I think that #3 above, FLACBOX does what you want. I am looking for the same: play my folder tree as organized and not create a database of music files to play from, which scrambles files because those digitized from vinyl and tape and some very old CD’s don’t have the metadata needed to place the files in order in folders in correct order.

You may also want to try NikooPlayer. It’s stereo EQ and 3D effects are unique.

How to set a preferred music service with Siri on iPhone and iPad

When Apple released iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5, it included the ability to let you set a preferred music service with Siri. There was originally a misunderstanding on if this was a way to set a default app like you can with a web browser, but Apple clarified that is not the case.

There is no actual way to choose a specific music service for every occasion. Instead, this feature just uses Siri intelligence to learn your listening habits and give you better recommendations over time.

With this feature, Siri on your best iPhone will occasionally ask you what service you want to use. This allows Siri to learn your preferences for all audio content, rather than just music. For example, you'll be able to tell Siri to open podcasts specifically in the Podcasts app or a third-party app of your choice, like Overcast.

Now, the feature has been included in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 . But remember, you need to be running at least iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5 in order to set a preferred music service with Siri, so that's something to keep in mind if you're using an older device.

• Access Siri by saying, "Hey, Siri" or hold down the side/power button .
• Ask Siri to play some music, like "Hey Siri, play The Beatles."
• Siri will bring up a list of all of the music apps that you have installed and ask you, "Which app do you want to listen to this on?"
• Select your preferred app from the list.
• If prompted to do so, confirm that Siri can access data from your chosen music app.
• Siri will now play the music in your chosen app of choice.

Want to set default apps?

So while this isn't the same as setting a default app for all music or podcasts, it's still a step in the right direction. Now when you ask Siri to play your music, she will learn which streaming service you prefer and stick with that for that specific audio type.

Of course, you can set default apps for your browser and mail app which can be super handy if you, like many people, don't Apple's own Mail app or Safari. Maybe one day we can change the default music player too.

iOS 16 's biggest new features and upgrades are highlighted by an overhauled iPhone Lock Screen, and that includes a full-screen music player and mini visualizer. With iOS 16, multiple Lock Screens can be saved on an iPhone and linked to a Home Screen, and it's easier than ever to swap them out . Holding down the Lock Screen will bring up a fresh user-interface to change Lock Screens, and swiping left and right will show saved wallpapers. The Lock Screen also brings additional customization options, such as the ability to change the clock font and add widgets.

To enable the full screen music player on an iPhone 's Lock Screen, begin by playing music (or any media) on a streaming service of choice, such as Spotify or Apple Music. After the music starts playing, lock the device by pressing the power button, and then wake the screen by tapping it. Tap on the album art in the top left corner of the Now Playing widget . The album art will expand, and the full-screen player will be opened. To close the full-screen player, simply tap the album art again.

How The Full Screen Music Player Works

When the full-screen music player is enabled on the Lock Screen, the album art fills the empty space and serves as a placeholder for the iPhone's Lock Screen wallpaper. Any changes to the Lock Screen's clock font will remain, but widgets and wallpapers will disappear when the full-screen music player is opened. Like the native Music app, the area surrounding the album art is filled with a gradient that is color-matched to the cover of the album or song. There is no way to permanently set an album cover as an iPhone wallpaper all the time. Instead, music must be playing in order to have full-screen album art as the device's wallpaper.

The full-screen player works best when there are no new notifications visible on the Lock Screen. In addition to the full-screen player, a mini visualizer has been added in the top left corner of the Now Playing widget. To access this, swipe down from the top-left corner of the iPhone lock screen. Tap the Now Playing widget to view the mini visualizer, which offers all the options of the Lock Screen Music player, including playback control buttons and album art. To close the widget , tap on the empty space surrounding it. Tapping on the album art of the mini visualizer will open the app where the song is being played.

Get Rid Of Now Playing On iPhone Lock Screen

Unlike iPhone notifications, swiping to the left on the music player on the Lock Screen, whether in the full screen or minimized mode, doesn't close it. This can be frustrating, as swiping on the Now Playing widget can cause it to start playing music and sometimes even change tracks. To get rid of Now Playing from the Lock Screen, users will need to close the app where the music (or video) is playing. Depending on the app, this might be YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, Apple Music, etc.

