Although it may not be widely known among tourists, it stands as one of the largest mosques in the UAE and welcomes all visitors during non-prayer times. The Grand Mosque of Bur Dubai – located opposite the Dubai Museum – is also open to non-Muslim visitors (free of charge, with tours at 9:30 from Sunday to Thursday), as is the beautiful Mohammed Bin Ahmed Al Mulla Mosque in Dubai Marina .

Other interesting mosques can only be visited externally, such as the Al Salam Mosque and the beautiful Imam Hussein Mosque , also known as the Iranian Mosque (which is sometimes open for visits, just ask on-site). There are also a couple of contemporary architecture mosques that can be admired from the outside and sometimes allow tourists to take a peek inside. A significant financial center in the emirate is the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), and the DIFC Grand Mosque is equally well-known. It features a separate women’s prayer section and can hold 500 attendees. It was designed by renowned firm RMJM. This mosque’s combination of traditional and modern design may be what sets it apart. Mashrabiya’s Islamic architecture style and contemporary design coexist in perfect harmony.

11. Madinat Badr Masjid

Madinat Badr Masjid is a recent addition to the list of the most magnificent mosques in Dubai. The mosque, a part of the Madinat Badr development in Muhaisnah owned by the Dubai Islamic Bank, has space for up to 1,600 worshippers.

The Alhambra Palace’s Spanish-style architecture inspired the mosque’s design. Terracotta tiles, a colonnaded courtyard, Moorish arches, planted gardens, and a slanted roof may all be seen there.

1)      Jumeriah Mosque

The mosque was built entirely from white stone in the ancient Fatimid style, with towering twin minarets framing a large central dome, it is large enough to accommodate over 1,200 worshipers. The intricate craftsmanship and beauty are brought to light when it is lit up at dusk. The architectural style was influenced by Syria and Egypt, and the mosque serves as a poignant reminder of those countries' shared heritage and history.

Jumeirah Grand Mosque, which was inaugurated in 1979, was given as a gift by the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the former ruler of Dubai and the father of the current ruler, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Adopting an 'Open Doors, Open Minds' policy, local mosque representatives are on hand six days a week at 10 a.m. to conduct 75-minute guided tours. Visitors have the chance to learn more about the Emirati way of life and religion on these tours, which are led by the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU). 2)      Bur Dubai Grand Masjid

The Bur Dubai Grand Mosque is one of Dubai's most notable places of worship. This beautiful mosque in Dubai is one of the largest in the city and the most recognizable structure in the area. The mosque, which is located in the heritage district, can accommodate 1,200 worshippers. The sandy-grey walls are artless in general, but a large Quranic inscription is inlaid above the five columns of the entrance facade, which sit at the top of a short flight of six steps. The roof of the Grand Mosque is covered by 45 small and nine larger domes, as well as a tall minaret. The mosque's minaret is also the tallest in Dubai, standing at 70 meters (230ft).

The building has a long history, and it was once a school, or 'kuttab,' dedicated to the study of the Quran. The first students came in 1900 and memorized the Quran by heart. A new mosque was built in 1960, and it was rebuilt in 1998 to match the original architecture. Tourists can participate in the Mosque Experience, which aims to raise awareness of Islamic and Arabic culture. 3)      Al Salam Mosque

Al Salam Mosque, located in Al Barsha behind the Mall of the Emirates, is one of the most beautiful masjids in Dubai, a city rich in Islamic heritage and culture. It was built in 2014 and is a popular place of worship, with a capacity of 1,500 worshippers. The building is built to resemble a pyramid, and as you get closer you can find the shahada, the most important pillar of Islam, written along the entrance, which sets the structure apart from the crowd. Its stunning red architecture was influenced by old Turkish buildings, resulting in a mix of Ottoman and Emirati culture and design. White accents can also be found on the outside, as well as gold domes and balconies on the minarets. The mosque is especially gorgeous when the sun goes down, with green and gold lights. The mosque is a tranquil setting with beautiful lighting for some quiet time and religious reflection.

