Chronicles of life and living in Negros Island
Mt. Kanlaon: Feared and Revered
July 12, 2013 By Glady Reyes 1 Comment
Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Island is the biggest active volcano in the Philippines and the highest mountain in the Visayas rising to 2,435 meters above sea level. You can say that Mt. Kanlaon is at the heart of Negros Island, nestled almost at the center of Negros Island. It forms the north westernmost tip of the border dividing the Island into the two provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. It’s slopes are shared by four cities and two municipalities. These are the cities of Bago, La Carlota, San Carlos and Canlaon and the municipalities of La Castellana and Murcia. Of the six, only Canlaon City is located in Negros Oriental.
Below is a high resolution image of Mt. Kanlaon on Google Maps. Use the zoom in and out to look into the crater of this majestic volcano.
Mt. Kanlaon: Seat of Legends
Mt. Kanlaon is both feared and revered. Based on Science, Mt. Kanlaon was formed due to the subduction of the Southeast Sulu Sea Basin under the Philippine Mobile Belt which formed the Negros Trench west of the Visayas. But ancient Visayans believed that a Supreme being lived at the summit of Mt. Kanlaon.
There are different versions of the Legend of Mt. Kanlaon. The most familiar one is probably that of the supreme deity Kan Laon. It is said that a fearsome dragon appeared from the mountain and wreaked havoc on the island and to appease the dragon, the people offered a beautiful, unblemished maiden each year as a sacrifice. When the only remaining unblemished maiden was the daughter of the king, the king offered a reward to anyone who could kill the dragon. Then came the prince named Laon whose ability to talk to animals helped him kill the dragon. In gratitude, the king let his daughter marry Laon and the people named the mountain after him, hence, Kan Laon or the “Exalted One.”
Even today, Mt. Kanlaon still has a certain mysticism which attracts numerous faith healers and babaylans to trek to the mountain every year to pay homage to the spirit of Kan Laon. Most babaylans visit Mt. Kanlaon during Holy Week to sort of renew their power and to gather medicinal herbs that grow in the forests of Mt. Kanlaon.
Mt. Kanlaon: The Killer Mountain
The majestic Mt. Kanlaon draws mountaineers and even ordinary people to its peak like moths to a fire. Nicholas Loney , the British Vice-Consul who helped modernized the sugarcane industry in Negros, was said to have died in 1869 while climbing Mt. Kanlaon.
As the third most active volcano in the country, Mt. Kanlaon has claimed many lives including that of mountaineers thus it has earned the name “ The Killer Mountain ” in the mountaineering society. In 1996, without warning, Mt. Kanlaon spewed volcanic rocks which killed 6 climbers.
It is illegal to climb Mt. Kanlaon without a permit so you need to coordinate with park authorities in order to obtain a climbing permit. Nothing can be more dangerous than climbing an active volcano that’s about to erupt so heed the advise of authorities.
Importance of Mt. Kanlaon to Negrenses
Mt. Kanlaon is not only important to Negrense culture but also to the economy of Negros Island. Mt. Kanlaon has been has been declared a natural park by virtue of Republic Act No. 9154. The Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park (MKNP) is a 24,577.6-hectare forest reserve in the heart of Negros Island and one of the few remaining rainforests in the Island. As such, Mt. Kanlaon is also an important watershed area feeding three Negros river systems – the Bago, Nahalin, and Ilog river systems. Mt. Kanlaon is also home to the few remaining endemic species of Bleeding Heart Pigeon, Negros Fruit Dove, Visayan Spotted Deer and the Visayan Warty Pig.
The importance of Mt. Kanlaon is not only in its biodiversity but also in agriculture . The fertile volcanic soil along the slopes of Mt. Kanlaon make the area ideal for agriculture thus the upland areas of San Carlos City and Canlaon City are considered the vegetable baskets of Negros .
What Mountaineers say about Mt. Kanlaon
I would love to experience climbing Mt. Kanlaon but I’m not brave enough yet so I asked Ilonggo mountaineers to share their experiences in climbing the sacred volcano of Negros.
Experienced mountaineer Jay Plantinos has this to say of Mt. Kanlaon, “Its pristine wilderness and magnificent crater summit makes it unique. It’s a place of refuge for someone to commune with nature and escape the busy city life. I always wanted to climb there as if a homesick, always wanted to go back home.”
Edwin Gatia , one of the foremost mountaineers in the country and author of the book Mt. Kanlaon National Park: A Wilderness Experience in Sugar Island say “ Majestic Mt. Kanlaon –the highest peak in Central Philippines, is also one of the few remaining places in the country where one can enjoy watching wildlife and appreciate the beauty of nature…. considered as one of the best destinations for tropical mountaineering, Mt. Kanlaon offers the visitor-climbers that wilderness experience in Sugar Island.. climbing to the summit of this “sacred volcano” can be a physically challenging and demanding exercise as well as being an exhilarating experience..!”

