Are you on a Munnar trip and want to see something other than tea gardens? Then Eravikulam National Park safari could be something to think about. Learn all about what sightings are possible, safari timings and how to reach Eravikulam.

I am on a never-ending chase to visit any National Park or Wildlife Sanctuary on every journey that I am on. It is fascinating for me to explore the local wildlife and bird species and document them. On one of such journeys when I was on a road trip in Kerala , I happened to experience the Eravikulam National Park safari near Munnar. Eravikulam National Park is famous for Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered deer species and I was super excited to photograph them and know more about them!

Where is Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park is situated in the Idukki district, about 8km away from Munnar and has earned the title of the first National Park that opened in Kerala. Located approximately 2,000 metres above mean sea level, it offers picturesque views of the Munnar valley and the tea gardens. The national park is around 97 square kilometres but only a fraction of that is open to visitors!

How to reach Eravikulam National park from Munnar

Private cars or taxis can be easily hired to reach here from Munnar. Motorbikes are available for rent and one can easily reach here on them. Public transport such as buses is available (board a bus going to Udumalaipettai from Munnar Bus stand).

History of Eravikulam National Park

Just like most National Parks in India, the protection of the species started only after losing a huge chunk of them! Rajamalai, as it was called in yesteryears, used to be a former hunting reserve for the Britishers before Independence. The park attracted hunters from all over the world to hunt Nilgiri Tahr for sport. Their peculiar shaped horns were why they were hunted.

It was managed by the Kannan Devan Hill Produce Company until 1971. With almost extinct numbers of Nilgiri Tahr due to hunting and shrinking of natural habitat, in 1972 the land was handed over to the Kerala Government. Since then it has been transformed into a conservation area and is also known as Rajamalai Eravikulam National Park.

The conservation efforts have paid off over the years and the park now houses over 860 Nilgiri Tahr (Census 2018) making it one of the largest populations in the world! The pandemic has brought even bigger cheer with a record 155 Nilgiri Tahr calves born in 2020 .

When to visit Eravikulam National Park

Planning a visit to Eravikulam National Park depends upon when the park is open for visitors. The park is closed twice from July to August for their mating season (all national parks in India are closed during this time) and then the second time while giving birth to the calves in the months of January to March.

So, the best time to visit the park is in the summer months – April to June or in the winter months from October – to January. I visited in December second week and the weather was perfect, and so was the sighting.

Start the safari as early as possible in the morning so as to skip the queues, avoid crowds and in pleasant weather.

Eravikulam National Park Safari: My experience

The biggest mistake I made was not to book the safari in advance. Honestly, visiting the park was not one of the things to do in Munnar but only when I reached Munnar and my hotel owner convinced me to go there. So I started on an early morning post breakfast. The car driver warned me of long queues but I was determined to pay my visit no matter what.

The car dropped me at the ticket window gate and I could see a long queue even before the ticket window had actually opened. I was not sure what to do as I would easily spend an hour just in the queue. I relented and walked to the end of the queue to place myself.

It was well over 90 minutes when I got my permit to go into the park. I was given two slips which I had to hand over to the shared bus driver and another one for the entry into the park. Yes, private vehicles are not allowed in the Eravikulam National Park Safari and neither are open gypsy like other Indian National Parks. Also Read: Manas National Park

I stood in another queue for the shared bus and finally after 15 minutes the bus arrived and took the visitors up the hills. The bus accommodated about 30 people. I could feel the air getting crisper with each turn on the hill loops. After about 10 minutes we were dropped at the entrance of the Eravikulam National Park. From there it was a safari walk. No vehicles are allowed beyond this point. Basically, visitors are allowed to walk in the designated areas to spot the animals and appreciate the rolling hills and visit Anamudi, the highest peak in India south of the Himalayas.

Visitors can spend as much time as they want at the top of the hill. You are allowed to hire a private guide with permission from the park if you book in advance.

Once you are done, you have to come back to the designated area for shared bus pick up wherein the buses will take you back to the ticket window station.

If the weather is pleasant, the walk can be quite enjoyable with epic views of the hills. I personally liked the hike which was on a nice and flat concrete road (yes there is no forest or nature trail here), it had panoramic views, a well-laid path and there’s the chance to spot wildlife too. So, if you are expecting to go on a long trek into nature, I would recommend booking one with the park in advance.

Walking safari on a concrete road

I walked and walked and walked. I overheard a lot of groups who were disappointed as to not spot anything and that they wasted the money. But I didn’t lose hope, yet!

I saw a group of people gathered near some bushes and their excited voices meant they saw something. Yep, I finally managed to see the Nilgiri Tahr. The deer seem terrified with so many people pushing and shoving each other to get a glimpse.

And it managed to escape away.

Most people from this group turned back, but I decided to go further. And I was rewarded with more sightings.

Almost 2 hours into the Eravikulam National Park Safari, I was hungry and wanted to pee. I had seen paid eco-toilets on my way up so I decided to hurry back down. These are located a little way up a hill just beyond the souvenir shop.

And just like that I was back at the bus pick up point, happy and satisfied to have seen the Nilgiri Tahr in the wild.

The first glimpse of Nilgiri Tahr I managed to capture

Pay a visit to the Eravikulam National park souvenir shop

Because all the proceeds go towards the park maintenance. I love national park merchandise and I do pick up something or the other. I paid a quick visit and picked a t-shirt. Merchandise here includes caps, safari hats, t-shirts, fridge magnets and even little Nilgiri Tahr deers as souvenirs!

