Owning a humidor is a great way to preserve the flavor of your cigars and prolong their life. Before you can begin using your humidor, you need to do some prep work. You will need to season the humidor and assure the humidity levels are adequate to safely store your cigars.

Beginning the Seasoning Process

Step 1 Gather your materials.

  • Distilled water or propylene glycol solution (50/50)
  • A plastic bag
  • A cloth or rag

Step 2 Activate your hygrometer.

  • Wrap the hygrometer in the towel. Set it aside for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the hygrometer in the towel and calibrate it so it reads 95 to 97%. Each hygrometer will be calibrated differently. Refer to your manufacturer's instructions to figure out how to calibrate yours.
  • If your hygrometer already reads 95 to 97% when you remove it from the towel, it is ready to use. You do not need to calibrate it.

Step 3 Do any necessary cleaning.

  • If there is any old tobacco or debris in your humidor, spray the inside of the humidor with compressed air.
  • Wipe down the interior of the humidor with a damp rag.

Completing Preparation of Your Humidor

Step 1 Submerge the humidifier...

  • Keep the humidifier face down. Leave it submerged for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Wipe off any excess water with a paper towel when you remove the humidor.
  • Make sure you use distilled water. Tap water can damage a humidor.

Step 2 Place a plastic bag and damp sponge in the humidor.

  • Once the hygrometer and humidifier are in place, close the humidor.
  • Set the humidor aside somewhere where it will not be disturbed. Leave it closed for 12 to 24 hours.

Step 4 Repeat the process again.

  • Once you're done, the humidity level should be between 65% and 75%. It may be slightly higher right after you complete the process. Give the moisture levels a few minutes to go down.
  • Your humidor may not be between 65% and 75% after repeating the process a second time. In this case, you'll need to repeat the process one more time.

Caring for Your Humidor

Step 1 Store cigars properly.

  • In the event the humidity has dropped, you will have to repeat the preparation process. You would remoisten the humidor the same way you initially prepared it. You may also want to check the seal of your humidor if the humidity is fluctuating too often, as it may not be a quality seal.
  • Make sure to use distilled water when you repeat the process. This is just as important the second time around as it was the first. Tap water can harm the humidor and introduce contaminants into the closed system.

Step 4 Store your humidor safely.

  • A drawer is a good place to store a humidor.
  • If you have children or animals, keep the humidor out of their reach.

Expert Q&A

  • Periodically check the humidity level. Cigar experts generally accept 60-70% as a good range, but it is entirely up to you and how you like your cigars. Add distilled water (or a store-bought glycol solution) to your humidifier if it is too low. Thanks Helpful 6 Not Helpful 4
  • Some cigars can transfer flavor/aroma qualities to one another while in your humidor, so try to keep similar cigars grouped together. Thanks Helpful 5 Not Helpful 4

To prepare a humidor, activate your hygrometer by wrapping it in a towel dampened with warm water for 30 minutes. Next, remove the towel and calibrate the hygrometer so it reads 95-97% humidity. Then, submerge the humidifier in distilled water for 2-3 minutes before lining the inside with a plastic bag and sponge. Finally, install the hygrometer and humidifier and repeat the entire process again 12-24 hours later until the humidity level reads between 65% and 75%. For tips on maintaining your humidor, read on! Humidor 101: A Complete Guide to Cigar Humidor Setup and Care

Updated: Feb 24

A cigar humidor with a glass top and 8 cigars inside.

People often ask us, "How long can cigars last?" The answer is that they can last indefinitely, but only if cared for properly. To age cigars gracefully, you need a quality cigar humidor, and your new cigar humidor will require proper setup and care.

Fortunately, it's not a complicated process but requires attention and patience. It all starts with seasoning your humidor. This blog post will outline the necessary steps for preparing a new humidor.

We'll cover setting up a humidor with a standard humidification device. For Boveda packs, follow different guidelines. See below for seasoning with Boveda. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

First, we're focusing on how to set up a humidor with a standard humidification device. You must follow a slightly different process using an alternative humidity source like Boveda packs. We've outlined how to season a humidor with Boveda at the end.

A humidor keeps premium, hand-rolled cigars properly humidified and needs to maintain optimal humidity to function correctly. Humidors are usually made of solid cedar with a wood veneer and come in different sizes and shapes. It's essential to store your humidor at a comfortable room temperature, away from heat sources or sunlight. Most humidors come with a humidification unit and hygrometer, but not all.

