Little Simz: The Music Week Interview

Little Simz: The Music Week Interview

In 2019, Little Simz won an Ivor Novello and a Mercury Prize nod for her third album, Grey Area. To top it, she’s reached further into her soul than ever before for Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, her strongest statement yet.  On February 8, 2022, Simz won the 2022 BRIT Award for Best New Artist.  Music Week meets the artist, plus manager Robert Swerdlow, AWAL president Paul Hitchman and his team, to find out how an independent rapper from North London came to stand on the brink of a global breakthrough...

Sometimes, to become a global star, you have to go back to your roots. Sometimes, in order to make music that will connect with millions of people, you need to look deep inside. This is where UK rapper Little Simz is now. The buzz around her fourth album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (due via her own Age 101 label in partnership with AWAL on September 3), is building and the expectation is that it will make her a global star. Its maker is telling Music Week about how she made the record with some of her oldest friends and trying to explain that she doesn’t always like to talk about how she feels. “There’s a lot going on in this album,” says the rapper, real name Simbiatu Ajikawo. “But I guess there’s also a lot going on in my mind. I’m not the most talkative person in real life. So sometimes that makes me a little hard to read or whatnot. But when I get to my art, when I start writing, it all just comes up.” Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is a very honest album, covering all those things in her mind, from growing up in inner London, her thoughts on her absent father and her place in the world as a Black British woman. She also addresses, on the very first track, the apparent contradiction between her private life and public art. ‘I hate that these conversations are surfaced,’ she raps on Introvert. ‘ Simz the artist or Simbi the person? To you I’m smiling but really I’m hurting ’. She, like most artists, is trying not to think too hard about how the album might be received. “Honestly,” she says, “I will drive myself nuts if I try to think too deeply about the success of it, or what it’s going to be or what it’s going to define. I’ve kind of done my part, you know?” The team around her, however, have already started running with the baton, working to get as many listeners as possible to hear an album they believe will be era-defining. “From our perspective this is one of the most important records we’ve ever worked with,” says Paul Hitchman, president of AWAL . Little Simz signed with AWAL in 2018. They distribute and promote her music, but she retains the rights – as do all of their artists – and releases through her own Age 101 imprint. “She has made a truly extraordinary and outstanding record,” Hitchman says. “It’s a big artistic statement and we think it establishes Simz as one of the most important artists in the UK of her generation. We’re very proud to be part of that, and to be a partner for her. And we feel a responsibility to make sure that the record, and the story that she tells on it, are given as much push and support as possible, to reach as wide an audience as possible, because that’s what it deserves.” “The new album is absolutely mind-blowing,” says Helen Barrass, AWAL’s senior marketing director. “Working on it will be a career highlight.” For AWAL marketing director Stephanie Achigbu, the record is all about the strength of Simz’s storytelling. “She knows she’s fucking brilliant and she’s not afraid to say it,” says Achigbu. “So the album empowers other people to believe that about themselves as well. And I really do believe it moves people in different ways… I’ve had people be reduced to tears because it’s that powerful.” Little Simz’s manager Robert Swerdlow of Starwood Management puts it very simply. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime record,” he says.

Simbiatu Ajikawo was born and raised in North London. She’s an Arsenal fan. The first time she played Islington’s O2 Academy she was just 10 years old. Her youth club had put on a showcase and MC Simz, as she was then called, was one of the performers. From that point, her mind was set on music. Throughout her teens she recorded and uploaded music. She also acted, appearing in CBBC fantasy series Spirit Warriors and E4’s comedy drama Youngers. She still acts. She joined the cast of Top Boy in 2019, appearing alongside grime legend Kano and Ashley Walters of So Solid Crew. Her character, Shelley, will appear in the forthcoming series. “And I have more to sink my teeth into this time,” she reveals. “It was a nice vibe on set, but I was only going in every other day because we were shooting with Covid restrictions.” Little Simz enjoys acting, but music is her first love. “When I’m in the studio I’m 100% me,” she says. “But on set, I’m in character. It allows me to be creative in a different way.” Her debut album, A Curious Tale Of Trials + Persons, was released in 2015 when she was 21, followed the next year by Stillness In Wonderland. Both releases were low-key, but they marked the first outing of an artist who has become a vital force in British music. “She became the first UK rapper to make the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, won Independent Album Of The Year at the 2016 AIM Awards, and was the first independent rapper to be a Vevo Lift artist,” says Barrass, recalling the early music industry interest in Little Simz.

