Canadian indie-folk band, Hey Rosetta, create an intricate and densely layered sound through their incorporation of piano, violin and cello, alongside a traditional four-piece rock setup that expands their intimate songwriting to create an energetic live show.

Consisting of Tim Baker (vocals, guitar, piano), Josh Ward (bass, backing vocals), Adam Hogan (lead guitar), Phil Maloney (drums), Kinley Dowling (violin) and Romesh Thavanathan (cello), the band formed in 2005 in Newfoundland, Canada, often featuring additional musicians on tour. With their extensive lineup, the band create emotive folk-rock anthems, similar to fellow Canadians, Arcade Fire yet also finding influence from British orchestral-rock acts like Hope of the States and The Veils.

Having generated a significant buzz in their hometown through their live and radio performances, the band went into the studio in 2006 to record their first album, "Plan Your Escape." Their single, "Lions for Scottie," was featured as the ITunes Single of the Week, helping to build interest in the band. Their local success was celebrated through their achievement of several local and national awards, including 'Group of the Year.' The band soon signed to Canadian label, Sonic Records, re-releasing their debut album.

After embarking on several tours, they returned to the studio to record their second effort, "Into Your Lungs"(2008), which achieved a more cinematic sound. The band then broadened their audience through tours across Canada, US, Europe and Australia. Their third album, "Seeds," came out in 2011, recorded in only two sessions. The album was an immediate chart success, reaching number one in the ITunes Canadian Album Chart.

After several tours, supporting the likes of The Tragically Hip and Broken Social Scene, the band returned to the studio to record their fourth record, "Second Sight," which was released in October 2014. The album debuted at number six on the Canadian Albums Chart.

Live reviews

Newfoundland, Canada isn’t just the home of massive dogs, it’s the home of massive bands. Lets talk about Hey Rosetta! They are massive with there being seven of them, but seriously the indie rock and folk band who have been making waves either side of the Atlantic for the last decade almost. This band are the main event tonight ready to deliver their critically acclaimed breed of indie rock. The support bands have buttered up this audience enough in anticipation of this fantastic Canadian outfit.

The house lights dim, with just a few blue lights illuminating the stage, building a perfect setting the for this indie rock atmosphere. The drummer, Phil Maloney walks out and starts to hit the booming bass drum that shoots through the crowd, urging them to clap on the beat. When there is enough anticipation in the audience, that’s when the rest of the band take to the stage and they plough through the music that got them to where they are now. Playing songs such as “Yer Spring” which made it to 25 in the Canadian Alternative chart. “Welcome” is another song that generates enough buzz in this audience tonight to last the year.

I fell in love with Hey Rosetta! by seeing them live when they opened for Sarah Harmer nearly 5 years ago in London, ON. This is my 4th time seeing them, and they just keep getting better and better. Only complaint? They should have been headlining (not opening) and played a longer set. I did not get enough last night and I want more!!!

LOVE YOU GUYS!

Very talented gifted musicians. GReat performance. Lyrics were slightly unclear and muffled to me....but I often have that issue.

It would have been nice to hear bit more of their older material...but then again they were the opening band....and ppromoting new Cd tunes. Thankfully they Come to Calgary occasionally so can see them again.

Fantastic set by Hey Rosetta! Much better than Stars, who weren't great, unfortunately, but go see HR if you get a chance. Just a warm, fun show with incredibly talented performers that are in perfect sync with each other. The group really seems to love playing together. Loved it.

Unforgettable show! Very fun and engaging. Beautiful light setup. Played all the best songs. I am glad they moved the concert to a bigger venue (Phoenix Theatre) so that more people were able to share this amazing experience! The encore was perfect. I wish all the best to them!

New York, NY- ATO Records is pleased to announce the signing of Canada’s breakout success story of 2011,  Hey Rosetta!   ATO Records will release the critically acclaimed, ‘Seeds’, in the U.S. in February, 2012 preceded by an acoustic EP featuring several songs from the record surrounding their North American fall tour.

Hey Rosetta! experienced massive growth North of the border with the release of their album, ‘Seeds’, (Produced by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle and Sebastian, Wintersleep)  ‘Seeds’ employs some of the most poetic and profound lyrical offerings from Tim Baker (vocals/guitar), and grasps the full sonic expression of the band, including cellist Romesh Thavanathan, violinist Kinley Dowling, bassist Josh Ward, drummer Phil Maloney and guitarist Adam Hogan.

In a short amount of time, the band has amassed a loyal and devoted following from their unique brand of alternative/indie/folk/rock music drawing comparisons to early Sufjan Stevens, Mumford and Sons, and Snow Patrol among others, fueled by their passionate and compelling live performances.  Earlier this year, Paste Magazine named Hey Rosetta! among the ‘Top 5 Bands to See at SXSW’, and Billboard named them as one of the ‘Top 5 Canadian Bands To Watch’.

