You can watch American football pretty much anywhere with a TV; in the comfort of your own home, at a bar- or even live at a sports field ( imagine that!) . 

In fact, there’s nothing quite like watching a game live at a football stadium.

Home to the Washington Commanders, the FedEx Field has a rich history and offers more than just football!

If you have tickets ( or are considering purchasing tickets ) to an event coming up at FedEx Field, keep reading below for all you need to know about the stadium and its history- plus the best places to eat, drink, and party during your time in Washington D.C.!

FedEx Field: Key Facts

When the owner of the Redskins changed in 1999 to Daniel Snyder, he immediately got to work on making improvements to the stadium which had only been completed two years prior in 1997.

Millions of dollars were invested into the stadium improvements, such as replacing all metal rails with glass rails, so that sight lines of attendees would remain unobstructed! 

Other improvements included the sound system and the parking lot, which was completely restructured and rerouted so that there would be fewer traffic jams.

The stadium used to be the largest in the entire NFL, with 91,704 seats at its peak! 

Since 2010, however, many of those seats have been removed in order to create space for luxury suites and a party deck on the upper level.

According to the Washington Business Journal , the luxury suites are kitted out with restrooms, refrigerators, TVs, bar stools, viewing seats, and a lounge area!

To make it even more impressive, there are a total of 243 of these suites within a three-tier structure.

Many other events are held at the FedEx Field other than Commander’s games. You’ll find special events such as concerts, college football, and soccer games (amongst others) at the stadium.

Large restaurants are located inside each of the stadium’s end zones, so you can eat while you watch a game! 

Don’t be afraid of missing anything while you’re getting food, as each restaurant has an unobstructed view of the field.

As well as a wide variety of food, each restaurant is fully stocked with all sorts of different wine and beer selections so you can keep the good times rolling.

Don’t forget about the wide range of Commander’s souvenirs on offer for you to collect and admire as a proud fan. Remember to bring extra cash to the stadium when you come, as you might feel as if you’re missing out if you don’t!

You also may notice two different team names recurring within this article: The Redskins and the Commanders. Before you get confused – yes, they are the same team. 

Originally founded in 1932 as the Boston Braves, this NFL team changed names to the infamous Redskins in 1933 as they relocated to Washington.

In 2020 the team changed its name once again to the Washington Football Club, only to rebrand once again in 2022 as the Commanders. 

The brand new name chosen out of over 40,000 fan suggestions is an homage to Washington D.C.’s connection to the military.

You’ll find FedEx Field 5 miles east of the RFK Memorial Stadium in Summerfield, Maryland.

Make sure to do your research before you visit FedEx Field if you’re looking to make the most of your trip to the stadium, as there are so many awesome attractions and activities within close proximity.

There are multiple ways to get to FedEx Field, including the Metro, driving yourself, or booking through a rideshare app.

If you’re interested in using the Metro, the Morgan Boulevard Station is the closest station to the FedEx Field. 

Less than a mile from the stadium, this station is a great option if you didn’t want to park at the stadium itself.

Note: there is a Special Event Parking Fee at Morgan Boulevard of $15 from the time of kick-off through to 2 hours after the event has finished.

Traffic jams around the stadium have been called “legendary” by commenters on TripAdvisor, but if you’re willing to get to the stadium early (or to sit through the traffic) there are many different parking lots you can choose from.

Parking permits will set you back roughly $65 for stadium parking, however, so you may be better off taking the Metro if you want to save a bit of cash. 

Suddenly the $15 Special Event Parking Fee doesn’t seem so bad!

Keep in mind that traveling to the FedEx Field by bus is also an option. If you decide to take public transport, visit the WMATA website to plan your journey via either train or bus.

At the stadium, there are 17 individual, specialized parking lots to suit whichever parking needs you may have. There are specific parks for RVs, tailgaters, disabled, and other potential requirements.

Parking permits valid for one parking space must be bought if you wish to park in any of the lots on site. 

You can either purchase your parking permit in advance here , otherwise, there is accessible pay-on-site parking in the Gray Lot off Brightseat Road.

To get into each different lot at the stadium, make sure to take the correct designated road for that parking lot. 

If you happen to accidentally take the incorrect roadway, you will be turned around and asked to take the correct one instead!

After all, you don’t want to be getting confused and flustered trying to find your way when you’re surrounded by people and cars on the big day!

There couldn’t be a list of the best restaurants near FedEx Stadium without including legendary Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann’s own restaurant!

The restaurant was started over 35 years ago, as one of the first restaurant/bar combinations in the country. You’ll find an array of sports memorabilia inside, along with an enormous amount of TVs that can even be found in the bathroom. 

You won’t miss a second of the game while dining here! This restaurant is fantastic because it can cater to all sorts of dining needs. 

Are you in the mood for classic bar food? They’ve got you covered. Looking for something more luxurious like grilled Mahi Mahi or New Zealand lamb chops? Look no further!

No matter what the outcome of the game may be, you may get out of the stadium gates craving a drink and some good vibes. You definitely don’t have to go straight home, that’s for sure! 

There are many different locations open for business on game night, ready to keep your game spirit alive for a little while longer.

Madam’s Organ

With 25+ years of providing a great atmosphere for live, bluesy music, Madam’s Organ is definitely a bar to check out.

With eclectic decor and a devotion to helping you get your groove on, you’ll find live music 7 nights a week and an extensive menu offering delicious food, like Susie’s Chicken Tenders and Sebastian’s Meatloaf.

Nightclub 9:30 

Also known as the 9:30 Club , this star-studded venue is sure to amaze you with its talent and hospitality.

Many famous bands and names entertain at this club, so take a look at their ‘upcoming shows’ list and browse through all they have to offer. 

Music isn’t the only fantastic quality at this club either! There are plenty of incredible dishes on their menu, which includes vegetarian and vegan options. 