The Lakkam Waterfalls originate in the heart of the Eravikulam National Park offering breathtaking views. It’s by far one of the pristine waterfalls in the entire town of Munnar and you don’t need a national park permit to visit.

Entrance to the falls cost INR 20 and it provides a cool respite. It is located a few kilometres from the park, so if you are visiting make sure you ask your driver to stop here for a while.

Tips for Eravikulam National Park Safari

  • Just like every national park in India, spotting a Nilgiri Tahr is not guaranteed. Over 850 deers are spread across 97 square kilometres of land which means the chances of spotting are less. They’re even less when you think that you’re only allowed to explore a few kilometres of that on a set walking path!
  • But patience is the key. Keep your eyes and ears open rather than clicking selfies all over the way.
  • Don’t limit yourself to a particular distance. Push those boundaries for spotting wildlife and rewarding yourself with amazing views.
  • Hire a guide for increasing your chances of spotting the Nilgiri Tahr.
  • But if you still run out of luck, the views from the top of the Eravikulam National park safari are still well worth the ticket price. I still think that a visit to the park is worth it for the breathtaking views you can get from up here!

Closure Period for Eravikulam National Park : February to March

Eravikulam National Park is located in the Southern Western Ghats near Idukki, Kerala. The name Eravikulam translates to streams and pools, which is the best description of the national park. The area of the park used to be managed as a Game Preserve till 1978 when the Government of Kerala elevated its status to that of a National Park.

The area of the park was home to the now highly endangered Nilgiri Tahr. It was placed under protection in this habitat in 1975. Eravikulam National park is spread over an area of 92 square kilometers and is covered with high altitude grasslands.

The main natural structure of the National Park is a central rolling plateau which is at an elevation of 2000 meters from the sea level. This park is full of undulating terrain and the highest peak in the region is Anamudi at 2695 meters.

The three major kinds of vegetation in the area include grasslands, shrublands and Shola forests. High plateaus and hills surrounding the park are primarily covered by the grasslands while the shrubland is more visible along the base of the cliffs. The Shola forests are located in the valleys between the hills and plateaus. Turner’s Valley is the deepest valley of this region and it roughly divides the park into two parts: the northwest and southwest regions.

History of Eravikulam National Park

The national park was managed as a Game Reserve till 1971 by the Kannan Devan Hill Produce Company. Management and protection of this area had been under the jurisdiction of the High Range Game Preservation Association, a non-Governmental organization of the area which was formed back in 1928.

The Eravikulam National Park attracted several hunters, naturalists, and scientists due to the unique feature of its land, climate, and remoteness. Early European explorers like Colonel Douglas Hamilton and J.D. Munro started settling in this area as they established the North Travancore Plantation and Agricultural Society in 1879.

They acquired an area of 227 sq. miles at a concessional price from Poonjat Raja, who was the chief of the local kingdom. Subsequently, the land was auctioned among the citizens of the society for agriculture and various plantation crops such as coffee and cinchona were cultivated.

The first tea in the High Ranges was planted back in 1890, and soon the area was being used for extensive cultivation of tea and eucalyptus by clearing out natural vegetation. Other than farming, the British hunters had an interest in hunting activities and had separate areas for amusement. The animals they hunted included Nilgiri Tahr, Sambar Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Gaur, Tiger, and Leopard.

When the Government of Kerala received the land that was not being used for cultivation, according to the Kannan Devan Hills Act of 1971, they planned to distribute it for agricultural purposes. The intervention of planters, naturalists, and scientists in 1975 resulted in the Government's declaration of the place as Eravikulam-Rajamalai Wildlife Sanctuary.

The area was later upgraded to the status of a National Park in 1978, which was managed by the Munnar Division. The Management of the company changed hands and is now handled by the High Range Wildlife Environmental Preservation Association, who have come together with the Forest Department in maintaining and managing the park with an intensive mission of protecting the Nilgiri Tahr.

The Significance of Eravikulam National Park

There are several factors that come together to prove the significance and value of the national park, culturally, ecologically and sociologically. Some of these reasons are:

1. This park presently houses the largest population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and is also the famous habitat of Neelakurunji which blooms only once every 12 years. Apart from these, the park is also home to Nilgiri Marten, Ruddy Mongoose, Small Clawed Otter, Dusky Striped Squirrel, and other animals.

2. The park is regionally important for fish and freshwater since it has the tributaries of River Pambar in the east and tributaries of the River Periyar and Chalakuddy in the west which helps to maintain the climate, provide drinking water and provide water for irrigation in parts of the Aanjanad Valley.

3. The highest peak of the Indian Peninsula lies in the national park. Anamudi (2695m) is also the highest peak of southern India. The sharp cliffs around the park provide a flat tableland that is responsible for the unique microclimate of the area. Even though the park falls in the latitudinal tropical region, it exhibits an extratropical climate due to its altitudinal influence.

4. The park is also famous for medicinal plants in the region such as the Drosera peltata and wild species of cultivated plants such Piper schmidtii and Elettaria cardamomum, which adds to the conversational significance of Eravikulam National Park.

5. This region is also a prime tourist spot as this park is the prime attraction of Munnar and is now one of the major tourist destinations in the whole of India. The aesthetic grandeur of the forest is an opportunity to see the endangered Nilgiri Tahr up close and the waterfall at Lakkam attracts more than 5,00,000 visitors annually.

6. The park along with Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Pampadum Shola National Park, Kurinjimala Sanctuary, Anamudi Shola National Park and Anamalai Tiger Reserve forms the largest conservation landscapes in the Western Ghats region.