To close the app, unlock the iPhone, then swipe up and hold from the bottom of the screen to view recent apps. Close the app playing the media by swiping up on the preview card. Once done, the Now Playing widget should disappear from the iPhone Lock Screen. In the rare cases when this doesn't work, users might need to restart their iPhones by pressing and holding the power button and volume up button simultaneously, and then swiping on the Power Off slider. Press and hold the iPhone power button to restart, and the Now Playing widget should disappear from the Lock Screen.

Long press on your lock screen and tap on your Focus profile at the bottom. Tap on your linked profile to unlink it from the lock screen.

6. Force Restart iPhone

Restarting your iPhone is a classic troubleshooting tip that can help you fix a majority of issues. A force restart should clear all cache files and give all your apps and background services a fresh start.

Press and release the Volume Up button , then press and release the Volume Down button . Then, press and hold the Power button until the Apple logo appears. 

Wait for your iPhone to reboot and see if the lock screen music player works.

Play Any Webpage’s Audio In the Background Using Safari in iOS 10

If you are running iOS 10 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, then you can play any audio or video (including Youtube) on Safari and keep its sound playing in the background even when you exit the app. To do so all you need to do is open any audio or video streaming webpage and play the song, audio clip or video. Once it starts playing you can simply click the home button and return to the homescreen. When you are on the homescreen the audio will be playing the background while you will be able to launch any app and use it while listening to it. You can even lock your device without worrying about the audio stopping.

There’s a minor difference when it comes to playing video’s sound in the background than an audio clip. The audio clip will automatically keep on playing when you exit Safari. However in the case of a video the sound will stop. To start it you have to pull up the Control Center and then slide to access the music player screen. There you simply have to tap on the play button and the audio will start playing. You can then go on and open any app and keep enjoying the audio from that video.

This is  not a new trick and has been around since the days of iOS 9 and perhaps before that. It is good to see we can still do it in iOS 10.

How to Enable Safari Web Browser Audio on Your iPhone?

Are you having trouble getting audio to auto-play on your iPhone when using Safari? If so, you’re not alone! Many iPhone users have run into this issue. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to get audio to auto-play on Safari for iPhone.

First, open the Safari menu and select Settings for This Website. Then change the Auto-Play setting from Never Auto-Play or Stop Media with Sound to Allow All Auto-Play. Once that’s done, click away from the settings window to dismiss it and refresh the test window if necessary to reload the question and allow audio to play automatically.

On iPhones and iPads, it is not possible to mute a tab in Safari. Instead, only the open tab in the foreground can play sound. To mute this sound, you can either pause or mute using the website’s video or audio player controls or simply close the tab or mute your device.

On iPhone or iPad, it is not possible to mute a tab in Safari. The only option for muting sound is to pause or mute using the website’s video or audio player controls, or simply close the tab or mute your device.

Safari won't play embedded wav files

I was looking at a web page https://google-research.github.io/noise2music/ which has embedded wav files. When I try to play them on my iMac running 13.2 or my iPhone X running ios 16.1.2 using the Safari browser, clicking on play indicates that it's playing, but no sound comes out. However, when I go to the same web page using Firefox on my iMac it works as expected. Is there some setting that I need to make in order for this to work in Safari? It doesn't work on Firefox on my iPhone either.

Am no expert, yet it seems the answer is No. It is not uncommon for web-sites to be browser-specific.

Eg: .wav files would generally need to be converted for them to play on Mac. However embedded .wav files require a browser, unless they can be downloaded / converted.

Seems the web-page article was prepared mainly for Windows computers / browsers.

Perhaps the article-creators did not have the know-how to prepare and code it for all browsers, or did not have the time or energy to devote to doing so,

Apparently .wav files were created early on by Microsoft to play on Windows media player, and there is now a newer Microsoft format .wmv. Many cross-platform media players will play .wav files and a variety of other file formats.

Apple has used .iaff .8svx and .mp3 file formats, and seems to no longer support the older .wav format that earlier versions of QuickTime (eg QuickTime 7) did play.

