4 days on board the Indian Pacific train

Day 1: Sydney to outback New South Wales

Afternoon Board at Sydney 's  Central Station  and settle into your cabin, where you'll spend the afternoon taking in the scenery as it transforms from skyscrapers and traffic lights to the forested valleys and sandstone cliffs of the stunning  Blue Mountains . Your on-board radio includes an audio commentary option.

The journey's eastbound service (Perth to Sydney) includes an off-train excursion in the majestic Blue Mountains , which includes visits to the majestic Three Sisters at Echo Point and the spectacular Jamison Valley.

Evening As the sun sets behind mountain ranges you will begin to enter the more arid regions of New South Wales , characterised by hardy mulga (a small native Australian tree) and vast plains. After dinner in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant , meet fellow guests in the  Outback Explorer Lounge  for a welcome drink.

Day 2: Broken Hill to Adelaide

Indian Pacific, outback SA © Journey Beyond

Indian Pacific, outback South Australia © Journey Beyond

Morning The day begins in  Broken Hill , formerly a booming mining town, which has inspired an array of artists over the years with its distinctive desert landscape. On a one-hour walking tour, explore the city's iconic  Living Desert Sculptures  then visit the  Pro Hart Gallery,  where you'll learn all about one of Australia's most celebrated artists, whose works capture the spirit of the outback.

Afternoon After an onboard lunch, the journey continues into the green and golden fields of South Australia 's food bowl. You have a choice between several off-train excursions. You can opt to spend the afternoon and evening in the picturesque  Barossa Valley  or McLaren Vale wine region, the charming heritage town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills or a private guided tour of the South Australian Museum . All tours include drinks and dinner. Afterwards, all guests rejoin the train in Adelaide to begin the journey across the Nullarbor Plain.

On the eastbound service, which includes a morning stop in Adelaide , your excursion options include an Adelaide city sights coach tour, a progressive breakfast at the famous Adelaide Central Markets , a guided tour of Adelaide Oval or a city and river precinct walking tour.

Day 3: Nullarbor Plain to Rawlinna

Morning You’ll be greeted at sunrise by the striking, raw beauty of the Nullarbor. Taking its name from the Latin for "no trees", this vast outback plain has bewildered and inspired generations of Australians and visitors alike. A seemingly endless expanse of rusty earth and hardy outback shrubs, the Nullarbor covers 200,000 square kilometres (77,000 square miles) of South Australia and Western Australia and is considered a "bucket list"' experience.

Afternoon Having entered Western Australia , celebrate crossing Australia's most famous plain with a special dinner in the remote outpost of Rawlinna. Here, guests are invited to disembark and partake in a traditional long-table dinner under the bright stars of the outback sky (seasonal). Surrounded by nothing but vast sheep stations (the nearest town, Kalgoorlie , is more than 400 kilometres, or 250 miles away), this is one alfresco dining experience to remember.

The Indian Pacific eastbound service (Perth to Sydney) offers an additional excursion in the wild west gold rush town of Kalgoorlie.

Day 4: Outback Western Australia to Perth

Indian Pacific, Adelaide, SA © Journey Beyond

Indian Pacific, Adelaide, South Australia © Journey Beyond

Morning The scenery transforms again as the Indian Pacific continues through the picturesque  Avon Valley , a patchwork of rolling hills and winding streams. After passing fertile farmland and the occasional hot air balloon, the journey nears the end as Perth's outer city limits come into view.

Afternoon When the Indian Pacific arrives in the west after its epic transcontinental crossing, you have the choice to be transferred directly to your accommodation or to take an optional upgrade tour to explore Perth . On the Perth tour, you'll admire magnificent city views from Kings Park , travel along the Swan River and picturesque foreshore parklands, see Subiaco with its trendy boutiques and restaurants, and Claremont with its upmarket shopping and famous 'Millionaire's Row.' You'll also enjoy city landmarks like the WACA Cricket Ground , Town Hall, Perth Mint , Parliament House, Crown Casino and Barracks Arch .