7. This park also provides academic opportunities to study the biodiversity of montane vegetation and the inner workings of the ecosystem. The place also serves as a field laboratory for different activities such as conservation education, precipitation management, and research monitoring.

Exciting Fauna at Eravikulam National Park

The fauna of this beautiful national park consists of a lot of animals, amphibians, birds, and butterflies. It is full of beautiful creatures that can be only found in the hills of the Western Ghats. Some of the fauna reported here are described below:

● Animals : There is a large variety of animals in this national park that survive on the existing vegetation of the national park, which is in turn controlled by the quality of the soil, the type of climate of the area, and rainfall conditions.

There are about seventeen mammals, eleven birds and seven butterflies indigenous to the Western Ghats area. There are a total of 48 species of Mammals present at the park, including Nilgiri Tahr and Nilgiri Marten, out of which 17 are endemic to the Western Ghats. Other creatures at the park include amphibians, birds and butterflies.

● Birds : There are a total of one hundred and thirty-three species of birds in the National Park out of which almost eleven species are endemic to the Western Ghats.

Some of the famous birds found in the area are Jungle Bush Quail(Perdicula Asiatica), Indian Golden Backed Three-Toed Woodpecker(Dinopium Javanese), Small Green Barbet(Megalaima Viridis), White Breasted Kingfisher(Halcyon smyrnensis), and Indian Lorikeet(Loriculus Vernalis) among others.

● Butterflies : Eravikulam National Park is famous for its butterflies. There are a huge number of butterflies in the region that add to the aesthetic of the park. The area has a total of about a hundred species of butterflies in the region that have been identified by academicians. Out of these only 11 are endemic to the Western Ghats.

There are several butterflies available here that have become endangered and it is extremely important to take conservative measures for such species. A few of the endangered butterflies in the region are Southern Birdwing(Troides minos), the Malabar Raven(Papilio dravidarum), Red Disk Bush Brown(Mycalesis oculus) butterflies, the Palni Fourring(Ypthima ypthimoides), the Nilgiri Tiger(Parantica nilgiriensis) which is also indigenous to Western Ghats, the White Disk Hedge Blue(Celatoxia albidisca) butterflies and the extremely rare Tamil Darlet(Oriens concinna).

● Reptiles : Even though the national park lies in the tropical zone, due to the microclimate that has formed in the area, it has become hard for reptiles to survive here. This makes it increasingly important to help conserve the species of animals that are exclusive to the Eravikulam region.

The park itself has a total of only 13 species of reptiles out of which five species are lizards and the rest 8 are snakes. Ten out of the thirteen species of reptiles in the region are available in the Western Ghats.

Some of the lizards and snakes available in the area are the Anamalai Spiny Lizard(Salea anamallayana), Keeled Grass Skink(Mabuya carinata), Palni Shield Tail Snake(Uropeltis pulneyensis), Buff Striped Keelback(Amphiesma stolata), Gunther’s Vine Snake(Ahaetulla dispar) and the Perrotet's Mountain Snake(Xylophis perroteti).

● Amphibians : Due to the freshwater supply in the region from the rivers in Eravikulam and the extra tropical climate, several amphibians are also available within the national park. There are a total of twenty-one species of amphibians which have been reported at the park out of which a majority of 17 are endemic to the Fauna of Eravikulam National Park.

Some rare kinds of amphibians in the area include Ridged Toad(Bufo parietalis), Leith’s Leaping Frog(Indirana leithii), Bicolored Frog(Rana curtipus), Yellow-Bellied Bush Frog(Philautus flaviventris) and the Boulenger’s Bubble Nest Frog(Philautus signatus).

● Fish : The freshwater rivers and other water bodies present in the Eravikulam region have a lot of marine life out of which most of it is caught for produce. There are four species of fish that have been identified here. Out of this, the main three species of fish that can be commonly found in the region are, Lipped Algae Eater(Horalabiosa joshuai), Cardamon Garra(Garra hughi) and the common Rainbow Trout(Salmo gairdneri gairdneri).

All these animals, mammals, birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians and fish together make up the fauna of this ecosystem. A majority of these creatures are endangered, or endemic to the region making it extremely important to look after them and help them grow and survive. You will be able to see a majority of these animals on your visit to the park. However, the endangered ones are sighted rarely.

Breathtaking Flora of Eravikulam National Park

The flora of this massive region depends on the climate and the rainfall that it receives. These factors influence factors like the type and form of vegetation of the forest, the forest cover, the flowers and medicinal plants that grow in the forest. Let us take a deeper look into the flora of Eravikulam:

● Vegetation : There are mostly three different plant communities found in the region. These different forms of vegetation are:

  • Grasslands: Grasslands constitute over 60 percent of the land cover in Eravikulam, which means these places are mostly covered in wild grass with a few scattered trees here and there.
  • Shola Forest: The Shola forest region makes up for about 20 to 25 percent of the land area. Shola is the local name for the patches of tropical montane forests of the area.
  • Shrublands: These include the remaining areas which are mostly full of scrubs, rocky cliffs, and very small sections of Southern Tropical Hill Forests.

The vegetation of this area has nearly three hundred species of grass in the grasslands, around twenty-two species of Bryophytes which are basically mosses, around twelve species of pteridophytes which are vascular plants or trees and over a hundred species of fungi.

● Forest Cover : There are about two major physiognomic units of forests found within the Eravikulam National Park which are the Grasslands and the Shola Forests, classified as Southern Montane Wet Temperate Forests. These forests are present on the plateau and cover the hollows and valleys. A small portion of the park is also covered by other forests such as the Southern West Coast Evergreen Forests on the western side of the park and the Moist Deciduous Forests in the east.

