Bass Fishing Boat Charter in Falmouth Bay
Enjoy half a day fishing for Bass in Falmouth Bay onboard our 1979 Plymouth Pilot 18′ cove boat
All trips depart from the Helford River and the boat is licensed to take our skipper and up to three people fishing.
The best bass fishing is enjoyed from September to December.
We primarily fish for bass using lures but we also use live mackerel and sandeels on occasion depending on the tides and conditions and can also cater for experienced fly fishers looking to target bass on the fly.
Half day fishing trips (typically 8am-1pm and 2pm-7pm) ensure we cover the best of the tide although exact times will vary depending on tides and weather conditions on the day.
The whole boat skippered charter for half a day is £300 and includes all fishing tackle, experienced fisherman/skipper, fuel, bait if required and upto three guests.
All bass caught that are of a legal size may be kept or returned if you prefer to catch and release.
We fish all along the coastline from the mouth of the Helford estuary and also on the famous Manacles reef.

Things to do on the Helford
The Helford really does have it all: secluded creeks and fishing coves, mile upon mile of public footpaths for stomping, historic homes and gardens to wander, brilliant places to eat and drink, and lovely beaches for swimming and watersports. If you’re planning a trip to the area, look no further — here’s our guide to things to do on the Helford.
Woodland wanders.
The Helford was made for walking: ancient woodlands, quiet fishing coves, beautiful views — and plenty of good watering holes to stop off at for lunch or an end of walk pint. There are countless routes that crisscross both sides of the river (and a 5-minute ferry ride between Helford Passage on the north and Helford on the south means you can explore both sides on a single walk). A particular favourite is the four-mile Helford and Frenchman’s Creek Circular Walk , which starts in the pretty thatched village of Helford and explores woodland, creeks and farmland with beautiful waterside views. There are a number of great pubs and cafes along the route, including the brilliant Shipwrights Arms in Helford and the Holy Mackerel cafe in Helford.
Feeling peckish? See our round-up of places to eat on the Helford , from restaurants and pubs to cafes and delis.
Sub-tropical paradise
The National Trust gardens on the banks of the Helford, Glendurgan Gardens is a lush, tropical valley that meanders down to the little fishing cove of Durgan. In spring, come for the carpets of bluebells and primroses; in summer for the cool and tranquil woodland glades, and ice cream on the beach. There’s a second hand bookshop on site, plants for sale and a 180-year old maze — a highlight of any trip here (and a great opportunity to lose the children for an hour or so while you soak up the valley views).
Taking full advantage of south Cornwall’s sub-tropical climate, the beautiful 26-acre Trebah Gardens is packed with wild and wonderful flora and fauna, including 100-year old rhododendrons, giant gunneras (with two-metre-long leaves) and an entire valley of hydrangeas. Four miles of paths and passages lead down to the garden’s private beach — thousands of soldiers departed from here for the D-Day landings in 1944. The award-winning Trebah Kitchen cafe, housed in the stylish and airy cafe, champions local, seasonal food. Plenty of fun for children too with wooden forts, rope swings and an aerial slide.
The Cornish Seal Sanctuary
The small, quiet village of Gweek, on the shores of the Helford, isn’t the sort of place you’d expect to find the country’s largest seal sanctuary. Roughly 60 orphaned and injured seals are brought here to the Seal Sanctuary on the Helford each season, and are cared for by a dedicated team before being released back into the wild. You’ll need a few hours to wander around the various pools and enclosures to see seals, penguins and sea lions, and the hospital to catch a glimpse of the newly rescued pups. There are nature trails (children get a prize at the end), a team of brilliant, informative staff who hold interesting talks about the sanctuary and its inhabitants throughout the day, and a good cafe serving vegan food.
Messing about on the river
The hour-and-a-half trips with Helford River Cruises are a great way to explore the secluded creeks that line the Helford. Putter down the river, ogle at the waterside mansions with grounds that stretch to the river, past the gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan. Spot herons, little egrets, kingfishers, cormorants. The incredibly jolly Roger at the helm is a font of knowledge on all things Helford — this is a history lesson and wildlife-watching trip in one! And it’s just as fun for children — those on best behaviour may even be given the chance to steer the boat.
