The moderately challenging Panch Pokhari trek is located in the Langtang valley and Helambu area. This region is little explored and frequently visited. The mountainous terrain is vulnerable to avalanches and landslides during the monsoon season. Therefore, it is preferable to avoid it. You won't enjoy the leeches and earthworms on the trails, either. Mountain places are unfavorable to visit in the summer due to the erratic weather and climatic conditions.

It's a great idea to travel during the winter. However, the upper heights' snowfall, icy cold, and little open sky make it rather undesirable. Additionally, there is a danger of getting off the trekking path if it is dark and snowy outside. This might seem harsh. Trekking should therefore be avoided in the monsoon and winter months.

It is still mostly unheard of by tourists, so you will have much of the trai l to yourself. This trek not only passes through splendid landscapes with crisp mountain views, but it also passes through culturally rich villages to Panch Pokhari – a sacred pilgrimage site during the  Janai Purnima festival in August. At that time, Hindus of the Brahmin caste came to the lakes for their ritual changing of the sacred thread (Janai) that they wear around their bodies. If you can make it here to observe the experience, do!

As soon as the trek begins, you pass through  Sherpa and Tamang villages . Many of these villages, though, do not offer accommodations. Thus, this trek involves camping each night. Locals are exceptionally friendly and you will have a great time getting to know about their culture .

The Panch Pokhari Trek is one of the most accessible treks from Kathmandu, a mere five-hour drive from Kathmandu to the trailhead. After arriving in  Chautara, we start the gradual ascent to the lakes. The trail is spectacular, full of natural wonders like caves, waterfalls, valleys, wetlands, and more. Feel the cool breeze as you pass through lush rhododendron forests, which brightens your mood during this already blissful journey.

Arrive at Panch Pokhari on Day 9 of the itinerary . A soul-cleansing dip in the refreshing freezing water is naturally called for. While soaking in the water, enjoy awe-inspiring views of  Jugal Himal, Rolwaling, Kanchenjunga, and Makalu  mountains. Descend back to  Melamchi Pul Bazaar, buy some local handicrafts if you want and we’ll catch a ride back to Kathmandu.

Our Panch Pokhari Trek is a camping and teahouse journey. Where there are guesthouses or homestays, we can stay there upon your request. Otherwise, we will be camping outside under a tent. Release your attachments to your normal, everyday life and ‘lose yourself’ in the mountains. For a couple of weeks, forget about the worries you have and live in the moment! Enjoy the views and feel the refreshing mountain breeze.

Trekking is possible throughout the year, but Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) provide the best weather.  During the Spring, there is a bit more color and the rhododendrons are blooming, and in the Autumn months, the skies are generally clearer.  The Panch Pokhari Trek requires moderate fitness and acclimatization to avoid acute mountain sickness.  Breeze Adventure  arranges the trek with complete management. Please, feel free to contact us for more detailed information.

Welcome to Nepal! A representative from Breeze Adventure will welcome you our hotel.  We will prepare you with information and gear for your trek. Overnight at the hotel.

  • Max Altitude: 1400m
  • Accommodation: 2/3 Star Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast

In the morning, we drive for five hours on the Araniko Highway to the district center of Sindhupalchowk – Chautara. Upon arrival, we find our trail and stay for the night.

  • Max Altitude: 1200m
  • Accommodation: Guest House
  • Time: 5 Hours
  • Transport: Bus/Jeep

Our first full day of trekking begins with a pleasant walk through a valley. It is awesome to get a first taste of how villages in this hilly region work. Slowly ascend, crossing streams and terraced hills until we reach our campsite.

  • Max Altitude: 2050m
  • Time: 6 Hours
  • Walking Distance: 10km

Make your way uphill until arriving at Kami Kharka. The trail passes through forests covered with oak, pine, rhododendron, and other lush vegetation. During the walk, enjoy the magnificent views of Gaurishankar, Dorje Lakpa, and the Jugal Himal range. Kami Kharka is a grazing pasture for domestic animals.

