Christina Rado

The Dominican Republic lives up to this reputation as a stunning country in the Caribbean, with scenic beaches, luxe resorts, and beautiful architecture.

If you want a dreamy vacation with your family, you won’t go wrong with its resorts.

Even though our family has been to the Dominican Republic five times already, we can’t get enough of it.

We also see to it to try different resorts to experience the best of this country.

Our experiences at these resorts gave me an idea to create this list.

I researched and contacted locals and other parents who have been here to ensure that everything I shared was correct.

I hit two birds with one stone doing this since I know where to bring my family on our next Dominican Republic vacation.

If it’s your first time traveling with your family here, I’m sure my experiences, reviews, and comparisons will be helpful.

For the comparisons, I listed the pros and cons and ranked them based on kid-friendliness, family accommodations, dining choices, safety, affordability, and location.

  • Exceptional service
  • Family-friendly and beautiful beach
  • The resort needs customer service improvement

You may be able to tell from the name of the property that it boasts of incredible suites.

There are six pools on the property that you can enjoy, along with the swim-up refreshment stands attached to each of them.

You can also enjoy water sports like kayaking, windsurfing, and more, on this property.

The Castillo de Pirata or the Pirate Castle is a big hit with the younger kids, and I would imagine, even with their parents.

Four different programs have been designed for kids of different age groups.

Kids from the ages of one to 17 can enjoy a wide range of activities at this resort.

2. Melia Caribe Beach Resort, Punta Cana

Melia Caribe Beach Resort, Punta Cana

  • Many activities for children
  • It doesn’t feel crowded though there are many guests
  • A bit expensive

This is an incredible family hotel with great family vacation packages.

If you are traveling with the extended family, you can also book the family suites that come with several room options and also have bunk beds and gaming consoles for the younger lot (and even the older lot, who are we kidding.).

At the Kids Club, there are also provisions for full-day childcare for children who are eight months or older.

As parents, you can also enjoy unlimited access to the 18-hole golf course.

I would highly recommend making use of the property to take a stroll in the evenings and observe the flamingoes and turtles on the estate.

3. Iberostar Costa Dorada, Puerto Plata

  • More variety of drinks

There is a spa and several areas for entertainment where the adults can take some time off while the kids can spend the day at the Mini Club.

The club has a variety of games and a playground where the kids will never miss their parents.

If you have a child between the ages of 4 and 12, you can also keep them engaged at the Star Camp where they are bound to make plenty of friends of their own age.

Among activities that adults can enjoy, there is kayaking, tennis lessons, archery, etc.

You can also go kiteboarding in Cabarete, the nearby hub for watersports.

4. The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real

The Reserve At Paradisus Palma Real

Av. Alemania Punta Cana 23000 (809) 688-5000 Visit Website Open in Google Maps

If you prefer a more intimate destination, The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real is an excellent option to Melia Caribe Beach Resort and Iberostar Costa Dorada.

The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real is related to the Paradisus Punta Cana Resort but it is relatively smaller.

However, the smaller scale of the resort does not mean it does not offer near-perfect services.

You can enjoy the Family Concierge service here as well which is included in your stay if you opt for the Family Concierge Suite.

This is also one of the most incredible places to stay if you are traveling with tiny tots.

The Mini Club is the ideal place to keep your child engaged if they are under the age of 12.

You can also take the older kids to outdoor adventures like the climbing wall and the bouncing house.

But the highlight for me is the massive and lavish pool complex which has waterslides, a separate kiddie zone and a lot more to keep you frolicking in the water the whole day.

Club Med Punta Cana is a family hotel that is sure to give you some of the best memories of your life.

This is also one of the most kid-friendly resorts in the Dominican Republic and you can also travel with an infant without worrying about safety or convenience.

There are areas in the resort restaurant that have been designated for preparing baby food.

You can also take the complimentary strollers from the resort on loan.

The great draw of this resort is also that you can enroll in the Circus School at the resort to train in a variety of different skills like juggling.

Of course, you may not become an experienced trapeze artist but it is a fun story to take back home of the time you learned circus tricks.

6. Paradisus Punta Cana Resort

The Paradisus Punta Cana Resort is the best place to go in this part of the Dominican Republic if you are traveling with family.

The resort is known to have various types of activities for people of all ages.

If you are traveling with a large group or if you can extend your budget slightly, I would also recommend the Family Concierge option which will take your family holiday to a whole new level.

In this upgraded package, your family can enjoy the services of a butler who will help you plan each day of your D.R. family vacation.

The resort will also provide you with shuttle service or bicycles so you can go to and from the recreational areas and the adjacent beach.

This is an all-inclusive resort that also accounts for child care and programs to keep the older kids busy as well.

The Dominican Republic is good for families because you can enjoy cheap family vacations at places like Barcelo Bavaro Palace .

While this is not a budget resort, it offers great value for money and the whole family can enjoy a great time without breaking the bank.

The main thing that draws me to this resort is the two water parks that have been built on-site — The Pirates Island Park and the Barcy Water Park, one for people of all ages and the other for kids, respectively.

There are also four lavish swimming pools on the property where you can unwind and relax in the afternoons.

There are also Family Club packages that are included in your stay so you can also treat yourself with some time off from the kids because you know you deserve it.

8. Ocean Blue & Sand

Ocean Blue & Sand Beach Resort is another great place in the Bávaro region for holidaying with the family.

To my mind, the best thing about staying at this resort, apart from the proximity to the beach, is the charming town square that is located bang in the middle of the resort.

There are also eight different types of restaurants you can enjoy on-site, including an incredible Mexican restaurant where you can enjoy the burrito bowl of your dreams.

There is also the Miniclub Daisy and the Teen Club where kids from the ages of 4 to 12 and 13 to 17, respectively, can enjoy their day.

