Knit one, Crochet too, then go make something to eat!

Jo’s journey.

joy's journey crochet blanket

Another project that I have on the go at the moment is the Joy’s Journey blanket designed by Dedri over at  “Look what I Made” .

I found the pattern one night when i was browsing through Ravelry looking for something to make (like a lot of other nights – I think I love finding patterns nearly as much as I find starting them!!).  I decided that I wanted to make a nice cosy crochet blanket and this one looked straightforward enough to make, and the use of variegated yarn made it interesting.

The next morning, I went straight to my local yarn store to get the yarn the pattern suggested – Scheepjes Noorse Wol.  It was just after Christmas and the shop was REALLY busy.  I got chatting to a lady who had been knitting for years.  She was making a knitted chess-set for her friend (a commissioned job I think!).  It looked really intricate and she needed a lot of yarn…but I waited patiently. I’d not heard of Scheepjes before and wasn’t entirely sure how to pronounce it…silly really.  After a bit of a wait, I managed to get the right yarn by pointing it it on the website!!

I was really excited to start, I had 12 lovely balls of gorgeous looking yarn and they all needed using!!  The Scheepjes yarn is really beautiful to crochet with.  It has a slight sheen and slips really nicely on the hook.  I’m using a size 6mm hook.

dsc00834_edited

Once I started off, this blanket grew really quickly at first and I was flying round.  I did have a couple of issues with it starting to “twist” in the middle, so if you make it, pay close attention to capturing what Dedri calls the “hidden corner stitch” to make sure that your blanket isn’t lob-sided.

Despite the slight wonkyness (which i’m hoping i can fix with a bit of blocking, i’m really pleased with how its going so far.

dsc00835_edited

I decided that this really needed to go to stay with a friend of mine who moved to Australia a few years ago (I miss her!!).  I’m really excited to be going to visit her in a couple of months time though and wanted to take her a hand-made gift!  It sounds silly I know taking a blanket to someone who lives in a country where it is hot most of the year.  She tells me though that in their winter, sometimes it drops down to 10-15 degrees and with no heating in the house it gets a bit chilly in the evenings (bbrrhh, can you imagine it….sometimes the English summer barely gets above that!! I suppose its all relative though!) I’m hoping that she can use it to snuggle up on the sofa with in the winter.

I’m so pleased by how this blanket is turning out, that I’ve just made a trip back to my favourite yarn shop to buy more yarn…enough to make me one of these gorgeous blankets too!

A couple of tips for you that I’ve found useful.  I struggled to find the last corner stitch, so I found that putting a locking stitch marker in the last stitch as I crocheted it meant that I could find it again easily when i got to the next round.

20170121_170948_edited

I’m also terrible at having a million different projects on the go at once.  I’m also not very careful about putting projects away, so to protect the work that I’ve done, I find putting a locking stitch marker through the last stitch that I’ve crocheted means that I can remove the hook without fear of it unravelling.  I can also easily find where I need to start again that way too.

I’ll post more pictures as it continues to grow!

I found it kind of sweet that you use the archaic form of the word lopsided (being lobsided). I did not know that lobsided ever a word until looking it up. The adjective was somewhat abandoned decades ago by most people, but it is still applicable. There are few things better than learning new words!

The English language is so very interesting.

Also, I love your yarn choice. The sheen is gorgeous.

😂 maybe I’m either stuck in the past or bad at spelling?? I suppose I shouldn’t call it Gaol but Jail too? 🤦‍♀️😂

Joy’s Cushion – Continuous Crochet Square video tutorial

Let me show you a neat way to use variegated yarn to make a quick gift or decorate your house with a lovely continuous crochet square cushion. The cushion is based on the pattern Joy’s Journey by Dedri Uys . The original yarn for this cushion is Scheepjes Noorse Sokkenwol Color which is no longer available, but a great replacement yarn is Scheepjes Our Tribe .

joy's journey crochet blanket

  • Written pattern by Dedri Uys
  • *** Video tutorial ***
  • Scheepjes Our Tribe yarn
  • Working instructions for making a cushion in this post

You will need 2 balls of Scheepjes Our Tribe . I used two colors, one for each side of the cushion, giving a fun two-sided look. You will also need a 45cm x 45cm cushion inner.

joy's journey crochet blanket

Scheepjes Our Tribe is available from Wool Warehouse (UK/Int) , Love Crafts (USA) , Caro’s Atelier (NL/EU) or your favorite Scheepjes Stockist .

Gauge and size

Gauge is not essential for this project and it’s not needed to make a gauge swatch. If your gauge is similar to mine you will be able to make a 45cm x 45cm cushion.

Video tutorial

If you would like to make a cushion or blanket of your own using Dedri’s pattern, I have a short video tutorial to show you how to make Joy’s Journey.

Joy’s Cushion – Free Crochet Work Description

To make a cushion do the following:

  • Make 2 identical continuous squares using the pattern Joy’s Journey till each square is approximately 45cm x 45cm.
  • Work away the yarn tails of both squares.
  • Place the two squares with their backs to each-other. Using one of the yarn colors used to make the squares, join 3 edges with single crochet stitches. In the corners work 3 single crochet stitches.
  • Put the cushion inner inside the joined squares.
  • Join the final edges of the squares with single crochet stitches.
  • Work away your last yarn tail.

I am really happy with my cushion and my boys love it too. My eldest said it was the softest cushion he has ever laid his head on.

joy's journey crochet blanket

The two colors I chose are completely different, so my cushion has a metamorphoses every time I turn it around.

