A guide to the immigration and visa requirements for visiting the Cayman Islands

All people arriving in the Cayman Islands are required to produce to an Immigration Officer a valid passport or other travel document that establishes his identity, nationality and his place of permanent residence. People travelling to the Cayman Islands on a passport are not required to prove their place of permanent residence upon entry; however, people who are able to enter without a passport (i.e. persons permanently resident in and travelling from the UK, the US or Canada) must prove their place of residence. All visitors must have a return ticket.

By law, a person who has no other basis to enter the Cayman Islands (i.e. a Work Permit), and no right to residence, may be admitted into Cayman as a visitor for up to six months, with extensions permissible in rare circumstances thereafter. However, many people arriving in Cayman will be permitted entry for an initial 30 days only, unless they own property in which they will be staying and can demonstrate an ability to maintain themselves during their stay.

Requirements for Visitors

If a person is admitted as a visitor, wants to stay longer and an extension beyond 30 days was not approved on initial arrival, then they must go to Customs and Border Control (CBC) located on 94A Elgin Avenue in George Town before their time runs out, fill in an extension form and request to remain longer. This process can also be done online at  www.cbc.gov.ky . Fees of CI$50 are payable for the first extension and CI$100 for each further extension. Note: It can get quite expensive after a few months! However, if you plan well in advance and come prepared with a letter showing you can support yourself, have health insurance and have somewhere to live, you may possibly be given a longer period to stay upon landing.

If a visitor is arriving for a significant period, like many of our returning ‘snow birds’ do over the winter period, they will generally be admitted for up to six months. For this, they must show the entry officer their return ticket, a very recent bank or investment statement showing that they have sufficient funds to support themselves and a hotel/condo reservation or a lease. This paperwork is looked at very discreetly and returned to the visitor. If the visitor owns a home in the Cayman Islands and can show the Land Register, then a six month permission will be granted to them and other visitors accompanying them.

Visas for Cayman

Nationals of the USA, Canada, the UK and most countries within the British Commonwealth do not require visas to enter the Cayman Islands. Citizens of Jamaica (between the ages of 15 and 70), Honduras and the Philippines, for example, do. Check the ‘Visa’ section of www.cbc.gov.ky  if you need one. However, if you hold a passport from Jamaica, India or China and you have a US, UK or Canadian Visa, you do not need a separate Cayman Visa. However, you must enter Cayman directly from the country where you hold the visa and can only stay in the Cayman Islands for 30 days. Where visas are required, they must be sought and obtained prior to travel. Contact the British Embassy or Consulate with a visa department that is nearest you. There is a dedicated visa office within the Customs and Border Control office. You can call the manager of that department on (345) 649 4579 or email: [email protected] . There is also one in Kingston, Jamaica. Tel: (876) 906 7866/5336 or email: [email protected] .

Applying for a Visitor Extension

If you are a visitor and would like to remain longer than the amount of time you were given on entry to the Cayman Islands, then the following must be done prior to your time running out:

Visit this page of the Cayman Islands Customs & Border Control website, fill in the form, include your contact information, and within 24-48 hours you will get a video call on WhatsApp, Zoom ir Skype to confirm your identity.

The applicant must provide evidence of his/her ability to support themselves in the Cayman Islands. If an applicant is dependent upon hospitality being furnished by a friend or relative, the applicant is advised to have his/her host provide proof of support to avoid delay.

The below list of documents (not exhaustive) should be presented together with the application to aid in the processing of an application. Some may not be relevant but gather whatever you think might be needed:

- Travel documents (return plane ticket or confirmation of reservation) - Processing fee - The white landing card (E/D Card) - Proof of finances, or if being sponsored, the sponsors proof of solvency - Birth certificate - Marriage certificate - Evidence of Property/Land registration - Bail bond - Deed poll - Health Insurance - Doctor’s note - Custody or Guardianship agreements

Fees of CI$50 are payable for the first extension and CI$100 for each further extension.

Seeking employment whilst in the Cayman Islands as a visitor

There is no prohibition against seeking employment whilst visiting the Islands as a tourist, however, if you do find employment then you cannot be on the island when the work permit is submitted to the Department of WORC.