In 2017, Simz collaborated and toured with Gorillaz and had a hat tip from Kendrick Lamar. Then in 2019, she released Grey Area (27,507 sales to date, according to the Official Charts Company). She wrote it whilst burnt out by touring, and dealing with the death of one friend and the imprisonment of another. It was a raw record, emotionally, much more than her previous releases. The critical reception was rapturous and it was nominated for the Mercury Prize and won Best Album at the Ivor Novello Awards . Its impact continues to help boost her profile, and her monthly Spotify listener count stands at an impressive 4,958,205. Her weekly streams on the platform have risen from around 700,00 before this campaign to more than 3 million. Simz is still proud of her last album. She’s wearing a promotional Grey Area T-shirt as she speaks to Music Week via Zoom, although she does say, “I just have it on when I’m at home.” Little Simz is very much at home with AWAL, and Helen Barrass has worked with her since the early days. “From the start of our journey in 2015, it was very clear that Little Simz was a rising star with determination and a clear vision,” she says. Now, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is standing on the platform built by Grey Area. There are more people who want to hear it, but its maker has dug even deeper into her psyche to make it. The track I Love You, I Hate You, she says, “Touches on my relationship, or non-relationship, with my absent father. “I haven’t really discussed that before in my music,” she continues. “So I was really putting myself out there. At first I kind of struggled with that song because I didn’t want to give my dad the stage like that. But then I realised that it’s not actually about him. It’s about me and how my life has been affected. I also don’t want to walk around with this anger, this negative feeling, towards someone I don’t even know. Writing the song was me freeing up that space. And whether or not he hears it, is like, you know… It’s whatever.” Authenticity is the key to Little Simz. Indeed, Simz stands apart from her peers in the thriving UK scene and beyond for her emotional honesty and the fact that, as a Black British woman, she has a different story to tell. “The themes she explores are so relevant to right now,” says AWAL’s Achigbu. “They are personally relevant to me as a young Black woman who also grew up in inner-city London, but I believe everyone will find something that speaks to them.” Achigbu mentions her own parents, who are Nigerian like Simz’s mother, and “having to stand firm in my dreams” when she wanted to work in music, rather than taking a traditionally respectable route and becoming a doctor or a lawyer. “And Simz touches on that in the album, and then on another track she touches on knife crime in London,” Achigbu says. “Then there’s racial injustice and the uncertainty of being in your 20s and then there’s empowerment as well. She covers it all.” For the marketing campaign, the team have chosen to focus in on Simz’s roots. One of the first PR activations involved sending gift baskets, filled with self-care treats (“Because everyone is introverted sometimes,” says Achigbu) from independent Black-owned businesses. The twist was that these baskets only went to women Little Simz found inspirational, which included her mother and other members of her family. She’s also being booked in for podcasts, alongside the more obvious TV and radio spots (BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and 6 Music are longtime fans). The idea being that the podcast format will allow Simz to express herself more fully and honestly, in keeping with the mood of the album. Recently, Little Simz appeared on The Receipts podcast. Hosts Tolani Shoneye, Audrey Indome and Milena Sanchez have tens of thousands of listeners and were recently described by The Guardian as “the new voices of British podcasting”. Little Simz is smack in their target demographic and also a fan. She dropped easily into the raucous studio atmosphere. “I don’t have loads of female friends, to be honest,” she said, hesitating. “But now there’s us!” countered the hosts, the laughter starting up again. Taken in isolation, that comment could make Little Simz seem like a boys’ girl. But her most recent single Woman (feat. Cleo Sol) puts paid to that. With a powerful video featuring her cousin and school friends dancing, the track gives shout-outs to successful Black women the world over, country by country, with Simz repeating the refrain, ‘ Woman to woman I just want to see you glow ’. The video is about to break the three million views mark on YouTube. Eve Fairley-Chickwe, senior A&R director at AWAL, says Woman is, “One of those records where you remember exactly where you were the first time you heard it,” adding that Little Simz has, “always been a visionary, she is her own A&R!” Simz has also, inadvertently, become the sound of TikTok feminism. Her 2019 track Venom has been used as a sound 683,7000 times on the platform, mostly by women rapping along to lines such as, ‘ Never givin’ credit where it ’s due ’ cause you don ’ t like pussy in power ’, before turning to camera and delivering the punch of ‘ venom ’ with triumphant smiles. In April this year, up to 20,000 videos were being created each week and news reached AWAL of people getting Venom tattoos, says Achigbu. “It is definitely mad because I wasn’t even trying to promote it!” says Simz. “But when I was writing the lyric I knew it was either going to go crazy, or it was going to go straight over people’s heads.” The delayed reaction, she confides, is “very, very cool.” When Simz finally created an account on the platform she gained 150,000 followers overnight. Her count now stands at 485,000, with a further 350,000 on Instagram, 78,500 on Twitter and 95,479 on Facebook. Across all of her social media output, realness is always paramount. “We said we weren’t expecting her to do any dance routines or anything that really wasn’t her,” says Achigbu. “We want to give behind-the-scenes access, not have everything perfect, let her be herself. She’s also really good at communicating on Twitter.” As the campaign for Sometimes I Might Be Introvert builds, Little Simz has consulted her fans about it along the way. The plan, explains Achigbu, is to make fans feel as though they are part of the process. It’s a kind of meta-marketing that doesn’t position Little Simz as an unreachable star, rather as a creative sharing her work with equals. It’s clever, but it is also, once again, authentic. The picture Simz and her team at AWAL are painting is of a woman with a strong sense of community and of the place and the people that created her.