4)      Masjid Al Rahim

The Masjid Al Rahim is located on the banks of the Dubai Marina. This is Dubai Marina's only mosque, which opened in 2013.  It has a capacity of 2,000 people. 5)      DIFC Grand Mosque

This contemporary mosque is a fusion of traditional Islamic architecture and contemporary design, and it is located at Gate Avenue in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). The mosque, which can accommodate 500 worshipers, pays homage to tradition with a hanging Mashrabiya, a perforated metal screen that filters light during the day and transforms the structure into an urban lantern at night. It combines modern and traditional design elements. It completes the row of buildings on Gate Avenue's promenade and has a gross floor area of 14,500 square feet. It is open 24 hours a day to serve all five daily prayer times, Friday prayers, and Ramadan prayers.

6)      Al Farooq Omar Bin Khattab Mosque

Al Farooq Omar bin Khattab Mosque, which was constructed in 1986, is yet another well-known mosque in Dubai. The building of this mosque was inspired by the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. Consequently, the Al Farooq Omar bin Khattab Mosque is also referred to as the Blue Mosque. With some noticeable Turkish influences, including the blue-tiled floors, the 21 stained-glass windows, and the traditional Turkish fountain in its grounds, it has also set itself apart from other mosques in Dubai. The mosque is exquisitely decorated, but in comparison to other mosques of this size in Dubai, it might appear "simple." The mosque's straightforward Bedouin Emirati architecture significantly reduced cost and energy, so this is also for the mosque to continue being as environmentally friendly as possible.

8)      Mosque of Light

The Jumeirah Mosque stands as the largest mosque in Dubai and is also hailed as one of the most beautiful in the United Arab Emirates. Particularly enchanting in the evening when illuminated, the mosque exudes a magical aura. It’s no wonder that the Jumeirah Mosque ranks among Dubai’s top tourist attractions, drawing visitors who often capture its beauty through photography and frequent visits.

Constructed with modern Islamic architecture, the mosque features two towering minarets reaching a height of seventy meters each, accentuating its distinctive ivory-colored sandstone walls. Inside, the Jumeirah Mosque boasts intricate adornments with chandeliers, plasterwork, and vibrant embellishments. The Jumeirah Mosque gives  space for prayers for up to 1200 worshipers at a time.

In contrast to other mosques in Dubai, the Jumeirah Mosque welcomes non-Muslim visitors. Daily guided tours, except on Fridays, offer an opportunity to explore the mosque for a nominal fee of 10 AED. Conducted in English, the 75-minute tour commences promptly at 10:00 AM, organized by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. This organization aims to educate non-Muslims about Islam and its traditions.

During the tour, visitors delve into the mosque’s architecture, learn about Islamic principles, prayer rituals, the way of life according to the faith, and the five pillars of Islam. Embracing the motto “Open doors. Open minds,” participants are encouraged to ask questions about the mosque and the Islamic faith, which the guide gladly answers. Photography is permitted during the tour.

While reservations for the tour are not necessary, visitors should assemble at the main entrance of the Jumeirah Mosque by 9:45 AM. Children under five years old are not permitted on the tours. It’s essential to dress modestly when entering the mosque, meaning no bare arms or legs, with women required to wear a headscarf. If visitors lack appropriate attire, they can borrow a headscarf and abaya (cloak) free of charge during the tour. Additionally, shoes must be removed upon entering the mosque and can be stored in designated lockers provided at the entrance.

Situated in the older part of Dubai in the Jumeirah 1 district, along Jumeirah Beach Road near the new Pearl Jumeirah Island, the Jumeirah Mosque is easily accessible. Unfortunately, there’s no nearby metro station; the nearest one is World Trade Center, which requires a 20-minute walk to reach the mosque. Alternatively, visitors can take a taxi from the metro station, a journey of approximately 12 minutes. For those using public transportation, buses such as RTA bus lines 8, 9, and X28 stop in the vicinity of the mosque.