I was climbing Mt. Kanlaon with the foremost mountaineer, my friend Edwin Gatia, together with some other friends in some distant past, many summers ago. I can personally confirm that climbing Mt. Kanla-on is a momentous experience, an experience of a lifetime. To be in its summit, standing at the edge of the volcano, is an exhilarating moment, a pure joy.

Kanlaon Volcano, also spelled as Kanla-on or Canlaon, is an active volcano on Negros Island in central Philippines. The stratovolcano straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, approximately 30 km (19 mi) southeast of Bacolod City, the capital and most populous city of Negros Occidental.
The volcano is a favorite spot for mountain climbers and is the centerpiece of Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park, a national park originally established on August 8, 1934. It is one of the active volcanoes in the Philippines and part of the Pacific ring of fire.
Kanlaon has a peak elevation of 2,435 m (7,989 ft) with a base diameter of 30 km (19 mi) and is dotted with pyroclastic cones and craters. Just below and north of the summit is the active Lugud crater. North of Lugud is a 2 by 0.8 km (1.2 by 0.50 mi) caldera, known as Margaja Valley, with a crater lake.
The volcano has three hot springs on its slopes: Mambucal Hot Springs on the northwest, Bucalan Hot Spring, Bungol Hot Spring. Its adjacent volcanic edifices are Mt. Silay and Mt. Mandalagan, north of Kanlaon.
The city center of Canlaon City, the city that has jurisdiction on the Negros Oriental side of the mountain, lies on its lower slope about 8.5 km (5.3 mi) ESE of the summit.
The most active volcano in central Philippines, Kanlaon has erupted 26 times since 1919. Eruptions are typically phreatic explosions of small-to-moderate size that produce minor ash falls near the volcano. In 1902, the eruption was classified as strombolian, typified by the ejection of incandescent cinder, lapilli and lava bombs.
Volcanic activity at Kanlaon is continuously monitored by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the government's bureau that monitors the volcano and earthquakes in the country. Kanlaon Volcano Observatory is located at the campus of La Carlota City College in Bgy. Cubay, La Carlota City in Negros Occidental province.
On August 10, 1996, a group of 24 mountain climbers were on the summit of the volcano when Kanlaon suddenly erupted without any warning killing British student Julian Green and Filipinos Noel Tragico and Neil Perez, who were trapped near the summit. The authorities rescued the 17 others, including 10 Belgians, another Briton and six Filipinos.
One of the Belgians, Caroline Verlinde, said she and her group were about to leave a site near the crater rim when suddenly the volcano ejected ash and stones. She ran to a tree for cover and saw her friends being hit by falling stones. She said their Filipino guide told them the smoke billowing out from the crater "was just hard."
On June 3, 2006, Kanlaon again exhibited restiveness and spewed steam and ash., issued Alert Level 1 (mild restiveness) on June 12, 2006.
On February 10, 2008 PHIVOLCS issued an alert stating that the seismic network at Kanlaon Volcano recorded a total of 21 low frequency volcanic earthquakes (LFVQ) during the past 24 hours. Due to the increasing number of recorded volcanic earthquakes, PHIVOLCS raised Kanlaon Volcano’s alert status from Alert Level 0 to Alert Level 1, which means the volcano is at slightly elevated unrest and volcanic activity could lead to steam and ash ejections. A 4-kilometer (2.5 mi) Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) was maintained around the volcano, as sudden explosions may occur without warning, but no eruptions occurred.
In the 8 days from 23 August to 1 September, 257 volcanic earthquakes were recorded. Usual seismic activity during quiet periods is 0 to 4 quakes in any 24 hour period. Epicenters of the recorded quakes were clustered at the north-west slope which may indicate movement of an active local fault at the slope induced by pressure beneath the volcano. Surface observations did not show any significant change in the steam emission from the crater. PHIVOLCS maintained the alert status at Level 0.

Mt. Kanlaon in Negros: The Beauty That Breathes Fire
Who would have thought that an elegant centerpiece of a cool and dense forest home to diverse wildlife can pose the greatest threats amongst all creatures surrounding it? Mount Kanlaon , sometimes spelled as Mt. Canlaon, in Negros is a beauty that breathes fire.
Mount Kanlaon (or Kanlaon volcano) straddles the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental. It is the highest point in the Visayas with an elevation of more than 8000 ft above sea level. Currently, Mt. Kanlaon is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, not to mention that it’s also part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
But despite all of these seemingly intimidating facts, Mt. Kanlaon is still the centerpiece of Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park . It is a home to rich wildlife including civet cat, wild boar, spotted deer, hornbill, leopard cat, hawk eagle and bleeding-heart pigeon. These animals are rare and endangered; some are nocturnal, so spotting them is difficult even with the tour guide.
Mt. Kanlaon has also a lot of waterfalls and three hot springs on its slopes. The fact that it’s a volcano adds up the thrill and makes it a favorite spot for mountain climbers. But because the volcano has been spewing ashes and smokes since 2015, its alert level was raised and no trekkers are allowed to be within the 4 km radius permanent danger zone.