As displayed by their tireless work ethic and international touring over the past several years, Hey Rosetta! have proven that they not only deliver on record, but have earned a reputation as one of the most dynamic live bands Canada exports.  The band played over 300 shows in support of it’s last album, including tours of North America, Australia, China, Europe, the U.K…an even more impressive fact when taking into consideration origin of the band’s travels from their home in remote Newfoundland.

Hey Rosetta! will embark upon a North American headline tour, including a major market run across Canada including two nights in Toronto at The Phoenix and select stops into a handful of U.S. dates including Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York among other notable cities.

Hey Rosetta!

Hey Rosetta! hails from the rocky and cold northeastern province of Newfoundland, Canada. In 2005, frontman Tim Baker arrived home from a road trip with a suitcase full of poems and melodies. Hey Rosetta! was formed soon after with the addition of a string section (cellist Romesh Thavanathan and violinist Kinley Dowling) and rhythm section (bassist Josh Ward, drummer Phil Maloney, and guitarist Adam Hogan). Since then, they’ve blossomed into a powerful group whose explosive live shows have earned them a devoted following.

The band’s new album, Seeds, was produced by Tony Doogan (Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, Wintersleep). Seeds is available February 15th and reveals a maturing lyrical depth and an atmosphere rooted to the band’s passion for epic musical experiences.

It was while recording 2008’s breakthrough album Into Your Lungs (and around in your heart and on through your blood) that Tim Baker began to fully realize his vocal and lyrical abilities, and the band made a huge creative leap forward. Into Your Lungs garnered a slew of awards and critical accolades, was short-listed for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, and Hey Rosetta! were named one of Billboard’s Top 5 new Canadian acts.

During the three solid years of touring after Into Your Lungs was released the concept of Seeds was born. “The title track, “Seeds”, came about while out on the highway a few years ago” muses Baker. “In a way it’s about what our lives had become, and how we’re like seeds that float around into different fields and cities, bringing something and trying to build something for the people that come to see us.”

The group developed the sonic landscapes found on Seeds while maintaining an extensive tour schedule that took them to Australia, China, Europe, the US and on numerous tours of Canada (including a tour of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut). The band then holed up in Newfoundland to finish the songs before traveling to Halifax, NS to record with renowned producer Tony Doogan at The Sonic Temple. “Tony was really incredible at getting all the sounds and tones we’d dreamt up. He’s an amazing engineer and for all his Scottish bluster and pop-rock dogma, he is very sensitive, patient, and a gifted producer,” says Baker (who wrote all of the songs except “Downstairs”, “Young Glass”, and “Seeds” which were co-writes with guitarist Adam Hogan).

Thematically, Seeds explores everything from depression to procreation. “Young Glass” was written after reading J.D. Salinger’s “Franny and Zooey”. Baker explains:

“It’s sort of directed at the novel’s main character, Franny…. it describes a sleepwalking scene that didn’t actually occur in the book, but one that I imagined. We spent a lot of time flying and sleeping on planes and in airports and I was always finding myself in half-waking states, feeling, as one does, all alone somewhere between dream and reality. When I’d wake up, I was always surrounded by people, going about their business. I like that; a sort of evidence that even when we think we are completely alone, we are not. So I wrote Franny, a character who is plagued by such thoughts, a song about it… but it’s really about everyone”.

First single “Welcome” is a song about Baker’s close friends who were expecting a baby:

“I wrote a song for the little soon-to-be, who now is a 18 month old girl named Madeleine; healthy and beautiful, just like her parents” explains Baker, “I was just sitting with them talking to the unborn baby in a sort of cynical, joking way. You know, like “stay in there as long as you can kid. Sorry, but it’s a mess out here…” and so on. Later, alone, I was thinking about what it means to bring new life into the world, how it’s sort of sad but also so hopeful and kind of religious”.

Willie Mays by the numbers: Five statistics to help tell story of Hall of Famer's legendary career

Even without having watched him play, it's easy to see mays' value as a five-tool superstar.

mays-getty-3.png

Willie Mays, possibly the greatest player in baseball history, died on Tuesday afternoon. He was 93 years old. For various reasons , Mays' career cannot be justly summarized by reciting his statistics or reveling in his on-the-field accomplishments; he was, and frankly should remain, larger than that treatment allows. As veteran scribe Joe Sheehan wrote : "if you love baseball, there's a little piece of you missing today."

Still, baseball is the numbers game. For many observers, a player's statistics serve as an entry point to their career, a Rosetta Stone for understanding what the fuss is about. More than 50 years have passed since Mays took his final big-league at-bat; while he's an inner-circle legend, it's unreasonable to expect every fan to have boundless knowledge of his triumphs. That's where the statistics come in handy. They can fill in gaps, and kindle the curiosity required to dig deeper, to learn more about a player and their story.

Everyone should know Mays' story.

