Arriving at the end of the world city: Ushuaia

As soon as you arrive in Ushuaia , a properly identified person from Explora will be waiting to take you to your accommodation. The city is located at the southernmost point of the entire planet , for this reason it is popularly known as the "City at the end of the world". Depending on the time you arrive in the city, it will be possible to take some tours on your own through the streets near the hotel. We recommend that you visit some local restaurants and taste the exotic Centolla dish, which is a rare crustacean from the region similar to a giant crab. Important: Be prepared for the cold. The ideal is to wear layers-style sweaters so that you can take them off as you walk and as your body warms up. A second skin, an intermediate coat and a raincoat complete the three layers. Wear Trekking shoes - or equivalent - that are comfortable. Take a pair of gloves, hats and whatever you think is convenient to protect yourself. Even with a cloudy day, never forget the sunscreen.

Walking with Penguins at Martillo Island

What will you do Unique and indescribable experience! We met at the tourist port of Ushuaia and set off on Route 3. On the way, we cut the Andes Mountains and followed the path enjoying the magnificent view of this place. Our first stop will be to see the typical and famous Flag Trees. They are trees that have sloped a lot due to the strong winds of the Argentine Patagonia . They are beautiful and seeing them is a truly unique experience! We continued on our journey and soon arrived at the legendary Estancia Harberton . It was the island's first resort, having been founded in 1886 by Thomas Bridges and is located on the shores of the Beagle Channel. We got to know the resort and went to the Acatushúnde Aves and Mammals Austral Museum, near the pier. In this museum we can see the bones of whales, penguins, sea lions and dolphins. We then left for the most anticipated part of our adventure: Martillo Island. We entered a semi rigid boat, where we sailed for about 20 minutes until we reached the island, where we disembarked. Arriving there we see thousands of penguins !! Really a special tour !! We walk for 1h between the different species of penguins (mainly, Papúase de Magallães penguins). We saw beautiful chicks, with their gray fur, newly born in their nests, we can see them in their different stages of life. A really exciting and contagious adventure !! In the summer, penguins settle on the island, along with other birds such as skúas, petreles, cormoranes and seagulls. So, in addition to living with the wonderful penguins on our island, we also see these birds endemic to the southern Patagonia. After our careful walk around the island, we take the boat and then transport back to the center of Ushuaia for this incredible experience. Full day tour to Torres Del Paine National Park Vip

Departure from your hotel to the Milodon Cave located 24 kilometers north of Puerto Natales. Before reaching the cave, the access path passes by the "Silla del Diablo" (Devil's Chair), a name that comes from the popular imagination given to a rocky structure that looks like an armchair and which is said to have been the "seat" of the Mylodon and which legend has transformed into the "devil". At the end of the visit, we will continue along the new access road to Torres del Paine National Park, where we will be able to observe lagoons and mountain ranges along the way. Then, it is possible to admire the beautiful landscape around us from the Lago Grey viewpoint (view of the Grey Glacier, the Paine Massif and Lago del Toro). A couple of kilometers ahead, it is possible to observe the Cuernos del Paine, reaching the fork that leads to the Lake Grey area. In this sector we will be able to make a pleasant walk along the shore of Grey Lake and if the conditions help us, it is possible to access the viewpoint of Grey Peninsula. Back in the parking lot of the Nursery, we take the route to a restaurant located inside the park to take a moment to rest with the option of lunch. (Lunch not included in the rate). At the end of this refreshing break, we started the second stage of our visit to Torres del Paine National Park heading for the Salto Grande sector. We will visit the Nordenskjold Lake Viewpoint and continue to enjoy various views on our undulating route that gradually brings us closer to the Laguna Amarga sector. Full day Trekking to base Torres - Torres del Paine National Park