However, for the adventurous at heart, you can still hike up to what they call as the ‘base camp’. Mount Kanlaon can be accessed through Mapot and Manawin trails in Canlaon City in Negros Oriental while entry points in Negros Occidental are the Guintubdan trail in La Carlota City and Wasay trail in Murcia town.
Those who are interested to climb need to book at the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Bago City or at the Canlaon City Hall. They can also only accommodate maximum of 10 climbers per trail.
It will take 1-2 hours of hiking to get to the base camp. The trail for the way up is steep. But you’d soon realize that the sweat is all worth it as soon as you arrive to your destination. In the base camp, you can marvel in awe at the breathtaking view of the entire Canlaon City. If you have drones, you can also capture the volcano’s crater since it’s just 4 kilometers away from the base camp.
You can do overnights too but you should bring your own camping tents. The local government is also prohibiting everyone from littering and from using fuel and firewood.

Tourist Spots in Canlaon
The tourist spots in Canlaon are all natural. While the Kanlaon volcano is of course the major attraction of the entire region, there are some beautiful spots to explore.
Kanlaon Volcano
Mount Kanlaon raises majestically on the border of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental. With an elevation of 2,435 m Kanlaon Volcano is the highest mountain not only of the Negros, but of the whole Visayas. The volcano is also the largest active volcano of the Philippines. It’s activity is frequently monitored.
The name originated from the ancient Visayan god Kan-Laon ( The Supreme Ruler – One Who Is the Ruler of Time ) which was worshiped by the locals in the pre-spanish era. Mount Kanlaon attracts mountain climbers and serious hikers from all over the world. Before one can climb the volcano a permit need to be secured with the Canlaon Tourism Office . The climb need to planned ahead of time with the required paperwork being submitted to the office at least one month before the hike. For your own safety you will be only allowed to climb the mountain with a professional guide.

Balete Tree
Century old Balete tree – also known with the local name Dalakit tree- is another pride of Canlon. It is the oldest as well as biggest tree in Negros Oriental, so we were told. The tree in barangay Lumabao has become the biggest attraction of the city. Botanists of Silliman University estimate the age of the tree with over 1,300 years.Visitors might find quite some similarities between this huge 60 meter high tree and the “ Home Tree ” in Jame Cameron’s “ Avatar “.
The Balete tree stands in the middle of rice terraces and coffee plantations. The grounds are privat owned but local government supported. Four cottages are available free of charge on a first come-first serve basis. There are public comfort rooms available.
The place is best for educational tours, picnic, wedding receptions or any celebrations, as it has electricity and good water supplies. Better bring your own food and drinks if you wish to stay longer. There is no restaurant around but some small booth selling soft drinks and bottled water.
Tourists might go there via Habal-Habal. The driver may ask up to 150 peso for the trip to the Balete Tree . The way there goes also through a man-made line-up of eucalyptus trees.
Tourist Spots and Attraction in Canlaon City
Padudusan falls and water slide.
Another Canlaon Tourist Spot is the Padudusan Falls and its natural water slide. Located in barangay Masulog, just at the foot of Mount Canlaon, it take 25 mins ride habal habal from city proper and another 10 minutes walk. There is an old bridge where people can walk, and a newer bridge where motorbikes are safe to cross. It is an accessible place with no entrance fee and is a local favorite.
There are a few cottages available nearby and plenty of space on the big rocks around to have a nice picnic in the shades of trees. Padudusan Falls is a natural gift to the neighboring native houses and people of this area. Its crystal clear drinkable water from Mount Kanlaon is inviting. Once can have a refreshing dump in the small round pool. Local and foreign visitors find the resident Canlaonians very friendly; showing great hospitality to their guests.
Known as the “Vegetable Basket of Negros Oriental” Canlaon City takes pride in planting different vegetables, fruits and crops. The Rice and Veggie Terraces can be seen all over Canlaon.
If you are looking for an adventure, visit the Canlaon Suludnon Fall. It is almost a hidden waterfall, where visitors need to hike in order to reach its refreshing waters. Nevertheless, it is still a favorite by both locals and tourists. The area have big rocks where people can enjoy a nice picnic after swimming.

Mt. Kanlaon: Visiting the Mountain God (Part 1)
Reinhold Messner is a renowned Italian adventurer, mountaineer, and explorer. He is the first person to climb Mt. Everest alone and without supplemental oxygen. He was the first climber in the world to successfully climb all fourteen Eight-Thousanders, mountains that are 8,000 meters above sea level and higher. With his amazing feats, adventurers all over the world consider Mr. Messner to be one of the greatest climbers in history. Yet, the acclaimed mountaineer said, “By climbing mountains, we were not learning how big we were. We are finding out how breakable, how weak, and how full of fear we are.”
That is exactly how we feel every time we climb a mountain. We attempt to reach summits to help us remember how human we are. We climb mountains so that we can meet ourselves, seek answers about why we exist in the first place, how we are connected to the world, and commune with Mother Nature.