1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Built over a 12-year period and opened in 2007, this is not only a grand house of worship, but a global cultural attraction.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque can accommodate up to 40,000 people.

Free guided tours are available on all days, although times may vary.

2. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan Mosque

Located in Hameem Street in Al Nahyan, this house of worship is located within a residential neighbourhood.

Inspired by Moroccan architecture, it has a tiled outdoor space and the front entrance features arches and lanterns.

3. Al Aziz Mosque

This is the neighbourhood mosque on Reem Island.

It has a contemporary design and spread across three levels - it also has a women's prayer hall.

4. Mary, Mother of Jesus Mosque

The mosque exemplifies the UAE's status as a country of religious tolerance.

Located in Al Mushrif, it shares the same car park with adjoining Anglican church of St Andrew’s, the Roman Catholic Church of St Joseph and the Coptic Church of St Antonio’s.

5. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque

Opened in 2021 and with a capacity of more than 20,000, this is the largest mosque in Al Ain.

Inspired by the Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq, it has four minarets and a grand dome adorned with verses from the Quran.

6. Jumeirah Mosque

A landmark of the emirate, this beautiful mosque is located near Jumeirah Beach with an exterior built from pink sandstone and multicoloured marble.

7. Bur Dubai Grand Mosque

Formerly a Quran school that dates back to 1900, the structure was demolished and reconstructed in 1960 as a mosque. It is located near the Dubai Museum and the textile districts of Bur Dubai.

Home to 1,200 worshippers, it also has the highest minaret in Dubai, measuring 70 metres.

8. Al Rahim Mosque

A landmark of Dubai Marina, the mosque opened in 2013. It is regularly visited by residents, and features spacious prayer halls for men and women.

9. Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque

A fully operational house of worship and cultural attraction, the site also hosts activities and lectures.

Tours are conducted from Sundays to Thursdays and can be booked online.

10. DIFC Grand Mosque

A spiritual gathering place for those in the Dubai International Financial Centre, the modern house of worship is located in Gate Village.

Accommodating 500 worshippers, the mosque also has a dedicated women's prayer hall.

11. Al Noor Mosque

A Sharjah landmark, the mosque has a commanding place on the emirate's Corniche and is inspired by the Blue Mosque in Turkey.

Free tours, which focus on Islamic and Emirati history, are available on Monday and Thursdays from 10am without prior booking.

12. Sharjah Mosque

Opened in 2019 and inspired by Ottoman architecture, the mosque is one of the UAE's biggest and can hold up to 25,000 people.

As well as the daily prayers, the mosque has a library of Islamic texts, a souvenir shop and a walking track stretching around the 185,806 square metres complex.

13. King Faisal Mosque

Named after the former King of Saudi Arabia and located in Al Soor, the King Faisal Mosque is one of the emirate's largest with a capacity for more than 16,000 worshippers.

14. Al Sakina Mosque

Featuring contemporary Islamic architectural motifs, the eye-catching Al Sakina Mosque is at the heart of the Al Rahmaniyah 4 neighbourhood and can host 900 worshippers.

15. Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Located on the suburban outskirts, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque is an Ajman landmark with its sprawling courtyard and prayer hall that can fit 2,500 people.

During Ramadan, the mosque is known to host some of the Muslim world's best Quran prayer reciters.

Made from local stone and mudbrick, it is located on a hillside about 30 kilometres north of Fujairah City.

20. Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Second in size to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, this spectacular site was opened in 2015 and located on Mohammed bin Matar Road in Fujairah City.

With a slight resemblance to the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, it can hold up to 28,000 people and has a courtyard with fountains and gardens.

This mosque, one of the most exquisite monuments ever constructed in this Emirate, towers over the Corniche along the shore. with 34 cascading domes and Turkish Ottoman architecture inspiration. 

The Sharjah Ruler’s wife, Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, gave the order for this mosque’s construction to be finished in 2005. In the mosque, there is a distinct women’s area with space for 400 women at once. 

