.

Of the new single, was written and produced by Gabriel, recorded at his Real World Studios in Wiltshire and The Beehive in London, and features Tom Cawley on piano. The orchestral arrangement, by Ed Shearmur, was recorded at British Grove Studios in London with a number of players who previously featured in the New Blood Orchestra.   ” ‘Playing For Time’ is a song that I have been working on for a long time and have performed live, without lyrics, so some people may be familiar with it. It’s been an important song for me. It’s about time, mortality and memories and the idea that each of us has a planet full of memories which get stashed inside the brain.   It is more of a personal song about how you assemble memories and whether we are prisoners of time or whether that is something that can actually free us. I do think it’s good to push yourself towards more bold or interesting experiences because then you will have richer memories to feed you when you get to my age. You also get taught by every meaningful experience that you go through.”

Peter Gabriel urges crowd to 'live and let live' during artistic new tour

peter gabriel tour musicians

WASHINGTON – With a tip of his cap and a bow, Peter Gabriel emerged on stage to address the crowd.

He started his chat about time, which “has every single one of us in its claws,” moved on to imagination, which “helps us escape,” and grimly joked about artificial intelligence and the increasing difficulty in “telling the real from the fake.”

This professorial approach would blend with extraordinary multimedia and artsy production, stellar musicianship and the live presentation of nearly every song on his long-awaited “I/O” album – and most of his hits – for three hours (including a 15-minute set break).

Gabriel’s tour, which rolled into Capital One Arena Wednesday, kicked off in Europe in May before starting a 20-show stateside run last week that lasts through mid-October. It’s a rare outing for the 73-year-old creator, who toured with Sting in 2016 and last hit the road solo more than a decade ago.

His songs: Sting takes fans on a journey of his career with a hits-filled show

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

'Sledgehammer'? Yes, but also lots of new songs

The quiet opening of this scholastic adventure found him sitting, campfire-style, under the massive visage of a moon with “the king of the bottom end,” bassist Tony Levin , renowned for his work in King Crimson as well as his 47-year partnership with Gabriel.

With Gabriel cradling a keyboard on his lap, the pair edged into 1992’s lullaby “Washing of the Water” before the rest of Gabriel’s multicultural band, highlighted by longtimers drummer Manu Katché and guitarist David Rhodes, joined them for “Growing Up” with its lovely layers of string and percussion.

Gabriel, the original lead singer of Genesis who departed the band in 1975 to forge a hugely successful solo career that indulged his interests in world beat and politics, also became an unlikely MTV star along the way.

That guy makes a few appearances on this tour, though the intellectual Gabriel can’t possibly view “Sledgehammer” and “Big Time” as more than obligatory inclusions in a set so heavily dedicated to songs he’s been perfecting for decades (his last album, “Up,” arrived in 2002). However, he sold both with verve and visuals as captivating as their lauded videos, delighting the crowd that, after hearing much new material, just wanted to get up and dance.

No Kate Bush, but a masterful duet nonetheless

The only quibble with Gabriel’s show – which might have slotted more comfortably in a theater setting except for the massive, spaceship-like lighting panel and other visual accouterments that require arena space – was its jagged pacing.

While Gabriel has released one new song from “I/O” on the date of the full moon each month since January, most in the audience didn’t seem familiar with the material. The singing guitar riff and chugging beat of “Panopticom” and the brisk title track with its piano backdrop and bursting chorus are invigorating additions to Gabriel’s catalog.

But it took the muscular backbeat, spiky trumpet bleats from Josh Shpak and Gabriel’s deliberate side-hopping on the chorus of 1992’s “Digging in the Dirt” – “this time you’ve gone too far” - to incite the masses.

The beautiful piano-based ballads “Playing for Time” and, later in the set, “And Still,” a dedication to Gabriel’s deceased mother, are artistic requiems but they fit awkwardly in proximity to a crackling rendition of “Sledgehammer” and an ethereal “Red Rain.”

But whether on new material or classics, Gabriel’s voice has retained its distinctive timbre, both dusky and capable of projecting deep hurt or tenderness, the latter of which unfolded during a show highlight.

Mournful bass from Levin opened “Don’t Give Up,” a song still so pretty, so melancholy, so important . The stunning cellist/vocalist Ayanna Witter-Johnson subbed for Kate Bush’s original vocals during the moving duet, as she and Gabriel climbed stairs atop the stage to exchange emotions.

Peter Gabriel says we need a more 'live and let live' mentality

Gabriel is a generous maestro, frequently namechecking band members, mentioning the artists whose visuals appeared on screen and during the encore that commenced with his percussive masterpiece of adoration , “In Your Eyes,” saluting his production crew.

He also strove to leave the crowd with some optimism, pairing the new hand-swaying “Live and Let Live” (“That’s what we need a bit more of right now,” he said at the start of the song) with the sunny blast of nostalgia, jaunty guitar and "boom boom boom" heartbeat of his first solo hit, “Solsbury Hill.”

Gabriel has always been unapologetic in his artistic quests and that hasn’t diminished with age. More than 50 years into a career, he’s earned that right.