With four separate bars, you won’t find it difficult to get yourself the perfect cold beverage to celebrate – or mourn – the thrilling game you just saw at the FedEx Stadium.

The night doesn’t have to end when the game is over, and Nightclub 9:30 knows it! To keep you going with the party spirit even longer, they have a coffee bar offering caffeinated treats to keep you up and awake for all the action.

Bracket Room 

You may be the kind of person who prefers a more traditional ‘sports lounge’ type of deal after the game finishes. 

Who could blame you? They’re a great place to soak in even more of that great sports energy. 

The Bracket Room features a late-night menu that’s super popular on game nights, so be sure to check out their “World’s Best Tater Tots” if you’re feeling peckish! 

If you couldn’t make it to the game yourself, there are 35 TVs in total for you to view it within the lounge – so no excuses! 

With stylish décor and small, innovative plates to enjoy, there’s really no reason for you to not hit this spot on your way back from the FedEx Field.

The FedEx Stadium was made as a replacement for the Washington Redskins team, who previously played in the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. 

It wasn’t always named the FedEx Stadium, however, as when construction was completed in 1997 it was named the Jack Kent Cooke Stadium after the recently deceased owner of the team.

Jack Kent Cooke was the man who initially wanted to have this new stadium built, but unfortunately, he never made it to opening day. 

He passed away in April of 1997 and the stadium didn’t open until September of that same year.

One heartwarming fact about the stadium grounds themselves is that its name “Raljon” is a combination of Jack’s two sons Ralph and John. 

Jack Cooke was even able to register this new name with the United States Postal Service as a legal address for the zip code 20785 in Landover, Maryland.

Raljon continued to be a legal alternate address for the stadium grounds until 1999 when Daniel Snyder bought the Redskins team off the Cooke estate. The address for the stadium switched from Raljon to Landover.

A special exit was created off Interstate 495 named Arena Drive (Exit 16) for attendees to reach the stadium.

Also, in 1999 along with Snyder buying the Redskins, the naming rights for the stadium were sold to FedEx at the end of that year for around $7.6 million per annum.

Impressively, FedEx has sold out of all non-premium entry tickets for every single season in its existence.

There are an average of 160,000 Redskins fans on the waiting list for season tickets! That is a huge amount for a stadium that can presently only facilitate 71,000 seated fans.

The stadium used to hold far more people, over 91,000 in fact. Since 2010 however, there have been groups of several thousand seats removed. 

The removed seats in the upper endzone area are what made room for the party deck that is now used during matches.

Renovations are still constantly being made to the stadium, such as to the luxury suites, HD scoreboards, and other improvements.

Tickets for FedEx Stadium can be purchased off the Washington Commanders website through Ticketmaster here . Prices do fluctuate, so keep checking their page to make sure you get the best deal you can.

Alternatively, you can buy your tickets online directly through Ticketmaster here . You will be able to see all upcoming games and events being held at the venue.

If you don’t want to buy tickets online, they can also be purchased at the stadium in-person from the team’s ticket office. The office is located between Gate A and Gate H on the south side of the stadium.

FedEx Field offers tours every Monday to Friday at 11:00 am, however, they will try to accommodate if these times don’t work.

Tours run for 60-90 minutes, and will commence rain or shine- so make sure you bring something to keep you dry!

You won’t be able to check out the stadium on weekends though, or before or after any big stadium event. Tickets are $20 for adults, $13 for children aged 4-13, and free for kids 3 and under.

Make sure you book a tour as they’re run by appointment only, and you’ll need at least 20 paying adults or children in your group.

Making every game an event to remember.

FedExField: A visitor guide for your Washington Commanders game

Home to the Washington Commanders, FedExField isn’t actually in Washington (or the District of Columbia) at all! Located about 20 kilometres from downtown in Landover, Maryland, FedExField is one of the NFL’s trickier stadiums to get to, however there are ample parking and public transport options to get you ready for a big day at the football.

Built just before the turn of the millennium, FedExField was once the NFL’s largest stadium by capacity, but recent improvements to the venue has resulted in a reduced gameday capacity.

Loved by some and hated by others, FedExField features a number of interesting quirks, such as the “Domino Effect” and the “Party Deck”, so read on for your best guide to watching the Commanders in action.

Getting your tickets

Having planned your trip to nation’s capital, head to Sports Where I Am’s page for FedExField to see when the Washington Commanders might be playing while you’re in town. After you’ve chosen a game, it’s the hard part: deciding where to sit.

Where to sit at FedExField

Having once been the NFL’s biggest stadium in terms of seating capacity, there is no shortage of opinions when it comes to where to sit at FedExField. Built in a uniformed and rounded design, the stadium is basically “what you see is what you get”, and while there’s no roof or real protection from the elements, there are pockets of undercover seating if you’re concerned about the weather.

One thing to consider with outdoor stadiums is how the sun will behave throughout the afternoon. At FedExField in winter, the sun will stay low in the south and set to the west, so while the entire stadium will be bathed in sunshine at kickoff, it will affect those on the visitors’ side more as the afternoon goes on. 1

If you like being seated lower down, note that since the team owner Dan Snyder introduced the “Dream Seats” – an additional ring of first-row seats built at the same height as those behind them – a phenomenon called the Domino Effect often occurs. As people seated in the closest rows might not be able to get the best view of game due to those in the Dream Seats, they stand, forcing those behind them to stand… and so on! If you don’t like standing, the 100 section probably isn’t for you!

Be extra careful when booking seats in the 200 section , especially if you’re planning on sitting undercover. Many seats won’t be advertised as having a restricted view, but the support beams for the grandstand above are scattered around the 200 section and may be in your way if you’re seated too far back.

Our top picks? Any seat in the 300 section will deliver the best views, as these are both not too high and not too low and offer an excellent sideline view. If you’re not willing to part with too much cash, the Party Deck standing room sections are also a great way to enjoy a day at the football.