A Business Visitor’s Permit & Visitor’s Work Visa

Any business in Cayman that regularly needs workers to come from overseas to work for no more than 14 days on any particular visit may seek to apply for a Business Visitor’s Permit, allowing such individual(s) permission to work for a specified number of visits per year, subject to strict limitations. These Business Visitor’s Permits are not available for people attending for one visit only. Please see this page for the Business Visitors Permit application form .

There is also a category of Visitor’s Work Visa that permits individuals who are employed outside of the Islands (and who wish to visit for up to five calendar days at a time to engage in commercial activity with a locally licensed entity or person/sponsor) to apply for the grant of a Visitor’s Work Visa. To obtain a grant on arrival, the local business or visiting worker must send to Customs and Border Control a cover letter explaining why the visitor is coming to Cayman and what they are coming to do, and include the 'Visitor Work Visa Letter of Invitation' which can be filled in online, printed off, signed and then emailed - no later than 24 hours before the visitor is arriving - to  [email protected] . It should be noted that once approved, the person will be required to pay CI$100 at the airport. The Visitor’s Work Visa is not available to those who are employed in a professional capacity (lawyers, accountants, medical professionals, architects, surveyors, teachers and other occupations) or who are otherwise not entitled to a work permit by virtue of having reached their term limit. The Visitor’s Work Visa also does not exempt someone from the requirement to obtain an entry visa if they possess a passport from a country that would otherwise require a Visitor’s Visa to enter the Cayman Islands. In addition, a business visitor may not hold more than one Visitor’s Work Visa in relation to the same sponsor or sponsors within the same calendar month, but unlike a Business Visitor’s Permit, a Visitor’s Work Visa may be used for a single visit. Visitor’s Work Visas are dealt with by Customs and Border Control, not WORC.

Entry Requirements & Customs in Cayman Islands

All visitors, including those from the U.S. and the British Commonwealth countries, must have a valid return or ongoing plane ticket. All individuals 12 years of age or older are charged a departure tax of CI$20. This tax is included in the cost of airfare.

All U.S. citizens traveling to the Cayman Islands must carry a valid passport. Canadian and U.K. citizens are not required to carry a passport but need to provide proof of citizenship, such as an original birth certificate with a raised seal or a notarized copy of a birth certificate, in addition to a valid government-issued photo ID. Citizens of all other nations need a passport for entry into the Cayman Islands. Travelers carrying passports must ensure their passport is valid for up to 6 months after the scheduled date of return to the home country.

Remember, if you are not a U.S. citizen and you are stopping in or traveling through the U.S., or a U.S. territory (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) before arriving in the Cayman Islands, you will need a passport and possibly a U.S. visa. For the most up-to-date information on obtaining transit visas for the U.S., consult www.travel.state.gov .

For information on how to obtain a passport, contact the following agencies.

For Residents of Australia -- Contact the Australian Passport Information Service at tel. 131-232, or visit the government website at www.passports.gov.au .

Visas for the Cayman Islands are not required for U.S., Canadian, U.K., or E.U. citizens, nor for citizens of several countries in South America and the Middle East. Consult www.caymanislands.ky , or your nearest Cayman Islands tourist office, for a full list of nationalities that require a visa for entry. To apply for a visa for the Cayman Islands, you must contact your nearest British Consulate or High Commission Office.

For answers to complicated questions about what you can and cannot bring into the Cayman Islands, contact Cayman Islands Customs (tel. 345/949-4579; www.customs.gov.ky).

What You Can Bring into the Cayman Islands -- Like all Caribbean islands, the Caymans restrict what visitors can bring. There's a ban on raw fruit and vegetables. Also on their official list for exclusion are "firearms of any kind, pole spears, Hawaiian slings, and spear guns." So as not to upset the delicate ecology of these islands, live plants or plant cuttings are also forbidden. Visitors age 18 or over are allowed to bring in -- duty-free -- 4 liters of wine or one case of beer; 1 liter of alcohol; and 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco.

What You Can Take Home from the Cayman Islands -- If you are thinking of bringing home sea turtle products (sunglasses, boxes, jewelry, and other accessories), first consult the website of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (www.cites.org). The convention strictly prohibits the importation of sea turtle products into the countries that have signed the agreement. The U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are among the 171 countries that adhere to this convention. In addition, U.S. Customs prohibits the transshipment of turtle products through the United States, and any products discovered will be confiscated.

