JEFF The Brotherhood are a rock band hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, United States who formed in 2001. Since their debut in 2002 they have become one of the most acclaimed cult acts in American rock, working with everyone from Jack White to Dan Auerbach and releasing eight studio albums.
JEFF The Brotherhood is made up of Jake and Jamin Orrall, two brothers who are sons of the singer, songwriter and producer Robert Ellis Orrall. Since they were born to a highly respected singer/songwriter they grew up surrounded by music, and it was only a matter of time before they started playing it themselves. With that in mind, I suppose it makes sense that they’d start playing in two separate bands right off the bat, forming JEFF in 2001, while they were still in high school, and a side project punk band that was simply called The Sex. The enterprising duo put out their first record with The Sex soon after forming, and used the money that they made off the back of that to fund the recording and release of JEFF’s first record 2002’s “I Like You”.
The band were still in their teens at this point and so they diversified, going off to play in
a number of rock bands. They would come back together from time to time to release albums together, and Jamin even saw some success in the garage-pop band Be Your Own Pet. However, after that band split in 2008, the brothers came back together in Chicago to focus on JEFF full-time while Jamin studied at Columbia College Chicago. He then dropped out of the college and the duo moved back to their home town Nashville, cementing the moment by changing the bands name from JEFF to JEFF The Brotherhood. Moving back home was the best thing that the band could have done as their 2009 album “Heavy Days” proved to be their breakthrough record.
With the bands newfound national attention, they went off on tour to capitalise on it and by 2011 they’d collaborated with fellow buzz band Best Coast on an E.P and released a live album with Jack White’s Third Man Records. At the end of the year, their families record label Infinity Cat Recordings, signed a distribution deal with Warner Bros. and ever since, the band have continued doing what they do. They’re building a devoted fanbase all over the world, continuing to release records and prove themselves as one of the most captivating (and loud) live acts in the world. The sky’s the limit for them, and they come highly recommended.
Live reviews
JEFF The Brotherhood brings more energy and volume than you might expect from a (mostly) two-piece rock band. Twenty-something real-life brothers Jake (Vocals/Guitar) and Jamin (Drums) Orrall have both been playing music for well over a decade, together and in other bands, and their musicianship comes across in their shows--they're not just cranked-to-11 noise.
I've been to several JEFF shows during my four years living in Nashville, and while the audience is usually dominated by teenagers, college students, and young adults, thirty-somethings like me can feel right at home at one of their performances--just stay a few rows back if you don't want to deal with stagediving and crowdsurfing. It's all in good fun, often initiated by friends of the band who are in other Nashville rock bands.
Sonically, JEFF mixes earwormy guitar riffs (two-minute long "Shredder") with slower dirges (six-minute plus "Whatever I Want"), keeping the audience's attention with a variety of speeds (but mostly up-tempo). Fan favorite "You Got The Look" is bound to get you pumpin' your fist in the air. Over the past year, JEFF has taken to bringing a couple of friends (guitar or bass, keyboards) up on stage for the later parts of their set. This is my only criticism of JEFF's live show, as I don't think that this adds any real value and probably dictates that during this part they play songs that aren't among their best.
But the great thing about a JEFF show is that live is really the best way to experience this band's music; while so many bands use studio trickery to make cool sounds that they can't replicate onstage, JEFF is in its element in front of a roomful of people. You can't really get a great sense of what this band is about just by playing a record.
So go out and see JEFF The Brotherhood the next time they're in your town. You can't help but be happy at a JEFF party.

Absolutely amazing show that they put on and environment was hysterical and super hipster-y and fun. I met the band they were super chill and sweet especially the drummer and I got a pic!

JEFF the Brotherhood and Hunters Supporting The Kills On Tour
JEFF the Brotherhood and Hunters, will be supporting the Kills on their tour next year. The bands will be starting in Chicago on January 20th and wrapping up the tour in New York on February 11th.
JEFF the Brotherhood’s summer release of We Are the Champions saw accolades from Spin, Rolling Stone (Critics Pick by David Fricke), Pitchfork, New York Times, NPR, KEXP, WNYU, WRAS, Sirius XMU, among many others. Since the release, the band has kept busy sharing stages with the likes of Raconteurs, Fucked Up, the Greenhornes, Pentagram and more, in addition to making their television debut on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.