  • Max Altitude: 2845m
  • Walking Distance: 11km

Our walk today is gentle, with a few ups and downs (‘Nepali flat’). We enjoy the forested path, and hopefully, we will see some wildlife along the way. During the 6-7 hours on the trail, we can see nomadic herders with their animals.

  • Max Altitude: 3000m

After breakfast, we begin the day. It’s a gradual uphill battle for most of the day. The altitude is just starting to take a toll, so we take it slow. The last hour or hour and a half, we descend through forests and catch our breath. Awesome mountain views are scattered throughout the trail.

  • Max Altitude: 2400m
  • Time: 4 Hours
  • Walking Distance: 8km

Again, today is mostly uphill. We break a sweat just about right away when we begin the hike. It is a bit flat from there on out, with some ups and downs in between. Soon, we arrive at Nasim Pati after trudging through the rocky hills and rhododendron forest.

  • Max Altitude: 3700m
  • Walking Distance: 9km

Today is the magical day that we have been waiting for. Three hours of gradual ascending through the rocky bluffs leads us to our destination of Panch Pokhari (‘five lakes’ in the Nepali language). Many Hindus and Buddhists make a pilgrimage here during the Janai Purnima festival in August. At Panch Pokhari, there are two houses for pilgrims and a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

  • Max Altitude: 4100m

After breakfast, we say our farewells to the lakes and take some photos of the precious lakes before descending. While trekking back you move along a steep downward path, passing the Lauribinayak Pass.

Continue the descent through verdant mixed forests. Look out for Himalayan deer, white langur, and lots of other beautiful species of wildlife. Before reaching Dukhang, there are Chhortens and prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze. Dukhang is a beautiful village populated by Tamang and Sherpa people. Explore the monasteries when you get there; they are amazing.

  • Max Altitude: 2100m
  • Walking Distance: 13km

Leaving Dukhang, follow a downhill path towards Dhap. Walk along the banks of the Indrawati River, letting the fresh air and awesome views put you at ease. Dhap is a larger village with some schools, tea shops, and a local market.

Our final day of the trek does not disappoint. We descend through terraced fields along the Indrawati River, appreciating the scenic villages interspersed throughout the trail. Melamchi Pul Bazaar lies on the banks of the Melamchi Khola (River) and the Indrawati River. It is a relatively large town compared to those that we have passed already. There are some lodges, tea shops, government offices, schools, colleges, a post office, and an army camp. We pitch our tents along the riverside and if you’re feeling brave, take a dip in the river! And we get back on four wheels and enjoy the scenic drive back to Kathmandu. Delicious farewell dinner in the evening.

Essential Information

Accommodation.

All our packages include accommodation at the cost.  This accommodation is included in the set itinerary.  While in Kathmandu, we provide a 2-3 Star hotel for you.  During the trek, our guides will pick the best lodge for you to stay in based on their experience as well as room availability. All the accommodations will be twin-shared basis. In the mountain, the Shower and toilet will be on a shared basis. During high trekking season, you may have to share a room with a same-sex trekker from another group.

Nepal has a wide variety of food and it is easy to cater to your needs.  If you are a vegetarian/vegan, gluten or lactose-free, we are able to work around that if you let us know ahead of time.  During your time in the hotel in Kathmandu, your breakfast is included.  Lunch and dinner must be covered on your own.  On the trek, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided.  For teahouse treks, we can order typical Nepali food, continental, Italian, Tibetan, and Indian at teahouses.  While camping, we will prepare the meals for you.  After our trek, we will have a celebration/pre-departure traditional Nepali meal in Thamel.