Go for the live theater shows as a family, go swimming, diving and a lot more.

Make the most of the resort while you are holidaying.

The Core Zone Teens Club is also an option for the older kids, aged between 13 and 17 to hang out.

The on-site spa is also suitable for kids.

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana is a heartfelt homage to the children’s network after which it has been named.

The decor of the resort as well as the activities it offers are all Nickelodeon themed.

Suffice to say, then, that this is the perfect resort for you to stay with your young teenage kids.

The rooms also have a decor inspired by the network and its shows, and of course, you will be greeted by Nickelodeon showstopper SpongeBob Squarepants several times during your stay at the resort.

No matter how old I get, I will always be a Spongebob fan so this is a resort I am particularly drawn towards.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana is, of course, an incredible place for rock fans to visit.

The Hard Rock Cafe is full of rock memorabilia and will certainly take you down a nostalgia trip of rock’s golden age and artists.

The resort is massive and it seems like a self-contained and sleepy town in itself.

This is also not just a resort that only older adults can enjoy, there are several things here that kids would find exciting, such as a video game arcade, a mini-golf course, a pool with water slides and more.

Your kids can also enjoy arts and crafts lessons, take Spanish classes and a lot more at this incredibly versatile resort.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing resorts: which one is right for you.

Having planned many destination vacations with my family, trust me when I say choosing a suitable resort is easy.

Grand Palladium Bávaro Suites in Punta Cana provides the perfect setting for relaxation and water activities.

Enjoy the resort’s multiple pools, including a dedicated children’s pool and water park, ensuring endless fun for kids.

But its large size can lead to crowded areas, especially during peak seasons.

Melia Caribe Beach Resort is another popular option for families looking for a wide range of amenities and activities suitable for all age groups.

Relax on the beautiful beach, take a dip in the pools, or try out water sports activities.

While this property boasts a dedicated family-friendly area, some rooms might need an upgrade.

On the other hand, Iberostar Costa Dorada is a perfect place to see the stunning golden sands and sparkling waters of the Caribbean.

Their spacious rooms ensure a relaxing stay, and its all-inclusive package provides a convenient and hassle-free experience.

But, similar to Iberostar, some guests have reported that certain areas of the resort may require renovations.

Lastly, The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real has a more intimate feel.

However, the rooms are outdated and in need of renovation.

How I Picked The Resorts

The enjoyment and beauty of the Dominican Republic are the main reasons why we kept coming back here.

Though I have experiences to share, I researched and interacted with other guests and travelers to provide accurate and more detailed information.

The ideas and suggestions from travel sites and groups helped us pick the resorts we haven’t been to and plan to visit in the future.

Our Resort Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Kid-friendly Activities: I use this to evaluate the availability and variety of family-friendly amenities at every resort. Does it feature water parks, playgrounds, and kids’ clubs? Does the resort organize events designed specifically for kids? I ask myself these questions whenever I rate this resort’s kid-friendly activities.
  • Family Accommodations: This is used to assess the family accommodations of the resort. Are the rooms spacious? Does it offer family suites with connecting rooms? Can it accommodate families of different sizes? Is there a crib or baby-proofing in every room? These questions are essential whenever I rate the resort’s family accommodations.
  • Dining Options: This evaluates the dining options at the resort. Are there kid-friendly menus or buffet-style dining at the resort? Can the on-site restaurants cater to everyone’s dietary preferences and needs? I use these questions to assess the dining options of every property.
  • Safety and Security: I use this criterion to assess the safety and security of the resorts. Are there lifeguards at the swimming pools? Are the premises secured? Is the staff trained to handle any emergency? I consider these factors when rating the property’s safety and security.
  • Value for Money: This is used to evaluate the value of money provided by the resort. Are the room rates reasonable? Are the services, activities, and amenities suitable for the price? I ask myself these questions to rate the value for money provided by the resort.
  • Location and Accessibility: This measures how accessible the resort is for families. How far is it from the popular family attractions? Is it easily accessible via public transportation? Does the resort offer airport transfers? These are the questions I ask myself when evaluating the property’s location and accessibility.

Looking at the reviews and comparisons, the best family resorts in the Dominican Republic have something unique to offer to families.

But their common denominator is that all of them provide relaxation and enjoyment.

My experience at Melia Caribe Beach Resort was a tropical paradise that came to life.

The pools provided a refreshing oasis, and I spent hours floating under the sun.

My kids never got tired of the all-day activities at  Iberostar Costa Dorada, Puerto Plata.

Kudos to the entertainment team of the resort for making the activities enjoyable.

The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real had a lot of activities, but we opted to stay at the pool since it was so relaxing.

My son requested the kids’ zone every day during our stay.

But of all the luxury resorts I’ve had the pleasure of visiting in the Dominican Republic, Grand Palladium Bávaro Suites stands out.

The resort’s elegant architecture and lush tropical gardens created a mesmerizing backdrop for my stay.

We are big fans of Club Med, including Club Med Punta Cana . Head to the resort’s private beach and grab a drink or snack at the nearby bar when kids get hungry. The resort has three full-service restaurants, plus an area specifically for parents who need to prepare food for infants. The resort continues to keep little ones in mind with Baby Club Med (ages 4 to 23 months), but it also caters well to the older kids. Petit Club Med, Mini Club Med and Passworld separate children ages 2 to 17 into spaces with games and activities just for them. Be sure to visit the Circus School, where lessons in trapeze, juggling and tightrope walking are offered, or better yet, try Creactive by Cirque do Soleil.

Launched in 2015, the program allows guests to learn the techniques of all circus acts— aerialists, acrobats, jugglers, high bungee jumpers and even musicians. Family suites, babysitting services (until 1 a.m.) and multiple pools (including one just for kids) round out our favorite aspects of this all-inclusive Punta Cana resort.