One such mountain that could eloquently teach us about these things is the mighty and majestic Mt. Kanlaon in Negros, an active stratovolcano straddled between the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental in Negros Island, Philippines. It is considered an ultra-prominent peak and can be seen as a conspicuous feature of Negros from a large part of Western Cebu.
Last March 28 to 30, 2014, we climbed this beautiful mountain. This was my third time to summit Mt. Kanlaon, but it was the first time for Sweetie and team-mates Apol Antenor, John Michael Gonzales, and Valkyrie Dumagan.
We arrived at the port of Toledo very early in the morning of March 28 at daybreak, around 5:30 AM. We didn’t want to miss the first fast craft trip out of Toledo, which, according to our research, supposedly departs at 6:00 AM. Well, we came in too early because the new schedule indicates that the first fast craft trip out of Toledo to San Carlos City is at 7:30AM, not 6:00 AM!
Well, it was a good thing though. The early bird gets the worm, and we got more than that. We were the first ones to get tickets, we had time to eat painit (a very light meal before breakfast) of puto maya (steamed rice cake) and sikwate (Filipino hot chocolate) and breakfast, and we had time to relax.
Across Tañon Street is the majestic Mt. Kanlaon, which, like an everlasting god, looks over Central Visayas. At 2,435 meters above sea level, Mt. Kanlaon is the highest mountain/volcano in Central Visayas. It is also one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines.
At 7:00 AM, we boarded our fast craft. Wait, is that it? It’s pretty small; check out the photo below and use the height of the crew member as reference. Amazingly, the small, fast boat can accommodate around a hundred passengers comfortably! We were ushered to the front of the craft, which is air-conditioned and very comfortable. A good omen for the climb, we should say.
We rode a tricycle to San Carlos City’s Bus Terminal to catch the Ceres bus to Canlaon City at the base of Mt. Kanlaon. However, when we arrived there, there were no buses to Canlaon City. According to the vendors, drivers, conductors, and terminal staff whom we talked to, the buses that normally ply the San Carlos City-to-Canlaon City routes have problems with their franchises. As a result, the route was temporarily halted.
There were still V-hires that ply the San Carlos City-to-Canlaon City route, but they take hours to fill up. There are also jeepneys (they call them Fieras) that ply the said route, but their “appearance” is sporadic.
Thankfully, a few days prior to our scheduled climb, our friends Sir Joel and Sir Jigz informed us of an alternative way: a bus ride to Barangay Bagawines and, after that, another bus ride to Canlaon City.
At 9:30 AM, we rode a comfortable, air-conditioned Dumaguete-bound bus that stops by Bagawines.
Along the way, we witnessed vast tracts of both newly harvested and newly planted farmland. Corn seems to be the crop of the season as they grow fast and can easily stand the summer heat.
Thirty minutes later, we arrived at the crossing of Bagawines, which is the gateway to Canlaon City. As soon as we got off the bus (and perhaps seeing our large mountaineering packs), habal-habal drivers hounded over us and offered to bring us to Canlaon City. The quoted prices, we believe, are too steep—P100 to P150 per person.
Fortunately, a kind tricycle driver agreed to a price of P400 (P80 per person) to bring us to Canlaon City. That was much more reasonable, but the best thing was that we were able to ride in comfort and safety in his big tricycle.
The long ride to Canlaon City was quite pleasant although we secretly pitied our vehicle. The tricycle had to groan and strain to climb the hilly slopes, but we were treated with breathtaking views along the way.
We arrived at Canlaon City at exactly 11:30 AM. It was such a surprise; we were walking towards the Canlaon Tourism Office when we spotted the friendly tourism office staff waved at us. It turned out that our contacts—Sir Jigz and Sir Laddie—had already arranged everything for this expedition, from transportation, accommodation, and elements of the climb itself!
We quickly introduced ourselves and had a short briefing with Sir Laddie, lead guide; Sir Steve Bolivar of the elite Canlaon Mountain Tigers Search and Rescue organization; and Sir Eduardo “TBong” Alipar, Mt. Kanlaon guide at the tourism office.
That’s our duly signed, fully completed climbing permit! Since Mt. Kanlaon sits in a protected natural park, it is actually illegal to climb Mt. Kanlaon without this officially issued climbing permit.
An excellent climb always starts with excellent food! We devoured a sumptuous lunch at the nearby, quaint Joring’s Café with our good friend Sir Jigz Santiago, former Mt. Kanlaon head guide and now a kagawad . His partner, April Marcial, a DepEd teacher, joined us a bit later.
After a filling lunch, we headed back to the Tourism Office to answer the call of nature, rest, and do last-minute preparations. Sweetie took time to watch a particularly interesting segment of a noontime show while I busied myself looking at photos of other attractions in Canlaon City that are worth a visit.
At exactly 1:00 PM, with the sun up high and searing the land, we were geared up and ready to undertake this year’s first major climb. The guy in yellow shirt with the Habagat cap is Sir TBong, a highly skilled mountain guide assigned to us.