Guide & Porters

A government-licensed guide will lead the trek.  All our guides have tremendous experience on the trails and are passionate about the trekking industry.  Our guides and porters are dedicated to making your experience of trekking in Nepal a memorable one.  If there is any worry during your trek, our guides will address it.  Your safety is our number one priority.  For groups of more than six people, there will be two guides. For teahouse treks, there will be one porter for every two trekkers.  For camping treks, we will need more porters in order to carry the food, kitchen equipment, tents, etc.

Acclimatization/Fitness/Experience

As many of our treks lead us high into the Himalayas, it is necessary to let our bodies sufficiently get used to the altitude.  Our treks have acclimatization days built into the itinerary.  It is best to take it slow to prevent altitude sickness.  The level of fitness necessary for our treks varies depending on the trek.  On average, expect to walk an average of 5-6 hours per day while on the trial.  Generally, the treks can be done with an average level of fitness.  More important than fitness or experience is one’s personal determination and positive attitude toward finishing and enjoying the trek.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend having travel insurance before going on a trek.  We do our best to take care of you, but something can happen that is out of our control.  In case of a medical emergency, leading to a helicopter evacuation, it is best to have insurance.  You are unable to obtain medical insurance in Nepal and must do so in your home country.  Be sure that your insurance covers accidents abroad and high in the mountains.

Best Time to Travel

The peak seasons for traveling in Nepal are during the Spring (March to May) and the Autumn (September to November).  These times provide the best scenery and clearest skies, but of course, they are a little more crowded than the off-season.  It is possible to trek during the Winter (December to February), but you will face cold temperatures.  It is also possible to trek during the monsoon season (June to August), though the views will likely be covered by clouds and there is a high chance of rainfall.

Please be assured that Breeze Adventure manages our treks to the highest standards. Your safety and satisfaction are our priority. We will support you to the best of our abilities with any issues that may arise. We will work with you to ensure you get the most from your trek and visit Nepal.

Panch Pokhari Short Trekking

Detail itinerary.

"Join a less-visited trekking route located nearby Kathmandu and get to experience distinct trekking to one of the pilgrimage sites in Nepal on our Panch Pokhari trek."

Panch Pokhari refers to the five sacred lakes situated at the base of Jugal Himal. The trail to these lakes is adventurous and presents fantastic mountain panoramas, which resulted in creating a new trekking route for foreign travelers too. It means the Panch Pokhari trek is relatively new and not known to many trekkers. Unlike the other not easily accessible trailheads, one can reach the starting point of the Panch Pokhari trekking in a mere 5 to 6 hours of drive from Kathmandu.

The Panch Pokhari is nestled, at 4,100 meters, northeast of Kathmandu. The region has significant cultural and ecological values. The Panch Pokhari trek route goes through lush rhododendron forests and alongside green rolling hills. You will be passing by terraced fields, alpine pastures, and picturesque remote villages. Instead of tourists, you will be more likely to come across natives along the way.

Panch Pokhari trek is a new addition to our short & easy yet equally rewarding treks in the Himalayas. If you have some spare days in Kathmandu and want to do something lowkey adventurous, then Panch Pokhari trekking is a good option. This trek is for everyone, whether you are a beginner trekker or experienced. Moreover, the Panch Pokhari trek is also family-friendly. You can trek with your kids and the elderly.

  • Short and adventurous trek nearby Kathmandu
  • Less-crowded trekking route

Panch Pokhari Trek route

There are two trekking routes that lead to Panch Pokhari. One begins from Sano Okhareni via Chautara, and the other begins from Bhotang village via Melamchi. The second route from Bhotang village is comparatively easy and short.

Depending upon your time, you can choose either of these routes, and we will make a tailored Panch Pokhari trek itinerary for you. You can do the Panch Pokhari trek following a short or long route as you wish.

Short Panch Pokhari trek

From Kathmandu to Panch Pokhari trailhead, we reach after a scenic 5 to 6 hours of drive. Bhotang village onwards, we begin trekking through villages like Tipeni Bazaar, Dhap, Raithane, and Manekharka. Passing by these villages lets us witness the lifestyle of the locals. We will meet with the locals and get to know their cultural heritage. Every new village will welcome us with its distinct charm.