Departure from Puerto Natales at 07:00 am and direct transfer to Las Torres sector where we will arrive at "Reserva Cerro Paine", starting point of the trail. There we will receive a previous instructive talk from our guide. Start of the walk. We take the road towards the valley and after 10 minutes of walking, we walk on an old suspension bridge that crosses the river Ascencio. About 150 meters later, appears a fork: to the left leads to the Base the towers. Then follow a zigzag of marked slope and sparse vegetation for an hour. The ascent continues and passes along another side and after 45 minutes you reach the Chilean campsite on the opposite bank of the river Ascencio, in the shadow of a beech forest, with moderate slope, crossing several slopes that fall from the Admiral Nieto. After about an hour and 10 minutes from the Chilean campsite, at 700 masl., you reach the foot of the moraine that gives access to the viewpoint. From this point, the path increases its slope. First it goes along a slope and under the shade of the small trees located on the edge of the moraine, but above the path is lost as such and must continue ascending among the rocks, some of which are marked to show the route. After about half an hour from the sign to 700 MASL, you reach the east end of the lagoon, from where you have a wonderful view of the three towers (Central, Monzino, Dagostini) and the Hills comb and nest of condors. After resting and having lunch in this extraordinary and unique scenic context on the planet, we begin our return on the same path until we reach the starting point, where our driver will be waiting to return at the end of the day to Puerto Natales.

Ice trekking on the Perito Moreno glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most beautiful and emblematic landscapes in Patagonia. Take the opportunity to see it in the most varied and intense ways !! This unmissable experience begins in Porto "Bajo de las sombra", where we embark on a 15-minute navigation to cross the Brazo Rico. We got very close to the Glacier and at that moment we have a fantastic perception of how big it is. Mountain guides will take you even closer to the glacier to catch crampones and form groups of up to 20 people to start the approach crossing. Already on the glacier and with the crampons in place, the world takes a new perspective: blue lagoons, deep cracks, huge sinks, magical pits. During the walk of about 1h30, the guides explain about the flora and fauna and about the general glaciology of the region, explaining about the specific phenomenon of ruptures of the Perito Moreno Glacier. We sit on the glacier to rest and we will have time to enjoy and take beautiful pictures, and if you want to have a snack (not included). Fantastic experience being there, sitting on the glacier surrounded by mountains. With the energy restored, we continued walking until we returned to the starting point, where we removed the staples and went down to the port. We returned to the vessel satisfied and with this new adventure to tell. We then pass the catwalks to see the Perito Moreno Glacier from the front. We see the beautiful shade of blue from this immense glacier and we take the opportunity to photograph it with a more open angle of view, watching as it rises from the lake to the top of the mountains enjoying a hot drink. Includes Transfer to and from the hotel Bilingual mountain guide 1 hour visit to the catwalks Approximately 1:30 hike over the glacier Grampones Does not include Entrance to Los Glaciares National Park. Tours to Patagonia

Why take a patagonia tour with explore.

Covering 1 million km2, the national park of Patagonia is a vast UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its spectacular scenery and diverse wildlife. The jewel in the crown is the Torres del Paine National Park, one of the most impressive mountain areas on earth. Taking its name from the Tehuelche word  Paine , meaning ‘blue’, the park encompasses stunning scenery, with constantly-changing views of peaks, glaciers and icebergs, vividly-colored lakes of turquoise, ultramarine and grey, and quiet green valleys filled with wild flowers.

On our Adventures in Patagonia trip, choose between a comfortable wildlife hike or a more challenging 22km trek to one of the park's most impressive lookouts. Keen walkers will relish the moderate-to-challenging Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine walking tour, which travels through the heart of Los Glaciares National Park to the magnificent Fitz Roy Massif, and includes the iconic 'W Trek'.

Most of our tours are small group tours , which mean you'll be joined by like-minded adventurers and an expert local leader throughout. If you'd prefer to go without a group, our Adventures in Patagonia Private Tour  follows the same itinerary as the small group tour, but with private guides for the key sites.

FAQs about our Patagonia tours

When is the best time to go to Patagonia? Argentina’s summer is from December-February, so the best time to travel is throughout this period as well as the ‘shoulder season’ – roughly from the end of October to start of April. Because it’s so far south in the Southern Hemisphere, the weather is really unpredictable so we really only recommend traveling during this period. Winters (June-August) in Patagonia can be extremely cold and windy.

What is accommodation like in Patagonia?   Patagonia is an area of small towns that give access to the great outdoors, so the accommodation here is all very well-located. Travelers to Patagonia are after a comfortable night’s sleep in accommodation that makes the most of its surroundings, and this is exactly what our accommodation in Patagonia offers.