A grand estate
The 1000-acre Trelowarren Estate on the Lizard peninsula near the Helford , with its impressive manor house, has been the seat of the Vyvyans — a prominent Cornish family — since the 15th century. A number of woodland walks, ranging from between one and five miles, loop around the grounds, with Victorian folly, Iron Age Hill Fort and 18th-century garden to spy along the way. At the heart of the estate in the old courtyard is the New Yard Restaurant and the Pantry cafe , walled kitchen garden and art gallery displaying local work from a cooperative of Lizard-based artists.
Discover more places to eat and drink on the Lizard Peninsula
The Helford from the water
Soak up the Helford from the water with south Cornwall-based Koru Kayaking , who run guided kayak and paddleboarding trips from a private beach near Mawnan Smith. The two-hour trips are a great introduction to the area: paddle past oyster farms and the ancient oak woodlands that line the Helford and down Frenchman’s Creek, made infamous by Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name. Fantastic wildlife (sometimes a seal might pop up to say hello), shipwrecks, hidden creeks, and the chance for a dip on sunny days.
If you’re thinking of planning a trip to the Helford, take a look at our collection of stylish Helford retreats , from beautiful farmhouses and barns to chic holiday homes just moments from the water.

The Helford
Where woodland and water combine..
This beautiful estuary on the west side of Falmouth Bay is a haven for sailors, gardeners and lovers of the quieter side of Cornwall.
From its wide mouth to the muddy creeks upstream, the Helford is loved by all who know it. Sailors take shelter in the entrance, moor up and have a run ashore to one of the waterside pubs.
On the northside of the estuary, close to Helford Passage, are the adjacent gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan. Both offer valleys full of sub-tropical plants dipping down to the water’s edge. The same can be said of the grounds of Budock Vean Hotel, which also has a golf course.
The main areas of settlement alongside the river are Gweek, Port Navas, Helford village, Helford Passage and Durgan. Helford and Helford Passage are linked by a passenger ferry that has existed for over 300 years. Both villages have popular pubs with views of the water where you can wait for the ferry to arrive.
For those who prefer the wilder side of things, there are many footpaths in the area giving access to some wonderful quieter spots. The South West Coast Path crosses via the ferry at Helford on its way to Falmouth or the Lizard and book lovers can wander through the woods to Frenchman's Creek, immortalised by Daphne Du Maurier.
The further you go up stream, the more the woods close in, access is restricted to the water until you get to Gweek where the Seal Sanctuary is a popular all year round visitor attraction.
Things to do in and around the Helford
South of the Helford Walk
Escape the crowds on this walk along wooded creeks
Helford Passage Beach
The Helford is one of the most picturesque estuaries in Cornwall and this beach is situated in a naturally beautiful area favoured by walkers, wildlife fans and boat lovers alike.
Explore the Helford
The Helford River, to the south of Falmouth, is an idylic mixture of isolated woodland, secluded creeks, rich farmland and semi-tropical gardens.
Plan your trip
Everything you need to know to plan your perfect trip to the Helford
Follow the M5 to Exeter, and then take the A30. Follow signs to Truro and then Falmouth. On the outskirts of Falmouth, head for Mabe Burnthouse and then follow signs to Helford Passage.
If you wish to visit the southern side of the estuary, it is best to head for Helston and follow the main road past RNAS Culdrose before turning onto the B3293 and winding your way through narrow lanes.
National Express serves Falmouth from destinations throughout the UK. From here the No35 bus serves Helford Passage and the gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan (April 2023)
From Helston the No33 bus serves the villages along the south side of the estuary. (April 2023)
The nearest railway station is Falmouth from where you can catch a bus to Helford Passage.
Yes, there are several small beaches where you can enter the water (which is often a little warmer than the nearby sea), just be aware of boats and other users of the river.
The South West Coast Path runs from the Helford Passage towards Falmouth and from the Porthoustock around to Helford on the south side of the estuary. A ferry takes you across.
There's also a permissive footpath alongside the iconic Frenchman's Creek, made famous by Daphne du Maurier's classic novel.
Frenchman's Creek is up river from the village of Helford on the south side of the estuary. It can only be reached on foot or by kayak.
It became known after Daphne Du Maurier published her novel of the same name in 1941. The story is set during the reign of Charles II and tells the story of a love affair between Dona, Lady St. Columb, and a French pirate who is hiding out in her husbands ruined house on the creek.
The Helford lies to the south of Falmouth and forms the northern border of the Lizard Peninsular. The north side is the easiest to access with good roads coming out of Falmouth passing the gardens of Glendurgan and Trebah before dropping down to Helford Passage.
The southside requires navigating narrow lanes through wooded valleys, but you are rewarded by quieter locations.
