Maximum Effective Range Chart for All Rifle Cartridges

max bullet travel range

If you hunt and want to shoot at a longer range, you may be wondering what the effective range of a rifle cartridge is. In this post, we’ll look in-depth into that question.

In general, a bullet’s maximum effective range is the distance at which it no longer travels fast enough to reliably expand when it hits a target. This is usually about 1,900fps with most bullet designs. In addition to expanding reliably, a bullet must carry sufficient energy to take down the animal.

The effective range of a bullet can be measured in different ways because it depends on what the bullet needs to be “effective” at doing. For this experiment, we’ll look at three common ways to determine effectiveness.

  • Distance Bullet Drops Under 1,900 FPS – As a bullet travels, it slows down. When a bullet slows down under approximately 1,900 FPS, bullets can enter a target and never expand. If the bullet expands, it is not very effective at causing damage and can result in an injured animal rather than effectively killing it. The number on the chart below is the distance in yards at which this standard is no longer met.
  • Distance Bullet Carries Less Than 1,000 ft-lbs of Energy – The 1k ft-lbs number is widely considered the amount of energy needed to immediately and ethically kill a deer-sized animal. For law enforcement, a human target is approximately the same size as a deer. The number on the chart below is the distance in yards at which this standard is no longer met.
  • Distance Bullet Carries Less Than 1,500 ft-lbs of Energy – This standard is used for elk-sized game such as kudu, moose, a waterbuck, a young eland, etc. The number on the chart below is the distance in yards at which this standard is no longer met.
  • Max Travel Distance – This is the distance, in yards, at which a bullet will impact the ground when fired in the air at a perfect angle to maximize distance.
  • Why Some Boxes On The Chart Are Marked “N/A” – This means that the bullet does not meet this standard at any distance. You may note some specialty bullets such as the .300 Blackout on are marked as N/A for all three standards because it uses very heavy, very soft bullets which travel very slow. It doesn’t fit neatly into these standards, but obviously is very lethal from short range.

The data in the following table contains averages for each cartridge. We analyzed 6 different loads for each cartridge (the proper way to read that sentence is “Jim sat at a computer for WEEKS putting data into very complicated Excel sheets) to come out with an average of what several common loads for each cartridge will accomplish.

Every effective range calculation will, by its nature, be only a broad approximation. Shot placement, bullet construction, and animal individuality will all dramatically impact the effectiveness of the bullet.

For example, having 1,500 ft-lbs of energy to kill a bull elk is a decent barometer, but elk have also been killed with far less energy when excellent shot placement and good bullet construction are in play. However, hunters who choose to use gear that does not meet this standard are often forced to either make an unethical shot or to pass up shot opportunities when the elk isn’t turned the right way.

Also, remember that the data in the table above is using averages of multiple loads per cartridge. You may be able to use a heavier bullet and achieve more energy or a longer range with more velocity.

Long-Range Bullets vs Standard Hunting Bullets, it matters

Since we’re talking about max distances, I’d like to clarify something here. Not all bullets are “Max-Range bullets”. I mentioned that a bullet may not perform well under 2,000 fps. Well, that would limit most hunting rifles to between 150 and 400-yards. But wait, there’s more.

Depending on bullet type and construction, the minimum expansion velocity for rifles falls between about 1300 and 2000 fps. If you want to max things out, you need a bullet that will expand at lower velocities. But, you don’t want to get too close to that minimum expansion velocity. Minimum sucks.

For example, most of the all-copper expanding bullets need something like 1,900 0r 2,000 fps to expand even a little. while they work great at closer ranges, they will fail miserably if you want to push your shots out there. So, you definitely need a long-range bullet for most longer shots.

We have an article on Backfire that goes a bit deeper into long-range hunting cartridges and bullet selection. Here’s a link to it.

“The bullet with the lowest expansion threshold is Nosler Accubond Long Range, which expands starting at 1300 fps. Hornady ELD-X and Barnes LRX both will expand at 1600 fps. All three are excellent choices for long-range hunting ammo.” Jordy Buck, owner of guntradition.com

Max Distance vs Practical Distance

Practical distance isn’t the same as the max distance a rifle can shoot. There are quite a few variables that all work to decrease the true potential of a rifle. Seldom is the practical max the same as the true max distance.

Perhaps my hunting rifle and bullet combo are capable of shooting 550-yards. That doesn’t mean I should take a shot that far. The three sometimes neglected variables are the human factor, the weather factor, and the fact that you are shooting at a wild animal, not a stationary target.

If it’s foggy or rainy out, the clarity of your sight picture will limit how well you can shoot. Just like shooting near dawn or dusk, or shooting into a glare. That can easily make my practical distance come down to 250-yards.

If I add to that a gusty 25 mph wind, I’m not shooting past 200 yards. It’s all highly situational, but it matters. You’re also not going to shoot as well on a moving animal.

A rule of thumb I use is if an animal is walking, shots need to be twice as close. If your max is 400-yards and the deer is moving, perhaps stick to 200-yards. Or wait and hope it stops for a few seconds.

Another limiting point is how well you judge distance. Far shots start to need a lot of compensation for bullet drop and wind drift to make an ethical shot on a game animal. Do you plan to hit every animal with a rangefinder? Shots near the max effective range can totally miss the animal if you misjudge the distance by 50-yards.

Shooting “Max Distance” is a Recipe for Failure.

I don’t like playing games of “how far can I go” and “minimum bullet energy”. Isn’t it smart to have a buffer and not go to the utmost maximum? That’s when little things cause failures. Sure, some experts have even gone beyond what we consider the “max distance”.

Youtube is full of those videos. But, everything has to be perfect for it to work. Remember, they don’t show you the times it didn’t work. Little things that you may never have noticed can make a shot fail if you are really pushing the limits.

The Bigger Question is, what’s YOUR maximum? Know how well you shoot in different conditions and trust your skills. Learn to listen to your gut and understand your abilities.

At the moment of truth, if you aren’t sure you will make a good shot, don’t squeeze the trigger. I’m not talking about self-doubt or simply asking yourself “what if I miss”. If for a brief fraction of a second everything is lined up and you in that instant know you got it, take the shot.

But, if you aren’t able to get things perfectly lined up for just long enough to pull the trigger and follow through a smidge, let it go. Better to pass on a questionable shot. A good marksman will not squeeze the trigger unless he believes it will work. Be intentional and smart with each shot.