What should I pack for a trip to Patagonia? Patagonia’s weather is erratic, so packing for all weathers is essential. One day it can be clear blue skies from start to end, while the following day the winds could bring the clouds rolling in. A windproof, waterproof jacket is a must-have, along with walking poles for the hiking. Comfortable walking boots or shoes are necessary, and sunglasses, suncream and lipbalm with sun protection will all come in handy. In the evenings, comfortable, casual clothes with a warm fleece or jumper are perfect for going to the local restaurants. You don’t need anything fancy or smart with you – everyone in Patagonia dresses for the outdoors and the elements, so comfort is key.

What are the best hikes in Patagonia?  By far the most famous trek in Patagonia is the W Trek in Torres del Paine National Park. This five-day trek is arguably the most mind-blowing and scenic trek in Patagonia - each day is full of glaciers, snow-capped peaks and emerald lagoons, with constant views of the granite spires – or towers - that give Torres its name. Aside from the W Trek, you can’t escape incredible scenery in Patagonia, with the Fitz Roy Massif in Chalten giving Torres del Paine a run for its money. Here, the classic trek to Laguna de los Tres is the most well-known hike, taking hikers to the emerald lagoon of Los Tres at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy. Another shorter but equally iconic hike is a trek on the ice of Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park. This enormous natural masterpiece calves off at an incredible rate - hiking on the ice itself is a unique way to get up close.

Is the water in Patagonia safe to drink? Water is safe to drink in most places in the park. If you’re worried, we always recommend travelling with a Water-to-go bottle, a reusable bottle with a filter that eliminated over 99.9% of all microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source. Look after your health, and protect beautiful Patagonia from single-use plastics. Win-win. Is Patagonia a good destination for solo travellers? Patagonia is a great destination to travel solo with a small group. And on an Explore trip you’ll be in great company – around 50% of people on our group trips are travelling solo. Our trips attract people from all over the world who love to explore, discover and share their passion for travel. The experiences you share and the friends you make along the way are the reasons why so many solo travellers travel with us again and again.

Laguna Larga This easy, half-day, 3-mile hike takes about 1.5 hours with an ascent of 182 feet. Leave the lodge by van and begin your walk along a natural path made by the guanacos, then along the bank of the Larga Lagoon to see gigantic calcium rocks. On this excursion you will probably see the guanacos that move through the park and perhaps a guanaco skeleton or two, since you are now in puma hunting grounds. You will also see Nordenskjöld Lake and mount Almirante Nieto. Finally, return to the Explora lodge by van.

Patagonia Travel Guide

From majestic mountain peaks to winding waterways, explore Patagonia’s boundless beauty. Here’s the definitive Patagonia travel guide

explora tours patagonia

How far would you go to escape from it all? Would you venture to “the end of the world?” One of South America’s most iconic regions, Patagonia’s rugged terrain offers a full range of adventures, from exploring glaciers to traversing mountain ranges, to kayaking pristine waterways. Untouched by the trappings of modern-day life, we recommend these three adventures in a region renowned as “the end of the world.” Here’s the definitive Patagonia travel guide.

Perito Moreno Glacier

© Vince Croos/Pixabay

Patagonia is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, including vast glaciers, ancient fjords, and some of the highest mountain ranges in the world so it’s no wonder adventurers want to travel to Patagonia. Perhaps the most renowned of Patagonia’s outdoor destinations is the Perito Moreno Glacier, a massive expanse of ice estimated to be 18,000 years old—and still on the move!

Accessing the glacier begins in El Calafate, a bucolic town that serves as the gateway to Glacier National Park. From here, adventurers pass through the visitor center, which serves as a jumping off point for travel in Patagonia to the various trails and pathways leading to the frozen giant known as Perito Moreno.

As you wander along the boardwalks that hug the glacier, you’ll find yourself in awe of its otherworldly form, contemplating the behemoth that stands before you, extending 19 miles (30km) in length and standing almost 200 feet (60m) in height. Lucky visitors may also witness sheets of ice, some as large as commercial aircraft, breaking off the glacier’s façade and crashing into the sea with a thunderous boom.

If you prefer to kick the intensity up a notch and scale the glacier itself, we recommend booking a glacier trekking tour with a Patagonia travel guide. They can provide you with the equipment and expertise required to safely tackle this challenge.

Visit a Penguin Colony

explora tours patagonia

Head to Puerto Madryn on Patagonia’s northeastern coast, where the arid landscapes meet the vibrant marine ecosystem of the Atlantic Ocean. But seriously, go for the penguins!  The highlight here is Punta Tombo, South America’s largest Magellanic penguin colony.