The largest wooden charity box in the world record was made at this lovely mosque in 2014 as part of their Ramadan donation drive. It was filed into the Guinness World Records.

How to reach Al Noor Mosque Sharjah

From Sharjah, you can either take a taxi or a bus to the Al Noor Mosque. The taxi costs between AED 80 to AED 120 and the bus costs AED 20 which is more cheapest than the taxi. You can ride bus E307 from the Deira City Centre Bus Station to Jumbo – Sharjah.

T he most tourist-friendly destination of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai continues to attract and enthrall visitors from around the world.

The sprawling desert metropolis is known for its luxury hotels, duty-free shopping and general glitz and glamour, but it offers a far wider scope of activities and attractions than its reputation suggests.

A picture of ultra-modern architecture, soaring skyscrapers and the blue waters of the Persian Gulf, the city (and emirate) also possesses several well-preserved local sites and attractions of historic and cultural significance, from the Jumeirah Mosque to Alserkal Avenue.

This makes for a city with an abundance and wide-ranging variety of things to do; whether you want to explore historic districts, wander the world’s largest mall or have dinner in the desert, Dubai should have something to catch your attention.

So whether you’ve already booked your trip or are still caught in two minds, fear not; we’ve rounded up a list of some of the best things to do in Dubai.

Visit the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Fountain and Marina

The world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa is a modern symbol of Dubai and one of its most visited sites. Standing at 830 metres tall, anyone can visit the observation deck, named ‘At The Top’, on the 124th floor of the building (and at a height of 452 metres) for a panoramic view of the city and its marina.

At the foot of the building lies the Burj Khalifa lake, a 30-acre artificial lake that is mostly known as the home of the Dubai Fountain. This 270-metre tall fountain is the tallest performing fountain in the world, with light shows consisting of over 6,000 lights dancing to different songs, ranging from classical Arab to contemporary world pop. These two structures are perhaps the highlights of the Dubai Marina, a man-made marina with a waterside promenade, its own mall and dozens of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Discover the city’s Old Town

Away from the malls and skyscrapers, you’ll find Dubai’s characterful ‘Old Town’. Traditional buildings, local markets and cultural centres are the draw here, with several of the city’s best districts contained within the area. There’s nowhere better to start than Al Fahidi, a historic neighbourhood where gypsum buildings and wind towers have been restored to provide a contrasting reminder of the city’s old skyline. The Al Fahidi Fort is the oldest building in Dubai – built in 1871 – while the Centre for Cultural Understanding provides opportunities for visitors to learn about Emirati culture. Other notable sites in the area include the city’s Coffee Museum and the Arabian Tea House, a highly rated cafe serving traditional Emirati cuisine.

Al Seef, along the Dubai Creek waterside, is a blend of the old and new, where more gypsum buildings and narrow, winding streets meet more modern buildings and a background of skyscrapers. Across the Creek lies Deira, a district renowned for its traditional souks (more on them later).

Visit the Jumeirah Mosque

Built in a Fatimid style (a mix of Syrian and Egyptian architectural styles characterised by keel-shaped arches, columns and ornamentation among other things), the Jumeirah Mosque opened in 1979 and can accommodate 1,500 worshippers. Easily recognisable with its two towering minarets, it is one of the only mosques in the UAE that is open to non-Muslims (and the general public) and has guided visits and opportunities to learn about Islam, its customs and history. The mosque is open every day other than Friday; be sure to adhere to dress codes, although the website does say that Kandooras (Emirati national dress for men), Abayas (national dress for women) and Sheilas (head scarves) are available to borrow.

Sail across Dubai Creek

The location where many of the first settlers made their home – and an early port – Dubai Creek lies at the heart of the city. Separating the Deira area from Bur Dubai, it is now a popular tourist attraction for the boats – named abras – that you can travel across the water in for just 1 AED (around 21p). There are two routes across; the first is from Deira Old Souk Abra Station to Bur Dubai, while the second, busier route goes from Al Sabkha to Dubai Old Souk. Each crossing takes around five minutes, giving travellers exceptional views of both the old and new parts of the city.