Perth provides seamless transport options to access beautiful Rottnest Island and its adorable quokkas, the groovy culture and art scene of portside Fremantle , the vineyards of the Swan Valley and charming Cottesloe Beach where you can enjoy a swim in the Indian Ocean. To enjoy the rich heritage of Perth, visit Barrack Square to see The Bell Tower, Perth Mint, the WA Maritime Museum and roam the winding streets of Fremantle before touring its World Heritage-listed prison .

You can take the transcontinental trip from Sydney to Perth and see the entirety of landscape of Australia. However, if you are pressed for time or would just like the option of a shorter trip, there are three separate itineraries in which to choose.

Sydney to Adelaide

Travel through beautiful rock formations, the infamous outback and the hauntingly beautiful Blue Mountains in a two day and one night journey. Take the option of off-the-train experiences such as Broken Hill’s Gem mining town and expand on your trip’s potential to fulfill your dreams.

Sydney to Perth

In four days and three nights, this transcontinental journey will take you on the path of a pioneer. Through the bush, the goldfields, the coast, ghost towns and wineries, you will be on your own personal trek to explore the vast expanse that is the entirety of the continent. Nine meals are included in the journey, but take advantage of the stops that are planned and learn more about the culture of each city through its food, music and history.

Adelaide to Perth

For those enthused by the outback and spending time in it, coupled with the best foodie element in train travel, this three day and two night excursion is perfect. Stop and have a dinner under the desert stars, see a sheep station and how farmers live and thrive in the environment.

All trip packages include boarding, meals, wine and excursions along with the best company a traveler could ask for. There are also optional excursions for an additional fee available should you choose to add on an adventure.

How much does it cost to ride the Indian Pacific train in Australia?

The cost for an Indian Pacific train excursion ranges from $875 per person to $2,345 per person and beyond.

Each train trip varies with each package. The longer the trip, the more side excursions and meals will be included. The longest trip is four days and three nights, while the shortest trip is two days and one night.

Is the Indian Pacific all-inclusive?

The Indian Pacific is all-inclusive with meals and excursions included in the price.

You will enjoy three meals a day aboard the Indian Pacific. For those times that you need a snack, head to the Outback Explorer lounge for a beverage and a bite to eat. Platinum passengers can enter the Platinum Club and partake in cocktails, barista services and hor de vours between meals.

What are the cabins like on the Indian Pacific?

The cabins on board the Indian Pacific are luxurious and comfortable. There are three levels of cabins that can be reserved depending on what accommodations you require. Although there are different levels of services and cabins, all accommodations excel in comfort and style adding to the enjoyment of your vacation.

Gold Service

Gold service allows for either twin or single accommodations. Twin berths feature en suite bathrooms, while single berths have shared toilets and showers in each carriage. Beds convert to either a double or triple seat during the day depending on berth size. Meals can be enjoyed in-room or in the dining car. The Gold Service is the most popular service chosen by travelers.

Platinum Service

Platinum service allows for extras such as a full-sized ensuite cabins with views on either side of the train, premium toiletries and use of the First Class Platinum Carriage. Comfortable seating with ottomans and tables by day, fold down to single or double beds by night. This is a service for the most discerning traveler.

Chairman’s Service

The Chairman’s Service will welcome you to the most luxurious rail carriage in Australia. This carriage accommodates up to eight people and includes three Platinum Double cabins and one Platinum Twin cabin. Enjoy a lounge that is reminiscent more of a grand living room than a train berth. Access to all Platinum Level shared amenities is granted for times you want to mingle with others.

Can I put my car on the Indian Pacific?

You can transport your car on the Indian Pacific if the need shall arise from April to September.

Take the train to your destination and unload your transported car for the road trip of a lifetime back to where you began. On the Indian Pacific you can transport your car from April to September. Load all your needed holiday gear into your car and let the vacation continue once you reach your destination by train.

What is the difference between Gold and Platinum Class on the Indian Pacific?

The difference between Gold and Platinum Class on the Indian Pacific is cabin and bed size along with the quality of products offered during your stay. Platinum Class also offers a separate First Class lounge for passengers.

What is the best cabin on the Indian Pacific?

The best cabin on the Indian Pacific is the Chairman’s service. The Chairman’s Service allows for a large family or group to stay in a carriage with an adjoining private lounge with plush seating, fine fabrics and views on the right and left sides of the train. The lounge is spacious and luxurious and allows for a traveling party to have a private experience as well as join in on First Class amenities afforded Platinum passengers.