7 ‘Useless’ iPhone Apps That Are Hogging Storage On Your Phone, According To Experts: Podcasts & More

Y ou might expect that some of the more resource-intensive apps on your device are naturally going to take up storage space. But if they are giving to you in the form of convenience or entertainment, you might not even mind this fact of life — you may accept it as part of the deal.

But when an app is more or less “useless,” which we’ll define here as one that isn’t giving back to you but is still taking, taking, taking, the imbalance becomes more evident.  And if at any point that imbalance results in you receiving annoying pop-ups about how you are out of storage space (and now have to scramble to free up space), your impetus to delete useless apps sooner may become even stronger.

You can start with these seven useless apps that are hogging up your storage space.

If you use the Podcasts app, you won’t consider it useless — you may consider it one of your favorites, in fact. But if you used the app once and never listen to podcasts again and this app is on your phone collecting podcasts that you don’t listen to, all of those podcasts are using up storage space. Delete the app to conserve space.

When was the last time you played Angry Birds? If the answer is in the form of a year that’s not in this decade, delete it. The games you never play are likely running on old software that hasn’t been updated. This not only hogs up your storage but can put you at greater risk for bugs.

Music Streaming Apps

Like podcasts, apps that stream music for you collect a lot of data and files. These files take up storage space. This is all fine and good if you listen to them frequently and it may be worth the trade-off, but if you have several apps for music, consider deleting a few you rarely use to conserve space.

Video-Streaming Apps

We are lumping a number of different apps under the banner “video-streaming apps,” because we don’t want to single out Netflix or Hulu as worse than any of the rest. The point is that apps that stream video content are taking up your storage. You can handle this in one of two ways: cut down on the number of these apps that you use or be diligent about deleting files after you’ve enjoyed watching them.

Social Media

There’s no way around this one: social media apps take up storage space. Some are worse than others, and if you’re looking for ways to improve your space, deleting Instagram can be one of the most helpful. Of course, if you’re like so many IG users who thinks this is a drastic measure, another way to help conserve space is by deleting duplicate photos and changing the settings in Instagram so that you aren’t saving copies of everything that you post.

You aren’t going to delete your Safari browser — nor is that a suggestion we’d made. But you can free up storage space by being mindful about how Safari takes up space. It’s important to periodically go into Safari and clear your history and data to free up storage space.

Your Photos app is likely the source of most of your storage woes. And the best way to handle this is by setting up iCloud and saving the photos and videos you plan on keeping for the long haul to the Cloud. Make a few difficult choices about which photos and videos can be deleted, and consider changing your settings in Photos so that deleted photos are permanently deleted after 30 days.

iOS 17.5 Is Available Now, but Don't Miss These iOS 17.4 Features

The update brought things like new emoji and more Stolen Device Protection options to your iPhone.

Apple released  iOS 17.5 to the general public on Monday, but don't forget to check out all the new features the tech giant included in  iOS 17.4 . That update was released almost two months ago on March 5 and it brought major changes for people in the European Union ,  new emoji  and  important bug fixes  to your iPhone. Apple later released iOS 17.4.1 on March 21, which patched a couple of zero-day vulnerabilities on your iPhone but didn't include any new features.

Downloading other app stores in the EU

Apple introduced a significant change to Safari, the App Store and iOS with iOS 17.4, but only for people in Europe. With iOS 17.4, people in the EU can download an alternative app store and apps from outside the App Store. As CNET's Katie Collins reports , this marks one of the largest changes to the App Store since its inception in 2008. People in the EU will also be given new default app controls, giving them more ways to customize their iPhone experience. 

People in the EU have access to other app stores and more now.

Apple made these changes , announced in January, to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act.

More options for in-app payments

Apple introduced more ways to make in-app payments with iOS 17.4. If you go to Settings > Privacy & Security , you'll see an option called Contactless & NFC , or near-field communication . If you tap the new option, you'll be taken to a mostly blank page that has a small disclaimer that says the page will show apps that have requested the ability to use contactless and NFC payments in the future. Apple announced these options alongside the changes for people in the EU, and there's no word on whether this will be used by apps outside that region.

At least 100 new emoji

Some of the new emoji in iOS 17.4 include a phoenix, a slice of lime and broken chains.

