Komodo Island Trip Review: Sailing from Lombok to Flores

komodo boat tour review

You know the saying, “third time’s the charm”…?  Well, that’s how many times it took me to come to Indonesia and finally hop on one of the Komodo Island tours.   I’m actually kinda mad at myself it took me this long, because the entire experience was absolutely incredible!  This Komodo Island Trip review will go over all your questions, the itinerary, and help you plan your trip to this amazing corner of the world.  After researching different Komodo tours, I decided to go with one of the higher recommended companies — Wanua Adventures .

DSC_0984

There are a few of other options, but the most important factor of these types of tours is the boat.  ALL of the companies have the exact same trip itinerary,  so you want to get on a tour with a decent boat — which is why I chose Wanua Adventures.  They have departures from the Gili Islands / Lombok every Wednesday & Friday.  They also do the same trip in reverse from Flores – Lombok.

Compared to the other companies boats I saw, the Wanua Adventures boat was much larger, and seemed much more comfortable.  There was plenty of room in the main deck / eating area, and a nice spot at the front of the boat to enjoy some sun while sailing.  I’d say one of the biggest differences I noticed was that our boat had a great balcony at the back of the boat that was prime for sunset watching.  It also allowed for people to get into the deck (sleeping area) at two different spots.  Which really comes in handy if there’s a full boat.  It was also a great area to hang up your wet clothes and towels after swimming.

DAY 1 – TRIP DEPARTURE AND SAIL TO SUGIAN ISLAND

I’ll be honest when I say that this trip got off to a very ROUGH START.  The weather conditions were poor for sailing, and for hours the boat was making everyone a little queasy.  I do not get sea sickness, but even my stomach was a little upset.  After a few hours, the water smoothed out, and we made it to our location.  Even though the waters were a little choppy, the views of cruising alongside the coast of Lombok were stunning!   We ate dinner, enjoyed the sunset, drank a few beers, went for a swim, and had a little group bonding with our fellow travelers.

DAY 2 — MOYO ISLAND WATERFALL TREK & STUNNING SATONDIA ISLAND SNORKELING

We woke up bright and early around 7 A.M, enjoyed some breakfast and coffee, and prepared for the day’s activities.  The first was a mini-trek through Moyo Island to a nice waterfall.  Now, I’m not a morning person, and the idea of trekking that early was not my ideal way to wake-up, but it actually wasn’t bad at all.  It was a short 20 minute walk through the jungle to a tucked away waterfall.  Compared to other waterfalls in South-East Asia, it was nothing special, but still great to look at and take a quick swim in.  We then hopped back on the on the boat and made our way to Satonda island, which had some of the most amazing snorkeling of my entire life!

DAY 3 — GILI LABA VIEWS — MANTA POINT  — RED BEACH

This was by far my favorite day of the trip.  It was another early start of the day for a quick 20-30 minute hike to the top of the Laba Island View Point.  It was not until this moment that I realized how incredible Komodo and the surrounding islands are.  The landscape of the islands rising out the sea was incredible.  The hike was not bad at all, and was worth every drop of sweat for the pictures.

DSC_1038

After the spectacular Laba View Point, we head back down to our boat, and set sail for what I was hoping to be one of the highlights of the trip — MANTA POINT .  Unfortunately, the water conditions were so rough that we barely got out to swim for a brief 15 minutes.  There was no chance of us seeing a Manta.  I had heard that on this trip they market that it is a possibility, but it is not guaranteed.   We then decided to swim to an amazing beach located near Manta point.  It is honestly postcard perfect.  The swim was actually pretty difficult because of the strong currents, but it made for some good exercise and even better pictures.  We got to do a bit of decent snorkeling, and then made our way to the famous Red Beach.  (Which too be honest, was a beautiful beach, but typical pictures make it look ALOT more red).

DSC_1077

DAY 4– KOMODO NATIONAL PARK & RINCA ISLAND

The fourth and final day of the trip.  The day the trip is named after.  It’s time to visit Komodo National park and see these beasts in person.  We got off the boat and made the short walk to the entrance of the national park.  We were told that since it was mating seasons for the komodo dragons, it was actually pretty rare to see them on the island.  I could tell everyone in the group was saddened to hear that, especially after we hadn’t seen the manta the previous.  We began our tour through the jungle, in hopes to see what the famous Komodo Dragon.

DSC_1103

Then we soon found out, that lady luck was on our side.  I turned a corner and saw our group taking pictures at a smaller Komodo dragon.  Our guide told us it about 3 years old or so.  It was awesome!  We continued taking our pictures until everyone was satisfied, and continued down the trail.  We thought our tour was over, and at least we saw a young Komodo dragon.  Then out of nowhere some yells “DRAGON, DRAGON”, as if it were a scene of Game of Thrones .  We rushed out, and saw this big beast just strolling along the beach.  We followed it for 10-15 minutes, all trying to get the perfect picture, and I’m happy with mine.

DSC_1132

After the excitement of seeing two different Komodo dragons when the expectation was rather low, we got back on our boat and made our way to the last stop; Rinca island.  I wasn’t feeling very well, and wasn’t up for an hour & a half trek, so I just journeyed into the main area.  But still enjoyed checking out the visitor area.

DSC_1161

After the group returning from the trek through Rinca Island, we set sail for our final destination — Labuan Bajo.  We did however make a pitstop for a quick swim and snorkel session at an island really close to LB.  The way back was full of beautiful views, and it was really hard to put the camera away.  It was a nice time to really think about the past few days, and how amazing this part of Indonesia is.

DSC_1172

FOOD & DRINK

I’m a big guy, and I eat pretty often — so I was actually pretty happy with the food served on board.  You get three meals each day, and there’s pretty much always enough for seconds.  Most of the meals are served with some soy based dish like Tofu or Tempe, a vegetable dish, plain rice (and noodles occasionally), and a fruit platter.  They have tons of cases of bottled drinking water.  You grab a bottle, and write your name on it so you don’t confuse them with others.  There’s also unlimited coffee and tea.  Also — before you get on board you have the option of buying beer and soda from a vendor who will run to the store and grab them for you.  I brought 12 large Bintangs on board, as well as a bottle of Vodka.  (What can I say?  I like to party).  There were actually a couple nights where we had a decent party going on.  Music playing, drinks flowing, and good vibes.