Where does the Indian Pacific start and finish?

The Indian Pacific starts in Sydney, Australia and ends in Perth, Australia. However, there are excursions that make stops at other towns in between these cities. Depending on which excursion you choose, your start and finish will be in either Sydney, Adelaide or Perth, Australia.

What towns does the Indian Pacific stop at?

The Indian Pacific train stops at Broken Hill, Adelaide, Cook and Rawlinna going Westbound and Kalgoorlie, Rawlinna, Cook, Adelaide, Broken Hill, and the Blue Mountains going Eastbound. Each town will have a new and different experience for you to enjoy.

Which is better, the Indian Pacific or the Ghan?

The Indian Pacific is a better train than the Ghan because it is a transcontinental trip that will take you from the Pacific Ocean on the Eastern coast, to the Indian Ocean on the Western Coast. However, if you would like to see the country from North to South, the Ghan is as equally grand and opulent.

What is the dress code on the Indian Pacific?

There is no dress code aboard the Indian Pacific. However, you may want to pack warm comfortable clothes as the air conditioning can get cool. Likewise, you need to pack a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for your outdoor excursions in which you will be participating.

Is The Indian Pacific Worth It

Even though the expense and time involved to ride the Indian Pacific is high, it is one of the great rail journeys in the world and is totally worth doing. A ride on the Indian Pacific in Australia is not to be missed and should be added to your list of must try experiences.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

Indian pacific train tours australia faqs, how much does the indian pacific train cost.

Indian Pacific rail fares are going to vary quite significantly depending upon several factors. The time of year, class of accommodation, and which leg of the Indian Pacific journey you undertake will affect costs. Adelaide to Sydney, or the reverse Indian Pacific route is the shortest leg of the journey and you can book a journey for under £2000.

How long is the Indian Pacific train trip?

In terms of distance, the full length of the transcontinental Indian Pacific journey is 4352 km (2704 miles). The railway stretches from Perth on the Indian Ocean coast to Sydney on the east coast. The full Indian Pacific train ride goes via Adelaide, making several stops en route for off-train excursions. If you plan for the full-length Indian Pacific Rail journey, you’ll pass through Nullarbor, home to the longest straight stretch of railway track at 478 km (287 miles).

What time of year is best for an Indian Pacific package holiday?

Probably the most suitable time of year for an Indian Pacific train trip is during the Australian spring (September to November) and the Autumn (March to May). These seasons will offer much milder weather, making the journey through the diverse landscapes more pleasant. Places like the Nullarbor Plain have been known to experience temperatures in the high 40s, which can be pretty uncomfortable if you aren’t used to it. Spring showcases blooming wildflowers, while autumn provides comfortable temperatures to be onboard the Journey Beyond Indian Pacific, ideal for exploring off-train excursions and sightseeing along the route.

What is the Indian Pacific train route?

The Indian Pacific train route is a transcontinental journey that sees passengers journey from coast to coast onboard one of the country’s most luxurious cruiser trains. The route stretches from Perth to Sydney, covering 4352 kilometres (2704 miles) as it passes through spectacularly diverse landscapes, from mountains, open plains, and major cities like Adelaide. Indian Pacific Railway prices are extremely competitive when you look at luxury rail travel, and this trip offers a unique way to experience Australia’s varied geography and cultural heritage.

What is the Indian Pacific itinerary?

Indian Pacific train tickets are much desired as the train is one of the country’s most luxurious railway services, stretching from the Indian Ocean coast in Perth to the capital of New South Wales, Sydney. The Indian Pacific train itinerary includes stops at some of Australia’s most famous landmarks, including the Blue Mountains, Broken Hills, the Festival City of Adelaide, the ghost town of Cook, and Kalgoorlie, famous for its incredible gold mining history. Passengers onboard the Journey Beyond Indian Pacific experience diverse landscapes, from the rugged mountains to the vast and quite desolate Nullarbor Plain. The Indian Pacific train journey typically takes four days and 3 nights, offering fabulous onboard amenities, world-class cuisine, and an array of off-train excursions that showcase the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Australia.

