What people love about Historical Tours

With a guided tour, you can not control the weather or your travelling companions. I was lucky with both, so that helped! That aside, on my tour through the 5 Stans there were so many things that could have gone wrong. There were the 3 weeks in hotels, the three internal flights and the guides for each leg of the journey. It has to be said that all of this was well managed by Steppe Travels. The communication was great, the hotels were better than expected and all the guides were excellent. There were some long days of travelling, but the itinerary was well thought through and everything worked well. Overall, it was a great trip and Steppe Travel met all my requirements. I recommend them.

It was Budget Tour for Everyone. We are so happy with the 5 Days Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived in Delhi, I was greeted by the friendly and knowledgeable tour guide who made me feel right at home. The tour covered the three iconic cities of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, also known as the Golden Triangle. Each city had its own unique charm and history, making the tour a perfect blend of culture, history, and adventure. One of the highlights of the tour was visiting the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra. Words cannot describe the beauty and grandeur of this iconic monument. The tour guide shared fascinating facts and stories about the Taj Mahal, making the experience even more enriching. In Delhi, I was able to explore the bustling streets of Old Delhi and visit popular landmarks such as the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. The city has a vibrant energy and the tour allowed me to immerse myself in its culture and traditions. Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, was a visual treat with its stunning architecture and colorful markets. The visit to the majestic Amber Fort was a highlight of the tour, with its intricate designs and breathtaking views of the city. The accommodations throughout the tour were top-notch and the food was delicious. I also appreciated that the tour was all-inclusive, so I didn't have to worry about any additional expenses. I recommend the 5 Days Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India to anyone looking to experience the rich history and culture of this beautiful country. The tour was well-organized, informative, and truly an unforgettable journey. I can't wait to visit India again and explore more of its wonders.

Our 1st day we concentrated on the many iconic sights of Midtown Manhattan, including inside the Empire State Building, NY City Library, Grand Central, Rockefeller Center, and many more including hidden gems along the way – all fantastic!!!

Amazing tour! We were fascinated the entire time. We ran into another of their guides while we were out and about – equally kind and gracious. We will definitely schedule some of their other tours next time we are in NYC.

Highly recommend the Gilded Age tour. Learned so much about a neighborhood I thought I knew so well. A great way to rediscover a city you love.

I gave my husband a private Gilded Age tour as a Christmas gift and we went on our anniversary in mid-January.  Quite honestly the tour was so interesting, that the weather didn’t distract us. We’ve both lived and worked in New York City so are very familiar with the city, but we learned so much!

What People Are Saying

Yelp review.

The Freedom Trail is one of the iconic touristy things to do in Boston, and there's a reason for that. I did the full trail many, many years ago but decided to go with this shorter, more compact trail with our family. The 1.5 hour length is the right duration for kids, and our guide, Jeremiah Poope (his actual last name!), kept it interesting the entire time. He has been a tour guide in Boston for many years, and he had a ton of interesting stories and facts beyond the typical revolutionary war factoids.

Email Review

We had a wonderful time and your guides were wonderful. They were energetic, informed, and brought history to life. Thank you once again!

TripAdvisor Review

We only had 1 day to explore downtown Boston, and this tour was a great way to see several different sites, learn about history, and get a bit of walking in. We were a few minutes late for the start of the 1pm tour but easily able to catch up and join in.. Our tour guide was fantastic! One member of my group uses a wheelchair, and the guide was great about leading the WHOLE tour through accessible entrances to sites and to sidewalks with curb cuts so that all of us could participate without feeling singled out.

Great tour with Isaiah Thomas! Great local guide who was very engaging and a walking encyclopedia of Boston history. It was a nice 1.5 hr walking tour hitting most of the south end Freedom Trail points of interest. For the money, it’s hard to beat!

The Freedom Trail Walking tour presents full of historic knowledge and our guide, Parker, provides us the best experience for this amazing learning adventure. That is to say, in this tour you can also learn about the myth and the truth of the history we learned from our textbooks. I would recommend anyone who visit Boston and is interested in learning history or simply just want to listen to funny stories

How many wars has europe had.

Europe has been involved in hundreds of wars over the years, including more than 100 wars in the 20th and 21st centuries alone. Two of the most horrific wars include WWI in which an estimated 37 million people perished, and WWII where the number of estimated deaths ranges from 60 to 80 million people, including military and civilian casualties.

What was the last religious war in Europe?