Habal-habals , which have been previously arranged for us by the tourism office, took us to our jump-off point in the farmlands of Barangay Mapot at the foot of the mountain. It was a good thing that the road was paved and smoothed; a few years ago during my first climb up Mt. Kanlaon, the road to Mapot was terrible.
Huge expanses of rice terraces dominate the plain before a cloud-covered Mt. Kanlaon.
Welcome to Mapot Ranger Station, the standard jump-off point for most climbs up Mt. Kanlaon from Canlaon City. We reached the jump-off after 45 minutes of a comfortable ride on a habal-habal .
At the jump-off point, two other guides, Sir King Besario who wanted to climb with us after staying for some time in Manila, and Sir Arly Avila, a guide in training, joined us. As usual, we had a last-minute briefing and mumbled a short prayer for safety. Then it was time to climb Mt. Kanlaon!
From the very start, the Mapot trail involves a gentle but grueling, nonstop ascent towards the base camp, which is located a few kilometers away. We climbed on soft, mineral-rich soil that was part of a network of farm trails. Compounding the ascent was the fact that it was a very hot, humid, sweltering afternoon, and there was no shade available on the trail.
In just fifteen minutes, we were high above our jump-off point, which is a bit right beside that house with the green roof.
One of the most prominent features that can be seen is the Bao-bao hill, so named because it is shaped like a turtle’s shell; the English translation for bao is “turtle.” Sir Tbong said that decades ago, Bao-bao was covered with first-growth forest. As years went by, farm fields encroached the hill.
The climb was tiresome, but it was also a great opportunity for us to experience snippets of farm life, an important component of which is the small population of very friendly residents. For example, as we passed by this house, the lady of the house (the woman in orange) warmly invited us for a cup of hot sikwate even though she didn’t know us from Adam! Talk about the world-renowned Filipino values of warmth and hospitality! Of course, we politely declined.
Cows freely roam around the fields; this one was blocking the trail before I took the photo.
Farm terraces are prominent at the hills and slopes around the lower part of Mt. Kanlaon. Terracing is a technique wherein a series of successively receding platforms or flat surfaces are cut into an inclined piece of land, such as the slope of a hill or mountain. Resembling giant steps, terraces decrease erosion, lessen surface runoff, support crops that require irrigation, and permit more effective farming.
As you can see from the vantage point of the photo below, the inclined trail is unending and merciless. We sweated, grunted, and panted as we struggled to combat heat, exhaustion, and sore legs while carrying a full load of food, supplies, and camping equipment behind our backs.
Whew! A 15-minute rest on top of a hill can be a huge surge of relief!
I think everyone shared the same sentiment; we were absolutely grateful and happy for the short break. Sir TBong offered slices of fresh pineapples so we can regain our physical body’s energy.
Before long, the break was over, and we felt a new flow of energy as our bodies adjusted to the climbing conditions. We walked a little faster, stronger, longer. We crested higher hills. Terraces and manicured farms became fewer and cruder; signs of agriculture gradually faded as we approached the mountain’s treeline.
We passed by the last house before our base camp and the treeline. During my first climb here, we camped at a flat, grassy field beside the house. This time, however, that field was tilled and planted with crops, prompting Mt. Kanlaon guides to move the base camp higher.
That’s a beautiful, unspoiled limestone cliff right beyond the edge of the farmlands. Bouldering, anyone?
Beyond that hill is our base camp. Check out the photo below; you can see that the treeline is quite near.
That’s a really muddy trail that we had to walk on before reaching the Mapot base camp. Look at the photo below; you can just imagine the thickness of the mud and how difficult it is to walk on that trail during rainy season. Good thing we planned this climb during the hot, dry, summer season.
See those thin trees beside and behind Sir Arly? Sir Arly explained that they replanted these trees to hopefully grow a second-generation forest. Agricultural encroachment has moved the treeline farther up the mountain, worrying the Canlaon Tourism Office. Concerned with the environmental damage, the Office worked with the Department of Energy and Natural Resource to plant new trees in an attempt to halt—or possibly reverse—human encroachment.
After three hours of a merciless, grueling climb, we finally reached the Mapot base camp! Congratulations! At last, we can now have a well-deserved sound rest after a sleepless night and a tough climb.
After a short rest, we assembled our tents and set up camp.
That’s our camp. This is actually an almost perfect camp: the grassy ground is almost level, and there is a water source nearby where we can get fresh, potable water. The surrounding verdant mountain protected us from high winds while in front of us is a spectacular view of the lowlands.
Speaking of the view, just check out that astonishing vista! Way below us are checkered fields, specs of human establishments, distant hills and mountains, and the serene Tañon Strait. Being treated to vistas like this is rare, and the opportunity should be treasured.
While there was still light available, we set up our equipment and ingredients so we can cook our dinner and turn in early.