And the people that are helping facilitate her artistic journey are also a hugely important part of the Little Simz mix. Firstly, there’s Robert Swerdlow of Starwood Management . Simz beams when she talks about him. The rapper had been navigating her career on her own, acting as her own manager throughout the whole campaign for Grey Area, and was looking for advice. She was introduced to Swerdlow by Michael Kiwanuka, who won the Mercury Prize last year. “I was managing my career and trying to be an artist and a label and it was a lot,” she remembers. “So I had been looking for advice, but I just ended up saying, ‘Will you do it?’ And it is a blessing, for sure, to have someone who is so knowledgeable, but also open to learning and doing new things too.” Swerdlow is even more complimentary. “Very rarely do you get an artist who can work in a global, smart and culturally relevant musical space and stand up 100% for independence,” he says. “And Simz never compromises on any creative level, from music, to marketing, identity, aesthetic and video making.” Then there’s the relationship she has with producer Inflo. Real name Dean Josiah Cover, Inflo has worked with many artists, including Michael Kiwanuka, but his relationship with Simz is special. “He’s one of a kind, he’s my boy,” she says. “We’ve known each other since we were little, we’re very tight, our families know each other, we went to the same youth club. He’s been sending me beats for seven or eight years.” Inflo produced Grey Area and was Simz’s musical partner for Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, too. The two started working in Los Angeles, brainstorming and experimenting. “We were just rocking up in the morning, picking up a green juice on the way,” she says. But the looming threat of a pandemic-related travel freeze meant they cut short their stay. They picked things up again back in London. “He’s very trusting of me in the studio,” she says. “We can push each other to explore and try different things. We’re never boxed into anything, just because I rap and what I do is rooted in hip-hop, we can still dive into different styles like jazz or funk or soul.” Simz’s ability to flutter between genres and moods is key to her appeal, and she credits Inflo’s influence over it to the length of their friendship. “It’s not like he knows me for just one thing,” she says. In addition to Inflo, there’s also her creative director Jeremy Cole.

“I’ve worked with him for 10 years,” she says. “He was shooting my videos when I had no budget, just whipping out a camera.” Then there’s Tilla, Little Simz’s right-hand man,“From when he was 12 and I was 15. He just helps me out with stuff day-to-day.” Simz also has kind words for Neicee Oakley, her tour manager: “She’s the best, man, really just holds me down and makes sure whatever we do is of a level and to a certain standard.” “I take great pleasure in managing her team as well,” says Swerdlow. “Simz has a very creative team around her who resonate at the same frequency as she does, like a really switched-on and in-sync football team.” “I’m someone that wants to win with people, you know? I think it’s way more fun if we’re all in this shit together,” says Simz. “If you’ve got something going on, I’m pulling it up, I’m supporting it.” For all her supportive and collaborative instincts, the word that comes up most frequently when people talk about Little Simz is independent. “I think artists do their best work when they’re empowered,” says Paul Hitchman. “Our whole purpose at AWAL is to partner with independent artists and help them tell stories that really matter and that have an impact on culture. And Simz embodies all of that. “Traditionally, there was the concept of the independent label and that had some meaning,” continues Hitchman, “but I think what’s come to the fore in the last couple of years is the fresher, newer concept of the independent artist. And I think Simz absolutely defines that. She’s creatively in control and, from a business perspective, she’s in charge. She owns her own rights, we’re there to support and partner with her, and we see it as a true partnership.”