Leave nothing to chance, because great things don’t happen on accident.

How Far Can a Bullet from a Rifle Travel?

Posted by Jessica Koenes on Mar 4th 2022

How far can a bullet from a rifle travel? This is the science behind firing and how projectile size can affect power, distance, or effective range.

Do you know that old saying about how far a bullet can travel the maximum effective range of any rifle is very different from the total distance bullets will ultimately cover. it requires math and science to solve this equation, the gun that goes with bullet.

Generally, guns are classified according to size, use and trajectories. The main distinction noted with firearms are small arms and artillery. Guns below a 20 millimeter bore are generally classified under the small arms umbrella. Small arms are also often referred to as firearms or hand guns. They come with a smaller caliber and are most associated with concealed carry. Calibers in the range of 5.45, 5.56, 7.62, 12.7, and 14.5 mm are in connection with machine guns. If you want to see something with even more power, look no further than a grenade launcher. This 40 mm lethal weapon holds an explosive punch! Combine the size of a grenade launcher with the power of 2200 meters, and you find yourself with an automatic grenade launcher.

There are a range of firearms in existence today. Each serves their own purpose and each with unique properties.

  • Pistol : This hand operated gun has a chamber that is often fixed in alignment with the bore.
  • Revolver - A revolving cylinder that contains chambers for each individual cartridge sets the revolver apart from other firearms.
  • Rifle - Ah, the classic. These shoulder firearms discharge a bullet through a barrel that is at least 16 inches long. The spiral parallel grooves within the bore create a spin in the projectile. This all leads to stability and extended range.

What is so Special about a Rifle?

“Rifle” literally means a weapon designed and redesigned, made and made yet again. This special weapon is specially designed to be fired from the shoulder. It has unique qualities that allow energy from the explosion in a fixed metallic cartridge to fire through a rifled bore for each pull of the trigger.

This long barreled firearm is specially designed for accuracy. The groves that go in a helical pattern, cut into the bore wall. This weapon is typically designed to be held with both hands and braced against the shoulder of the shooter. The buttstock provides stability for the shooter as it is positioned in a stance with little movement.

Rifles have a long history with many different uses. Traditionally used extensively in warfare, you will find a wide variety of rifles used throughout history. Rifles also have a long history in self defense, law enforcement, hunting and shooting sports. Within the 20th century, the weapon had become so common that the term rifle now has a different meaning. We often now refer to any long shaped handheld ranged weapon designed for accuracy as a rifle.

Rifle Calibers Maximum Range

Whether you are out shooting for the job, hunting, target shooting or just getting in some extra practice, be aware of your maximum gun range and how far you could potentially shoot. Gun safety is imperative, and knowing your range is part of being responsible. The maximum range is the greatest potential distance your bullet can travel. There is usually about a 30 degree optimal range from the horizontal projectile. The maximum range is much larger than the effective range.

Please remember that this table with state is an estimated maximum range. There are always variables that can be in play and that can impact the outcome. Please remember to always be safe when shooting and be aware of not only your maximum shooting range, but also of your surroundings.

Conclusion:

Knowing the range of how far your rifle can shoot is of extreme importance. Your maximum range is part of firearm safety. Always be aware of what your target is and know what lies beyond your target. Knowing the potential of the range you may shoot as well as knowing what is beyond your target can let you know whether it is safe to shoot or not. If there is any potential to shoot something dangerous or vulnerable beyond your target, do not take the shot. It is far better to be safe than sorry.

How Far Can a 5.56 Bullet Travel & Effective Range

cover photo

While most bullets are tiny objects, they pack so much energy that they can travel quite far. In this article, we’ll be looking at the 5.56 bullet and how far it can travel so you know its limits and where it works best.

After reading this, take a look at our article on the top lower receivers for the money .

How Far Can a 5.56 Bullet Travel

5.56 effective range: is it different, factors that affect the maximum range of a 5.56 bullet, what is the 5.56 good for.

To effectively answer the question of “how far can a 5.56 bullet travel,” you first have to determine if you’re talking about the maximum or effective range.

When it comes to maximum distance, the bullet can travel up to about 4300 yards, but when it comes to effective range, it’s about 875 yards. (Reference 1: How far a bullet can travel )

Definitely.

The maximum range is defined as the total distance a bullet is expected to travel before it hits the ground. In contrast, the effective range is the longest distance at which a bullet is expected to hit a target and deliver the desired results, such as killing or injuring the target.

During military campaigns, an effective range is defined as the bullet’s ability to wound an enemy in combat severely. But when your only aim is to hit a paper target, the 5.56 effective range can be over 1000 yards.

Still, to be able to hit a target that far, you need effective ammo, and the weather conditions have to be almost perfect. That is almost impossible if this is your first time using a rifle.

It’s also important to note that various things determine how far the 5.56 bullet can travel.

According to the technical manual of the US Army, when used with a carbine, the point target range of 5.56 is up to 547 yards, with the target area range being 602 yards. When used with a rifle, the target area is up to 875 yards, and the point target range is about 602 yards.

There are a few factors that determine the maximum range of this bullet, such as velocity , trajectory , and atmospheric conditions . You have to take all these factors into account to calculate the maximum range of this bullet accurately.

Let’s start with velocity. A higher velocity means the bullet will travel farther. More speed means encountering less resistance on the way to the target.

That said, velocity affects a bullet’s trajectory because the faster it moves, the more it’s affected by wind drag and gravity.

A trajectory is another factor to keep in mind when determining the maximum range of this bullet. The angle at which you fire your 5.56 bullet and other external forces, such as air resistance and wind, will determine a bullet’s trajectory.

If you fire this bullet from a steep angle, it will have a short range, while a flatter angle will lead to a longer range.

Lastly, the atmospheric conditions at the time you’re firing the bullet will also determine the maximum range of 5.56. If you fire a bullet during calm weather, it will travel farther than if you fire it during windy or rainy conditions. (Reference 2: 5.56 )

Coyote walking on rocks

A 5.56 bullet is decent for varmint hunting. It was intended for shooting pests such as ground squirrels, crows, gophers, woodchucks, and coyotes. Some people use them for hunting deer and antelope, but it’s not powerful enough.

And if it’s not powerful enough for deer, then this is certainly not suitable ammunition for bear hunting. It lacks enough kinetic energy to drop a bear. You would need to be very accurate for that to work.

But to be on the safe side, look for other ammunition intended for big game hunting.