Peter Gabriel Concert Review: Music, Story-Telling, Visuals & More

peter gabriel tour musicians

Peter Gabriel (r) with Tony Levin, on the tour’s opening night, May 18, 2023

On the rise of each month’s full moon, since January of this year, Peter Gabriel has released a song from i/o , his first album of all new songs since 2002. On October 8, 2023, at the Client Pledge Arena, his Seattle-area fans were treated to live performances of 11 of those songs. Gabriel has always challenged his audience to explore his new music but 11 new songs is a lot to ask. Turns out that it wasn’t, however, as these tunes are woven into Gabriel ’ s rich catalog of work like a warm blanket.

Hanging over the stage is a giant clock with a silhouetted crew member erasing the big hand and immediately redrawing it one minute closer to showtime. At 8:00 p.m., Gabriel, wearing a flat cap and double-breasted brocade jacket, walks onto the stage alone. Referencing the clock, he talks of time being “the big boss” that “has us all in its claws.” He jokes to the audience that maybe they are seeing an avatar of himself that happens to be 20 years older and 20 kilograms heavier than the real Peter Gabriel, who is far away soaking up the sun on some exotic beach with the body of a Greek god. It’s a good laugh before he talks through the heavy themes that will be visited during the night’s performance: the hands of time and mortality, the universe and the origins of life on earth, human connectivity to everything living and dead, the existential threat and vaunted promise of artificial intelligence.

Gabriel segues softly from cosmic ideas to music as his long-time cully, bassist Tony Levin, joins him center stage to sit around the warm glow of a campfire. They kick off the night with an earthy version of “Washing of the Water.” The other band members join them, forming an intimate campfire circle as the song builds to a rousing unplugged crescendo. Sitting among this circle of talented musicians, Gabriel respectfully introduces each. There are the guys who have been by his side on tour and on albums for 40-plus years: Levin on bass, David Rhodes on guitars, Manu Katché on drums, and Richard Evans on guitar and flute. And there are the masterful newcomers: Ayanna Witter-Johnson (cello, piano, vocals), Marina Moore (violin, viola, vocals), Don E (keyboards) and Josh Shpak (trumpet, French horn, keys, vocals). The band launches into an intimate version of “Growing Up” from, Up, before moving from the campfire to the spacious three-tiered set that allowed the audience a good view of each of the nine musicians.

The first of the new songs, “Panopticon,” is preceded with a talk about the potential perils of Artificial Intelligence and the aspiration that, perhaps, the technology will be used in the best ways imaginable: advanced communication, universal education, worldwide healthcare for all, and a panoptic data stream that keeps an eye out for the evildoers. “Panopticon” is classic Peter Gabriel with a lilting melody and a buoyant chorus that showcases the driving power of veteran band members Levin, Rhodes and Katché.

Pulsing with a temperate trip-hop beat, “Four Kinds of Horses” is cinematic and dreamy, accentuated by Moore on violin in a duel with Shpak on trumpet. Another talk introduces the song, “I/O,” as Gabriel further explains his belief that everything, living and dead, shares a connection. I/O, he tells us, stands for Input/Output. It’s an easy-flowing and deeply personal song as Gabriel sings, “I’ll be laid to rest in a proper place, in the roots of an old oak tree, where life can move freely in and out of me.”

The new songs continue. “Playing for Time” is an instant classic with a sumptuous melody of piano and strings. The talks continue. Gabriel explains that “Olive Tree” is a song that alludes to mind reading and informs us of an up and coming MRI technology that translates brainwaves to video via an A/I algorithm. Gabriel’s story-telling is engaging and the concert begins to feel like a mash-up of Performance Art and a Ted Talk. Another new song, “This is Home,” is a warm and loving ode to family with a Motown-ish groove.

The finale of the first half is Gabriel’s biggest hit, “Sledgehammer.” In the wake of a set of adventurous new music and scientific revelations, it’s a jolt back to 1986, when Peter Gabriel was the biggest pop star on the planet. “Sledgehammer,” ironically, replaced “Invisible Touch” by Genesis, the band  in which Gabriel established himself, as the #1 song on the B illboard Hot 100 and went on to win nine MTV Music Video Awards. That’s a record that still stands today. With the conspicuous first blast of the trumpet, the audience jumps to its feet as Gabriel dances across the stage, playfully leading the audience to sing along to every sexual double entendre.

Watch “Sledgehammer” from the Boston show in September 2023

The second half opens with the industrial grind of “Darkness.” It’s a jarring start as nothing in the first set was as aggro as this. Appearing from behind a scrim, a parade of shadowy images of Gabriel warns of a dark side: “I’m afraid I can be devil-man, and I’m scared to be divine, don’t mess with me, my fuse is short.” ˆ That mood changes quickly as Gabriel segues to “Love Can Heal,” a gorgeous soundscape of synths and strings that debuted in 2016 while Gabriel was on tour with Sting.

Gabriel shuffles back and forth across the stage singing “Road To Joy,” a song that recalls the funk rock rhythm of “Big Time,” courtesy of keyboardist Don E playing a Keytar and Levin on his emblematic Chapman Stick bass.