In May of this year, Sony Music acquired AWAL along with Kobalt’s Neighbouring Rights business. But Swerdlow stresses that there was no concern on his part, or on Little Simz’s. “We talked about it for 60 seconds, and then carried on,” he says. “Business as usual. I’ve been around too long to knee-jerk and get upset when changes happen.” Little Simz says she has been approached by majors , but has always turned them down. “It always sounds very appealing when you’re being wined and dined and promised things,” she says. “But I also have friends and peers who are on major labels and I talked to them. It’s not as if they say anything crazy or wild, but I wanted to get all the perspectives. So I don’t actually know what it is to be a signed artist. I mean, I might have it all backwards. I might be missing a trick, but I think I’ve found something that works for me. It’s a lot of hard work, but I’m definitely a stairs person and not on the escalator journey. It’s super-rewarding and I get to do what I want.” She also stands slightly apart in the current UK rap scene, and happily so “I think everyone is doing really well at the moment,” she says. “I feel like hip-hop, rap and drill are all really at the forefront at the minute. It seems like there’s good waves of new artists and talent coming through and actually getting the look-ins and the radio plays and everything. We’ve just got really good taste over here, and talent. Across the board, too, even with movies. Half the blockbuster films, it’s British actors leading. I just put it down to us being super-talented.” So, where does Little Simz see herself in all of this? “I don’t know, really, it’s a bit lone wolf vibes, innit?” she answers. “I just like doing my thing over here. I’m not super-concerned about following a particular trend or sound. I just do what I feel I would want to hear, or what is cool to me, and what gets me excited.” “The musical ambition of the album is extraordinary,” says Hitchman. “All the different influences and genres, it goes from orchestras, choirs to the toughest of beats. And then the lyrics and the performance, and the story.” When asked if she believes she’s made the defining album of 2021, Little Simz freezes with embarrassment and pulls at her T-shirt before collecting herself. “There have been so many great albums this year already,” she says. “It’s just sick to even be a part of that conversation. People are anticipating it and they’re excited for it.” And so, as release day edges closer, the buzz is growing. Among the music industry, the scores of Venom-dripping TikTokers and indeed everyone around Little Simz, who can sense that, with Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, she is moving one step closer to greatness. “Sometimes people look at me and think, ‘Oh, well, she’s in her own lane’, but it’s not that I try to be different, I’m just doing me,” says Simz, ending by emphasisng the point that she only does what comes naturally. “This album is super-ambitious, but I’ve always been that way inclined...”

Designing Little Simz: NO THANK YOU TOUR

Core members of Little Simz’s white shirt and black tie-clad road crew discuss the ‘extravagance in simplicity’ approach to the artist’s latest landmark live campaign…

Hot on the heels of a successful tour of the US and Europe, Little Simz and her production team headed to London’s Alexandra Palace for back-to-back, sold-out hometown shows – commemorating a successful 2023 on the touring circuit and signifying the artist’s steady rise to stardom, following the release of her fourth studio album, No Thank You . With the flight cases loaded-out and tour truck’s doors slammed firmly shut, TPi checked in with core members of the aptly white shirt and black tie-clad crew – a nod to the album’s iconography and now the de facto stage and audience attire.

“It’s been some journey,” recalled Production Manager, Eric ‘EZ’ Wade, who has been an integral cog in the Little Simz live touring machine since the early days, witnessing the artist’s live output evolve in scale, from headlining the small room at EartH Hackney through to headlining two back-to-back, sold-out dates at the Ally Pally in the space of four years. “The growth speaks for itself. Once you gain greater recognition, your capability to represent and creatively portray an artist is enhanced. We always step it up for hometown London shows.”

Colour Sound Experiment supplied lighting and rigging infrastructure and crew, while 4Wall Entertainment provided video equipment and on-site support to fulfil the creative brief. “Colour Sound Experiment and I have a long-standing history, all our artists go through them, depending on availability,” EZ explained. “I’ve been looking to work with 4Wall for a long time, but I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity, and they came through en force and went above and beyond to support the vision of the show.

Little Simz Announces 2023 North American Tour

Little Simz has announced a Fall 2023 tour, marking her first North American dates since 2019.

Kicking off in Chicago on September 20th, the 10-city trek will also make stops in Atlanta, Portland, Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal, and more before wrapping in New York City on October 13th. See the full schedule below.

Tickets are available via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

The British-Nigerian rapper had originally planned to play many of these cities last year, but canceled that tour while citing financial and mental strain. Instead, she put out another excellent album in NO THANK YOU and its accompanying short film of the same name.

More recently, Little Simz performed “Heart on Fire” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and released a tour documentary called On Stage Off Stage .

Little Simz, freer than ever with 'No Thank You'

The British rapper Little Simz , December 11, 2022.

Little Simz, whose real name is Simbiatu "Simbi" Ajikawo, had just been awarded the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize when she decided in mid-December to release an unexpected fifth album, No Thank You . An independent artist for a dozen years, and a brilliant actress in the Top Boy series which airs on Netflix, the 28-year-old British rapper is finally getting recognition in her home country.

She even won a Brit Award as a new British artist in February 2022. She brought her mother, of Nigerian origin, to accept the award on stage: "Look, Mum, what you've done," said the young woman, before continuing: "I'm from North London. I grew up on a council estate. I'm an independent artist, and being here tonight is a blessing. I'm so grateful."

This was one of the first awards she received for her remarkable fourth record, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert , released in September 2021. Since then, the artist has not felt as indebted to the British record industry.

Change of attitude

In the opening track on the album No Thank You , titled "Angel" – performed with singer Cleo Sol and produced by her childhood friend Inflo – she recalls her separation from her manager, and her tour in the United States, canceled to "protect her mental health." On this album, she has returned to the essence of her art, using symphonic orchestras, and mixing African percussions with gospel choirs. With her characteristic energy, she denounces the scourges that still affect her audience: the circulation of knives in the streets of London, the racism that also seeps into the record industry, too slow to recognize the talent of British black artists, and also depression, wondering: "Why is it still a taboo?"