Along the peninsula, you’ll find tens of thousands of these happy little creatures nesting and frolicking along the shoreline. The waters of Puerto Madryn also serve as a crucial breeding ground for southern right whales, sea lions, and elephant seals.

After a long day of immersing yourself in marine life, retire to the town of Gaiman, a charming enclave settled by Welsh immigrants over 200 years ago. Warm yourself in its tea houses, indulge in Welsh pastries, and explore this one-of-a-kind hamlet where Welsh traditions and Patagonian hospitality converge.

Hiking in El Chaltén

© Jorge Cachambi/Pexels

Imagine hiking leisurely through an idyllic Andean valley and reconnecting with nature, along the way. You can have this all when you travel to Patagonia. Check out the town of El Chaltén. A top-rated hiking destination, El Chaltén serves as a base for numerous excursions to the region’s myriad lakes, mountains, and forests. The most popular of these is a day trip to Laguna de los Tres, meaning “Lake of the Three,” named after the three towering peaks that overlook it – Mount FitzRoy, Cerro Torre, and Mount Poincenot. With its deep turquoise color, we highly recommend unpacking a lunch at the base of the lake and savoring one of the most spectacular views in the world. This is what makes travel to Patagonia so worthwhile.

Kayaking Patagonia

For those seeking their thrills on the water, Patagonia also has plenty to offer. One of the region’s most scenic kayaking tours takes you down the Rio de las Vueltas, or The Meandering River. Starting north of El Chaltén, in Desert Lake, kayakers paddle south, witnessing the dramatic shifts in landscape from lush lenga forests to snow-capped mountain passes, eventually culminating in majestic views of the three peaks—Mount FitzRoy, Cerro Torre, and Mount Poincenot. Guided by torrent ducks, white-throated condors, and red foxes along the way, you’ll wind down the river, knowing you’ve reached “the end of the world,” wondering why you didn’t get there sooner.

Hiking the W Circuit

explora tours patagonia

Patagonia’s status as a hiker’s paradise is world-renowned. Among the hiking trails on every outdoor enthusiasts’s bucket list is the legendary W Circuit, located in Torres del Paine National Park. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Torres del Paine National Park lies nestled between the Andes Mountains and the Patagonian Steppe. The region is home to towering granite peaks, shimmering glacial lakes, and sweeping grasslands that form a canvas of unparalleled beauty.

The W Circuit leads trekkers through the heart of the park, offering breathtaking views of the Paine Massif, Grey Glacier, and Valle Frances—three of the park’s most renowned destinations. The diverse ecosystems within the park also harbor a variety of wildlife, including guanacos, foxes, and elusive pumas.

When faced with choosing the three-day route or the five-day route, we say hang around for a while. After all, you’ve reached the end of the world—take a deep breath, unwind, and savor this extraordinary moment.”

Weather in Patagonia

Patagonia’s summer takes place from December to February, providing the most favorable conditions for outdoor activities. During the day, high temperatures average 57°F (14° C), while evening temperatures average 41° (5°C). Summer is also the season with the least amount of precipitation for Patagonia travel. However, summer is also the region’s peak season, so be aware that travel in Patagonia can become more intense. For those willing to trade cooler temperatures for smaller crowds, we recommend exploring Patagonia in autumn, when fewer crowds and a more intimate travel experience await.

Itineraries on some departure dates may differ, please select the itinerary that you wish to explore.

Our tour of Patagonia starts in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, on the southern shores of the Rio de la Plata. Since its founding by Pedro de Mendoza in 1536, the city has thrived on trade and its vibrant streets are a tapestry of European architectural styles, with Spanish, French and Italian classicism rubbing shoulders with the remnants of Victorian grandeur.

For those arriving in time, our tour leader will meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm for a welcome meeting followed by dinner for those who wish. There are no activities today, so you're free to arrive in Buenos Aires at any time. If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into either Aeroparque Internacional Jorge Newbery (AEP) or Ezeiza International Airport (EZE), a 30-minute or a one-hour drive respectively from our hotel. If you miss the welcome meeting, our tour leader will catch you up ASAP.