The Bosnian War lasted from 1992 until 1995 and was one of the last ethnically-rooted wars in Europe. It began when fighting broke out between the multiethnic population of the former republic of Yugoslavia. Around 100,000 soldiers and civilians died in the war, and it led to the genocide of at least 25,000 Bosnian Muslims, known as Bosniaks.

What were the major battles in Europe during WW2?

The Second World War was one of the deadliest events in human history, with hundreds of battles that claimed millions of lives. Some of the most major battles in Europe during WWII were the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, the Battle of Berlin, the Battle of Britain, Operation Barbarossa, and the Battle of Stalingrad in Russia.

Which European country has had the most battles?

Known as the ‘Battlefield of Europe’, Belgium has had more battles than any other country in Europe. Almost every big power of Europe has fought on its land since the Roman Empire, with historic battles such as the Battle of Waterloo, and the battles of WWI and WWII, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Battles of Ypres.

Imagine staying in an ancient manor, surrounded by the splendour of a historic collection, exploring extraordinary gardens and tranquil woodlands, listening to stories centuries old, and taking afternoon tea by a roaring fire.

Exclusive to just 12 guests, you will be surrounded by English history while soaking up the beauty of the Dorset countryside and Jurassic Coast.

“This was a once in a lifetime trip for us and Mapperton truly exceeded our expectations thanks to the amazing service from Sam and Dan and the warm welcoming from Julie and Luke” Greg & Kim, Texas, USA

In addition to experiencing a range of activities on Mapperton Estate, you will also visit at least one other magnificent stately home or historic location, enjoy the dramatic landscape and culinary delights of the Jurassic Coast, and perhaps find a treasure or two in a few of the regions’ antique centres.

History Tours & Travel

History Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Many tours and small ship cruises have an element of history in their itineraries. However, some of the most historical places in the world — Rome, Athens, Angkor Wat , and Egypt, to name a few — lend history the focus of their trip for true history buffs.

You can find history tours and trip itineraries that specifically cater to history lovers. Some tour operators specialize in offering historical travel tours and offer many exciting activities for hands-on interactive exploration.

Things To Do on Historical Travel Tours

A history trip is a fascinating way to journey through time and explore the wonders of history with a dedicated, knowledgeable guide. You can explore ancient ruins, dig into the mysteries of the pyramids, bust the myths about medieval castles, or stroll through the cobblestone streets — there's something for everyone on our selection of historical travel adventures.

Going Beyond the Museum

For a truly immersive historical experience, it's far more interesting to trace the footsteps of ancient people and cultures than to stare at artifacts encased in glass. The pasts represented by said artifacts come alive after experiencing the history outside the museum walls.

Luckily, the definition of a museum has evolved in recent years. Many are outdoors, follow a specific theme, and are more interactive than they used to be.

For example, a museum in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to hats! And, believe it or not, there's a museum in France dedicated to vampires.

There are so many avenues through which you can get a sense of culture and history; your history trips will hit many of them. Food, art, architecture, clothing, and even water sources all shape the history of people and places. The information you learn on a historical vacation will significantly enhance your appreciation of history.

Interactive History Tours

Discover how ancient people used to build their dwellings, savor the taste of historical cuisine of the Victorian era, learn to dance traditional folk dances or trace the footsteps of famous authors and artists.

No matter where you're traveling, interactive history tours provide an exciting link to the past for culture explorers . Especially if you're traveling with keen learners like children, activities where "history comes alive" are an absolute pleasure and are often included on history and not-history-specific tours.

Temples, Ruins, and Castles

From the spectacular Angkor Wat temple to the proudly standing ruins of the Forum in Rome and every anglophile's dream at Lancaster Castle in the UK , history tours will undoubtedly showcase impressive architecture.

Whether they still exist intact or are mere skeletons of their former glory, buildings such as these are always engaging and interesting to visit, especially for travelers aged 18 to 30 and 50+ . They also offer spectacular photo opportunities!

Check out these historic homes at Flemington house tour Saturday

The House Tours of Historic Flemington is back on June 1 after a successful return last year.

Run by the borough’s Historic Preservation Committee, the tour will feature 13 properties, including five houses and eight public buildings. Featured in the tour is the historic courthouse that the 1935 Lindbergh kidnapping trial took place in.

The tour returned last year after a seven-year hiatus and received a huge turnout of over 500 attendees.

Todd Cook, a member of Flemington Planning Board and house tours committee, said the tour is part of an effort to “bring awareness to historical preservation and the borough of Flemington at large.

“We are using historic tourism to bring awareness to Flemington,” Cook said.