U.S. Citizens: Returning U.S. citizens who have been away for at least 48 hours are allowed to bring back, once every 30 days, US$800 worth of merchandise duty-free. You'll be charged a flat rate of 4% duty on the next US$1,000 worth of purchases. Be sure to have your receipts handy. On mailed gifts, the duty-free limit is US$200. With some exceptions, you cannot bring fresh fruit and vegetables into the United States.

For specifics on what you can bring back, download the invaluable free pamphlet Know Before You Go online at www.cbp.gov (click on "Travel," and then on "Know Before You Go"), or contact U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), 1300 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20229 (tel. 877/287-8667; www.cbp.gov), and request the pamphlet.

Canadian Citizens: Canada allows its citizens a C$750 exemption, and you're allowed to bring back duty-free one carton of cigarettes, one can of tobacco, 40 imperial ounces of liquor, and 50 cigars if you meet the minimum age requirements set by the province or territory through which you enter Canada. In addition, you're allowed to mail gifts to Canada valued at less than C$60 each day, provided they're unsolicited and don't contain alcohol or tobacco (write on the package "Unsolicited gift, under C$60 value"). All valuables should be declared on the Y-38 form before departure from Canada, including serial numbers of valuables you already own, such as expensive foreign cameras. Note: The C$750 exemption can be used only once a year and only after an absence of 7 days. For a clear summary of Canadian rules, write for the booklet I Declare, issued by the Canada Border Services Agency (tel. 800/461-9999 in Canada or 204/983-3500; www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca).

U.K. Citizens: U.K. citizens have a Customs allowance of 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or 250 grams of smoking tobacco; 4 liters of still table wine; 1 liter of spirits or strong liqueurs (over 22% volume) or 2 liters of fortified wine, sparkling wine, or other liqueurs; 60 cubic centimeters (mL) of perfume; 250 cubic centimeters (mL) of toilet water; and £145 worth of all other goods, including gifts and souvenirs. Individuals 17 and under cannot have the tobacco or alcohol allowance. For more information, contact HM Customs & Excise (tel. 0845/010-9000 in the U.K. or 020/8929-0152; www.hmrc.gov.uk).

Australian Citizens: The duty-free allowance for Australia is A$900 or, for those under 18, A$450. Citizens over age 18 can bring back 250 cigarettes or 250 grams of loose tobacco, and 2.25 liters of alcohol. If you're returning with valuables you already own, such as foreign-made cameras, you should file form B263. A helpful brochure available from Australian consulates or Customs offices is Know Before You Go. For more information, contact the Australian Customs Service (tel. 1300/363-263; www.customs.gov.au).

New Zealand Citizens: The duty-free allowance for New Zealand is NZ$700. Citizens over 17 can bring back 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco (or a combination of all three if their combined weight doesn't exceed 250g); plus 4.5 liters of wine and beer, or 1.125 liters of liquor. New Zealand currency does not carry import or export restrictions. Fill out a certificate of export, listing the valuables you are taking out of the country; that way, you can bring them back without paying duty. Most questions are answered in a free pamphlet available at New Zealand consulates and Customs offices: New Zealand Customs Guide for Travellers, Notice No. 4. For more information, contact New Zealand Customs, The Customhouse, 17-21 Whitmore St., Box 2218, Wellington (tel. 04/473-6099 or 0800/428-786; www.customs.govt.nz).

Cayman Islands Travel Requirements, June 2022

Cayman Islands Travel Requirements

The Cayman Islands are ready to welcome you back and we’re sure you’re itching to get back! (It is, however, understandable if you’re a bit concerned or timid about what you need to do to meet the travel requirements of our Caribbean nation so that you keep yourself and others safe (and have fun!). Have no fear; we’re about to spell out exactly what you need to do to get your toes back in our sugary white sands…

Newest Travel Regulatory Updates

As of early April 2022, the Cayman Islands Government has made the following amendments with respect to COVID and travel.