How Far Can a Bullet Travel?

By Berry's , Posted in Blogs February 28, 2023

How far can a bullet travel? How you answer that question depends on the bullet in question. For example, a .22 caliber bullet can travel around 1 mile to 1 1/2 miles. Some bullets, such as a 9 mm may travel up to three miles. Shot travels a shorter distance between 200 and 600 yards.

The maximum distance that a bullet can travel is dependent upon many factors.

Factors That Affect Bullet Range

max bullet travel range

There are so many types of bullets , and the shape of the bullet is a major factor in how effective the bullet is and how far, fast, and hard it travels. Bullet shape ranges from round muzzleloader balls to conical rounds of modern weapons to the shot fired from a shotgun.

Air resistance and environmental conditions are other factors that impact bullet range. If the humidity is high, there is more drag on the bullet. If the wind is blowing towards you or you fire into a crosswind, bullet performance is impacted.

Barrel length also impacts initial velocity, muzzle velocity, and impacts when a bullet reaches terminal velocity - the point where the air resistance balances with the accelerating force caused by gravity.

Bullet design and weight or grain - Heavier bullets vs. lightweight bullets. The shape of the bullet is also important with modern ammunition. Options include round-nosed, pointed, hollow point, modified hollow point, flat-nosed and other options. The shape of the bullet - tapered, boattail , etc. all impact how far a bullet will travel. These refer to the ballistic coefficient - the ability of a bullet to overcome air resistance.

Round compilation - total grain, type of powder, casing length, etc. also impact the velocity and energy that a bullet has, which impacts how far the bullet will travel.

Even the type of rounds - rimfire bullet vs. centerfire bullet can impact bullet performance and how far a bullet can travel.

Bullet weight is another issue with bullets - the grain weight of a bullet and the total grain weight of the round will both impact how the bullet performs and whether it will reach its intended target.

One of the most important factors that impacts how well or how far a bullet travels is "shooter technique". We talk about this a lot. If you are a shooter with bad shooting habits, then bullet performance will drop. If you are a shooter with excellent shooting techniques, then you eliminate many of the shooter-related issues that drop bullet performance.

As we said, there is a lot that goes into how a bullet performs. They are all important considerations whether you are looking for the perfect self-defense bullet or one that will be a champion on the range. How you choose your rounds and bullets are critical to how well the bullet matches your needs.

What is the Difference Between Maximum Range and Effective Range?

max bullet travel range

Maximum range is the total distance a bullet can travel. Effective range or maximum effective range is the farthest distance that you expect to hit your target with a bullet. While some bullets may travel upwards of two miles, can you expect to pick off a six-point buck from two miles away? You might have that expectation, but you are more likely to fail. Even if you managed to hit the buck two miles away, how much damage would the bullet do? It is probably not traveling very fast and has lost most of its energy. Plink!

When we think about the effective maximum range, we must also consider the effect the bullet will or can have at that range. Whether you are talking about a close quarter, self-defense situation where a longer barrel length is not possible or a hunting opportunity where the game animals are distant, or a qualifying shot at a competition the outcome of the shot matters. It is also why all the factors that impact how far a bullet will travel become so important.

As you begin to understand the environment where you will shoot and the natural forces - wind, humidity, rain, etc., - you may experience you can begin to reach for ammo that helps to counter those forces, and doing so begins to improve the maximum range and the effective range of each shot.

How Far Can a Centerfire Bullet Travel?

9mm - 2-3 miles, but the effective range drops off around 150 yards or 450 feet for a rifle and around 50 yards for a pistol. 380 - significantly shorter than a 9 mm bullet. The .380 bullet is considered a low-powered, low muzzle velocity handgun round with an effective range of 50 feet and a more accurate range of around 25 feet. Its effective range varies based on barrel length, but you can expect a spread of 7-10 yards for its effective range. 5.56/.223 - .85 miles - not quite a full mile - The effective range is 400-500 yards or 1,500 feet.

308 - around 3.5 miles maybe longer under more favorable conditions. The effective range for a .308 bullet is around 800 meters (according to the US Army ) which equates to about 2,624 feet.

How Far Can a .22 Bullet Travel?

max bullet travel range

A .22 caliber bullet can travel 1.13 miles or about 2,000 yards. It has an effective range, though, of only 300 yards. The result will depend on the factors that we've discussed. The weather has a big impact on a .22 bullet. The size of the bullet makes it light, and lighter objects are more greatly impacted by wind. They also have less mass making other natural forces such as humidity or rain a problem. What you fire the bullet from is another issue. A .22 rifle will have a greater effective range than a .22 pistol. the shape of the bullet, type of powder, length of casing, and other manufacturing criteria will also impact the performance of the bullet.

An important lesson here though is shooting safety. A .22 bullet can travel 1.3 miles under ideal conditions. That means a missed shot has a lot of potential for doing unintended damage. Even with a lower muzzle velocity a missed shot can be dangerous. Celebratory gunfire is an example of a shooting activity that can have unexpected consequences. For that reason, it is important to make sure that targets are backed by proper material and that a missed shot is not going to do damage to the wrong target.

How Far Will A Rifle Bullet Travel?

Have you ever wondered how far a rifle bullet can travel? It’s a question that has been asked by many people, for many reasons. Perhaps you’re a hunter and you’re curious about the maximum range of your rifle. Or maybe you’re just interested in the physics of firearms. Whatever the reason, the answer to this question is both fascinating and informative.

In this article, we’ll explore the factors that affect the range of a rifle bullet, including the type of rifle, the cartridge, the bullet weight, and the muzzle velocity. We’ll also discuss some of the practical implications of bullet range, such as how it affects hunting and target shooting. By the end of this article, you’ll have a better understanding of how far a rifle bullet can travel, and why.

“`html

A rifle bullet is a small, aerodynamic projectile that is fired from a rifle. The distance that a rifle bullet travels is determined by a number of factors, including the muzzle velocity, gravitational pull, air resistance, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, barrel length, bullet weight, bullet shape, and bullet spin.

In this article, we will discuss the factors that affect bullet travel and how they can be calculated. We will also provide a formula for calculating the trajectory of a rifle bullet.

