Pench National Park Trip Planning

Basic Information about the Pench National Park

Where is pench national park pench national park is located in which state.

Pench National Park is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, close to the Maharashtra border. It is a part of the Seoni district and lies in the southern region of the Satpura hill range.

Honest confession: Until very recently, I used to think that Pench is in Maharashtra. But you could simply blame it on its proximity to Nagpur. And that brings me to my next piece of key information.

How to reach Pench National Park?

Nagpur is the closest major city to Pench National Park. Distance from Nagpur to Pench National Park is approximately 80 kilometres. Most major towns and cities in India are connected to Nagpur by air or train.

Travelling from Nagpur to Pench National Park is pretty straightforward. You can easily get a bus or a private car from Nagpur train station or Nagpur airport to go to Pench.

Most tour operators that offer Pench Safari package provide ex Nagpur services and arrange a pick-up and drop for you from Nagpur railway station or airport.

How many days do you need in Pench?

If you want to head out on the recommended minimum of 4 safaris while in Pench, you must stay in Pench for at least 3 nights and 4 days.

Who should visit Pench? What facilities are available at Pench?

Pench is a great travel destination for wildlife lovers as well as nature lovers. A trip to Pench provides a much-needed break to corporate employees, hardworking professionals, stressed students or overworked parents. It transports you right into the heart of a dense natural jungle where the selfish laws of the concrete jungle have no room.

Thus, essentially, Pench is a great tourist destination for all types of travellers. You can even take your babies and kids along with you if you are confident of preparing them well for the trip. Screaming and shouting can attract danger and disturb the wildlife.

The Pench National Park jeep safari takes you through rough forest roads and is usually not a comfortable journey. Hence pregnant women and those with a severe health condition should avoid visiting Pench. If you have back problems, you should carry enough back support to avoid aggravating your pain.

The facilities available inside the Pench National Park vary greatly based on which state you are in. The part of the Pench Tiger Reserve that lies in Madhya Pradesh is extremely well-maintained. There are plenty of clean toilets inside the designated waiting area of the jungle.

The forest staff takes abundant care to ensure strict compliance with the forest laws. This guarantees a blissful forest experience to the tourists that visit Pench Tiger Reserve.

However, the same can’t be said about the Pench national park area that lies inside Maharashtra. There are fewer toilets on the Maharashtra side, and hardly any are properly maintained. The jungle, too, does not feel as properly looked after as the one in Madhya Pradesh.

What is the best time to visit Pench National Park?

If you plan to visit Pench to see animals, particularly tigers, then the best time to visit Pench is during summer, i.e. between March and May, as animals often visit water bodies to drink water. However, if you want to enjoy pleasant weather, a cool breeze while observing nature and animal life inside the jungle, visiting Pench during the winter, i.e. between November and February, would be ideal.

In case you are planning to visit Pench during summer, please note that the temperatures can soar beyond 40°C, and you must carry enough fluids with you to stay hydrated. Wearing a cap is also non-negotiable.

How much does it cost to visit Pench National Park?

A visit to the Pench National Park will cost around INR 10,000-12,000 per person for 3 nights 4 days, assuming you book four safaris in the core area and stay in a good resort. The Pench national park safari price is approximately INR 1500 per person (inclusive of guide and vehicle charges), and accommodation (inclusive of all meals) in a good resort should cost you around INR 4,000 per night.

How to book a safari at Pench National Park?

Tiger spotted inside the Pench Tiger Reserve

A safari at the tiger reserve can be booked on the official website of the Forest Department of Madhya Pradesh. The process of Pench tiger reserve booking on this website is as follows:

  • Register yourself. Validate mobile number and email by OTPs.
  • Add your bank account details
  • Head to the ‘book safari’ section.
  • Select whether you want to book ‘full vehicle’ or ‘single seat’. Select the desired date and hit the search button.
  • Now you will see a screen with the number of available permits per gate and session displayed on the screen.
  • Select the desired gate and session and submit.
  • Now a tourist information page will open up where you will need to insert the details of all the tourists.

Important Tip: Make sure you do not make any errors in this form. The ID Type that you select here must be carried along with you at the time of safari. You will be denied entry if you do not carry the original ID proof or if there is any mismatch in the details entered at the time of booking and those specified on your ID proof.

Save the permit confirmation copy and carry it along with you at all times.