On the western end where the forest merges with the Anamudi Reserve forest, a small segment of the national park shows signs of Tropical Evergreen Forests. Here the trees are tall and green with typical evergreen species such as the Mesua ferrea, Cullenia excelsa, Palaquium ellipticum.

On the other side, there is a small portion of deciduous forests towards the eastern periphery close to the Talliar estate. These forests have trees such as Rosewood and Pterocarpus while the undergrowth is mostly Lantana. It is due to the microclimate of the area that deciduous, evergreen forests can survive next to grasslands. This unique form of forestation should be protected as much as possible.

● Floristics : Eravikulam National Park is extremely rich in types of flowers due to its unique climate conditions. A huge number of seventy-six Pteridophytes and seven hundred and twenty-seven Angiosperms were recorded in the park, making it a mind-blowing number of 803 different types of flowers. Dicotyledons are the dominating type of flowers with over five hundred different species found within the park; monocotyledons represent about two hundred and twenty-two species of flowers.

There are ten other dominant families such as Poaceae, Orchidaceae, Asteraceae, Rubiaceae, Balsaminaceae, Acanthaceae, Papilionaceae, Lauraceae, Melastomataceae, and Lamiaceae. Fern groups of flowers are found here, with a total of seventy-six species of fern flowers, with most of them being endemic to Eravikulam. Out of nearly one hundred and ninety species of flowers that are exclusively found in this region, 89 have been placed under various threat categories. Some of the endemics of the region are Anaphalis barnesii, Begonia aliciae, Didymocarpus macrostachya and Habanarai flabelliformis.

● Medicinal Plants : The Eravikulam National Forest located in the Western Ghats has an area of over 200 hectares which is under the Medicinal Plant Conservation Area (MPCA) which stretches from the base of Anamudi into Eravikulam. This area is protected from fire incidents annually for its better conservation. Plants are medicinally used in practices such as Ayurveda, Homoeopathy and Unani medicine.

The plants that mostly come under protection are:

  • Wild Plants growing in forests, grasslands, aquatic ecosystems or ones that are associated with any other form of natural vegetation.
  • Plants that are growing as weeds in the forest.
  • Plants cultivated for cereal, fruit, vegetables, spices, oil or any other cash crop.
  • Plants cultivated as medicinal crops for medicinal purposes only.

The Eravikulam region is extremely rich in terms of medicinal plants as the forests and hills of this park house about 700 medicinal plants. Some of them are used for traditional or folk medicinal practices in the area, while others are exploited commercially for active enzymes or any other commercial value.

Things to Keep in Mind while at Eravikulam National Park

The sensitivity of the natural community of Eravikulam National Park needs to be preserved and maintained. This is ensured by insinuating some rules and regulations that visitors to Eravikulam National Park are requested to remember and abide by. Since the park is home to endangered species there is a need to promote the rules. These include:

1. Nature is unpredictable and so are the living beings residing in it. It is, thus, important to remember that sighting animals depend solely on coincidence. There is no certainty that you will spot animals but if you’re lucky, flip that camera out and click the moment before it escapes!

2. Outside food and beverages are strictly prohibited inside the park. This may lead to littering and doing so will culminate into a punishable offense. Eravikulam National Park requests its visitors to maintain the sanctity of the national park by averting from indulging in smoking and drinking alcohol within the premises of the park. Enjoy the hygienic and fresh atmosphere of the park without polluting it.

3. It is requested that visitors to Eravikulam National Park be mindful of the environment. Unlike humans, animals are generally quite sensitive to things we might not think twice about, such as loud music, loud talking and in general, noise. Feeding the animals and even carrying your own pets may be hazardous to the animals in Eravikulam National Park and you too.

4. Eravikulam National Park is one of the few plastic-free parks in the country. Plastic items will be discarded if carried with you. Please refrain from possessing any while at the park. Preservation and Maintenance of Eravikulam National Park

Nature is very sensitive and she needs to be taken care of with utmost care and effort. Programs, plans, and projects are constantly innovated to ensure the preservation of the few acres of greenery that haven’t yet been wiped off by our advancing world.

Eravikulam National Park houses the remnants of the last of the Shola-Grasslands and this aggravates the need for its protection. There are certain steps that are taken by Eravikulam National Park’s management to increase awareness while maintaining the existence of the park. These steps include:

1. Nature awareness programs : These programs have been instituted to spread the message of nature preservation amongst the masses that are mostly ignorant. These are extended to localities, visitors, park officials among others.

2. Census : The Park is home to species that are close to becoming rare like the Nilgiri Tahr. Hence an annual census is calculated to keep a track of their population. The Census of the largest Shola-Grassland ecosystem is done at the national park every year.

3. Weather and Vegetation Monitoring : There is constant monitoring of weather data at Eravikulam National Park because it is feared that the process of global warming will affect the forest ecosystem badly in the future. To do so, installation of an automated meteorological station in Rajamala, Eravikulam and Poovar has been proposed along with the establishment of certain plots to monitor long term vegetation changes in the forest and grasslands.

4. Health Monitoring : Health monitoring is carried out on the animals of the national park annually and quarterly. This is done by veterinary officers and researchers who track their health through direct sightings and by checking droppings. They also follow up on emergencies.

5. Academic Outreach : Eravikulam National Park conducts nature education camps for school students, college students and interested NGOs every year. There are no institutional courses or training programs for the park staff yet. Certain areas require an emphasis on research and monitoring, which has been strongly advocated through the national park’s future plans. Several research scholars and scientists also work at the park.

