Indian passport holders can now travel to these 57 countries visa free

By Saloni Dhruv

India has significantly improved its passport ranking

If you hold an Indian passport, planning your next holiday abroad just got easier. According to the Henley Passport Index, India has stepped up and significantly improved its passport ranking by five points from last year, settling on the 80th spot. Thanks to this, Indian citizens can now travel to 57 destinations completely visa-free or with visa-on-arrival access.

Although countries like Indonesia, Rwanda, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe are included in this list, places like China, Japan, Russia, and the United States of America are among the 177 countries that do not fall under this list and would still require you to go through the tedious process of visa applications to visit these places.

The Henley Passport Index was invented nearly 20 years ago by Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, the chairman at Henley & Partners. The index is based on exclusive and official data from the International Air Transport Association and provides a ranking of all the passports according to the number of destinations their holders can visit without a prior visa.

The country that knocked Japan from the first position for having the most powerful passport is Singapore, allowing visa-free entry to 192 global destinations. After consistently being on top for five years, Japan dropped to third place in the Henley Passport Index as the number of destinations its passport can access without a visa fell in the ranks.

Meanwhile, the second spot is shared by Germany, Portugal and Spain. Austria, Finland, France, South Korea, Sweden and Luxembourg stand alongside Japan at the third position, while the United Kingdom, despite its ongoing Brexit situation, jumped up to fourth place. On the other hand, the United States of America slid down two places to the eighth position. India’s 80th position is currently tied with countries like Togo and Senegal.

Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, Syria, and Iraq land at the bottom of the list, with easy access to no more than 35 countries.

If you hold an Indian passport, then you have easy entry to these 57 countries : Barbados, Bhutan, Bolivia, British Virgin Islands, Burundi, Cambodia, Cape Verde Islands, Comoro Islands, Djibouti, Dominica, El Salvador, Fiji, Gabon, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Indonesia, Iran, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Macao (SAR China), Madagascar, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Mauritius, Micronesia, Montserrat, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niue, Oman, Palau Islands, Qatar, Rwanda, Samoa , Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and lastly, Zimbabwe.

indian passport can travel

If you hold an Indian passport, which countries can you travel to now?

If you have an indian passport, there are a few countries you can travel to currently including russia, egypt and south africa..

Listen to Story

If you hold an Indian passport, which countries can you travel to now?

Summer getaway plans? Well, your choice this season is limited to Russia, some of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) like Ukraine, Egypt and South Africa, possibly. These are some of the countries that have kept their doors open for Indian tourists, with minimal travel restrictions.

The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in India has brought a host of flight bans to foreign countries. These include preferred holiday destinations such as the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Europe, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Thailand and Sri Lanka among others.

Countries that had recently relaxed tourist visa rules for Indians including the Maldives, Nepal and the UAE, have put a ban again on Indian holidaymakers for the time-being.

"There was some hope with countries like the Maldives, Dubai, Seychelles and Nepal opening up for Indian tourists briefly. But now we are badly hit again. Flights aren't operating and countries aren't even issuing e-visas," Rajiv Mehra, President of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), said.

IATO estimates that the inbound tourism industry has suffered almost Rs 2 lakh crore directly in losses over the last financial year till March 31, 2021. The indirect loss value is pegged at almost Rs 6 lakh crore.

As for outbound, the industry estimates losses to the tune of 15 lakh crore to the economy.

"As a first step, those vaccinated or those carrying 'vaccine passports' should be allowed to travel," said Subhash Goyal, Chairman, STIC Travel.

In reference to Bharat Biotech's Covaxin that is yet to receive World Health Organisation clearance, Goyal noted that countries dependent on Indian tourists like the UAE will have to give their nod, especially since they earlier allowed entry simply on the basis of negative RT-PCR test reports.

Tourism industry leaders have asked the Centre to hurry up the necessary approval from WHO. Similarly, they've asked the government to clear the way for vaccinated foreigners to arrive in India and not insist on negative RT-PCR reports.

Speaking of inbound tourism, Subhash Goyal said, "2021 has been completely washed out. We hope if the situation keeps improving, then foreign tourists should start arriving from January next year, unless of course, there is a third wave. Ultimately, we will have to learn to live with this disease."

(An earlier version of the story had Seychelles among the countries listed above. On Monday, the Seychelles Tourism Board in India clarified that the country has now removed India from the list of countries from where tourists are allowed to visit. The story has since been updated.)