If your flight arrives earlier in the day, you might like to take in the atmosphere of the San Telmo district, with its impressive architecture, or head to one of the leafy parks in Palermo. Alternatively, you could enjoy a spot of people-watching at one of the sidewalk cafes in Porteno.

Accommodation:

Hotel Principado (or similar)

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Single room available

Meals provided: none.

Today, we'll experience the city as Portenos (Buenos Aires natives), exploring by local bus and on foot. Each neighbourhood of Buenos Aires has its own distinct character, with grand Italianate architecture sitting alongside winding cobbled streets or tree-lined avenues.

To get a feel for the heart of the city, we'll walk towards its founding point at the Plaza de Mayo, where the President's dusty-pink mansion is located. Every big event in Buenos Aires's history has been witnessed by the Plaza, from the continued protests of the 'Madres de la Plaza de Mayo', going back to Eva Peron's mass demonstrations in 1945. From here, we'll hop on a bus towards the vibrant neighbourhood of La Boca. Originally settled by Italian migrants, the area is famed for its bright houses, a ramshackle affair of corrugated iron, and the tango dancers who perform in the streets. We'll visit a local 'cafecito' during our tour, taking a traditional Porteno snack of coffee and pastries. We'll end our morning in bohemian San Telmo, with its small one-way streets, historic mansions and walls adorned with street art. Our tour leader will suggest lunch at a traditional restaurant here, for those who wish.

It's worth noting that our city tour will last around five hours and will involve several hours of walking to see the city's highlights.

This afternoon, you're free to explore more at your own pace. You could stay and explore San Telmo, which is particularly interesting when the antique market takes over the cobbled streets. Or visit Recoleta Cemetery, the final resting place of Argentine luminaries, including Eva Peron. For book lovers, the Ateneo Grand Splendid, set in a converted theatre, is one of the most impressive bookstores in the world.

This evening, we'll have an opportunity to enjoy something of Buenos Aires' nightlife, perhaps going to a tango show and soaking up the pulsating rhythms of the Latin dance.

Meals Provided: Breakfast

Today we'll transfer to the airport for our flight to Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, located on the Island of Tierra del Fuego at the very tip of the South American continent. Beyond this remote port lies the Beagle Channel and then the open waters of The Drake Passage, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans converge.

This afternoon is free to explore the city as you choose. You may wish to stay on land, visiting the old prison of Ushuaia, now the Maritime Museum and an excellent portrait of the harsh realities of life on these unforgiving oceans.

Alternatively, there are three different trips around the coast that allow you to get closer to the awesome nature in this part of the world:

1. Beagle Channel catamaran and penguin spotting. This five-hour excursion sees you taking a catamaran boat from Ushuaia through the Beagle Channel, cruising around Sea Lion Island, Bird Island, Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse and Martillo Island. During the trip, we'll try to spot sea lions, cormorants and other diverse wildlife. At Isla Martillo the catamaran approaches the beach to see the Magellanic Penguin colony. Please note that on this trip there are no landings, but it's a great overview of the incredible scenery in the Beagle Channel.

2. Harberton Estancia and Isla Martillo. This six-hour tour starts with a 90-minute drive to the Harberton Estancia, the oldest ranch in the Tierra del Fuego, dating back to the late 1800s. If the Estancia is open, you'll have the option of visiting the small museum inside for an additional fee, payable locally. The main reason for our trip here is to access the pier, which is the launching point for boats travelling to Isla Martillo - an island just 15 minutes offshore that's home to a large penguin colony. This excursion is run by the only company permitted to let visitors disembark and walk among the penguins. Magellanic penguins are the largest colony, but you may also see Gentoo penguins or King Emperor penguins. Taking an hour-long walk around the island with a guide, you'll discover these colonies before the 15-minute return boat ride and 90-minute drive back to Ushuaia.

3. Beagle Channel boat to Sea Lion Island and Bird Island. This last boat trip doesn't take you out to see the penguins, sailing just around the sea lion island and bird island. For those on a budget who may have seen penguins in other places, this is a great option to witness the area's wildlife and the bleak scenery of the Beagle Channel.

All excursions here in Ushuaia should be pre-booked before departure, preferably a minimum of three months prior to your trip. We cannot guarantee the availability of any of these excursions at any point.