The entire family can regroup for dinner at one of the nine restaurants at the resort, topping off the evening at Ice Cone, where fresh ice cream treats are made right onsite.

Lopesan Costa Bavaro Resort, Spa & Casino

7. Lopesan Costa Bavaro Resort, Spa & Casino

Opened in 2019, the Lopesan Costa Bavaro Resort is the European brand’s first resort in the Caribbean. The cool, contemporary design found throughout the expansive property gives off a casual, yet luxurious vibe that’s perfect for families; kids can feel comfortable, but parents don’t have to sacrifice on stylish guestrooms. There are numerous pools throughout this beachfront resort and because the resort is located in the Costa Bavaro section of Punta Cana, the Caribbean waters are calm and ideal for the youngest of visitors.

The Lopesan offers an additional section of the resort called The Boulevard. This area is somewhat removed from the main areas of the resort, but offers a ton of activities. There’s a water park and a kids’ club for ages 4 to 12, with a small stage for performances. A larger indoor theater offers nightly entertainment the whole family will enjoy. For an extra cost, families can also enjoy the bowling alley, arcade and escape room at The Boulevard.

The Paradisus Punta Cana Resort is a luxurious yet welcoming 5-star hotel and an excellent choice for your next family vacation.

Given the variety of activities and sports, as well as its open-air architecture and its location directly on a beautiful beach, you will wonder whether this accommodation is a resort or a gigantic playground for the whole family.

Your kids can enjoy hanging out on the beach, or they can decide to get a little bit more active with tennis, golf, and a wide variety of water sports.

Families love the resort for the location, cleanliness, and service. You can even request a personal butler if you so wish!

Your family will find it impossible to get bored with the range of activities available, including but not limited to kids clubs, a Sports Center, a Merengue Theater, an aquatic park, and several large pools.

If your family loves golf but doesn’t want to spend an excessive amount of money to play, check out the Hodelpa Garden Suites Golf and Convention Center .

The Hodelpa Garden Suites has a beautiful golf course and a nice fitness center for the more active types in the family.

And if you have family members that aren’t so interested in golfing, they can spend time relaxing by the massive, lagoon-style outdoor pool.

family trip dominican republic

The Royalton Splash Punta Cana is a highly-rated resort and casino in the Dominican Republic. This resort, specifically located on the pristine Bavaro Beach, offers luxury accommodations with high-class service.

Most notably, the Royalton Splash offers just that – a lot of splashing – due to their gigantic water park that your younger kids will absolutely love. This waterpark includes all of the water park favorites — wave pools, spray grounds, and, of course, heart-pounding water slides.

If you can pull your kids away from the water park, you and the family can also enjoy several other activities, live performances, dining experiences, and even theme parties on occasion!

For sports lovers, Royalton provides a Sports Event Guarantee that ensures you won’t miss your favorite international sporting events. You can catch your game at the SCORE sports bar.

Families staying at the Royalton Splash will have additional access to the casino and spa located at the neighboring Royalton Punta Cana. Every family loves getting two for the price of one!

family trip dominican republic

The Nickelodeon Hotel focuses on kids, so it’s clear why this is on our list for the best Dominican Republic all-inclusive family resorts.

Nickelodeon lives for entertaining your kids on the screen, so you can be sure they will do anything they can to make sure your little ones — and you! — have the best time.

Your family can enjoy the AquaNick water park, where you can have fun in the water and a bit of iconic Nickelodeon green slime!

There is also a Gourmet Village featuring an array of luxury meals that suit both your kids’ tastes and your own. If you desire a unique meal experience, you can join the Character Breakfast and have your young ones meet Nickelodeon’s famous characters.

Outside of Character Breakfast, there are other opportunities to see the Characters, such as meet-and-greets, theater performances, the “orange” carpet, and even character dance parties!

If your kids are obsessed with Spongebob, you can’t miss out on their most iconic villa — the Pineapple Villa — created after Spongebob Squarepants’ fictional home in Bikini Bottom.

family trip dominican republic

The folks at the Grand Paradise Samaná do not want their guests to experience a single dull moment.

They offer every type of activity or form of entertainment you can think of.

If you want to relax, you have three adult pools to choose from, a children’s pool to take your kids, and access to a beautiful beach right out front.

If you want to get active, several activities include tennis, volleyball, badminton, bicycle tours, bocce ball, mini-golf, archery, and even dance lessons.

Of course, should you want to take advantage of the beautiful Caribbean weather, you can try scuba diving, windsurfing, snorkeling, pedal boats, pool aerobics, or kayaking.

If you’ve had a day full of activities but still have plenty of energy to spare in the evening, your kids can enjoy Kiko’s kids’ club while you find a spot at the bar. Alternatively, you can all watch the nightly entertainment at the Amphitheater.

The options are seemingly endless at the Grand Paradise Samaná!

family trip dominican republic

The Bahia Principe Fantasia Punta Cana is a clear addition to this list. It’s one of the best Dominican Republic all-inclusive family resorts because it has castles!

Your kids likely inspire you by their creativity and dream-like imagination. Why not treat them to a resort that aligns with their inspiring imagination?

In addition to the beautiful castles along with the expansive pool areas, your family can enjoy a children’s water park, six different restaurants, and a family-friendly disco.

Best Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Family Resorts for Relaxation

The following resorts are perfect for families looking to chill out, rest, and rejuvenate on vacation.

family trip dominican republic

Located on the Northern coast of the Dominican Republic in Puerto Plata, the Be Live Collection Marien is a 5-star resort ideal for a relaxing, soothing holiday experience.

This getaway is perfect for the family that simply needs to chill out, featuring numerous cabanas, hammocks, umbrellas, pools, and a prime spot on a less crowded beach.