We will be crossing rushing rivers and streams too, on the way. Snow-capped mountains like Jugal Himal, Dorje Lhakpa (6,966 m), Phurbi Chhyachu (6,637 m), Madiya (6,257 m), Langtang Range (7,234 m), Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), and numerous others are seen throughout the Panch Pokhari trek. Before reaching Panch Pokhari, we will ascend to Lauri Bina. A few minutes of walk from here will take us to Panch Pokhari.

Upon reaching Panch Pokhari, the first three lakes come into our perspective right away. The other two lakes are located a little far away. We will spend a night here and relish the heavenly view and divine atmosphere. Before descending, we visit the temple and get blessed by the deity.

Check out our Panch Pokhari trek map for detailed information about the route.

Panch Pokhari camping trek or teahouse trek?

The Panch Pokhari trekking route has not many tea houses. If we do not book the accommodation on time, the chances are low of getting one. And therefore, we have to do the Panch Pokhari camping trek. Generally, trekkers do camping treks to Panch Pokhari.

While camping, our crew will organize all the tents and cook. We have comfortable high alpine tents that will protect you from cold climate and wind at high altitudes. Likewise, our kitchen staff will cook delicious meals for the group.

The booking is open for Panch Pokhari trek 2022. Moreover, we have also opened early booking for Panch Pokhari trek 2023 (spring & autumn). Contact us anytime for more information.

Meditating and participating in local religious rituals. To fulfil their own wishes, thousands of people visit the holy lakes and surrounding temples on Janai Purnima and Nag Panchami in August. They seek blessings from the holy lakes and temples.

Khiraule Gumba, or Monastery, is the local tourist destination in Mahakulung Solukhumbu. The monastery is Ngonga Thyakchhok Chholing Monastery, founded in 1738. The monastery's exterior design is mesmerizing and unique, making it one of the oldest monasteries in Nepal. It is thought that the monastery was brought to Darjeeling more than 200 years ago by its patrons. Tall pine trees, unusual in Nepal, surround the monastery. The cultural significance of this monastery is equally valued because it is said that “Silent Meditation” (ङ्युङने Nyungne in Sherpa and मौन ब्रत Moun Brat in Nepali) actually started from this monastery in eastern Nepal.

Every month, villagers celebrate "Dasami" (the Tenth Day of the Full Moon) by lighting butter lamps to worship the Buddha. So “Dasami” (the tenth moon day) is a traditional tradition for villagers to pray and perform puja at the monastery. In 1934, 1989, and April 25, 2015, earthquakes affected certain parts of the monastery. So, since then, the local people have started repairing the monastery again.

Panch Pokhari Trek starts from Chautara 1,450m which is reached within five hours long drive from Kathmandu. From Chautara our trekking trail ascends uphill through several small villages and rhododendron forests to Thulo (big) Okhareni via Sano Okhareni . The place offers the spectacular and close-up view of the towering glaciated mountains from this place our trail passes through several dense rhododendron and pine forests, inhabited with diverse wildlife to reach Kami Kharka. Best Season to Trek in Nepal:

Autumn ( September - November ) and spring ( March - May ) is the best season for trekking and mountaineering in Nepal. Weather is mostly clear and temperature is moderate in these seasons which offer beautiful views without any obstruction. Spring grants you beautiful flowers, plants and rare animals. Walking is favorable during these seasons.

Summer (June - August) and winter (December - February).

Though summer has heavy monsoon rainfall, it is very much clearer to trek around Mustang, Dolpo and Nar- Phu valley since they are rain shadow areas. Everest , Langtang , Annapurna as well as Tibet trek are always better to trek in winter season.

