RheinEnergieStadion

RheinEnergieStadion

Club: 1. FC Köln | Opening: 2004 | Capacity: 50,000 (8,175 standing)

History and description

RheinEnergieStadion was built to replace Cologne’s old  Müngersdorfer Stadion with the perspective of the city being one of the host cities of the 2006 World Cup.

Demolition and construction of the stadium were done gradually so that FC Köln could keep playing their home matches at the stadium. Works were completed in 2004. The new stadium came at a cost of €119.5 million.

RheinEnergieStadion hosted five games during the 2006 World Cup , which included four group matches and the round of 16 match between Switzerland and Ukraine (0-0).

How to get to RheinEnergieStadion

RheinEnergieStadion is located in the west of Cologne, just over 6 kilometres from the city centre.

The stadium can be easily reached by car from the A1 motorway, which runs west of the city. Take exit 103 and follow the Aachener Straße east towards the city centre. After a little more than a kilometre the stadium will turn up on your right. Following the Aachener Straße further east will get you to the city centre of Cologne.

If using public transport, one can reach the stadium with tram line 1. From station Neumarkt in the city centre it takes about 15 minutes to reach stop RheinEnergieStadion.

On matchdays special tram services connect the Hauptbahnhof railway station and station Neumarkt with the stadium. The fare is included in the match ticket.

Address: Aachener Straße 999, 50933 Köln

Eat, drink, and sleep near RheinEnergieStadion

RheinEnergieStadion is located in the Stadtwald park in a predominantly residential area. There is little around in terms of eating and drinking, though the lively Cologne inner city is a short tram ride away.

There are no hotels directly near the RheinEnergieStadion, but still a few options not too far away. There is the affordable Dorint Hotel near the A1, which is about just at walking distance (but also on tram line 1), and the more expensive Best Western Hotel Brennerscher , which lies a little further south, but can still be walked from to the stadium.

Click here for an overview of hotels near RheinEnergieStadion. Alternatively, there is a wide array of options in Cologne’s city centre, which can be explored  here .

1. FC Köln Tickets

Tickets for Köln matches can be bought online , by phone +49 (0) 1805 32 56 56, at the Fanshop at the RheinEnergieStadion, or at one of the other selected sales  points (e.g. the Theaterkasse at Neumarkt metro station in the city centre).

Köln regularly sell out in the Bundesliga and it is therefore advised to book tickets in advance. If you do miss out, there might still be tickets available through the club’s official ticket exchange (for face value), or otherwise through secondary ticket websites such as viagogo , though expect to pay over face value.

Ticket prices depend on the opponent with those for cheap low profile matches ranging in price from €23.00 for a seat in one of the corners to €53.00 for a central seat at one of the long sides. Standing costs €16.00. Prices for high profile matches start at €37.00 and run up to €75.00. Prices for standing remain the same.

I attended the Bundesliga game between 1.FC Köln vs Borussia Mönchengladbach, on Saturday 14th September. Being a derby, I anticipated difficulties in getting a ticket and indeed had to purchase one through Viagogo, at approximately double the face value, after mark up and ‘extras’. Face value was around €59 (I think) for an upper tier Ost tribune (opposite side to the main stand) seat. Living in Cologne for a short while, the team sell out, or close to sell out, most non-derby/big-team opposition games so I would suggest booking as early as one can. You can sign-up as a club member for free and then attempt to purchase tickets from the official club website.

The RheinEnergie Stadion Set in parkland around 3 miles for the centre of the city, the stadium was rebuilt for the 2005 Confederations Cup and 2006 World Cup and has a capacity of just under 50,000, and a few thousand less for internationals due to seating regulations. The top tier has the secure railing along every row which I found useful to park my head against (behind me, not in front…). The legroom and seat width were both fine in my opinion, and certainly from the top tier it seemed evident that every seat had a non-impeded view of the pitch. Enough bars in the stadium so the queues weren’t prohibitive, and enough people drinking the alcoholic-free beer on sale (for high profile fixtures). Likewise the toilets – enough not to queue for any length of time. Public transport access from the city centre to the stadium (in the region of 2.5 miles) is primarily by tram #1, all the way down the long and straight Aachener Straße. After a couple of post-match (alcoholic) beers, the trams were still frequent and not at all busy.