Factors Affecting Bullet Travel

The following are the factors that affect bullet travel:

  • Muzzle velocity is the speed at which the bullet leaves the barrel of the rifle. The muzzle velocity is determined by the cartridge, the barrel length, and the weight of the bullet.
  • Gravitational pull causes the bullet to fall due to the force of gravity. The gravitational pull is proportional to the mass of the bullet and the acceleration due to gravity.
  • Air resistance is the force that opposes the motion of the bullet through the air. The air resistance is proportional to the square of the velocity of the bullet and the density of the air.
  • Barometric pressure is the pressure of the air at the muzzle of the rifle. The barometric pressure affects the density of the air and, therefore, the air resistance.
  • Wind speed and direction affect the trajectory of the bullet by causing it to drift sideways. The wind speed is measured in miles per hour (mph) and the wind direction is measured in degrees from north.
  • Barrel length affects the muzzle velocity of the bullet. The longer the barrel, the higher the muzzle velocity.
  • Bullet weight affects the muzzle velocity and the trajectory of the bullet. The heavier the bullet, the lower the muzzle velocity and the flatter the trajectory.
  • Bullet shape affects the air resistance and, therefore, the trajectory of the bullet. Bullets with a streamlined shape have less air resistance than bullets with a blunt shape.
  • Bullet spin affects the stability of the bullet in flight and, therefore, the trajectory of the bullet. Bullets that are spun impart gyroscopic stability and are less likely to tumble in flight.

Calculating Bullet Trajectory

The trajectory of a rifle bullet can be calculated using the following formula:

“` y = -(1/2)gt^2 + v0t + y0 “`

  • y is the height of the bullet above the ground (in meters)
  • t is the time (in seconds)
  • g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s^2)
  • v0 is the initial velocity (in meters per second)
  • y0 is the initial height (in meters)

The initial velocity, v0, can be calculated using the following formula:

“` v0 = sqrt(2*g*h) “`

  • h is the height of the rifle (in meters)

The range of a rifle bullet is the maximum distance that the bullet can travel. The range of a bullet can be calculated using the following formula:

“` R = v0^2/g “`

  • R is the range (in meters)

The time of flight of a rifle bullet is the time it takes for the bullet to travel from the muzzle of the rifle to the target. The time of flight can be calculated using the following formula:

“` T = 2v0/g “`

  • T is the time of flight (in seconds)

The maximum height of a rifle bullet is the highest point that the bullet reaches in flight. The maximum height can be calculated using the following formula:

“` H = v0^2/2g “`

  • H is the maximum height (in meters)
  • g is the acceleration due to gravity (9

The distance a rifle bullet will travel depends on a number of factors, including the type of rifle, the caliber of the bullet, the load of the ammunition, and the environmental conditions.

Factors That Affect Accuracy

The following are some of the factors that can affect the accuracy of a rifle bullet:

  • The shooter’s skill . The most important factor affecting accuracy is the skill of the shooter. A skilled shooter will be able to make accurate shots with a wide variety of rifles and ammunition.
  • The rifle’s accuracy . The accuracy of a rifle is determined by a number of factors, including the barrel’s twist rate, the stock’s design, and the quality of the manufacturing. A rifle with a good reputation for accuracy will be more likely to produce accurate shots than a rifle with a poor reputation for accuracy.
  • The ammunition’s quality . The quality of the ammunition can also affect accuracy. A high-quality bullet with a consistent weight and shape will be more accurate than a low-quality bullet with a variable weight and shape.
  • Environmental conditions . The environmental conditions can also affect accuracy. Wind, rain, and snow can all affect the flight of a rifle bullet.

Safety Considerations

When shooting a rifle, it is important to take all necessary safety precautions. Some of the most important safety considerations include:

  • Proper handling of firearms . Always treat all firearms as if they are loaded, even if you know they are not. Never point a firearm at anything you do not intend to shoot.
  • Following the rules of gun safety . The four rules of gun safety are:
  • 1. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded.
  • 2. Never point a firearm at anything you do not intend to shoot.
  • 3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
  • 4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
  • Avoiding negligent discharges . A negligent discharge occurs when a firearm is fired unintentionally. Negligent discharges can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
  • Improper handling of firearms
  • Failure to follow the rules of gun safety
  • Defective firearms
  • Mechanical failure
  • Proper storage of firearms . Firearms should always be stored unloaded and in a safe place. When storing a firearm, it is important to:
  • Unload the firearm
  • Remove the magazine
  • Lock the action
  • Store the firearm in a safe place

The distance a rifle bullet will travel depends on a number of factors, including the type of rifle, the caliber of the bullet, the load of the ammunition, and the environmental conditions. By understanding the factors that affect accuracy, you can improve your shooting skills and make more accurate shots.

It is also important to take all necessary safety precautions when shooting a rifle. By following the rules of gun safety and storing your firearms properly, you can help prevent negligent discharges and keep yourself and others safe.

How far will a rifle bullet travel?

The distance a rifle bullet travels depends on a number of factors, including the type of rifle, the cartridge, the bullet weight, the muzzle velocity, and the environmental conditions.

What type of rifle will shoot the farthest?

The type of rifle that will shoot the farthest is a high-powered rifle with a long barrel. These rifles are typically chambered for magnum cartridges and can fire bullets at very high velocities.

What cartridge will shoot the farthest?

The cartridge that will shoot the farthest is a magnum cartridge with a heavy bullet. These cartridges have a lot of energy and can propel bullets at very high velocities.

How much does bullet weight affect range?

Bullet weight has a significant impact on range. Heavier bullets are more aerodynamic and retain their velocity better than lighter bullets. This means that they can travel farther before they start to drop.

How does muzzle velocity affect range?

Muzzle velocity is another important factor that affects range. The faster a bullet is fired, the farther it will travel. This is because a faster bullet has more kinetic energy and can overcome air resistance more easily.

What environmental conditions affect range?

Environmental conditions can also affect the range of a rifle bullet. Wind, humidity, and temperature can all impact the trajectory of a bullet.

How can I estimate the range of a rifle bullet?

There are a number of ways to estimate the range of a rifle bullet. One common method is to use the following formula:

  • Range (in yards) = [(Bullet Velocity (in feet per second) * 5280) / (9.8 * Bullet Drop (in inches))]

Another method is to use a ballistic calculator. Ballistic calculators are available online and in software applications. They can take into account a variety of factors, including the type of rifle, the cartridge, the bullet weight, the muzzle velocity, and the environmental conditions, to estimate the range of a rifle bullet.

What is the maximum range of a rifle bullet?