WHEN YOU BUY A NEW HUMIDOR, IT NEEDS TO BE PROPERLY SEASONED

What You Need To Set up a Humidor

1. Humidification Unit

2. Hygrometer

3. Propylene Glycol Solution

4. 1 Gallon Distilled Water

5. A new, clean, and unused kitchen sponge

6. A glass dish or stainless steel bowl

7. A clean towel or dishrag

Seasoning a humidor takes 3 to 5 days but can vary based on the materials, humidification method, and size. Some enthusiasts take up to 2 weeks to break it in gradually and thoroughly.

Step 1. Calibrate the Hygrometer

A hygrometer is optional but essential for measuring humidity in a humidor. To ensure accuracy, calibrate it for 6-8 hours. All hygrometers need calibration. We recommend digital hygrometers for precise accuracy.

Step 2. Fill the Humidification Unit.

1. Remove the humidification unit from its box and place it in a dish.

2. Fill the unit with propylene glycol or distilled water for crystal-based humidifiers.

3. Squirt enough solution into the unit or submerge it in a dish.

4. Shake the unit over a sink to drain the excess solution.

5. For foam units with magnets, apply adhesive magnets before humidifying.

6. Place the unit in the humidor.

Note:  Never use tap water. We recommend propylene glycol to prevent over-humidifying.

Step 3. Humidify the Interior of the Humidor.

Soak a sponge in cold distilled water, ring it out slightly but not entirely, and place it in a plastic bag inside the humidor. If your humidor has a tray or removable shelf, leave it in the box while humidifying the interior so that the shelf itself will absorb humidity as well. Close the lid and wait for at least 3 to 5 days. Place a calibrated hygrometer inside the box to measure the humidity level.

Step 4. Measure the humidity.

Check the humidity after 3-5 days. Ideal reading is 75-80% RH. Your cigars will absorb some of this excess moisture. Solid hardwood humidors take longer to humidify. Refill the humidification unit or re-soak the sponge if humidity is low.

Step 5. Fill Your Humidor with Cigars

You can fill your humidor once your hygrometer reads 75% to 80% relative humidity (RH). We recommend filling at least half the humidor with cigars, but no more than 80 percent, to maintain proper humidity levels inside the humidor. This extra space allows air and humidity to move around more readily, ensuring all cigars can access adequate moisture levels.

Step 6. Perform Regular Maintenance

As a cigar enthusiast, it's important to remember that your humidor and cigars require regular attention and maintenance. Maintain a 65% to 72% humidity level and refill your humidification unit when the hygrometer reading drops below 60%. Only use distilled water or propylene glycol to refill and avoid tap water to prevent mold growth. Rotate your cigars (move the ones from top to bottom and vice versa) every week or two to maintain humidity levels and ensure even aging. This process gives you a perfect excuse to enjoy your cigars even when you're not smoking one!

Alternative Ways to Season

After two weeks, check the humidity reading. It should be in the low to mid 80% RH.

Replace the 84% humidity pouches with pouches that deliver a lower humidity output. We recommend 65%, 69%, or 72% RH.

Once your humidor is ready, you can fill it with your favorite cigars from your favorite local cigar shop. Replace the humidity pouches when their humidity level has been exhausted. Boveda pouches will stiffen up over time when their humidity is depleted. When the pouches become firm, it's time to replace them with new ones.

The number of cigars you store in the humidor, and the number of pouches you use will affect how long each pouch will last. Generally, Boveda pouches last at least two months and sometimes much longer. We carry humidification system products such as Boveda and Propylene Glycol at retail cigar stores in Indianapolis and Carmel.

Humidor Care and Instructions

If you are planning on keeping your cigars for longer than 1-2 weeks, you will need a humidor. Cigars must be kept below the maximum temperature of 73°F (23°C) and between 65-72% humidity . Ideal conditions are 70°F (21°C) and 70% humidity.

Proper cigar storage is crucial. If you do not store your cigars properly you may encounter some of the following problems: uneven or too rapid burn, harsh or bitter taste, broken wrapper, difficulty lighting or keeping the cigar lit, mold, and tiny holes in your cigars, a sign of tobacco beetle infestation.