I liked the stadium a lot, and the staff in and around the stadium were courteous and helpful. I was also impressed by the number of fans who cycled to and from the match.

The fans/atmosphere The 4,000 or so away fans over two tiers in the eastern corner of the North stand were incredibly loud for the 90+ minutes, as you would expect from a visiting team in a local derby. Sitting in the Ost tribune, fairly close to the away fans, I was staggered at the number of Mönchengladbach fans around me. Easily in the high hundreds, possibly into the thousands. And they were lively with it, giving it as large as the officially-sectioned away fans. However, at no point at all was their a threat of trouble – even at the end when the Mönchengladbach fans around me were celebrating, the worse that happened was for both sets of fans (in the same rows) giving the middle-finger salute to each other, with both hands, and even that was done with a degree of respect that never threatened to turn into a ruck.

During the game the home/ultra fans behind in the South stand sang throughout, but it always seemed to be singing for sake of it, rather than actively supporting the team when required, whereas the away fans, whilst non-stop, also upped the level depending what was happening on the pitch. All in all, I was a little disappointed with the home fans – I expected more as everyone I’ve met here recently told me about the ‘passion’ Köln fans have – I’m not doubting their love for the team but it felt more like a love for the city itself, and not necessarily the team. Not saying that’s a bad thing. Additionally, a Mönchengladbach fan I spoke to said this wasn’t their main derby but it was for Köln. Someone can confirm or advise otherwise, perhaps.

Bar culture With the RheinEnergie Stadion set in parkland, there were no bars in the immediate vicinity but 5 minutes away you have the junction of Aachener Straße and Alter Militärring with bars on three of the four corners of the junction and also down the all the streets in the local proximity. €2.60 for the local Kölsch beer per half-pint (approx.) wasn’t as cheap as I expected and whilst other German beers are way superior in my opinion, this fulfilled a need. Bratwurst from street vendors excellent value and quality at €2.50, and the abomination that is Currywurst at €3. In the stadium the (alcohol-free for this fixture) beer was priced at €4 for a half-litre, and again a decent Bratwurst sampled at €3.70. In the stadium credit/debit cards are accepted, along with the ubiquitous stadium card, but no cash. Conversely, the bars in the immediate area are cash only (cash is very much King, in German bars).

Policing As to be expected for a local derby the presence of the Politzei was high, especially at the junction mentioned above. The police would keep themselves to themselves other than telling fans drinking out of bottles to finish the drink and then bin the bottle. In my opinion it was very sensible policing – discreet but with a visible presence. Away fans came in on special trams which have to pass right through the Aachener Straße/Alter Militärring junction. Every home fan, whenever one of the away fan trams passed by, everyone would rush to the side of the pavement (fenced off and police guarded from the tramlines), sing the same song about Scheiße Mönchengladbach, along with the double-handed one-fingered salute and then get back to the business of drinking when the tram passed. An absolutely futile exercise in attempted hostility, albeit amusing to watch when you’ve had a few beers.

The game A poor Köln side with no bite upfront (or elsewhere for that matter) huffed and puffed but Mönchengladbach had far too much for them, without having to go to top gear. In particular, the Cameroon-born Swiss international Breel Embolo was by a Straße the best player on the pitch, playing deeper than he usually does, controlling the midfield for 75 or so minutes. He then reverted to being the lone striker as Mönchengladbach changed formation to kill the game off. The locals accepted the defeat, in general, with an air of expectation, and frustration of course.

RheinEnergieStadion is the name of Cologne’s stadium which as renovated for the 2006 World Cup. Home to 1. FC Köln, the stadium has a capacity of 50,000 and cost a reported €120 million to rebuild between 2001-2004.

1. FC Koln Stadium Guide

Rheinenergiestadion history.

Todays’s RheinEnergieStadion is the name of the current stadium located on the site of the former Müngersdorfer Stadion which first opened back in 1923. Under the terms of the Treaty of Versaille which was signed in 1919 after the First World War, building work was restricted and it wasn’t until four years later when Cologne’s defences were removed that the city was allowed to construct a stadium.