Everyone was busy preparing something! Mmmm! Things definitely smelled great here as aromas of fried garlic and onions filled the air. The sizzle of something being pan-fried and the pleasant sound of bubbling boiling water made us squirt saliva in our mouths.
Want to know our contribution to dinner? It’s Sweetie’s own yummy version of chopsuey with quail eggs.
Who said that mountain meals are limited to bland and boring canned goods, and ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook meals? With a little planning, we can prepare a feast out there!
Dinnertime! Attack! Sir Tbong and the rest of the guides could only shake their heads in amazement. They later gleefully remarked that this was not a normal “mountain meal.” It’s a fiesta out here! They laughed as they realized why our bags were heavy; they were filled with ingredients for sumptuous meals! We brought and prepared excellent food, which definitely increases morale, energy, and positive feelings during an arduous climb.
It was a good thing we had our dinner early. By 5:00 PM, a thick fog started rolling in the campsite. The light got dimmer as the sun started to say goodbye.
The temperature rapidly dropped, and the air became uncomfortably cold. At around 5:30 PM, Val announced that the air around us was 18 degrees Celsius and still dropping. Everyone changed into cold-weather gear to ward off the biting chill.
Goodbye, sun, and thank you for being good to us today. It was time for a good night’s sleep. We have completed the arduous first leg of our first major climb this year, and it was definitely fun! Everything was readily arranged for us, we were part of a strong team, and we were in the hands of the best guides. We started the climb right, and we were definitely excited for the morrow.
Trek to Part 2 of this adventure.
The itinerary, budget, and other important information about the climb proper are in subsequent posts. What we will put here in our Tips section is information to complete the most crucial elements of the adventure, the filing and processing of your climbing permits.
1. Before climbing Mt. Kanlaon, you need to secure a climbing permit . The official permit consists of three documents: 1) an individual’s climbing permit, 2) a group permit, and 3) a waiver. We have copies of these documents, so Contact Us or send us an email at [email protected] so we can send them to you electronically. Print them out and fill them completely.
Important! Do not forget to include your contact details. The Canlaon Tourism Office will regularly update you of the status of your permit, and they won’t be able to do so if you don’t put your contact details.
2. In the permit, indicate which mountain trail you want to use. Presently, there are four official and established trails to choose from:
- Mapot (Canlaon City, Negros Oriental side)
- Mananawin (Canlaon City, Negros Oriental side)
- Guintubdan (Murcia, Negros Occidental side)
- Wasay (Murcia, Negros Occidental side)
During this climb, we took the Mapot-Mananawin trail, with Mapot as our entry point and Mananawin as our exit point. Contact the Canlaon Tourism Office for more information and advice about the mountain’s trails.
3. For more information, reservations, and other queries, please contact the officers the Canlaon Tourism Office. Use the following contact details:
- Street Address: Canlaon City Tourism Office, Brgy. Mabigo, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, Philippines
- Phone numbers: (034) 433-3813: (034) 707-5484
- Cellphone Number: 0917-3125274
- Contact Person: Mr. Laddie Lamis (0928-6384322)
- Email: [email protected]
4. The most important document in this set is the waiver, which you need to have notarized. Ensure that each team member’s waiver sheets are stamped and notarized by a licensed lawyer before you send them to Canlaon City’s Tourism Office. The Office won’t process your permit without the notarized permits.
5. Send your documents to this address:
Mr. Laddie Lamis Head Guide c/o Canlaon City Tourism Office, Brgy. Mabigo, Canlaon City Negros Oriental, Philippines
6. Please find below the necessary fees you need to pay. Except for the processing fee, all permit fees should be paid individually .
- P 500 – permit fee for locals and citizens
- P 1,000 – permit fee for foreigners
- P 200 – processing fee (this is a per-group fee, not an individual fee)
7. For your payment, go to a Palawan Pera Padala branch near you. Send your payment for permits and processing fee to Mr. Laddie Lamis (0928-6384322) .
8. Many climbers line up for a slot to climb this glorious mountain. To ensure your team’s slot, it is best to send and have your permits processed at least a month before your actual climb schedule.
In case your climb is cancelled due to uncontrollable circumstances such as bad weather, natural disasters, administrative orders, etc., your permit is still valid for 1 month. Thus, your climb can be rescheduled; just contact the Canlaon Tourism Office for rescheduling. The Canlaon Tourism Office will contact you in case of a mandatory cancellation of a climb.
Note, however, that the 1-month validity does not apply for voluntary cancellation . For instance, if you cancel your confirmed climb because some of your friends backed out, you cannot avail of the 1-month validity. You need to re-apply for a new permit even if your new schedule is well within 1 month from your cancelled schedule. 8. For guide and porter fees, please check the information below.
- Guide – Php 750 per day (guide ratio is 1 guide per 6 climbers)
- Porter – Php 500 per day
9. To preserve the trails and to avoid overcrowding the mountain, strict measures as to how many people at a time can use any single trail are implemented by the Canlaon City Office. Thus, expect a split-up of team members if you belong to a large group.