Little Simz might sound ungrateful, but early on in this record she reveals the reasons for this change in attitude. She left a manager who was making decisions "on her behalf," and describes the impact that systemic racism has had on her. From the very first rhymes, she affirms: "I was never interested in being immortal," even though she admits on No Thank You – which hijacks the Canadian artist Drake's hit God's Plan – that she gave in to the sirens and mirages of fame for a time. On this album, she has returned to what she does best: unformatted tracks exploring her soul and extending her musical journey with Inflo, like the remarkable "Silhouette" and "X."

The Quiet Power Of Little Simz

From walking the runway at Miu Miu to storming the stage at Glastonbury, the summer of 2024 belongs to Little Simz. Hattie Collins meets the award-winning rapper at her north-London office to hear how the introvert is coming to terms with her biggest moment yet.

Simbiatu ‘Simbi’ Abisola Abiola Ajikawo didn’t so much arrive as appear at her north-London office. One moment she’s not here, the next she is, loping in alone, all 5’10” of her, dressed in black boots, black bomber, Carhartt cargos and Seventh hoodie, her long dreads tucked under a plain New Era cap and a tranquil smile on her face, as she greets her PA, PR and me, her inquisitor for the next couple of hours.

As her 2021 Mercury Prize-winning album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert attested (see what she did there with the acronym?), Little Simz can be shy, yet she exudes a calm confidence. She’s all ‘Great to see you’ and warm hugs, responding politely to enquiries about the vinyl on the coffee table – Prince’s 'Purple Rain', Arlo Parks’ 'My Soft Machine' and Frank Ocean’s highly covetable 'Channel Orange' – and the art on the walls. One is an expressionist piece by the Nigerian painter and skater Olaolu Slawn and artist Teoni, and another a joyous landscape painting of young people by her friend Kaiya Jaid.

‘Erm, yeah, we’ve got the Mercury, the NMEs, Mobos, the Ivor Novellos...’ Simz says softly of the battalion of trophies that guard the recess of one wall. And the Brit for Best New Artist, 2022? ‘It’s with my mum. Yeah, she’s holding onto that one.’ Who could forget Mummy Simz, the true star of the Brit Awards 2022? ‘This is all her doing.’ We tilt our necks, contemplating the awards. They’re very impressive, I observe. A soft murmur. ‘I think they’re just...’ She motions her arms. ‘...in the space.’ She pauses, changing tack as we head towards an expansive sofa. ‘Sometimes I do catch myself looking at them and thinking, wow, once upon a time that was so empty, and it just keeps... filling up.’

There will be more to come. Since she released her first mixtape in 2010 at the age of 14, Simz’s output has been almost patholog- ically prolific. A rapper first and foremost, she’s dropped five albums (a sixth is on the way), four mixtapes and 11 EPs, which, between them, have earned 17 major awards and numerous nominations. That’s two records every one year average, to paraphrase one of her heroes, Jay-Z. ‘For as long as I can remember, I’ve always put out music. From Bandcamp to MySpace to Soundcloud, it’s so instilled in me,’ she insists, genuinely bewildered by observations that her work rate is rapacious. ‘I’ve built everything brick by brick. I make music that represents a certain point in my life, and I let it go. I’m a consistent person, whether that’s my friendships, my family or my work, so it’s more a character thing, I think.’

little simz on the cover of june issue for elle uk

Earlier this year she released her eleventh EP, 'Drop 7', an exuberant electronic offering with her college pal, the producer Jakwob. Unlike her albums, Simz’s EPs don’t tend to reflect on social ills, the self, the struggle. They’re instead a reset, a celebration, a chance for Simz to simply spit. ‘It’s just whatever’s being felt at the time in the studio. We were having a party, just us two, having fun.’

One thing is for certain; the record won’t merely be good. Simz doesn’t do average. There’s a distinct spirit of excellence that cuts across her creative oeuvre. It’s in her artfully articulate rhymes, the cut of her cargo pants, the trumpets that flare fantastically on the capricious ‘Gorilla’, it’s in the beautiful lighting for videos such as ‘Point and Kill’, shot in Lagos, and her captivating, commanding stage presence. You see it in whatever Simz turns her attention to, whether acting (she returned to the screen in 2019 to play Shelley in the hit Netflix drama Top Boy), modelling (for Miu Miu AW24) or photography (she released the beautiful coffee-table tome The *Book last year). ‘It’s all storytelling,’ she says of her ability to creatively shapeshift. ‘I love the idea of telling stories in whatever capacity it might be.’