Getting to FedExField

Public transport

The good news is that Washington has an efficient and affordable public transport system, with daily fares topping out at around US$6. The bad news is that the trek to FedExField from downtown takes the better part of an hour – and that’s before the 20-minute, two kilometre walk from the metro station to the stadium itself.

The stadium itself is served by two nearby stations – Morgan Boulevard on the Blue and Silver Lines , and Landover on the Orange Line . Landover is three miles from the stadium, while Morgan Boulevard is just the one, so unless you’re staying somewhere on the Orange Line closer to Landover, it’s recommended that you jump on either the Blue or Silver line and make your way to Morgan Boulevard.

Parking at FedExField is an option if you’ve already got yourself a hire car, however the prices are some of the most expensive in the country – no doubt due to the stadium’s remote location and the average public transport connections.

You’re looking at around US$60 for a parking space which might still be a decent hike from the stadium. If you’re hell-bent on driving to the game, it might be worth looking for streetside parking a mile or so away – some people offer spaces in their private lots on game day for more reasonable rates.

Ridesharing

If you’re travelling in a group, ridesharing is not the worst option in terms of getting to FedExField. Being 18 kilometres from the downtown area of D.C., prices will start at around US$25 each way (not accounting for any surge prices).

However, it’s important to note that ridesharing prices may be astronomically higher after the game due to the increased demand of everyone trying to get home at once. If you’re willing to be patient (or willing to walk away from the crowds) to get a ride, you may avoid paying too much to get home.

Being in a remote location, the dining (and post-victory partying) options are limited at best, as FedExField isn’t located in a built-up urban area.

Having said that, fans can tailgate with the best of them, and considering their parking lots open five hours before kick-off (meaning 8am for a 1pm start), there’s going to be plenty of opportunity for you to get among the action and join a pre-game party.

As a foreigner, the best way to approach this is to walk around the lots (the RedZone lot is renowned for its tailgating) with a case of beer and a smile. Good-natured humour is appreciated if you’re supporting the away team, but if you follow Washington you shouldn’t have many problems. Failing anything else, just work the foreign accent and ‘free beer’ angle and you should be welcomed with open arms!

Watching a game at FedExField

FedExField is one of the NFL’s largest stadiums in terms of capacity, so the precinct will be buzzing before and after games. You’ll also find that travelling teams have decent crowd representation due to the transient nature of work in the capital city – many workers relocate from their home towns or states to come and work in government.

One thing to be wary about is discussing the team’s former name – the Redskins – and logo, which was a sensitive issue at the best of times. It’s best to probably avoid the topic while you’re at the game.

Concessions

As with most major stadiums around the United States, the food offering is pretty standard, though FedExField does feature two Ben’s Chili Bowl locations, a landmark Washington chain which serves excellent chili dogs and local hotdogs called “half smokes”.

FedExField also stocks beers from local Maryland brewery Flying Dog , which makes an excellent IPA called Snake Dog among its other offerings. Flying Dog is sold throughout the stadium and shouldn’t be hard to find. Keep an eye out for their cool can designs.

Are tickets still available?

Yes, but you’ll pay for them: For Saturday’s performance, Ticketmaster’s “ verified resale tickets ” include seats in the nosebleed sections for $286 to $500, while floor seats near the stage start at $795. Spots in the standing-room-only Club Renaissance section at midfield go for $1,400 and up.

What time does the concert start?

Ticketmaster says showtime is at 8 p.m. , but take that with a grain of salt. When the Renaissance Tour began in Philadelphia a few weeks ago, Beyoncé took the stage around 8:45 p.m.; Time Out reports her Toronto show started at 8:55. On the Beyoncé subreddit , fans who went to recent shows in Detroit and at MetLife Stadium report that the concerts began between 9 and 9:30. Expect the performance to last two-and-a-half hours.

What time should I get to FedEx Field?

Stadium parking lots open at 1:30 p.m. for your pre-show tailgating needs. The gates open at 4:30 p.m. for VIPs and 5 p.m. for everyone else.

What’s the best way to get to FedEx Field?

Anyone who has been to a Commanders game knows that driving and public transportation have advantages and disadvantages, but both require patience and will probably take longer than you think.

The cheapest way to get to FedEx Field is taking Metro’s Blue and Silver lines to Morgan Boulevard . From there, it’s about a mile walk to the stadium. Crowds slowly ambling down narrow suburban sidewalks, past townhouses and apartments, have become a fixture on fall Sundays. It’s one thing to make the trip in sneakers on your way to a football game. It’s quite different if you’re wearing heels as part of your concert fit. Think carefully about whether your footwear is comfortable enough to walk at least two miles round-trip, in addition to being on your feet all night.

On Thursday afternoon, Metro announced that Sunday night service will be extended , and the last train for Ashburn will leave Morgan Boulevard at 12:04 a.m. instead of 11:34 p.m. “All customers in line at Morgan Boulevard at 12:04 a.m. will be accommodated,” it said.

If Metro seems too risky (or requires too much walking in boots not meant for such a thing), you might want to spring for a parking pass. Ticketmaster offers parking as a concert “Add-On” for $65, unless you’re arriving in a bus or limo, in which case it’s $100.

Using Uber or Lyft is a potentially expensive option. There’s a dedicated area for drop-offs and pickups in the Red Zone, a tailgating area closest to Gate A. Fares often surge exponentially after concerts, such as Taylor Swift or the Weeknd’s visits to FedEx Field, when thousands of people request cars at the same time. What is the bag policy at FedEx Field?

Concerts and other events at FedEx Field follow the NFL’s bag policy , which means you can bring a clutch (with a wrist strap or shoulder strap) no larger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches; a clear plastic bag no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches by 6 inches; or, for the truly thrifty, a one-gallon clear freezer bag. That’s it. No fanny packs, no backpacks, no large purses — but carrying your wallet and accessories in a Ziploc is cool.