USEFUL TIPS & INFORMATION

  • Bring Snacks —  They do serve food often, but it definitely will come in handy after snorkeling or swimming to have something small to snack on.  Pringles, oreos, peanuts, and the ever so popular kit-kat.
  • Bring a Book —  There were a couple times I found myself thinking I should have brought a book.  There are long days where you sail for hours, and it’s nice to have something to read.
  • Sunscreen is your friend —  A lot of this trip is spent in the sun, and if you don’t want to look like a burnt lobster, then definitely plan on bringing plenty of sunscreen.
  • Underwater Camera —  Whether it’s a GoPro or just a waterproof camera, you’re going to want to take some photos while snorkeling.  There is some amazing snorkeling, especially at Satonda Island!
  • Plan Ahead —  I’m talking about your plans after getting to Labuan Bajo.  If you plan on exploring Flores, that’s great!  But if you have a plan on getting a flight back to Bali or Jakarta, book in advance, because flight prices can be ridiculous.  And I can almost guarantee you won’t want to spend another 3 days on a boat journeying back to Lombok.

If you have the time, than I couldn’t recommend this trip enough to anyone traveling Indonesia!  You’re comfort levels are tested at times, but it is absolutely worth it.  You’re guaranteed to see some incredible sights, meet awesome people, and have the trip of a lifetime.  Check out the Wanua Adventures website for more information.  I would definitely recommend traveling with them.  The staff were all really friendly, the boat was decent, and they showed us an amazing time.  I also have to give a shoutout to everyone on board our trip.  It was a pleasure meeting all of you, and I hope to see you around the world  again soon!

Hey Wilfred! Thanks for the comment. Glad you found it useful! Definitely get out to Komodo someday, it was such an incredible experience !

Thank you for this review! I will leave in ten days for Indonesia and I’m planning the same trip, but the way back, from Lauan Bajo to Lombok. I’m really getting mad trying to decide among Perama, Kencana Aventure and just yesterday I discovered Wanua Adventures. So do you think the last one is the best one? And can you tell me please the price?? I’ve heard that if you book directly there you can maybe get a discount, anyway I prefere to plan my trip to book other things, so I need to book it now.

Last question: on the boat can I charge the battery of my photocamera?

Thank you very much for the help and have good travel around the wordl!!

On the Wanua Adventures boat, there was a charging area behind the captains area that I used often to charge my camera, GoPro, and phone! There were a couple other ones, but I heard they didn’t work most of the time, but I never had a problem charging my stuff.

As far as the competition, they really are quite similar. I’ve heard great things about Kencanca, and Perama is definitely one of the more expensive companies. From my experience in South-East Asia, you get what you pay for.

I was on a tighter budget, so I chose Wanua — and loved my time. I thought the staff were great, the food was decent, and we got lucky with a great group of people.

For price, most people on the boat paid around 1.3 -1.4 Million. You can definitely bargain them down! It really just depends on what fits your itinerary best, and which companies depart on certain days.

Hope all is well man! Enjoy the trip! It really is awesome!

Dear Jonas,

thank you very much, you’ve been very kind and helpful to me!

Now the problem is I can’t get in touch with them! :-( I completed the form on their website 3 days ago (before sending you the email) but I didn’t receive any reply, then I wrote a private massage at the Facebook Page Wanua Adventure, they saw the message but didn’t reply and in the end I wrote an email to [email protected] … but no reply.

About the price, it could be defenetly the one that fits for us, anyway I was wondering if it is recent, because I was searching for a date, maybe you wrote it but I coulnd’t find it. Reading the first comment by Wilfred on 5th July 2015, I supposed you did this trip just the past month.

Thanks again very much, also for the quick reply, and I wanted to say that the review about Gili TRawangan was great and also the pictures!!

Hi Jones, Thanks a lot for the post. This was exactly the info that i was searching for. I am planning a trip end of Aug to see the dragons but starting from Labuan bajo to Lombok. Would you by chance know what days they start the trip from labuan Bajo? we are planing to buy the tickets once we get there , would you know where to get the tickets from? and how can i contact them?

Hey Ann! So glad you found my post useful! :-) I’m not entirely sure if they offer the trip in reverse, but you can check their website for contact and info: You can negotiate prices with them, talk dates, and figure out the ebst deals. If this company doesn’t offer the tour, I’ve heard Kencana tours are okay as well, but I wouldn’t know firsthand!

This was a very insightful post. I have two questions: 1. Which travel company did you use to book your trip with Wanua adventures? I have been writing to Wanua directly but they don’t respond. 2. Which camera did you use for the pictures you have posted above? Did you use the same camera for under water pictures as well?

I booked with them directly, but you can book this trip through them with any of the travel agents on the Gili Islands. Just shop around and try to bargain them down. I think the standard price was around 1.4 mill? But I can’t qutie remember exactly.

For these pictures, I was using my Nikon D3300, and I also used a GoPro Hero 3+ black. So different camera for the underwater shots.

Thanks for the reply Dave.

Hi Dave We are a family of 5 there are planing that trip. Were there families on the boat or was it only young people on your tour and what about your cabin. How was the quality and how big are the cabins

3 Day Komodo Boat Trip Guide to see Komodo Dragons & Padar Island

3 Day Komodo Boat Trip Guide to see Komodo Dragons & Padar Island

Boating through the Indonesian islands to see Komodo Dragons was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Not only did we see these ancient beasts, we saw spectacular sunsets, pink beaches, manta rays and islands that are so beautiful they don't even look real!

Our comprehensive guide will explain how to book your Komodo boat trip, the best places to see and what you can expect on your trip.

3 Day Komodo Boat Trip Guide

Is this experience for you.

komodo boat tour review

We want to mention that this is not a luxury cruise by any means. You will be cruising the sea on a wooden boat with a basic toilet, washroom and bedroom. The weather is also sweltering at times. Although the kitchen is small, we couldn't believe the variety of food that the chef was able to make. It was delicious!

