12 Top Things to Do in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand

mussoorie trip

Tony Waltham / robertharding / Getty Images

Mussoorie, located in Uttarakhand, is one of India's most popular hill stations , established by British colonizers to escape the summer heat. The first house to be built there was that of Lieutenant Frederick Young of the East India Company in 1823, who used it when shooting game. Not long after, Sir Henry Bohle started India's first brewery in 1830. Indian royalty arrived later, with many maharajas constructing grand summer retreats there—some are now heritage hotels.

Mussoorie is set on a ridge about two hours north of Dehradun, where the nearest airport is located. Its easy accessibility from Delhi brings a chaotic convergence of tourists during the May to July peak season, causing traffic jams and delays—it's probably best to avoid visiting then. Here's how to make the most of your time in this fascinating corner of the country.

Get Your Fill of Adventure Sports

Uttarakhand Tourism

Adrenaline junkies, rejoice! It turns out the Mussoorie area of Uttarakhand is one of the best places in the country for adventure sports so you can try your hand at bungee jumping, mountain biking, trekking, paragliding, skiing, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.

Those wanting to take on river rafting are in for a treat, with major whitewater rivers like the Ganga, Tons, Kali, Kosi, Yamuna, and Alaknanda nearby. Rafting season happens from September to June, so plan your trip accordingly if this is a one of the main reasons you're planning to visit this part of the country.

Commune With the Animals at Benog Wildlife Sanctuary

Located just a 25-minute drive from Mussoorie, Benog Wildlife Sanctuary is a wonderful place to get back to nature during your trip to India, especially for birding enthusiasts, who can spot red billed blue magpies and white capped water redstarts, among other birds. Keep an eye out for other woodland critters like owls, mountain quail, deer, and leopards.

Ride the Cable Car to Gun Hill

Uniquely India / Getty Images

Get a bird's-eye view of Mussoorie and the Doon Valley by taking the red cable car up to Gun Hill from Mall Road. It's known as The Ropeway to Gun Hill, which, at 6,800 feet above sea level, is the second highest peak in the area. It also gets its name from the cannon that the British fired everyday at noon to help people know the time.

Unfortunately, the commercialization at the top of the hill is a disappointment to some. Expect to find a hodgepodge of food stalls, souvenir shops, amusement rides, and local costumes to dress up and be photographed in.

The cable car runs from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. in summer, but starts and finishes earlier during the rest of the year. The journey time is only about five minutes, one way. Both the ticket office and boarding point are at Jhula Ghar, located about midway along Mall Road. Tickets cost 125 rupees per person and are in very high demand during peak season.

Stroll Along Mall Road

Like other hill stations in India, Mussoorie also has a Mall Road that runs through the heart of town. This lengthy pedestrian-only boulevard, which visitors gravitate to, starts at Library Bazaar and ends at Kulri Bazaar, featuring a carnival-like atmosphere in summer when it's chock full of people, shops, restaurants, and entertainment.

One of the main attractions is the Jawahar Aquarium. Those interested in Mussoorie's old time charm will find historic Mussoorie Library to be a noteworthy building—unfortunately, you can't go inside though, as it's only open to library members. Bookish types should have a drink at the renowned Writer's Bar at WelcomHotel The Savoy , located just behind the library.

Drop by the Cambridge Book Depot at the Kulri Bazaar end of Mall Road, which is a favorite of author Ruskin Bond, who is there every Saturday between 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to meet fans and sign autographs. Feeling hungry? The best momos in Mussoorie can be found at Momos Tibetan Kitchen, about 300 feet from the Cambridge Book Depot. Nearby, travel-themed Cafe By The Way serves snacks and superb coffee. Keep an eye out for murals depicting the region's customs on Mall Road as well.

Swim at Kempty Falls

Exotica.im / Getty Images

If you don't mind unruly crowds and unclean water, the man-made swimming pool at the bottom of Kempty Falls is the place to be in the peak summer season. Such is its popularity that it usually fills to capacity with hundreds of tourists.

Kempty Falls is located about eight miles northwest of Mussoorie. To get there, take a shared taxi from the Gandhi Chowk taxi stand near the library. Government tourism enterprise GMVN also operates buses from the Library Bus Stand and has an office next to it. Those who don't want to climb the stairs to reach the waterfall from the parking area can pay 120 rupees per person to take a cable car all the way up. Changing rooms, lockers, swimwear, and equipment hire are available at a nominal cost.

Alternatively, those who prefer unspoiled natural beauty should give Kempty Falls a miss and go to Bhatta Falls or Jharipani Falls (while they're still secluded) instead.

Marvel Over the Corn Village

Sandra Leidholdt / Getty Images

Not far past Kempty Falls, Sainji Village is a remarkable offbeat attraction where the buildings are decorated with bunches of corn—the residents, who farm corn, hang it out to dry and preserve the seeds for sowing next season. You may also come across bundles of red chilies drying in the sun.

Sainji's Garhwal English Medium Schoo l was set up by a Canadian woman and her husband, who heads the village, to improve education in the area—volunteers are also accepted. Many upmarket hotels in Mussoorie and Landour, such as Rokeby Manor , also arrange trips to Sainji village to help support the locals. You can spend a day interacting with them, learning about their way of life, and sampling their delicious food, including roti made with corn flour—they love receiving visitors!

Visit Mussoorie's Tibetan Settlement

Dinodia Photo / Getty Images

Happy Valley, established by the Dalai Lama after he fled Tibet in 1959 and now home to around 5,000 Tibetan refugees, is a peaceful place to escape the clamor of Mussoorie and gain insight into the Tibetan way of life. It's possible to hike up from the Library end of Mall Road in about 45 minutes, or you can simply take a taxi.

The highlight is the small but vibrant Shedup Choepelling Buddhist Temple, also known as the Tibetan Buddhist Temple, which is surrounded by carefully maintained gardens and offers a spectacular valley view, especially at sunset. Other attractions here include the magnificent golden Buddha statue atop the hill and the Tibetan school. The student's beautiful artwork can be purchased if you're looking for a meaningful souvenir or gift to bring home.