When you first set up a humidor, you must check the humidity level at least every two weeks to ensure that the humidity does not vary. Once a month (more often in arid weather conditions) add a   Propylene Glycol Activation Solution (recommended) or distilled water to the humidification device . Once your humidor is stable and you have been taking care of it for a while, you will learn how long you can go without adding water or activation solution.

You should never use tap water as it contains minerals and chlorine that can clog the humidifier’s pores and inhibit operation.

Store your humidor in a cool, dry place to prevent mold growth. Avoid placing your cigars in direct sunlight. If the temperature and humidity get too high, cigars can develop a potentially damaging fungus or mold. Another hazard of cigars stored in too hot or humid an environment is an infestation of worms called lacioderma. The worms lay eggs inside cigars and burrow out, forming tiny holes in the wrapper and metamorphosing into tiny, brown beetles. If you discover the presence of worm holes in your cigars, remove and destroy the affected cigars immediately, and then carefully inspect all the cigars in your humidor for signs of infestation.

Do not keep your cigars in the refrigerator as it will suck out the moisture content of your sticks. Freezing your cigars is an extreme measure to be used only in case of bug infestation at the risk of damaging the cigars (but getting rid of the bugs is a victory of its own!).

A humidor’s proper moisture and temperature must be created before storing cigars, this is called Seasoning your Humidor. To setup your humidor, follow these simple instructions:

  • Saturate the black plastic humidifiers with   Propylene Glycol Activation Solution or distilled water. Dry off the surface of the humidifier and place on a towel for approximately one hour to make sure that no dripping occurs.
  • Some people like to wipe the interior of the humidor with a damp cloth, if you do this make sure you use a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water and take care not to leave the surface wet. This step can be skipped if you are afraid of damaging the cedar interior, as may happen if the wood becomes too wet. If you subject raw wood to water it may swell, crack or otherwise become compromised.
  • Leave a damp sponge in the humidor resting on a plastic bag. Make sure there is no direct contact between the sponge and the humidor. Instead of a sponge you may also use a shot glass full of water.
  • Attach the humidifiers and the hygrometer to the inside of the lid. Also, place the humidifiers in the bottom holders of the humidor if applicable.
  • Close the empty humidor for at least twelve hours or overnight.
  • Open the humidor and remove the sponge and the plastic bag. Close the humidor.
  • Your humidor is ready to store cigars when the hygrometer reads over 65%. This can take a few days or up to a week depending on various factors. When placing cigars in the humidor, make sure the cigars do not block the humidifier’s vents.

To check if the hygrometer is reading correctly, an efficient and cheap way to do it is to use the salt method to test its calibration. This test is good though can be less accurate. You just need to:

  • Place some salt in a bottle cap or small cup and dampen it with a few drops of water (without dissolving it).
  • Carefully place the wet salt and the hygrometer inside a see-through container and close tightly. You can use a zip lock bag provided it seals well and you leave some air inside as well.
  • Let it sit for at least 6 hours and note the reading on the hygrometer without opening the container. It should be exactly 75%, the difference is how much your hygrometer is off.
  • If needed, adjust the needle to 75% by turning the screw on the back.

If you follow these instructions correctly you should have a stable humidor that will keep your cigars in perfect smoking conditions for a very long time.

How to Set Up and Use a Humidor

guardsman travel black cigar humidor instructions

When you buy your humidor, it doesn’t come ready for you to pop your cigar collection in there right away. You need to set up your humidor before you can use it.

This setup doesn’t take too long, and it’s not a difficult thing to do, but it is important. The humidor is designed to keep your cigars fresh and at the proper humidity levels and temperature. Prepping your humidor helps ensure it can do its job.

Let’s take a closer look at how to set up and use your humidor, and why it’s important to do so.

Why Setting Up Your Humidor Is Important

guardsman travel black cigar humidor instructions

The setup of a humidor is often referred to as seasoning a humidor . You season a humidor much in the same way you season other things, such as food. You’re prepping the humidor for use.

The reason this is important to season your humidor is that you need to prepare the interior of the humidor for the proper levels of humidity. Without setting up and seasoning your humidor, it will do a poor job of keeping the humidity levels consistent and controllable.

This can lead your cigars to dry out and crack. That’s exactly the opposite of what you want to happen.

Setting Up Your Humidor

How to set up and season your humidor

So, how do you set up your humidor? It’s honestly fairly easy. The exact instructions will vary from humidor to humidor, but the gist of it is that you add water or moisture to the interior of your humidor prior to use.