Attendees can either tour the properties at their own pace, or can ride on a “hop on hop off” trolley, which will be going from building to building from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Aside from the courthouse, properties on the tour include the Samuel Fleming house, the Parker Evans residence and the De Luca residence.

Tickets are available online for $25 in advance or $30 the day of the tour and can be picked up at Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce.

Biltmore House outranked on Holiday Historic Home Tour poll: What claimed No. 1 spot?

historic travel tours

ASHEVILLE - Biltmore House is synonymous with Christmas and home tours so much so that it inspired a feature holiday film in its honor.

This season, the family home of famed entrepreneur George Vanderbilt shined in the Hallmark Channel’s original Christmas movie, “A Biltmore Christmas.”

This month, USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice poll of the Best Holiday Historic Home Tour included Biltmore House. This tourist destination remains the largest privately owned home in the U.S. and is known as America’s Largest Home.

Architecture, Vanderbilt family history and the themed décor and experiences are part of the estate's attraction. At its center, Biltmore House ― a multiyear construction project that resulted in a 250-room French Renaissance château where George Vanderbilt moved into and celebrated the first Christmas there in 1895.

The family home is surrounded by landscaped and natural scenery and breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Biltmore Estate, a National Historic Landmark, welcomes more than 1.3 million visitors, annually.

An estimated 330,000 guests are expected during the current Christmas season, which is Nov. 3-Jan. 7.

Yet, Biltmore House ranked No. 10 out of 10 on 10Best's Best Holiday Historic Home Tour.

What outranked Biltmore House?

The No. 1 spot was claimed by another beloved Southern destination, Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee — the former estate of Elvis Presley that features Christmas artifacts from the Presley family.

Best Holiday Historic Home Tour list for 2023

  • Graceland. Memphis, Tennessee.
  • The Christmas Mansion, formerly Stetson Mansion. DeLand, Florida.

Christmas at Biltmore

The Biltmore House features a historic house tour experience that fully encapsulates Christmas.

Christmas at Biltmore offers a 90-minute audio tour through Biltmore House that may be enjoyed during the day or after dark for the special Candlelight Christmas Evenings — an elevated tour of ambiance, music and more surprises.

Biltmore House is decked out with about 45,000 lights, 282 candles and 271 traditional poinsettias with rings of wreaths dotting the walls and mantles — a total of 238 fresh wreaths are featured across the estate.

The live 35-foot Fraser fir Christmas tree in the Banquet Hall is decorated with 500 ornaments and 500 LED Edison bulb-style electric lights and is the home’s main attraction during the season.

A total of 67 Christmas trees are found throughout the home — with an additional 13,870 ornaments — including one in the Library specially decorated for the filming of “A Biltmore Christmas” to fit the 1940s-era theme for the time-travel holiday flick.

A 55-foot Norway spruce tree and 36 illuminated evergreens sparkle at the center of Biltmore House’s front lawn.

The festive sights and spirit flow through the 8,000-acre estate from its illuminated Lodge Gate entrance to the Conservatory and Biltmore Gardens, Winery, Antler Hill Village, Deer Park, and estate hotel properties, shops and restaurants — which includes another 45 decorated Christmas trees and an estimated 850,000 lights.

More than 1,960 traditional poinsettias, plus another 4,265 seasonal plants, adorn the estate.

Christmas at Biltmore ends on Jan. 6 and Candlelight Christmas Evenings on Jan. 7. To schedule a visit to Biltmore, visit biltmore.com .

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

historic travel tours

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

historic travel tours

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

historic travel tours

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

historic travel tours

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

historic travel tours

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

historic travel tours

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

historic travel tours

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

historic travel tours

The Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center is a Russian training facility responsible for training cosmonauts for their space missions. It is in Star City of Moscow Oblast, a name which may refer to the facility itself or to its grounds. (Read more about Yury Gagarin Cosmonauts training center )

The secret Star City was built to train Soviet cosmonauts, including Yuri Gagarin, the 1st man in space. Many other famous Russian cosmonauts trained here with Gagarin: German Titov, Valentina Tereshkova, the first female cosmonaut, and Alexei Leonov, the first cosmonaut to exit the spaceship into space . The best facilities were built for them: the world’s largest centrifuge and hydro laboratory. Many cosmonauts from other countries (USA, Japan, Germany and many others) also have trained here together with Soviet Russian cosmonauts. On this Star (Space) City Tour you will see:

  • Models of Soyuz Soviet spacecraft
  • World's largest centrifuge with an 18-meter radius
  • Hydro laboratory, with the model of the International Space Station in water, which allows to simulate the weightlessness and many more