This hotel offers a kids club for your children who are 8 to 12 years old, as well as a mini club for your younger children of 4 to 7 years old. Every family member will have a spot to go that’s perfectly suited to their needs.

family trip dominican republic

You’ll find the Gran Ventana Beach Resort within Playa Dorada, a gated community right on the oceanfront in Puerto Plata.

This Gran Ventana resort is one of the best all-inclusive oceanfront beach resorts in the Dominican Republic for families looking to get away from it all. So, if you’re looking for adventure or exploring around town, this might not be the best option for your family.

The Gran Ventana is for families who want to lounge around a private, exclusive area, enjoy a clean, spacious beach, and relax at a world-class spa.

If you’d like to get a little bit more active after a few days of lounging, the resort offers various recreational activities such as tennis, golf, water polo, bike tours, and even darts.

Should you or one of your older kids feel like being really pampered, this resort offers not just a spa but a beauty salon as well.

family trip dominican republic

If you and your family can use a significant break from the hustle and bustle of life, Vista Sol Punta Cana is a pristine beach resort and spa that can soothe you and rejuvenate your whole crew.

This resort prides itself on providing a peaceful haven for you to enjoy a relaxing vacation.

We recommend this resort for families with older children. Still, if you do have kids on the younger side, they will surely enjoy the kids club, theater, and showroom — all while you’re enjoying your massages, facials, and other wellness treatments!

Best Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Family Resorts for Value

These two resorts are a great bang for your buck.

family trip dominican republic

If you’re looking for a squeaky clean, ultra-comfortable, and super inviting family-friendly environment, you might appreciate the Emotions by Hodelpa Juan Dolio all-inclusive resort.

Emotions resort is a high-value option for families seeking a bit of choice and luxury for their vacation but families that don’t need a million and one restaurant and entertainment options.

This resort by Hodelpa is an excellent choice for families who want to spend a lot of time on the beach or exploring the town and want a safe, clean, and cozy room to relax in at the end of the day.

family trip dominican republic

The Occidental Caribe is a value resort that offers many of the privileges of the other all-inclusive resorts on this list but at a more affordable cost.

At the Occidental, you can get the white sand beach just a short walk away from your room, a kids club and a water park for your young ones to enjoy, and seven nice restaurants to treat your pallet all vacation long.

You can be sure to feel comfortable and cozy, as well as a part of a vibrant community, in one of their 798 rooms and suites.

Best Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Family Resorts for Variety

The resorts below are perfect for families with a variety of interests. You can expect something for everyone at the following resorts.

family trip dominican republic

The Cofresi Palm Beach and Spa Resort is a vast all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic that offers 468 accommodations, ensuring that every type of family will be able to stay in a room that aligns with their requirements.

Given the size of this resort, you might not be surprised to read that the Cofresi includes 11 restaurants, 12 bars, and 12 pools. Your family won’t even know where to begin!

Additionally, if you have small children, they have three kids pool options for you to choose from so that everyone can have fun while staying safe. This resort is a perfect family spot, given the kids club, teen club, ice night club, playground area, and shopping area.

If you admittedly want some time away from your kids for some relaxation, don’t hesitate to reserve their babysitting services!

family trip dominican republic

The Lifestyle Tropical Beach Resort and Spa , otherwise known as The Tropical, is similar to Cofresi. This similarity isn’t surprising, as they are both Lifestyle resorts.

The Tropical also offers 11 restaurants,12 pools, three kids pools, a playground, a tennis court, and other family-friendly activity options.

The only main difference between The Tropical and the Cofresi resorts is the location. The Tropical is better for true beach lovers, as access to the beach is closer and more convenient.

family trip dominican republic

The Impressive Premium Punta Cana is located on El Cortecito Beach in Punta Cana.

Impressive offers a variety of activities and recreations for anyone at any age to enjoy, making it a great all-inclusive resort option for a family with a wide age range.

The Kids Club includes active games, video games, painting, mini disco, while the Play Zone Teens Club includes ping pong tables, video games, and a pool table.

If you don’t want to roll the dice at the casino, you can watch shows at the theater every night, including live music, circus performances, and more.

Any family member might enjoy the walk through the gardens when they need a relaxing time but want a break from the beach or the pools.

And if you’re kids are a bit older, or they go to sleep early, you can all enjoy a fun nightclub right there at the resort.

The Impressive Premium Punta Cana is right next to Impressive Punta Cana, but we recommend Impressive Premium Punta Cana as they offer junior suite accommodations instead of standard rooms.

These suite-styles rooms are better for keeping families close and comfortable.

Best Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Family Resorts for Location

The following two resorts are at a prized location in the Dominican Republic, in Bayahibe. Bayahibe is in the south of the Dominican Republic and is known for its stunning beach stretches, diving access, and laid-back vibe.

family trip dominican republic

If you’re looking to stay in the Bayahibe area, the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace is an excellent option. Many guests love the location of this resort more than anything else.

You can stay easily connected with your immediate family as well as your family and friends back home with reliable and free internet access.

If you’re looking to explore the Bayahibe area, the resort is near Conquistador Park, an excellent art museum that can appeal to your whole family.

And if your family loves lobster, check out Las Palmas, La Cueva, or Captain Kidd, all of which are a reasonable walk or drive away from the Viva Wyndham resort as well. You can also try local food near the resort at a restaurant called Polito de Coco.

family trip dominican republic

The Hilton La Romana Resort and Waterpark is a 4-star family-friendly hotel in the perfect location — right in front of Bayahibe beach.

Your family can enjoy a white sand beach and crystal clear ocean waters just steps from your room. You can even enjoy it from your room if you request a balcony with a view!

This resort includes organized and supervised kids and teens programs so that you can enjoy family time when you want but also split up and get some adult time away from the kids too.

The Hilton itself offers many things to do and several excellent dining options, but the resort’s location gives you endless opportunities for entertaining, relaxation, and exploration.