Apple introduced over 100 new emoji to iPhone users with iOS 17.4. Those emoji include heads shaking up and down or left and right, a phoenix and a slice of lime. These emoji were announced in 2023, and some Android devices, including the latest Samsung phones , already have them.

Improved iMessage security against future threats

With iOS 17.4, your iMessage chats get a security boost to protect them from cyberattacks that involve quantum computing. According to CNET's David Lumb , Apple said it hasn't seen these kinds of cyberattacks yet, but the company wants to get ahead of the potential threat now.

Podcasts can now show transcripts

You can now read a transcript of your favorite podcasts with iOS 17.4.

In iOS 17.4, you can read the transcripts of your favorite podcasts as you listen to them. To see the transcripts, go into the Podcasts app and start listening to a show, then tap the media player across the bottom of your screen. There's a new button in the bottom left corner of your screen that looks like a speech bubble with quotes inside it. Tap this button and you'll see the transcript of the show you're listening to.

You can search within the transcript, too, so if someone mentions a book or movie title and you only remember part of it, you can search the part you do know and find the whole title.

Virtual card numbers come to Apple Cash

Your Apple Cash  gets an upgrade with iOS 17.4, too. Now you can view  virtual card numbers for your Apple Cash which lets you shop at online stores that don't accept Apple Pay. This card comes with its own number, expiration date and three-digit security code, like a physical card. You can also easily request a new card number if you think your card has been compromised.

Another digital clock widget

In iOS 17.4, Apple introduced a new digital clock app widget called City Digital. This widget displays the time as well as a set location as opposed to wherever your iPhone is at the moment. This can be helpful if you're traveling or live far from family and friends but want to keep in touch without waking them up in the middle of the night.

More Stolen Device Protection options

Stolen Device Protection now lets you always require a security delay, or only when you're away from locations like your home.

Apple introduced a few new options in  Stolen Device Protection  with iOS 17.4. The new options let you choose whether you want to always require a 1-hour security delay to access certain settings or make changes, or to only require the delay when you're away from a familiar location like your home. 

Apple introduced Stolen Device Protection with iOS 17.3 with the intent to protect some of your data if your device is stolen or falls into nefarious hands. The feature doesn't protect all your data, but Apple still recommends everyone turn it on.

New Battery Health readout for iPhone 15 models

With iOS 17.4,  iPhone 15 models  get a new  Battery Health  readout. If you go to  Settings > Battery, you'll see a new option that tells you the status of your battery's health in a word, like Normal or Service. You can also tap this option for more details about your battery, like its cycle count and maximum capacity. Before, your iPhone would show a percentage correlating to your battery's health without any indication of what it means.

New Home button in the Music and Books apps

Apple introduced a Home button in Apple Music and the Books app with iOS 17.4. If you open either app and look at the bottom of your screen, the Home button is in the far-left corner. This button replaced Listen Now in Apple Music and Read Now in Books. 

If you're an Apple Music subscriber and tap the button, you're taken to a page that shows you menus, like Recently Played, and recommendations based on artists you've listened to. If you tap this button in the Books app, you see menus like Current Bestsellers and Start Reading for Free.

Previous iOS updates brought Home buttons to the Podcasts and Apple TV apps, so this change is likely Apple trying to apply some uniformity across its apps.

Siri can read messages in multiple languages

In iOS 17.4, Apple gave Siri the ability to read messages in multiple languages . Once enabled, Siri can read messages in languages like Spanish, dialects of Mandarin and Thai. Apple writes that this won't change the primary language Siri listens and responds in.

New Apple CarPlay and Maps experience in certain vehicles

Certain Apple CarPlay-supported vehicles will show a new Maps instrument cluster with iOS 17.4.

With iOS 17.4, if you use Apple CarPlay with Maps in certain supported vehicles, you'll see a new instrument cluster. 

"With supported CarPlay vehicles, Apple Maps will present a new instrument cluster experience with information about upcoming maneuvers," Apple wrote online . "Users will be able to swap the desired display type between the main and instrument cluster screen by tapping the map configuration button on the upper right of the Maps main screen."

Apple didn't say which vehicles support this new feature, and the company didn't respond to a request for comment.