Learn About Local Culture at SOHAM Heritage and Art Center

SOHAM Heritage & Art Center

This informative private museum was founded in 2014 by yoga exponent Sameer Shukla and his wife Doctor Kavita Shukla, who has a doctorate in drawing and painting, to preserve the heritage of the Himalayan region. It showcases all kinds of items related to the area's people, including photographs of ancient rituals, paintings, sculptures, musical instruments, and handicrafts.

The museum is situated about a 20 minute walk southeast of the Kulri Bazaar and is open daily except Wednesday, and entry is free.

Buy Natural Shawls and Scarves from Local Weavers

Himalayan Weavers

Skip the dime-a-dozen shops on Mall Road and head straight to Himalayan Weavers for exquisite hand-woven shawls and scarves, made from natural fibers such as wool, eri silk, and pashmina that are colored with natural dyes.

Himalayan Weavers was set up in 2005 by Doctor Ghayur Alam and his British wife Patricia, who relocated to the area from Delhi. Their aim was to get the area's residents to stop illegally picking medicinal plants by providing a market and income for their wool and other handmade items.

The business now supports many local weavers, too. Patricia comes up with all the designs and the wool is dyed in a room in the back of their house in Masrana village on Mussoorie-Dhanaulti Road. The house also features a showroom, where the products are displayed and sold, and you'll be able to chat with the knowledgeable owners and learn about the weaving process over a cup of tea. While the products here cost more than the ones you'll find on Mall Road (stoles start from about 800 rupees and shawls from 2,000 rupees), they're pure wool.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Himanshu Khagta / Getty Images

Jabarkhet Nature Reserve was established by conservationist Sejal Worah and landowner Vipul Jain, and is the first of its kind in Uttarakhand. A 110-acre, privately-owned and operated forest reserve, it opened to the public in 2015. Walking in its woods is wonderfully rejuvenating and reinvigorating. There are eight well-marked trails, each taking a few hours to cover. You'll come across all kinds of flowers, butterflies, and even mushrooms.

The reserve is situated 2,000 feet above sea level, about a 15-minute drive from Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Dhanaulti Road. It's open daily from sunrise until sunset and the entry fee is 350 rupees per person. Guided walks costing 500 rupees per person are offered for those who are keen to know more about the reserve's flora and fauna. Offbeat, bespoke walks including overnight treks and village visits can also be arranged.

If you're feeling energetic, a two-hour scenic hike uphill from Kulri Bazaar will bring you to the highest point in the area, Lal Tibba , or Red Hill, located about 7,500 feet above sea level. There's also a cafe with an observation deck and high powered binoculars to help you enjoy the view.

West of Library Bazaar, you can hike up to surveyor Sir George Everest's House in about two hours for more outstanding views. Further along in the same direction are Cloud End and Echo Point, a private forested estate that you can enter by paying 50 rupees. Picturesque Camel's Back Road is a prominent thoroughfare that connects Library and Kulri bazaars, offering numerous viewpoints, including one across to a camel-shaped rock formation and an old British cemetery.

Entertain the Kids at Company Garden

This sprawling municipal garden, named after the British East India Company, is popular with families. Young kids will enjoy the pedal boats, a wax museum featuring statues of Indian and international celebrities, and assorted rides. There's also an artificial waterfall amid the flowery foliage.

The garden is located on the outskirts of Mussoorie near Happy Valley and on the way to Kempty Falls. It's open daily until sunset and the entry fee is 25 rupees per person. tickets to the wax museum cost 100 rupees per person and rides are extra.

Attend the Mussoorie Mountain Festival

Mussoorie Mountain Festival

The iconic Mussoorie Writer's Festival, founded in 2005, formally evolved into the Mussoorie Mountain Festival in 2017. While it originally concentrated on promoting Mussoorie’s literary heritage, it now has a broader scope: to be a "community celebration of Himalayan culture, natural history, and exploration."

Its big focus today is conservation. The three-day festival features talks, panel discussions, film screenings, music performances, storytelling, and photographic exhibitions.

Mussoorie – A Complete Travel Guide and Itinerary

Reveling in its sobriquet “Queen of the Hills”, Mussoorie stands out among all the hill stations in the world. This elegant town, steeped in old world charm has been blessed by more than its fair share of natural beauty. A glimpse of the layers upon layers of hills, rising up higher and higher to join the eternally snow clad Himalayas can jolt even the most jaded traveler to attention! Some of the most majestic peaks in the Indian Himalayas can be clearly observed from Mussoorie – Chaukhamba, Bandarpunch, the Gangotri group, and Srikantha are a commanding presence in the distance. These spectacular views of steep, rolling hills draped in dense forests of oak, cedar, pine, birch rhododendron and of course, holy Deodar trees will have you goggling with wonder.

Mussoorie town spreads out over a ridge in the Garhwal Himalayas, more than 6500 feet above sea level. Although founded less than 200 years ago, its strategic location played a huge role in establishing its importance. It is a pit stop for Hindu pilgrims on the sacred “Chota Char Dham Yatra” to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath; as well as adventure enthusiasts who are gearing up to scale the higher mountains beyond. The mighty rivers Yamuna and Ganga also flow past the two sides of Mussoorie for nearly 19 kilometers.

Know Mussoorie

How to plan a trip to mussoorie.

Mussoorie’s pleasant weather, fresh and life-giving breezes, scented mists and gorgeous panoramic views act as a magnet for tourists weary of the heat and dust of the Indian plains. A surprising number of foreign tourists also flock to Mussoorie every year, especially during Christmas, when the town is at the apex of its natural beauty. The pristine, snow blanketed town to match the majestic Himalayan peaks, and this vista against a bright blue sky is one that will stay with you forever. How you can plan this stunning and charmingly beautiful hill station is what I will be discussing in this article.

Where is Mussoorie Located?