The stadium has undergone two significant renovations throughout its history, both as a direct result of Cologne bidding to be a host city of the FIFA World Cup. For the 1974 World Cup hosted by West Germany the city applied to be a host city and pledged to expand and modernise the Müngersdorfer Stadion but the city was unable to raise the necessary funds and thus plans for the 80,000 arena were scrapped.

A scaled down version of the work was however completed a year after the World Cup had finished with the new 61,000 capacity venue inaugurated with a friendly match between 1. FC Köln and SC Fortuna Köln on the 12th November.

With the prospect of Germany hosting the 2006 World Cup, the city of Cologne sprung into action and in typical German style had redesigned and rebuilt 1. FC Köln ground with three years to spare for the five matches it was set to host.

Reportedly based on classic English Stadiums such as Anfield , Stamford Bridge and Villa Park , it was reconfigured to seat 46,195 fans for International games with the use of rail-seating permitting a crowd of 50,000 for Bundesliga matches which permit standing.

Once in Cologne…

Things to see and do (apart from the football!):

Pretty much the first thing you see upon arriving in Cologne – or Köln, in German – is the two spires of its famous cathedral – the Kölner Dom – that dominates the city skyline. The world’s third-tallest church is one of Germany’s most visited landmarks, and you can climb the 533 steps to the top of the south tower. Although the Gothic architecture may scream German to you, Cologne is perhaps one of the least German places in the country. The people do things their own way, as evidenced in the annual Carnival – referred to as Cologne’s ‘fifth season’ – where the city turns into Europe’s party and fancy dress capital and you’ll be greeted by everyone with the local phrase ‘Kölle Alaaf!’.

Although that all culminates in one week in January, the Carnival atmosphere exists all year in Cologne, with bars and beer halls always lively hubs. But for those in search of something sweeter, head straight to the chocolate museum located on the river front to stock up on gifts to take home – if you don’t finish them off before then. The museum – one of many in Cologne that also include one of Roman ruins in the area and one looking at Nazi rule in the city inside a former Gestapo headquarters – is located next to one of the city’s numerous Christmas markets that run through November and December.

The local cuisine:

After a late night at the football, Kölner Krüstchen – a pork schnitzel (breaded escalope) and a runny fried egg atop toasted rye bread - is a great way to start the day. Mettbrötchen – raw minced meat with onions on bread – Reibekuchen (potato and onion pancakes) – and the deep-fried sweet dough, Mandelmutzen , are more classics. Asparagus season is serious business in the warmer months. Last but by no means least, beer drinkers have to try Kölsch - a top-fermented lager, served in 0.2 and 0.4 ‘Stange’ glasses. Be warned, though: the drinks will keep coming until you put a coaster over your empty glass. And never say you prefer Altbier , the beverage of choice up the river in Düsseldorf.

How to find best seats using Cologne RheinEnergieStadion Stadion Köln seating plan with seat and row numbers, DE? | Finden Sie die besten Sitzplätze im Sitzplan mit Sitzplatz- und Reihennummerierung (also known as FC Köln Stadium, Müngersdorfer Stadion)