Hailing from Brooklyn NY Hunters music is charged with wild energy led by singers/guitarists Derek Watson and Isabel Almeida. Mixing boy/girl harmonies with super catchy guitars, their songs tend to get stuck in your head before you even finish listening to them. Somewhere along the way they got with Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs who mixed their upcoming EP, and former Smashing Pumpkin James Iha on the production end. It’s been a long and winding road for JEFF the Brotherhood. Started as a pet project between real-life bros Jake and Jamin Orrall in 2001, the band has built a large and fervent following behind their hybridized brand of punk and blues rock. In recent months, they’ve signed a major-label deal with Warner Bros. Records, coproduced a new album with Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach, and watched said album, this summer’s Hypnotic Nights , hit No. 1 on the CMJ Album Charts. Ask the Orralls, though, and they’ll be the first to tell you that JEFF’s success was no overnight endeavor. This Wednesday, October 17, the band heads into Santa Barbara for a show at Velvet Jones. I caught up with Jake to talk touring, triumphs, and the slow growth of JEFF the Brotherhood.
What did the early days of JEFF the Brotherhood sound like? It was pretty weird, lots of experimentation and noisy shit. It was more of performance art when we first started, mostly because we didn’t know how to play our instruments. Then it changed when we started touring.
Was it hard to transition to life in a tour van? Well, when we first started touring in 2006, we could do like one tour a year. We booked it all on Myspace and were playing in kids’ basements. It wasn’t until 2009, when we put out Heavy Days, that we decided to start touring as a job. But that meant moving out of our apartments and putting our shit in storage and quitting our jobs to live in the van. We self-booked from the road for eight months before finally getting a booking agent, and then we just told him to keep us on the road the whole time. We slept on couches for another 13 months or so, and then we started making enough money to rent a space in Nashville again. And that’s not saying much. I mean, in Nashville you can get a really nice place for $250 a month.
Why play so many shows? Well, we’re not as good at making albums as we are at playing shows, that’s for sure. [ Laughs .] The reason we do it our way is because we have to survive as a band, or we did. Now we have Warner Bros. backing us if we want to make a record, which is great. But up until the last album, we only had what we could make on tour. We didn’t blow up overnight. The kind of bands that get to go in the studio and take three months to make a record, they’ve got someone backing them. Then they go out and do a few tours because there’s a lot of buzz behind them, but if you don’t lay the groundwork — if you don’t lay a solid foundation of working hard and building a fanbase — as soon as someone pulls the funding, you’re fucked, you’re done.
Do you look back fondly on doing the DIY thing? I don’t think I could even go back to touring in the van, doing 260 shows a year, playing in basements. I like having a Sprinter; I like the air conditioning; I like to watch movies on Netflix, you know? I put my time in. [ Laughs .] But it’s so much fun when you first start out; it’s like you’re on an adventure every single day, especially when you’re self-booking tours because you have no idea what’s going to happen. Like, we were lucky if we made $25 and we got a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter. That was the best feeling ever.
How did the Warner Bros. deal shake down? It was huge. We were running our own label and were living comfortably off of that. A lot of other labels were asking us if we needed any help, but it wasn’t until Warner Bros. that we really felt they could offer us anything. They had this great attitude: They didn’t really care about signing us or not; they just wanted to be a part of it because they believed in it. We eventually worked out a deal, which took like a year, because we really wanted to know what they were going to bring to the table.
How did you guys hook up with Dan Auerbach? We had met before. He came to us and wanted to do some tracks in his studio, which is down the street from my house. We had two weeks blocked off already, and when we went to check out the studio, we were so impressed that we decided to do the whole thing there — and we had a really good time. [Laughs.] Most of the time we spent with Dan was just fucking with each other and joking around.
How did he fit in as a coproducer? We had already written [the album], and we already had production notes for every song, so there wasn’t too much room for him. It was a coproduced thing, but he was really there to help us get really good sounds and good vocal takes. His role was to be there to bounce stuff off of. Every other record we’ve made was just us saying, ‘’This is what we’re doing, and it’s our way,’’ and you can get lost in that and miss out on a lot of really good ideas. I’m definitely looking forward to working with a producer again.
Are you happy with the result? Yeah! We’ve done most of our records for next to no money in three days. Honestly, we’ve always wanted them to sound the best that they can, but I think this was the first time we made a record that actually sounded like we wanted it to sound. It was really exciting.