If your bag doesn’t meet the specifications, you can pay to check it in a storage locker. Lockers are located outside Gates A and E, according to the team, but the numbers are limited. When Taylor Swift played at FedEx Field in 2018, the lockers filled up, and WJLA reported concertgoers were throwing their purses in the trash, or hiding them in bushes outside the stadium, in order to attend the show.

What celebrities might come to see Beyoncé?

The Renaissance Tour has been a star-studded affair, with Oprah and Madonna among the crowd watching at MetLife Stadium last weekend in New Jersey. (In an Instagram Reel, Oprah called the performance “ the most extraordinary show I’ve ever seen .”)

2024 Memorial Tournament Full Field: Signature Event Returns to Jack Nicklaus’s Place

After a two-week break for many of the PGA Tour’s top players, a key summer stretch begins this week at the Memorial Tournament.

The annual trip to Dublin, Ohio, is a signature event and this year will be followed by the season’s third major, the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. Then comes another signature event at the Travelers Championship.

That’s a lot of cash up for grabs—likely $60 million in purses with the U.S. Open purse to be announced—and enough FedEx Cup points to ensure deep playoff runs.

So this week’s field of 73 includes everyone in the top 30 in the world who’s eligible, i.e., not in LIV Golf. The highest-ranked player not in the field is No. 35 Min Woo Lee.

Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1 who is no longer facing felony charges , leads the field. Viktor Hovland is the defending champion; the Norwegian won in a playoff last year over Denny McCarthy and would go on to win the FedEx Cup. After a lull to start 2024, Hovland is back in form after a solo third at the PGA Championship. Other past champions in the field include Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay and Hideki Matsuyama.

Native Ohioan Jack Nicklaus of course is the tournament host this week, having founded the Memorial in 1976 (and winning it twice himself, in 1977 and 1984). His Muirfield Village provides a tough test every year; last year 7 under made it to the playoff.

The Memorial has a $20 million purse and this year the “legacy” signature events (the Genesis, Arnold Palmer Invitational and Memorial) all award 20% of the purse to the winner: $4 million.

The year's second major championship is almost here, and the best in the world are punching their tickets to Pinehurst No. 2 for the 124th edition of the U.S. Open.

The USGA uses a variety of different qualification methods to fill out the field for the U.S. Open, with the alpha field list first revealed on Wednesday, June 5, after the conclusion of open qualifying on the Longest Day in Golf.

T he 2024 the Memorial Tournament field is set with the passing of the PGA Tour tournament entry deadline . This week's PGA Tour field is set for this FedEx Cup event, played at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio, from June 6-9, 2024.

The the Memorial Tournament field is headlined by the likes of Rory McIlroy , Scottie Scheffler , Xander Schauffele and more.

This is set to be a 73-player field is played out over four days, with this event marking the 26th tournament of the 2024 PGA Tour schedule .

The tournament is being played in its originally intended slot, with the PGA Tour heading to Jack Nicklaus' masterpiece course and home club as he hosts this Signature event.

We do not have Monday qualifiers for this event, which will be played Thursday through Sunday.

The Memorial Tournament alternate list does not exist. Only players who qualify for the event can play and will not be replaced in the tournament.

The field will be playing for a $20 million purse, with 44 of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking among the top contenders.

2024 Memorial Tournament picks, predictions, field, odds: Proven golf expert fading Patrick Cantlay

Sia nejad reveals his memorial tournament 2024 picks, props, and sleepers for this week's pga tour event in dublin, ohio.

The 2024 Memorial Tournament is set to get underway on Thursday, June 6, and several players will enter this week's event confident they can secure the victory. Viktor Hovland is the defending champion and he's coming off a third-place finish at the PGA Championship. With another win at Muirfield Village Golf Club this week, he'll become the first golfer since Tiger Woods to successfully defend his title. 

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, can add to his impressive resume with a victory at the 2024 Memorial Tournament. Scheffler is going off as the +360 favorite (risk $100 to win $360) according to the latest 2024 Memorial Tournament odds. He's followed by Rory McIlroy (+800), Xander Schauffele (+900) and Collin Morikawa (+1400) on the PGA odds board. Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been solid with his head-to-head matchups since last year's Charles Schwab Challenge, going 48-30-3 and returning 15.09 units over that span. That's a $1,509 profit for $100 bettors since May 2023. Nejad also nailed Wyndham Clark, a 75-1 longshot, as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship. Top 2024 Memorial Tournament expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is low on the chances of Patrick Cantlay (+2500), even though he has won this event twice in the last five years (2019, 2021). Cantlay has had tremendous success at Muirfield Village in recent years, but he's struggled mightily in 2024. He's coming off a T-54 finish at the PGA Championship and he's finished T-22 or worse in six of his last seven starts on the PGA Tour. 

Cantlay's recent struggles can be directly attributed to his iron play. The 32-year-old enters the 2024 Memorial Tournament ranked 122nd in strokes gained: approach to green (-0.153) and 146th in greens in regulation percentage (62.68%). He's also been inconsistent off the tee, ranking 69th in driving accuracy (63.97%) and 72nd in strokes gained: off the tee (0.147). Muirfield Village demands precision, which doesn't bode well for Cantlay's chances to finish on top of the leaderboard this week. "I don't think he's in the type of form where we can capitalize on an outright given how well some of the other golfers that are +3000 and shorter are playing," Nejad told SportsLine.

Instead, Nejad is high on Corey Conners, who is a +5500 longshot. The Canadian is coming off a sixth-place finish last week in his native country, marking his best finish of the season. His strengths should also play well at the Memorial, with Nejad saying, "he's typically a fantastic ball striker and he's shown a recent ability to spike with the putter gaining an insane 6.42 strokes in last week's RBC Canadian Open (gained ARG as well)."