Go shopping in the world’s largest mall

Situated next to the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping mall, with over 1,200 shops covering over half-a-million square metres. Visitors can expect anything from luxury stores to well-known international brands and American department stores, with over 200 different places to eat once you’re done shopping. For kids, the mall even houses an aquarium, ‘underwater zoo’ and go kart track, while the entire area is mercifully air conditioned in the summer months.

Go on a desert safari (or have a romantic desert dinner)

Several companies offer excursions into the desert surrounding Dubai, from camel riding and barbecue buffets to quad biking and overnight stays in tents. Spending a day rolling across the golden dunes offers an adventurous alternative to strolling around malls, whether you choose to go on a leisurely drive, dune buggy over the sands or visit conservation reserves to see flora and fauna. As night falls, visitors can watch the sunset while enjoying an unforgettable lamp-lit meal among the dunes. Combine this with an overnight stay to really experience the best of what Dubai’s desert has to offer.

Explore the souks

Dubai’s souks are a legendary form of traditional Arab market. Some of them are among the most well-known attractions in Dubai, selling an enticing range of products, from spice mixes to gold and hand-woven local crafts. Many of these are housed in the aforementioned Deira district (some stops for the abras are named after them), including the Gold Souk, Spice Souk and Perfume Souk.

The Gold Souk is arguably Dubai’s most famous market, a beacon for those in search of gold, silver and fine jewellery, while the Spice Souk offers, as you’d expect, a colourful array of spices and dried herbs. The Textile Souk (found across the Creek in Bur Dubai) is a network of covered alleyways offering clothing, shawls and souvenirs made from fabrics including silk, wool and cashmere.

There are also a handful of modern souks, built to provide a different shopping experience. The Madinat Jumeirah is prime among them; part of the Madinat Jumeirah resort, it was built to mirror the traditional aspects and architecture of a souk but also offers galleries, restaurants and shops. The Ripe Markets – Dubai’s take on farmer’s markets – run in different locations around the city, with street stalls and boutiques selling organic foods and fresh produce.

Head to the beach

Beaches may not be the first thing that springs to mind when thinking about Dubai, but with the weather sometimes sweltering, you may well appreciate a dip in the sea. The hundreds of miles of beaches here range from free-to-access stretches to exclusive beach clubs.

JBR beach is the city’s busiest – a long stretch of golden sand with a backdrop of the city’s skyscrapers and the Ain wheel – while Jumeirah Open Beach is a more relaxed alternative. Kite Beach is another free-access area, an eight-mile stretch of white sand that is also a trendy area for pop-up shops, food trucks and cafes. For a tranquil spot, try Sunset Beach; the city’s only decent surfing beach, it offers great sunset vistas and a particularly enviable view of the Burj Al Arab.

Beach clubs are common too, for those looking to up the glam factor. Nikki Beach has a location in Dubai, while other reputed clubs include Azure Beach, DRIFT and Riva. Most clubs have pools and served a range of food, with entry prices ranging from around £15 to over £65.

Learn about the UAE at the Etihad Museum

Open since 2016, the Etihad Museum showcases contemporary Emirati history at the site where the UAE was founded in 1971. The museum’s eight pavilions hold a range of artefacts and interactive guides, from personal possessions of the rulers to the first written version of the country’s constitution. Other exhibitions focus on pictures of the developing nation, documentaries, interactive maps and a homage to the important moments before 1971.

Tickets for the museum cost roughly £5, and it’s recommended to spend at least an hour there to have a good nose around. Last ticket sales are at 7pm ahead of an 8pm closing time.

