TripAdvisor's #1 Tour in Milford Sound

logo, company name

HIGHLY recommend Cruise Milford over the other boat tour companies - the ship is smaller, less people, has multiple outdoor viewing options and the narration from our boat driver was great. We did the 9:45am tour and recommend that (leave from Te Anau around 7am) as there were fewer people and it's before the tour buses arrive. The ride is smooth (we went once in pouring rain and once in the sun) and the views are worth it. Recommend booking in advance but we did walk up to the first cruise of the day today and got tickets.

Wonderful experience! Our captain was professional, funny, and had an incredible knowledge about New Zealand and Milford Sound. The cruise was comfortable and smooth. Highly recommend this company if you are wanting to see the incredible beauty of Milford Sound!

There are so many cruises you can choose, but we picked Cruise Milford as a local company and a smaller boat. They truly delivered! A very intimate experience with plenty of space (as we saw the hoards of crowds boarding the other large boats we knew we made the right choice). And a bonus: because their boat is smaller we could get up close to some of the waterfalls and it was such a magical experience all around. Recommend to all!

10/10 BEST boat tour to see Milford Sound!! If you are trying to find the best tour when going to Milford Sound, look no further! Cruise Milford is a family run business and we had an excellent time cruising with them. We saw seals on our tour and also had tea and cookies as well. It was such a pleasant experience and special that we got to see Milford Sound on an unusually sunny day. Highly recommend booking with them for this once in a lifetime cruise through the 8th wonder of the world!

We had an absolutely awesome day with Cruise Milford. Knowledgeable commentary, amazing scenery and the friendly staff, who was happy to talk to us and tell anecdotes about the area, made our day. Thanks so much! We can highly recommend!

We cruised on Friday. It was so spectacular and was so impressed with the staff and the experience they gave us. With getting us close to some waterfalls and wildlife. It was great listening to them talk about the area they were so knowledgeable. Will hopefully be back one day!!

What a fantastic day. The experience started when we got in the van and were greeted by Kreig. He really made our trip. Stopped at places with spectacular photo opportunities. Such a wealth of local and NZ knowledge. You can’t go wrong with this company. I chose them as it was a small group tour. I got that and so much more.

If you are going to book a trip to Milford please use these guys! Such a good experience, Jonno was astounding with the knowledge he could provide over the duration of the trip. We were shown some good points of interest and got to experience the cruise on a good rainy day! Definitely recommend going with Milford Cruises.

We had a wonderful time, Rod our tour guide and the skipper were fantastic, they made our journey special. They explained everything and showed us everything there was to be seen, they were knowledgeable and funny. Highly recommend. Thank you guys!

Which Milford Sound tour is right for you: Milford Sound road trips vs. scenic flights?

Milford Sound is best experienced through tours. No matter your choice, Milford Sound promises an unforgettable adventure. Make sure to choose the tour that best suits your travel style. Here are some factors to consider to help you choose:

  • Time: Coach journeys take longer (around 4-5 hours each way) compared to scenic flights (30-45 minutes). So if you’re short on time and based in Queenstown, Scenic Flights might be more suited for you (provided you’re okay with heights)
  • Budget: Scenic flights are generally more expensive than coach tours. So if saving money is your priority, and don’t mind a longer tour, go for a coach tour from Queenstown or Te Anau. If you’re already at Milford Sound, the tours are even more cost-friendly as they eliminate travel costs.
  • Experience: Coach tours offer the chance to explore the stunning scenery of Fiordland on the way to Milford Sound and you get to see spots up close. Scenic flights provide a thrilling aerial perspective you won't get on the road. It’s a unique way to experience Milford Sound. If you’re in Queenstown, you can opt for a one-way coach tour and a return flight tour to get the best of both worlds.
  • Fitness: Cruise and flight tours are suitable for all fitness levels and are accessible, while Milford Track tour hikes require a moderate level of fitness.
  • Guided tours: Regardless of your choice all tours are guided and you’ll be getting expert live commentary on the road, in the air, and on the cruise.

Stunning!! A fantastic 2 hours on board viewing Milford Sound. Professional, friendly & knowledgeable crew making sure we saw everything possible & as close up as we could. Highly recommended! lisaobrien10, Via TripAdvisor
The Milford Sound is a beautiful place, and it was wonderful to experience this UNESCO World Heritage Site. We were fortunate to have had lots of rain in the area prior to our visit, so waterfalls over the granite cliffs were abundant. Mitre Peak is so inspiring as it stands tall at the top of the sound. Beauty is everywhere. We also saw seals lounging on the rocks. This is one of the places in New Zealand that you just have to go to. We are so glad we did! Be sure to take a rain jacket, which you can find abundantly at stores in Queenstown and Te Anau. 84404VicS, Via TripAdvisor
Our captain and tour guide were enthusiastic and very informative! Our smaller vessel, the Sinbad (& smaller crowd) were just what we wanted for our cruise. Getting to the sound early meant we beat the tour buses, which was a big plus, both for driving and being out on the water. Check-in was easy, too. Highly recommend the Sinbad for your Milford Sound Cruise! TenaciousLD, Via TripAdvisor
We had an awesome cruise on the Milford Haven, the trip was smooth and the commentary informative, and we saw dolphins and a sealion! The boat was very spacious and easy to get around and, like all the RealNZ staff we dealt with during our holiday, the crew were friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!
Our recent tour to Milford Sound was fantastic. It’s a beautiful place once you arrive but the journey there is also fabulous. Our tour guide Dean was a bundle of knowledge and not only kept us informed along the way, but also stopped at some great places. He also has a great sense of humour and kept us laughing along the way. Milford Sound is beautiful with its many waterfalls and giant mountains. I was also lucky enough to see some dolphins! Thanks for the great day. I highly recommend this tour to everyone!