Any fully vaccinated person may travel to the Cayman Islands without being subject to quarantine on arrival if they: Complete the pre-arrival test, complete the mandatory medical and travel questionnaire and undergo a medical examination. Additionally, if a Customs and Border Control agent considers it necessary one must complete and submit a travel declaration to Travel Cayman in advance of your travel time. This must be done no later than 72 hours before your trip. You also must provide evidence of the travel declaration when requested to do so by a CBC Officer upon arrival in the Cayman Islands.

Other Important Notes – Cruise Ships

As of March 2022 any person disembarking must have completed an approved vaccine course at least two weeks prior to embarking a cruise ship. This applies for captains and crewmembers of the ship as well. Additionally, unvaccinated children under twelve years old can only disembark when accompanied by a fully vaccinated adult. Lastly, fully vaccinated travellers can enter the Cayman Islands via cruise ship without having to quarantine. The Cayman Islands government also encourages anyone planning to travel to the islands to check back frequently for further updates so they are up to date on the most current information.

More Important Information For Travellers

Take a breath, it will be okay. We have a few more bits of useful information for those of you readying yourself for arrival. Children the age of 11 and younger will take the vaccination status of their parents. This means that we’re allowing fully vaccinated visitors to travel with children aged eleven and younger. Unvaccinated travellers aged twelve and over are not able to travel to the Cayman Islands at this time unless the visitor has a “close tie” to the nation. A “close tie” is defined as any person who can demonstrate that they own a business or property in the Cayman Islands or has a close family tie. A family tie is anyone that is the spouse, civil partner, sibling, parent, stepparent, grandparent, grandchild, child or stepchild of a Caymanian or Resident. Visiting unaccompanied children under the age of 12 years, even if unvaccinated, will not be required to quarantine under certain conditions. If you are an unvaccinated Caymanian or returning person with resident status you will be required to quarantine for at least seven days. For more information about vaccine requirements, quarantine it is strongly suggested that you visit the official Cayman Islands Government website .

Now Let’s Make Those Travel Arrangements

Now that you’re ready to go, lets quickly review the next steps to getting here. First and foremost you must apply to the  Travel Cayman portal  for an official Certificate to Travel by requesting a Travel Declaration. You also must be fully vaccinated by an approved vaccine. Once you’ve fulfilled those obligations you must take a certified rapid antigen test, a PCR test or a NAAT test the day before departure. This test must display a negative result for any travellers the age of five and older. Additionally, this test can be taken at any time the day before your departure. To eliminate any confusion, the test is not limited to 24 hours before departure so you don’t have to worry about counting the minutes…

Approved Vaccines

Just so you know. These are the approved vaccines for entering the Cayman Islands. Also, it should be know that if a person is found to be producing a false vaccination document they will be liable, on conviction, to a fine of $10,000 and imprisonment for two years.

  • Janssen COVID-19 vaccine (Johnson & Johnson) (single dose)
  • Moderna COVID-19 vaccine (two doses)
  • Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (two doses) European Version SK Bio Version Serum Institute of India version ‘Covishield
  • Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (two doses)
  • Sinopharm (two doses)
  • Sinovac (two doses)
  • Covishield (Astrazeneca/India)

“Mixed doses of approved vaccines taken at least eight weeks apart”

We know it sounds like a lot to digest but trust us, it is very doable and these measures are in place for your safety and the safety of the other travellers and airline staff accompanying you to the Cayman Islands. It is also important to note that these measures are very dynamic and always changing so its important to make sure you are checking back regularly to ensure that you are up to date on the most current information. Someday soon things will be back to normalcy but until then, we’re all in this together. We look forward to seeing you on the beach!

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

  • In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Zika virus is a risk in this country.

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

During your trip:

  • Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
  • Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

For more information, see Zika virus: Pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)   is a virus that attacks and impairs the immune system, resulting in a chronic, progressive illness known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

High risk activities include anything which puts you in contact with blood or body fluids, such as unprotected sex and exposure to unsterilized needles for medications or other substances (for example, steroids and drugs), tattooing, body-piercing or acupuncture.

