Spraying in the cabin

The process of disinsection is required by WHO (World Health Organisation) and local health authorities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, e.g. Malaria.

On our Grenada route, we spray the inside of the aircraft with insecticides, which is recommended under the WHO based on their safety and effectiveness.

The spray we use onboard is Phenothrin (1R-trans phenothrin), which dissipates within a few minutes after being sprayed in the cabin.

Our cabin crew will make an onboard announcement when the spraying of insecticides is about to take place. We encourage customers to use this opportunity to cover their nose, eyes and mouth if they wish to do so.

Grand Anse Beach, Grenada

Grenada travel advice

Practical information.

English is the official language of Grenada, though most people also speak one of two creole languages, one based on English and the other on French.

Both creoles also draw on African and Indian influences, reflecting Grenada's rich cultural heritage.

Avid foodies will find plenty of choice in Grenada, from gourmet dining to rustic local fare. The island is famous for its spices, and you'll find nutmeg used to flavor just about everything, including deliciously fragrant nutmeg ice cream.

The national dish, oil down, is a stew consisting of salted meat, breadfruit, vegetables and dumplings steamed in coconut milk, while roti, a type of wrap filled with curried meat or vegetables, is a popular snack.

The island has also become known in recent years for its production of organic cocoa, led by the pioneering Grenada Chocolate Company.

There are several rum distilleries on the island, and some of the rums produced on the island are so potent that it's illegal to transport them on a plane.

Tipping in Grenada is discretionary and should reflect the service you have received, however a service charge of 18% is typically added to your bill in hotels and restaurants. If no service charge is added, a 10% tip is generally expected.

The currency of Grenada is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$ or XCD), which is pegged to the US dollar. Notes are in denominations of EC$100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of EC$2 and EC$1, and 25, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.

US dollars are widely accepted on the island, though you will usually be given change in EC dollars, and at a less favorable exchange rate.

Credit cards are widely accepted, and if taking travelers' checks we recommend taking them in US dollars.

Communications

Grenada has a good telecommunications infrastructure, with excellent mobile coverage in St George's and the main tourist areas where high speed internet is also widely available and Wi-Fi hotspots common.

The phone code for Grenada is 473.

Suggested clothing and other items

Grenada is in the tropics, so cool casual cotton clothing is recommended, and if you're planning on dining in some of the more formal restaurants, men should pack a shirt, tie and jacket, and women a smart dress.

It does tend to get cooler at night, so it's also worth popping a jumper or wrap into your suitcase.

Public holidays

Grenada's colorful Carnival takes place in July and August, and the final two days of the festivities, which fall on the second Monday and Tuesday of August, are both public holidays.

  • January 1st - New Year's Day
  • February 7th - Independence Day
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • Whit Monday (50 days after Easter)
  • Corpus Christi (Thursday of the week following Whit Monday)
  • May 1st - Labour Day
  • Final 2 Days of Carnival - July/August
  • August 3rd - Emancipation Day
  • October 25th - Thanksgiving Day *
  • December 25th - Christmas Day
  • December 26th - Boxing Day

* Thanksgiving Day in Grenada commemorates the US invasion of 1983 and the removal of the military government.

Is it safe to travel to Iceland? Volcano erupts again, forcing UK Foreign Office to issue advice

A volcanic eruption in south-west Iceland has triggered the evacuation of the country’s biggest attraction, the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.

The eruption began in the early afternoon on Wednesday (May 29) following several earthquakes north of Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people that was also evacuated.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said lava shot about 50 metres (165 feet) into the sky from a fissure about one kilometre (1,100 yards) long.

The Blue Lagoon spa was evacuated before the volcano erupted.

To prevent further damage, man-made barriers have been built to steer lava away from infrastructure including the Svartsengi geothermal power plant, the spa, and Grindavik.

The latest eruption was the fifth in the Reykjanes peninsula since December 2023.

It came after scientists warned eruptions could happen continually in the peninsula for decades or centuries.

Until March 2021, the peninsula had not experienced an eruption for eight centuries.

Iceland has 33 active volcano systems, the highest number in Europe.

Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Euronews reported that despite concerns over how the eruption will affect travel, nearby Keflavik Airport remained operational on Thursday. Icelandic airport operator ISAVIA advises passengers to monitor flight information  here .

The capital Reykjavik and the rest of Iceland are not affected.

Travellers are advised to stay away from Grindavik.

The Blue Lagoon has been closed.

“Due to a volcanic eruption that commenced in Sundhnúksgígar on May 29, we took the precautionary measure of evacuating and temporarily closing all our operational units,” the attraction’s website said . “We have made the decision to extend the closure until May 31, at which time the situation will be reassessed.”

It said all customers with bookings for affected dates would be contacted.

What has the UK’s Foreign Office said?

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has not listed Iceland as a country Britons should avoid.

However, it said: “Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are common in Iceland. Recently there has been a series of volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula in south-west Iceland, the latest on 29 May. These have affected the town of Grindavik and the area to the north of it.

“Stay away from this area. All roads to Grindavik and the surrounding area are closed.

“The likelihood of further eruptions in this location remains high. Check local media for updates and follow the Iceland authorities’ advice on travel to the area”

It advised prospective travellers to check the following websites: Icelandic Met Office , Safe Travel Iceland , and the Almannavarnir page on X (formerly Twitter) .

Is the volcano in Iceland still erupting?

After the initial eruption, volcanic activity was still ongoing at the time of writing.

Foreign Office issues warning to Brits if you're going to Spain on holiday

Foreign Office issues warning to Brits if you're going to Spain on holiday

One that will matter to a big chunk of people travelling from the uk to spain.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

The UK government has issued a warning when it comes to Brits heading overseas to Spain. And it's one that could cost you dearly if you don't pay attention.

Changes in official government advice if you're heading to Spain were published today (29 May) by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

The Foreign Office regularly reviews official government advice when it comes to Brits heading to every corner of the globe. This includes the likes of Australia .

And it is not the first piece of updated advice the Foreign Office has put out there this year about Spain , with a fresh passport warning issued just weeks ago .

Official guidance is updated often and can be relatively minor. But it also includes significant updates regarding warnings and insurance problems.

Entry requirements are also kept up to date, so it's pretty important to check if you're not sure.

A crowded Spanish beach (Getty Stock Images)

Updated travel advice for Spain

Today, the Foreign Office updated its safety and security information when it comes to Brits heading to Spain .

It's not the first warning issued for Spanish travel in recent weeks, with massive rule changes also brought in that massively alters why some people head abroad in the first place.

The new update concerns car safety requirements that if not obeyed, can get you in trouble with the law.

In particular, it concerns car child safety requirements.

What does it say?

"Seatbelts are compulsory for all passengers in the front and back seats," the Foreign Office writes.

"Children under 1.35m in height must use an approved child safety seat secured on the back seat.

"Children are only permitted to travel in the front seat of the car if the rear seats are already occupied by other children or if the vehicle does not have rear seats."

Obey the rules when it comes to driving with kids (Getty Stock Images)

There's also advice on what you have to do if you're hiring a motor .

It says: "Car hire agencies can provide child seats, so let them know you need one when you reserve the car.

"Incorrect installation of a child seat or not wearing a seatbelt can be considered a serious offence and met with fines.

"It is illegal to use a mobile phone when driving, even if you have pulled over to the side of the road. You must be completely away from the road.

"Using an earpiece is also illegal. Only completely hands-free units are allowed."

In Spain, the police can give you on-the-spot fines for a variety of driving offences including speeding. If you accept the fine and pay within 20 days, it will be reduced by 50%.