Having a private tour allowed us to have the top deck of the boat all to ourselves. We enjoyed lounging on the chaise lounges located in the shade and watching the scenery go by. With a group tour it may feel crowded on the boat.

We chose a boat without air conditioning to save on the price, but it was so hot in our sleeping cabin that we slept on our lounge chairs instead. We found it fun to sleep on the top deck, but it's definitely something for you to consider.

We went into the experience not having expectations of the amenities and we had a great time. If you're up for an adventure cruise, it will not disappoint!

How long should you go for?

komodo boat tour review

We recommend going for 2 nights/3 days to see the best of the area. We went for 3 nights/4 days and it was one day too much. Our days on our Komodo tour were so jam-packed, we were physically exhausted from the heat, snorkelling, hiking and our sleeping conditions. A 2 night/3 day Komodo tour would have been perfect.

10 Must-See Places in the Komodo area

komodo boat tour review

There are 10 spots in the area that were our favourites. They shouldn't be missed! We customized our Komodo tour to make sure we saw them all. In three days you should be able to see all 10 spots.

Padar Island

komodo boat tour review

Our favourite island for its beauty was Padar Island. The shape of the island is most unique we've ever seen . When you take the short hike up to the viewpoint you will see a birds-eye view of the green volcanic mountains, a black sand beach, a pink beach, and a white beach! Watching the sunset from here was a perfect moment.

Komodo Island

komodo boat tour review

Komodo Island is the first of two islands where you will be able to see Komodo dragons. When you arrive at the island you are assigned a local guide who takes you around the island. Right when we arrived we saw Komodo Dragons by the entrance. It seemed like they were sleeping or had eaten a lot and were too lazy to move. They can eat up to 80% of their body weight in ofne sitting! As we kept walking, we saw some dragons walking around slithering their cute, skinny long tongue.  It was a surreal experience seeing these giant venomous lizards that can grow up to 10 feet!

Top Tip: bring small cash with you so you can tip your local guides.

Rinca Island

komodo boat tour review

Rinca island is the lesser known island with Komodo Dragons and feels wilder than Komodo Island. When we arrived at the dock we could see Komodo dragons lounging on the beach. Once we got in the park, our local guide gave us optional hikes we could take to find Komodo Dragons in their natural surroundings. We chose a 45-minute hike that gave us a pretty viewpoint of the island.

When we arrived back at the entrance we were looking at some trinkets for sale when out of nowhere we heard someone yelling and a saw a Komodo Dragon running very fast down the path towards us! We jumped out of the way. We couldn't believe how fast the Komodo dragon could run! The giant lizard wasn't running to eat us, but to run away from the ranger who was shooing it out of the tourist only zone.

Out of Komodo Island and Rinca, we preferred Rinca, but it's worth it to go to both to increase your probability of seeing the dragons.

Manta Ray Point

Snorkelling with manta rays was one of our top experiences. They are huge and grow 3-7 meters wide! It was a magnificent moment swimming with these beautiful creatures. They are not dangerous or harmful to humans. Sometimes we saw them doing flips out of the water when boating around!

komodo boat tour review

Pink beach was one of our favourite beaches to relax and swim at. It was tranquil and so relaxing. Is the sand actually pink? Yes subtly, but not like some of the over-edited pictures show on Instagram! The sand might not be as bright pink as you expect from pictures, but the grains of sand really are pink and have a true natural beauty.

Taka Makassar

komodo boat tour review

We nicknamed this beach "snake island" because of its shape. The swimming here is fantastic. The white sand bar is like something you see in a movie where a person on a dinghy washes up on shore. Paradise would not be found for that person though, since there is no shade!

Kelor Island

komodo boat tour review

Kelor Island will likely be the first stop on your trip as it's the closest to the port town Labuan Bajo. The tiny island has a steep little hill you can walk up to see a view of the sandbar and the crystal clear sea below. Once you're done your mini hike you can reward yourself by going for a dip in the water.

Kalong Island

komodo boat tour review

When you visit Kalong Island, you won't actually step foot on the island but anchor your boat to wait for sunset. Once the sun sets, thousands of bats fly out of the forest to find their prey. It's like a scene out of a scary movie. It's the real life version of Night on Bald Mountain from Fantasia. The flying foxes (fruit bats) are large with scalloped wings and have a wingspan of up to 1.5 meters long! It was a very cool experience.

Rinca Fishing Village

komodo boat tour review

We didn't expect to be moved by a little fishing village. This is the place where you can really see the local islander way of life. Our guide recommended visiting here and we are so happy we did. When we stepped foot in the tiny village, we saw many kids splashing around in the water having fun. Lots of them excitedly ran up to us smiling and waving saying "HELLO MISS"!

It was a culture shock to see how little the people had material-wise compared to back home. No internet, no air conditioning. The traditional wooden houses were built on stilts and didn't provide much privacy. We felt silly that we were starting to break after a few days from the heat and no air conditioning. We were inspired by how happy and content the people appeared. We didn't see one face without a smile and they were all so friendly. They never once asked us for money. In fact, when we bought some candies and Coca-Cola from a little store and said they could keep the change, the lady instead gave us tons more candy!

We wished we would have known beforehand about the village, because we would have brought soccer balls and school supplies for the kids! They are so cute.

Places that were underwhelming

komodo boat tour review

Everywhere on the island is beautiful, but there were a couple places that weren't as spectacular as our top spots mentioned above. We visited Gili Lawa, but were underwhelmed with the snorkelling compared to other spots. The island is beautiful for sunset, but we preferred Padar Island.

Kanawa Island was underwhelming since there is a small resort there. It didn't feel as wild and authentic as the other spots.