Go on an adventure in Hatta

If you care to venture beyond the desert, you’ll find the mountainous Hatta region. Located in the Hajar mountains (roughly 80 miles from the city itself), the region contains a Heritage Village, a centuries-old restored village that retains its defensive tower, stone houses and traditional falaj water system. Dramatic mountains offer scenic hiking and mountain biking opportunities, while canoeing, kayaking and boat rides are available on the emerald lakes (such as the one by Hatta Dam).

Take in the culture of Alserkal Avenue

Though the grey and blue warehouses of Alserkal (in the Al Quoz district) may not look too inspiring from the outside, in reality these buildings house dozens of art galleries, cafes and shops. The city’s artistic hub, Alserkal offers myriad surprises for visitors, whether stumbling across an independent records shop (The Flip Side) or watching indie films at Cinema Akil.

Popular galleries include the Green Art gallery, 1X1 and Carbon 12, while creative spaces such as Kave: The Story of Things host workshops including guitar making and embroidery. Food options, meanwhile, range from vegan tacos to handmade Belgian chocolate.

Get golfing

Golf in Dubai caters for everyone, from seasoned golf travellers to total amateurs, with activities ranging from championship courses to Top Golf driving ranges. The city plays host to several professional tournaments, and its climate offers the perfect weather for getting out onto the greens (when summer temperatures soar to unbearable heights, many courses offer the opportunity to play at night under floodlights).

Regardless of level, the opportunity to play surrounded by sea, sun and skyscrapers is not one to be missed. Some of the city’s premier courses include the Trump International, Dubai Creek, Emirates Golf Club and Jumeirah Golf Estates, with green fees anywhere between £20 to £175.

Visit a theme park

Dubai has a whole host of theme parks and waterparks to keep kids (and big kids) happy during their visit. One for both adults and children, Global Village is a park with several pavilions, shows and dining areas that showcase culture from 90 different countries across the world, while the IMG Adventure Park is the world’s largest indoor theme park, with dozens of rides and areas relating to Marvel characters, Cartoon Network and the ‘Lost Valley’ of dinosaurs.

The Hollywood-inspired Motiongate has several rides inspired by blockbuster classics, from Shrek to The Hunger Games , while the city’s Legoland park is another popular choice, home to over 40 rides and attractions and six themed lands, plus its own waterpark. On the subject of waterparks, Dubai has several: Wild Wadi, Aquaventure and Laguna are some of the best, with wave pools, 18-metre waterfalls, lazy rivers and even a 34-metre tall tower ride among the highlights.

Sharjah has built four new mosques at one junction, featuring traditional Islamic designs and presenting a truly Arab cultural and Islamic look to the city.

The mosques are nestled between the residential towers and surrounding the famous square – earlier known as Al Khan Bridge.

Located at one of the key squares on Sharjah-Dubai Road that connect the emirate’s industrial area with Jamal Abdul Nasir Street, Al Wahda Street, Al Khan and Al Nahda, each of them has a total land area of 400 square metres and can accommodate 1,300 worshippers – both male and female.

Interestingly, all four mosques feature similar designs and structures such as 60-metre high minarets and four domes, giving an amazing aerial view to the residents, shutterbugs and onlookers.

They have been named after Islam’s four caliphs Abu Bakr Al Siddiq, Omar bin Al Khattab, Othman bin Affan and Ali bin Abi Talib.

Sharjah promotes Arab and Islamic heritages at local and international levels to attract more tourists. The emirate is already home to some of the most beautiful mosques in the country such as Al Noor Mosque on the Buhairah Corniche and Sharjah Mosque on Kalba Road.

Residents in the neighbourhoods welcomed the initiative as the mosques would serve thousands of worshippers, especially during the summer and the holy month of Ramadan when mosques are teeming with worshippers.

“This intersection is very vital, surrounded by large residential towers, and there was a need for mosques in this area. Not just residents, these mosques will also cater to motorists who are driving towards Dubai and Ajman on this busy corridor,” said Abdul Jabbar, a resident of Ajman who frequently travels on this road.