That showing continued a strong run of play for Conners, who got off to a rough start to the 2024 PGA Tour season. He failed to notch a top 25 in each of his first four events, but he has seven top 25s over his last 11 starts, as well as three top 15s over his last four tournaments. Additionally, the best part of Conners' game is his iron play as he ranks second in both greens in regulation percentage and strokes gained: approach to green, trailing Scheffler in both.  See which other players to back at SportsLine .

This week's Memorial Tournament tees off seven days before the U.S. Open, but fears have been allayed that the field would lose some juice if some of the biggest names in golf opted to rest up before next week's major championship at Pinehurst.

Memorial host Jack Nicklaus was one of those concerned his PGA Tour event would be hurt by its new placement on the schedule, but the Golden Bear can rest easy; nine of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking have committed to show up at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

The 49th Memorial, which begins competition Thursday but has practice rounds, a pro-am and fan festivities beginning Monday, moved a week later on the calendar because the tour wanted to bunch its signature events. The Memorial is one of eight such events that offer larger purses and limited fields (from 120 players down into the 70s; the Memorial will have 73). The tour also wanted to avoid squeezing single regular events between signatures, where they could get overlooked.

This year, the Memorial was preceded by the non-signature Canadian Open and Colonial and will be followed by the U.S. Open and signature Travelers.

"I'm excited about the field we have this year, and it's great to see the support we have from the top players in the game," Nicklaus said. "With the smaller field, we're sort of going back to a more exclusive group of players like we had originally in our early years."

The final version of the Memorial field, released Monday morning, may be smaller, but it packs some star-power punch.

Copa America stadiums and host cities guide: What to know, food, drinks, trivia and transportation

Copa America kicks off on June 20 with tournament holders and reigning World Cup champions Argentina facing Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The home of the Atlanta Falcons is one of 14 stadiums across the United States that will host North and South America’s best international teams this summer.

Many of you will be travelling across the States to follow teams. To ensure you are prepared for wherever you visit, The Athletic has created a comprehensive guide to every stadium and city involved.

From theme parks to cocktails, here are our recommendations to make the most of your Copa America experience.

Q2 Stadium, Austin, Texas

The basics:  The stadium opened three years ago and has a capacity of 20,738. The first game at the ground was between USWNT and Nigeria. Angel City attacker Christen Press scored the first goal there, in a 2-0 win. 

Food and drink: There are concession stands located in almost every corner with local restaurants and cuisines. If Texas BBQ is your thing, CM Smokehouse, Valentina’s Tex-Mex BBQ, and Slovacek’s, a Texas-Czech fusion food stand, sound particularly appetising. Bulleit Bar, Crown Royal and Karbach Draft are the pick of the bars.

How about some trivia? Q2 Stadium was the first soccer stadium in the world to have “just walk out” technology. Operated by Amazon, the “just walk out” gates allow fans to scan their credit cards at the point of entry, pick up their desired beverages (local Austin craft beers are recommended) and… just walk out. No checkout or scanning process is required.

What you can do nearby:  For lunch, we recommend Franklin or Interstellar for Texas BBQ. Then, get pre-game drinks at Hopsquad Brewery or Celis Brewery near the stadium. For dinner, try Tex-Mex, where Matt’s El Rancho is a local favorite. And if you’re planning on taking the celebrations into the night, go to a live music spot like White Horse or Broken Spoke. 

How to get there using public transportation: CapMetro, the public transportation provider in Austin, increases service on matchdays and the stadium is generally accessible from most parts of the city. The Metro Red Line train is considered the best option from downtown Austin. Fans can take the train to McKalla Station, just outside Q2 Stadium.

• July 2: Costa Rica v Paraguay (Group D)

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia

The basics:  Oh lord, won’t you buy me… a stadium worth $1.6billion. This glitzy multi-purpose arena opened in August 2017 and can hold up to 71,000 people. The biggest event it has hosted so far is Super Bowl LIII in 2018, when the New England Patriots, led by Tom Brady, beat LA Rams, 13-3. 

Food and drink : For fans of Top Chef, Gamechanger is a must-visit. Kevin Gillespie, a finalist in the sixth season of the show, is a lifelong Falcons fan and opened Gamechanger on the 200 concourse western end zone of the stadium in 2017. He serves food he describes as “junk food of a higher quality”. 

Trivia : On July 22, 2021, Kanye West held a listening event for his album Donda at the stadium. Afterwards, West lived in the stadium for two weeks until the album’s completion, converting locker-room facilities into temporary recording spaces and living areas.

What you can do nearby:  The stadium is in the heart of downtown Atlanta. You can take a walk to Centennial Olympic Park, a 22-acre park built for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Georgia Aquarium, around a 15-minute walk, is the largest aquarium in the United States.

How to get there using public transportation : MARTA, a city-wide rail and bus system, provides two stops on the stadium’s doorstep. For $2.50 (plus a one-time Breeze card purchase of $2), fans can avoid the added costs of driving. The closest station to Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center Station.

Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina

The basics: The stadium opened in 1996 and can hold 74,867 people. Before Bank of America purchased its naming rights in 2004, it was called the Ericsson Stadium, named after the Swedish telecommunications company founded by Lars Magnus Ericsson, the inventor of Bluetooth.

Food and drink: Angeline’s is a highly-rated Italian restaurant half a mile away, known for its pasta and wood-fired pizzas. If that does not whet your appetite, Fin & Fino is a great spot to grab seafood within a 10-minute walk from the stadium.

Trivia: The stadium is built on top of Good Samaritan Hospital, which was built in 1891 and was the first private hospital in North Carolina to serve Black patients in the racially segregated American South.