The maximum range of a rifle bullet is typically around 3,000 yards. However, it is possible for rifle bullets to travel even farther under ideal conditions. In 2017, a Canadian sniper set a world record by shooting a target from 4,210 yards away.

the factors that affect how far a rifle bullet will travel include the bullet’s mass, velocity, and drag coefficient. The mass of the bullet determines its inertia, which resists changes in its motion. The velocity of the bullet determines its kinetic energy, which is converted into potential energy as the bullet rises. The drag coefficient of the bullet determines how much air resistance it will encounter as it travels. By understanding these factors, shooters can make informed decisions about which bullets to use for different shooting applications.

Here are some key takeaways:

  • The longer a bullet is, the faster it will travel.
  • The heavier a bullet is, the faster it will travel.
  • The more aerodynamic a bullet is, the faster it will travel.
  • The higher the muzzle velocity of a bullet, the farther it will travel.
  • The longer a bullet is in flight, the more it will slow down due to air resistance.
  • The more aerodynamic a bullet is, the less it will slow down due to air resistance.

By understanding these factors, shooters can make informed decisions about which bullets to use for different shooting applications.

Effective Range of an AR-15: How far can it shoot?

Shop These Product Slide Arrow

80 Percent Arms   |   Jul 20th 2023

Whether you're an experienced shooter or a newcomer to the world of firearms, understanding the capabilities of your rifle is crucial. The AR-15 isn't just another average firearm.

The AR15 has become the most commonly used and owned semi-automatic rifle in the United States — due to its unique blend of accuracy, versatility, and customizability.

One question that often pops up in discussions is regarding the AR-15 rifle's effective range – just how far can it shoot? The answer, you'll find, isn't as straightforward as it might seem. In this blog, we're going to delve into the effective and maximum ranges of the AR-15, explore the factors that influence these ranges, and compare the AR-15's range to other firearms.

By the end, you'll not only have a better understanding of your AR-15's capabilities but also appreciate the factors that can either enhance or limit its range.

Effective Range of an AR-15

When it comes to firearms, it's crucial to understand the concept of an AR15's 'max effective range'. In simple terms, the effective range is the maximum distance at which a shooter can expect to hit a target accurately. But what exactly does accuracy entail?

In most discussions, we're referring to the point target effective range, which is the maximum distance at which an average shooter can hit a human-sized target at least 50% of the time.

For the AR-15, numerous factors can impact its effective range. These include the quality and type of ammunition used, the properties of the barrel (like length and twist rate), the skill of the shooter, and the shooting conditions (think wind speed and temperature).

So what is the typical effective range of an AR-15? It's often stated to be around 400 to 600 yards depending on the specific model and the conditions mentioned above. That's actually a ballpark estimate because real-world results can vary considerably.

For example, military documentation often gives the point target effective range of an M16, a military rifle similar to the AR-15, as roughly 600 yards (or 550 meters).

This doesn't mean you'll be hitting targets at 600 yards right off the bat. Improving your marksmanship to utilize the AR-15's effective range fully often requires practice and a good understanding of how different factors can impact your shooting.

Stepping beyond the realm of accuracy, let's talk about the ultimate reach of an AR-15 bullet — the maximum range. This measure is more about the physics of a bullet's flight rather than the precision of its impact.

Maximum Range of an AR-15

The maximum range of a firearm, in our case the AR-15, is defined as the furthest distance a bullet will travel before gravity pulls it down. This is irrespective of its ability to accurately hit a target.

According to NATO standards, a bullet ceases to be lethal when its kinetic energy drops below 85 Joule. Crunching the numbers for a standard 55-grain bullet exiting an AR-15 barrel at about 3,200 feet per second, this equates to a maximum range of approximately 3,000 yards, or about 1.7 miles.

However, it's crucial to remember this isn't a practical shooting distance. Achieving this range would require an unrealistically high angle of fire, turning your rifle into a makeshift mortar. While it might seem exciting that an AR-15 bullet can fly that far, it's not a factor you'd consider under normal shooting circumstances.

Remember, firearm safety is paramount. Be aware of your bullet's potential trajectory, even at improbable distances. The golden rule of gun safety rings true here — always be sure of your target and what's beyond it.

Factors that Affect Range

The journey from the flash at the muzzle to the impact on the target is quite the dance of physics and engineering. To push your rifle as far as you’re able there are some critical factors to consider.

  • Barrel Length: The length of the barrel is a primary determinant of the bullet's velocity and consequently its range. Longer barrels allow more room for the bullet to accelerate, resulting in higher muzzle velocities and increased range.
  • Bullet Weight: The weight of the bullet used plays a significant role in its trajectory. Lighter bullets typically have a higher initial speed and a flatter trajectory, which can enhance accuracy at closer ranges. Conversely, heavier bullets maintain their velocity better over long distances and are less susceptible to wind drift, making them more suitable for long-range shooting.
  • Wind Conditions: Wind can deviate your bullet off its intended trajectory, particularly over longer distances. Knowing how to gauge and compensate for windage is a crucial skill for long-range shooting.
  • Temperature: Believe it or not, the temperature can affect your shooting as well. It can influence gunpowder performance and air density, both of which can alter your bullet's velocity and trajectory.
  • Ammunition Quality: The quality of your ammunition can greatly impact the consistency of your shooting. Higher-quality rounds tend to offer more uniformity in bullet weight, gunpowder load, and construction, which leads to more predictable performance.

AR-15 vs. Other Firearms

The world of firearms is hugely diverse with a range of guns designed for various purposes and environments. As we delve into a comparison of the effective and maximum ranges of multiple firearms we'll quickly see why the AR-15 is often hailed as a versatile and effective choice for many shooting situations.

Below is a chart of general data for not only the AR15 effective range but also AK47, AR10 chambered in .308 and 9mm pistols:

max bullet travel range

  • AK-47: Considered the AR-15's long-standing counterpart, the AK-47 has an effective range of approximately 300-400 yards , with a maximum range extending around 1,300 yards. However, the AR-15, with its superior accuracy and lighter recoil, tends to outperform the AK-47 at longer distances.
  • Hunting Rifles (like the .308 Winchester): Typically, bolt-action hunting rifles like those chambered in .308 Winchester have an effective range of around 800 yards, significantly outdistancing the standard AR-15. However, these firearms are often heavier and less versatile for closer combat scenarios.
  • Pistols: Firearms like the 9mm Glock have a far shorter effective range, typically around 50 yards , and a maximum range of approximately 200 yards. Pistols are designed for close-quarters defense rather than long-distance engagements.