Discover your Cornwall

Fishing boats based in the Helford work mainly off the Lizard or work crab and lobster pots in Falmouth Bay.
The Helford is famous for its shellfish, particularly oysters which are still fattened by the Duchy Oyster Farm at Port Navas. Also there is a tradition of trigging, when families gather on Good Friday to collect cockles and picnic.
This is an important commercial fish with a retail value equivalent to salmon. Recent highly efficient fishing methods have seriously reduced the bass stock around the British coast. The very young bass come into estuaries for 2+ years to feed where the water is warmer and the food supply good before returning to the sea. These Nursery Areas now receive special protection through restrictions on fishing and volunteers from the HMCG Group have been involved with recording the presence and growth of bass juveniles over a number of years.
The collection of oysters for food was seen from the coastal Celtic settlements 3rd Century BC. Phoenician traders and Roman settlers were familiar with oysters from their Mediterranean use and Turkish pirates were reputed to target Cornish oysters!
Helford River beds came under private ownership through church lands and royalty. From 1917 to 2005 the Hodges family leased the rights from the Duchy of Cornwall.
Native Oyster brood or halfware is brought in from the Fal and Solent under strict conditions to restrict the spread of disease. It is then left to mature on the beds in the River. Fishing is carried out using iron—frame dredges that can collect up to 100 oysters each pull. The work has changed little over the years; it’s hard and much is still done by hand.
The collection of Helford oysters starts in August ready for the start of the season which runs from 1 September to mid-May. (mainly months with an ‘R’ in them). Any oysters collected below marketable size are returned to the River to grow on. The remainder, above 50/55 gms in weight, are sorted, graded and rested on the foreshore at Port Navas. Next they are cleansed for at least 42 hours in tanks of cool water which is circulated under ultra violet rays.
They are eaten raw, so hygiene precautions are stringently controlled. The official ‘paper trail’ can trace every oyster on sale right back to its source!
Helford oysters are usually sent to London restaurants or mainland Europe whilst almost all of those from the Fal go to France.
Accidental pollution of the water is an ever-present and serious threat to this long-established industry and everyone who uses the river and its shores needs to be extra careful with fuels, sewage and all chemicals.
Wildlife Watch in Spring
The Helford is a hive of activity in the Spring time with an abundance of birdlife and fish to look out for.
There’s rumours that basking sharks are on their way to Falmouth Bay so we might be lucky and get a glimpse from the mouth of the river. At this time if the year the river is so quiet and so dolphins have swum up the river and seals, meanwhile the creeks are a hive of activity with nesting birdlife.
Here’s what you might see this Spring on the Helford River and creeks:
Herons – with a massive wing span of upto 195cm!!! Whilst their feathers are grey, their beaks (yellow, black and red) and legs (yellow, pink and brown legs) are brightly coloured. Able to eat small mammals and fish the Helford with it’s farmland and waterways is the perfect environment for the grey heron. Something to look out for is herony on the Helford on Polwheveral Creek, right next to where the oyster farm used to be, but make sure you keep your distance especially with noisy engines so you don’t disturb the nesting birds.
Herons and Little egrets on Frenchman’s Creek
Little Egrets
Little Egrets – their bright white feathers they first came in significant numbers to the UK from 1989. Also lovers of farmland and marine areas the Helford is a perfect spot for them and whilst some migrate, some will stay here all year round. With manificent white plumage, there’s a few varieties of egret that can be found on the Helford clustering together in the ancient oak trees that line the Helford River and creeks.
Kingfishers – we rarely see these in the Spring time. They are about, but are a much more common sighting in the Autumn? Perhaps too busy nesting in the river banks to be flying up and down the creeks showing off their bright blue and russet wings.
Cormorants – Is it a Cormorant or a shag? Both black birds who like to swoop down and swim under water to catch fish. Both have long necks but shags are smaller and have a steep forehead. both can be spotted on the Helford hanging out on the buoys with wings spread drying them out before their next fishing dive. They can dive up to 45 metres!
Curlews – you’ll hear their haunting cry before you see them as their brown speckled feathered keep them well camouflaged. They have amazing long curved beaks too.
Common Seal
Then there’s seals – whilst not resident in the Helford those cheeky, curious grey seals can often be found following a fish or fishing boat up or even following us so keep your eyes peeled!
We have trips available 6 days a week Monday- Saturday with Private Charters available too!
Come and see what’s about this Spring – Cruise times available here.