How to Book Your Komodo Boat Tour Guide

komodo boat tour review

There are many companies that offer boat excursions through the Komodo islands. The things you should look for in a tour company are:

  • 4.5-5 star rating on Tripadvisor (read the reviews!)
  • If they offer private or group tours. We were looking for a private tour.
  • A guide that speaks good English (or whichever language you prefer)
  • Good value in price compared to others. Ensure all meals, park fees, snorkelling, and tracking fees are included in the tour price.
  • If the boat has air conditioning

Checking the reviews on Tripadvisor is the most important thing to make sure they are an established and trustworthy company. My sister and I travelled together alone and we would have been anxious on our private tour with a crew of four men if we didn't have the reassurance from positive traveller reviews.

The company we chose was Indonesian Boat Trip . The price was right for us and we were able to customize our trip to see the places we wanted. We felt safe with our friendly crew and the boat. The food that came out of the kitchen was awesome!

Most of the companies do not list their prices online. Reach out to your favourites and ask for a quote.

Best time to visit Komodo Island

komodo boat tour review

The best time to visit the Komodo area is during dry season from April to mid-October. Mid-October to December is also a decent time with plenty of sunshine, but some rain. We visited the Komodo islands during the end of December. We saw some rain storms in the distance, but it never rained on us once. Each day we had tons of sun and it was very hot.

You can see manta rays all year long, but you will see the most of them between December-February. However, January-February is very rainy, so we wouldn't recommend visiting during this time.

How to get to Komodo Island

komodo boat tour review

The starting point of your tour is from the port town of Labuan Bajo. It is a quick one-hour flight from Denpasar, Bali. Be careful when choosing the airline for your flight, because some Indonesian airlines have low safety ratings. We chose Garuda Indonesia since it has a high safety rating .

Our Komodo tour company picked us up at the airport and we began our tour from there!

How much will your Komodo Boat tour cost?

komodo boat tour review

Your Komodo tour will vary in price depending on the number of days you go, if you get a private tour and if you have air conditioning. Make sure you contact multiple companies for quotes!

In 2018 our private 4 day tour with no air conditioning cost us 7,400,000 IDR (~$500 USD) each. This was including all of our meals, drinks, park fees and snorkelling gear. We had four crew members on board with us and made sure we brought enough cash to tip them at the end.

What to bring on your boat trip to Komodo Island

komodo boat tour review

Don't forget to bring these essentials:

  • Sunscreen (high SPF!)
  • Rash guard for snorkelling. Trust us, a bikini won't cut it on your third day of snorkelling. That sun is hot!
  • Breathable pants and shirts (you can buy these in Bali beforehand for cheap)
  • Hiking shoes
  • Shorts and tank top for hiking
  • Beach coverup
  • Playing cards
  • Headphones to listen to music
  • Soft drinks and candies. Our tour came with coffee, tea and water, but it was nice having a sugary snack.
  • Power bank. The outlets only work when the engines are on.
  • Hair elastics
  • Toilet paper
  • Toiletries (natural shampoo, conditioner, body wash)
  • Notepad and pen
  • Kindle or books

Enjoy the adventure!

Most tours go to Padar first and then Komodo, but we were able to go to Komodo first, while it was still quiet and the dragons were active. I encountered no other tourists there for the first 90 minutes, which was great. I saw three big dragons, so I was very pleased!” Graham H – (see more reviews)

Komodo National Park Fees 2024

There have been a lot of discrepancies when it comes to the additional fees needed to visit Komodo National Park on Komodo Island tours. Even when doing my own research, I’ve come across various figures and I am honestly not 100% sure whether all are necessary, but regardless I’ll list them below:

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTE: ALL KOMODO NATIONAL PARK FEES MUST BE PAID IN CASH TO THE KOMODO NATIONAL PARK TICKET OFFICE

What I can say from all my research and discussion with tour providers is that the fees will be between IDR 450 000 IDR to 600 000 IDR per person per day (depending on the number of people on the boat) , This is in addition to your Komodo Tour package. There still is currently no fixed information on the Komodo National Park Website, but you can refer to https://www.floreskomodoexpedition.com/ for more information on the transparency of the fees

Drone Usage at Komodo National Park

Aerial view of Padar Island in Komodo National park taken with drone photography

I recently found information from a tour agent that there is a drone use fee for Komodo National Park :

“Drone usage in KNP is Required to purchase a ticket at the National Park Office in Labuan Bajo. You have to buy a drone ticket 3 days before the trip. The cost of the ticket is IDR 1 000 000″

So this amount will be in addition to your Komodo island Tours package. I highly recommend mentioning when booking your tour if you are bringing a tour and checking the fees and payment situation with your tour company.

Best Time to do Komodo Island Tours

sunrise and ocean views at Padar Island Flores Komodo National Park

The best time to visit Komodo National Park in Indonesia depends on your preferences. If you’re looking for warm temperatures, sunny skies, and less rain then the dry season (May-October) is ideal.

However, if you prefer cooler temperatures and are willing to brave some showers then the wet season/rainy season (November-April) may be more suitable.

The water is usually calmer and clearer during the dry season, making it ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

But if you’re more interested in wildlife spotting then the wet season may be better as many species are more active during this time.

TRAVELIST TIP: We visited in October which was the best of both worlds for snorkelling and wildlife spotting. I would likely suggest visiting Komodo Island before October though for the most ideal experience.

Travel Tips for Visiting the Komodo Islands & Komodo Island Tours

Close up of Komodo Dragon on Komodo Islands trip

1. When booking a tour, be extremely thorough in knowing what your itinerary is and what is included/ excluded. Whether you are on an open or private trip it’s essential to ensure you bring along the relevant cash, and items needed for your trip and aren’t surprised by any hidden costs or lack of equipment

2. Insect Repellent is a must! In Labuan Bajo I was extremely surprised at the number of mosquitos, this isn’t so much on the open waters, but if you head on land, be sure to coat yourself to prevent mosquito bites etc.

3. If you’re pressed for time Komodo Island day tours are a great way to see the popular spots of the Komodo Islands, however, it can feel incredibly rushed and super tiring . I highly recommend the multiday liveaboard Komodo islands tour to really see the unique destination at an easy pace and the experience of cruising and island hopping on a boat is pretty epic too.