Mussoorie is located in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand , in the Garhwal Himalayas. It lies 300 kilometers to the north of the national capital New Delhi and is accessible by road, rail and air. The nearest railheads are at Dehradun and also at Haridwar, from where you reach it via Rishikesh and then Dehradun. It is located at a height of more than 6500 feet with its highest point at “Lal TIbba” at 7500 feet. It is flanked by the Himalayas towards the north and northeast, and Shiwalik ranges to the south. You can also behold panoramic views of the entire Doon Valley from up here, and a magical sight it is!

Why to visit Mussoorie?

If you weren’t sure whether or not you should visit Mussoorie then mentioned below are a few reasons why you should. To sum up, Mussoorie is your destination if:

  • You want to visit a hill station to end all hill stations
  • You are a thrill seeker looking to test yourself; looking forward to enjoy some fun activities
  • You want peace and quiet from din and drama of city life; want to spend some time in peace and tranquility
  • You want to relax in a soothing, calm and above all cool temperature
  • You want to explore the upper Indian Himalayas

Is Mussoorie safe to travel?

Is it safe to travel to Mussoorie? Well, a one-line answer to this question would be that yes it. But there are of course several terms and conditions applied when we talk a topic like safety. Mussoorie is a hill station with steep climbs and a winding road that gets narrow at a lot of places. So you must have a decent enough driving experience and should know how to handle a vehicle in a hilly region. This place receives a lot of snow during winter and then it rains cats and dogs here in Monsoon.

The crime rate in the area, however, is almost next to none. So as long as you check the weather forecast before leaving, drive safely and sensibly, do not get into any unnecessary arguments then yes, Mussoorie is a very safe place to visit. However, visitors are advised to stay cautious during monsoon season. The only thing visitors have to consider is to stay indoors as it may rain continuously during the rainy season.

The standard rules of safety like being alert with strangers and not to hang out in strange places will apply to everyone. If you are traveling alone then it is advisable to stay in a hotel in Mussoorie itself and not in a remote area.

Where to stay in Mussoorie

Mussoorie being a much in demand tourist hotspot, you will find hotels of all sizes, amenities and price ranges in this town. Again, it is wiser to pre-book accommodations to get a  good deal. Here’s a tip – the state tourism body Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam operates a chain of hotels throughout the region. They are located at prime spots, sometimes a stone’s throw away from the best attractions. They are also clean and spacious with courteous and helpful staff.

How to reach Mussorie

Due to its location in Himalayas, reaching Mussoorie is only possible by road but it is fairly easy. Mussoorie is a major tourist spot and hence a very well connected town. You can either bring your own vehicle and drive all the way to Mussoorie or you can get public transport.

How to reach Mussoorie by Road

If you were traveling by your own vehicle, then below is the route that you can take to reach Mussoorie. For the sake of explaining the route, I will assume Delhi as your starting point.

Delhi – Ghaziabad – Meerut – Khatauli – Muzaffarnagar – Dehradun – Mussoorie

Depending on the road you took, this entire journey will be between 280 to 320 kilometers. From Muzaffarnagar, you can either head to Dehradun via Saharanpur or via Haridwar. It doesn’t matter which road you take though, because the difference in kilometers and travel time won’t be much. At an average, it will take you about 9 to 10 hours from Delhi to get to Mussoorie once you take in the road conditions, hilly area, and traffic into consideration. The road till Dehradun is pretty much a straight one and then climbs up in a steep manner to Mussoorie for the last 50 odd kilometers.

How to reach Mussoorie by Bus

There are regular buses to Mussoorie from almost every major town nearby. You can find luxury buses operated by private companies or state run services. If you were coming from Delhi, then you just reach to ISBT and board any of the buses operated by DTC, UP Transport or Uttarakhand Roadways . If you could not find a direct Bus for Mussoorie then look one for Dehradun. From Dehradun then, you can look for any local transport to complete the last stretch of your journey. The total fare of the Bus would be around Rs. 500 to Rs. 800 depending on the type of Bus.

How to reach Mussoorie by Train

Nearest railway station to Mussoorie would be the Dehradun Railway Station, located 36 kilometers away. It has trains connecting to New Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu and Kolkata, among others. In particular, the Delhi-Dehradun Shatabdi Express is a 5.5-hour journey one way.

How to reach Mussoorie by Flight

Jolly Grant would be the nearest airport to Mussoorie. It is located 60 kilometers away in Dehradun, which has direct flights to Mumbai and New Delhi. From Dehradun, you can hire state transport buses or private taxis to reach Mussoorie.

How to reach Mussoorie from Dehradun

Once you have reached Dehradun by either train or flight, you can reach Mussoorie by either public transport or a taxi. There are regular buses leaving for Mussoorie from Dehradun train station. Please make sure that you are boarding the right bus though because buses would go to the opposite ends of the Mussoorie Mall, Library and Picture Palace. The last bus leaves at around 8 PM and is usually very crowded. The bus would take about an hour and a half to drop you to Mussoorie and would charge about Rs. 50 per person.

If you wanted to travel by Taxi then you could get those too from either the train station or the airport. From the Dehradun railway station, a taxi would charge around Rs 1000 for Mussoorie and about the same amount of money from the Airport as well.

A third option could be Shared taxis which will cost you Rs. 300 per person for a drop to Mussoorie from Dehradun.

For return journey, you can take a bus from many bus stands in Mussoorie (Library, Masonic Lodge, Tehri and Landour) to Dehradun. From there, the road network is well connected to Delhi, Haridwar, Chamba, Shimla, Chandigarh and Saharanpur

How to reach Mussoorie by Taxi

If you wanted, you could also rent a private taxi for your trip to Mussoorie. Different taxi operators and tour companies offer prices depending on the package you chose, the duration of the trip and the type of taxi you booked. But on an average basis, for a drop to Mussoorie, a private taxi will cost you about Rs. 4000 to Rs. 5000 from Delhi or any other city at equal distance. This taxi will only drop you to Mussoorie though and there won’t be any sightseeing involved. From Rishikesh or Haridwar, a taxi would cost about Rs. 2000 and from Dehradun, you would pay around Rs. 1000.