Britain’s finest ferry trips
There are numerous ways to explore our country by boat, from a tranquil meander across a river estuary to a jaunt along the coast
There’s a sense of adventure in boarding a boat. Boats can get to places – hidden coves, meandering marshlands – that other means of transport cannot.
Before motorised transport, sailing boats and, later, steam ships provided the quickest way to travel between coastal communities in the UK (as well as to transport goods around the country)
As seaside resorts grew in the 19 th century, pleasure steamers became a popular diversion. In the 1820s, steam packet companies ran excursions from Liverpool to the resorts of north Wales, while Southampton’s Royal Pier was opened in 1833 to cater to steamboats offering trips to the Isle of Wight or along the Hampshire coast.
Ferries, too, have a long history of offering the speediest means to explore Britain’s coastline. The Helford River crossing, near Falmouth, in Cornwall , for example, is mentioned in the Domesday Book.
If you’re looking for a way to link coastal walks or a trip away from the crowds, we’ve picked a few of the best ferry routes to consider.
Plymouth to Cawsand, Kingsand and Rame peninsular, Devon
The Cawsand Ferry takes you across the border – and, some might argue, back in time – from busy Plymouth in Devon , with its boat-packed harbour, to the quiet former fishing villages of Cawsand and Kingsand in Cornwall .
Both lie a half-hour ferry ride across Plymouth Sound and offer small shingle-and-sand beaches, rockpools and simple facilities. Exploring their narrow twisty lanes and wooded hill slopes, you can imagine the skulduggery that might have gone on in the 18 th and 19 th centuries when smugglers would frequent these shores. Both Cawsand and Kingsand are good starting points for a walk, either to explore the gardens and parkland of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, or, along the South West Coast Path around Penlee Point and Rame Head with their commanding views across Plymouth Sound and the Channel.
Fancy an overnight stay? Residence One , Plymouth (01752 262318; bistrotpierre.co.uk ) has doubles from £146, including breakfast.
Cawsand Ferry (01752 253153; plymouthboattrips.co.uk ) operates from 29 th March to 31 st October from Plymouth to Cawsand and Kingsand and costs £6 for an adult single and £3 for a child.
Helford Passage, near Falmouth, to Helford village, Cornwall
Not many public transport services in Britain can truly declare to be ‘on demand’. But pop down to Helford Passage on the Helford River, in Cornwall, and the jolly red and white ferry boat will immediately whisk you across the water, tides permitting. If you arrive at Helford village on the southern riverbank, simply ‘open’ the bright yellow circular sign to show you’re waiting. A ferry of some sort has operated this mile-long crossing since at least the 11 th century, saving travellers a 40 minute diversion by car around the inlet.
This is the Cornish countryside of Daphne du Maurier; narrow lanes, ancient oak woodland and smugglers’ coves. The ferry, which takes foot-passengers and bicycles, leaves from below the Ferry Boat Inn in tiny Helford Passage and arrives, handily, close to the 16 th -century Shipwrights Arms in Helford. Both villages are full of thatched Cornish charm and there’s a tiny beach at Helford Passage. Both locations are on the South West Coast Path.
Located near Helford Passage, Budock Vean (01326 250288) has doubles from £198, including breakfast.
Helford Ferry (01326 250770; helfordriverboats.co.uk ) operates 1 st April to 31 st October from Helford Passage to Helford Village and costs £7/£9 (single/return) for an adult and £4/£6 for a child.
Glenelg to Skye, Scotland
“Speed bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing … Over the sea to Skye”. The 19 th century folk song probably didn’t have this extraordinary ferry in mind, yet it’s surely one of the best ways to arrive on the island. Turn off the main road to Kyle of Lochalsh – the traditional crossing point to Skye – at Shiel Bridge and follow the narrow road over Mam Ratagan, with its glimpses of Skye’s Cuillin Hills. Drive 11 miles to just north of tiny Glenelg on the shores of the Kylerhea Narrows and you’ve made it.
From here the MV Glenachulish, the world’s last manually operated turntable ferry, carries you across the narrow passage to Kylerhea on Skye. The ingenuity of the turntable, on which the cars sit, means the ferry can berth alongside the slipway whatever the tidal height and strength of current (strong, hereabouts). From Kylerhea, it’s a five mile drive up lonely Glen Arroch to the main road to Portree; better still, head south to enjoy the wildness of under-the-radar Sleat Peninsula.