Repeat the Pench National Park online booking process for each safari that you intend to book.

Similarly, if you wish to book safaris from a gate to the Pench Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, you can visit the official Maharashtra Eco Tourism website and follow a process similar to the one specified above.

Now, if you find the interface confusing or need more guidance on Pench National Park safari bookings, you can book safaris through an agent and book a hotel on your own. Alternatively, you can book the hotel and ask the hotel to help you book safaris. Booking through an agent or hotel will involve paying additional charges.

It is best to book a Pench tiger safari yourself from the official MP forest government website. If you change your mind about the date, time or gate, you can also cancel the permit (i.e. safari booking) and rebook.

It is most important to note that only limited permits are issued per session, and hence booking the safaris about 30-40 days in advance is recommended. A facility to book Tatkal (last-minute) tickets is available on the website. But the chances of getting a permit are extremely low.

In addition to this, here are some more insightful tips on Pench National Park safari booking:

1. Safaris are undertaken in two sessions: morning and evening. Morning safaris tend to be for a longer period of time. Evening safari ride ends at sunset and hence is usually shorter, especially during winters.

2. Never book a permit that is not confirmed, i.e. one that is waitlisted. Waitlisted bookings rarely get confirmed.

3. Tatkal or last-minute booking is also available on the website. This booking is only available 1-2 sessions in advance, and the chances of getting a confirmed booking are slim. Do not rely on this booking method.

4. There is a limit on the number of permits issued per day. It is best to book your permits 30-40 days in advance to avoid disappointment.

5. The permit fee payable online does not include vehicle and guide charges. The rates (December 2021) for vehicles and guides are displayed below. They need to be paid at the time of entering the gates.

pench national park safari charges

6. Safaris can get cancelled on account of climate conditions, conflicts in guide or driver unions, animals’ health, etc. It is best to be prepared for such disappointments.

General guidelines for visiting the Pench National Park

Jackal sighting while on Pench National Park Safari

1. Have all your main meals at the resort.

2. For safaris, pack light snacks. If you stay at a resort such as Tiger N Woods, the resort will pack a lovely picnic bag for you with snacks and a thermos.

3. Toilets are only available at designated halt areas. In the core areas of the jungle, there are absolutely no toilets. Make sure you limit your intake of fluids right before your safari. Visit a loo whenever you stop near one.

4. Tourists are absolutely prohibited from stepping outside the car while on the safari (except in designated areas) as it can prove to be extremely dangerous.

5. Avoid wearing bright colours. Stick to natural forest shades like green and brown.

6. Do not wear perfumes as the fragrance can attract wild animals.

7. Don’t forget to carry a cap or a hat and sunglasses.

8. In case you forget to carry water or other essentials, buy those at the entrance gate. Water bottles, jackets, binoculars and other safari essentials are sold at all the entrance gates of the tiger reserve.

9. Don’t travel only to see tigers. A safari offers a rare opportunity to observe many animals and birds in their natural habitat. You get a chance to learn about animal calls. You get to study the rules of the jungle. And above and beyond everything, you get to be a part of a world that’s completely raw and free of human intervention. Try to make the most of this experience instead of just focusing on tiger sightings!

Pench National Park: A safari guide’s tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

By Arundhati Ail

In the heart of India, the Pench river, a tributary of the Kanhan river, cuts Pench National Park almost perfectly in half. The woodlands of the park are rich with prey species and the watering holes created by the river draw out wild boars, jackals, deer, bison and gaur. And often, lurking in the bushes behind them is the star of the show, the Bengal tiger .

Scattered across the 758 sq km of the park in Madhya Pradesh , tigers are the park’s most powerful predators. The big cats are solitary and strong-willed creatures, willing to traverse long distances to stalk their prey. Sighting one is a quiet and slow game in Pench that requires you to be as inconspicuous as possible. Prabhir Patil—or “Pat”, as he is more commonly known—has perfected the art over decades in the wild. “One can truly understand animals in their natural habitat when they finally ignore your presence,” says the head naturalist and guide at luxury safari lodge Pench Jungle Camp.

Born and raised in Nagpur, Patil grew up visiting the forest every chance he could get. “When I came to Pench in 1997, there was no tar road to reach the Turia gate and not a single resort or lodge in Pench or Tadoba,” he says. “I would just take a bus to Mowgli gate in Tadoba or cycle up to the national park wall because I was so curious.” He would even volunteer with NGOs for census work in the forests, living with forest guards and patrolling the area on foot everyday. “Whenever the jungle would call me, I would go,” he says. Here, Patil draws from his 15 years of experience in guiding and birding to offer insider tips for your next trip to Pench National Park.