The top view seats (beste Sitzplätze und Sicht) at Cologne RheinEnergieStadion Stadion Köln are typically the first 10-20 rows closest to the concert stage (Konzert Bühne) or the football pitch. However, the best seat numbers (Sitzplatznummern) can differ based on personal preferences. Some spectators prefer the thrill of being near the action, while others opt for a higher viewpoint for a more panoramic view of the game or the performance. Our plan is a useful tool when buying tickets, as it provides the exact seat and row numbers (Sitzplatz- und Reihennummerierung). When locating your seats, please verify your section (Block), row (Reihe), and seat (Platz) on our seating chart (Sitzplan). It’s worth noting that at RheinEnergieStadion Stadion Köln, the seat numbering (Sitzplatznummerierung) typically places seat number 1 nearest to the block with a lower block number, with the total seats per row reaching around 44. As you move round the stadium, the section numbers increment continuously. For an optimal view of the football field, select seats in the first rows of the central sideline blocks. Choose seats as near to the half-way line as possible in the lower stand sections (Unterrang Tribüne) for an unobstructed view of the entire pitch. The seating map on this page shows row numbers (Reihennummerierung). If you’re looking for a laid-back experience with a comprehensive view of the entire football pitch, the rows at the rear or in the upper sections (Mittelrang, Oberrang über Ebene) are ideal choices. Understanding the seating map layout (Übersichtsplan) can significantly boost your experience, whether you’re at a thrilling sports event or a vibrant concert. Our interactive seating maps (interaktiv Sitzplan) on this page eliminate the uncertainty in seat selection by providing precise seat numbers. Be sure to note the gate (Eingang) number on your ticket as well as the row number (Reihe nummer) within your block. Lower numbered rows generally bring you closer to the action, offering a more engaging experience. If a wider view is your preference, higher numbered rows might offer a better, full view of the entire stage, but from a further distance, which might restrict your ability to see the performer’s facial expressions. The elevation of the seats should also be considered. Higher elevations can provide a unique perspective for a comprehensive view, while lower-level seating brings you nearer to the action for a more intimate experience. In the end, the best seats in RheinEnergieStadion Stadion Köln are a matter of personal preference, and you can use the virtual seat finder plan diagram (Saalplan) on this page to select row and individual seat numbers (Platznummer) with the optimal view from my seat.

RheinEnergieStadion: FC Cologne

koln stadium tour

Fynn Korsen / Flickr.com

1. Fußball-Club Köln 01/07 e. V are perhaps better known as FC Köln, in German, or FC Cologne in English. They play their games at the RheinEnergieStadion, a football ground formerly known as Müngersdorfer Stadion but renamed because of sponsorship. The German side was formed in 1948 when two different clubs were merged. Kölner BC dated back to 1901, whilst the wonderfully named Spielvereinigung 1907 Köln-Sülz was formed in 1907 and merged with Fußball Club 1908 Hertha Sülz in 1919. If that all sounds a little bit complicated then don’t worry about it. The most important to know is that the club has been called FC Köln, to use the German name, since 1949.

Equally as complicated is the history of the stadium that the club plays its football in. We’ll tell you about it in more detail in the ‘Stadium History’ section later, but for now you should be aware that the ground that they play in now is a completely different one to that which first opened its doors in 1923. That ground was demolished and rebuilt in the 1970s, with the stadium that replaced it being completely renovated in 2004 to make it into the one we know now. The club is actually the fourth largest in Germany, having enjoyed numerous successes over the years. That includes two Bundesliga titles in both 1964 and 1978.

RheinEnergieStadion Seating Plan and Where to Sit

koln stadium tour

RheinEnergieStadion is designed in a more traditionally English style of having four separate stands rather the continental style of a continuous bowl of seating. The North and South stands are behind the two goals, whilst the East and West Tribunes run along the side of the pitch. The West Tribune is what would typically be considered as the main stand, featuring the dugouts and executive boxes.

FC Cologne Ticket Prices

How much you’ll pay for your ticket depends on a number of things. How old are you? Where in the ground would you like to sit? What competition is it that you’re heading to watch? As an example, if you’d gone to see Cologne play Hamburg in 2017 you’d have paid anywhere between €9.50 and €65 depending on the answers to those variables.

How To Get FC Cologne Tickets

As with most major football clubs in Europe, the best place to head for tickets to Cologne matches is the club’s official website. There is also a phone number that you can call and the staff usually speak English, or if you’d rather than you’ll likely be able to get a ticket at the stadium directly if the match is against a less popular opposition.

Getting To RheinEnergieStadion

Train – It takes about eleven hours to get the train from London to Cologne, normally going via Brussels. Once you’re in the city you’ll have around five miles to travel to get from the city centre to the ground. The best way to get to the stadium is probably by tram, with special ones put on from the Hauptbahnhof Train Station to the ground on match days. You can also get Tram 1 from Neumarkt Station.

Bus – Not everyone likes to get the tram, so if you’d rather get a bus then number 143 stops within walking distance of the RheinEnergieStadion.