Important note: flight schedules in Argentina change constantly. You may depart in the very early hours for your internal flight, and if so, breakfast will be taken in-flight rather than at the hotel. Alternatively, you may have a longer morning in Buenos Aires and depart in the late afternoon. Due to the changing nature of the flights, boat excursions may take place either on today's free afternoon, or on tomorrow's free afternoon on Day 4 of the trip.

Villa Brescia Hotel (or similar)

Tierra del Fuego translates as the Land of Fires and today we'll have time to explore the nearby national park. Separated from Patagonia by the waters of the Magellan Strait, Tierra del Fuego is a landscape of lakes, forest, and tundra, set beneath an imposing backdrop of rugged mountain peaks.

After driving 10 kilometres from Ushuaia to the park entrance, we'll drive through the park and take walks in several different sectors, along forest trails and to Lapataia Bay, taking in the expansive views and hopefully coming across some of the abundant wildlife in the area. Depending on the weather, we'll likely be undertaking three different walks, the longest being just under 2 kilometres / 1.25 miles. The undulating and well-trodden trails include some steps and light hilly terrain along the way. These peaks and valleys are filled with Lenga and Guindo trees which provide a rich haven for Patagonian grey foxes and condors. After lunch, we'll return to Ushuaia and have a free afternoon to further explore the area.

Across the three hikes, we'll be walking for around 4 kilometres / 2.5 miles, approximately 2 hours in total, with negligible ascent of 40m / 164 ft.

We have a long day of travel ahead of us today. After breakfast, we'll depart by public bus and spend our day travelling across Tierra del Fuego, crossing the Magellan Strait by ferry, and entering Chile, to complete our journey to Punta Arenas later this afternoon. The journey takes approximately ten hours including the ferry crossing and the border control (note, fruit and nuts cannot be taken into Chile).

One of the largest maritime settlements in the region, and the first Chilean settlement along the waters of the Magellan Strait, Punta Arenas was founded in the mid-19th century. It began its life as a penal colony and grew rich on sheep ranching, as well as the facilities it offered to ships traversing the dangerous route. Tonight, we'll have a chance to enjoy some local specialities, such as king crab, and perhaps sample some Chilean wines.

Hotel Isla Rey Jorge (or similar)

A landscape of rugged mountains, turquoise-coloured glacial lakes and spectacular wildlife, the majestic vistas of Chilean Patagonia are some of the most scenic and environmentally-diverse regions on the planet. Today, we'll travel north across the Patagonian steppe, with its desolate rolling plains and views of the peaks of the Cordillera.

Our first stop will be the city of Puerto Natales, our gateway into the sumptuous landscapes of the Torres del Paine National Park. Founded in 1911, this coastal town is a shipping port and a transport hub for those heading to the Paine Park. In fine weather, the cafes are filled with travellers and crowds gathering to witness the arrival of the Navimag boat from Puerto Montt.

After a brief stop in the town, we'll continue towards the park. Blessed with an abundance of natural wonders, the land was turned into a national park in 1959 and takes its name from the Tehuelche Indian word 'payne' meaning blue - a nod to the turquoise lakes within the park.

Our dramatic drive takes us via the Milodon Cave to our accommodation in Torres del Paine.

Cabanas Del Paine Hotel (or similar)

Meals Provided: Breakfast & Dinner

We have an active day ahead of us today, as we take on an eight-kilometre wildlife hike from Lake Sarmiento to the Laguna Amarga - a route which allows us to fully appreciate the majestic beauty of the Torres del Paine National Park.

At first glance, the area might seem barren but as we wander on, the wide variety of flora and fauna that call it home come to light. It's not unusual to see large numbers of guanacos here, as well as black-necked swans, upland geese, and pink flamingos. We may even be fortunate enough to spot condors in this vast territory of the elusive puma. As well as an abundance of natural sights, there are also more than 20 ancient cliff paintings, which are approximately 6,000 years old, in a hidden spot along the trail.

We'll continue by vehicle to the Cascada Paine, a waterfall backed by the jagged peaks of the Torres. From here, we'll continue to drive to the Blue Lagoon, where we can stroll around the beach to admire the towers from the same view that inspired Lady Florence Dixie to call them 'Cleopatra's needles' in her book Across Patagonia in 1880.

The 8.5 km / 15.6 mile hike around Lake Sarmiento will take approximately 3.5hrs, with 230m / 755ft of ascent, and 290m / 950ft descent.