How to reach Mussoorie in Winter

All of the above modes of transport that I explained above will remain applicable in winter season as well; except for rare occasions when heavy snowfall may block the roads temporarily. Even if that happens, authorities usually clear the road and restore connectivity just as soon as they are able to.

Local Transport in Mussorie

Private taxis – These typically charge Rs. 1000 per person for the Dehradun – Mussoorie journey. A share taxi would reduce the cost to Rs. 300 per person.

Self-driving – Drive into Mussoorie on NH58 till Roorkee and then on NH72-A after till Dehradun. Then, drive on New Mussoorie Road.

Cycle rickshaw – Some flat stretches in Mussoorie offer cycle rickshaws. However, avoid these if possible. They are time-consuming and impossible to navigate through thick crowds. Also, certain areas of Mussoorie such as the Mall Road are closed entirely to vehicles. This town is best explored on foot. It is also pretty costly.

Private car – For a full day of sightseeing, it is wise to book a private car. The cost will be approximately Rs. 1800. At the day end, they will drop you where you wish

By Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN)

When is the best time to visit Mussoorie will entirely depend on your reason to visit; and will definitely be different for everyone. If we talk in terms of the weather:

  • Summer (March through June) – The peak tourist season, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies. Perfect for sightseeing and adventure sports.
  • Monsoon (July through mid-September) – The off-season, and prone to landslides. If you like solitude, this is the time to visit. Also brilliant for a romantic getaway. Be aware that most activities, scenic spots and adventure sports will be closed during this time.
  • Winters (October through February) – Fresh snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. Incredible time for honeymooners. Great for winter sports.

When to go to Mussorie?

So if you wanted to see snow and possibly even catch a live snowfall, then the months of January and February will be the best. But if you are someone who is not too fond of cold weather than definitely avoid traveling at this time. The months of April to March are generally considered to be the best time to go because the weather in these months in Mussoorie is the best. It, however, does get crowded at this time because a lot of families plan their Mussoorie trip at this time only. So if you are not too fond of crowded places and like offbeat destinations more, then definitely avoid traveling in these months.

July and August is the time for Monsoon and it is generally advised to avoid traveling in the hills at this time. But if you are ready to take the risk then you will be rewarded with vistas that will sweep you off your feet. November and December is a bad time to visit because the scenery at this time will be dull and dry. The weather will be extremely cold and there won’t even be any snow around.

So to break it down,

  • Best time to visit Mussoorie with family: March, April, May; and June
  • Best time to visit Mussoorie in winter: February and March
  • Best time to visit Mussoorie for photography: April, July, August, September; and October
  • Best time to visit Mussoorie on Budget: July and August
  • Best time to visit Mussoorie for honeymoon: January, February; and March
  • Best time to visit Mussoorie for snow: January and February
  • Best time to visit Mussoorie to see snowfall: January

Travel possibilities during different seasons

During peak tourist seasons, all forms of transport will be highly expensive. To get to Mussoorie you must plan at least 2-3 months in advance and pre-book travel tickets. Otherwise, not only will you find prices sky-high, you may not be able to book a ticket at all. During monsoon, prices drop, but traveling through the mountain roads is tricky as landslides are frequent and devastating.

Family Trip to Mussoorie

Mussoorie is a child-friendly place and there are plenty of attractions to keep the young ones occupied and happy. However, since they will be unfamiliar with the terrain, it is important to keep an eye on them at all times, especially in the wilderness areas like waterfalls, viewpoints and picnic spots.

What to Pack

Clothes to pack for mussoorie trip.

Carry warm clothes no matter what time of year you are traveling. Also, dress in layers so that you can put on or take off a layer when the temperature changes suddenly. In winter especially, thermal wear and heavy jackets are a must. Carry extra pairs of clean socks at all times. All mountain areas can experience sudden or continuous downpours at all times of the year, so carry an umbrella, poncho or windcheater. Mussoorie is best explored on foot, so sturdy, all terrain, all weather shoes are a basic requirement. Remember, respect the sentiments of the local tribal people and do not wear clothes which are revealing, especially when visiting a holy place such as a Monastery.

Mussoorie Road Condition

Condition of the road to, in and around Mussoorie is a mix of good and average. There are really no bad sections of road that can become a problem. Coming from Delhi, the entire road is mostly smooth except for a few bad patches around Haridwar and Rishikesh; or near Chhutmalpur if you were coming from Saharanpur side.

Best Vehicle for Mussoorie Trip

There is really no best vehicle for visiting Mussoorie. I have seen locals here drive around in a Maruti 800 or Alto. The only thing needed is that your vehicle is in good condition and well serviced. With that being said, the roads within Mussoorie are very steep and narrow at a few places with sharp turns. When I say steep, I mean the kind where a Royal Enfield climbed up in 1st gear with a single rider and I wasn’t sure if it was going to make it. If you are bringing your car here, it would be best to not drive it inside the town unless you are really good at the wheel and know how to maneuver a vehicle at such climbs.

People and culture

Mussoorie is an eclectic mix of various ethnic Kumaoni and Garhwali tribes (they lived here since time immemorial), Gurkhas, Nepalis, Tibetans, and migrants from the Indian plains who settled here decades ago. Although the town was established by a European country, it has a quintessential Indianness – of colorful, bustling and a perfect example of unity in diversity. Mussoorie celebrates tribal folk festivals, Tibetan holy days, Christmas, and of course the Hindu religious festivals with equal elan and enthusiasm.

  • July: Hariyala – A celebration for the wedding of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva
  • August: Olgia or Gheeya Sankranti – A festival to celebrate the ripening of the harvest and the full abundant treasures from nature

What to Eat in Mussoorie

Garhwal cuisine has a rustic character, being simple, homely, nutritious and inexpensive. Much of the food is grown and consumed locally. In fact, if you ask for local dishes, it is likely that the rice, wheat, vegetables or fruits are freshly harvested from some local garden. The organic produce tastes more flavorful than anything you would find in a city grocery. Food imports are mostly made to satisfy tourist tastes.