Salman Ahmed, a resident of Al Khan, thanked the Sharjah government. “I had to walk for quite some time to reach the nearest mosque. But now it’s just a few minutes away from my home. I have also seen many people taking photos of all the mosques because they truly make a beautiful background,” he said.

Hajj heat wave deaths underscore climate threat for most vulnerable

Many of those who died this month from extreme heat in Saudi Arabia were unregistered pilgrims without access to cooling facilities during the Hajj.

DUBAI — The effects of a deadly heat wave during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia this month were made worse by the lack of accommodations and other services such as cooling centers for those who traveled there without proper permits, witnesses and media reports said.

Temperatures in the holy city of Mecca topped 125 degrees Fahrenheit during the five-day pilgrimage that started June 14, according to the Saudi meteorological center. On Sunday, Saudi Health Minister Fahd Al-Jalajel told local media that 1,301 deaths had been reported and that 83 percent of those people were unregistered pilgrims. At least 600 were from Egypt, according to diplomats who spoke to Agence France-Presse and other news agencies.

The Hajj is normally a source of prestige for the Saudi government. Saudi authorities said about 1.8 million pilgrims made the journey, which is one of the five central tenets of Islam.

Every able-bodied Muslim is required to complete the Hajj once in their lifetime. Many of the rituals include spending extended periods of time outdoors and walking long distances. It can also be costly, and Saudi Arabia approves only a set number of pilgrim visas each year, with quotas for each Muslim-majority country. Hundreds of thousands of people who don’t secure permits still manage to participate, however, often on tourism visas arranged by unlicensed travel operators.

With global temperatures on the rise, including in the desert kingdom, and a two-tiered system that prevents many pilgrims from accessing facilities or services, the pilgrimage could become increasingly risky. The Saudi government is already facing growing scrutiny over its role as host of one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

Over the past four decades, Saudi Arabia has warmed at a rate that is 50 percent higher than the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, according to a 2021 study published by the American Meteorological Society , which said that if the trend persists, “human survival in the region will be impossible without continuous access to air conditioning.”

Another study, in the journal Geophysical Research Letters in 2019, said that climate change will elevate heat stress for Hajj pilgrims to levels exceeding the “extreme danger threshold” from 2047 to 2052 and 2079 to 2086, “with increasing frequency and intensity as the century progresses.”

People who attended the Hajj this year described oppressive, inescapable heat that permeated even air-conditioned spaces. Pilgrims seeking shelter packed into already overcrowded mosques or sprayed each other with water in an attempt to cool down. Some, having walked miles in the desert sun, collapsed or died in the streets.

Witnesses said unregistered pilgrims were in some cases denied access to air-conditioned tents and other official cooling centers where those with Hajj permits could escape the high temperatures. Even when some people were visibly ill, authorities refused to help them, pilgrims said. In some instances, the unregistered pilgrims themselves, fearing retribution from Saudi authorities, declined to seek medical help.

At one point, the generators powering air conditioners inside tents stopped working because of the heat, said Ahmad Bahaa, 37, an Egyptian pilgrim who lives in Saudi Arabia.

“I told my friend … ‘I can’t breathe and I feel like I’m going to get sunstroke while sitting in the tent. I don’t know where to go,’” he said.

Authorities encouraged people to stay inside as the heat bore down, but “almost everyone walking in the streets were undocumented pilgrims,” he said, adding that their situation was “heartbreaking.”

According to Syam Resfiadi, chairman of Indonesia’s Union of Hajj and Umrah Organizers, Saudi police cracked down on unregistered pilgrims before the Hajj began. They conducted sweeps of guesthouses and hotels and arrested hundreds who did not have the proper documentation, Resfiadi said.

But many of the pilgrims, most from lower-income countries, are often swindled by brokers or travel agents posing as official Hajj tour operators. They pay money for what they think will be a full-service trip, only to arrive and find there is no assistance available to them.