If you’re looking for adventure in a forest then Eravikulam National Park is the best place to go. It's also the perfect place to visit if you're a wildlife photographer as the place is full of rare birds, butterflies, frogs, snakes, leopards, and deer.

Take a jungle safari with your family and don’t forget to click quickly if you are lucky enough to see a Nilgiri Tahr which is an endangered species in the area. For nature lovers, the Shola Forests are a treat to the eyes, and for trekking enthusiasts, the grasslands are a beautiful trail that'll give you some great memories.

Eravikulam National Park is one of the highlights of any visit to Kerala.

Elevated on a mountainous plateau, you will get to see some of the best views that God’s Own Country has to offer and the chance to spot an endangered Nilgiri Tahr Deer.

Now, if you think that there is no chance of seeing one and it’s a waste of money. I’m living proof that you can actually get a glimpse of the deer while you’re here and I have the photos to prove it too!

But, if you’re still on the fence and not sure what to expect. This post will give you everything you need to know before your visit.

Here are some essential tips for Eravikulam National Park in Munnar!

Heads up: my trip was sponsored by India Someday . Although I was on a gifted press trip all images and opinions are completely my own.

Nilgiri Tahr Deer Eravikulam National Park

What is Eravikulam National Park?

Eravikulam National Park has the proud title of the first National Park that opened in Kerala.

It’s tucked away in the Idukki district near Munnar and is located around 2,000 metres above sea level.

The whole park is around 97 square kilometres but when you visit, you’ll only be able to experience a fraction of that!

Inside the park, you can see wildlife, beautiful floral and fauna, and rolling hills including Anamudi, the highest peak in India south of the Himalayas.

The History of Eravikulam National Park

Although the park and its inhabitants are protected today, this wasn’t always the case.

In fact, it used to be a Game Reserve for the British. It attracted people from all over the world to travel to Munnar and hunt wild animals down for sport.

It was managed by the Kannan Devan Hill Produce Company until 1971 when the lands were then handed to the Kerala Government.

In 1972 the Nilgiri Tahr was placed on the endangered list as nearly extinct due to extensive hunting practices. So, the park was then transformed into a conservation area to protect them.

Now, there are thought to be over 800 Nilgiri Tahr thriving in this park, making it one of the largest populations in the world!

Make sure you pop into the small museum in the park which explains more.

Where is Eravikulam National Park in Kerala and how to get there?

Eravikulam National Park can be found around 7 kilometres from Munnar in the Idukki district of Kerala.

It is easiest if you have your own means of transport to locate it, but you can easily rent a private car or taxi when you get here if you’re backpacking.

I would recommend hiring a driver for the day to take you to a couple of sites in the area (this should cost you around 2,000 rupees). This would be more cost-effective.

If you plan on taking public transport, you can hop on a bus heading Udumalaipettai from Munnar Bus stand and ask to be dropped off at the National Park.

If there aren’t any buses, try looking for shared Jeep options near the bus stand which may be heading to Eravikulam National Park.

I was guided around Eravikulam National Park with a naturalist guide from Route 49 adventures who escorted me here. It was amazing and my guide was so knowledgeable about the park. Check them out here !

Eravikulam National Park opening times and prices

The National Park is open from 7.30 – 4 pm daily. My advice would be to get there as soon as it opens.

Everyone that visits needs to buy a permit to enter the park;

  • Indian Nationals: 125 rupees
  • Children: 95 rupees
  • Foreign Nationals: 420 rupees
  • Ordinary Camera: 45 rupees
  • Video Camera: 335 rupees

Top tips for visiting Eravikulam National Park

Before I got to Eravikulam National Park, I had no idea what to expect. Would we be going on a safari in a jeep? Or, would it be like a zoo where the animals are trapped in cages.

I honestly had no idea, but now I have visited the park, I feel I can give you some advice to make sure you make the most of your visit and know what to expect!

Here are some essential tips for Eravikulam National Park;

Eravikulam National Park!

1. Eravikulam National Park is home to the endangered Nilgiri Thar Deer

As I’ve already mentioned, Eravikulam National Park has one of the largest Nilgiri Tahr populations in the world. There are thought to be 700-800 deer who have a home here.

Although there are so many, they are still sadly very much on the endangered species list. But, calving season takes place each year and the numbers continue to grow!

There are two groups of Nilgiri Tahr, the mixed group and the all-male species group. The male is called a saddleback and has big curved horns. Where the females have short horns and are a lot smaller.

Although there are so many, it can be a bit of pot luck whether you spot one! They often graze in the park but can be put off by the noise and smell of humans.

As well as these majestic creatures there are over 48 species of animals, 133 species of birds, 101 species of butterflies, and 21 species of amphibians! Not to mention all the flora and fauna too.

Nilgiri Tahr Deer at Erivakulum National Park

2. Eravikulam National Park is closed for calving season 3 months a year

So, when is the best season to visit Eravikulam National Park?

Well, the Kerala government always does what is right for the animals each season. Not only for their protection but also to ensure that the number of deer increases.

Each year the deers mate around July and August and then give birth to their young around January, February, and March.

During this time, the park is closed for the calving season!

So, I would make sure you don’t plan your visit around this time. Also, the park may be closed during monsoon season (June – August) if it is deemed dangerous.

The best time to visit the park is in summer, around April, May, and June. This is the best time to see wildlife as they will come out to find food and water.