What makes Pench National Park special?

Pench used to be a sanctuary and became a national park in 1975. Given the number of tigers it houses, it was established as a tiger reserve in 1992. Though most focus on the part of Pench that lies in Madhya Pradesh, about 40% of the forest lies in Maharashtra . “Guides at Pench typically highlight that there are 33 tigers across about 758 sq km at Pench. I tell tourists there are at least 100 tigers and 100 leopards living in the whole forest area which spans 2,000 sq km across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Animals don’t see a separation between the two states, it’s all one forest,” says Patil.

Generations of tigers have inhabited the park for decades. The park is also famous for the Collarwali Tigress, who passed away in 2022 after giving birth to 29 cubs in eight litters through her lifetime. She was the first tiger in the park to be fitted with a radio collar, which enabled park officials to study her behaviour. Tiger sightings were rare at Pench before her. But she became the most sighted tigress at the park and would often come close to tourist vehicles. Collarwali Tigress caused a major surge in visitor numbers at Pench and was well-loved among wildlife enthusiasts.

What to spot at Pench National Park?

Tiger spotting

The Bengal Tiger is undoubtedly the star attraction at Pench. It’s been 22 years since Patil saw his first tiger but for him, every sighting remains just as special. “I’ve seen generations of tigers in this forest. But even now, every time I see a tiger, I feel lucky,” he says. “In 2005, when I was out on a safari, I saw a leopard in the distance chasing a spotted deer. The deer was running towards a group of four young tigers, who were the cubs of “badi mata” (the mother of the Collarwali Tigress). The tigers began running after the leopard, who climbed up a tree to save its life. In the end, the tigers had surrounded the tree and it was almost like they were challenging the leopard to come down and face them.” Of course, there are scarier sightings too. “Less than a month ago, I was out on a safari early in the morning with guests. We were the only jeep in the area and we heard some langur calls. The next moment, there was a tiger charging towards our vehicle. She came very close to our jeep and then just turned away and went back. The guests were shivering and they didn’t want to see any more wildlife after that,” says Patil. He highlights the need to stay calm in moments like these. This is the tigress’ way of asking you to keep away, he says, and it’s important to respect that.

Beyond the big cats, Pench is great for spotting wild dogs, the Indian gaur, leopards, cheetal, sambar, nilgai, jackals, bison, jungle cats, leopards, palm civets, black bears and more. The park is also home to a variety of birds, including peacocks, crow pheasant, peafowl, pintail, lesser whistling teal, Indian roller, wagtail, munia, waterfowl, blue kingfisher, crimson-breasted barbet and red-vented bulbul. “Even if you don’t see a lot of animals when you visit, you will always see birds at Pench,” says Patil.

For Patil, guiding a safari isn’t just about spotting a tiger. “Most people take the jeep out and drive everywhere looking for tigers. But I’m not a tiger spotter. I want to spot the diverse wildlife and flora of the forest, even smaller things like flowers, birds, spider webs. That’s my way of showing people how to see the forest,” he says. “I am usually the slowest driver in the forest and I stop the vehicle often. You have to listen to what the jungle is telling you. There might be an alarm call by a sambar deer, a spotted deer or a monkey. Peacocks sometimes give an alarm call, which means a predator bird or carnivorous animal may be around. I also listen for jungle babblers—I call them the police of the forest . They are always able to spot something fishy—an owl, snake or a jungle cat.”

What’s the best time to visit Pench National Park?

A langour

Winter, which lasts from November to February , is a great time to visit Pench. The weather at this time remains pleasant for wildlife sightings and nature walks. However, according to Patil, the best time to visit is between February and March. This is when winter is just starting to fade away and the scorching summer hasn’t quite set in. “At this time of year, the peacocks begin to spread their wings to attract the peahens—it’s breeding season for them—and the birds begin to chirp just a little bit louder. It feels like animals are in a good mood during this time,” says Patil. During summer, temperatures touch 40°C and the harsh weather makes sightseeing difficult for tourists. However, this is a great time for tiger sightings since dry weather brings thirsty tigers to water bodies more frequently.