What is the best cabin on the Indian Pacific?

The finest accommodation you can enjoy along the Indian Pacific train route is the Platinum Service Cabin. Indian Pacific train prices escalate if you opt for this service, but if you can afford it, you won’t be disappointed. These cabins are beautifully appointed and spacious and complemented by an unobtrusive personalised service provided by members of the hospitality team. This level of service also allows you access to the Platinum Club carriage for your meals and to socialise with other Platinum Service passengers. A platinum cabin provides a full-size en suite, panoramic windows, fabulously plush bedding and comfortable daytime seating.

The Indian Pacific route operates between Sydney and Perth, via Adelaide, typically offering bi-weekly departures in each direction. From Sydney, the Indian Pacific usually departs Sydney Central Station on Wednesdays and Sundays. From Perth, departures are commonly on Sundays and Thursdays from East Perth Terminal. The journey takes approximately 65 hours, with scheduled stops in key locations such as Broken Hills, Adelaide, Cook, and Kalgoorlie. Your choice of one Off-Train Experience (included in fare):

Broken Hill:

  • United We Stand and Miners Memorial: In the heart of Broken Hill, the Trades Hall stands as a testament to the city’s labour movement, where the fight for safer working conditions and the 35-hour work week began under the banner “United We Stand”. A live performance by local actors vividly brings the early mining struggles to life. Overlooking the town is the Miners Memorial, a stark and poignant tribute to the more than 800 miners who lost their lives in the depths below. The 54m structure, perched on the Line of Lode, offers not only a sombre reminder of the past but also panoramic views of the surrounding outback. Recommended Fitness Level: Low mobility – coach tour with short walks required. No wheelchair access.
  • Living Desert (Available: October – March): On the rugged western edge of New South Wales, Broken Hill’s creative spirit is etched into the landscape at the Living Desert Sculpture site. Perched atop a hill within a 180-hectare reserve, twelve monumental sandstone sculptures tell stories that echo through the vastness of the outback. This self-guided walk offers an artistic journey, with the added benefit of sweeping vistas of the remote, red-dust plains – a perfect spot to capture the stark beauty of the desert and its artistic soul. Recommended Fitness Level: Moderate mobility – includes a short approx. 1km walk on sealed pathway and some rocky ground.
  • The Regional Art Gallery: The Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery, New South Wales’ oldest, is housed in a historic emporium that once served the local Sully and Sweetapple families. Today, it showcases a rich tapestry of Australian art, from colonial masters like James Coutts Michie to contemporary icons like Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri. The gallery’s permanent collection is a journey through the nation’s artistic heritage while rotating exhibitions bring in fresh perspectives. Wander through this cultural treasure and immerse yourself in the vibrant history and creativity that define Broken Hill. Recommended Fitness Level: Low mobility – short walks are required to view artwork throughout the Gallery.
  • Main Drag Walking Tour with Shelita Buffet: Broken Hill’s fame was cemented in pop culture by ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’, and now you can relive that fabulous flair on a walking tour with local drag queen sensation Shelita Buffet. This isn’t your typical town tour; Shelita blends humour with history as she guides you past iconic buildings, mining relics, and quirky art installations. This retro milk bar, one of Australia’s last, has been serving up frothy milkshakes and fizzy sodas since the late 1930s. Whether you fancy a vanilla malt or an organic espresso, the nostalgic atmosphere is just as sweet as the drinks. Enjoy a performance by Cindy and Johnny, who will take you back to the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll before you return to the present-day comforts of the Indian Pacific. Recommended Fitness Level: Low mobility – Coach with short walks at Bells.

Rejoin your train and enjoy lunch on the Indian Pacific as you pass by the spectacular Flinders Ranges.

This afternoon, you’ll arrive in Adelaide and have another opportunity to take your pick of activities. Discover the natural history catalogued in the South Australian Museum or see and sample the wares of Adelaide Central Markets after dark. You might also choose to head out of town to either McLaren Vale or the Barossa Valley to sip on South Australia’s regional wines, or take a trip to the gorgeous Adelaide Hills and enjoy culinary delights in Hahndorf.