My guide told me that the best time to visit during the day would be early morning. This is when it is quietest, so you skip the long queues and the animals won’t be hiding from loud voices.

Eravikulam National Park is open from 7:30 am – 4.00 pm.

3. You can’t drive up to the park, you must get a shared bus to the top of the plateau

Everyone that visits Eravikulam National Park has to park up in the car park at the bottom and get a shared bus ride to the top.

This is great for the environment as it means fewer cars polluting the park and controls the crowds too. But, this does mean long queues to wait for the buses.

The buses take around 30 people at a time and when it is busy, they run non-stop, so you shouldn’t have much of a problem. But, I personally would arrive early to skip the long lines.

The bus ride comes included as part of your park permit which I’ll go through below with a little secret on how to skip the queues too!

Eravikulam National Park buses

4. Buy tickets in advance to skip the queue

To enter the park, you will need to buy a permit which you can do at the visitor centre counter as soon as you arrive.

For Indian Nationals the permits are 125 rupees but Foreign Nationals pay 420 rupees per head. If you want to take pictures with a camera it’s an extra 45 rupees. The only benefit of paying more as a foreigner is you get to skip the queues.

Queues for the buses can reach up to 2 hours in peak season. A lot of tourists complain about their whole time being spent in a queue. So, to avoid it, I’d leave early.

If you want to save more time, I would highly recommend asking your guesthouse to buy your ticket in advance. That way you can skip some of the lines before you’ve even got there.

Unfortunately, you can’t do this online (don’t trust websites that offer!), It will just come with a small 50 rupees reservation fee.

I did hear a rumour that you can pay for a VIP service that lets you skip the lines too, but nothing official on the website about it. It could just be guards asking for tips lol.

Munnar National Park

5. Once you reach the top you must take a ‘walking safari’ around the National Park

Unlike other National Parks, Eravilkulam allows you to wander freely through a designated area.

They don’t run jeep safaris or anything like that to spot a deer, but you can go on a 2-3 hour private guided hike with permission from the park if you book in advance.

There is no limit as to how long you spend here, so if you fancied trying to spot deer all day, nobody will stop you.

It’s a nice easy stroll with epic views and I guess staying in one place, you have more of a chance to spot the deer. Better than frightening it off with the roar of a jeep engine!

Eravilkulam walking safari

6. It will be busy as the distance through the park is only a few kilometres

A lot of people who are looking to hike within nature are sorely disappointed when they arrive at Eravilkulam as they expected it to be a nature park with long walking trails.

In reality, you’ll be walking on solid concrete for just over a few kilometres in a set area of the park.

Because the path is so short and there are lots of crowds, it’s incredibly packed. There’ll be large groups and selfie sticks flying around everywhere!

Personally, I didn’t mind the ‘hike’ as it was nice and flat, it had panoramic views, I didn’t get lost (I’m the worst at navigating) and there’s the chance to spot wildlife too. But, I get it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

So, if you are expecting to go on a long trek into nature, I would recommend booking one with the park in advance. Or, better yet, save your money and find a guided trekking tour to go on in Munnar instead.

I would recommend visiting one of the tea plantation hikes in the area, read my guide all about the best tea plantations in Munnar here.

The Limit at Eravikulam National Park

7. Seeing a Nilgiri Tahr Deer is not guaranteed… but patience is key!

800 deer spread across 97 square kilometres of land means that your chances of spotting one aren’t high. They’re even less when you think that you’re only allowed to explore a few kilometres of that on a set walking path!

So, I wouldn’t set your expectations too high. But, it’s not impossible either, or, people wouldn’t pay!

When I visited the park, we got word that a few deer had been spotted near the endpoint of the path at the very top of the park. So, we pretty much ran up there to try and find them.

Unfortunately, they had moved on. Safe to say I was disappointed. I kept looking out, thinking I may have seen one in the bushes.

Although we were running on a strict time with our tour, I asked my guide if we could wait it out a few minutes to spot one.

A few minutes later, a family thought they had spotted a goat. But, in fact, it was a female Nilgiri Tahr coming out to graze on the main path. Then two more followed!

Everyone was gathering at the main point to take photos and to catch a glimpse! It was a great feeling.

The moral of this story? Wait it out a while! You never know.

Nilgiri Tahr Deer in Kerala

8. The views from the top of the park are still well worth the ticket price

Even if you don’t see a Nilgiri Tahr, I still think that a visit to the park is worth it for the breathtaking views you can get from up here!

Eravikulam is home to some of the highest peaks outside of the Himalayas and, along with that, you can spot endless tea fields, waterfalls and really experience God’s own country.

There are multiple points along the path that provide great views and selfie points. So, make sure you take some time to remain present and enjoy the beauty all around you.

Eravikulam National Park Tips

9. There are eco toilets in the park that you can pay to use

What I loved about this park was how eco-conscious they were. Not only was it a completely plastic-free zone, they also had eco-friendly toilets that you could pay to use.

It sounds weird but I actually prefer toilets you have to pay for in India, usually, this means that they will be clean.

I didn’t use the loos here, but I did hear that they are kept nice and tidy throughout the day. So, don’t worry if you need to use the facilities.

These are located a little way up a hill just beyond the gift shop.

10. Make sure you look around the souvenir shop, all proceeds go towards the park

I’m such a nerd when it comes to safari parks and I was so happy when I saw they had a gift shop here.

Inside, they sold all sorts of t-shirts, caps, safari hats, magnets, and even little Nilgiri Tahr deers as souvenirs!