Simz has been compelled to create since the age of eight or nine, when her older sister played 'The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill'. ‘As much as I loved music when I was young, I wasn’t emotionally intelligent enough to understand how it can physically impact you; give you goosebumps, make you cry, make you laugh. I didn’t get that until Lauryn, and then I started searching for it. How do I invoke that feeling in someone?’ she asks.

little simz cover star for elle june issue

She set about summoning those emotions, initially via St Mary’s Youth Club, a few minutes from her home on Essex Road, and at the Anna Scher Theatre school. She also took herself to radio, going up against the boys. At just 11 years old, she was on 1Xtra, rapping about the power of the pen. Where on earth did that conviction come from? ‘My sisters. The energy that surrounds me to allow me to have confidence was my family, because of the way they used to gas me up and make me feel like I am Jay-Z. I am Missy Elliott. That went a long way,’ she says. In 2010, she made her official debut with 'Stratosphere', the first of many releases.

Despite her compulsive productivity, Simz is acutely cognisant of the importance of work-life balance. She recently changed her routine in order to create more quiet. She now gets up at 6.30am and meditates, reads, looks out the window at the still-sleeping streets of her home in north-west London. ‘I find I’m not bombarded with the world yet – social media, messages, all that. When I first started doing it, I was mad bored. Like, where is everyone,’ she admits with a laugh. ‘Then I realised that was the point: it’s all me. I want to use that time, I really enjoy it.’ As the world wakes up, she eases herself into it, journaling, playing chess with a good friend, recording music and coming here, to this office that she’s had for nearly two years.

little simz on the cover of elle june issue

Downstairs there’s a gym, where her trainer, Keith, schools Simz in the full-contact combat sport Muay Thai. ‘It’s a fun way for me to keep fit and train for what I do. It’s very physical being on stage, touring, so this builds up stamina, endurance, all-round strength. I’m trying to get my physical form as top-tier as it can be.’

She’ll need it – next month Simz will perform at Glastonbury , her fourth time on the Farm but her first time playing the Pyramid: the penultimate act before Coldplay. When her manager told her the news, she was immediately ‘buzzing’ with excitement and ideas. She got her laptop out to watch sets by her peers in similar slots: Lizzo, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z and Stormzy, and began ‘planning my set list, what I’m gonna wear, what I want the show to feel like’.

It’s not only the Pyramid calling her name, but Miuccia Prada, too. In March, Simz found herself at Paris Fashion Week facing her first ever catwalk as a Miu Miu model. ‘Hands down the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done,’ she says, remembering her heart pounding as she stood backstage beside Kristin Scott Thomas and Gigi Hadid, trying to take in the instructions, trying to breathe. ‘They’re saying, “Go down here, take a right there, come back up, find the camera,” and I know I’m a performer – I was so happy they

didn’t put me in no crazy wedges – but the minute you have to concentrate on your walk, it’s so techie,’ she says, putting her head in her hands. ‘It goes so quick, you come off buzzing. Credit to the models, too. It gave me perspective and made me really respect the art of it. It’s not easy.’

From Worthy Farm to walking for Miu Miu, it’s important to underscore that Simz has done this as an indie artist on her own label, first Age 101 and now Forever Living Originals, via a distri- bution deal with AWAL. She doesn’t have the weight of a major label or publisher to secure streaming playlists, Radio 1 airtime, Brit Award performances, ELLE covers, brand campaigns or festival stages. Simz has done this alone. She’s had to believe in herself, so others could too.

Initially, she didn’t have much of a choice. Labels liked her, but she didn’t quite look right. ‘It was always the same situation,’ she remembers, miming someone looking her up and down. ‘“Yeah, this is cool, but this is what’s selling” – which was less clothing. And that’s just never been my vibe. I’ve always made a point to not conform to the industry status quo of how women – especially in hip-hop – should dress to appeal to the male gaze. I want to ensure that young girls who are like me – a bit quirky, a bit tomboyish – can see me. But also, I can fling on a dress,’ – or a skirt like she has for today’s shoot – ‘and make it look sick. I want them to know that there’s options.’

The labels eventually came calling, especially after the success of the Mercury Prize-nominated 2019 album Grey Area – but she was determined in her decision not to sign, no matter how long it took. Success for Simz hasn’t exactly happened overnight: that Brit arrived 12 years after she dropped her first mixtape.

‘I have had those moments of “I’m out, I’m actually done”,’ she admits, contemplating her career. ‘So many people have let me down. But so many people have showed up, so equally, I’m blessed. I’ve had a strong [support] system, but there’s been times when it’s just been me, roughing it, doing whatever I need to do to try to make something pop, and it’s been hard, man. Really hard.’ When acclaim came, it wasn’t without struggle. ‘I made an album basically saying I’m an introvert, and then I got mad attention.

So that was a weird time. An interesting, strange, bit of a challenging time to break through.’