With that in mind, we here at CBS Sports wanted to honor Mays' life by honoring his career in a small way. Below, then, you'll find five numbers that help contextualize his ballplaying genius.

1. 24 All-Star Games

Ted Williams, a legend in his own right, once said , "They invented the All-Star Game for Willie Mays." It's hard to argue with that assertion. Mays finished his career with a record 24 All-Star Game appearances. While that number is slightly inflated since MLB , for a time, played two All-Star Games a season, Mays nevertheless made the Midsummer Classic every season from 1954 through 1973, or what served as his final season in the majors.

Mays was also named All-Star Game MVP in both 1963 and 1968.

It's almost unfathomable these days, making every All-Star Game for two decades; it's hard enough to make them for a decade-straight. Barry Bonds never did it; Shohei Ohtani may never do it; Mike Trout did it, if you give him a pass for the COVID-19 year, but even his run will fall short of Mays'.

To earn a spot year after year, for two decades straight, requires an otherworldly amount of consistency and focus, and yes, some good old-fashioned luck -- all the conditioning in the world doesn't make one immune to pulling a hamstring, or tearing a labrum. That last point shouldn't diminish Mays' accomplishment, it should enhance the run: everything had to be in precise alignment for him to do what he did. That kind of syzygy is rare, making it all the more special.

2. 660 home runs

The subsequent rise of Henry Aaron (and later of Barry Bonds) overshadows the fact that Mays was the second player in baseball's history to clear the 600-homer threshold. (Babe Ruth was the first.) Mays would finish with 660 home runs for his career, a figure that even now ranks sixth.

Mays didn't just slug, either. He led his league in batting average once, and in on-base percentage twice. He also established the pace for stolen bases four times, speaking to his great speed.

What's more is that Mays was also one of four players to record 600 home runs and 3,000 hits, alongside Aaron, Alex Rodriguez, and Albert Pujols .

3. 12 Gold Glove Awards

Mays wasn't just a great hitter, of course. He was also one of the most impressive and accomplished individual defenders in the sport's history. It's fitting that Mays' trademark play was tagged as "The Catch" -- no further specificity needed, for everyone knows the exact play. Can you imagine that happening in today's debate-obsessed world? No chance.

While Mays' running basket catch during Game 1 of the 1954 World Series has and will continue to endure -- even now, nearly 70 years on, similar plays prompt a reference to Mays' -- his defensive legacy is much larger than any single play.  Los Angeles Dodgers executive Fresco Thompson once said that Mays' glove was "where triples go to die ." That skill and reputation helped Mays earn 12 Gold Glove Awards during his career, the most of any center fielder in MLB history.

4. 156.2 Wins Above Replacement

We've established that Mays was an elite hitter and an elite defender at a premium position for a longer time than most players can dream. It should come as no surprise, then, that he ranks highly in terms of estimated Wins Above Replacement -- after all, you can make a strong case that he was the most well-rounded player in baseball's history, and they've played the game for a long time.

Baseball Reference's calculations, to cite one source, have Mays with the fifth-most WAR of all-time:

1. Babe Ruth, 182.6

2. Walter Johnson, 166.9

3. Cy Young, 163.6

4. Barry Bonds, 162.8

5. Willie Mays, 156.2

It wasn't just that Mays compiled WAR over a long time. He did it with brilliant season after brilliant season. As our Matt Snyder detailed on Tuesday :

A season of 8.0 WAR is generally considered MVP-caliber. Mays had 11 of those, trailing only Ruth and Bonds' 12. No one else has more than nine. If we set the criteria to 9-WAR seasons, Mays was second with nine (Ruth had 10, no one else has more than eight). If we went to 10-WAR seasons, Mays and Rogers Hornsby had six. Ruth had nine. No one else has more than three.

Whatever you think about WAR's value, you have to admit that Mays' dominance sure feels right.

5. 168 AL/NL games entering age-23 season

We'll conclude this exercise by noting that Mays' statistics could have been even more impressive were it not for circumstances beyond his control.

Remember, Mays began his career as a member of the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues before signing with the then-New York Giants . Mays would go on to appear in 155 MLB games with the Giants before reporting for military service in 1952 after being drafted during the Korean War. He wouldn't return to a MLB field until 1954, his age-23 season.

MLB only recently incorporated Negro League statistics as "big-league" numbers. While that decision was long overdue, it barely impacted Mays, whose time with the Black Barons was limited.

Still, given that Mays had instant success as the MLB level -- he won the 1951 Rookie of the Year Award after hitting .274/.356/.472 with 20 home runs and seven stolen bases in 121 games -- it's worth wondering if he would've found his way into the 700-homer club had he been able to play and focus exclusively on his baseball career during the 1952-53 campaigns.

We'll never know the answer for sure. And, in a sense, consider it a testament to Mays' brilliance that it hardly matters to his reputation as perhaps the greatest player of all time.