The Egyptian government on Saturday said it was revoking the licenses of 16 tourism companies that facilitated travel for unregistered pilgrims, and would refer the owners and managers to the public prosecutor.

A large proportion of pilgrims are also elderly, some using their life savings to perform the Hajj before they die. They are also much more vulnerable to the heat.

Mohamed Fadl, 28, is an Egyptian pharmacist. He said his aunt, 70-year-old Kareema Abdelrahman Hussein, who raised him as her own son, died last week while attending the Hajj as an unregistered pilgrim. An elder from their village in Sharqiya in northern Egypt persuaded his aunt to join a group of about 30 pilgrims he was taking to Saudi Arabia on tourism visas, saying the experience would be no different from making the journey with the proper permits.

“She was a simple woman, illiterate,” said Fadl, adding that they fought before she left because he didn’t want her to go without an official visa.

When the group arrived in Mecca, things went south almost immediately. The village elder who organized the trip disappeared, and Hussein soon discovered that he had grossly overcharged her for the hotel she was staying in. It was unclear if the bus that was supposed to take her to Mount Arafat, outside of Mecca, ever arrived — but somehow she made the roughly 12-mile journey.

The trip to Mount Arafat, where the prophet Muhammad is believed to have delivered his final speech, is the spiritual peak of the Hajj pilgrimage. Worshipers converge on the sacred hillside to stand together and ask God for mercy and forgiveness. There is little to no shade.

According to Fadl, his aunt was walking back to Mecca from Arafat when she encountered a doctor and said she was having pain and trouble breathing. Medical workers nearby arranged for her to be transferred to King Faisal Hospital in Mecca, but she died on the way.

For those who perish while performing the Hajj, Saudi authorities will organize burials in Mecca, unless their families request that the bodies be repatriated.

“I insisted that she was not dead and we need to make sure,” Fadl said. After combing the news, he noticed that “there were many lost people and others posting photos of their missing family members.”

The annual gathering has seen tragic, deadly incidents in the past, often linked to the sheer size of the crowds. In 2015, more than 2,000 people were killed in a stampede during the pilgrimage.

But on Tuesday, even as reports of heat-related deaths emerged, Jalajel, the Saudi health minister, released a statement hailing the “success of this year’s Hajj health plans.”

“Despite the large number of pilgrims and the challenges posed by high temperatures, we experienced no outbreaks or public health threats,” Jalajel said.

The Saudi government has made some efforts in recent years, as well as ahead of the pilgrimage this month, to try to mitigate heat stress on pilgrims, not all of which have been effective, researchers say.

Earlier this month, Saudi authorities said they had painted the asphalt surrounding the Namira Mosque , near Mount Arafat, with a “surface-cooling coat” that officials said would better reflect sunlight and lower surface temperatures by around 20 degrees Celsius, or 36 degrees Fahrenheit, creating “a more comfortable environment” for pedestrians.

Satellite imagery confirmed that areas near the mosque were covered with a lighter coating starting in May, but a major stretch of road beginning at the northeastern edge of the mosque was not covered before the start of the Hajj. Videos and satellite imagery taken over the past several days — including June 15, when crowds thronged the mosque and surrounding roads — showed masses of pilgrims on foot near the mosque, including in the uncovered areas.

But while reflective coatings might reduce the temperature of the asphalt, they have limited effects on the air temperatures pedestrians experience, said Ariane Middel, a professor at Arizona State University who is focused on urban climate landscaping and infrastructure in the face of extreme heat.

“If you want to keep pilgrims cool, increasing the reflectivity of the roads will not help,” she said. “It is not reducing the heat load on the human body, which is what you want to achieve to cool people.”

Middel said providing shade along pilgrimage routes is a more effective way to cool people when they are outside, and pointed to Saudi efforts to plant trees, provide water and umbrellas, and install misting systems.

“With rising temperatures, they would have to scale up those efforts, because more and more people will need these cooling measures to not develop heat-related illnesses or die — especially the elderly, who are more vulnerable to heat,” she said.