You want to bring the levels of humidity up to somewhere around 70 percent. From there you have things right where you want them and can fine-tune as you see fit.

As I mentioned the exact setup will vary from humidor to humidor. That said, in some of the versions, you simply wipe down the interior of the box with a wet cloth. You’ll also need to also attach the hygrometer to the inside of the humidor.

The Klaro Desktop Analog Cherry Humidor (or the digital version of this same humidor), for example, requires both the humidification device and the hygrometer to be attached to the lid of the box. Many of the higher-end humidors have built-in hygrometers.

For these higher-end models, it’s a matter of seasoning the humidor and getting your humidification device set up. Klaro humidors come with our own proprietary Hydro System. Setting up this system is simple. Here’s a quick guide .

Using Your Humidor

guardsman travel black cigar humidor instructions

Once your humidor is set up, it’s ready for use. Still, you need to monitor the interior humidity level and the temperature. Just because you seasoned your humidor properly doesn’t mean that it will always stay that way.

Check your humidor periodically, and make adjustments as needed to the humidification device. This may mean referring back to the Hydro System instructions from time to time.

Keeping your humidity levels within the correct range will also vary from humidor to humidor. You’ll find different sizes of humidors and different types of humidification devices perform differently. This means what works well for one kind of humidor might not for another, especially if the size and humidification device are different.

It might take a little while for you to feel like your cigars are where you want them to be in terms of humidity. Everyone is a little different. Some cigar enthusiasts prefer a more moist cigar whereas others prefer something on the drier side. There’s no right or wrong answer here, but typically most cigars do best between 67 and 72 percent humidity.

Also, as you add more cigars to your humidor, you need to continue to carefully monitor the level of humidity. It will change slightly as you add or remove cigars. Also the quality and make-up of your cigars will factor in as well.

The bottom line is once you season your humidor, it’s ready for use. From there, you should monitor the humidity level to make sure it’s within the recommended ranges. If you do that, you should be able to enjoy properly humidified cigars for years to come.

  1. How to Use a Travel Humidor: What You Need to Know

Prep a Travel Humidor with Propylene Glycol & Distilled Water. If your travel humidor came with a humidification unit, charge the humidifier with propylene glycol solution or distilled water. The type of water you use in a humidor matters. Do not use tap water or bottled water that's not distilled because you can introduce mold to your cigars.

Scotte Cigar Case Humidor Gift Box cigars jar humidifiers-Cigar Hygrometer humidifier-Travel Cigar Tube for 4 to 5 Cigars (black) 4.7 out of 5 stars 2,240 1 offer from $18.99

  3. How to Prepare a Humidor: 11 Steps (with Pictures)

Submerge the humidifier in water and line the humidor with a plastic bag and a sponge. Then, install the humidifier and the hygrometer and set the humidor aside for 12 to 24 hours. Once you're done, the humidity level should be between 65% and 75%. It may be slightly higher right after you complete the process.

  4. Cigar Humidor Setup and Care: Your Complete Guide

    5. A new, clean, and unused kitchen sponge. 6. A glass dish or stainless steel bowl. 7. A clean towel or dishrag. Seasoning a humidor takes 3 to 5 days but can vary based on the materials, humidification method, and size. Some enthusiasts take up to 2 weeks to break it in gradually and thoroughly. Step 1.

  5. How do I prepare a new humidor?

After a few minutes, affix the humidification unit to the roof of your humidor (or in the case of the glass top humidors, place it to either side or follow the instructions that came with your humidification unit) and close your humidor. It should be allowed to sit for at least 12 hours. After 12 hours repeat step 1. Do not skip this step.

  6. Humidor Care and Instructions

Leave a damp sponge in the humidor resting on a plastic bag. Make sure there is no direct contact between the sponge and the humidor. Instead of a sponge you may also use a shot glass full of water. Attach the humidifiers and the hygrometer to the inside of the lid. Also, place the humidifiers in the bottom holders of the humidor if applicable.

  7. How to Season & Set-Up a Humidor

Adequate time has to pass for the humidor to appropriately absorb enough moisture and reflect the humidity level. After 2 weeks, check the humidity reading on your hygrometer. It should be in the lower to mid-80s. Replace the 84% humidity pouches with pouches that deliver a lower humidity output, i.e. 69% or 72% RH.