I was super tempted to buy a hat, but as it wasn’t too hot and sunny I didn’t bother. But, my guide and I did have a lot of fun trying them on.

Make sure you stop in here as all proceeds go towards the park.

11. They sell some amazing local ice cream in the café!

The day I arrived in Munnar, I lost my voice to a sore throat. So, I was craving something cold. I know, I know, you’re not meant to have cold drinks or ice cream for sore throats. But, I just needed something to take the itch away.

Thankfully, they have a cute little café at the park that sells local ice creams made from local produce in the area. They had butterscotch and chocolate!

If you are feeling peckish, there are also some snacks you can buy like samosas. Also, they sell your classic chai and coffee too if you needed a little pick me up.

The queue is a little bit of a free for all though and I lost my temper when a lady shoved me with her elbow trying to push in front of me. But, the fight for ice cream was worth it lol!

12. Every 12 years a rare Neelakurinji flower phenomenon happens here

The Neelakurinji flower bloom is a rare phenomenon that occurs in Kerala. But, it only happens once every 12 years!

Most plants die and regrow with the seasons annually but the Neelakurinji has a different cycle.

“Neela” in the local language means blue and “Kurinji” is the local name for the tiny blue flowers. When they come together, they almost look like a sea of purple lavender!

The last one took place in 2018, so it’s not expected to happen again until 2030.

Around this time, Kerala will see thousands of tourists, botanists, scientists, and naturalists flood the area. So, book way in advance.

Click here to read more about the Neelakurinji season

13. It’s a plastic, clutter and cruelty free zone

Eravikulam is a strictly plastic-free zone, but you are permitted to bring water bottles. Don’t bring any plastic bags with you to the park or anything you can dispose of either.

On that note, don’t bring a picnic along with you to eat. This is strictly not allowed in the park.

If you do happen to see a wild deer, I shouldn’t have to say this, but don’t touch it, or scare it away.

Deers often use scent to recognise their young and if they feel the baby has been contaminated it may abandon it. Plus, it’s just cruel!

There are a hundred signs in the park about what you should or should not do here. So, you shouldn’t be in any doubt.

14. Look out for leeches!

I travelled just after the monsoon season and Kerala was the first time I had ever been leeched!

While I was taking pictures of the deer on the grassy knoll, I suddenly felt a tingly feeling between my toes and saw a little baby leech wiggling!

I freaked out and grabbed it, then threw it away so god knows where it is now. But, luckily as it was so small it didn’t make me bleed.

Long story short, watch out for leeches in the monsoon season, and don’t wear sandals!

15. Don’t forget to visit Lakkam Falls nearby

Did you know that there are some gorgeous waterfalls that form part of the wider Eravikulam National Park? One of these is called Lakkam falls.

It’s by far one of the prettiest falls in the whole of Munnar and you don’t need a national park permit to visit.

Entrance to the falls costs 20 rupees and it provides a cool respite in the humid monsoon months. My favourite part about my visit was swimming in the icy falls and getting a natural fish spa!

It’s located a few kilometres from the park, so if you are visiting make sure you ask your driver to stop here for a while.

The best time to visit these falls is monsoon time (July-Sep), if you come in summer (April-June) this will be dried up!

Where to stay in Munnar

Although staying in the centre of Munnar provides cheap accommodation, the best way to experience this hill station is to stay in the countryside!

India Someday booked me into the adorable Mistletoe Munnar Homestay which not only had a beautiful double room but an epic view from my balcony too.

One of my fondest memories was eating breakfast out on my private terrace overlooking the rolling hills. It was magic!

As it is a family-run homestay they also cook homemade traditional meals in their kitchen too. Each night I asked for a surprise and it got better and better.

Exploring a destination...

The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Planting your feet somewhere you’ve never been before brings with it the rush of discovery and the joy of pushing back on the boundaries of your world.

But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.

• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too

• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!

• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!

Wildlife in Eravikulam National Park

Photo of Eravikulam National Park 2/13 by

Eravikulam National Park is a wildlife lover’s paradise, with its diverse and rich fauna that includes endangered and endemic species. The main attraction of the park is the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered species of wild goat that is endemic to the Western Ghats. The park has the largest surviving population of Nilgiri Tahr , estimated at 750 individuals. The Nilgiri Tahr is also known as the Varayadu or the mountain goat in Malayalam, the local language of Kerala.

The Nilgiri Tahr has a stocky body with short legs and curved horns. It has a brownish-grey coat with a dark stripe along its back. The males have a silver-grey saddle patch on their backs and a dark mane on their necks. The females are smaller and lighter in color than the males. The Nilgiri Tahr lives in groups called herds, which consist of females and young ones led by an adult male. The males are territorial and fight with each other for dominance and mating rights.

The Nilgiri Tahr is mainly found in the grasslands and shola forests of the park, where it feeds on grasses, herbs and shrubs. It is most active in the morning and evening hours, when it grazes and rests on the slopes. It is shy and elusive by nature, but can be easily spotted in the Rajamala area of the park, where most of the tahrs are concentrated. The best time to see them is from December to April, when they descend to lower altitudes for breeding.

Apart from the Nilgiri Tahr, Eravikulam National Park also hosts many other animals and birds that can be seen in their natural habitat. Some of them are:

Lion-tailed macaque: A rare and endangered primate that has a black coat with a silver mane and a long tail with a tuft at the end. It lives in small groups in the shola forests and feeds on fruits, seeds and insects.

Leopard: A large and powerful cat that has a yellowish-brown coat with black spots and rosettes. It is an agile climber and a stealthy hunter that preys on deer, wild boar, monkeys and other animals.