10. For safety and security of your team (especially if it’s a large one), the Office will require a number of skilled guides and/or porters to accompany you on the mountain.
- 6 climbers or fewer – 1 guide
- 1 to 10 climbers – 1 guide and 1 porter
- 10 or more climbers – 2 guides
- For budget planning, related expenses, and itinerary , please check Part 2 .

This is an awesome write up about a very awesome adventure. Congrats and thank you Sir Gian and Ate Sheila for letting us share this with you! The whole experience was certainly extra-ordinary and unforgettable. Yes, Ate Sheila, the 360 degrees picture-perfect views from the peak, truly awesome!
Hi Crunchy Apol,
Thank you! It was really an awesome climb! We’ll do this again next year using another combination of trails. 🙂
Can’t wait to read the next chapter of this adventure tale…
Hehehe! We’re making it now. 🙂
As usual, your blog takes me with you up there. Can’t wait for Part Deux 🙂
Hi Dada Longlegs,
Thank you! We’re glad to know that even though you were not physically there with us, we were able to take you to a great journey through our blog post.
Part 2 is coming very soon!
Eagerly waiting for part 2. The trail badly need some trees for shade. If more trees are planted, will the settlers chop down the trees for firewood? Hopefully not. 🙂
Thank you! Part 2 will be coming soon. 🙂
The trail does need a few trees, especially at the first few kilometers of the Mapot trail. However, right after the base camp; the treeline begins and the forest is still pretty thick.
Firewood is not really a problem; the mountain is perennially wet. And most of the settlers there have modern cooking conveniences such as gas stoves.
The real problem is agricultural encroachment. Even if the area is declared protected, farms are slowly eating up the forest, pushing the treeline farther up the mountain. Although we are sure that the encroachment won’t push the forest even midway up the mountain, Canlaon’s Tourism Office, LGU, and DENR should make prudent efforts to educate farmers about sustainable farming and environmental protection.
I totally agree with you. Denuded forests are environmental disasters. I won’t discuss about repercussions but let us hope for the best, hope that the powers that be will do the right thing and protect what’s left of beautiful Mt. Kanlaon.
That’s correct.
hi. i have a ticket to dumaguete next month and wish to climb this glorious mountain. lalo akong na excite after reading your blog. the pictures of nature are awesome and the food, was truly gatronomical! ang sarap nyo siguro kasama, for that reason, among others, hahaha! i notice or baka malabo lang mata ko, i did not read/see the tourism office’s email address? san dapat ipa notarized ung waiver, dito sa kin or pwede na dun sa office nila? what do you think is the easiest trail? thanks for your reply.
We’re very happy to know that our blog about our Mt. Kanlaon climb inspired you. We can truly say that the mountain is one of the country’s most precious eco-tourism, adventuring, hiking, and mountaineering gems.
Hehehe! We’re sticklers for good food! We believe that great food tastes even better up there in the wilderness. It would be a waste if we didn’t bring great food each time we climb.
Regarding your questions:
1) Unfortunately, we don’t have info on Canlaon City Tourism Office’s e-mail address. That is one thing we overlooked. Now that you mentioned it, we are getting in touch with our contacts there so we can obtain their email address.
In the meantime, use the contact details in this post; specifically, send a text message or call Sir Laddie Lamis for inquiries and information.
2. To process your permit, the Office needs a notarized waiver, so have your waiver notarized at your end and send it along with your permits BEFORE you go to Canlaon City. You will save yourself a headache if you accomplish the permit processing BEFORE actually going to Canlaon City.
3. There are four official trails in Mt. Kanlaon as described above. Each has its own features and challenges, so we can’t really say which is the easiest or which is the most difficult.
In this climb, since we entered through Canlaon City, we took the Mapot trail, which consists of a steep ascent through forested areas. We exited the mountain via Mananawin trail, which consists of a long, knee-busting downhill trek on exposed grasslands. You can follow our itinerary or do the reverse (i.e. climbing Mananawin and exiting through Mapot).
The other two trails are in the Occidental side, which entails a long traverse if you’re starting from Canlaon City.
Lastly, you’re in luck since you’ll be starting in Dumaguete. To go to Canlaon City, simply ride a Canlaon-bound bus from Dumaguete; it goes straight to the Canlaon City bus terminal. 🙂
Hope this helps! 🙂
Absolutely inspiring and informative! Reading this almost felt like being part of the adventure 🙂 Thank you! We are planning to climb this great mountain this September – May God keep us safe and bless us with balmy weather!
Thank you for the kind and complimentary words. Readers like you inspire us to visit more of the Philippines’ wonders and take on more exciting adventures.
September is still rainy season with periodical clearing. If you have the capability, please do check the weather during that month so you can have a safe climb and you will be rewarded with a clear view of the crater and Margaha Valley.