For those who'd prefer something more challenging, you'll have the option of undertaking the 22-kilometre trek to the base of the Torres del Paine. The entire hike is full of breath-taking panoramas, as you cross glacial lakes, passing through river valleys and mountain forest, culminating in one of the most impressive lookouts in the park, over the spectacular Torres - imposing pinnacles of sharp granite that rise up over 2,600 metres to pierce the sky. The total ascent and descent of the hike is 950 metres, taking us from a starting altitude of 30 metres to the peak of 980 metres, over approximately ten hours. The terrain is hilly, with small and undulating slopes until the last kilometre, which is a steep push to the top.

If you'd like to undertake this trek, your local guide will need to know by day two of the trip, in order to ensure that a guide is in place for you. Please also note that the 22-kilometre Torres hike is not included.

We'll start our second day in Torres del Paine with a visit to a viewpoint where we can take in the panoramas of Lake Pehoe. Next, we'll head to Mirador Cuernos up a steep, partly gravel path, where we'll see views of the Valle del Frances. The hike to Mirador Cuernos is 2.5km / 1.5miles, and is expected to take around 2.5 hours, with 266m / 872ft of ascent and descent.

The afternoon is free to relax or explore more at your own pace. There are plenty of hikes on offer in the park, and two options for this afternoon are walking to the Escondida Lagoon or to the Nutria River (both walks are approximately a two-hour round-trip). Alternatively, there's the opportunity to take an excursion on the Serrano River, which will give you a closer look at the Paine Massif and the Serrano Glacier. The trip starts with a 40-minute speedboat journey up the Serrano River. A waterfall marks the end of the line here, and you'll disembark to walk for about 15 minutes through native forest towards a second boat, which takes to the beautiful Ultima Esperanza fjord. There's another 30-minute walk through the Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, to reach the Serrano Glacier Lagoon. After a look at the impressive glacier, you'll return the same way. This trip lasts approximately six hours, and you'll return to the dock around 8pm.

After breakfast, we'll depart for the Argentinean border at Cerro Castillo, crossing a vast plateau, where the only signs of life are the occasional estancia sheltering behind a windbreak of rare trees. Our destination is Calafate, situated on the southern shores of Lago Argentino, an unassuming little community that has been declared the national capital of the glacier region and the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park (approximately a six-hour drive).

Hotel Quijote (or similar)

Today we have a full-day visit to the awe-inspiring Perito Moreno Glacier, one of South America's most magnificent sights. Fed by the vast expanse of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the glacier covers some 250 square kilometres and presents us with an impressive list of statistics. It stretches over 30 kilometres and at its deepest point is over 700 metres thick. It's advancing at a rate of 700 metres per year but is estimated to calve off great chunks at probably the same rate, meaning that it has remained almost stationary for nearly a century. Whilst at the glacier, there'll be the chance to either trek on the ice (an age limit of 65 years applies due to National Park regulations) or take a boat ride to get closer to the glacier face.

Please note, the ice trek is very popular, and for those interested we advise pre-booking your spot with us before you travel to avoid disappointment. It involves walking on the ice itself using crampons. No experience is necessary, and you'll have a little time to practice walking with crampons before stepping onto the glacier. The walk is fairly easy, at a steady pace, with just a few very slight inclines. The terrain can be uneven in places, with seracs and glacial pools, however, an expert guide will be on hand to help you navigate the route.

Today we'll drive to the picturesque town of Chalten (approximately three hours), lying at the confluence of the De las Vueltas and Fitzroy Rivers in Los Glaciares National Park. Arriving at approximately 11am, we'll have lunch before checking in to our hotel, and the afternoon is free to explore the town and its surrounding trails.

Upon arrival to Chalten, you have the option to take a trip to Lago Del Desierto. This eight-hour trip includes a scenic drive to the lake, followed by a short sail across the waters and a hike up to the Vespignani Glacier lookout. You'll arrive back to the hotel in the evening. For those who'd prefer to remain around the Chalten area, the scenery is spectacular wherever you are, and there are many walking paths (self-guided) to discover.

Pudu Lodge (or similar)

Over the next day and a half, we'll have the opportunity to explore the stunning Fitz Roy Massif.