How many safaris should you do during a three-night stay?

Increasing the frequency of safaris increases the likelihood of sighting tigers and other wildlife. Patil recommends at least two-three safaris—two in the morning and one in the afternoon, ideally—along with other local experiences. He also encourages guests to explore the Maharashtra side of Pench (at gates like Sillari and Khursapar), which offers distinct landscapes, flora and fauna as compared to the part of Pench that lies in Madhya Pradesh.

Morning and afternoon safaris offer the same wildlife viewing opportunities, but chances of spotting animals may differ. “The morning safari is the preferred option as it lasts up to five hours—as compared to the three-and-a-half-hour afternoon safari—making it an ideal choice for wildlife enthusiasts,” says Patil. Morning light also provides favourable conditions for photography.

How to book a safari permit at Pench and how much does it cost?

You will need to book a safari from the  government website to enter the park. Patil recommends booking a permit well in advance, especially if you plan on visiting the Turia gate, which is known for tiger sightings. Permits for Indians cost Rs2,450* for weekdays and Rs3,050* for weekends. The cost is usually double for foreign nationals. It’s best to plan your trip on weekdays, when the rush of tourists is significantly lesser. But do note that the Turia gate remains shut on Wednesdays. It’s best to book safari permits well in advance—45-60 days—to gain entry into preferred zones.

How to book a jeep and guide

If you have a valid safari permit, a jeep and guide will be assigned to you at the gate by the forest department. You can also pick a guide of your choice at an extra cost. Having a knowledgeable naturalist on your safaris can make all the difference. Look for someone with extensive knowledge of the forest and its wildlife and pay attention to their advice and directions.

A forest department jeep typically costs Rs3,000*, while a guide usually charges Rs600* per safari. If you are staying at a jungle lodge or wildlife resort, you can request them to arrange a guide and safari for you at an extra charge.

Pench is a smaller park as compared to Kanha or Bandhavgarh , and does not have a zone system. The park has three entry gates: Turia, Karmajhari and Jamtara. Turia Gate is considered to be the best for tiger spotting and is also the most popular among tourists. But there’s a lot more to explore at Pench beyond Turia. “It’s important to talk about different parts of the forest—the national park, the sanctuary, the buffer area—which spans 2000 sq ft—and the water bodies in between,” says Patil. “No one takes tourists to those areas because everyone only wants to spot the tiger.” Beyond the Turia gate, Patil also recommends exploring the Khawasa buffer area, the Khursapar gate, the Rukkhad gate or the Sillari gate in Maharashtra. Patil’s favourite area in the forest is Sitaghat. “It’s a really nice, secluded area where you won’t find a lot of jeeps. The landscape there is beautiful and great for birdwatching.”

Besides jeep safaris, what else can you do at Pench?

In the core forest area at Turia gate, jeep safaris are the only option. If you want to get off the vehicle and explore the forest on foot or on cycles, visit the buffer areas. If you’re interested, you can even opt for a night safari—check with your guide or hotel about timings and bookings—where you can spot tigers, bears and other nocturnal creatures. Beyond safaris, you can explore the local villages, cycle around the area or enjoy a sundowner picnic at Kohka lake—a picturesque reservoir great for birdwatching. There are also camps that offer curated activities around the lake.

Pench National Park is located within the Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh, a state renowned for its rich cultural heritage and natural wonders. This strategic location places the park at the crossroads of central India, making it easily accessible for travellers from across the region and beyond.

Pench National Park, a jewel spanning Madhya Pradesh (M.P.) and Maharashtra, offers thrilling safaris across diverse zones. My unforgettable encounter with tigers last year at Bandhavgarh National Park, another gem in M.P., made exploring Pench's Madhya Pradesh side an easy choice.

Let's delve into the captivating world of Pench safaris on the M.P. side!

Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India | A photo taken from a safari jeep in Pench National Park, India, showing a lush green forest teeming with trees and sunlight filtering through the canopy.

Pench National Park offers exciting adventures in two main areas - the core and buffer zones.

The three core zones, Turia, Karmajhiri, and Jamtara, have the highest density of tigers. However, unlike Bandhavgarh, these core zones are spread out.

For instance, Turia is 30 KM away from the farthest core zone, Jamtara. Choosing the right zone is crucial as it affects where you'll stay, how long it takes to get to safaris, and even your budget for park entry fees.