Near the resort, you can visit Altos de Chavón, take a beautiful boat ride to Saona Island, or snorkel above the coral reef at Catalina Island. Don’t forget to get a taste of the authentic Dominican Republic at the local markets!

Best Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Family Resorts for Dining

The following resort wins when it comes to offering high-rated food options.

family trip dominican republic

The Meliá Caribe Beach Resort provides a beautiful setting for the perfect family vacation.

This stunning resort offers an upscale experience at a reasonable, high-value cost. Guests are impressed by the elegant, cozy, warm room and suite designs.

Families seem to especially appreciate the delicious food, which spans a wide variety of international options, including Spanish, Italian, Tex-Mex, Vietnamese, Japanese, and, of course, Caribbean dishes.

Once your stomach settles, you and the family can visit Splash Island Water Park and enjoy some thrilling slides and games. Or, you can continue eating at the O Grille buffet if you so choose.

Best Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Family Resorts for Sophisticated Style

If you weren’t particularly impressed by the designs of the resorts mentioned above, you might be looking for a more sophisticated style. Check out the resorts below.

family trip dominican republic

Formerly named the Grand Reserve, the Paradisus Grand Cana is an excellent option for families with sophisticated tastes in design, comfort, and food.

family trip dominican republic

This Lifestyle resort called Presidential Suites is a wonderful all-inclusive option for families that want to feel right at home in ample space and have a private place to gather. Many other hotel options require a family of four or five to split up into two separate rooms.

These luxurious suites will allow families to have two rooms in a suite-like fashion, providing a gathering space to plan your adventures in the morning and swap stories in the evenings. The bedrooms combine wood and stainless steel elements for a crisp and modern yet regal overall look.

Presidential Suites resort also includes a basketball court, tennis courts, and a pool with a waterfall. On-site, there is also a delicious French fusion restaurant and ten other highly-rated dining options.

family trip dominican republic

The name of the Majestic Elegance Punta Cana resort speaks to its design and style. It truly is elegant, which is why this resort will appeal to families looking for an upscale, highly photogenic vacation experience.

Booking Tip

Looking to score a deal on your all-inclusive vacation? Consider visiting the Dominican Republic outside of the peak season, which typically lasts from December to April.

Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana, Punta Cana

Set on a private beach in Punta Cana, Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana offers two resorts in one: the family-friendly Wave and the adults-only Hammock . Across the property, you'll find 519 suites, 40 luxury villas, ten restaurants, a spa, and two pools. Guest rooms have furnished balconies and customizable in-room refreshment centers. Daily entertainment, water sports, tennis, pickleball, cocktails, meals and beverages, and all taxes and gratuities are included in the rate. For kids ages four to 12, there's the Parakeets Kids Club with daily programming and activities.

"As a sun-starved Northeasterner, I spend winters scheming getaways to destinations where sand and surf are the main attractions, and I only need to check my watch to confirm it’s wine o’clock somewhere. Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana, an all-inclusive located within Punta Cana’s private, 30,000-acre stretch of private shoreline, made for an enjoyable couples getaway in January 2022," said Travel + Leisure contributor Robin Catalano. "During the day I stuck mainly to Margaritaville’s corner of Juanillo Beach, and the markedly quieter adults-only section of the resort. I also made forays into the St. Somewhere Spa, where I indulged in hydrotherapy circuits followed by the polar plunge pool and sauna or a massage."

Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort, Punta Cana

Surrounded by palm trees and lush landscaping, Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort has 14 restaurants and bars where guests can enjoy unlimited meals and drinks. There's a main pool, a family pool, and a splash pool for small children. Activities and amenities include sailing, windsurfing, kayaks, catamarans, bicycles, a kids zone, tennis, and paddle courts. All taxes, service charges, and gratuities are included. Guests looking for an adults-only experience can stay in one of The Reserve rooms or swim-up suites, which have their own private pool and beach area, plus a slew of other privileges.

Viva V Samaná By Wyndham, Samaná

Guests at this 286-room Dominican Republic resort enjoy rates that include accommodations, all meals and snacks, unlimited beverages, cocktails, and wine. Situated on the Samaná Peninsula, the property makes the most of its sandy shores with outdoor activities, including beachside yoga, pilates, and volleyball. Water sports, theme nights, entertainment, taxes, and gratuities are also included. Visitors can also bliss out at the top-notch spa.

Grand Paradise Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata

The beachfront Grand Paradise Playa Dorada features 425 guest rooms and 94 suites, an on-site casino, evening entertainment, and a disco. The rate includes three meals daily plus snacks, wine with lunch and dinner, tennis, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, miniature golf, horseback riding, and biking. Supervised kids activities are available at Kiki's Kids Club for ages four to 12. A Select VIP Club level adds premium drinks, private check-in, concierge services, and admission to adults-only areas.

Nickelodeon Resort Punta Cana, Punta Cana

Courtesy of Karisma Hotels & Resorts

Live out your childhood dream of getting slimed at Nickelodeon Punta Cana. This all-inclusive resort on Uvero Alto beach leans into cartoons like Spongebob Squarepants and Paw Patrol, making it a fun, splashy getaway for families and kids at heart. "I'm a self-proclaimed Spongebob superfan, and I had a blast watching my favorite episodes in the open-air theater and sipping slime smoothies at the swim-up bar," said T+L contributor  Madeline Bilis  after a 2024 stay.

The resort counts 460 suites, though the property's true highlight is the  Pineapple Villa , a spacious 1,500-foot home with a fruit-shaped foyer that resembles Spongebob's underwater residence. Elsewhere, nine restaurants, three bars, and four pools make plenty of space for fun in the sun. Perhaps the best spot of all to catch rays (and get slimed) is at Aqua Nick, the on-site waterpark decked out with bright-orange water slides, water jets, fountains, a lazy river, and more.