Milford Sound cruises vary in duration, typically lasting between 1.5 to 2 hours. The exact length depends on factors such as your chosen vessel, weather, wildlife encounters, and overall conditions. During these scenic cruises, you'll navigate the entire length of the stunning fiord. Departing from the Visitor Terminal, the cruise takes you to the Tasman Sea, offering breathtaking views of mountains, waterfalls, and captivating landscapes before returning to the terminal. Explore our fleet to see the average cruising time of each vessel.

What's the difference between the Milford Sound cruise options?

The main differences between our Milford Sound cruise options are the size and layout of each vessel, their food offerings, departure times, and cruise length. Explore our fleet or take this 2-minute quiz to see which vessel floats your boat!

Where does the Milford Sound cruise go?

The Milford Sound cruise sets off from the Visitor Terminal and travels up one side of the fiord out to the Tasman Sea, before returning to the Terminal along the other side. This is to make sure you don’t miss out on any spectacular waterfalls, mountain views, and wildlife.

Where does the Milford Sound cruise leave from?

The Milford Sound cruise sets off from the Milford Terminal , located at the centre of Milford Sound’s small centre. The address is Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, Milford Sound 9679, and the phone number is +64 3 249 6000 . If you’re getting a coach and cruise with RealNZ, we’ll have arranged a coach pickup or meeting location with you prior to travel.

How do I get to Milford Sound for my cruise?

Our professional drivers will take you there, pausing at all the important stop-off points so you can take in all the incredible viewpoints. Read more on how to get to Milford Sound .

Will I see wildlife on the Milford Sound cruise?

Going on a Milford Sound cruise gives you the unique opportunity to encounter native wildlife living in this remote paradise. There might be playful Keas, Fiordland crested penguins, chatty dolphins, graceful albatross, and relaxed NZ fur seals. However, it's essential to appreciate that these creatures are wild, often unpredictable, and some are facing decline. While knowledgeable nature guides will search for wildlife, the animals’ spontaneity means sightings are not guaranteed. A journey into Milford Sound offers a chance to connect with the natural world, and each sighting becomes a testament to the untamed beauty of this incredible environment.

Is the Milford Sound cruise child-friendly?

The Milford Sound cruise is extremely child-friendly, offering an unforgettable experience for your little ones. While exploring the vessel, it's important to be cautious due to potential hazards like steps and railings. Ensuring your children's safety is paramount. Kids will love the cruise, especially as it brings them up close to magnificent waterfalls and offers opportunities to spot fascinating wildlife.

To make the most of the journey, pack essentials for a comfortable day trip, including waterproof layers, a sun hat, and ample food and water. Additionally, bring along games to keep them entertained during travel.

What is the Milford Sound cruise cancellation policy?

Our Milford Sound cruise has a 24-hour cancellation policy for bookings made directly with RealNZ. Full refunds will be given in the event of a cancellation, and amendments can be made to your booking when RealNZ receives notification at least 24 hours prior (NZ time) to your departure time. This does not account for Milford Sound Overnight Cruises, which asks for 14 days' notice prior to departure.

Does the Milford Sound coach make any scenic stops?

The Milford Sound coach makes multiple stops along the way to Milford Sound so you can take in the incredible views and also pause for amenities like restrooms and snacks. From Queenstown, you’ll stop in Te Anau for a restroom break, snacks, and coffee, before heading into the Fiordland National Park. Here, you’ll stop at Mirror Lakes to take in the incredible reflection of the mountains in the still waters. You’ll also stop further along the road in the Eglington Valley to absorb the immensity of the Fiordland mountains. Later, you might stop at another restroom before travelling on to Monkey Creek, the best spot to see the mischievous Keas in action. A short stop might be made at the entrance to the Homer Tunnel while you’re waiting to enter before making your way into the centre of Milford Sound.

Can I bring my luggage on the coach?

There is limited luggage space on the coach to Milford Sound. If needed, we can store larger luggage in the undercarriage of the coach while you’re on the cruise and only if you’ll be returning on the same coach. However, there’s no space in the coach seating area for large bags.

Where does the coach pick up from?

In Queenstown, the coach will pick you up from our RealNZ Visitor Centre at 88 Beach Street, Queenstown, 9300. Our coaches can make pick-ups from select accommodations, contact us at +64 3 249 6000 if you’d like to enquire or make a pickup request. Check your booking confirmation email to see if you have already arranged a pickup.