I do love your cushion! Thank you for the pattern, when I finish my WIP’s (too much to make, not enough time!), I want to make this cushion. I love the idea of the two different coloursways. Clever.

I would love to see it when it’s done 🙂

Esther, a huge thank you for all the time, effort, and detail you put into each and every video. I have watched many, and always feel confident starting a project if I know you have made videos for it. I am reasonably new to crochet (3 years or so) and was unsure of patterns and techniques. But with the aid of your wonderful videos, I have developed a much wider knowledge of the art, and a tremendous passion for crochet. So, I thank you and your wonderful voice and hands. They calm this flustered anxious soul, and enable me to breathe 🙂

Thank you for making this video, Esther. Your cushions are lovely!

Blooming Joy Blanket

Welcome to another journey. This time it is the Blooming Joy blanket. I think this blanket has a classical vibe, so any royal colors would look perfect. Plus, the best part is the repeatable extension, this means that once you are done with the entire pattern, you can go back to round 54 and increase your blanket to the size you need.

joy's journey crochet blanket

That is how highly textured this pattern is, so it should look great in one color too.

The entire pattern will be posted here (image links will be added below as soon as published), but if you prefer to work with a printed pattern or want to work faster, you can order the entire PDF pattern here .

This crocheted blanket is an original design that is easy to complete. The entire blanket requires only three crochet stitches - chain stitch, single crochet and the popcorn stitch. The pattern includes the instructions, a list of materials and the yarn amounts needed for a finished blanket approximately 41” x 58”.

Pattern calls for 16 skeins of Plymouth Encore yarn: 4 burgundy, 5 deep orange and 7 cream.

The pattern can be customized to your own color choices. Also, rows can be added or taken away to create the size you would like.

Look At What I Made

Passionate about crochet, simple joy blanket: reveal.

Simple joy.  Simple, simple joy.  That is what creating offers us, regardless of what is going on in our lives.  Sometimes the projects we make are stunning and intricate;  sometimes, they are simple and easy.  Sometimes they celebrate the best in our lives, and sometimes they help us through the worst.

joy's journey crochet blanket

As per usual, yours truly finished the Chunky Monkey version of this blanket at the very last minute (midnight last night…), so taking photos for my ‘Reveal’ post was a bit of a challenge.

I ended up taking it to work with me this morning, taking photos as the surroundings and light allowed.  Let’s just pretend I had always intended to take you along on my commute to work, shall we?

I remembered the red bench at Barons Court Station, where I took some photographs of my Lynda blanket , so that was my first port of call.  ( You can see some photos in the Lynda blanket Reveal Post ).  My first photo was of the Colour Crafter baby version and the Chunky Monkey toddler child version stacked on top of each other for comparison.

joy's journey crochet blanket

As you can see, there is quite a difference in size.  The Colour Crafter version I originally made more than two years ago is 80cm x 85cm.  The Chunky Monkey version I just finished and will be sharing the pattern for next week is 105cm x 130cm.  The brilliant thing about this pattern is that it is quite straightforward to make it wider or longer without doing a lot of complicated maths.

I tried to do a gorgeous drapey photo too, but it didn’t work out quite as well as I’d hoped…

joy's journey crochet blanket

I went through Margravine Cemetery , hunting for a good place to drape some blankets.  The tree-stump I had previously photographed my Lydia Blanket on was soaked through, so that was out of the question.  (The reveal post for that blanket reads scarily similar to this one in last-minutedness!)

On I trudged until I found a wall miraculously containing clips to drape things on.  I’ll show you a close-up of the Stripes first.  Gotta love some colourful textured stripes!

joy's journey crochet blanket

And here they are zoomed out:  baby version in Colour Crafter ( left ) and bigger version in Chunky Monkey ( right ).  As I look at this photo, I can actually feel my jaw tingling in the way it does when I can’t contain a smile or get goosebumps or eat something super sour.  Simple!  Joy!

joy's journey crochet blanket

I tried to get an artistic photo of the blanket all spread out (given the location/time/last-minute constraints)…

joy's journey crochet blanket

… but it is super hard if you don’t have a gorgeous shabby chic bed/bedroom to do it in.

So I will leave you with my favourite photo of this blanket in an actual shabby chic setting…

joy's journey crochet blanket

I hope to see you back here next week when I share the pattern for the Simple Joy Blanket.

The Joyful Bits

If you have a few more minutes, I would like to share my simple joy moments from the last week.  These were the moments I allowed myself to notice, and I am SO glad that I did:

Walking to the Themes during lunchtime for the first time in a decade – 5 minutes from work and 30 seconds from where Christiaan and I used to live before we had kids.

joy's journey crochet blanket

Discovering these lemon-scented geraniums (pelargoniums) in the bathroom at Salisbury station.  They are my very favourite plant (amazing in tea or scones or Malva Pudding).  My one is more than a decade old, and every time I brush past it, the scent throws me back into childhood and grounds me in adulthood in equal measures.

joy's journey crochet blanket

Noticing the way that raindrops form little diamonds in Boy 3’s hair on a rainy chatty walk to school.

Eating a fantastic meal with my family and having all three boys behave(ish) for the first time.

Working on the Simply Charlotte design.

Dear Dedri, I have anguished over my own photography, which is awful and think I need to take some classes to help me show off my work. After reading this blog post, I have this delightful picture in my mind of all my favorite designers wandering around different landscapes in England with crocheted blankets in hand looking for the most picturesque sights. I’m going to hold on to that daydream when I’m trying to photo my Rozeta, which is at about 75% now. By the way, even with my poor photography, everyone who viewed my shot of Sophie’s Dream was really impressed. Thanks again for sharing your creative journey. Julie