What you can do nearby:  If you’re a NASCAR fan or simply want to learn more about America’s favourite motorsport, the NASCAR Hall of Fame is under a mile from the stadium. Tours begin at 1pm and last approximately two hours.

How to get there using public transportation : To arrive closest to the stadium, catch the LYNX Blue Line light rail and disembark at Stonewall Station or Carson Station — both are around a 15-minute walk. Several bus routes also provide easy access.

• July 13: Third-place play-off

AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

The basics: With a soccer capacity of 80,000, expandable to over 100,000 for major events, the AT&T Stadium is undoubtedly one of America’s flagship sports venues. It hosted the 2011 Super Bowl, where the Packers, led by Aaron Rodgers, defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in front of 103,219 spectators.

Food and drink: Concession stands throughout offer burgers and hot dogs, while the Sausage Supreme is the pick of the options for Texas BBQ lovers.

Trivia: AT&T Stadium is commonly referred to as Jerry World after Jerry Jones, the eccentric owner of the Dallas Cowboys. When the stadium opened, the big screen, otherwise known as the Jerrytron, was the largest HD television in the world.

What you can do nearby: Arlington is home to all 212 acres of the Six Flags Over Texas theme park. It opened in 1961 and is the first amusement park in the Six Flags chain. The park has 45 attractions, including 13 rollercoasters.

How to get there using public transportation: Unfortunately, there is no direct train connection from downtown Dallas to the AT&T Stadium. There is a train line that runs from Victory Station in Dallas to Centrepoint Station in Irving, nearer to Arlington. From there, a taxi is estimated to cost around $20. If you plan on taking a rental car, note that parking prices have exceeded $75 for other events. Shuttles run frequently from nearby Arlington hotels, dropping passengers off next to the entrance.

• June 21: Peru vs Chile (Group A)
• June 23: United States vs Bolivia (Group C)
• July 5: Quarter-final – Group B winner vs Group A runner-up

NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas

The basics: While the Houston Texans have not had much post-season success, the NRG Stadium has played a big role in the NFL playoffs. The stadium, which opened in 2002, has hosted two Super Bowls (2004 and 2017), with the New England Patriots winning both.

NRG also held the Copa America Centenario semi-final between Argentina and the United States in 2016. Argentina won 4-0, with Ezequiel Lavezzi, Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi on the scoresheet.  

Food and drink: The stadium has 38 permanent food stands, 32 bars, 11 grab-and-go shops and over 100 portable stalls, so a lack of choice will not be an issue.

For fans looking for some Texas BBQ goodness, Killen’s BBQ, available at sections 323 and 351, is a local favourite owned by Ronnie Killen, a native Houstonian. El Tiempo is a popular spot for Tex-Mex, dishing out fajitas, tacos and nachos, while Hugo’s brings the Mexican flavour at an upscale level.

Trivia: The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is held annually in March for three weeks. About a week before the rodeo starts, around 100 trucks arrive at the stadium carrying around 5,500 cubic yards of dirt — each cubic yard measures close to 200 gallons — which workers spend two days preparing ahead of the event.

What you can do nearby: The Astros, Houston’s MLB franchise, are at home to the Baltimore Orioles on the same day that Mexico plays Jamaica. The start times are five hours apart, so if you’re looking for something to do ahead of the game, why not head to see some baseball?

How to get there using public transportation: Fans can catch the METRORail Red Line from any of the downtown stations and take it south towards the NRG Park station. If you have rented a car for the trip, drive to the Fannin South Station one stop before NRG Park for park-and-ride.

• June 24: Colombia vs Paraguay (Group D)
• July 4: Quarter-final – Group A winner vs Group B runner-up

Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri

The basics: Arrowhead represents American sporting heritage. Opened in 1972, it is the long-time home of the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs and has a capacity of 76,416. Away from sport, it was the opening venue for the “Victory Tour” when Michael Jackson reunited with the Jackson 5 in 1984 after the success of his Thriller album.

Food and drink: Despite Arrowhead being one of the older stadiums hosting a Copa America match, its concession stands are modern and diverse. @ArrowheadEats is a useful resource on X that tracks all the newest and tastiest options at the Kansas City stadium.

Trivia: Arrowhead is officially the loudest stadium in the world. After initially setting the Guinness World Record during the Chiefs and Oakland Raiders in 2013 with a 137.5 decibel racket, the Seattle Seahawks fans at Century Link Field (137.6 dB) claimed the title two months later. However, the Chiefs reclaimed the title at Arrowhead in 2014, hitting 142 dB.

What you can do nearby: If you’re planning on staying around in Kansas City for a few days, why not take in some MLB baseball at Kauffman Stadium, yards away from Arrowhead? 

Kauffman is the home of the two-time World Series winners KC Royals, who will host the Tampa Bay Rays on July 2 and 3. The Royals have started the season strongly and could be a dark horse to go deep in the playoffs.

How to get there using public transportation: According to The Athletic’s resident Kansas City expert and U.S. managing soccer editor Alex Abnos, there is a bus that stops nearby, but the Kansas City bus service (RideKC) is notoriously unreliable. If you’re looking for a hassle-free journey to the stadium, the best bet is to rent a car, make a friend who has a car, or use a rideshare service (Lyft/Uber).

Which games are going to be played there: 

• July 1: United States v Uruguay (Group C)

Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City, Kansas

The basics: Opened in 2011, Children’s Mercy Park was one of several soccer-specific stadiums built around the turn of the decade to help grow MLS. Since moving to its new home, Sporting Kansas City has won three U.S. Open Cup titles and an MLS Cup. The USMNT has played at this venue on 10 occasions, most recently drawing 0-0 with Uruguay in June 2022.

Food and drink: If you desire something more adventurous than the average stadium fare, why not head to World’s Kitchen in section 117 to try the chicken curry or curry tots? El Capitan offers Mexican options in section 122 if Indian food does not appeal.