Hotel Catalonia Royal La Romana, La Romana

Located in the scenic fishing village of Bayahibe, this 117-room adults-only Hotel Catalonia Royal La Romana offers a peaceful atmosphere geared toward couples. It has a dedicated beach area for guests, a pool, a jacuzzi, a spa, five restaurants, and four bars, including a popular swim-up bar. The all-inclusive rate covers meals, snacks, 24-hour room service, and a minibar with soft drinks, beer, and snacks.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, Punta Cana

There are plenty of family-friendly resorts in the Dominican Republic, but Hard Rock's Punta Cana outpost has some extra-fun amenities that set it apart. The 1,775-room property features 13 pools, a bowling alley, an arcade, an escape room, a kids club, and even a "Flowrider" surf simulator where you can catch a wave in the main pool. Guests can enjoy all-inclusive meals and snacks at nine restaurants, nightly entertainment, live music, and 24-hour room service. Other activities include laser tag, volleyball, water aerobics, and tennis. Taxes, gratuities, Wi-Fi, and unlimited phone calls to the continental U.S. and Canada are also included.

Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana, Punta Cana

Looking for a budget-friendly beach vacation? Head to Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana , an affordable all-inclusive resort with 756 guest rooms and family-friendly amenities, including a kids club for children ages four to 12. Guests can also access the restaurants and entertainment at the nearby Grand Bahia Principe Bavaro and Grand Bahia Principe Turquesa . Drinks at hotel bars are included, and guest room mini-bars are restocked daily with snacks, juice, soft drinks, and beer. The rate also covers one hour daily for kayaks, tennis, catamarans, and snorkeling.

"Making the most of this all-inclusive spot with glistening ocean vistas means making the most of the neighboring resorts. Translation: With a stay at Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana, you have access to the dining spots and facilities at neighboring Grand Bavaro and Grand Turquesa, too. So, pro-tip — after staying at the spot in September 2020 — dabble in ‘em all and don’t be bashful," recommends T+L contributor Jesse Scott.

The Level at Meliá Punta Cana Beach Resort, Punta Cana

While most all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic charge guests extra for spa treatments, this adults-only Meliá resort on Bavaro Beach has built them into a wellness-focused package. Guests who book The Level Wellness Suites can enjoy one spa treatment per day, aromatherapy, a vitamin C shower infuser, and a wellness concierge and app to help them reach their health goals. The Level guests can also access a private check-in area, VIP amenities, a private pool, premium brand drinks and snacks, and exclusive dining at Quimera Restaurant, in addition to the rest of the 287-room hotel's all-inclusive offerings.

"In September 2020 – off COVID’s peak and in major need of a wellness retreat - I landed on a stay at Meliá Punta Cana Beach," says Scott. "It brought me back to life and, for a solo or couple’s wellness adventure, it totally reinvigorates on a multitude of fronts. Built in 2019, the adults-only resort’s rooms are draped in white columns with tan and gold touches, with beachside suites coming at a premium. Speaking of premium, Meliá’s Level package is worth the upgrade and includes access to a private pool, lounge, and wellness ritual, among other perks."

Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa, Punta Cana

With 750 luxury suites, live DJ music, and seemingly endless activities, Breathless is an exciting adults-only beachfront destination. How to Get to the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the second-largest island in the Caribbean. It offers several international airports. After several trip to DR over the years, I am sharing the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

The Punta Cana International Airport

With service from several international carriers, including direct flights from Britain, France and South America. U.S. travelers will find American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

WiFi is available, and restrooms are located near the immigration line.

A valid passport with more than six months before expiration is required for your trip is required. e aren’t required to enter the country. A 30-day tourist visa will be stamped into your passport upon entry. The Dominican Republic Entry fee is included in your flight.

The Dominican Republic requires U.S. Passengers to fill out an online Immigration form before they arrive. Before my last trip in December 2023, my airline sent me a link (Delta Airlines).

On departure, U.S. residents can opt for the automated immigration lines. You will just scan your passport and pass through a gate.

The Punta Cana Airport features enhanced security measures with pat-downs. A TSA pre-check line isn’t available.

The departure area is fully air-conditioned and features a duty-free shop and another shop specializing in Dominican Republic products, like rum and cigars.

Find American fast food in the departures area, like Wendy’s, Sbarro, Nathan’s, Cinnabon and Baskin-Robbins. Also find a bar for pre-departure cocktails.

Find a small play structure for younger kids. The Punta Cana International Airport also features a nursing room.

Other International Airports in The Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo International Airport (SDQ) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Santiago International Airport (STI) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines and Jet Blue Airlines.

Resort Review: Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana

Airport transfers.

When leaving the arrivals hall at the Punta Cana International Airport, a line of cab drivers will greet you. I recommend arranging transportation with your resort or hotel before arriving. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

There are several transportation and tour counters in the area. I usually check in with my transportation company to find my driver. Often they are waiting a short distance from the airport and pull up after you arrive.

Most cars in the Dominican Republic are air-conditioned.

What Language is Used in the Dominican Republic

The Dominicans speak Spanish though most understand and speak some English. Knowing some basic Spanish is helpful, especially the basics.

Hola = Hello

Buenos Días = Good Morning

Buenos Noches = Good Night

Muchas Gracias = Thank you very much

What Money is  Used in the Dominican Republic

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (RD$). Though the U.S. Dollar is widely accepted. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Change will most likely be given in U.S. dollars. For those who want local currency, ATMs are located in hotel lobbies as well as the airport.

Credit Cards are widely accepted throughout the Dominican Republic. It’s advised to use a credit card for large purchases like lodging. Though use cash for souvenirs and small purchases. Tips are accepted and appreciated in DR from spa services to daily maid service.