Apple Cash virtual card numbers enable you to pay with Apple Cash at merchants that don't yet accept Apple Pay by typing in your number from Wallet or using Safari AutoFill. Fixes an issue where contact pictures are blank in Find My. Fixes an issue for Dual SIM users where the phone number changes from primary to secondary and is visible to a group they have messaged. New Music & audio enhancements plus a mysterious 'Passthrough' feature are coming at WWDC

Apple's Music app will receive two new audio features

People familiar with Apple's pre-release operating systems have revealed to AppleInsider new details on improvements currently in the works. Though on-device AI remains the primary focus of Apple's upcoming software releases, the company is also working on audio-related features for its system applications.

Apple's current iteration of the Music app already has a crossfade option. Pre-release versions of the application in internal testing contain an improved version of the feature, known for now as "smart song transitions."

With the standard crossfade option, the Music app will gradually decrease the volume of the song currently playing, as it begins to draw closer to its end. Simultaneously, the app will begin playing a new song, while slowly raising the volume — thus creating a transition between the two songs.

Smart Song Transitions will take this feature even further, by giving users the option to adjust the duration of the crossfade effect. Song transitions can be made to last anywhere from one to twelve seconds, depending on personal preference.

The existing crossfade option will remain present within Apple's Music app, as will the option to disable the feature. Overall, this is only one of a few audio-related updates Apple has planned for its system applications.

Audio Passthrough for Apple Music and QuickTime Player

The Music app will also introduce support for a feature dubbed "Passthrough," which will only be available on supported hardware. What that supported hardware is, remains unclear at this time.

Although the details surrounding this feature are also unclear, it appears to be related to Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, with it possibly being a rebrand of the feature.

Apple has renamed different OS features and applications over the years, with iCal eventually becoming Calendar, and System Preferences being changed to System Settings with macOS Ventura .

The company also plans to rename its user accounts from Apple ID to Apple Account, starting with iOS 18 . Features can even receive a new name mid-development, as was the case with Vocal Shortcuts - originally known as Adaptive Voice Shortcuts .

Renaming Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos to the simple "Passthrough" would seemingly fit this pattern, while also allowing for a significantly shorter name. Ultimately, though, we don't yet have a great deal of information about the feature as it exists now.

Unlike Spatial Audio, however, the Passthrough feature will apparently be available without an Apple Music Subscription, meaning it will likely be accessible to everyone. Passthrough is also set to make its way to QuickTime on macOS 15 , indicating that Apple intends to make it available system-wide.

New audio features for gaming and spatial computing

Apple is also working on other audio-related improvements, focusing on audio accessories like headphones and headsets. We could see enhancements with a particular emphasis on gaming.

The company is working on more advanced versions of hands-free audio control for gaming, along with a feature known internally as "Spatial Gaming." Although there are no concrete details about the exact implementation of these features - they align with Apple's overall interest in spatial computing.

Over the years, Apple has introduced features such as Spatial Audio, which allows for an immersive audio experience by making different sounds originate from individual speakers. On Apple's AirPods , this feature is combined with dynamic head tracking to deliver surround sound and 3D audio through the headphones.

More recently, in late 2023, the company released Spatial Video, which can be recorded with the iPhone 15 Pro and viewed with the Apple Vision Pro headset. Spatial Videos are essentially three-dimensional video recordings, which allow users to relive moments and experiences.

Both Spatial Audio and Spatial Video require specialized hardware to function, as is the case with the Passthrough feature.

Passthrough and Smart Song Transitions will likely make their debut at Apple's Worldwide Developers' Conference on June 10, as part of the company's next generation of operating systems — iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15 , and more.

I’m not sure why this article lists “Passthrough” as “mysterious.” The word Passthrough has a literal meaning in audio, and it’s a feature in other competing music player apps. It just means to pass the audio signal through with no modifications whatsoever. This is useful for delivering the highest quality audio possible to your DAC, or passing along an encoded signal to a downstream decoder. 