  • Hahndorf – Cheese: Hahndorf, a charming village founded by German settlers in the Adelaide Hills, is now a hub for food lovers. Begin with a cheese flight paired with Grunthal Cider, learning about the history of local producers like Udder Delights. After indulging in these regional flavours, head to The Haus, a restaurant that blends Bavarian tradition with local produce. Enjoy a lively evening of entertainment and a hearty, German-inspired meal before returning to the Indian Pacific. Recommend Fitness Level: Low mobility – coach tour with short walks required throughout.
  • Hahndorf – Gin: In the picturesque village of Hahndorf, delve into the world of craft gin at Ambleside Distillers. With an emphasis on locally sourced botanicals from the Adelaide Hills, this guided tasting offers a deep dive into the region’s unique flavours. Following your gin experience, enjoy a Bavarian-inspired dinner at The Haus, where local produce takes centre stage, accompanied by spirited entertainment. Recommended Fitness Level: Low mobility – coach tour with short walks required throughout.
  • The South Australian Museum: Discover the wonders of the South Australian Museum, one of the country’s most visited cultural institutions. Your exclusive tour covers everything from the vibrant fossil heritage of the Nullarbor Plain to the museum’s vast collection of opals, meteorites, and ancient sea monster fossils. The tour also includes a look at the world’s most significant collection of Australian Aboriginal cultural artifacts. Cap off your visit with drinks and a gourmet dinner hosted by one of Adelaide’s top scientists, making for an enlightening and memorable evening. Recommended Fitness Level: Moderate mobility – short walks required through the exhibits.
  • Central Markets After Dark: Experience the vibrant heart of Adelaide at the Central Markets, a culinary hub that has been delighting food lovers for over 140 years. The tour culminates in an exclusive after-hours dining experience, featuring a gourmet wine and cheese pairing, a sumptuous main course, dessert, and freshly brewed coffee, offering a true taste of the region’s rich culinary heritage. Recommended Fitness Level: Moderate mobility – a walking tour through the Market aisles and stalls.

Awake to the spectacular sunrise stretching across the Nullarbor Plain, the arid country stretching across South Australia’s coast. Spot mobs of kangaroos hopping across the horizon as the still desert expanse beams to life.

Stop off at the once-thriving community of Cook to catch a glimpse of pioneer times. This township was built to help maintain Australia’s (and the world’s) longest single stretch of train tracks, but today the population size has dwindled to a single digit.

Your Off-Train Experience (included in fare):

  • Cook: Deep in the heart of South Australia’s vast interior, the ghost town of Cook stands as a haunting relic of Australia’s pioneering past. Established in 1917 as a vital railway support town, Cook once bustled with activity, maintaining the tracks that linked the nation. As you explore this remote, time-worn settlement, you’ll get a rare and slightly eerie glimpse into a forgotten chapter of Australia’s history.

In the evening, travel further west to visit the remote town of Rawlinna, home to tens of thousands of sheep. Don’t forget to turn your attention to the sky and take in the glittering blanket of stars over the outback before returning to the train for the evening.

  • Outback Experience at Rawlinna: On the edge of Australia’s largest sheep stations lies Rawlinna, an outpost deep in the Nullarbor Plain that epitomizes the rugged spirit of jackaroo country. With up to 80,000 sheep spread across 2.5 million acres, this remote station is so vast that it takes eight hours to muster just one paddock by plane. During the winter months, disembark for an evening of drinks and canapes around a bonfire beneath the expansive Nullarbor skies. In the warmer months, the experience is elevated with a memorable outback dinner under the stars, offering a true taste of the Australian outback.

Breakfast is served as you venture past the rolling patchwork hills of the Avon Valley on your way to Perth. Savour a farewell lunch aboard the Indian Pacific before the railway leg of your journey comes to an end upon your 1pm arrival.

Wave goodbye to your luxury locomotive and meet your Luxury Escapes guide as you’re transferred to accommodation at the stylish QT Perth. Check in around 3pm and take time this afternoon to freshen up. Then, join your guide in the hotel lobby and head off for a delicious dinner to kick-start your Western Australia adventure before turning in for the evening.