Local dishes emphasize pulses and wheat. For special occasions, meat dishes are served, which are delicately spiced and cooked, in stark contrast to other north Indian meat-based dishes. Meals are cooked with 4-5 ingredients and the combinations allow flavors to emerge perfectly.

Foods to try in Mussoorie

Here are some typical dishes you will find here:

  • Parathas – Slathered with fresh, unsalted butter and served with a tangy, sour apricot chutney
  • Chicken curry – Mildly seasoned and served on the bone
  • Fish – Caught from the Kempty River, coated in millet past and fried to perfection. Served with apricot chutney
  • Mutton Kachmoli – An entire sheep rotated over the fire and seasoned sparsely to get an authentic, hunted-barbecue taste
  • Kachi – Locally prepared citrus liquor with a dash of lemon juice
  • Momos – A Tibetan gift and much loved. Served with Shezwan chutney
  • Maggie – Cooked with vegetables, each shop and stall offers its own version
  • Egg dishes – Hot omelettes and eggrolls on chilly evenings, how can you resist?
  • Bhaang Ki Khatai – A chutney of bhang seeds, cumin seeds and red chillies cooked in buttermilk and served with parathas

  • Sisunak Saag – Made with nettle leaves boiled in water, combined with butter, tomatoes and salt. A very nutritious side dish for rice
  • Kafuli – Gravy of mashed vegetables and Spanish leaves cooked in ghee or mustard oil. Served with kulcha or roti
  • Sani Hui Mooli – A paste of radish, bhang seeds and lemon juice
  • Bhutta – Fresh sweet corn is boiled or roasted

Where to eat in Mussoorie

Mussoorie offers innumerable options to eat out – large restaurants on the Mall road, tiny hole in the wall shops, street stalls, roadside dhabas and Maggie points. You can eat a different dish every day at every meal! However, if you have the opportunity to befriend a local, try authentic homemade Garhwali fare. Beats the market offerings any day!

Time Needed for Mussoorie Trip

Time needed for visiting Mussoorie will really depend on where you were starting from; but coming from a place like Delhi, 4 to 5 days is an ideal time for the trip. Two days  will be spent in traveling to and from Mussoorie which will give you another 2 to 3 days for sightseeing and exploring all the nearby tourist destinations. Below is an example of an itinerary for visiting Mussoorie.

Mussoorie Sightseeing Itinerary

Covers: Kempty Falls, Lal Tibba, Mall Road and Cable car ride at Snow View Point

  • Day 1: Begin from New Delhi to Mussoorie; lunch on the way and dinner at Mussoorie
  • Day 2: Mussoorie – Hiking and nature walks at Camel’s Back Road, bathing at Kempty Falls, View from Gun Hills, Lal Tibba, Happy Valley and Company Garden. Tibetan Temple visit. Ropeway ride at Snow Point
  • Day 3: Mussoorie – Mall Road in the morning, Zip lining and rock climbing in the afternoon. Relax at the hotel in the evening
  • Day 4: Begin from Mussoorie to New Delhi, check out after breakfast and reach the railway station or airport at Dehradun. Onward to New Delhi

Mussoorie to Kempty Falls

In order to reach Kempty Falls from Mussoorie, you should look for buses heading towards Barkot, Nainbagh, Yamunotri, and Purola. Sometimes Purola buses go via Vikas Nagar which is completely off the route so do confirm with the conductor if you were boarding a Purola Bus. If you were coming from Dehradun, then you can, in fact, catch a direct bus to Kempty Falls without coming to Mussoorie.

You can also take a bus to the Library end of Mussoorie and walk to the Kempty Bus stop from there. From Kempty Bus Stop, you can then take a bus or taxi (or any other vehicle going in that direction) to reach the waterfall.

Bus fare for Library end or Kulri end from Dehradun is Rs. 60 per person and then you will pay another Rs. 15 for Kempty. If you were traveling by your own car then you would have to pay Toll Tax for entering Kempty Village.

Once you reach Kempty Falls, there are two ways to get down to the falls from the road. Either you can take the stairs or hitch a ride in the cable car for Rs.80 per person. This charge is for both getting you down to the waterfall and back up. Make sure you do not throw the ticket away and keep it with you carefully until you are back otherwise the operators will not let you ride back up again.

Camping in Mussoorie

Mussoorie is really a town and there are no camp sites here. There are however a lot of places on outskirts of Mussoorie (towards Dhanaulti) where a lot of camp sites have been set up. You will really have to contact a local tour operator and book in advance.

Mussoorie – A Detailed Travel Guide for Tourists & Travelers

Shefali Joshi

Mussoorie, debatably known as the “Queen of Hills,” is a tranquil little hamlet nestled in the Himalayan Range of Garhwal hills. A trendy choice amongst honeymooners and family travelers alike, Mussoorie has always been a favorite spot for a weekend holiday from Delhi in Uttarakhand . With its always pleasant, sometimes cold weather, the town makes for a perfect getaway, especially in the scorching Indian summer months.

The place is engulfed in yesteryear charm, thanks to its popularity in the British Era. The Raj has left its mark in many hill stations across the nation – Mussoorie is one such place! Of course, the old architecture of hotels and churches splattered across the terrain along with the famous Mall Road, and even the tiniest details of old-timey lamp posts will for-sure transport you to the colonial period.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Mussoorie – The Queen of Hills

Shimla, Ooty, Darjeeling, Mussoorie all claim stake to the Queen of Hills title. Having lineage from Shimla, my completely biased view would say Shimla wins by a landslide (erstwhile Summer Capital of India, you guys!!!!). What do you think? Comment below!

This homestead is at a distance of 285 km from Delhi which makes it the perfect family weekend getaway from Delhi . But, there’s so much to do in this little town and the surrounding region that one such trip would never be sufficient. Mussoorie is a hotspot for various treks nearby in the Uttrakhand region.