Medical services and facilities

Medical facilities and services are generally good. There are several public and private hospitals and clinics on the islands. The main Hospitals are in Grand Cayman, the sister island Cayman Brac has a smaller hospital, and Little Cayman has a medical clinic. Therefore, the medical services are more limited on the Sister Islands. The Cayman Islands provide a wide range of ultra-modern medical services. Treatment is expensive, and cash payment may be required upfront. Make sure you have accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment and medical evacuation if required. Severe cases requiring critical care may require medical evacuation to the United States for treatment. Be aware that medical evacuations can be extremely expensive.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Special events like the Cayman Cookout and Cayman Carnival Batabano provide unique experiences worth planning your trip around, and sometimes, that means visiting the island during peak tourist season!

Getting to Grand Cayman

Reaching Grand Cayman is straightforward, with Owen Roberts International Airport in George Town as the main gateway.

Grand Cayman is well-connected, with numerous airlines offering direct flights from major North American cities.

Rum Point is known for its laid-back atmosphere, with hammocks, a restaurant, and a bar. It’s a fantastic spot for a day of relaxation, offering soft white sands and shallow blue waters perfect for swimming. Rum Point also provides a variety of water sports activities. It is a popular departure point for excursions to Stingray City.

Barefoot Beach

A hidden gem on the east side of the island, Barefoot Beach offers seclusion and beauty. It’s challenging to find due to the lack of signage, adding to its appeal as an escape from the crowds. The beach is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet, with opportunities for snorkelling in clear waters.

Boggy Sands Beach

Situated at the north end of Seven Mile Beach, Boggy Sands Beach offers snorkelling opportunities in a less crowded environment. Its location makes it a quieter alternative to the busier sections of 7 Beach, ideal for those looking to escape the crowds.

  • Governor’s Beach

Governor’s beach, located in the heart of Seven Mile Beach, is known for its white sandy beach and proximity to the Governor’s residence. It’s a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying stunning sunsets. The beach is busier than some others, especially during weekends, but it offers a classic Seven Mile Beach experience.

Is Seven Mile a Must-Visit Beach on Grand Cayman?

As residents of Grand Cayman, we’re incredibly proud of Seven Mile Beach. It’s an iconic destination that often features in top lists of the best beaches in the world, but think of it as the Waikiki of the Cayman Islands. The gorgeous beach is a sight to behold and a must-visit on your first trip to the island, but if serenity and a less-touristy vacation are on your mind, you can choose other pristine spots on the island. The East Coast is a beautiful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Grand Cayman.

Best Things to Do on Grand Cayman

Stingray city.

An encounter with the stingrays at Stingray City stands out as one of the most memorable experiences in Grand Cayman. A short boat ride brings you to a shallow sandbar where you can interact with and feed the friendly stingrays that glide through the clear waters. This unique interaction is perfect for families and offers an optional snorkelling excursion to the nearby Coral Gardens, showcasing vibrant marine life.

Scuba diving gear with fins and snorkels set on a sandy beach with a large driftwood log, overlooking the clear turquoise sea, ready for an underwater adventure.

Kittiwake Shipwreck

The Kittiwake Shipwreck is a diver’s and snorkeler’s paradise. Sunk in 2011 to create an artificial reef, this former submarine rescue vessel is now home to an array of marine life, including turtles and tropical fish. The site is accessible to divers of all skill levels, offering a glimpse into a thriving underwater ecosystem.

The Cayman Turtle Centre: Island Wildlife Encounter

Offers a unique combination of conservation efforts and interactive experiences with marine life, particularly the endangered green sea turtle. It’s recognized as Cayman’s largest land-based attraction, welcoming over 200,000 visitors annually. This centre is not just about getting up close with these majestic creatures; it also significantly boosts their populations through conservation and education initiatives.

Visitors to the Cayman Turtle Centre can look forward to various activities. You can swim and snorkel with turtles in a lagoon that’s teeming with vibrant marine life, slide down a 40-foot-tall water slide, and explore a nature trail. The centre also features a free-flight bird aviary and a Butterfly Garden, adding to the variety of wildlife encounters available. For those interested in the detailed workings of turtle conservation, the centre offers educational programs and the chance to participate in turtle releases, giving a hands-on conservation work experience.

  • National Gallery of the Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman Transportation Tips

Rental cars.