Khawasa, Khumbhpani, Masurnala, Rukhad, and Teliya are buffer zones.

The Turia Gate, king of the core zones, is renowned for tiger encounters and breathtaking jungle vistas.

Over 20 safaris in two years have given me a wildlife-whisperer's instinct for crafting the perfect jungle safari itinerary. Here's the key: to truly immerse yourself in the park's tranquillity and witness the vibrant tapestry of life, aim for at least three safaris.

Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India: Tourists wait at the Turia gate, the park's entry point, for their safari tour.

Pench National Park offers a captivating experience, and for my adventure, I opted for five unforgettable journeys. Focusing on the core zones, I chose three safaris departing from Turia Gate. The remaining two ventured out from Karmajhiri Gate, offering another perspective on this incredible park.

From Train Tracks to Tiger Tracks: A Thrilling Encounter in Pench National Park

My adventure began with an overnight train ride, followed by a 94 KM cab journey that steadily transformed the landscape. The last 30 KM saw an exponential increase in forest cover, a thrilling sign that I was entering tiger territory.

Reaching my hotel room, I had a mere 90 minutes to unpack, freshen up, grab lunch, and most importantly, prepare my camera for the evening safari.

A close-up photo of two Nikon mirrorless cameras with telephoto lenses. The camera on the left is a Nikon Z30 paired with a Nikkor Z 70-200mm f2.8 lens. The camera on the right is a Nikon Z7 paired with a Nikkor Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 lens. These cameras and lenses were used to capture stunning wildlife images during a safari in Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India.

The safari entry process was smooth – after paying an additional fee for the vehicle and guide, we were assigned a route and a guide. This was January, the third week to be precise. During this time, evening safaris run from 3 PM to 6 PM, while mornings start at 6:45 AM and last till 11:30 AM.

As I arrived, a sea of green safari vehicles buzzed with anticipation for the game drive. At exactly 3 PM, the gates opened and our convoy was released in groups of five.

A row of safari jeeps parked at the Turia Gate entrance of Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India, filled with tourists waiting to embark on a wildlife safari adventure.

We had only travelled 500 meters when a pack of jackals suddenly crossed our path, indicating the presence of a predator nearby. While we were discussing this possibility, a deafening roar echoed through the forest - it was a tiger!

Our excitement peaked as we joined other vehicles vying for a glimpse of the majestic beast. However, the tiger vanished within seconds into the tall golden-green foliage. This sudden disappearance emboldened the jackals, with one triumphantly trotting off with a large bone.

A Golden Jackal with short legs, bushy tail, and pointed ears standing alert in the dry grass of Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Moving on, we encountered a herd of spotted deer grazing peacefully in the sun-dappled forest. My guide informed me that over a lakh (100,000) of these deer roam Pench, creating a rich food source for its impressive tiger population – over 50!

A spotted deer with large, white spots, grazing peacefully in a green meadow at Pench National Park, India.

Dominated by teak trees and punctuated by numerous water bodies, the forest boasted an undeniable artistic beauty. One such scene featured a cluster of ghostly white trees submerged in a tranquil lake.

The mist clinging to the water's surface along with a pair of peacocks perched on the distant bank created a picture-perfect moment I managed to capture.

Our journey continued, and soon we came face-to-face with a majestic Indian Gaur herd returning from their day's activities. One of these magnificent creatures, seemingly captivated by my camera's long lens, held a pose for a few glorious seconds, allowing me to capture its portrait.

A large Gaur, a type of wild ox with a humped back and long horns, grazing in a field at Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India.

As the sun dipped below the horizon and the sky turned overcast, the final leg of the safari unfolded. The crisp, fragrant jungle air held a unique charm, and despite missing a full view of the tiger, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. My guide and driver appeared slightly disappointed, perhaps feeling responsible for not showing me the park's wonders.

Unexpected Encounter with Langdi, the Tigress of Pench!

A sense of quiet settled over our vehicle. Sensing the mood, I reassured my companions that while witnessing a tiger in its natural habitat is truly magical, it's not guaranteed. Unlike some tourists, I wasn't fixated on just seeing a tiger. The vastness of the open forest plays a role, and sightings depend largely on luck.

Just as I finished, a spark ignited in our guide's eyes – not from my words, but from the sight of a magnificent tigress emerging from the foliage! It was Langdi , the legendary " limping tigress " of Pench! We were the first lucky ones to spot her, and she sashayed past our vehicle, a mere 20 meters away.

