Dakota Fanning Reveals Unconventional Birthday Gift Tom Cruise Has Given Her Every Year Since She Was 12

Dakota fanning shared that former costar tom cruise sends her a pair of shoes for her birthday every year, something he's done for the 30-year-old since she turned 12..

Tom Cruise  takes the mission of giving a birthday gift very seriously.

In fact, the  Top Gun  star has made sure that former costar  Dakota Fanning  gets an extra special present from him every year, a tradition that started when he played her dad in 2005's  War of the Worlds .

"I turned 11 on  War of the Worlds  when we worked together," she explained on  The Kelly Clarkson Show  June 5 , "and he gave me my first cellphone for that birthday. It was a Motorola Razr."

The 30-year-old joked that while she "didn't have anyone to call" at the time, she had wanted a Razr "so bad."

"I must have been talking about it a lot," she laughed, "because that's what he got me. It was such a great memory."

But Tom's presents didn't stop there, as the 61-year-old has continued sending her birthday gifts.

"He always sends me the same thing every year, after the cellphone," she said. "I loved shoes when I was little and I started to be able to fit into really small adult shoes when I was on the  War of the Worlds press tour, so I was very excited about them. And so, from that birthday on, he always sends me shoes." 

And host   Kelly Clarkson  was delighted by Tom's generosity, saying that it's "so nice" of the actor to continue the tradition after all the years.

"I love it," Kelly told Dakota. "You must have a massive shoe collection brought to you by Tom Cruise."

But shoes aren't the only present the  Mission: Impossible  star gives: He's also been known to gift friends coconut bundt cakes during the holidays. In fact, the sweet treat has been  dubbed the "Tom Cruise Cake"  by many celebs, with his  Jack Reacher: Never Go Back  costar  Cobie Smulders  joking that the "most glorious time of year" is when the dessert arrives at her home.

"I leave it in my freezer and it lasts until, like, March," she quipped  during a 2019 episode of  The Tonight Show . "I just slowly chip away at this thing. It's so good. I don't know why. I'm not even a big sweets person, but it's so good."

In remembrance of our hygienist, Melanie. 

  Melanie grew up in Lewiston, Maine, where she attended Lewiston High School and worked at St. Mary’s Hospital part time. She attended University College of Bangor (UMA) and graduated in 2005 with her Associate’s Degree in Dental Hygiene with her certificate to administer local anesthesia. During her last semester of hygiene school, Melanie was awarded with the Oral-B Patient Educator of the Year Award. Melanie lived in Georgetown with her puppy. She had been practicing hygiene for over a decade. Her hobbies included arts and crafts of all kinds. She was fluent in French, Melanie’s parents are from rural Quebec and that is where all of her extended family still lives.

Melanie was one of the most dedicated dental hygienist’s we have ever worked with. She was at Bath Family Dental for 12 years and will be greatly remembered and missed. She made a great impact on the patients who go to sit in her chair regularly. Melanie passed away unexpectedly on December 14, 2021.

Katherine Goolsby

Katherine Rose Goolsby, age 79, of Lamesa, Texas, passed away from this life to be with her God on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 in Lamesa, Texas.     She was born on March 27, 1941 to Joseph “Jelly” and Mildred “Sis” (McSwane) Trotter in San Angelo, Texas, at Shannon Hospital. She had one older sister, Janie Malone of Colorado City, Texas; one older brother Joe Trotter of Patricia, Texas; and one younger sister, Alice Stephenson of Lamesa, Texas and Montgomery, Texas.     Kathy did most of her growing up in Toyah, Texas, and Aztec, New Mexico, where she graduated from Aztec High School in May of 1959. She served as a Dental assistant, and then Dental hygienist. She was trained and served at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. She left the service in June of 1962, and moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where she married William “Bill” Ewing in July of 1962.     Melanie Faye Cruise Archuleta is her only child, and Frisco Joseph Cruise is her only grandchild. She loved them with such great passion, you would swear she had a houseful of children.      She divorced and left Florida with Melanie to come to Lamesa, Texas in 1964, to be near her parents and siblings.     She met and married William L. Goolsby on May 29, 1968. William came to the marriage with his two sons, William “Bill” Hoyt Goolsby, and Jon Charles Goolsby. She lost William on January 1, 1994. He was co-owner of Goolsby Bros. Pipe and Steel Co., and he continued working until his death.     Kathy graduated from Licensed Vocational Nurse School at Medical Arts Hospital and passed her state boards exams on March 25, 1967. After working at Medical Arts Hospital as an LVN for 25 years (joyfully), she graduated from Midland College to serve her community as a Registered Nurse in December of 1991. She retired in May of 2006,  but continued to work “as needed” for 3 years, giving her 42 years of extensive service experience to her beloved patients.      Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Jelly and Mildred “Sis” Trotter; her husband, William Goolsby; two sisters who died in infancy (JoAnn and Billie Fern); brothers-in-law, Barry Stephenson, and Bill Malone.     Kathy is survived by her loving family: daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Damon Archuleta of Silver City, New Mexico; her grandson, Frisco Joseph Cruise of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who was most precious to her; also her brother Joe Trotter and children, Michille Underwood and her husband Roy, Billy Trotter, Robin Herrington and husband Allen, Melinda “Mendy” Shugart and husband Rob, Jamie Trotter and wife Cyndi, her sister Janie Malone and children, Mitchell Greenlee and wife Misti, Leslie Jones and husband David, her sister, Alice Stephenson and children, Priscilla “Chris” Stephenson and wife Lisa, Clifford Stephenson and wife Beth, Katherine “Kathy” Stephenson and wife Jennifer, along with 11 nieces and nephews she was blessed to be called “Aunt Kathy,” and by 19 great nieces and nephews, plus 10 great-great nieces and nephews.     A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church in Lamesa, Texas.     Memorial gifts may be given in her memory to the charity of your choice.