And now, more success; here she is on the cover of ELLE . For years it wasn’t just difficult, but virtually impossible for a Black woman – particularly a Black British female musician – to regularly secure the cover of any magazine, let alone a fashion title. ‘I’m just so grateful to be living in a time when things like this can happen,’ Simz says. ‘There are so many women that have done the groundwork to allow me to be on the cover of ELLE . It’s not a me thing, it’s beyond that. People have been doing the graveyard shift so I could have this opportunity. Now, I wonder how I can make it easier for the next ones. There’s still a way to go, but I’m happy and grateful for how far we’ve come.’ Among her change-making predecessors, Simz names Viola Davis, Oprah Winfrey, Ms Dynamite, Missy Elliott, Lauryn and, of course, Joan Armatrading, the vastly underrated singer and guitarist who appeared with Simz at the 2023 Baftas to perform the redemptive ‘Heart On Fire’.

I made an album basically saying I’m an introvert, and then I got mad attention

‘I heard Little Simz’s music on the radio and thought right away that she was a big talent,’ Armatrading told ELLE . ‘When she asked me to play guitar at the Baftas last year, it didn’t take me long to decide that I would say yes. The show was great, I loved it. She did a fantastic job and I had a fantastic time playing the guitar. What’s not to like?’

Simz recognises her own role in the lineage. She mentioned wanting to make it easier for the next generation; how does she hope to do that? ‘Allowing people to see me on the ground is super important, because I want people to feel like it’s in reach; I’m in reach; your dreams are in reach,’ she says. ‘I’m working out how I can be more present – going into schools and youth centres. I hope an experience like that might stay with a young person: I’m there, with them in this youth club, and tomorrow I might be walking the catwalk. I want people to see me and say, “Yeah, I could be doing that.”’

As a kid, Simz would race home from school, dump her bag and dash straight back out to St Mary’s, where she made music with other future Brit winners such as Inflo. How does she feel about the huge cuts across youth clubs and the arts in general? ‘It’s frustrating. I can’t imagine what my life might have been if I didn’t have that. It’s not like there’s that much to do in the environments we grow up in, so you end up on the road. Kids are creative by nature and trying to axe their creativity at such an early age is super-detrimental.’ It’s more than art for art’s sake, too. ‘Creativity is a way of life. When it’s tended to and nourished, you learn how to figure things out, how to make and create things, and that really helps you in your future. It’s not just about doing a painting.’

little simz cover star for elle june issue

There’s a line on the track ‘Introvert’: ‘I’m not into politics but I know it’s dark times’. Is this still the case? ‘Not really, to be honest.’ She shifts about a little. Will she vote? ‘I’ll do what’s nec- essary for there to be good change but, I don’t know, I still have this stance of being young and feeling like [politicians] aren’t doing anything for me. But, ultimately, it’s about the next generation, so I’ll do what I can to help.’

What would Simz consider meaningful change? ‘My money would go towards mindfulness and teaching kids how to understand their bodies, their feelings, understand emotional intelligence. I think kids are just mad anxious. And I think social media plays a part in that so I would start with the mental wellbeing of young people. I would love to see that taught in schools. Journaling. Meditation. Small practices like that can go a long way.’

Mindfulness and introspection are, Simz says, absolutely key to all that she does. She recently turned 30 (she celebrated with friends and family at Sparrow in Mayfair, the sort of upscale Italian restaurant that doesn’t have prices on the menu) and, when I ask about future life goals, in keeping with her character, she doesn’t mention the usual awards, marriage, kids. Her ambitions are more interior than that. ‘What does future me look like?’ She takes time to consider. ‘It’ll be nice to feel at peace, firstly. I don’t want to lose my nut, you know?’ Why is that a fear? ‘One thing I’ve always been scared of is not having my feet on the ground. I don’t want to embarrass myself; I want to stay grounded and be happy, healthy, consistent, in my relationships, in my work. And I want to help as much as I can, and hopefully it’ll make a small difference.’ How about the world, this planet, which many feel is tipping upside down? ‘I actually feel hopeful,’ she says. ‘That’s why I talk about kids learning mindfulness, because this lot are going to take over. If they have these things instilled in them, it’s only going to be peace and harmony. I believe in people,’ she gestures to the office, towards Camden, London, the world. ‘I believe in us.’

I already caught Little Simz live at a festival three months ago. Just like last time, she performed with lots of energy, a very solid set and a fantastic backing band. It is refreshing to hear hip-hop-beats delivered so organically and supporting Little Simz' very raw, in-the-moment performance. She manages to sell her music in a truly personal, genuine way, that works especially well in front of a smaller audience. Great artist, great show!

Little Simz live in London: UK rap’s greatest talent dazzles in homecoming

November 10, Alexandra Palace: The north Londoner completes her UK tour with a homecoming performance that toasts to another phenomenal year

“You need to know you’re witnessing greatness,” declares Little Simz, halfway through her sold-out show at London’s Alexandra Palace. “I don’t say that with arrogance, I say it with confidence.” It’s a reflection of the competitive streak that runs through all of the UK’s most talented rappers, and on the crowning night of her ‘NO THANK YOU’ tour, it’s a testament to the progress Simbi Ajikawo has made in recent years.