The tigress Langdi, known for her limp, walks through the dry leaves of the forest floor in Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India. Her distinctive limp is barely noticeable in her powerful stride.

This encounter perfectly validated my earlier point. Tigers can be seen in Pench, but it depends on factors like time of day, weather, and yes, a bit of luck. I managed to capture a stunning portrait of this powerful tigress as she walked by.

Pench National Park | Madhya Pradesh | India - Langdi, the renowned tigress of Pench National Park, symbolizing resilience and survival in the wild.

If seeing a tiger is essential for you, then a tiring and expensive trip to a vast open forest like Pench might not be the best option. Your local zoo might offer a more guaranteed (and significantly less expensive) opportunity to see a tiger.

An Unforgettable Encounter with a Majestic Tiger

The prior evening's phenomenal encounter with a tigress had left my anticipation for the park's wild wonders at an all-time high. As the jeep rumbled towards the safari gate at dawn, the crisp morning air sent a refreshing chill through the open vehicle. Within ten minutes, we were already navigating the dusty off-road jungle trails.

Within an hour, our guide received exciting news from another passing vehicle – a tiger was feasting on its recent kill nearby! We arrived at the spot; a dense thicket of trees laced with vibrant green foliage. A massive, black rock dominated the area, and it was behind this that the tigress was presumably savouring its meal.

The powerful tiger is sprawled out on the rock, its belly full after a successful hunt. Lush green foliage surrounds the rock, and trees line the background. This image captures the beauty and power of tigers, apex predators of the park.

The rock's height and the thick foliage made it difficult to see the tiger's movements initially. However, after a satisfying meal, the magnificent tiger finally emerged and climbed atop the rock for a well-deserved rest. This provided us with a clear view of this powerful predator, a moment we'll cherish forever.

A Regal Slumber and a Startling Discovery

The tiger, its belly full of its recent meal, stretched languidly on the rocky outcrop, its powerful muscles rippling beneath its magnificent coat. This was a rare spectacle – a glimpse into the relaxed state of a predator, the undisputed ruler of these jungles.

The tiger's posture suggests it's preparing for a restful sleep, its powerful body bathed in sunlight. Lush green foliage surrounds the rock, and trees line the background. This image captures the beauty and tranquility of tigers in their natural habitat.

As we watched, perched on a sturdy branch of a nearby tree, we spotted not one, but two leopards! Their vantage point offered them a clear view of the tigress. Despite the tiger's drowsiness, it seemed the leopards treated it with respect, perhaps even a hint of wariness.

This incredible scene wasn't over yet. To our astonishment, we spotted two more leopards high up in the trees, mirroring the posture of the first two. The sheer improbability of witnessing four leopards simultaneously, all seemingly keeping a cautious eye on the tiger, left us speechless. This was a wildlife encounter unlike any other, a testament to the rich biodiversity of Pench National Park.

An Unforgettable Standoff

As dusk settled, we returned to the park with a glimmer of hope of seeing the tiger again. To our astonishment, not only was the magnificent creature still stationed at the same location, but the four leopards remained perched on their respective branches! The tension in the air was palpable – the powerful tiger, seemingly unfazed, while the usually agile leopards appeared hesitant to make a move.

Their spots provide camouflage amidst the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves. This image showcases the park's diverse wildlife and the arboreal nature of leopards.

This extraordinary scene – a prolonged standoff between a tiger and four leopards – was a testament to the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters in Pench National Park. It was a truly unforgettable experience, and a perfect culmination to what felt like the best all-around safari adventure we could have hoped for.

In my case, for the Karmajhiri safari via Turia Gate, the total cost included INR 2450 for the permit, INR 3700 for the vehicle and guide, and the additional INR 2600 for the 36 KM zone access, summing up to INR 8750.

How to book Pench National Park Online Permit?

For a comprehensive guide to booking online permits for National Parks in Madhya Pradesh, you can refer to the detailed overview in my Bandhavgarh blog post .

The booking process for Pench National Park is very similar, with just one key difference! When you reach the park selection stage on the booking website, simply choose "Pench Tiger Reserve" instead of Bandhavgarh National Park. All the other steps remain the same.

The core zones of the park are closed to visitors from July to September during the monsoon season.

Every Wednesday, the evening safari at Pench National Park remains closed to visitors.