Renting a car is recommended for exploring the island at your leisure. Rental companies are conveniently located near the airport, and obtaining a Temporary Driver’s Permit is straightforward. Walking or taking the public bus may be preferred alternatives for those staying along Seven Mile Beach. Keep in mind that driving is on the left in the Cayman Islands.

Generally, the answer is yes. Opting for a rental car is easy, and we recommend them for most of our guests. Having the option to drive to the grocery store or for dining at one of the island’s many restaurants is a handy and cost-effective way to get around and explore the island. Many companies will also deliver a car to your villa should you decide to rent a vehicle part of the way thru your vacation for a fee, which is a great alternative if you want to do some additional exploring.

Taxis and Rideshare

Taxis, though convenient, can be pricey. The CI:GO app provides fare estimates to help manage costs. Island Ride, a local rideshare app, offers an alternative but can be more expensive than traditional taxis.

  • Local Buses

Local buses are an affordable option for getting around. They cover most of the island and are a practical choice for travellers on a budget, though they can be crowded during peak times.

The passport being carried to Grand Cayman must also have at least one blank page to account for an international entry stamp.

Take a Photograph

Before you board a plane to head to Grand Cayman, also take time to snap a quick picture of your passport on your smartphone.

  • This is a good backup to have in case you were to lose your document while traveling and need to work on getting another one issued through a consulate while you are in Grand Cayman.

The legendary white sands of Seven Mile Beach put the Cayman Islands firmly on the map as a beach destination, chosen by Travel + Leisure editors as one of the  best places to travel in 2023 . However, beaches are just the start in Grand Cayman, an island increasingly known for everything from its  budding art scene  to its foodie bona fides that extend beyond the Caribbean.

Home to the annual  Cayman Cookout  at  The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman , the island is considered the culinary capital of the Caribbean. "It earns the title. Grand Cayman is small enough that all the chefs know each other and can collaborate. It makes for great synergy," says Sandy Tuason, the executive chef at  The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa .

Innovation from Grand Cayman's tastemakers continues beyond the food. Several new, elevated cocktail bars, with Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa's  Library by the Sea  at the helm, are transforming the island into a full-blown mixology destination.

Refurbished beachside accommodations and new, stylish boutique properties like  Palm Heights  add a healthy dose of style to the island. With one of the most extensive flight lifts in the Caribbean, Grand Cayman looks more accessible and appealing than ever.

Best Hotels & Resorts

The westin grand cayman seven mile beach resort & spa.

The largest pool in Grand Cayman and the longest stretch of white sand on Seven Mile Beach make  The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa  one of the most impressive resorts on the island. Extensive health, wellness, and activities offerings, plus a kids club, the Hibiscus Spa, and innovative dining options like Woto are highlights.

Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa

Voted one of our reader's favorite resort hotels in the Caribbean  in 2020 by T+L readers, the  Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa  sits on the heart of Seven Mile Beach. This 264-room property   also boasts the   impressive Library by the Sea cocktail bar and Mexican street food-inspired beach eatery Coccoloba, which warrant a visit even among travelers staying elsewhere.

The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman

Home to the largest luxury suite in the Caribbean,  The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman  shines after an extensive refurbishment in 2021. "It sits along the Seven Mile Beach so the stunning beach is conveniently accessible," says Susmita Baral, T+L's travel editor. "While guests should leave the property and explore the island, you could stay on-site the entire time and have a great time."

The resort's  Cayman Cookout  festivities every January are a must for foodies, though the tasting menus at Blue by Eric Ripert make the resort a culinary destination year round. "Guests at the Cayman Cookout can experience great food and famous chefs, but it's really about making memories," Marc Langevin, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman tells T+L at the 2024 Cayman Cookout. "We hope to create a myriad of experiences — a moment and memories — that they'll remember when they go home."

Palm Heights

Opened in October 2019,  Palm Heights  is a stylish boutique property and one of the newest resorts in Grand Cayman. As  Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon recently reported for T+L , Palm Heights is "a haven for creative types — and those who want to be near them — who crave a bit of visual stimulation with their relaxing resort vibes." With just 52 rooms and suites, it offers a refreshing boutique experience amidst nearby mega-resorts.