Trivia: Based on the concept of stop-motion photography, the stadium was designed to capture the motion of the body and the ball. The building’s exterior of repeating angular metal fins represents athleticism and movement on the field. Or so they say, anyway.

What you can do nearby: To fully engross yourself in the soccer spirit, why not hit up a Footgolf venue near the stadium? If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s pretty much what you’d expect: golf played with your feet (and a soccer ball). The Heart of America golf course is a 30-minute drive from the stadium and offers 18 holes to challenge your friends (or pre-game ahead of the match).

How to get there using public transportation: As with Arrowhead, there is a bus that stops nearby, but the Kansas City bus service (RideKC) is notoriously unreliable, so best to use a car or rideshare service (Lyft/Uber).

• June 25: Peru vs Canada (Group A)

SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California

The basics: Opened in 2020 for a whopping $5.5bn, SoFi Stadium is the most expensive stadium ever built and it might be the best. It is located in the Inglewood neighbourhood of Los Angeles, close to LAX airport and famous west LA beaches, including Santa Monica and Venice. It has a capacity of around 70,000 and hosted the Super Bowl in 2022. 

Food and drink: To avoid long queues inside the stadium, we recommend sampling Inglewood’s rich selection of international cuisines before the game. Blessed Tropical Cuisine is one of several excellent Jamaican restaurants in the area and La Fonda of Inglewood is known as one of the best authentic Mexican restaurants in west LA.

Trivia: If you are willing to sacrifice a seat to be closer to the action, arrive early for the best standing-room spots. Standing-room tickets are sold in the 300 and 400 levels, but you may be able to snag a space with a seat in the nosebleeds if you get in position well before kick-off.

What you can do nearby: If you’ve booked a few days in LA, we recommend visiting the Getty Center for the views and museum. If you’re travelling with a family, Disneyland and Universal Studios will deliver for all. 

How to get there using public transportation: Take the Metro C Line and disembark at Hawthorne/Lennox Station, where Metro typically offers an Express shuttle service to SoFi Stadium on game day . If you have rented a car, you can park at this station for free and take the $4 round-trip ride to SoFi.

• June 24: Brazil vs Costa Rica (Group D)
• June 26: Venezuela v Mexico (Group B)

Allegiant Stadium, Paradise, Nevada

The basics: Located in the middle of the world’s most famous resort city, Allegiant Stadium is one of America’s most unique sports venues. The 61,000-seater stadium, which opened in 2020, hosted this year’s Super Bowl.  

Food and drink: Among masses of options at the stadium, Food Network icon Guy Fieri has translated some of his favourite dishes into stadium food at Tailgate Kitchen and Bar. The standouts on the menu include: the Motley Que pulled pork sandwich, the Prime Time Kobe burger and the Tailgater Trash Can nachos. 

For drinks, try a cocktail designed by mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim. His specials include the Bloody Fist Mary, Silver & Black margarita with Casamigos, and the Chucky with Gentleman Jack.

Trivia: Allegiant Stadium has a roll-in field tray mechanism, which allows a grass field to be brought in ahead of matches and taken out afterwards to receive sunlight. The mechanism weighs 19 million pounds and is powered by 72 motors.

What you can do nearby: They say a trip to Vegas isn’t complete without a flutter at a casino, but if gambling isn’t your thing, why not head to the Sphere? It is hosting the Darren Aronofsky “Postcard from Earth” experience during Copa America and you can snag tickets for around $100. 

How to get there using public transportation: The stadium is within walking distance of all the major hotels in Vegas, but it may not be pleasant in the height of summer.

Download rideRTC on your smartphone, where you can buy a two-hour bus pass for $6. A 24-hour pass is $8, and a three-day pass costs $20. The bus operates the Vegas strip 24 hours a day.

• June 26: Ecuador v Jamaica (Group B)
• June 28: Paraguay v Brazil (Group D)
• July 6: Quarter-final – Group C winner v Group D runner-up

Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida

The basics: It’s been a heck of a long time since the Miami Dolphins reached the Super Bowl, but the NFL has used the Hard Rock Stadium six times to host its showpiece event. This year’s Copa America final will join a long list of major events across sports and entertainment to be held in Miami Gardens.

Food and drink: Miami is known for its Cuban population and influence, so why not try Cafe Versailles in Section 347 to get a taste of the local cuisine? Versailles has been feeding the city since 1971 and the classic Cuban sandwich with a side of plantain chips or an order of empanadas is recommended.

Chef Creole is another great option in Section 117. The concession stand run by Wilkinson Sejour is known for its comfort food, with jambalaya, stewed chicken, and oxtail among the extensive selection.

Trivia: According to reports, the stadium was built on land that was once the burial ground for the South Florida Tequesta, a Native American tribe.

Consequently, some fans have blamed the “Curse of the Tequesta” for the Miami Dolphins’ failure to win a Super Bowl since leaving the Orange Bowl for the Hard Rock Stadium.

What you can do nearby: Miami Carol City Park is delightful in the summer, with its playgrounds, picnic pavilions and large green areas. If you’re attending the game with family and young children, this is a perfect spot to relax before and after the action.

How to get there using public transportation: There is no public transportation system to the stadium, so you will need to drive or take a taxi.

Taxis are allowed to drop off and pick up at Gate 4, while rideshare services (Lyft, Uber etc.) are required to pick up and drop off at Lot 42 on NW 27th Ave. This lot is a 20-minute walk away from the stadium.

• June 21: Uruguay v Panama (Group A)
• June 29: Argentina v Peru (Group A)
• July 14: Final

MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey

The basics… This 82,500-capacity stadium has seen pretty much everything from a sports and entertainment perspective. It has hosted the Super Bowl, Wrestlemania (twice) and even a Mass service held by Pope John Paul II. It was also the venue for the Copa America Centenario final in 2016, where Chile beat Argentina 4-2 on penalties.