We are also able to pick up guests from Te Anau, from the RealNZ Visitor Centre , 85 Lakefront Drive, Te Anau 9640. Accommodation pickups in Te Anau are not available.

Do I need to bring a car seat for my child on the coach?

Car seats are not mandatory on our coaches and we do not have them available for hire. If you want to bring a car seat for your child on the coach, you are more than welcome but you must provide your own.

How long does the coach take?

The coach to Milford Sound takes between 4-5 hours from Queenstown and between 2-3 from Te Anau. These times includes stops in Te Anau, and along the Milford Road for photos, scenery, and wildlife. The journey back is slightly faster, as we make fewer stops. Sit back, relax and watch the magnificent views roll by on our coach.

Is there parking available in Milford Sound?

Both paid and free parking are available in Milford Sound. The main car park in Milford Sound is the closest to the Visitor Terminal and is clearly signposted as you enter the small village centre. It is only a 5 - 10-minute walk along a beautiful path with views of the fiord and costs an hourly rate of $10. The free parking is slightly further away from the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, about a 25-minute stroll along a scenic forested pathway and is located at Deepwater Basin Road. You should allow 45 minutes to 1 hour to park your vehicle and transfer to the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, where you should check-in for your cruise 20 minutes prior to departure.

Are cruises wheelchair accessible/safe for impaired mobility?

When we are informed in advance about guests with hindered mobility, we make every effort to mitigate the impact by assigning rooms in proximity to the main areas. However, it’s important to note that our vessels are not optimally equipped for potential needs. While we extend a warm welcome to individuals with impaired mobility, our vessels all have at least one sea sill that the guests will need to navigate. None have fully accessible bathrooms on board. However, there are accessible bathrooms at the Milford terminal. Below are the vessel descriptions based on accessibility:

The Sovereign: Our most accessible, though guests still need to be able to navigate a sea-sill, and it can’t accommodate electric wheelchairs due to turnaround space.

Milford Haven: Guests need to navigate a sea-sill and will be confined to the café level; there is an outdoor viewing deck on the same level, which can be accessed via a sea-sill but turning in a wheelchair can be tight.

Milford Mariner: Not recommended for wheelchair users due to steep, narrow stairs to the main viewing deck and high sea-sills.

The Sinbad: Semi-accessible bathroom on board but accessed over high sea-sills, no access to the top deck.

Do you cater to dietary requirements on the cruises?

We can cater to dietary requirements on the cruises. Please let us know what requirements you have when you make your booking, and we can make sure there are options for you.

Will I get cold or wet on the Milford Sound cruise?

Milford Sound can be a cold and wet place, but that doesn’t mean you need to be! Pack for most weather outcomes, like a rain jacket, a warm layer, sunscreen, and a sunhat, and you’ll be comfortable for whatever the weather brings.

Will the cruise go ahead in bad weather?

Aside from road closure due to snow, the Milford Sound cruise is likely to go ahead in most weather. Very strong wind is usually the only weather to cause cancellations, but Milford Sound is typically sheltered from wind and rough tides. In Milford Sound, we welcome heavy rain, as it brings out the hundreds of waterfalls.

What happens if my travel is disrupted by COVID-19?

If your travel plans are disrupted by COVID-19, our standard cancellation policy applies. This includes flexible cancellation options designed to accommodate unexpected changes. To ensure you are fully covered for any unforeseen circumstances, we strongly encourage you to obtain travel insurance. Travel insurance can help cover any costs incurred from having to cancel or reschedule your trip due to COVID-19, giving you peace of mind.

For more details on our cancellation policy and the specific terms and conditions, please refer to our Terms and conditions page or contact our customer service team.

Excellent site. A must do with boat tours to truly see all of Milford sound. One of the highlights of our trip! We spent an entire day. It was rainy and we were worried this would ruin our trip, but the Milford sound comes to life with the rain, as it creates thousands of waterfalls down the mountains.

This is a must see in New Zealand. Stunning scenery and great seeing the kea and dolphins. I would recommend visiting Milford sound as you will not be disappointed.

only problem was time the bus left as different to what TripAdvisor said 45min later. is bus or Tripadvisor wrong ? Needs to be corrected. No time in milford to visit shops

We were with a tour group and this was one of the events. Large boat to tour the Fjords. Great box lunch. Coffee bar that had good lattes. The boat trip was very cool. The captain gets up close to the canyon walls to offer a great view of the waterfalls. He pointed out pods of dolphins. Offered some facts about the history of the sound. Great half day activity. Go in the morning to beat the afternoon crowds of tourist buses.

Spectacular views and a must see when in New Zealand. Our (RealNZ) coach tour guide, Grant was a fountain of information and made our trip fun. The views of the landscape were incredible from the top deck of the Sovereign. The only negative would be about passengers taking up seating with bags and not allowing others to sit inside in the warmth.

milford sound cruise from te anau

Absolutely stunning scenery, and an opportunity to see seals and dolphins in the wild. Excellent commentary by a lovely young lady. Peaceful cruise to the mouth of the sound surrounded by massive cliffs and mountains. Makes one realise how insignificant and small we are on this planet.