Stingray City

A short cruise takes visitors to a sand bar surrounded by crystal-clear waters to swim with giant yet gentle stingrays at  Stingray City . One of the most popular experiences in Grand Cayman, these excursions also offer optional snorkeling at colorful Coral Gardens.

Kittiwake Shipwreck

"Throw on a snorkel anywhere in Grand Cayman, and it's like National Geographic out there," says Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa's Jim Wrigley. However, one of the island's most unique dive sites is the  shipwreck of the USS Kittiwake , sunk in 2011. Turtles and tropical fish now populate the wreck, known for being easily accessible even for less-experienced divers.

National Gallery of the Cayman Islands

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is "the best place to discover Caymanian art and to understand its evolution,"  says Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon for T+L . It's just the start of numerous galleries and art exhibits for travelers looking to discover a burgeoning art scene on the island.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

Visit Grand Cayman's impressive  botanical gardens  to see all the richness of the island's flora, including species of orchids you won't find anywhere else on the planet. The park also welcomes visitors to its conservation facility for the island's endemic blue iguanas.

Library by the Sea

Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa's  Library by the Sea  serves a curated collection of literary-inspired cocktails that offer "a slice of time and history with each sip," says the resort's beverage manager Jim Wrigley. Highlights include a glowing blue  Dune -inspired drink and a Hemingway daiquiri made using 1932 Bacardí rum, just like the author would have had at El Floridita in Havana. Drinks are "served" with first-edition and vintage copies of the tomes that inspired their creation.

Located in the shopping and entertainment hub of Camana Bay,  Next Door  is a new cocktail bar offering some of the most innovative drink creations on the island. A commitment to using sustainable ingredients and frequent live music events have made it one of the island's best happy hour spots.

Blue by Eric Ripert

The Caribbean's only AAA Five-Diamond restaurant,  Blue by Eric Ripert  at the Ritz-Carlton offers tasting menus highlighting local seafood, making it the undisputed fine dining star of Grand Cayman. "Blue by Eric Ripert created the dining scene in the Cayman Islands, Langevin tells T+L. "It's the flagship restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton and elevates the dining experience on the island."

Ms. Piper's Kitchen + Garden

Patterned after a bohemian backyard oasis, Ms. Piper's Kitchen + Garden might just be the coolest place to eat in Grand Cayman. The retro 70's vibe woven into every detail and international-inspired menu are refreshing and unique.

As Grand Cayman's first dedicated poke, sushi, and ceviche restaurant, The Westin's  Woto  has quickly become a favorite dining destination. Chefs trained in Japan make dishes authentic, while locally-sourced ingredients root them in Caribbean flavors.

Peppers Bar & Grill

Tastemakers, foodies, and chefs across the island all recommend beachfront  Peppers Bar & Grill  as one of the best local restaurants in Grand Cayman. "The jerk chicken, rice, and peas are the best on the island," says Wrigley.

Coccoloba  at Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa is Seven Mile Beach's elevated beach bar experience. The Mexican street food-inspired menu offers everything from fresh-catch tostadas to churros and an incredible piña colada.

Grand Cayman enjoys warm, tropical weather year round, with temperatures hovering around the 80s. Wet weather and tropical storms are possible during the Atlantic hurricane season between June and November.

Travel high season falls from December through April. While prices are the highest and beaches the busiest, consistently mild weather and sunny skies make these months one of the best times to visit the island. For a sweet spot combining lower prices, fewer tourists, and nice weather, the late spring months of April, May, and June are another great time to visit Grand Cayman.

Cayman Cookout is held annually in mid-January and is worth planning your trip around. The event brings celebrity chefs to the forefront with cooking demos, wine tastings, curated dinners, and an array of exclusive activities. (In 2024, guests could go deep sea fishing with chef Emeril Lagasse and take a private jet to Jamaica's GoldenEye resort with chef Eric Ripert and the CEO of New Zealand-based winery Craggy Range.)

Visit in early May for  Cayman Carnival Batabano . Batabano isn't as over-the-top as the carnival celebrations of some Caribbean neighbors, but it’s a fantastic time to experience Caymanian food, music, and dance traditions.