Food and drink: You cannot go wrong with Stadium Gyro in section 134. Tacos Raqueros is another solid option. They have a variety of taco and burrito options, with the pork a local favourite. Make sure to ask for the salsa verde.

Trivia: MetLife Stadium will host the 2026 World Cup final. The venue beat out SoFi and AT&T for the privilege to host the world’s biggest sports event.

What you can do nearby: You’re only a short ride away from New York City, so you can spend most of your time there before the game. If you want to grab a pre-game bite, Chelsea Market food hall is a one-stop shop for international cuisine. The Los Tacos No 1 stall is always popular, but be prepared to queue. 

Central Park remains among New York’s best summer attractions, which is also very close to several museums and galleries.

How to get there using public transportation: If you’re coming from New York City, take the NJ Transit train from Penn Station to Secaucus Junction. Be sure that you’re taking the train to Secaucus, which are marked “SEC”.

Once you arrive at Secaucus, you’ll see departure boards that will direct you to the correct platform to catch the train to the stadium.

• June 25: Chile v Argentina (Group A)
• June 27: Uruguay v Bolivia (Group C) 
• July 9: Semi-final

Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando, Florida

The basics: The soccer-specific stadium opened in 2017 and has a capacity of 25,500. It has hosted six USMNT matches and held the 2019 MLS All-Star game against La Liga club Atletico Madrid.

Food and drink: If you love Mexican food, try the Black Rooster Taqueria in Section 24. Achiote Pork and Black Rooster Asada are great options, but our pick is the Chicken Tinga. If you’re after a burger, the “Drunken Monk” at Teak Neighborhood Grill (Section 18/19) is among the best this stadium has to offer.

Trivia: It was the first MLS venue to have an all-standing stand. The safe-standing structure was designed to resemble the Victoria Ground, Stoke City’s former stadium.

The 3,811-capacity section is occupied by the main supporters’ groups, the Iron Lion Firm and The Ruckus. They have dubbed this section “The Wall”, in homage to Borussia Dortmund’s famous Yellow Wall.

What you can do nearby: Are you serious? Go to Disney World and Universal Studios, of course! Universal Studios is around a 15-minute drive from the stadium and is home to attractions including the Hogwarts Express and the Revenge of the Mummy rollercoaster.

For Disney World, it’s around another 15 minutes in the same direction. As well as the traditional Disney classics, you can visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios, where the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Rise of the Resistance attractions await.

How to get there using public transportation: The stadium is in downtown Orlando, so it will likely be within walking distance from your hotel. If you’re staying slightly further out, SunRail is your best bet. Church Street Station is only a short walk from the stadium, so ensure your train stops there.

• June 29: Chile v Canada (Group A)
• July 1: Bolivia v Panama (Group C)

State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Arizona

The basics: Since opening in 2006, the 72,200-seater stadium has been a prominent destination for America’s most important sporting events. It has hosted three Super Bowls (XLII, XLIX and LVII) and College Football National Championship games. 

Food and drink : There are plenty of delicious restaurants nearby, so we recommend going to the stadium with a full stomach.

NakedQ BBQ offers traditional BBQ sandwiches and platters with pulled meats, brisket, ribs and delicious sides. State 48 Funk House Brewery offers broadly similar options but with a wider beer selection.

Six speciality cocktails are available inside the stadium and we recommend the Valley of the Sun Peach Breeze and the Desert Heat.

Trivia: State Farm Stadium kicked off Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour in 2023 and Glendale symbolically renamed itself “Swift City” to honour the occasion.

What you can do nearby: The stadium typically holds a “Preflight Party” before Cardinals matches on the stadium’s south lawn, suitable for the whole family.

This area has a DJ, food and drink, activities and, perhaps most importantly in the summer months, plenty of shade.

How to get there using public transportation: Unfortunately, there is little infrastructure to service fans planning to visit the stadium on public transportation. If you are unable to rent a car, your best bet is to get a taxi/rideshare from Phoenix to Glendale and make your way to the stadium from that area on foot.

• June 28: Colombia v Costa Rica (Group D)
• June 30: Mexico v Ecuador (Group D)
• July 6: Quarter-final – Group D winner vs Group C runner-up

Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California

The basics: Located around one hour from San Francisco, Levi’s Stadium is the Bay Area’s sporting mecca. It hosted Super Bowl 50 in 2016, where the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in front of a capacity crowd of 71,008, as well as other major sporting events, including Wrestlemania 31.

Food and drink: If you’re after traditional sports grub, look no further than Scratch Kitchen’s Nashville Hot Chicken Slider, crispy tenders and tortilla chip-style fries. For something more exotic, try the Ahi Tuna tapas or the Steakhouse “Tomahawk” boards.

Trivia: There’s an organically maintained farm on the stadium’s rooftop. It is the first rooftop farm on an NFL stadium and grows around 40 different crops, including tomatoes, peppers and edible flowers. The vegetables are used in dishes served in the stadium’s concession stands.

What you can do nearby: California’s Great America is a 112-acre theme park located an eight-minute walk away from Levi’s Stadium. It falls into the traditional category of amusement parks, but there are enough modern rollercoasters to keep thrill-seekers entertained.

For tech heads, the Intel Museum is within a 30-minute walk (or 20-minute ACE ride) of the stadium. It has exhibits of Intel’s products and history and plenty of interactive facilities for children.

How to get there using public transportation: You can ride the VTA light rail to the stadium. The closest stations are the Great America station (located just west of Levi’s) and the Lick Mill station to the east.

For patrons attending from San Francisco, VTA offers a dedicated shuttle bus service to the stadium from the Warm Springs BART station. Warm Springs can be reached on the BART green line from the Embarcadero station in downtown San Francisco.