Experience & Fitness:

Trekking can be challenging and exhausting. So you might need some fitness training and experience for some tough trial. Nepal Trekking in Everest Base Camp does not require past experience or extreme fitness even though we have more challenging routes in different region compared to that of Everest. Trekking in Himalayas always takes us to challenging altitudes and rocky routes. You could ask for proper rest time and acclimatization to sustain your strength. Mountains can never be achieved in a day. We always provide the detail in our itinerary. However certain training like running, skipping and other workouts will definitely be beneficial in such challenging routes.

Acclimatization:

Altitude sickness is a major risk when trekking. You might experience it on any trails above 2,500 m however; good health, proper care and drinking plenty of water will definitely help you to prevent from altitude sickness. Every trekkers needs to be familiar with the heights and altitude so, for this we have life saving appropriate acclimatization days during the trek, We also provide certain medical support for your relief and emergency rescue through helicopter whenever the situation gets worse.

Eco Friendly:

Our only goal in the Himalayas is to leave the memories and foot prints; Himalayan Magic Treks is concerned on environment pollution issue and global warming. We are always serious and genuine about our garbage during the trek especially during camping. We collect the rubbish and dump it to the proper place to protect our environment and also appeal our clients to do the same. We partake in every program conducted in KEEP (Kathmandu Environmental Education Project) and other environmental conservation programs. We want to promote Safe environment act and stand against pollution & global warming.

Tailor-Made Itinerary:

Sometimes trekking in the Himalayan region passes through unexpected complication like natural calamity, health challenges and many other problems that might result to the changes of the itinerary. So, we kindly request you to cooperate with your guide and the team in such situation.

Highlights:

Panch Pokhari

The Panch Pokhari (five ponds) Trek is in the 9th highest altitude wetland in the world which lies in the Langtang National Park and at the base of Mt. Jugal Himal, Sindupalchok district, Northeast of Kathmandu. There are five separate ponds in one ground including Surya, Bhairab, Naag, Sarasowoti, and Ganesh Kunda which are sacred and considered to be the source of the Indrawati River. The Janai Purnima festival celebrates in August full moon every year when the Hindus come here for the ritual of changing the sacred thread (Janai) – they wear around their bodies. The shamans come here for performing the ritual dance with playing the drum for their graduation, too. The ecology is interesting because it is pretty diverse here. We walk through Tamang and Sherpa villages which is also a cultural trek. So, this trekking route is culturally, religiously, and ecologically very interesting.

This trek offers to see the chain of high hills and Jugal Himal range including Mt. Dorje Lakpa, Jugal Himal, and Phurbuchyachu Himal. This trekking route is suitable for both the first-time trekkers and seasoned veterans of Himalayan travelers who prefer unspoiled culture, nature, and uncrowned trails in Nepal.

This is 10 days camping organized trekking in a remote and unfrequented region, despite being close to Kathmandu. We supply food, fuel, kitchen equipment, and tents by carrying porters. Our cook (chef) prepares daily fresh meals such as Western, Nepali, Indian, and Tibetan. Our experienced guide leads you with providing services of safety and security while on the trek.

Panch Pokhari is a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists and is located in the wild nature in the north-east region of Sindhupalchowk district. The lake is situated at the altitude of 4010m in a beautiful natural setting surrounded by the various Himalayas. Panch Pokhari Trekking is an easy and short trekking for someone with limited time but with a desire to be near the Himalayas.

The short trek to Panch Pokhari starts with your arrival in Kathmandu. After the day of arrival, the trip continues with a drive to Simpal, the starting point of the trek. The trekking trail passes through various settlements of Sherpa and Tamang communities, which gives trekkers an opportunity to understand the Himalayan culture and lifestyle. The trail comes across the beautiful landscape, waterfalls, alpine forest, temples, and many more. The trek also offers a stunning view of Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Phurbi Chhyachu (6637m), Madiya (6257m), Rolwaling Himal range, Ganesh Himal range, and Langtang Himal range. Panch Pokhari, being a group of holy lakes, is visited by thousands of visitors during Janai Purnima festival held in August. People from all over the country come to change their sacred thread known as Janai. People take a dip in the pond before changing or wearing their sacred thread. You can visit the two pilgrim houses near the pond and the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, when in the Panch Pokhari vicinity. Panch Pokhari – A Hidden Gem in the Himalayas of Sindhupalchok