JEFF the Brotherhood plays Velvet Jones (423 State St.) on Wednesday, October 17, at 8 p.m. Call (805) 965-8676 or visit newnoisesb.org for tickets and info.

Reed, Wicks Spent 3 Months Together Focusing on Football, Brotherhood
Bill huber | jun 1, 2024.
GREEN BAY, Wis. – Green Bay Packers receivers Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks can shake opposing defensive backs, but they couldn’t shake each other.
They met at the 2023 Senior Bowl. A month later, they connected again at the Scouting Combine. They also crossed paths on predraft visits.
In the 2023 NFL Draft, the Packers selected Reed in the second round and Wicks in the fifth round.
“It all makes sense that we’re here together,” Reed said at Packers OTAs on Wednesday.
As the offense got humming down the stretch, thanks in large part to their increasing comfort and production, Reed and Wicks discussed training together during the offseason. So, after combining for 103 receptions and 12 receiving touchdowns, Reed and Wicks rented a four-bedroom house near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and trained together for about three months before returning to Green Bay for team workouts.
“Just the idea of us seeing the potential that we have and just knowing how much better we can be,” Reed said. “That’s what we talked about and that’s the goal that we set for each other. Holding each other to that standard. Getting up, going to work out. Just, ‘All right, brother.’ Just being the best we can be, really.”
They focused on improving their speed and route-running during their daily workouts.
“It went good,” Wicks said. “It’s always good being around your teammates and your brothers and working out together. That was fun. It was big time to learn from him … Just going through the things that we did this last year that we can change and get better at it.”
Even as a rookie, Wicks established himself as one of the better route-runners in the NFL. He tried to impart some of his skill to Reed, who got open with regularity throughout his rookie season.
Reed, meanwhile, emerged as a playmaker with the ball in his hands. So, he helped Wicks with his run-after-catch skill, even though Wicks led the team’s receivers in yards after the catch per catch and missed tackles.
“We talk about how he’s really good with his in-steps, his releases, and stuff like that. I kind of wanted to get better at that,” Reed said. “And he just wanted to get better at running out of routes, being fast and stuff like that. We just coached each other up on those tips. Kind of dug in each other’s toolbox and helped each other out.”
Their time together was about more than what they could do on the field. It was about improving their bond off the field.
“Just getting to know him as a brother, No. 1, even more,” Reed said. “Just getting to know somebody is important before even stepping on the field. Just coaching each other up and holding each other accountable to things we can do better. We coach each other. We don’t have a problem telling each other, which is what I love about the relationship with Wicks. We’re always going to coach each other up, try to get the best out of us. That’s our relationship.”
Based on their breakout rookie seasons, Reed and Wicks look like pillars of this new-generation Packers offense.
Reed led the team with 64 receptions, 793 yards and 10 total touchdowns. Reed joined the likes of Sterling Sharpe, James Lofton, Billy Howton and Don Hutson as the only rookies to lead the team in receiving yards. He also smashed Sharpe’s franchise rookie record for receptions.
Among NFL rookies with at least 24 catches, Wicks was second with 14.9 yards per catch and fourth with 18 explosive catches (a reception of 16-plus yards). During his final two regular-season games and the wild-card win at Dallas, he scored four touchdowns.
“It boosts confidence a lot,” Wicks said. “You’ve got to be confident to go out and play good. Building it from last year, it’s way better because now I can go out and have that chip that I’ve always had. Playing faster, that’s when I’m at my best.”
According to Pro Football Focus, among the 20 rookie receivers who were targeted at least 20 times last season, Reed was second in passer rating while targeted (123.1) and Wicks was third (117.6) behind the Chiefs’ Rashee Rice (124.9). Reed was fourth in yards per route (2.05) and Wicks was fifth (2.04).
With Green Bay’s hot finish to the season, expectations are high entering 2024. Reed and Wicks are ready to do their part.
“I don’t think they ever changed. Our goal was to get to a Super Bowl last year, and the same thing is here this year,” Reed said. “Nothing’s changed, you know? Locker room may change a little bit, but we still got the same high standards here in this locker room and in this building. So, the standards never change.
“We’re not in this to just win eight games and call it a season or win nine games and just get to the playoffs. We’re here to take it all, so that’s our goal.”