The magnificent cellist, pianist and singer Ayanna Witter-Johnson has her moment to shine on “Don’t Give Up.” As Gabriel sings of the despair of a fallen man, Witter-Johnson answers back with hope, love and empathy in the duet originally made famous by Kate Bush.

Three more new songs are introduced in the second set. “The Court” speaks to the abuses of the justice system as Gabriel’s impressionistic verses give way to a definitive refrain: “And the court will rise, while the pillars all fall.” Two songs that have yet to be released are “ Live and Let Live,” a nod to the principles of Nelson Mandela set to a tune of celebration, and “And Still,” an ode to Gabriel’s mother.

Watch “Live and Let Live” as performed in Toronto

With a reference to climate change, Gabriel introduces “Red Rain,” quipping, “It seems every year the weather is getting stranger.” The fan favorite finds the band at the acme of perfection with layers of trumpet, cello, violin and keyboard fills accentuating the percussive heavy track. In an acknowledgement of his contribution, Gabriel credits Katché as the “explosive engine” of the band.

Pointing to the giant clock appearing again over the stage, Gabriel poses the question and answer, “Do you know what time it is?…it’s Big Time,” offering another opportunity to revisit the dance-rock that launched Gabriel into, well, the big time.

Watch Gabriel, live in Dublin in June 2023

Gabriel closes the show with “Solsbury Hill,” his first single after leaving Genesis and, arguably, the most defining song of his career. It is a glorious slice of pop perfection that stomps along to a 7/4 time signature and blushes with jangly guitars. As he skips joyfully across the stage, one wonders if Gabriel still gets the same heart-racing feeling that he had all those years ago when he sings about the revelation that letting go of Genesis was a risk that he had to take.

Watch “Solsbury Hill” from Madison Square Garden on the I/O tour

Before leaving the stage, Gabriel, born Feb. 13, 1950, re-introduces the band for the third, or maybe fourth, time. When they return for the encores he takes a minute to acknowledge the crew as cameras catch each of them at their posts for the audience to see. Throughout the night he has also acknowledged the individual visual artists who created the films that accompany each of the new songs. This is a man who truly appreciates and respects as equals all of the talent that surrounds him.

The first encore is “In Your Eyes.” Having some fun, Gabriel holds the mic to Levin so he can sing “in your eyes” in a very deep basso. Katché kicks in with world beat percussion while Gabriel, Levin and Rhodes do a few simple dance steps that the entire band soon joins in on. The song comes to a pique when Witter-Johnson joins Gabriel at center stage to sing the parts originally recorded by Youssou N’Dour.

The band leaves the stage again but returns to answer the audience’s call for “Biko,” the anti-apartheid anthem that established Gabriel as a human rights activist and generated a monumental impact in the apartheid resistance movement. Telling the story of Steve Biko’s death in the manner of a news reporter, Gabriel quickly has the audience singing the chorus, “Biko, Biko, Because Biko, oh Biko,” and then leads them in a chant with protest fists lifted high. “What happens now is up to you,” he says, leaving the audience to finish the song while each band member follows Gabriel off-stage, one by one, until only Katché’s tom-tom beat remains. It is a solace ending to an enlightened evening of music, story-telling, visual art and the very welcome return of Peter Gabriel.

Tonight, Thursday 18 May sees the first date of the UK and European leg of i/o The Tour , at the TAURON Arena in Kraków, Poland.

There’s always a trade-off. People generally want to hear what they know and the artist generally wants to play the new stuff. So, I think there’s a sort of barter thing where you have to suffer enough new numbers to get to hear the old ones. It’s always been a bit like that with me, but I think this is a strong batch of songs. They’re not all up-tempo, but I feel they’re certainly being played with a lot of heart.

In this video, Peter introduces the band that will join him on-stage for the tour.

We have two string players, the amazing cello player Ayanna Witter-Johnson, who’s also playing the keyboard and singing beautifully. Marina Moore on violin and viola, a great player and she’s also singing with us. Richard Evans is back. He’s been working with me for many years on and off for different situations, more in the studio probably than on the road, though he was in the band for the Growing Up tour. We have Josh Shpak, who’s a brilliant trumpeter. He’s also ended up on the i/o record. Oli Jacobs, who was engineering, was visiting an old flatmate and heard him rehearsing next door and said, “this guy’s amazing.” And sure enough, we sent him some stuff and he did some beautiful playing. And it’s great to have him out here with us as well. When I was working with Brian Eno, who has done some wonderful work on the i/o record, I was trying to play a funky keyboard part and he said, “Peter, the man you want is Don E.” And it was on the track Road to Joy, which hasn’t yet come out. But he got Don in and he was fantastic. Lovely to work with. Then we found out that he does all sorts of other things too as he grew up in a sort of gospel household where you just had to play all the instruments, sing, percussion, all sorts! So, I thought that would be a nice inclusion on the keyboards as well. Then Manu Katché, we have back on drums, he’s just brilliant. David Rhodes and Tony Levin have been with me such a long time and have been such a regular part of my band. So that’s what makes it fun, extraordinary musicians with a really wide range of experience and talents.
