This tutorial will teach you how to share an HTML5 interactive map you've created with our software on Facebook. In this example, we'll use a US map, but you could embed a world map or any other map we sell .

By default, Facebook will not allow you to embed any HTML within a post or page. However, you can embed your map as a static image and let users click on a link to view your interactive map. The image will appear in your followers' feeds and you'll get all the benefits of a standard Facebook post.

Here's what you need to do:

Save your map, purchase , and register your license ( Options --> Register License ).

Go to the Finish tab and scroll down to the Advanced section:

Click on the PNG button to download a screenshot of your map as an image. Remember where you save this file on your computer for later.

Click on Options --> Map Hosting --> Host Map and then copy the url of the webpage that displays the hosted map.

This is the link to your interactive map that you'll share with others. Your url should have this format:

This is a read-only url that allows people to view your map without editing it. DO NOT share your secret customization url (which starts with https://simplemaps.com/custom/... ) publicly. If you do that, anyone with the link will be able to edit your map.

After installing, you’re prompted to select countries, states, provinces, regions where you’ve traveled on a world map created in Flash. While the map is large and easy to access, using the three screens to zoom and move around does present some difficulty. When you’re clicking on countries, each click toggles between blue, green and red, representing that you’ve visited, wanted to visit or have lived there. (These colors are not that well defined and initially it can be confusing why the colors keep changing with each click.)

Once you’ve selected your regions, the application installs a smaller map on your profile page for all your friends to see where you’ve been. You can also compare your map with your friends’ maps and see who’s really been to more places. “Where I’ve Been” is the clear winner in the travel map category.

A close second is Cities I’ve Visited by TripAdvisor.com . Instead of selecting the geographic regions, you select individual cities, and pins are placed on the map for each city that you’ve visited. The selection process is quick, and you can choose between popular cities or the list on the travel map. The map also automatically zooms and aligns to include all the cities that you’ve visited. We were surprised that more features were not included to tell your friends about your trips.

There are many applications similar to Where I’ve Been and Cities I’ve Visited that require you to create an account on the application developer’s website, and some even require that build your travel map in their interface. You should skip these clones and stick with these two applications if you want to show your friends how worldly you are.

To plan future trips or to tell people specifically about past trips, you need move beyond the travel map applications. One of the easiest trip-specific applications is the Journey Miles application by Chris Poe. The application lets you describe past trips in great detail, create a trip map using Google maps, and even lets you link to a Facebook Photo Album related to the trip. You can also schedule trips in the future, invite your friends and see who is in for the summer road trip to the beach.

One of the older and more popular trip focused application is the Trips application by SideStep.com . One disappointment with this application is the “Invite all your friends screen”. You need to carefully skip this screen or you’re going to be that guy/girl that spams his/her friends with application invites. Once you install Trips, it’s easy to create past trips and describe them in great detail. You can also include future trips and invite your friends, almost like the Facebook Event interface. Overall, it’s a solid application that just needs a few updates.

For people actually traveling or planning an immediate trip, there are two hostel applications that you can use research hostel locations if you’re a hostel person. Hostels by Hostelbook.com lets you read and write reviews on Hostels you’ve stayed at or are considering and even make a reservation with Hostels. The Hostel application by Bukpak lets you see research Hostels in different cities and also includes pricing at each location. It would be good to see a combination of these two functions as they both add value to travelers.

And if you really need to visit a friend there is Flight Finder by SmarterTravel.com . This application lets you select a friend and choose some travel dates to be presented with flight options from the SmartTravel.com site. Your friend’s hometown is automatically current inside the Flight Finder application. All flights are displayed in a separate window on the SmartTravel.com site; the experience would be much better in the Facebook environment.

Lastly, if you’re overseas and want to know the local currency conversion, the Currency Converter application by Oanda will provide real-time currency conversion exchange rates for most major currencies.

Now Facebook Wants You To Share Where You’re “Traveling To”

Serendipitous meetups with friends while traveling make us happy and Facebook wants to be the portal to that joy. So this week it quietly rolled out a new feature that lets you share where you’re “traveling to”. Facebook’s Page mentioned it today, so I asked the company which said that after some testing, “traveling to” is now available to all users. It has big potential to bring Facebook valuable data on what’s important to us.

The “traveling to” option is found within the activity and emotion sharing smiley-face button on the Facebook status composer on both web and mobile. One you select it, you can choose a destination city, but not a departure and return time. Facebook will then append “traveling to Boston” with a little plane icon. Some destinations get their own special emoji, like a Statue Of Liberty for New York, or a Hollywood sign for Los Angeles.

(Note: I wouldn’t recommend sharing these posts publicly though, as you don’t want to advertise your absence from home for security reasons. It might be nice if Facebook warned people about that.)

Without “traveling to”, most us just end up posting “I’m coming to New York, who wants to hang out?”. But I’ve found I got little engagement with those posts. If users happen to check in at an airport, Facebook would ask where they were heading and show that in the post, but few people know about this and checking into airports just feels lame and braggadocious. Some people use third-party app like TripIt to share their itineraries.

All these options will probably see less usage now that there’s an easily accessible “traveling to” feature. And yes, Path has automatically done this for a while by auto-publishing when you appear in a new city. But as Facebook has proven over and over, it doesn’t care who did it first. It wants to do it at scale.

What’s puzzling about the feature is that Facebook confirms that sharing where you’re  “traveling to” won’t change anything else about how Facebook works. But it should.

When you’re in a different city, your Facebook should be different too. It should show you relevant stories from local friends and ads from nearby businesses instead of ones where you live, and let people know you’re in town so you can meet up. None of these happen right now…

…But I wouldn’t be surprised if they did soon. Facebook’s whole value to users and its business model depend on relevancy — knowing what you want to see. Explicitly telling it where you’re traveling to is an extremely strong signal that content from or about your destination is more important to you.

And for its own business as well as making the ads I have to see anyways more interesting, it should show me promos for local businesses where I’ve traveled to. Yes, most people hate ads no matter what, but I’d rather see one for a bagel shop in New York I could try out while I’m there than one back in San Francisco that I’ll forget about before I return. (Plus, SF bagels are a joke. Someone vacuum-seal and send me some from Manhattan, stat.)

A frequent complaint about Facebook is that it’s actually isolating. We sit at home reading News Feed instead of actually calling or visiting friends. “Traveling to” could let Facebook better fulfill its mission to connect us. After all, life on the move is a lot more fun when it’s not spent alone in hotel rooms.