Remember to check with the park authorities and/or the official Forest Department website  for the most up-to-date information on park timings and accessibility before planning your visit.

How Many Days Are Enough for Pench National Park?

Allow yourself at least two to three days to immerse in the wonders of Pench National Park. This duration allows ample time for multiple safaris, exploration of different zones, and unhurried moments to savour the tranquillity of the wilderness.

Where to Stay in Pench National Park?

Pench National Park offers a diverse range of accommodation options catering to every preference and budget. From luxury resorts nestled amidst pristine landscapes to cosy wilderness lodges and budget-friendly guesthouses, there's something for every discerning traveller seeking refuge in nature's embrace.

Following my delightful stay at M.P. Tourism's (MPT) White Tiger Forest Lodge in Bandhavgarh, choosing their Pench property, Kipling's Court, was an easy decision. Situated conveniently less than two kilometers from Pench National Park's Turia Gate, Kipling's Court offers a tranquil retreat after your safari adventures.

While the rooms here come at a slightly higher price point compared to Bandhavgarh, the extra cost is undeniably justified. The spacious interiors provide a welcome sense of ease, especially compared to what you might find at private resorts in Pench, which can be three times the price. But the true charm of the room lies in its thoughtful design and organization.

A Haven of Relaxation

Step inside and be greeted by a warm ambience. Natural light streams through the windows, illuminating a comfortable lounger, perfect for curling up with a good book after a day of exploring. A dedicated writing desk provides a convenient spot to jot down your safari memories, while the sprawling bed promises a restful night's sleep.

Ample closet space, drawers, and storage tables ensure your belongings stay neatly organized, eliminating any clutter worries. The finishing touches – a rich chocolate brown TV unit and roof with soft ambient lighting – create a truly inviting atmosphere. Imagine unwinding in this cool, air-conditioned haven with its soothing wooden floors – the perfect antidote to a thrilling day in the Pench wilderness.

Unwind in a Spacious, Modern Bathroom

After a day of exploring Pench National Park's dusty trails, a refreshing retreat awaits you in your room's en-suite bathroom at Kipling's Court. The spacious design provides ample space to unwind, featuring a designated wash basin area, toilet, and shower.

The cleverly designed bathroom features a separation between the washbasin, toilet, and shower areas.  This subtle separation provides a sense of privacy and functionality, ensuring a comfortable and refreshing experience.  Imagine stepping in after a thrilling safari and enjoying a refreshing shower with steaming hot water – the perfect way to soothe those tired muscles.

Unwind on Your Private Veranda and Embrace the Outdoors

The chance of feeling cooped up in your room at MPT Kipling's Court is practically nonexistent.  Step out onto your private veranda and immerse yourself in the beauty of the surrounding nature.

This cozy veranda provides the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the sights and sounds of the surrounding landscape. Imagine settling into one of the comfy chairs with a steaming cup of tea or enjoying a light snack on the cute little center table – all while breathing in the fresh air.

A Culinary Journey Awaits at MPT Kipling's Court

One of the highlights of your stay at MPT Kipling's Court is undoubtedly the delectable cuisine.  The property offers an all-inclusive meal plan (AP), which means breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included in your room rate.  This is a welcome convenience, especially after a day of exploring the park.

Unlike some resorts where complimentary meals can be underwhelming, Kipling's Court delights guests with a sumptuous spread.  Across all three meals, you'll find a wide array of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, ensuring there's something to tantalize every taste bud.

Fueling Up for Adventure: Breakfast at MPT Kipling's Court

Early morning safaris often mean missing out on the breakfast buffet, but MPT Kipling's Court ensures you don't have to sacrifice a delicious start to your day. The attentive staff keeps track of your safari schedule and inquires about your breakfast preferences the night before. Come morning, a delightful breakfast basket awaits you in your safari vehicle, perfectly packed to fuel your wildlife adventure.

On checkout day, I finally had the opportunity to indulge in the breakfast buffet at the resort's dining area. This spread was a true feast for the senses, offering a delightful array of freshly prepared dishes.

During my stay, one breakfast item truly stole the show: the selection of hot, heart-shaped vegetable cutlets.  These weren't just delicious – they were a delightful surprise, adding a touch of whimsy to the morning spread.  This small detail exemplifies the thoughtful approach to food at MPT Kipling's Court, making every meal a memorable experience.