If you are in Negros Island and want to experience some cooler climate, visit Canlaon City (sometimes spelled as Kanlaon). Canlaon City is a 4 th class City in the Province of Negros Oriental . The place is known as the vegetable basket of Negros Island. Their agricultural harvests are being supplied in the entire Negros Island Region and other neighboring provinces.
The city is located 9.5 Km from the foot of Mt. Kanlaon, which is why some mountain climbers normally visit the city as their jump-off point.
WHAT TO DO WHEN IN CANLAON CITY
CLIMB MT. KANLAON
Canlaon City is home to the highest peak in Negros island, the Mt. Kanlaon. Mt. Kanlaon stands 8,087 ft above sea level. It is one of the active volcanoes in the country and is included in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This beautiful spot is a favorite destination of the mountain climbers. BUY FRESH VEGETABLE AT UPTOWN MARKET
I really enjoyed buying some vegetables from the sellers at a very low cost ( Canlaon City Tourist Attractions | Pension Houses )
Uptown Market is the place where farmers bring their produce and meet some middlemen to buy their products. On our last visit, we were able to buy a lot of vegetables at a very low cost. Vegetables that they considered “rejects” are those items that fall below the standard size, color, etc. These items are normally sold at almost giveaway prices.
VISIT THE 1,328+ YEARS OLD BALETE TREE
Botanists from the Siliman University had estimated the Balete Tree standing inside the OISCA Farm to be around 1,328+ years old. The huge trunk of the tree would require 38 men to encircle it.
Address: Brgy Lumapao, Canlaon City, 6223 Negros Oriental

when inside the OISCA Farm, you would know that you are nearing the site of the old Balete tree the moment you pass by these eucalyptus trees beautifully lined along the road.
The area around the Balete Tree is ready with these cottages for those who would want to stay for a while. During summertime, many campers would spend a night around the tree. Should you wish to go camping in this place, don’t forget to bring your rechargeable light and your own tent.
There are families taking care of the place, you can also buy some native chicken from these folks and they will also cook for you. They also sell a few snack items and some freshly harvested vegetables. The place also has restrooms.
TAKE A PLUNGE AT INLAND RESORT

SUDLON FALLS AND QUIPOT FALLS
Canlaon City has many waterfalls. Most of which are difficult to reach. Two of the most popular falls found in the place are the Sudlon and Quipot Falls.
Sudlon is a Visayan word which means to get inside. Sudlon Falls is located in the Northeastern portion of Mt. Kanlaon at Sitio Gaboc, Brgy. Malaiba, approximately 6 km. from the city proper.
Quipot Falls is located just 5 kilometers from the Canlaon City proper. The waterfall is covered with tropical plants and trees.
AGRICULTURAL PLANTATIONS
The economic activities in the city revolved around agriculture. While visiting the Canlaon, you will surely be refreshed seeing wide plantations of various vegetables, rice, and corn.

Canlaon is Philippines’ Largest Active Volcano
Canlaon / kanlaon volcano.
The majestic Mount Kanlaon rises on the border of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. This is the highest mountain of the Negros as well as of the entire Visayas. It is the largest active Philippine volcano, and its activity is monitored often.
It is 2,465 m high at its peak, although some sources mention the height to be 2,435 m. Its base measures 30 km in diameter and extinct volcanic craters and pyroclastic cones dot its north-northwest region. The Lugud crater, which is active, is just north of and below the summit. There is a small caldera, known as the Margaja Valley, to the north of Lugud. In some seasons, such as the monsoon, it becomes a crater lake. Kanlaon , also spelled as Kanla-on or sometimes Canlaon, is an active stratovolcano on the island of Negros, Philippines. It is the highest point in Negros, as well as the whole Visayas, with an elevation of 2,465 m (8,087 ft) above sea level.
The volcano straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, approximately 30 km (19 mi) southeast of Bacolod, the capital and most populous city of Negros Occidental and of the whole island region. It is one of the active volcanoes in the Philippines and part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
Kanlaon has a peak elevation of 2,465 m (8,087 ft) at its highest point, although it is 2,435 m (7,989 ft) in some sources, with a base diameter of 30 km (19 mi) and is dotted with pyroclastic cones and extinct craters lining to the north-northwest. Just below and north of the summit is the active Lugud crater. North of Lugud is a 2 by 0.8 km (1.24 by 0.50 mi) caldera known as Margaja Valley, with a small, often seasonal crater lake.
The volcano has three hot springs on its slopes: Mambukal Hot Springs on the northwest, Bucalan Hot Spring and Bungol Hot Spring. Its adjacent volcanic edifices are Mount Silay and Mount Mandalagan, north of Kanlaon. Read More: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanlaon

This is our very own version of the Kennon Road in Baguio . This road takes you through a scenic view of the ocean and the mesmerizing blue waters of Tañon Straight and the whole Island of Cebu. As you progress your drive up the road, the houses situated between numerous corn fields become a view worthy of a camera snap. Inayawan Enchanted Falls This is a fitting location for a summer escapade because of its flowing cool waters cascading from the Inawayan River to the Masaulog River.