Phone Service in the Dominican Republic

Since I travel internationally, I have a global plan through my U.S. carrier. When I land I just switch over to the local service provider. I just use my data to check email and messages. The provider I used throughout my trip to DR was Altice.

Most all-inclusive resorts offer extensive WiFi for their guests. Most of the time this service is included. This is one of the top things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Where to Stay in Punta Cana

Most resorts in the Punta Cana area are all-inclusive resorts. Travelers will find everything from luxurious and laid-back adult all-inclusives to family resorts with waterparks.

Some resorts are divided into an adults-only side with an adjoining family side, each with separate restaurants, pools and gathering places. Other resorts offer buildings dedicated to adults or families.

With several different resort areas in Punta Cana, visitors will choose from laid-back La Romana to buzzy Bavaro. Cap Cana boasts Juanilla Beach, one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.

Near Punta Cana, Cap Cana boasts wide white sand beaches with lots of palm trees. A resort community, Cap Cana features the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana and the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana. Both of these properties opened in 2021 and offer a luxurious all-inclusive resort experience.

Nearby is Sanctuary Cap Cana, another luxury all-inclusive resort. Located on Juanillo Beach, it offers pristine white sand with mature palm trees.

Cap Cana is located just south of the Punta Cana International Airport. The Cap Cana Marina offers boat excursions. This area is ideal for watersports like kayaking, SUP boarding and sailing.

La Romana offers a quieter resort experience. It’s located west of the Punta Cana International Airport and along the Chavón River.

I stayed at the Hilton La Romana, an all-inclusive resort with tropical landscaping. It is close to Bayahibe, a resort town with shopping and dining. It is also the departure point for boat excursions to Isla Saona, part of the Parque National Cotubanama.

Bavaro features the largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. It’s north of the Punta Cana International Airport and on the Atlantic Ocean.

Along this strip of beach, often called the Coconut Coast, resorts are shoulder-to-shoulder. The white sand beaches are the draw though some resorts offer bigger beaches than others so research is key.

Bavaro is quite busy. The resorts tend to be louder and the beaches busier.

Best Beaches in Punta Cana

With about 200 beaches in the Dominican Republic, it can be hard to choose. DR boasts 25 Blue Flag Beaches (more than the U.S.), known for their conservation and recycling efforts.

Macao Beach –Known for its surfing area.

Bavaro Beach –This beach extends for 30 miles and features many all-inclusive resorts. It is a favorite.

Juanillo Beach- -Exceptionally wide beach with mature palm trees. Since there are fewer resorts and many are gated, this beach is less crowded.

Bayahibe Beach –Located in the village and a frequent departure point for excursions to Soana Island.

Note : Nude sunbathing isn’t a common in the Dominican Republic. Even topless sunbathing isn’t a thing in DR. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Saona Island

Part of the Cotubanama National Park, Saona Island is a pristine tropical escape. With a lack of development, including hotels, it is an ideal day trip.

Christopher Columbus discovered the island and named it after a friend. It was the location for the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The easiest way to reach the island is via a catamaran tour. Most trips stop at Palmilla Swimming Area, a shallow area that adults can touch the bottom in the turquoise water.

Most trips depart from Bayahibe and take 8 to 10 hours. Lunch and drinks are usually included in the tour.

Popular Punta Cana Excursions

Arrange for a tour during your visit to the Dominican Republic to learn more about its agriculture and animals.

Feed a Spider Monkey.

Learn about the chocolate production.

Watch a cigar rolling.

Walk through a sugar cane field.

Take a Zipline through the tree canopy.

Learn about coffee production.

Is the Water Safe in the Dominican Republic

While visiting the Dominican Republic, drink bottled water. The tap water is NOT safe to drink. So drink bottled water exclusively during your visit. I even brush my teeth with bottled water or mouthwash. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stay away from the following:

  • Tap or well water
  • Ice made with tap or well water
  • Drinks made with tap or well water (such as reconstituted juice)
  • Unpasteurized milk

Complimentary bottled water should be available in your room during your entire stay. Water fountains are not the norm in the Dominican Republic.

What to Wear in the Caribbean

Need some help with what to wear? Here are all the best tips and products for your trip.

Beach Packing List

Liquor safety.

Practice some basic precautions during your stay. The drinking age in the Dominican Republic is 18.

  • Make sure all bottled beverages are sealed with their factory seals in your mini fridge.
  • Don’t drink from open liquor bottles in your room.
  • Watch bartenders make your beverages.
  • Before drinking, smell your cocktail.
  • Drink slowly.
  • Eat before and while you are drinking.
  • Drink bottled water while drinking alcohol.

Food Safety

According to the CDC, stay away from the following:

  • Food served at room temperature
  • Food from street vendors
  • Raw or soft-cooked (runny) eggs
  • Raw or undercooked (rare) meat or fish
  • Unwashed or unpeeled raw fruits and vegetables
  • Unpasteurized dairy products
  • ”Bushmeat” (monkeys, bats, or other wild game)

Insect Safety in DR

According to the CDC, protect yourself by doing the following:

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on your skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

I recommend the following product to treat your clothes before departure, available from Amazon.

Make an Appointment at Travel Clinic

I headed to CDC.gov for Caribbean travel information, including required immunizations. My family practitioner advised me to make an appointment at a travel clinic.

At the travel clinic, my nurse practitioner advised a Typhoid vaccine, along with Hepatitis A and a booster vaccine for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis since it had been five years since my last shot. I was covered for the MMR vaccine, or measles, mumps and rubella.

The nurse practitioner also discussed mosquito safety since dengue fever is sometimes an issue for the Caribbean. I packed a 3 oz. container of insect repellant and used it when I walked through a shady area and in the evenings.