The AR-15's combination of lightweight design, manageable recoil, and respectable range make it a versatile weapon, suitable for home defense, hunting, and sport shooting.

This flexibility, paired with the wide variety of aftermarket parts and accessories available, allows each gun owner to tailor their AR-15 to their specific needs and preferences.

What is the effective range of an AR-15?

The effective range of a standard AR-15, under optimal conditions, is around 500-600 yards. This means that a shooter can expect to consistently hit a human-sized target within this range.

How far can an AR-15 shoot accurately?

An AR-15 can accurately shoot up to 600 yards for point targets, and up to 800 yards for area targets. Keep in mind that environmental factors and the shooter's skill can influence accuracy.

What affects the effective range of an AR-15?

Several factors affect the effective range of an AR-15, including the ammunition used, the quality and length of the barrel, environmental conditions, and the shooter's skill level.

How does barrel length impact the range of an AR-15?

Generally, a longer barrel can lead to higher muzzle velocity, which can improve the range and accuracy of the AR-15. However, the benefits taper off beyond a certain length, typically around 20 inches.

What is the maximum range of an AR-15?

The maximum range of an AR-15 — the farthest distance a bullet can travel — is approximately 3,000 yards or about 1.7 miles. But it's crucial to note that the bullet loses its lethal potential long before it reaches this distance.

Is it legal to shoot an AR-15 at long distances?

Laws vary widely depending on location, so it's always best to check with local regulations. However, in general, shooting an AR-15 at long distances is not illegal as long as it's done safely at an appropriate shooting range or on private property.

Can an AR-15 shoot accurately beyond its effective range?

While it's possible to hit targets beyond the AR-15's effective range, accuracy, and consistency significantly decrease due to factors such as bullet drop and wind drift.

How can I improve my accuracy at longer ranges with an AR-15?

Improving accuracy at longer ranges often involves practice, the use of quality ammunition, optimizing the rifle setup (like barrel length and twist rate), and learning to account for factors like wind and bullet drop.

What is the difference between the effective range and maximum range of an AR-15?

The effective range of an AR-15 is the distance at which a shooter can consistently hit a target, while the maximum range is the farthest distance the bullet can travel, regardless of accuracy.

How do environmental factors like wind and temperature affect the range of an AR-15

Environmental factors can significantly affect the bullet's trajectory and speed. Wind can push the bullet off course, while temperature and humidity can affect air density, which influences how much resistance the bullet encounters during flight.

How Far Can A Bullet Travel?

Bullet, Gun, Rifle

Guns pack a lot of energy into a tiny area, meaning the bullets they shoot move fast and go far until they hit something. If that something is Teddy Roosevelt, business will carry on as usual, but generally, being on the receiving end of a bullet is bad news.

Just how far can a bullet travel once the trigger is pulled? It will depend on what you're shooting with.

Here's how far different bullets can travel

Each different firearm and bullet will have a different range, with tons of other variables including weather, windspeed, the trajectory, and so on. For the sake of consistency, we're going to assume that you are aiming for max distance with whatever gun and bullet you choose, and that you've chosen a fairly standard shooting apparatus. According to the  National Rifle Association , if you're going for distance, the optimal angle of elevation is around 30 degrees from horizontal.

The NRA says that for a 9 mm handgun, the most popular handgun according to  Guns.com , a bullet will travel up to 2,130 yards, or about 1.2 miles. For a Colt .45, the next most popular handgun, you're looking at about 1,850 yards, which is just about 1 mile.

Of course, handguns aren't long-distance firearms. Rifles are built to be more accurate from greater distances. The notorious AR-15 rifle is the most popular, according to the NRA, and its maximum range is around 3,840 yards, or 2.2 miles. Bear in mind, those of you with dreams of long-distance hunting, that maximum range is far from effective range, so the odds of hitting a target at that distance are slim.

If you're wondering what the maximum distance is that a gun has ever been used effectively,  BBC  says it's 3,870 yards, just over 2.2 miles. A Canadian special forces  sniper  made the shot in Iraq in 2017, killing an Islamic State militant.

So there you have it. Since the NRA has done the math, you don't have to. Please remember that guns should be handled with extreme care and proper training, and that gun ownership and use should be taken very seriously.

The Bullet Flight Range calculator computes the maximum range (horizontal distance) traveled by a bullet based on the muzzle velocity ( V ), elevation angle ( α ), shooter height ( h ), and the acceleration due to gravity . Note, this does not account for air resistance or wind factors.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • ( V )  Muzzle Velocity
  • ( α )  Elevation Angle above the horizon.
  • ( h )  Shooter Height

Max Bullet Range (R): The calculator returns the maximum distance down range in feet.  However, this can be automatically converted to other distance units (e.g. miles or meters) via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The range of a bullet can be estimated using basic physics. Once the bullet is fired at a specific muzzle velocity, gravity immediately starts to pull the bullet down toward the center of the Earth.  Wind resistance slows the bullet, and wind direction will put it off target.  This calculator only accounts for the pull of gravity, but it does account for the elevation angle and the shooter height, since both, along with muzzle velocity and the force of gravity, pay a major impact in the flight of the bullet.

The Maximum Ballistic Range equation is:

     `R = ((V • sinθ + sqrt( (V •sinθ)² + (2•g•h))) / g) • cosθ•V`

  • R is the max ballistic range
  • V is the initial velocity
  • θ is the launch angle
  • h is the initial height or elevation above the plane
  • g is the acceleration due to gravity

This formula algebraically equivalent in the following form:

         `R = V^2/(2g)  * ( 1 + sqrt(1 + (2gh)/(v^2sin^2θ)))*sin2θ`

The Ballistic Range equation calculates the horizontal displacement (distance) of an object in free flight.  It only takes into account the initial velocity and launch angle (also knows as the loft) and the effects of gravity through an acceleration towards the ground.  This formula does not take into account other factors such as the force of drag .  A default is provided for the acceleration due to gravity of 9.80665 m/s 2 which is mean acceleration (at all latitudes) for sea level on Earth.