Following the release of promising yet unpolished early projects like ‘A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons’ and ‘Stillness in Wonderland’, Simz has embarked on a phenomenal three-album run that’s cemented her place as one of the world’s finest rappers. She followed breakthrough 2019 record ‘GREY Area’ (voted NME’s Best British Album in 2020 ) with 2021’s deeply personal, hugely ambitious feat of storytelling ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’. Then, she unleashed surprise fifth studio album ‘NO THANK YOU’ (a fierce outpouring of emotion inspired by a struggle with a manager who was curtailing her artistic freedom) last December — thereby avoiding media hype, eschewing end of the year lists and encapsulating her strongly independent outlook.

Throughout 2023, Simz has been killing shows all over the planet. Her schedule has included a headline spot at Love Supreme Festival, appearances at Parklife and NASS Festival, and the launching of the worldwide ‘NO THANK YOU’ tour this Autumn, supported on the UK leg by longtime collaborator OTG and Hak Baker , the ‘G-folk’ wordsmith whose debut album ‘World’s End FM’ received a four-star review from NME earlier this year. Tonight’s show is a more elaborate version of the set she’s been delivering to fans across the world throughout this period, with ramped up visuals and playful chat throughout.

She kicks off with ‘Silhouette’, the backstage visuals supporting the song’s theme by displaying the silhouetted figures of the gospel choir whose vocals help structure the track, swaying and dancing to the smooth hip-hop beat as it builds behind Simz’s clean, measured verses: “When the drums speak to me, I just breathe through it / Cool with a little flair, how does she do it?”

At the close of ‘Two Worlds Apart’, the crowd sings back the track’s extended hook ( “And I love you” ), sampled from Smokey Robinson’s ‘The Agony and The Ecstasy’ , to which Simz replies “I love you too, London!” After a fiery rendition of ‘Venom’, her slim black Prada shades are off, and with a serious tone, the north London rapper addresses the audience. “The world is a bleak place right now. I want to take a moment to pray for world peace.”  Her next track, ‘Introvert’, feels particularly apt in light of her subtle reference to the suffering of the Palestinian people. Lyrics like “There’s a war outside / I hear battle cries” are given further pertinence, and she changes the final word of the lyric: “I’m not into politics / But I know it’s dark times / Parts of the world still living in apartheid” to “genocide” , getting a huge roar of approval from the crowd.

Best known for her ability on the mic, Simbi Ajikawo also demonstrates her instrumental skills on multiple occasions. For the second half of the set she’s joined by regular bandmembers Nate (bass and keys) and Jordan (guitar and bass), and with their backing she pulls out a white Fender and plucks away a rhythmic lick throughout ‘Fear No Man’, before shuffling behind a Roland Gaia to play keys for ‘Protect My Energy’. The whole time, she’s dressed in the oversized shirt and tie combo she’s been donning all year (a number of fans turn up similarly dapper, which Simz notes: “I’m so grateful to everyone that put on a shirt and tie, and everyone that just made the effort to buy a ticket”).

“This week has been treacherous,” Simz admits toward the show’s climax, detailing her recent struggles with illness before insisting tonight’s gig has perked her up. The importance of mental health is also addressed, with the Tottenham rapper delivering a heartfelt message to anyone struggling in her introduction to ‘Broken’, a poignant documentation of individual hardship built on lyrics like “I’ve been hitting some lows and never telling a soul / You can have everything and nothing, still nobody knows .”

Recommended

There’s true appreciation for the London crowd throughout the evening. Almost the entire first verse of ‘NO THANK YOU’ hit ‘Gorilla’ is rapped back word for word, a capella. At one point, Simz hops offstage to take a series of Polaroids, before signing them and distributing them to fans. When Cleo Sol — a fellow Londoner and longtime collaborator who features heavily on both ‘NO THANK YOU’ and ‘S.I.M.B.I’ — comes onstage to sing her honeyed hook for ‘Woman’, the place erupts. “You lot are spoilt, you know,” says Simz, after Cleo heads backstage. “Nowhere else, just home.” Simz was always likely to save something special for her hometown crowd.

Little Simz played:

‘Silhouette’ ‘No Merci’ ‘Two Worlds Apart’ ‘I Love You, I Hate You’ ‘X’ ‘Heart On Fire’ ‘Might bang, might not’ ‘101 FM’ ‘Venom’ ‘Introvert’ ‘Point and Kill’ ‘Fear No Man’ ‘Protect My Energy’ ‘Selfish’ ‘Angel’ ‘Broken’ ‘Who Even Cares’ ‘Woman’ ‘Gorilla’

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

little simz tour manager

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

little simz tour manager

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

little simz tour manager

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

little simz tour manager

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

little simz tour manager

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

little simz tour manager

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