During the monsoon, the town is in lush-green color! With the valley being jeweled by the clouds up above, the town presents for a perfect opportunity to be on your feet and explore the quaint little corners of this world! Also, winter presents a completely different landscape, so long as you’re prepared to deal with the crowds of tourists.

The biggest highlight for book-nerds (AKA the traditional definition of nerds) including yours truly is the hope to run into Ruskin Bond! The famed author, resides in Mussoorie, acting as a freelance writer. Every Saturday, the man visits the Cambridge Book Depot on the Mall road. I have heard he is very affable and approachable (haven’t had any luck seeing him thus far!)

Panoramic view from Buraanshkhand

This popular hill station Mussoorie is located at an altitude of 7464 ft and resides in the Dehradun district. Hence, in winters, very nearby Mussoorie, you can actually experience the snowfall around Surkanda Devi or Dhanolti .

Best time to visit Mussoorie

Although Mussoorie looks beautiful no matter what time of the year you visit, the most pleasant weather is from April to June. The monsoon season is easily avoidable – it might not be the safest time for road travel in the landslide-prone Himalayan ranges .

But, if you enjoy the extreme cold conditions or want to experience snowfall, then December to February will be the right time to go. The Mussoorie temperature in summer months witnesses a maximum high of 25-35 C in May/June, while the winter cool hovers around 0-4 C in December/January.

However, I must warn you that both summer and winter months are tourist seasons for the city, and if you’re looking for some peace and tranquillity, you should look at off-season timings. For some seclusion from the hustle & bustle, I would recommend visiting from Mid-February to April.

How to reach Mussoorie from Delhi

Mussoorie is very well connected by road. To reach your destination of Mussoorie, you’ll have to reach Dehradun, the capital Uttarakhand. Since local cabs in Mussoorie tend to be an expensive affair, I would suggest having your vehicle, and driving up to Mussoorie if this is a viable option. If not, worry not – there are many ways to reach the town.

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, which lies 60 km from Mussoorie. The journey will take you approximately 2 hours of driving time, and you can even book cabs online.

Again, the nearest train station is Dehradun, located around 35 KMs from Mussoorie. There are cabs available here for hire & share as well. They have a fixed charge of INR 1000. A bus service is also available. There are multiple trains running between Delhi & Dehradun .

The most convenient journey can be made in Shatabdi, which leaves at 6:45 AM and reached Dehradun at 12:50 Pm. Another great option is Nanda Devi AC Express which leaves at 11:50 PM and reaches at 5:40 AM in Dehradun.

Traveling Delhi to Mussoorie by road

The best route to drive from Delhi to Mussoorie is

Delhi – Mohan Nagar – Modi Nagar – Khatauli – Muzaffarnagar – Roorkee – Dehradun – Mussoorie

The overall journey takes around 7 hours of driving time.

Self Driving from Delhi

This is a valid option and shall save you a tonne of money in terms of hiring local cabs at Mussoorie. You can also rent out self-drive cars in Delhi. Only use this option if you’re a comfortable driver in the hills.

While the journey is not tedious and the roads are mostly well maintained- if you’re not confident about driving in the hills, it is better to be safe and use other modes of transport.

Do not forget to check our list of things to carry on a self-drive trip to the Himalayas .

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Mussoorie by public transport

Lots of options are available and the connectivity is great in terms of using public transport to reach Mussoorie.

There are regular UPSRTC and URTC buses that run from Kashmiri Gate, Delhi to Dehradun. You can catch any of these buses and can reach Dehradun .

And then you can catch the bus for Mussoorie which takes one and a half hours to reach Mussoorie. Bus costs from INR 300 to 800 from Dehradun.

Reach Dehradun by train/air and then you can hire private cabs to take you to Mussoorie. You can even hail shared cab services at both the junctions.

From the airport, a one-way journey will cost you around INR 1400, while from the train station, the cost would be about INR 1000 for private vehicles. Shared cabs will cost lesser, and you will need to bargain for the same.

Major Tourists Attractions in Mussoorie

Because of the extreme ease of reaching this hill station, there are not many spots left undiscovered in Mussoorie. If you’re traveling in the season time (i.e. Summer & Winter months), be prepared for people at all locations you’ll plan on visiting.

That being said, it doesn’t mean that the vacation will be lesser fun. Mussoorie is often flanked as a honeymooners’ paradise thanks to the extremely scenic and romantic vibes around the region. Indeed, the green flora of the Garhwal hills along with the distant snow-capped mountains make for such a delightful view.

The Mall Road

The center of all attractions, however, remains the Mall Road. Camel’s back road nature walk is also a must to enjoy the spectacular natural views of the hill-station. Waterfalls, old churches, Tibetan influence with lots of little cafés and temples, the lakes & gardens all add up to provide for the perfect Mussoorie experience.

Must visit tourist attractions include Kempty Falls, Lal Tibba, Happy Valley, Gun Hill, Mussoorie Lake, Christ Church, Sir George’s Everest House, and of course, the Library! Also, the cable car from Jhulaghat to Gun Hill makes for a cool experience! Of course, being a tourist town, there are a lot of shopping avenues – especially The Mall!

Offbeat things to do in Mussoorie

From mountain biking to rappelling and climbing a mountain; from skywalks to ziplining; from ATV rides to paragliding, Mussoorie has your adventure needs covered.

Try your hand at fishing and catch the coveted Trout Fish or head out further and visit Benog Sanctuary or the Jabarkhet Wildlife Sanctuary , both providing ample opportunities for trekking and sighting wildlife.

Perfect Itinerary for a weekend trip to Mussoorie

Although many people follow their own itinerary, if you’re a first time visitor and are planning on exploring the region for a weekend (or an extended weekend), the following tentative plan will be of great help.

Day 0 – Delhi to Dehradun to Mussoorie

Reach Dehradun by early in the AM. You can do so by leaving late at night from Delhi on a train/bus or take an early morning flight to Dehradun. Once you reach Dehradun. Take a bus to Mussoorie or hire a cab. It will take you two hours to get to your destination. Alternatively, you can drive from Delhi to reach Mussoorie directly.

