Panna Tiger Reserve

Panna is the twenty second Tiger Reserve of India and fifth in Madhya Pradesh . The Reserve is situated in the Vindhyan Ranges and spreads over Panna and Chattarpur districts in the north of the state.

Panna National Park was created in 1981. It was declared a Project Tiger Reserve by Government of India in 1994. The National Park consists of areas from the former Gangau Wildlife Sanctuary created in 1975. This sanctuary comprised of territorial forests of the present North and South Panna Forest Division to which a portion of the adjoining Chhatarpur forest division was added later. The reserved forests of the Park in Panna district and some protected forests on Chhatarpur side were the hunting preserves of the erstwhile rulers of Panna, Chhatarpur and Bijawar princely states in the past.

Panna National Park - Madhya Pradesh Tourism

Old teak woods, indigenous colourful rocks, clear, pristine waters of the Ken River, the Vindhya mountain ranges and two amazingly high waterfalls make up the setting of one of the most renowned national parks in India. Rich in biodiversity and wilderness, the national park also hosts Asia's only active diamond mine.

The Panna National Park is generally not overly crowded with tourists compared to the other neighbouring national parks, which makes it a surreal, quiet and soothing environment to be in. The wildlife here is diverse and includes deer species like Sambars (which are listed in the 'Vulnerable' category of the IUCN red data list), wild dogs (Dholes), jackals, Indian Gaurs and Nilgai (the largest antelopes in India), and of course big wild cats like leopards and tigers, among others. Not many know this, but Panna is also home to the oldest female elephant, called Vatsala, who at present is around 96 years old.

Panna National Park was considered as one of the best managed and maintained national parks in India by the Ministry of Tourism of India and bagged the Award of Excellence in the year 2007. However due to poaching and other practices, the number of tigers in the park reduced to only 2-4 in 2008. An efficient team headed by IFS Officer, Mr. R. Shreenivasa Murthy, reintroduced tigers from other national parks to Panna with proper monitoring and protection. They achieved successful breeding and thereafter the number of tigers satisfactorily rose up, reaching to 35 today. Panna is thus now mostly known for its incredible tiger conservation.

Idaho college murders: Trial will be moved to new venue, judge rules

The anticipated trial of the man accused of murdering four University of Idaho students will be  moved out of the same county  where the killings took place in late 2022, a judge decided in a ruling released Monday.

Latah County District Judge John Judge heard arguments last month about whether the trial of Bryan Kohberger,  tentatively set for next June , should be moved to Ada County, about 300 miles south and home to Idaho’s capital, Boise. At the end of the hearing, Judge said it would be the “most difficult decision” of his career, and that he would study the law and arguments before ruling.

Judge did not immediately specify the new location in his motion granting a different venue.

Lawyers for Kohberger, 29, had called defense experts who said that potential jurors from Latah County would most likely have biased views of the case because of the intense media coverage and that they would be unable to provide an impartial verdict.