4. If you’re on a day trip, bring along a towel and change of clothes, it gets hot and you’ll defs be up to jump into the waters to cool down and see some amazing creatures in the ocean

5. Bring along Cash (in local currency Indonesian Rupiah) – for your Komodo National Park entrance fees and if you’re looking to buy additional snacks/drinks on some of the beaches/ snorkelling islands you’ll need to pay in cash as there aren’t any ATMs in Komodo National Park

6. Dietary requirements: in a number of tours I’ve seen they don’t cater for vegetarian or vegan options. In this regard, you may want to stock up on your own food/snacks to ensure you don’t go hungry. On our tour, however, there were a number of vegetable dishes, so even if you just ate rice and a vegetable dish you wouldn’t go hungry.

passengers on Komodo Islands Boat tour eating food for lunch on Boat deck

7. Sailing and Boat trips require good weather . You’ll see on a number of tour provider websites that tours can be amended or cancelled due to poor weather conditions. Please check with your tour provider what their refund/rescheduling policies are to avoid any nasty surprises.

8. Day trips to Komodo Island also usually involve getting a packed lunch – I’ve seen on a number of reviews that many people have not been impressed with their packed lunch. On the liveaboard trips – all food was actually made fresh on the boat or caught (seafood) whilst we were on our excursion). Again I strongly suggest when in Labuan Bajo make sure to visit the mini marts/ supermarket to bring along your own food/snacks if you are a picky eater or want your own bits to snack on – we did

9. Certain tours may involve a one-night stay at a hotel either during or prior or after your trip. Check with your tour provider whether this is included.

TRAVELIST TIP: Our trip began at 8 am on a Friday – unfortunately there were no flights early enough to reach Labuan Bajo before the tour so we had to fly in on Thursday and stay one night before the multiday liveaboard tour. There are plenty of hotels in Labuan Bajo and they also have incredibly gorgeous sea views. >> Check out my post on the Best Seview Hotels in Labuan Bajo if you need a hotel stay during your trip

Komodo Trip Phinisi Boat used for Liveaboard Komodo islands tours

10. Please be aware that wooden boats offer a traditional sea-faring experience , prioritizing authenticity over modern amenities (all boats have a toilet, shower and rooms with aircon/fans). While comfort levels may vary, passengers can expect a rustic ambience as they explore Komodo National Park. This is obviously not the case for luxury yachts. None of the tours listed above are luxury yachts.

What to Pack for a Komodo Islands Tour

man sitting on rock a top Padar Island viewpoint

Swimwear for swimming, beach lounging and snorkelling. This is definitely to be packed whether you’re on a Komodo day trip or a multi-day liveaboard trip

Snorkelling Gear Depending on whether your tour provides this or not, you might want to bring along your own if you have a preference or check that your tour provider has the relevant life jackets, snorkel, mask and fins if you need them. I also tend to use aqua boots when snorkelling in coral areas where I don’t need fins, so bring those along if you’re the same 🙂

Closed shoes for the Padar Island hike. If you’re someone who feels they can manage the trek up the Padar Island rocky terrain in sandals – then good on you. Although all the trails in Komodo National Park aren’t technical I definitely had a preference for closed shoes on the Padar island trek as well as up the short steep trek on the Kelor Island summit.

Sunscreen and Mosquito repellent – for pretty obvious reasons. For the mosquito repellent, I just bought the Soffell (Indonesian brand) one I found in a mini-mart in Labuan Bajo but I strongly suggest bringing your own (sunscreen and mosquito repellent if you have a preference and what works for you.

Light quick dry clothing . Indonesia is a hot place. I found that light airy clothing worked best for me and I did not ever really get cold whilst on the boat (for the liveaboard trip) in the evenings I felt a shawl, swimsuit cover-up, and pashmina were sufficient. If you get very cold easily maybe bring a jersey.

Bring a waterproof bag for any electronic devices and camera equipment you might have with you or for your trips off the boat to hold your towel, change of clothes etc.

Komodo Islands Tour FAQ

Yes, there are Komodo Island tours from Bali. Check out this Bali Komodo tour: 3-Day Komodo island Tour with or without Roundtrip Flight From Bali . Should you plan Komodo tours from Bali? Yes, sometimes there might not be a direct flight from your destination to Labuan Bajo. So you’re likely to fly from Bali to Labuan Bajo and begin your tour from LB.

The Komodo island tour price in Indonesia will depend on the length and type of trip you book. Generally, Komodo island tour packages for day tours cost around $50 to 150 USD per person, while multi-day expeditions can range from $200 to $1000 USD per person. Prices may also vary depending on the season, the number of activities included, and other additional amenities or how luxurious the experience or boat is. For more detailed pricing information, it’s best to contact the tour operator directly. It is also important to note that Komodo Island tours may require special permissions and fees for certain activities, so be sure to inquire about them beforehand.

I’ve compiled an entire post about How to Choose the best Komodo Island boat trip including, what facilities the boat should have, pricing etc. It can feel pretty overwhelming at first glance to visit Komodo island National Park so Check out the post here

The closest airport to the Komodo Islands is Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, Flores Island . The most common way to get there is to take a flight from Bali directly to this destination. There are also ferries available from Bali and other nearby islands, however, they tend to be more time-consuming and unreliable. If you’re coming from another part of Indonesia, then you may need to take a connecting flight or ferry to reach Labuan Bajo. Once you arrive in Labuan Bajo, you can arrange a boat tour to the Komodo Islands.