Grand Cayman is one of the most accessible Caribbean islands for North American travelers. Numerous airlines offer frequent direct flights to Grand Cayman's Owen Roberts International Airport from cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and others. Miami, just under two hours away, is a gateway city to the Cayman Islands, with up to four daily direct flights to Grand Cayman during the high travel season.

Cayman Airways  offers small daily inter-island flights between Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. While there is no public ferry service between the islands like you might find in other Caribbean destinations, travelers can also choose private boat charters, which are relatively affordable.

Many visitors also arrive in Grand Cayman by cruise ship at the port in the capital city of George Town. The cruise port allows for up to four ships to anchor at once; any additional ships remain in harbor. Passengers are tendered to shore and arrive at one of three terminals.

Seven Mile Beach

Nestled along the white sands of one of the  most beautiful beaches in the world  is the indisputable center of the action in Grand Cayman. The Seven Mile Beach area is home to Grand Cayman's buzziest resorts, bars, and restaurants, all within short walking distance of each other.

Just a stone's throw from Seven Mile Beach is the  Camana Bay  area. Jump on a catamaran cruise from the harbor or explore the bustling Town Centre, which features frequent events and a Wednesday farmers and artisan market from 12:00 - 7:00 p.m. This modern neighborhood has lots of shopping and some of the island's best eateries and bars, including Next Door and chef-favorite  Agua .

Kick back and relax on the breezy white-sand beach at Rum Point for a quintessentially Caribbean escape from the island's built-up resort area. Rum Point's Wreck Bar holds the distinction for creating the iconic Caymanian cocktail known as the mudslide. While the recipe differs from many classically Caribbean beverages - think vodka, Kahlua, Bailey's, and cinnamon — it's an island classic.

Head east for the antithesis of the built-up Seven Mile Beach area. Weekend farmers' markets and more remote beaches are favorites. "East End is more of a trek, but the local food here is worth it. You'll find food shacks where you just walk up and receive a plate of delicious food from grandma in the back who has been doing this for ages," says Wrigley.

Marc Guitard/Getty Images

With so many of the best resorts, bars, and restaurants in Grand Cayman clustered along Seven Mile Beach, booking a rental car is only a necessity for travelers looking to explore Rum Point or the island's East End. The airport is the best place to rent a car, with a number of large companies here. Remember that cars drive on the left side of the road in the Cayman Islands, though you can find cars with the steering wheel on either side of the vehicle.

Taxis tend to be the best transportation option for most travelers in Grand Cayman, though they can be comparatively expensive. Download  CI:GO , an app the Cayman Islands government created to calculate taxi fares between locations, which will estimate your fare in USD and Cayman Islands Dollars (KYD).

Grand Cayman doesn't have the ridesharing companies most visitors will recognize from home. The local app  Island Ride  is an alternative, though many travelers tend to stick with taxis, as ridesharing can be even more expensive than a standard taxi.

Local Buses

Mini-buses run on predetermined routes around the island and cost just a few dollars per trip, though they tend to get crowded and won't stop if they're already full. Catch a bus at a stop along the route or by flagging one down as it passes. More information on routes and schedules is available on the  Public Transportation Unit website .

In order to make sure that any special requirements you may have are met, please let us know at least 24 hours before your flight if we can be of any special assistance.

    Allergy sufferers

We are sensitive to the concerns of allergy sufferers, and we understand that some of our customers may not wish to be seated too close to a cat or small dog during their flight. For this reason, we ask that, if you are an allergy sufferer, you advise Cayman Airways Reservations as well as the check-in agent or gate agent prior to your flight departure to ensure you are not next to a customer travelling with a pet. We will make reasonable efforts to move you or the pet and pet owner.

    Service Dogs

Seeing eye dogs, hearing dogs and service dogs will all be carried free of charge when assisting a passenger. The passenger however must provide all documents required for the transportation of the animal such as a valid passport or certificate which identifies the dog as a seeing eye dog, hearing dog and service dog and an official health certificate from country of origin and one from country of destination. The dog will need to have a collar which identifies the dog accordingly and it must be harnessed at all times. Although the dogs are allowed in the passenger cabin they must always be at their master’s feet and are not allowed to occupy a seat.

Cayman Airways is committed to making travel accessible to everyone. To ensure we understand and meet your specific accessibility needs please complete  The Travellers with Disabilities form .