Today, we'll set out with a local guide, weather permitting, to cover the distance to the base of Mount Fitz Roy, whose unmistakable summit is almost permanently covered in cloud, a phenomenon that was believed to be smoke by the indigenous Tehuelche who named it Chalten (smoky mountain). The mountain reaches 3405 metres and our aim is to reach the base at around 1200 metres). Its forests and slopes are home to a unique array of wildlife, including the elusive huemel (a small deer) and the majestic condor. The scale and grandeur of this setting, where the glaciers seem to hang suspended between the jagged peaks, make this walk a truly rewarding excursion.

The hike is on a well-marked trail covering a variety of terrain, expect forest, river and mountain scenery and the paths that go with each. Our total ascent and descent will be approximately 950m / 3150ft, over a distance of 26 kilometres / 16.1 miles, and the round-trip will take us around nine hours.

We've graded this walk as challenging due to the long distance covered. There are other shorter walks available on self-guided trails if you prefer, or you might like to take the time instead to relax around the town of Chalten.

We have a three-hour drive back to Calafate this morning, in time for our afternoon flight to Buenos Aires. For those who wish, once we arrive in the capital, there might be the opportunity to take in one of the city's famous tango shows.

Please note, there are frequent airline schedule changes on domestic flights in Argentina. Our flight back to Buenos Aires may arrive in the late evening, giving you the morning free in Patagonia.

Our tour of Patagonia ends at our hotel in Buenos Aires.

There are no activities planned today, so you're free to depart at any time. If your flight is departing later in the day, luggage storage facilities are available at our hotel. If you'd like an airport transfer, you need to depart from either Aeroparque Internacional Jorge Newbery (AEP) or Ezeiza International Airport (EZE).

Is this the tour for you?

  • We've graded the pace of this trip as full - on and we'll cover a lot of ground to pack in all of Patagonia's highlights. Expect multiple long stretches of travel with drives of five hours or more.
  • This tour includes one ten - hour day journeying to and crossing the Chilean border. It's worth noting that the journey includes multiple methods of transport, and we can sometimes incur delays at border patrol.
  • The best way to soak up the stunning scenery on this tour is on foot, so please be aware that whether we're in the beautiful Argentinian capital or the depths of the Tierra del Fuego National Park, there'll be a fair bit of walking involved each day.
  • While you don't have to be a pro, it's recommended that you're physically fit in order to get the most out of the walks and hikes on this tour.
  • Adding to the other - worldly scenery of this part of the globe is the ever-changing weather. Here, blue skies can quickly turn to grey, so you should be prepared for all weather including heat, wind and rain.

Accommodation notes

During our tour of Patagonia, we'll stay in a selection of comfortable hotels. Each has been chosen for its location, comfort and authenticity. It's worth noting that facilities may differ from hotel to hotel and, at times, standards might differ from those at home. In Buenos Aires, we stay in a modern hotel located in the downtown area. It features a bar as well as a roof terrace on the sixth floor. Throughout Patagonia, we stay in a selection of well-located, warm and comfortable hosterias, lodges and cabins. It's worth noting that some of these accommodations are a little dated, however, we believe this adds to their old-fashioned charm. Breakfasts at hotels in Argentina are typically a light continental fare with coffee/tea, juice, toast and jams and some fruit. You may find yoghurt, cereal and ham or cheese, but hot buffet breakfasts are rare. One of the more memorable hotels on this tour is Cabanas del Paine, situated in the heart of the Torres del Paine National Park. Surrounded by mountains, it's an atmospheric stay. Dinners are included here and are made using local produce from the surrounding farmlands. On rare occasions when Cabanas del Paine is fully booked, we stay at Estancia El Ovejero, which is equally as stunning set on a ranch in the Patagonian pampas lands and is just an hour away from Torres del Paine.

The Best Things to Do in Rostov-on-Don

Statue of Alexander Pushkin in Rostov-on-Don

Contributor / Journalist

The city of Rostov-on-Don lies all along the banks of the Don river. It is a beautiful place to wander around; there are many green spaces, and during the summertime, you can bask in the sun or go on a relaxing boat ride down the river, a glass of wine in hand. Here are some of the top things to do in Rostov-on-Don.

Take a quick walk along pushkin street.

Pushkin Street is the main promenade in the downtown city area. The street, named after Alexander Pushkin, is full of cafés, bars , restaurants and historical statues, along with beautiful flowers and trees; it’s an ideal place to spend a relaxing weekend.