Skye Ferry (01599 522700; skyeferry.co.uk ) operates 28 th March to mid-October from near Glenelg to Kylerhea and costs £20/£30 for a car (single/return) and £3/£5 for foot passengers.
Butley River Ferry, Suffolk
Among the marshlands and heathlands of the far reaches of east Suffolk , home to marsh harriers, waders and wildfowl, and where hamlets have names such as Shingle Street and Duck Corner, is possibly the smallest ferry boat in Europe. With a maximum capacity of four (or two adults and two bicycles), it is one of only two ferries in Britain reliant on human-power. The oarsman carries passengers across Butley River, which flows into the Alde and then out to sea around the southern tip of Orford Ness .
A ferry has operated here since the 14 th century, when the riverside farmland belonged to Butley Priory, until the 1930s. Revived in 1993 and run by volunteers, it provides a welcome service to walkers, cyclists and nature-lovers who enjoy the peace, the sightings of seals hauled on the riverbanks as well as the birdlife – and the welcome pubs in nearby Orford (with 12 th -century castle) and Chillesford.
Looking for somewhere to stay? Check out The Crown and Castle , Orford (01394 450205) has doubles from £140, including breakfast.
Butley Ferry (07913 672499; aldeandore.org ) operates on weekends and bank holidays from 30 th March to 13 th October across Butley river near Orford and costs £2.50 for an adult single and £1.50 for a child.
Seahouses to Holy Island, Northumberland
Holy Island, or Lindisfarne to give it its Celtic name, can be reached by causeway twice a day from the Northumbrian mainland when tides allow. But to get a real sense of its isolation – and one that its first Anglo-Saxon settlers, including St Aidan and St Cuthbert, would have experienced – arrive by boat. Billy Shiel’s boats have been operating out of Seahouses since 1918, and are well-known for their trips to the Farne Islands (of Grace Darling, puffins and seals fame).
In the warmer months, they also offer a four-and-a-half hour round trip to Holy Island. The route includes a tour around the Farnes, plus chances to spot porpoises and dolphins, before landing on Holy Island for a two-hour visit. Boats land at high tide, so you can experience the ‘cut off’ serenity of the island with its lofty castle, Norman Priory, small museum and cafes offering locally caught crab sandwiches.
Billy Shiel’s Boat Trips (01665 720308; farne-islands.com ) operates Easter holidays, and then May to October from Seahouses to Holy Island and costs £45 for an adult round trip and £25 for a child.
Bardsey Island, Wales
Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims on the boat trip to Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) two miles from the tip of the Llyn Peninsula in north-west Wales. Settled by Celtic Christians in the 6 th century, the remote island is one-and-a-half miles long by half-a-mile at its widest and was chosen by Augustinian Canons in the 13 th century (remains of St Mary’s Abbey can be seen) before a farming and fishing community took over.
Today it is still farmed but is perhaps better known for its protected wildlife status – a National Nature Reserve, among other things – with Manx shearwater, puffins, choughs, grey seals and dolphins to look out for. The 30-minute boat ride from Porth Meudwy near Aberdaron allows four hours to explore the island before the trip back. Looking for somewhere to stay? Porth Tocyn (01758 713303) in Abersoch has doubles from £160.
Bardsey Boat Trips (07971 769895; bardseyboattrips.com ) operates from March until October, from Porth Meudwy, near Aberdaron, to Bardsey Island and costs £50 for an adult round trip and £25 for a child.
Brightlingsea to East Mersea and Point Clear, Essex
Brightlingsea , around the corner from Essex’s brassy Clacton-on-Sea and down river of Roman Colchester, may not be on your summer holiday bucket-list, but it works its charm hard. There’s a simple beach, a long row of jolly beach chalets and a surprisingly busy harbour of power-boats and yachts.
Among them, the 12-passenger foot-ferry zips around the mouth of the River Colne calling at Point Clear, with its walk along St Osyth sea wall and aircraft museum in a former Martello Tower, then across the estuary to East Mersea on Mersea Island . At the latter, you can enjoy the sandy beach at Cudmore Grove Country Park. It beats road traffic hands down: Brightlingsea to Point Clear is 20 miles, and three minutes by ferry; to Mersea Island is around 40 miles, but 10 minutes by ferry.
Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners Ferry (01206 302200; brightlingseaharbour.org ) operates 1 st April to 22 nd September, from Brightlingsea to Point Clear and East Mersea and costs £4.50 for an adult single and £3.50 for a child.