Acceleration Due to gravity

The force of gravity pulls masses towards each other.  In the case of small objects (e.g. you, an arrow or the Space Shuttle) verses planetary objects (e.g. the Earth or Moon), the difference in masses results in a negligible acceleration of the large object toward the small.  Acceleration due to gravity changes based on the mass of the attracting object (e.g. the Earth 9.8 m/s 2 verses the moon1.6 m/s 2 ) and the distance from the center of mass.  For example, since the Earth is not a perfect sphere, and more closely represented as an oblate spheroid, acceleration due to Earth gravity as Sea Level is more accurately calculated based on latitude. The international gravity formula provides an acceleration due to gravity based on latitude.

How Far Can a 223 Bullet Travel? — Max Range & Velocity

  • Christopher Graham
  • Updated May 17, 2023

How Far Can a 223 Bullet Travel

The .223 Remington was first launched in 1963 with the Remington model 760 pump-action rifle. It was considered as a varmint cartridge then.

A little while after, the .223 bullet started to be used by the US Military as an experimental cartridge in 1964. And like the NATO military cartridge (5.56x45mm), the .223 Remington Magnum is a commercial type.

It’s one of the most popular rifle cartridges for Americans and has received high appreciation through the years. But why exactly does the .223 Remington have such a big following?

.223 Remington Rifle Types

Handloading the .223, usage depending on level of expertise.

There are two main types of rifles.

The first category is called a Varmint Rifle which is a bolt-action type and has 1-12-inch of rifling twist for bullets that range from 2.5 to 3.9 grams.

Varmint rifle

The second category is called a Semi-Automatic Rifle which you can find in twist rates such as 1-7-inch, 1-8-inch, and 1-9-inch. Most people in the US use this type for varmint hunting, self-defense, home defense, and law enforcement.

The semi-automatic rifle category also comes in AR-15 and Ruger Mini-14 types.

The .223 bullet has about 50-grain varmint bullets so you can hunt various animals such as gophers, ground squirrels, and prairie dogs for a distance of 400 yards.

For larger animals like rock chucks and groundhogs, if you shoot within the 300-yard range, then you may hit the target because of the higher impact velocities, though.

However, you can still hunt deer within 150 yards since the higher impact velocities are strong enough to take effect.

The 1-14-inch is too slow for the 55-grain bullets when you load it initially. Most barrels of the .223 bullet have a slow rifling twist for the 1-12-inch. With its rate, it’s more suitable with bullets that have 55 grains or less.

BUYING OPTIONS: » Best Price on OpticsPlanet « » Check Price on Cabelas «

However, some shooters find that the 1-12-inch twist can’t stabilize heavier bullets for better accuracy. Despite this, twisted barrels for the .223 bullet are still the most popular choice.

With the style of tactical bolt-action rifles, the twist rate is 1-9-inch. On one hand, the twist rate of some ARs and other .223 rifles are 1-7-inch. This type is made for long-range shooting and targeting.

Now, why do you need to analyze those twist rates? It’s because it is extremely important that you know how well your own .223 Remington performs to really know how far a .223 bullet actually travels.

How to Use a .223 Bullet

Loading revolver chamber

There is a simple rule to draw close attention to.

First, if you want to shoot the heaviest bullet (which starts from 50 grains), then the 1-12-inch twist is an accurate option.

Second, if you want to shoot bullets from 60 grains, then get the 1-9-inch of twist. The 1-9-inch is a good choice for stabilizing the grain bullets (from 35 to 40) to meet smaller targets. But if you want to hit with long and heavy bullets, then you should get the 1-7-inch or 1-8-inch twists.

There are some minor differences between the twists that most people aren’t aware of though. To play deer-sized game, you need to be careful about the twist rate.

Loading bullets

For handloading, you should stick with fast powders that have burn rates between Hodgdon’s Varget and Alliant’s Reloader 7. Alliant is a new powder designed for ARs and the .223 Remington. It is also called AR Comp.

Among all the other popular modern rifle cartridges, the .223 Remington is the least expensive. Shooters can use it for higher targets, especially in three-gun matches or in the service rifle category.

Moreover, you can also use the .223 Remington as a survival rifle.

For newbies who want to learn the foundations of shooting, the .222 is the best option.

For experienced shooters, you can choose the .223 bullet to improve your bullet’s path.

The .223 Remington will improve the ballistic coefficients, bullet drop , wind drift, accurate ammunition, handloads, and accuracy of the rifles, especially for long-range shooting.

You’ll also be able to practice your marksmanship skills.

Finally, other hunters will benefit from huge variants of the .223 Remington which have been made in many years.

See the table below comparing the maximum range of the ammunition per handgun.

Loading bullet

There is a significant number of shooters that think the .223 Remington is an excellent cartridge that does the job. And this is why the .223 Remington is one of America’s most incredible cartridges.

If you have only a rifle for one cartridge, then you could definitely choose the .223 Remington. With it, you’ll get to target games such as varmints and deer.

It’s also not difficult to load and shoot with the .223 Remington. However, you should also first understand its limitations before using it.

Everything else also depends on how well experienced you are with your gun skills. The .223 Remington can actually reach distances of 3,875 yards when used well.

3.6 Maximum Horizontal Range of a Gun

The maximum distance that a gun will shoot in some direction and the barrel elevation angle necessary for the bullet to reach that maximum distance are questions that arise often when an outdoor shooting range is being designed, particularly in an urban or suburban area. The maximum ranges can be more than a mile for some handgun bullets and more than 4.5 miles for some rifle bullets. It is necessary quite often to place barriers forward and above the firing lines to block bullets accidentally discharged from elevated guns from traveling far downrange to threaten inhabitants, homes, or business establishments.

Infinity  will calculate the maximum range distance for any cartridge, either horizontally or along any reference slope with either a positive or negative inclination angle, together with the bore elevation angle of the gun necessary for the bullet to reach that maximum range. A reference slope is an upward or downward slope along which the maximum range must be calculated. This feature is incorporated in  Infinity  because shooting ranges are often located on a hillside or in a valley, and the maximum range in an upward or downward direction is needed. The maximum range of any particular cartridge of course varies with shooting conditions, especially with altitude of the firing point and with the inclination angle of the reference slope and also with atmospheric conditions at the firing location.

The maximum range computation capability in  Infinity  is reached by selecting the “Maximum Range” entry in the “Operations” dropdown menu. For the cartridge, load and shooting conditions of interest, a reference trajectory need not be calculated. However, those conditions must be entered in the “Trajectory Parameters” and Environment Parameters” lists in the sidebar that appears on the monitor screen in the “Trajectory” operation. After those conditions are entered, the user can proceed directly to the “Maximum Range” operation. Key parameters for the “Maximum Range” operation appear in a sidebar in this mode and can be changed to examine the effects of varying any of these parameters.