Ranjan Kadariya

  • September 20, 2023

Panch Pokhari is a beautiful place that lies in the Himalayas of Sindhupalchok District. Located at an altitude of approximately 4100 meters from sea level, this is a holy place for Hindu people. The meaning of the name behind Panch Pokhari is in the Nepali language “Panch” means “Five” and “Pokhari” means “Lake” . Thus, the meaning of Panch Pokhari is a hill of five lakes. This is because you can find five ponds at the hilltop in the same place. Similarly, this place is famous during the famous Hindu festival, Rishi Panchami or Janai Purnima . Thousands of pilgrims from inside and outside the country visit this holy place during the festival.

Panch Pokhari lies in Panchpokhari Thangpal Rural Municipality of Sindhupalchok District , Nepal . This holy place is under the Langtang National Park . Likewise, this place is also famous for short treks near the Kathmandu Valley . The place at the top is well facilitated with many hotels to stay overnight. Similarly, the trekking route is also well maintained. The route takes you through dense green forests and beautiful hills. The warm hospitality of local people on the trekking route is the never-forgetting moment you will ever experience in your life.

History of Panch Pokhari

The history of Panch Pokhari dates back to about 2400 years ago. There was a hunter called Bumba Ruwa Waiba . One day he went hunting and reached Panch Pokhari . Meanwhile, at the same time, he saw Lord Shiva planting paddy in the snowy field. Waiba was shocked when he found someone planting paddy in the snowy field. After that, Waiba went near the Lord Shiva and when he was about to reach the place where he was planting paddy, Lord Shiva suddenly disappeared. Lord Shiva disappeared exactly at the place where today lies the famous temple.

Still, there is a belief that some people see the “ Halo ”(plough) and “ Juwa ”(beam) that is used to plough or dig the field below the temple. Meanwhile, there is an outlet of the pond as a waterfall. Some people believe that they can see the Halo and Juwa near the waterfall. And, Hunter Waiba believed that he saw Lord Shiva and he did not have anything to offer. He had a hunter dog and there was a bell on the neck of the dog. He offered the bell at the temple and this can be still seen by the visitors and pilgrims who visit the temple.

Even visitors sleep in the “ Goth ” (Cow Shelter) during the festival time. Likewise, there is a tap to take a holy bath below the famous temple area. During the Janai Purnima, pilgrims take the holy bath and change their “ Janai ” during this festival.

Secondly, there is a belief that the people who do not have children are blessed to have the child after visiting and worshipping in this holy temple. Thus, the Hindus and Buddhists people who do not have children visit, offer prayers, and take blessings from the temple.

Panch Pokhari Trek – An Unexplored Trek in Sikkim

When you read the name of the trek or look it up on the internet, in all probability you will be reminded or be informed of the Panch Pokhari Trek that lies on the Eastern Himalayas in Nepal . But there is a beautiful trek route with the same name in Sikkim that people hardly know of.

panch pokhari trek route

While there are many other popular treks in Sikkim like Goecha La that are walked upon by a huge number of trekkers every year and are considered one the Topmost Treks in the Himalayas , this lesser known trek route is truly a hidden gem in Sikkim.

About Panch Pokhari Trek

‘Panch Pokhari’ translates to ‘five lakes.’ On this route, you’d be accompanied by enchanting greenery and panoramic views of the Kanchendzonga ranges. What makes this trek unique is the fact that it is not frequented by many people as it is the case with other trekking routes. There is no tinge of commercialisation and there are very few trek organizers who are mostly locals, giving you an experience of community-based tourism.

panch pokhari trek route

The trailhead of the trek is Phamthang , a secluded village in South Sikkim and the nearest town to the base village is Ravangla. Even though Phamthang is the base of the trek, it will be ideal to consider staying at Borong , another village which lies about 10km before Phamthang and has several homestays and options for accommodation.