What? That makes absolutely no sense. Yes, Apple has changed the names of various features over the years, but the new moniker made sense as a descriptor for the feature in question. "Passthrough" is in no way descriptive of spatial audio. You might come up with better speculative ideas if you looked up the definition of the term, particularly in relation to electronics and audio: " In signal processing, a passthrough is a logic gate that enables a signal to 'pass through' unaltered, sometimes with little alteration. Sometimes the concept of a 'passthrough' can also involve daisy chain logic."  This definition is from the Apple's own "lookup" feature. Setting aside the mildly amusing redundant phrase about alteration, this definition suggests that the feature will perhaps involve transmitting or transferring audio signals without degrading it by running it through some sort of compression codec. Perhaps they're devising a way to get spatial and lossless audio to wireless AirPods without squeezing it through Bluetooth.

What has been sorely missing in iOS/iPadOS from the beginning is system wide audio management. I hope this is addressed.

I always hated fadeouts on songs; seems like artists just couldn’t figure out how to end it. Maybe it’s due to chiefly listening to punk rock and thrash medal, but I shan’t use crossfade or Smart Song Transitions.

iOS 18 Apple Music App to Get Smarter Song Transitions

With iOS 18 and macOS 15 , the Apple Music app will gain smarter song transitions, reports AppleInsider . Apple is reportedly testing a new feature called "smart song transitions" that would be an improvement to the current crossfade option that comes into play when transitioning from one song to the next.

AppleInsider says that Apple is also working on a new feature called "Passthrough" for ‌Apple Music‌ and QuickTime Player, but there is no information on what this feature is. The site suggests that it is related to Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos.

Similarly, Apple is said to be working on a "Spatial Gaming" feature internally, but there are also no details on what this might be.

‌iOS 18‌ is set to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference that will kick off on Monday, June 10.

Apple Shortcuts and ChatGPT for Mac

OpenAI recently launched their official ChatGPT app for the Mac (before Windows). The macOS app brings most of the functionality from the iPhone version to the desktop — no web browser needed.

Option + Space

Hands-down, the best function of the Mac app is instant ChatGPT access from anywhere with a simple keyboard shortcut. Option + Space is the default, or you can assign your own. Before ChatGPT came to the Mac, I kept a Safari tab pinned to OpenAI’s website. Since I spend the majority of my work week on the Mac, my ChatGPT usage has skyrocketed beyond a few times a day to dozens of instances throughout the day.

Anyway, today I realized that the same Shortcuts supported by ChatGPT on iOS also work with ChatGPT on macOS! In my case, they synced over and just worked. You can also set them up from Shortcuts on the Mac. (Create a new shortcut, select ChatGPT from apps, and add which action you’d like to assign.)

ChatGPT offers two shortcuts: Ask ChatGPT , and Start voice conversation with ChatGPT .

Using the iPhone, I’ve used Ask ChatGPT as a lock screen launcher and occasionally assigned Start voice conversation with ChatGPT to the Action button on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. (I primarily use the Action button to launch Camera. It can get awkward when I forget I changed it, go to take a photo, and ChatGPT opens a voice conversation…)

The system-wide keyboard shortcut fulfills my need for Ask ChatGPT . I’m sure more savvy Shortcuts users could cook up some useful versions of it. It’s the Start voice conversation with ChatGPT action that I think has potential on the Mac. See below:

The only tweak I needed for the Mac is to include it in the menu bar folder and assign Control + Space as the keyboard shortcut to run the action. You can also add an icon to the Dock for initiating a voice conversation. The shortcut even works when the ChatGPT Mac app is closed.

Assistant to the voice assistant

People have already been using ChatGPT voice on iOS to create a generative AI version of Siri. Having this same capability on the Mac enhances voice assistant features on the desktop too. I’ll have to spend more time with it before I determine whether or not actually using ChatGPT voice on the Mac is a good fit, but I think it has potential.

Of course, Siri itself will hopefully learn a thing or two with OpenAI’s help in iOS 18 and macOS 15. We’ll find out for sure on June 10 when Apple unveils its upcoming software improvements.

Oh, and lastly, there’s another way to use ChatGPT and Shortcuts. It turns out ChatGPT is pretty good at giving you step-by-step instructions for how to make a shortcut based on what you’re trying to do. Now imagine a world where Siri and the Shortcuts app itself uses generative AI to integrate that sort of feature directly and with more system access.

Note that OpenAI is still in the process of rolling out its Mac app to all users.