Begin the day with a satiating breakfast at your hotel before travelling to the colourful port city of Freemantle for guided touring. Here, you’ll have ample time to soak up a unique bohemian spirit and delve into rich maritime history. Explore the Freemantle Markets, South Terrace (better known as ‘Cappuccino Strip’ due to its large number of coffee shops and restaurants) and the historic West End, home to some of Australia’s best-preserved gold rush era heritage buildings.

Get a glimpse into laidback local life at Cottesloe Beach, where you can walk on sun-kissed sands accompanied by views of the sparkling ocean. Then stop for a leisurely stroll around Kings Park, one of the world’s largest inner city parks. Here, pay a visit to the Western Australian Botanic Garden, an ornate area overlooking the city skyline and home to over 3,000 species of native flora.

End the day at your own leisure. You may like to indulge in a two-course set menu dinner at C Restaurant in the Sky, a revolving dining room serving upscale modern Australian fare with a side of spectacular city views (surcharges apply).

This morning, catch a ferry to Rottnest Island, just of the coast of Perth. This sun-soaked paradise is famous for its crystalline waters, diverse marine life, and 10,000 adorable inhabitants. Quokkas, dubbed the world’s happiest animals for their cheery-looking smiles, have made the island their home alongside a colony of New Zealand fur seals.

Take the opportunity to swim, snorkel, or simply while away the hours on the sand – though more active travellers may wish to hire bikes to explore this car-free island (surcharges apply).

Following your scenic return ferry to Perth, stop for a casual dinner at The Island at Elizabeth Quay, a harbourside restaurant and microbrewery serving seasonal Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare.

Travel time: Ferry – approx. three hours

After breakfast, begin the journey south toward Margaret River, renowned for its world-class wineries, surf breaks and rugged coastal beauty.

Your first stop today is Busselton. Here lies the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, stretching 1.8 kilometres into the turquoise Geographe Bay. Take the time to walk along the jetty, relax on the sand or perhaps enjoy a coffee at one of the bayside cafes. Soak up the coastal serenity before stopping at the Wise Wines cellar door for lunch and a wine tasting.

Check in at your luxurious accommodation this afternoon, the Pullman Bunker Bay Resort, set beside crystal-clear waters. Later this evening, sit down with your fellow travellers for a meal at the aptly named Other Side of the Moon restaurant, the perfect spot to watch the moon set across the ocean.

Travel time: Driving – approx. 3.5 hours

Kick-start your morning with a delicious breakfast, and perhaps a walk along the beach, before driving to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse for insight into the area’s maritime history. This small lighthouse has stood for over a century, once manned by a lightkeeper, prior to electricity. Climb its 59 steps to the top and look out over the Indian Ocean, the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and the bay.

Continue your journey south toward Margaret River, where you’ll have ample time to explore the town as you wish, surrounded by gorgeous national parklands. Enjoy lunch among the sprawling vineyards of Leeuwin Estate, where you’ll indulge in a gourmet four-course meal, with the option to add their accompanying wine pairings (from A$45 per person). You’ll also partake in an included wine tasting, savouring the nuances of each drop.

In the afternoon, take in views of the river mouth at Surfers Point, famous for its world surfing championship. Then, indulge in more included tastings at another vineyard or two. This evening, watch the sun dip below the horizon at Meelup Beach while indulging in a delicious dinner of local charcuterie and produce, before returning to your hotel.

Travel time: Driving – approx. three hours

Wave goodbye to gorgeous Bunker Bay this morning as you depart for Ngilgi Cave. Head underground for an immersive semi-guided tour of the cave, decorated in glistening stalagmites, stalactites, crystals and columns formed over thousands of years. Above ground, learn of the importance of the structure to the Wardandi People and follow a winding path through native bushland, taking in the vibrant flora and fauna in the area.

Your last stop is the bustling Origin Market, where local farmers, artisans and winemakers share their fare. Indulge in some last-minute shopping and perhaps take home a souvenir. Then continue back to Perth, where your magnificent journey comes to an end around 5pm.

Departure & Transfers

Checkout on your final day is at 11am. Your transfer back to Perth arrives at approximately 5pm, with drop-off in either the CBD or at Perth Airport (PER). Please book your flights to depart from Perth Airport (PER) after 7.30pm.