Day 1 – Places to visit around Mussoorie

There are many gorgeous hotels in Mussoorie. Choose as per your need – you can even not book at the hotel before your visit and just roam about the quaint little town and pick the one you fancy. Once all the checking in formalities are done, and you’re settled, go out and explore the town. There are a lot of things to do in Mussoorie, which makes it one of the best weekend getaways from Delhi.

First things first, your day will be jampacked today. Try to ensure that you’re on a timeline and start your day as early as possible. You can even club some of these activities on other days as well or push your itinerary for a longer duration and follow through on a more relaxed pace. The choice is yours.

Sunset Time near Mussoorie

Beginning of your Mussoorie Adventure

Start your day off by visiting Kempty Falls, an amazingly beautiful waterfall. Situated around 15 km from the main town of Mussoorie, you will require a vehicle for transportation. You can check with your hotel to get a cab for the entire day, and this will save you in a longer duration. Enjoy the waterfall and scenic beauty. There is a tonne of eateries nearby, given that this is a touristy spot.

Your next destination can be George Everest which is a relatively secluded area of Mussoorie. Roads leading up to this place aren’t that great. You might even need to hike for a KM or so if your car isn’t able to make the uphill journey. However, it will be well worth the effort as the view from the top is insane. I strongly urge you to try your hand at some adventure activities; you can try Zip Lining at George Everest.

You can also visit Laal Tibba during your first day in Mussoorie, which is one of the highest points of the town. There is an entry fee of INR 20. Laal Tibba offers some majestic views of various peaks of Himalayas. The panoramic sights of breath-taking skies and views around will make you want to stay here for as long as possible. Certain views are such that you can never look to your heart’s content – try as you might.

Interesting Trip : A trek to Kedarkantha and Juda Ka Talaab .

Ending to the beautiful day

Of course, these are a tonne of activities, and this is a jampacked schedule – bound to keep you occupied for the entirety of the day. Return to your hotel in the night, and then you can take a walk on Mall road and explore the cuisine scene of the region. The food is exceptional in Mussoorie; there is something about the mountain air that makes everything taste amazing.

Day 2 – Dhanaulti & Surkanda Devi

Now that you’re settled into the Pahadi life, start your day by waking up early to catch a breath-taking sunrise. Post a morning walk and breakfast; I suggest you visit Dhanaulti today. Dhanaulti is a small hill station at a distance of around 24 km from the busy town of Mussoorie. The roads are in good condition, but there can be a little problem while driving in January and February due to snow.

The drive takes around one and a half hours. There is an eco-park in Dhanaulti which is a delight to visit as it’s surrounded by nature.

You can also visit Surkanda Devi temple in Dhanaulti which is devoted to the Goddess Parvati. The visit to the temple involves a trek of 1.5 km from Kaddukhal village in Dhanaulti. After exploring the whole day in Dhanaulti, you can return back to Mussoorie by evening.

This is the day you leave for home. If you’re looking for an extended journey then there are a lot of activities you may fit in here and push the leaving date to a later time – the choice is yours!

Accommodation in Mussoorie

Mussoorie is full of beautiful hotels, dripping in the colonial charm. You’ll come across all sorts of options from luxury hotels to hostels!

JW Mariott is an especially beautiful property with exceptional views and surroundings.

Other luxury hotels include Fortune Resort, Welcome Hotel – The Savoy (ITC Hotels). Country Inn is another decent property with lesser charges.

In terms of budget travel, Bunkostel is a really nice place for backpackers and solo travelers. You will only find dorm beds here. Prices are around INR 500 per bed.

Interesting Tip : Did you know about this offbeat place in Uttarakhand called Khirsu ?

Food Options in Mussoorie

Jampacked with food choices, this place is a travelers’ paradise. My favorite thing to do in Mussoorie is to roam about the Mall Road and discover new places. However, some of my all-time must-visit places are:

Lovely Omelette Centre

Situated on the Mall road, this place makes one of the best omelets. The shop has also been featured in various magazines. You can’t miss this place, it is always thronged by locals and tourists alike, and it is such a great visual, watching the two chefs go on with their expertise in making omelets.

Cafe de Tavern

Great place to hang out and the food is amazing. This place will remind you of old-time English pubs, with very laid back vibes. Must try – the Red Wine Sizzler

Kalsang Friends Corner

A double-storeyed restaurant on Mall Road, serving authentic and delicious Chinese cuisine with an exhaustive menu. Food is to die for – momos are a must, and I especially enjoy their Thupka. Also, it is reasonably priced, which is always a plus in my books!

Little Llama Café

Another gem of a place serving amazing food with an added advantage of an amazing view. A very cozy place, the café has a bunch of options in terms of quick bites and continental foods.

Café by the way

This is an artistic little café with amazing coffee and shakes. Situated on the Mall Road as well. The desserts are insanely good, and the Nutella cake will make your day!

Chic Chocolate: Synonymous with Mussoorie itself, this quaint restaurant/café has amazing homemade chocolates along with some lip-smacking old-school pizzas, etc. Their Sticky Jaw toffees make for a great gift to take back home.

Other things to keep in mind

Mussoorie is quite well-connected and the elevation is reasonable. Thus, in terms of preparation, you may treat it as a normal vacation. However, certain important points to note:

ATM availability

There is no problem with the number of ATMs in Mussoorie. Most of the shops and restaurants will also accept the payments through the card. Other things gaining popularity in terms of mode of payments are the zillion online payment options, including Paytm, Mobikwik, etc.

Mobile Signals

Mussoorie is one of the most popular towns in Uttarakhand, so it does not have any network problems. All the networks are available.

Interesting Tip : Are you looking forward to a weened trip from Delhi and not interested in Mussoorie? Well, you can always check another weekend hide out from Delhi – Pangot .

mussoorie trip

I was at India's first astrotourism festival in Mussoorie. This is how it went

"Mussoorie mein kabhi itni garmi nahi thi (It was never this hot in Mussoorie)," says Dharam Singh, our driver, as we drive back to Dehradun from Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, rolling up the window and blasting the AC to find some relief from the sweltering heat.