Car – The main roads that run closest to the stadium are the A1 and the A4, but if you’d like more specific information than that then you might want to get a sat-nav or something.

By Air – Cologne/Bonn Airport is the closest to the centre of the city, located less than fifteen miles away.

Taxi – A taxi from the centre of Cologne out to the ground will take about twenty minutes, traffic depending. It will cost you somewhere between €15 and €20.

Parking Near RheinEnergieStadion

There are about seven and a half thousand car parking spaces at the ground. Not a huge amount considering the number of people that can attend matches, so you might want to have a look around the local area to see if there are any spaces without parking restrictions.

Not only do the stadium provide plenty of places to eat, drink, and relieve yourself, but sight lines are excellent and there is even a stadium map dedicated to the different types of food you can buy and where they are. Tasty.

Hospitality

koln stadium tour

There are 48 VIP lounges located within the RheinEnergieStadion, so if you’re hoping to find somewhere exciting to watch Cologne matches then you’re in luck. There are three additional event and incentive lounges, along with 18,000 business seats and a stadium restaurant.

Private Hire

Motivational workshops, company meets, personal celebrations; there are many different events you might wish to host at the RheinEnergieStadion and if you wish to do so then get in touch with the club who can tell you more.

Stadium Tours & Museum

Tours at the Rheinenergiestadion promise access to the most exclusive areas of the ground and plenty of technical data and inside info from the tour guide. You’ll pay €12.50 regardless of your age, although you can pay as much as €21.00 per person for the guided tours with special guides. There’s a museum at the ground too.

About FC Cologne

koln stadium tour

1. FC Köln was founded in 1948 when two other clubs were merged together, namely Kölner Ballspiel-Club 1901 and SpVgg Sülz 07. The club began to play its matches in the Oberliga West and it didn’t take long for them to gain some success; they won their divisional title in 1954. When the new Bundesliga was created in 1963, 1. FC Köln was one of the first sixteen teams to play in it. Once again it didn’t take long for the club to enjoy some success, winning the inaugural Bundesliga season and gaining the right to play in the next season’s European Cup. They played Liverpool in the quarter-final but nothing could separate the two sides after three matches and, because penalties hadn’t been invented then, Köln went out on the toss of a coin!

The club has enjoyed almost as much success as disappointment over the years, winning four DFB-Pokals, but reached the final without emerging victorious six times; although they have won the Bundesliga four times and only finished as runners-up once. Perhaps the most frustrating thing for the Cologne when it comes to the DFB-Pokal finals that they missed out is the fact that they reached final three times in the 1970s but lost every match. Having said that, in 2002 the club failed to score a goal for more than eleven and a half games, setting an unwanted Bundesliga record in the process. One other thing worth mentioning about Cologne is the fact that, like many German clubs, it’s not just a football team. 1. FC Köln is a sports club, also including handball, table-tennis and gymnastics clubs.

RheinEnergieStadion History

koln stadium tour

If 1. FC Köln’s history is a convoluted one then that’s as nothing compared to the club’s home ground. It originally opened in 1923 under the name Müngersdorfer Stadion, costing just shy of 48 million Deutsche Mark to build. Its opening not only gave the city of Cologne more prestige in Germany but it also brought the region more sporting success. It’s difficult to know what the first official match was at the stadium, but it hosted its first international match in 1927 when the Netherlands came to play Germany. The national side has only lost once when they’ve played at the ground, which is pretty impressive.

When the stadium opened in 1923 it was originally a running track, something that allowed them to invite non-sports people to run on the track when they held meets there. In 1929 over 38,000 people turned up to one such meet. In 1972 the stadium was completely renovated, with the process taking three years to complete. It was renovated again from 2002 until 2004, getting it ready to host five matches for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The renovation that took place after the turn of the millennium did not put the running track back in place, instead allowed the supporters to be much closer to the pitch and therefore the action of the game.

Future Developments

koln stadium tour

There has been a plan for some time to add 25,000 seats to the RheinEnergieStadion, though nothing concrete has been put in place to do that as of yet. The lease was extended for 10 years in 2024 though, so they have plenty of time to make their minds up.

DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — The European Championship in Germany is all about tried and tested stadiums with a rich soccer history.

Unlike at some recent World Cups, there’s been no rush to finish stadiums on time. All but one of Germany’s 10 venues hosted games at the 2006 World Cup and none have undergone major changes.

All capacities are given in the all-seated configuration used for Euro 2024, meaning the figure is typically lower than for club games where many fans can stand.

Here is a guide to the 10 stadiums and all of the games taking place at each:

OLYMPIASTADION

City: Berlin

Capacity for Euro 2024: 71,000

Games: Spain vs. Croatia (June 15), Poland vs. Austria (June 21), Netherlands vs. Austria (June 25), one game in the round of 16 (June 29), one quarterfinal game (July 6), the final (July 14).

Built for the 1936 Olympics under Nazi rule, the Olympiastadion was renovated to host the 2006 World Cup final and also held the Champions League final in 2015.

At club level, it’s the home of the German Cup final each season and also hosts home games for second-division Hertha Berlin.

The Olympiastadion had a cameo appearance in this season’s Champions League when Union Berlin trekked westward from its home in East Berlin to host games. The idea was for more fans to be able to watch, though not all of them were happy about playing at the home of their cross-town rival.

MUNICH FOOTBALL ARENA

City: Munich

Capacity for Euro 2024: 66,000

Games: Germany vs. Scotland (June 14), Romania vs. Ukraine (June 17), Slovenia vs. Serbia (June 20), Denmark vs. Serbia (June 25), one game in the round of 16 (July 2), one semifinal game (July 9).

Better known as the Allianz Arena for Bayern Munich games — stadium sponsorships are banished for the tournament — this stadium will host the opening game of Euro 2024 as Germany takes on Scotland on June 14.

It was home to the German league champion 11 years running until Bayer Leverkusen finally ended Bayern Munich’s reign this season. The stadium opened in 2005 and was originally shared by Bayern and its local rival 1860 Munich, but 1860 sold its share due to financial problems, moved out and now plays in the third division. The stadium’s location on the outskirts of Munich can mean long queues for trains back into town.

The arena branched out when it hosted Germany’s first regular-season NFL game in 2022 when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-16. It’s due to host a Carolina Panthers game later this year.

BVB STADION DORTMUND

City: Dortmund

Capacity for Euro 2024: 62,000

Games: Italy vs. Albania (June 15), Turkey vs. Georgia (June 18), Turkey vs. Portugal (June 21), France vs. Poland (June 25), one game in the round of 16 (June 29), one semifinal game (July 10).

The fans of Borussia Dortmund — BVB for short — know it as the Westfalenstadion, the cavernous beating heart of their club for over 50 years, but it’s also called Signal Iduna Park due to a long-running sponsorship deal, which doesn’t apply during the European Championship.

Dortmund, which lost this year’s Champions League final to Real Madrid, is famed for its loud “Yellow Wall” of fans in a standing section, but the stadium is going all-seater for Euro 2024, as part of changes that bring down its capacity by nearly 20,000 from the 81,365 who can pack in for club games. Having one of Europe’s biggest and loudest stadiums is a point of pride in Dortmund, an industrial city in western Germany’s Ruhr region.

STUTTGART ARENA

City: Stuttgart

Capacity for Euro 2024: 51,000

Games: Slovenia vs. Denmark (June 16), Germany vs. Hungary (June 19), Scotland vs. Hungary (June 23), Ukraine vs. Belgium (June 26), one game in the quarterfinals (July 5).

The venue’s historic name is the Neckarstadion after the river that flows through Stuttgart. Under that name, it hosted the 1988 European Cup final as Dutch club PSV Eindhoven beat Benfica of Portugal on penalties.

Since then, it’s had a string of different names due to sponsorship details, most recently as the MHPArena for this season as host club Stuttgart finished second in the Bundesliga to qualify for the Champions League.

VOLKSPARKSTADION

City: Hamburg

Capacity for Euro 2024: 49,000

Games: Poland vs. Netherlands (June 16), Croatia vs. Albania (June 19), Georgia vs. Czech Republic (June 22), Czech Republic vs. Turkey (June 26), one quarterfinal game (July 5).