The Neelakurinji flowers belong to the genus Strobilanthes, which has about 250 species , most of them found in the Western Ghats.

The Neelakurinji flowers have a bell-shaped corolla with four lobes and a long tube. They grow in clusters on shrubs that reach up to 2 meters in height. They have a sweet fragrance and attract bees, butterflies and birds. The Neelakurinji flowers have a blooming cycle of 12 years, which means they flower only once in their lifetime and then die. The last blooming season was in 2018, which attracted thousands of tourists to the park. The next blooming season is expected in 2030, so mark your calendars.

The Neelakurinji flowers have a special significance and cultural value for the local people of Kerala. They are considered as a symbol of love, romance and prosperity. They are also used as an indicator of time, as they mark the passage of 12 years. The local name Neelakurinji comes from the words neela, which means blue, and kurinji, which is the name of a mythical flower mentioned in ancient Tamil literature.

Apart from the Neelakurinji flowers, Eravikulam National Park also boasts of many other plants and flowers that grow in different habitats and elevations. Some of them are:

Eravikulam National Park

Around 11km north of Munnar, Eravikulam's 97 sq km of grasslands and shola conceal the world's largest population of endangered, but almost tame, Nilgiri tahr; 700 to 800 of these mountain goats roam its wilds. Safari buses take you into the Rajamala tourist zone where the likelihood of sightings is high. The park also hosts Anamudi, South India's highest peak (2695m), though it was closed to climbers at the time of research, as were all Eravikulam treks (these may reopen).

From Munnar, taxis cost ₹800 return with a couple of en-route stops; government buses take you the final 4km from the checkpoint.

The Eravikulam National Park is a beautiful nature reserve in Kerala , just an hour away from Munnar. Eravikulam means ‘streams and pools of water’ and is rightly monikered, so streams of water wind their way into the beautiful place. We will go through the ins and outs of this amazing biosphere that you must visit when you’re in Kerala. Let’s dive deep into it!

History and Significance of Eravikulam National Park: One of the Best Kerala Wildlife Sanctuaries

The Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary was a Game Preserve before it was listed as a national park. The British used to use this area for hunting and entertainment purposes. Till 1971, the region acted as a Game Preserve under the Kannan Devan Hill Produce firm and the High Range Game Preservation Association and was taken over by the Government of Kerala. After the takeover, the region was listed as a national park in 1978.

Its land has a history of being auctioned over many years in parts to the local public for agricultural purposes. The area that remained after being auctioned off was named the national park for the preservation of the Nilgiri Tahr, a highly endangered goat in the country. The area also has the Anamudi Peak, South India and Indian Peninsula’s highest peak.

The extensive flora and fauna of the place attracted many scientists and naturalists, which led to the region being renamed the Eravikulam-Rajamalai Wildlife Sanctuary. Environmental protection initiatives were taken to protect the wildlife and flora of the place from then on. Currently, the ecosphere is managed by the High Range Wildlife Environmental Preservation Association and the Forest Department of Kerala for the preservation of the exotic goat, Nilgiri Tahr and the neelakurinji flowers.

The park is spread over 97 square kilometres and boasts a lively collection of flora and fauna. Other surrounding Kerala wildlife sanctuaries of Chinnar, Kuinjimala, Anamudi Shola and more make up the best Western Ghats biodiversity for you to witness.

The Enchanting Flora and Fauna of Eravikulam National Park

2 10

It is divided into 3 regions, only one of which is accessible to tourists. The core area and the buffer area are for the breeding and preservation of the goats, while the tourist area is reserved for the tourists. Tourists can witness the beautiful wildlife while supporting the preservation of the beautiful animals.

The most famous plant here is the neelakurinji flower, which blooms once every 12 years. With its last bloom in 2018, it will bloom once again around 2030. These beautiful blue flowers can be marvelled at from the tourist area of the park along with other animals.

The secondary flora of the Eravikulam National Park includes grasslands, Shola forests, and shrublands. The park is also a high-altitude grassland reserve. The grasslands mostly cover the high plateaus and hills that encircle the park, with the shrubland becoming more noticeable around the bases of the cliffs. The valleys between hills and plateaus are home to the Shola woods. The northwest and southwest sections of the park are separated by Turner’s Valley, the deepest valley in the area.

There are several medicinal plants in the area as well. Drosera peltate and Elettaria cardamomum are two of the 700 medicinal plants found in this region, giving it another title of Medicinal Plant Conservation Area.

The area is also home to the tributaries of Rivers Periyar, Chalakuddy and Pambar, which gives the park its name ‘Eravikulam’. These tributaries not only provide irrigation water and drinking water for the animals but are also helpful in the preservation of the nearby Aanjanad Valley.

The most famous animal in the sanctuary is the Nilgiri Tahr. The park is primarily a Nilgiri Tahr habitat. Apart from that, you will also find dusky-striped squirrels, small-clawed otters, ruddy mongoose, and other intriguing animals within the vast expanse of the Reserve.

There are many reptiles, fishes, and butterflies to be found here, along with the wild animals. Some of the most prominent birds here are the jungle bush quails, white-breasted kingfishers, Indian lorikeets and more. The park also houses many amphibians, such as the yellow-bellied bush frogs and ridged toads.

According to the most recent information available from the tourist management system of Eravikulam National Park, the best method to spot these rare animals is to go about a kilometre down a narrow black road to the intersection where they peacefully reside. They have become friendly and acclimated to the polite presence of humans over time.

2. Trek to Anamudi Peak