The examples calculated below show the surprising maximum range of just a single handgun cartridge, the 45 ACP loaded with Sierra’s 230 grain Full Metal Jacket Match bullet to a muzzle velocity of 850 fps under several  variations of firing conditions. All these examples are calculated for standard atmospheric conditions, of course adjusted for altitude automatically within   Infinity .

It is evident that the maximum horizontal range of this cartridge is well over a mile (1760 yards) and that it varies significantly with the altitude of the firing point. It is also quite apparent that the reference slope angle has a large effect on the maximum range.

Note also that the bore elevation angle is with respect to the local level at the firing point, not with respect to the reference slope. A common misconception among many shooters is that the bore elevation angle that maximizes the horizontal range is 45 degrees. It may be seen that for this 45 ACP cartridge that angle is 33 degrees. A 45 degree bore elevation angle would maximize the range if the gun were fired in a vacuum. Air drag, however, changes the physics of the trajectory dramatically. It turns out that the bore elevation angle for maximum horizontal range is around 30 degrees for all small arms bullets fired on the surface of the earth.

300 Blackout Effective Range [9″ and 16″ Barrels]

How far is 300 blackout effective?

The 300 Black is a unique ammunition developed by AAC ( Advanced Armament Corporation) that combines a 30 caliber projectile with a 5.56 casing body.

By incorporating a 30 caliber projectile, it offers a wide range of weight options, spanning from 110 grains to 220 grains. This versatility enables the rounds to be either subsonic or supersonic, while still ensuring reliable cycling of the weapon even when shooting suppressed.

We're going to focus on the effective range of the 300 Blackout, especially when fired from a 9" barrel or a 16" barrel on an AR-15 platform .

Effective range is the maximum distance at which a bullet can accurately hit a target and achieve the desired effect. By the U.S. Army standard, it can neutralize an enemy.

The 300 Blackout has a variety of effective ranges depending on the load you are using. Subsonic 300 Blackout loads have less range than supersonic loads.

Some loads send bullets faster than the sound barrier. These bullets travel in a straighter line and are less affected by the wind. However, they don't carry as much energy far away.

300 blackout ammo

For a fair comparison, the Hornady V-Max 110-grain load (zeroed at 100 yards through 16 inches of barrel) has a muzzle velocity of 2,375 fps. This .30-caliber bullet drops less than 9 feet at 500 yards (21 feet less than the subsonic version) and carries 362-foot-pounds of energy there. At 300 yards, the holdover is only 23.4 inches.

These numbers show that it shoots straighter than the subsonic 300 Blackout load. On the other hand, its light weight means it loses energy as it travels.

300 Blackout Bullet Drop Data Table

Here's a table that lists the bullet drop data along with ballistic energy (ft lb) for different barrel lengths and distances:

How It Compares To Other 30 Caliber Bullet

300 blk vs 308 chart

Credit Sniper Country Studies

The substantial variance in bullet drop between the two subsonic .300 BLK rounds and the other 300 BLK and .308 Win rounds. At a distance of 200 yards, the subsonic .300 BLK rounds exhibit an approximate 25-inch greater drop compared to the rest, and this difference extends to nearly 100 inches at the 300-yard mark. It's crucial to understand that this disparity doesn't imply inferiority; rather, it highlights that these rounds are not optimized for long-range shooting.

Turning our attention to the supersonic .300 BLK rounds, their behavior aligns more closely with the .308 Win rounds at 200 yards, albeit with a slightly higher bullet drop of approximately 4-5 inches. However, this discrepancy becomes more pronounced as the bullets reach the 300-yard mark, with the .300 BLK rounds experiencing a 15-20-inch greater drop than the .308 Win rounds. This data underscores the distinction in ballistic performance between these rounds at extended distances.

300 Blackout Effective Range For 9" Barrel

brownells brn 180 300 blackout

From a 9-inch barrel, the 300 AAC Blackout 125 grain bullet has a maximum effective range of 440 meters. This is because the bullet drops 100 inches at 410 meters, drifts 41 inches at 470 meters, and has 291 foot-pounds of energy at 625 meters.

Most 9" 300 blackout barrels can achieve this performance under normal shooting conditions unless stated otherwise.

300 Blackout Effective Range For 16" Barrel

The maximum effective range for 300 blackout when fired from a 16" barrel is 460 meters with maximum muzzle velocity, or 503 yards. This is the farthest distance you can expect to hit your target accurately with this cartridge. But remember, the 300 Blackout might not keep at least 260 ft lbs of energy at every point throughout that range.

bcm recce 16

For self-defense in the civilian world, to get the desired effect, the bullet has to be able to transfer at least 260 ft lbs of energy to its target at its maximum range. And for deer hunting, you want your bullet to hit with at least 1,000 ft lbs of energy for a quick and humane kill.

Lighter weight prevents them from carrying an equivalent level of energy at longer distances.

hornday vmax 30 cal

For a fair comparison, let's consider the Hornady V-Max 110-grain load, which is also zeroed at 100 yards using a 16-inch barrel. This particular load achieves a muzzle velocity of 2,375 fps. At 500 yards, the .30-caliber bullet drops by less than 9 feet (21 feet less compared to the subsonic 300 blackout effective range) while retaining 362-foot-pounds of energy. At 300 yards, the required holdover is only 23.4 inches.

These numbers clearly demonstrate that the load with higher velocity has a flatter trajectory compared to the subsonic load. Conversely, its lightweight projectile loses energy at a faster rate downrange, which is why Hornady designates it as suitable for target shooting and varmint hunting.

300 Blackout Ballistic Energy

The .308 rounds significantly outperform the 300 BLK rounds in general, with over 1,000 foot-pounds more energy than the highest-performing 300 BLK round. This ballistic trend remains consistent from the muzzle out to 500 yards.

Additionally, it's evident that the 300 BLK supersonic rounds possess much higher muzzle energy than the subsonic rounds, which is expected. The subsonic rounds, however, maintain their bullet energy downrange at a more consistent rate than the supersonic rounds, resulting in both categories being closely clustered at the 500-yard mark. Nevertheless, for medium to longer-range shots, the supersonic rounds offer distinct advantages over the 300 blackout subsonic rounds.