Although visiting the Komodo islands from Labuan Bajo is the main attraction, there are a number of things to do in Labuan Bajo. I’ve written a full detailed post on the 20 Best Things to do in Labuan Bajo which includes: – Cunca Wulang Waterfall and Cunca Rami Waterfall –  Ranco Cave – Snorkelling and Diving in Labuan Bajo –  Traditional Indonesian Village Culture: Wae Rebo , Kampung Melo and Todo village – City and Seaviews at Bukit Cinta Viewpoint – Sunset Cocktails in the city – Labuan Bajo Fishmarket – Mesa Fishing Village – Batu Cermin Cave – Sembilan Island

Boat we stayed on for our 2-day/1-night liveaboard boat tour in Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Liveaboard Boat Tour in Komodo National Park: 2D/1N Itinerary

What’s the best way to see Komodo National Park? By boat , of course! Komodo National Park is a series of islands off the coast of Flores, one of Indonesia’s biggest islands. The main harbor for Komodo National Park boat tours is in Labuan Bajo. [If you aren’t interested in planning your own trip and just want to read about our experience, feel free to skip to “What happens on the tour?” Also, we are not a tour operator and we were not compensated by any tour agency to write this post. We just wanted to share our experience and answer any questions you might have!]

Getting to Komodo National Park When and Where to Book Your Tour What to Know Before Booking Komodo National Park Packing List Tour Itinerary: Day 1 Tour Itinerary: Day 2

What’s the best way to get to Komodo National Park?

You can fly from Denpasar (Bali) to Labuan Bajo (Flores) on multiple airlines; prices generally range from $60 to $75 USD for a one-way ticket. You can also take a boat tour from Lombok (the island between Bali and Flores) to Labuan Bajo, which generally takes four days and three nights. (If you choose this option, you might not also want to do a liveaboard boat in Komodo NP as described in this post, depending on where your 4D/3N boat stops. But you might still find this post useful for general information and our experiences at certain places along the way.)

Adult male Komodo dragon on Rinca Island, Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Note: We visited Komodo National Park in January 2020. Currently, there are plans to increase the fee to visit Komodo Island to around ~$250 USD in 2023. Please be sure to research the current tourism situation at Komodo Island before booking any tours. Even if Komodo Island costs an exorbitant amount of money, see if other islands in the national park are charging lower fees. We didn’t even visit Komodo Island on our tour, and we still saw the Komodo dragons [pictured above] and had a great time.

How far ahead should you book your tour?

Although you can find many Komodo National Park boat tours online , we recommend waiting until you arrive in Labuan Bajo to book your trip, mostly for the price. Whereas day trips online cost upwards of $120 USD per person, we were able to book a 2D/1N boat tour in person for only $65 USD per person, so the in-person savings are pretty huge.

The caveat to this would be if you want an air-conditioned cabin. If you don’t want to sleep on the deck, you might need to book before your arrival, or there may only be deck space left. If budget is not a huge issue for you, you can opt for a private boat tour, which will cost you upwards of $400 USD pp, and you can usually book those a day or two before in person.

What questions should I ask before I choose a tour?

When booking a boat tour for Komodo National Park, be sure to get the following information:

• What meals are included? How about snacks or drinks? Is filtered water unlimited? (On our tour, all meals were included, plus an afternoon snack and unlimited coffee, tea and water. We still recommend bringing some snacks as you don’t control meal times, and there were times we got hungry.) • Are tickets to Komodo National Park included? (Most boat tours don’t include the ticket prices, and they cost almost as much as the tour itself! In addition to the entry fees, there are individual fees for rangers, hiking, snorkeling, etc., on the different islands, so the fees can add up. When we visited, it was about $45 USD per person for two days’ admission and activities, and we needed enough cash on hand to pay for the tickets from the boat.) • Is snorkeling gear included? (It should be!) • What is the maximum capacity of the boat and how many passengers are already booked? (And of course–where will you be sleeping?)

What should I pack?

We recommend leaving your bags at your accommodations in Labuan Bajo and only taking what you need on the boat. This includes:

• Basic toiletries (pretty much just toothpaste and deodorant, as there was no shower on our boat) • Something to sleep in (modest, as we were sleeping on a deck with others) • Swimsuit • Towel • Sunglasses & hat • Sunscreen (reef-friendly if possible!) & bug spray • Book/cards/games for offline entertainment • Portable battery pack • Sarong or another easy swimsuit cover-up • Comfortable shoes and clothes for a few gentle hikes (our Teva sandals were sufficient) • Snacks and soft drinks/beer if you want more than what is available on the boat

We were limited to what we already had in our backpacks for the entire year ( see Megan’s packing list here , see Jonathan’s here ) , but if we were on a shorter trip, the following items would have also been useful:

• Rash guard • Water shoes • Dry bag

What happens on the tour?

Of course, this will vary slightly depending on which tour you pick, but most liveaboard trips visit the same popular places. Below is a detailed itinerary of where we went and what we did during our 2D/1N tour. If you are interested in booking a longer and/or private option, check out Organized Adventurer for a review of a 3D/2N private liveaboard boat tour in Komodo National Park .

8:30 a.m. | We met at our tour operator’s office ( Alexandra Komodo Tour ) to get our snorkeling gear and be led to the boat, which was docked at Labuan Bajo Harbor.

9:30 a.m. | After a short delay (one group thought they had booked a private boat, so be sure to double-check with your tour operator if you want a private tour!), we departed from the dock to start our tour.

10:45 a.m. | The ride to our first stop was a little bouncy over the open water, but nothing unbearable. We spent about an hour at our first stop, Kelor Island . There was a small boat that took passengers to the island for a short hike , but we opted to snorkel right off the big boat for the entire stop. (Others who went on the hike said there was not much to see, so sounds like we didn’t miss out!)

Menjerite Beach snorkeling on Komodo Boat Tour

12 p.m. | We had lunch (steamed rice, noodles and one fish and one veggie entree) on the boat on the way to our next stop, Menjerite Island [pictured above].

12:45 p.m. | We arrived at Menjerite Beach for an hour of snorkeling before leaving for the highlight of the day: Rinca Island!

Rinca Island - part of Komodo National Park in Indonesia

3:15 p.m. | We arrived on Rinca Island , part of Komodo National Park, around 3:15 p.m. The national park entry fees were not included in our tour, so our guide collected our cash (600,000 IDR pp) during the boat ride to Rinca and bought our tickets on arrival.

Jonathan at the top of our Rinca Island hike in Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Our time on Rinca Island included a guided walk around the island to see the famous Komodo dragons . You are pretty much guaranteed to see dragons near the rangers’ office on this island, but we were also fortunate to see some on our hike. There are few lengths of ranger walks available on Rinca; our tour included the hour-long walk , which takes you to the top of the island [pictured above]. You can see your boat in the harbor from this viewpoint.