Along with vaccines, she discussed traveler’s diarrhea (TD). She advised I start taking probiotics before and during my trip. I also drank a dose of Emergen-C daily, especially after long international flights. I packed some over-the-counter medications for TD symptoms since it’s the most common illness during travel.

Fear of TD–Traveler’s Diarrhea

I have a fear of TD. Who has time for that? I didn’t want to find a Dominican pharmacy, so I packed all the supplies I might need. Here’s what the CDC recommends.

  • Antiacid—like Tums
  • Pepto-Bismol tablets
  • Imodium tablets
  • Oral Rehydration Salts—available at REI
  • Prescription Antibiotics—prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner based on your itinerary.

If you get seasickness, here are the top tips and products to reduce the effects .

First Aid Supplies

Accidents happen so pack a basic first aid kit to be prepared, even for minor scrapes and blisters.

  • Pain Reliever
  • Motion Sickness pills, like non-drowsy Dramamine
  • Cough Drops
  • Cold Medication—I prefer a separate Day and Night version.
  • Anti-Histamine—like Benadryl
  • Triple antibiotic cream—like Neosporin
  • Anti-Itch Cream
  • Anti-septic wipes

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

LaGrange woman back home after falling ill on cruise, being hospitalized in the Dominican Republic

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Loretta Cox is back home in LaGrange and reunited with her family, after a medical emergency while overseas led to her being in a coma in the Dominican Republic.

Atlanta News First reported two weeks ago that it was thanks to the community’s help she could be medically flown back to the United States.

Now, we were there as she was getting settled back in Georgia and feeling much better.

“It was amazing to see it and to live to tell it-- the love that people had shown,” said Loretta Cox.

“I got to my driveway and I started crying. I couldn’t get out of the car without crying, because I was just so overjoyed that I was home,” she continued.

She had a terrifying ordeal on what should have been a dream vacation.

While on a Carnival cruise to the Bahamas a few weeks ago, she said she had been enjoying her evening, when she suddenly felt like she needed to lie down.

“As I was headed to my room, I was getting short of breath,” she explained.

Since she has asthma, she thought she may just need her inhaler. All she remembered were two teens calling the medic and a woman assisting her, before it went dark.

“Because her lungs filled up with fluid, her lungs collapsed, and that’s why she had to be placed on a ventilator,” said her daughter, Aldes Brooks.

Cox was taken to the nearest hospital in the Dominican Republic, where she stayed for two days in a coma in the intensive care unit.

“It was a money game,” said Brooks. “It was like we were paying a ransom to keep our mother alive.”

The total cost for those two days, she said, was about $50,000.

Word spread quickly, through social media and word of mouth, that her mother needed help, and in just 24 hours, community members donated the roughly $25,000 needed for a medical air transport back to the United States.

“It was friends. It was family. It was church members. It was strangers, people who had seen her at Wal Mart!” Brooks said.

Cox was treated at Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale for about a week when she finally woke up, her husband by her side.

“I was so happy to see a familiar face when I woke up!”

She said she is beyond grateful to the people who helped her and gave her the precious gift of time with her children and grandchildren.

“Thank you,” she said. “Cherish each day you have. Cherish it.”

She is now undergoing testing at Emory to figure out what caused the fluid buildup in her lungs that day.

Brooks noted they had to pay out-of-pocket because her mother did not have medical travel insurance.

They now advise, whether going on a cruise or traveling in general, to purchase it and look up what all it includes.

They also encourage people traveling to places where you do not necessarily need a passport, like the Bahamas, to get one anyway.

Cox said she would have had a much harder time getting back into the U.S. from the Dominican Republic without it.

There is an online fundraiser for those who still want to help donate to her medical expenses.

International travel to return to Rockford airport

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Those looking to go on an international vacation will soon be able to fly out of Rockford once again.

From passenger numbers to cargo success and possible redevelopment, the Chicago Rockford...

On Wednesday, the Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) announced the return of nonstop flights to destinations in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. Passenger flights to international destinations from Rockford were stalled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

“Ever since the pandemic drastically changed passenger travel, we’ve been working with ALG Vacations to bring their Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flights back to our airport so we can further serve people in our region,” said RFD Executive Director Zack Oakley. “The Rockford market is enthusiastic about travel – that’s something we’re listening to, advocating for, and working tirelessly on so RFD can provide more great travel opportunities to our community. We hope to continue offering more destinations in the years to come,” he added.

The Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flights on GlobalX Airlines will begin on Jan. 24, 2025. The flights will be offered by Apple Vacations and its sister companies, Funjet Vacations and Travel Impressions. Oakley explains that so long as customers keep booking these destinations, they’ll work with Apple Vacations to keep them.

“Flights that go out of Rockford, for the most part, are usually on the fuller side, usually 90 to 92 percent full. We’ve got great community support on these flights, so we just have to continue that,” Oakley says. “The fastest way to add more flights is to show support for the flights we already have.”

“Rockford has been a successful market for vacation companies like our Apple Vacations, Funjet Vacations, and Travel Impressions brands for many years, and we’re excited to bring this service back to RFD for 2025,” said Ray Snisky, group president at ALG Vacations.

John Sturm, the president of Lindstrom Travel , believes this is an opportunity for RFD passenger flights to reclaim levels they haven’t seen since the pandemic. He says the destinations chosen give travelers a variety of destinations to choose from giving them the chance for much more than a just a beach vacation.

“You only have like a two-month time to go there so we’ll be hearing shortly from people” Sturm says. “I think once they start promoting it people are really going to start going.”

The airport released the following flight schedules:

Costa Rica:

  • Fridays, starting January 24, 2025

Cancun, Riviera Maya, Mexico:

  • Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, starting January 25, 2025

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic:

  • Thursdays and Sundays, starting January 26, 2025

For more information about passenger service at the Rockford airport, visit its website .