The stadium sits in a large park and dates back nearly a century to 1925, though it was fully rebuilt in the 1950s and then again from 1998 through 2000.

Hamburger SV plays at the stadium and has been in the second division this season. Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk moved in earlier this season for three home Champions League games since it was unable to play at home because of the Russian invasion. That was the first time the Volksparkstadion had hosted European games since 2010 and a useful practice run for Euro 2024.

DUESSELDORF ARENA

City: Duesseldorf

Capacity for Euro 2024: 47,000

Games: Austria vs. France (June 17), Slovakia vs. Ukraine (June 21), Albania vs. Spain (June 24), one game in the round of 16 (July 1), one quarterfinal game (July 6).

The only Euro 2024 venue which wasn’t also used when Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup, this gray, boxy venue last year hosted the Invictus Games , a sports event for wounded, injured and ill service personnel and veterans which was founded by Britain’s Prince Harry.

The stadium was an unsuccessful candidate for the NFL’s expansion into Germany and was briefly converted into a vaccination center for the local area during the COVID-19 pandemic. The last club game at the stadium this season brought heartbreak for local fans as Fortuna Duesseldorf threw away a 3-0 lead and missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga.

COLOGNE STADIUM

City: Cologne

Capacity for Euro 2024: 43,000

Games: Hungary vs. Switzerland (June 15), Scotland vs. Switzerland (June 19), Belgium vs. Romania (June 22), England vs. Slovenia (June 25), one game in the round of 16 (June 30).

Historically, it’s been known as Muengersdorfer Stadion after the district of Cologne where it’s located. The local crowds are known for their passionate support of Cologne in league games, though this season ended with relegation from the Bundesliga. The stadium stepped in at short notice in 2020 to host the Europa League final during the COVID-19 pandemic as Spain’s Sevilla beat Italian club Inter Milan 3-2 without a crowd.

FRANKFURT ARENA

City: Frankfurt

Games: Belgium vs. Slovakia (June 17), Denmark vs. England (June 20), Switzerland vs. Germany (June 23), Slovakia vs. Romania (June 26), one game in the round of 16 (July 1).

Home to Eintracht Frankfurt, which won the Europa League in 2022, the club’s fans still know this arena by its traditional name, the Waldstadion, though it’s currently the Deutsche Bank Park because of a sponsorship deal.

There has been a stadium on the site since 1925 and it hosted the opening game of the 1974 World Cup as Brazil drew 0-0 with Yugoslavia. The stadium held two NFL games last year, including a win for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, as the league expands its presence in Germany.

LEIPZIG STADIUM

City: Leipzig

Capacity for Euro 2024: 40,000

Games: Portugal vs. Czech Republic (June 18), Netherlands vs. France (June 21), Croatia vs. Italy (June 24), one game in the round of 16 (July 2).

The only Euro 2024 stadium which is in the former East Germany, this venue was built for the 2006 World Cup on the site of the Zentralstadion. It had been East Germany’s largest with a capacity estimated at 100,000 or more. Set up by drinks giant Red Bull, the newly formed Leipzig club took over the stadium in 2010 and renamed it the Red Bull Arena for club games.

ARENA AUFSCHALKE

City: Gelsenkirchen

Capacity for Euro 2024: 50,000

Games: Serbia vs. England (June 16), Spain vs. Italy (June 20), Georgia vs. Portugal (June 26), one game in the round of 16 (June 30).

There hasn’t been much to celebrate at this stadium in recent years. It’s home to Schalke, which was a Champions League team in the 2018-19 season but dropped out of the German top league altogether in 2021, only to return and then be relegated again last year. Schalke spent this season fighting possible relegation to the third division — and chronic financial woes — but eventually survived in the second tier.

The stadium was state-of-the-art when it was completed in 2001 with a retractable roof and a field which can be moved out of the stadium for concerts. It hosted the 2004 Champions League final as Jose Mourinho’s Porto beat Monaco 3-0. After Euro 2024, the stadium will be one of three German venues on Taylor Swift’s Eras tour.