The hike ends at the rangers’ office, where you can take some touristy photos with the dragons and also buy cold drinks or snacks. We bought some postcards at the rangers’ office, but I saw the same postcards at the Labuan Bajo airport for about 25 percent of the price so … I advise you wait to buy postcards. 😉

Sunset at Kalong Island, Indonesia

5 p.m. | Our tour of Rinca Island ended around 4:45, and we were back on the boat by 5 p.m. to head to our sunset spot: Kalong Island. The boat staff greeted us with a snack of fresh fruit when we boarded the boat—yum!

Flying foxes with the moon at Kalong Island

6 p.m. | We arrived at Kalong Island , also known as the “flying foxes island,” to watch thousands (millions?!) of flying foxes leave the island at dusk to find food on another island. (Spoiler alert: The flying foxes are bats. Huge, terrifying bats. But it is pretty amazing to see their nightly migration!) We watched the bats from about 6:15 to 6:40 p.m., then it was time to move on to our sleeping spot. Dinner was similar to lunch (rice, noodles and two “main” options).

FYI, all meals were served on the front deck of the boat [indicated by the yellow arrow in the below photo], which is also where many passengers chose to sit and hang out during our trips between stops.

Komodo liveaboard boat with sleeping and eating areas marked

8:45 p.m. | We got into bed around 8:45 p.m., while we were still headed to our final destination for the day, so I’m not sure when we actually arrived at our docking point. There were 21 passengers on our boat, but only six of us slept “open air” on the dock, so I guess there was enough room for 15 passengers in the AC cabins (plus crew quarters) belowdeck, which was surprising!

I neglected to take a photo of the sleeping deck [circled area in above photo], which is a bummer because it was actually quite comfortable. There were four double mattresses laid out (one of ours was empty, but another couple said they came up during the night to use it because the AC in the cabins turned off, so maybe the open-air deck is actually a better option), and the crew made the beds up with sheets and pillows before evening. I actually slept much better than I expected—more soundly than I have on some camping trips and overnight bus/train trips, so nothing to complain about here.

Hiking Padar Island at sunrise in Komodo National Park

5:30 a.m. | The crew woke us up before sunrise for a hike on Padar Island (also part of Komodo National Park, so part of our 600,000 IDR entrance fees were for this island). The hike is fairly steep at parts but not too long; we reached the top [view pictured above] in less than 30 minutes. From the viewpoint, you can see three beaches with different-colored sands: pink, white and black [clockwise from top left].

Pink sand, white sand and black sand beaches on Padar Island, Komodo Naitonal Park, Indonesia

7:15 a.m. | The sun rose while we were at the top, so it was much lighter on our hike back down [pictured above]. We headed back to the boat and departed for our next stop around 7:15 a.m. Breakfast was served on the way. (Instant coffee, tea and filtered water were always available for self-service on the lower deck.)

Pink beach in Komodo National Park, Indonesia (unedited, no color changes)

9 a.m. | After a pleasant boat ride (during which we saw several pink beaches from the boat), we stopped at one for an hour of snorkeling and sand-gawking. I had seen many edited photos of pink beaches on social media, but I also knew those photos were super-saturated, so I honestly was pleased at how pink the sand was in real life [unedited Go Pro footage pictured above].

Manta ray while snorkeling at Manta Point, Komodo National Park, Indonesia

11:30 a.m. | We arrived at Manta Point for the most epic snorkeling of the trip: manta rays AND a sea turtle!! [The above photos are stills from our GoPro footage, so apologies for the low quality.] When Jonathan and I first jumped off the boat, the crew started calling to us and pointing straight down—there was a HUGE manta ray swimming right below us. It was awesome. We also saw three more manta rays and a sea turtle at this spot.

1 p.m. | We had lunch a little after 1 p.m. on our way to our final stop. We could not visit the location originally listed on our tour description because the current was too strong, so we visited Angel Island instead. (Note all tour operators for liveaboard boats in Komodo National Park reserve the right to exchange or skip spots based on water conditions; luckily we were still able to visit Manta Point, which is apparently a common trouble point that boats skip.)

Jonathan snorkeling at Angel Island in Indonesia

3:45 p.m. | We arrived at Angel Island for one last bout of snorkeling and left around 4:30 to return to the dock.

5 p.m. | We arrived back at the Labuan Bajo Harbor around 5 p.m. and returned our snorkeling gear to our tour operator by 5:30 p.m. It was then time for a shower and fish tacos with our new Dutch friends we met on the boat!

Overall, our overnight boat tour in Komodo National Park was definitely one of the highlights from our two weeks in Indonesia, and we highly recommend the experience. If you have a boat with a shower and air-conditioning, you might want to consider a 3D/2N trip, but we thought the 2D/1N was plenty sufficient for us. It seems like the longer boat trips just stop at more snorkeling/hiking spots, and we were happy with the amount we did.

Komodo Island Boat Tour (What it’s really like!)

So, you’re interested in visiting the Komodo Islands but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg to do it? You’ve come to the right place. We sought our the cheapest option of Komodo Island Tours and here’s how you can to! If you want to explore more of the island of Flores Indonesia, check out our Ultimate travel guide!

Want to watch instead of read? Watch our Labuan Bajo Vlog here:

komodo island tours

L et me start by saying that the Komodo Islands are not a cheap place to be a tourist. There’s been a steady increase in the cost of things for the last few years and this includes the famous ‘Jumping off’ point of Labuan Bajo.

Although it isn’t as cheap as its counter parts in Bali and Java, it was very close to being all the more unaffordable in 2022 when the government decided to increase the Komodo National Park entrance fee from 150,000 Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) to 3.75 MILLION IDR. That would mean just to visit the park you would be forking out $250 USD per person BEFORE you are paying for any tours or transport. I digress.

Anybody trying to stick to a budget that’s supposed to be strung across multiple years and multiple countries (Like this foolish author) you might have chosen the wrong island my friend.