The trek route cuts through Reserve Forests and Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary which opens up possibilities of spotting a Red Panda or Himalayan Black Bear .

It takes 3-4 days to ascend till Panch Pokhari – the five gorgeous fresh water lakes situated at an altitude of 14166 feet surrounded by snow capped peaks of Himalayan ranges. The view from Panch Pokhari is dreamy enough to make you feel that you have landed up in a magical world. From the highest point of the trek, it takes 2-3 days , depending on your capacity to descend back to the base – Phamthang.

The difficulty level is moderate and it takes 5-6 days to complete this high altitude trek.

Best time to go for Panch Pokhari trek

The best time to trek to Panch Pokhari is the months of April and May. During this time the various species of Himalayan flowers are in full bloom and the mountain villages are dotted by multiple shades of rhododendrons, making the sceneries reach an epitome of beauty. The exceptionally beautiful Himalayan flower Rheum nobile , locally known as ‘Sikkim sundari’ also blooms on the trek route during this time. The height of these flowers range between 3-5 feet and are fascinating to look at.

panch pokhari trek route

The time between August and October too is a favourable time to go for this trek. The skies are clear offering stunning views of the snow clad mountain ranges.

Winter months of November-February should be avoided as the route is covered in snow and the weather becomes extremely chilly.

How to reach Borong

  • The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport.
  • The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri.

By private/reserved vehicle

  • From Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri, you can directly reach Borong by a private cab. The charges would be INR 4000 approximately.
  • If no cab agrees to take you till Borong, ask them to drop you at Ravangla . The cost should be between INR 3000-3500.
  • From Ravangla, take a second cab till Borong, that’d cost you around INR 1000.
  • The journey would roughly take 6 hours including a halt.

By shared vehicle

  • If you wish you to travel by a shared vehicle, head to SNT bus terminus in Siliguri from the airport or railway station.
  • From SNT bus terminus there are shared sumos available for Ravangla that’d cost INR 250 per person.
  • Upon reaching Ravangla, take a private cab till Borong, which would cost you around INR 1000. There are little chances of getting a shared cab from Ravangla to Borong as it is a secluded hamlet.

Day 4: Gairi Orar – Panch Pokhari – Gairi Orar

The most waited day is finally here where you walk the last stretch of 9 kms with a halt in the forest of Majnagi Kharkha, to reach Panch Pokhari, the highest point of your trek. You could start very early on this day so that you get to spend some time by the lakes. When you reach Panch Pokhari, you’d realize that the view is worth the climb. The crystal clear waters of the five holy lakes will leave you mesmerized and it will be difficult for you to make your way back.

By afternoon, you can start to descend back to the campsite in Gairi Orar where you’d spend the night.

Day 5: Gairi Orar – Chandu

You take the same trail to climb down to the campsite at Chandu and spend the night on fifth day of your trek.

Day 6: Chandu – Aloo Tar – Phamthang – Borong

This sounds like such a nice trek. I always enjoy a challenging hike, I always feel so good afterwards! Must plan this one out.

This trek looks wonderful, I am also bowled over by the beauty of Sikkim Sundari and the surroundings. Probably sometime when I am in Sikkim, I would like to try out this trek.

Being on the trek which is less explored by others must be an enthralling experience. Your detailed post on the trek is a perfect checklist for all enthusiasts.

There is perhaps no greater joy in exploring such hidden beauties through trekking! I hadn’t even heard about this trek before but I love how comprehensive this guide is. The Sikkim Sundari flower just had me!

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

panch pokhari trek route

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

panch pokhari trek route

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

panch pokhari trek route

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

panch pokhari trek route

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