Dharam, who has been living in Mussoorie and working in this business for more than 40 years, tells us, "The last time it was this hot was in the year 2013 , I think."

Dharam is not wrong. Mussoorie, a hill station in Uttarakhand, was known as the "Queen of the Hills" for its scenic beauty, Himalayan mountain views, and charming colonial architecture.

However, lately, the Queen has been having trouble keeping her crown as she faces problems like overcrowding and rising temperatures that are reaching as high as 35 degrees Celsius.

The lost charm

There is no doubt that Mussoorie is a popular weekend getaway, especially for Delhiites and North Indian cities, and the gateway to the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines. This popularity has made it difficult for tourists to find a moment of peace (due to overcrowding in almost all famous tourist spaces)— one of the main reasons people visit a hill station.

However, Mussoorie is not alone in this predicament. Many other hill stations are facing similar challenges. For instance, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla, another hill station, received 72 lakh tourists between in just January and May in the year 2023.

But is there a way to manage over-tourism, and find other ways to still find serenity and peace in the hill station? Apparently, yes.

Enter astrotourism

Sometimes, gazing at the dark sky and stars is all the therapy one needs. Who doesn't want to witness the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis? However, not everyone can afford a trip to Iceland or be lucky enough to witness it in some other parts of the world ( Ladakh also witnessed it recently).

So, if sitting and spotting stars and constellations sounds interesting to you, astrotourism might just be the solution for you.

What is it? As the name sounds, astrotourism, or astronomical tourism, is a niche form of travel where one can journey to destinations specifically to observe celestial events, stargaze, and delve into the wonders of astronomy.

Experts say that this unique travel experience often includes visiting places with minimal light pollution to marvel at stars, planets, and other celestial objects.

India's first ever

Astrotourism has gained prevalence in many Western countries, with Iceland being a prime example that has made it onto the bucket lists of numerous travel enthusiasts.

However, India is not often thought of when discussing astrotourism. This trend is slowly changing, as after the pandemic, people are seeking unique travel experiences.

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit India's first ever annual campaign dedicated exclusively to promoting astrotourism.

The event was organised by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board in association with Starscapes, an astrotourism company, and was known as 'Nakshatra Sabha'.

Held on the peak of George Everest, this three-day event (from May 31 to June 2) was filled with activities, shows, and fascinating talks by accredited experts, offering plenty of things to do (we will get into the details in a bit).

So, on Day 1, we arrived at Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun after a short 45-minute flight from Delhi's Indra Gandhi International Airport. The weather was unexpectedly warm during the day, although it did get a bit chilly in the evening.

Reaching Mussoorie from Dehradun took us almost an hour and a half (thankfully, there was less traffic) , and after freshening up, we were ready to head to the peak of George Everest. This is where the real excitement began.

The first day's festivities started around 4 pm and included 3D shows (where we learnt about our Earth, space, and the universe, and some facts that we should know) and made a model of mini-rockets that could be launched into the sky.

It was a breath of fresh air as, unlike the other touristy spots in Mussoorie, the peak of George Everest was not crowded with tourists, allowing for peaceful moments to watch the sunset and the sky turn pink.

The slow, cold breeze provided a welcome break from the 48-degree Celsius heat we had been experiencing in Delhi.

The celestial show

The event had plenty of activities to keep us entertained, but the highlight was undoubtedly the celestial shows that made us question everything we saw around us.

During the show, we were asked to put away our phones. This was done so that we didn't strain our eyes and, after a five-minute warning, all the surrounding lights, including streetlights, were shut off to eliminate any light pollution, allowing us to see the stars clearly.

For the show, a substantial setup of six telescopes was arranged, and we were invited to peer through them to observe different types of stars, including Vega (a single star), Alcor and Mizar (binary stars), and the Hercules Cluster (a cluster of stars).

"When you look at these stars that are light-years away, doesn't it make you wonder how tiny your existence is?" remarked one of the experts who guided us throughout the entire show.

Our agenda for the next day of the event included a variety of activities, from panel discussions by astro experts, to solar observation. The event also featured 3D shows and a small makeshift shop where you could buy souvenirs ranging from fridge magnets to laser lights.

Around 3 pm, our panel discussion started, slightly delayed due to the weather. The panel consisted of well-known experts like TV Venkateswaran, former director of Vigyan Prasar; Prabhas Pandey, a retired professor from Delhi University and geology expert, and Aakash Sinha, adjunct faculty at Shiv Nadar University and CEO of Omnipresent Robot Tech. Each expert shared their unique perspectives on astrotourism.

The third day of the event was reserved for announcing the winners of the photography contest that was held during the event.

"A sustainable way to travel"

"We have all seen the effects of over-tourism, so we want to offer new destinations and activities to people that have a lesser impact on the environment," said Sumit Pant, director of marketing and publicity for Uttarakhand Tourism, explaining why the Uttarakhand government wants to focus on astrotourism.

As we mentioned, there has been a surge in travel, with people travelling more than ever since the pandemic. In fact, data shows that India's tourism industry is around USD 178 billion.

But how is astrotourism sustainable?

Ramashish Ray, founder of Starscapes, told  India Today that there are various ways that they ensure this tourism model is much more sustainable than others.

"There are bins everywhere, and we make sure that there's regular cleaning. All our equipment comes and goes, including our movable toilet," said Ramashish.

"1,100 screws, 700 kilos, and 18 people within a span of a month is what happens backstage," he adds.

Remember

The event is weather-dependent and even though the weather reports are tracked continuously and the dates chosen are non-monsoon ones, there is still a chance of passing clouds affecting the event.

Fact Sheet

  • Prices start at Rs 799 per person (event access), and go up to Rs 4,250 (premium package).
  • FYI: The next event will be held in the month of September (after the monsoon season) in Harshil village of Uttrakhand.