Never-the-less, we endure by finding the cheapest way to see Komodo Island. This guide will explain in detail everything that happened on our Komodo Island slow boat tour including how to book and a ‘was it worth it’ wrap up so you can see if it’s the right fit for you.

booking the tour

After looking online at options to see the Komodo Island you are shown mostly the options that involve an overnight cruise that include both private and shared options but both were firmly beyond our budget.

When we arrived in Labuan Bajo we went straight to the main Street in search of alternatives. Very quickly we found that there were in-fact, several alternatives. The road is lined with tourism offices all offering multiple night cruises, one-day speed boat tours and our favourite (AKA the cheapest option) the Komodo Island Slow Boat Tour . We were greeted by a friendly attendant who took us through all the options before we agreed to the slow boat tour departing the following day.

We paid him 600,000 Per person ($40 USD) , he scribbled off a ticket and told us to meet back at the office tomorrow morning at 4:30!

Slow Boat tour

Waking at 4:10am to darkness and belting rain we made our way to the office where we stood outside with a handful of other tourists. Each trying to get as close to the wall as possible to avoid the rain.

The tour operator arrived at 4:45 and lead us 2 minutes away to the Labuan Bajo harbour, where we met with the rest of the people on the tour. It’s safe to say every tour office on the road was selling the same ticket on this boat.

We shuffled on board and were greeting with some bananas, tea and coffee. Our guide spoke about what to expect for the day and we set off to Padar Island. He then collected our Komodo national park fee of 150,000 per person so that we didn’t need to worry when we arrived on the island.

padar island

Three hours of rocky wave riding later, we approached the island and the weather improved slowly until the sun was out in full-force as we tied the boat to the dock.

Hopping off, we followed the single path on the island which lead 800 steps to the summit. About half way up there was another guide who had run ahead and was taking everybody photo with the iconic 3 beach background.

Thats the impressive photo that you see on instagram and facebook lots. We hiked on further, even passed the ‘no entry’ sign and reached the summit. Hot and sweaty we conceded that the extra steps where not really worth it so if you find yourself in a similar situation and your not sure about making it to the top, save yourself the effort and stop at the photo point! Sufficiently sweaty and regretting not applying more sunscreen we boarded the boat once more and set off to the Main event.

Komodo Island

This boat journey lasted one hour as we all settled into the boat life. Arriving at Komodo Island we disembarked from the roof and walked down a long pier to the park entrance.

We had read that Komodo dragons are huge and fierce. They’ve even been responsible for killing people on this island. We had visions of being dragged off into the jungle by a venomous monster never to be heard from again. The reality was starkly different.

Once inside we were taken on a tour through the jungle to find the dragons. We were still excited at this point and darting our eyes around into the trees.

Ultimately, the jungle trek turned out to be a 200m walk on a well-worn path to a waterhole and an unused Komodo nest.

As we walked, the Komodo park employee was saying  ‘we won’t see any dragons’ and ‘None of them are out here’ which took some shine off the experience. Then when we did a 180 and walked back out the way we came, we felt like it was a kick in the guts.

This was not the adventure we had been pitched. Instead the guide lead us to the beach where there were 5 or so Dragons completely surrounded by tourists taking photos. There was no sense of danger or adventure it felt more like a cruel zoo.

We shuffled between dragons before be guided through the dozens of stalls selling tourist knick knacks. We left the island defeated. Sorry if this isn’t what you wanted to hear but that’s how it went. I have heard that you can arrive at the island when there are less tourists and it’s a better experience but for us, it was our lowlight .

After feeling a bit down on our luck we boarded the boat and set off for our third komodo island boat tour stop. On the way we we’re fed a piece of chicken, with some rice and cucumber.

Our third stop was the (other) instagram famous spot of Pink Beach . This is one of 7 pink beaches in the world and this one gets its colour from red coral just off shore that have been smashed by the tide and mixed with the white sand.

We arrived to one of the most gorgeous docks we had of the day where the water was either crystal clear of gatorade blue. The beach itself wasn’t in high season so it didn’t boggle the mind but the pink hue was cool to see and the beach itself was really nice.

After a snorkel (which was included on the boat) we headed back to rebound for the part of the day I was most excited for.

Swimming with manta rays

Swimming with manta rays is one of those things I didn’t know I wanted to do until I knew it was a possibility. Then it instantly became something I NEEDED .

The excitement was palpable as the boat slowed and half the crew were hanging off the sides scanning the water for these huge creatures. When we thought we had seen some deep deep down (They can swim at a depth of 300 meters!) we all through our snorkels on and jump off the front of the boat. As soon as my feet left the bow I hear another tourist yell. “JELLYFISH”.

When I resurfaced there were a others complaining of stinging and we realised we had jumped right into the middle of a Smack of Jellyfish. When we realised where we were everyone swam to the boat ladder and one by one climbed to safety. It took me a while to be stung but just before I started the climb I joined the ranks of the ‘Just-been-stung-tourists’ luckily the boat crew had a medicine and started giving people the tobacco from their cigarettes to rub on their stings.

Still not sure if that works but we all blindly followed along. Now adrenaline and jellyfish sting was pumping through our veins we were still on the looking for the Mantas. But alas, we had to start our 3 hour return journey back to port in order to beat a pretty vicious storm system that was closing in.

was a komodo island tour worth it?

Final thoughts are difficult on this one…

Yes, ultimately I think it was worth it because if you’re spending the money to get to the island of Flores in Indonesia and you’re not considering AT LEAST taking this cheap option to see the Komodos, you’ve probably wasted your money getting here.

However, the tour could have been a lot better. The Komodo Island itself has sucked all sense of adventure from the experience and now it seemed almost completely designed as a photo opportunity and a way to sell things to tourists.

The Manta rays were never guaranteed but that would have just tipped us over the edge to saying that no matter what, it’s worth it.

Unfortunately it left us with a little but of as our taste in our mouths. Maybe a speed boat tour or even overnight cruise would have fit the bill better, we’ll never know!