Effortless Mornings: Your Safari Vehicle Awaits at MPT Kipling's Court

Imagine waking up for your early morning safari, eager to explore the wilds of Pench National Park. But there's no need to stress about reaching the safari gate or navigating tedious formalities. At MPT Kipling's Court, a seamless experience awaits.

Booked a full safari vehicle? Simply hand over your online booking confirmation printout to the resort's reception. MPT Kipling's Court takes care of everything – securing your safari vehicle and ensuring a smooth start to your adventure.

Your experienced safari vehicle driver will handle the minimal formalities of acquiring a route permit and guide assignment. These little conveniences, especially on chilly mornings, make all the difference.  And the best part? This exceptional service is complimentary, offered by the resort with no hidden costs.

Jabalpur Airport (IATA: JAB):  While farther than Nagpur at 213 KM, Jabalpur Airport caters to domestic flights only. Taxis are also available here to take you to the park.

A major junction on the Indian Railways network, Nagpur boasts excellent connectivity to cities across India thanks to its position on the Howrah-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai trunk lines. Finding onward travel is a breeze – you can either hail a taxi upon arrival or pre-arrange a pick-up directly with your chosen accommodation at Pench for a seamless transition from train to safari.

Seoni Railway Station (IRCTC Station Code: SEO):  Located within Madhya Pradesh, Seoni is the nearest railway station to Pench, at a distance of approximately 72 KM. However, it might have fewer train connections compared to Nagpur. Taxis are available from Seoni to reach the park.

Pench National Park lies conveniently on the Nagpur-Jabalpur Highway. This makes it easily accessible by road:

Taxi:  Taxis can be hired from both Nagpur and Jabalpur for a comfortable and direct journey to the park. The travel time typically ranges from 3 to 4 hours.

Bus:  Regular buses ply between Nagpur and Pench National Park. You can disembark at Khwasa or Suktara, depending on which entrance gate you wish to access (Turia or Karmajhiri, respectively). Local transport or pre-arranged pick-up from your accommodation can then take you further into the park.

Pench, located in Central India, experiences extreme tropical weather. January may even bring sub-zero temperatures and frost, while the monsoon typically arrives in the second week of June.

The best time to visit Pench National Park varies based on the experience you seek to embrace. Here's a breakdown of the seasons and what you can expect during each:

During the closure, nearby areas offer alternative attractions and activities for visitors. Lodges and resorts around the park remain open, catering to travellers seeking the region's cultural heritage and natural beauty.

Pench National Park is best enjoyed in the wintertime because of the glorious sunshine. During this season, the park has a pleasant temperature, allowing visitors to enjoy the area without becoming exhausted from the scorching heat.

Monsoon season (July, August, September)

Monsoon received a significant quantity of rainfall in the region, making it unfavorable to visit Pench National Park. Because monsoon is wild animal breeding season, the park remains closed until mid-October.

The vast Pench National Park is stunning all year, but between November and June, when sightings of diverse animals and birds are most common, it is especially beautiful.

Because animals migrate out in search of water more frequently throughout the months of April-May-June, summers are the greatest time to visit if you're interested in seeing wildlife.

Pench Tiger Safari Timing

Pench National Park's safari schedule varies with the seasons. It is crucial to note, however, that the park is closed to guests during the monsoon period because it is a breeding season for animals in the wild.

About Tiger Safari in Pench Tour

Pench National Park is where the Jungle Book comes to life. In the district of Seoni [erstwhile Seonee, where Mowgli was born], not more than 2.5 hours away from Nagpur City, lies this very important reserve.

Forming corridors for movement of tigers between Kanha National Park, Nagzira as well as Bor Wildlife Sanctuary – Pench is now slowly regaining its position as one of the top tiger reserves for a tiger safari in India.

This Tiger Reserve is spread across 2000 sq km in the states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, although the areas close to and in Madhya Pradesh are the most. Pench has one of the highest densities of Spotted Deer in India, and animals such as the Indian Leopard and the Dhol or Indian Wild Dog exist while carefully avoiding conflict with the 80-odd tigers in the wild here. Here, evidence of large villages which have been relocated to bring back the grasslands is apparent with sprawling grasslands now as far as the eye can see, amongst the gently rolling hills which are gorgeous just after the monsoons. So explore this beautiful park on our tiger safari tour in Pench.