This European country is the best Schengen alternative for Indian passport holders; know all details

G eorgia, straddling both Europe and Asia, offers a unique experience distinct from both continents. This former Soviet republic is both a revelation and a mystery to travellers opting to explore beyond Europe or Southeast Asia. Indian passport holders can enter Georgia visa-free if they possess a valid Schengen or Japan visa. For others, an e-visa can be obtained through the Georgian Government’s immigration portal.

The e-visa application process, although seemingly straightforward, requires patience due to frequent errors at the payment gateway stage. After overcoming the initial application hurdle, applicants need to dedicate sufficient time for the visa to process, considering the high rejection rate of 72%. Applicants usually receive a revert within five working days, and in case of rejection, a new application can be started within ten days.

You can also book a low-cost airline that offers direct flights from Delhi to Tbilisi three times a week. Upon landing at Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi International Airport, Indian travellers may feel apprehensive given reports of seemingly arbitrary deportations of Indians. However, passing through immigration with a Schengen or Japan visa generally ensures a smooth journey.

Once out of the airport, the crisp Tbilisi air greets travellers, with temperatures markedly cooler than in Delhi. The city centre is only a 25 min drive from the airport and is easily accessible. Tbilisi is known for its hilly landscapes, historic old town, and key landmarks such as the Freedom Square and Shota Rustaveli Avenue.

Throughout Tbilisi, travellers encounter warm, hospitable locals. A short drive from the capital leads to the Jvari Monastery, situated atop the 653 m Jvari mount. From here, visitors can view the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers and overlook Mtskheta, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Iberia.

In Georgia, wine holds a significant cultural and historical value. The Kakheti region houses ancient vineyards and is recognized as the birthplace of winemaking, with early evidence dating back 8,000 years. The qvevri, an earthen pot used to store wine underground, was invented here, maintaining the wine's flavour unlike previous storage methods in animal-leather cases.

Other notable destinations in Georgia include Kutaisi, the ski resort Mestia, the 'City of Love' Sighnaghi, the renowned wine region Kakheti, and Mtskheta. The Georgian Military Highway offers a picturesque route through Kazbegi National Park, showcasing the Caucasus Mountains’ beauty.

For Indian travellers, Georgia requires an e-visa unless holding a US, UK, Schengen, or Japan visa for visa-free entry. E-visa applications take five days to process, and due to high rejection rates, ample time should be allocated for potential reapplications. Each application costs 20 USD plus a service fee.

May to June and September to October are ideal months to visit Georgia, avoiding extreme summer heat and winter cold.

Delhi Airport becomes first in India to launch Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Programme

Travel & tourism.

Facility aims to expedited emigration/immigration clearance for pre-verified travellers

immigration Indira Gandhi Airport

New Delhi: Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi became the first airport in India to introduce the government's 'Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP)' for Indian passport holders and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the programme by unveiling dedicated counters at Terminal 3 of Delhi Airport for Trusted Traveller Programme beneficiaries.

The FTI-TTP is designed to provide Indian nationals and OCI cardholders with a faster, easier, and more secure travel experience. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to enhancing travel convenience and efficiency for all.

  • Eid travel: UAE residents booking in advance better off as airfares surge 100% and more

To join the programme, eligible individuals must apply online. The registration process for FTI-TTP may take up to one month. Applicants must ensure their passport has at least six months of validity at the time of application.

Membership in the programme will be co-terminus with passport validity. The application process requires applicants to submit their biometrics (fingerprints and facial image) along with other required information as specified in the application form. Registration under FTI-TTP will be completed after necessary verifications and confirmation of eligibility.

This first-of-its-kind facility aims to significantly reduce congestion at airports by offering expedited emigration/immigration clearance for pre-verified travellers, both arriving and departing.

Delhi Airport's Terminal 3 is equipped with eight electronic gates - four for arrivals and four for departures--to facilitate a seamless experience for programme participants. The number of counters may increase based on demand.

"We at DIAL are very proud to join hands with the Government of India for launching the FTI-Trusted Traveller Programme at Delhi Airport. This programme will offer a world-class and seamless travel experience to all international passengers opting for this facility. The Trusted Traveller Programme allows Indian passport holders and OCI Cardholders to utilise these e-gates, bypass regular emigration/immigration queues, and enjoy a smoother journey. This technology-driven initiative is designed to make the emigration/immigration clearance process faster and simpler," said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL.

Similar to the Global Entry Program offered by the United States Department of Homeland Security, the Trusted Traveller Programme allows pre-approved, low-risk travellers to benefit from expedited immigration and security clearance upon arrival.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Bureau of Immigration, has developed the roadmap for the FTI-Trusted Traveller Programme.
