McKinney tops DP World Tour Q School
by Australian Golf Media
By Tony Webeck
Reigning Australian Amateur champion Connor McKinney is eyeing off a quick transition to the professional ranks after topping First Stage of DP World Tour Qualifying School in Portugal.
McKinney and fellow West Australian Braden Becker both advanced to Second Stage but it was McKinney who turned heads, winning by five in a wire-to-wire triumph.
Champion at the St Andrews Links Trophy in June, the Joondalup amateur fired a nine-under 63 on day one at Montado Hotel and Golf Resort and was never headed, adding rounds of 67-64-69 to finish five clear and book his place at Second Stage in Spain from November 3.
Becker will also join McKinney and the seven Aussie qualifiers from Rosebud at Second Stage after finishing tied for ninth in Portugal.
Setting up his week with back-to-back rounds of five-under 67, Becker bounced back from an even-par 72 in Round 3 with a bogey-free four-under 68 on the final day to finish two-strokes inside the qualifying cut-off.
First Stage of DP World Tour Qualifying School continues this week with Simon Hawkes and amateur Hayden Hopewell in action in Sweden while Elvis Smylie and Victorian Lazim Medini will contest Q School in England and France respectively in the first week of October.

Dp world tour q-school – 2023 first stage preview & results.
28th August 2023 (Updated 6th October 2023)
I am following all of the amateur players as well as the Great British & Irish professionals through the 2023 DP World Tour Qualifying School series.
Q-School consists of three stages, First, Second and Final.
This article covers FIRST STAGE QUALIFYING which started on 29th August and ends on 6th October 2023.
Additional articles will be written to cover the SECOND STAGE and FINAL STAGE in due course.
Four Second Stage events will be played in Spain on 2nd – 5th November.
Final Stage will be played at Infinitum Golf in Spain on 10th – 15th November where 156 players will battle over six rounds for a top 25 and ties finish and a place on the DP World Tour for the 2024 season.
More information on the 2023 Qualifying School can be found in the Appendix at the end of this article.
FIRST STAGE
First Stage consisted of nine 72 hole stroke play qualifying events split into six Sections, A, B, C, D, E and F.
The number of players advancing from each First Stage tournament is based on field size and calculated on a pro rata basis (i.e. approximately the same percentage from each tournament progressed). All players tied for the the last qualifying position at the conclusion of play advanced to the Second Stage.
This year the DP World Tour introduced a 36 hole cut to First Stage removing players not within 12-shots of the final qualifying place. The 54 hole cut, where only players within 7-shots of the final qualifying place play the final round, also remained in place.
There were 70 amateur entries with 17 (24%) of these successful.
Here is a list of the events, in reverse chronological order, showing how all of the players that I am interested faired plus the medalists: –

THE 2023 DP WORLD TOUR QUALIFYING SCHOOL SERIES
The DP World Tour (previously known as the European Tour) Qualifying School was first played in 1976, four years after the European Tour was founded. What started out as a 72 hole test has grown into potentially a 252 hole marathon.
Nowadays there are three stages of stroke play qualifying; First, Second and Final.
The 2023 European Tour Q-School entrance fee was £2,500 (2022: £2,000, 2019: £1,800) with entries closed on 16th August 2023..
Male amateur golfers with a handicap below 0.4 (i.e. scratch) and who have appeared in positions 1-2,000 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) in 2023 can enter.
Some entrants are exempted straight into Second Stage or Final Stage based on their past results and ranking.
From an amateur perspective the leading 5 entrants to First Stage as at 17th August 2022 to a limit of 20th place in the WAGR are fast-tracked straight into Second Stage.
First Stage consists of nine 72 hole stroke play qualifying events split into six Sections, A, B, C, D, E and F.
Around 20% of each field, normally 15-30 players, progress from each event. The actual number of places are confirmed after all the players have teed off on Day 1 of each qualifier.
A 54-hole cut, where players need to be within 7 shots of the final allocated qualifying place, reduces the field for the final round. Ties for the final qualifying place at the end of play proceed too.
SECOND STAGE
The Second Qualifying Stage consists of four separate 72-hole events.
2nd – 5th November 2023
DESERT SPRINGS RESORT, ALMERIA, SPAIN
ISLA CANELA (LINKS COURSE), HUELVA, SPAIN
GOLF LAS PINAILLAS, ALBACETE, SPAIN
FORTANALS GOLF CLUB, GIRONA, SPAIN
The leading five entrants as at 16th August 2023 to a limit of 20th place in the WAGR are exempt from First Stage and can start their Q-School journeys at Second Stage.
There is no cut but players are able to withdrawal after each round if they wish to.
The actual number of places available for Final Stage are again confirmed after all of the players have teed off on Day 1 of each event. Sudden death play-offs are held to resolve ties at this Stage.
FINAL STAGE
The Final Qualifying Stage consists of 108 holes on the Lakes and Hills Courses at Infinity Golf, previously known as Lumine GC, in Tarragona, Spain.
11th – 16th November 2023
INFINITUM, TARRAGONA, SPAIN
Infinitum replaced PGA Catalunya Resort in 2017 and will be hosting Final Stage for the fifth time this year. No Q-School was held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The current 3 year contract with the Spanish venue to stage the Finals expires in 2024.
156 players will play two rounds over each of the Lakes and Hills Courses. After these 72 holes the field will be cut to the leading 70 players and ties who will play a final 36 holes.
The leading 25 players (plus those tied for 25th place) in the Final Stage competition will earn Conditional Membership of The DP World Tour (and fully exempt status on the Challenge Tour) for the 2024 season. On average the medalist receives 27 tournament starts whilst the 25th qualifier has receives 18.
Those who make the 72 hole cut but finish outside the Top 25 will also earn a membership category, albeit a lower one, on the DP World Tour (and Challenge Tour).
Players who miss the cut will be eligible for membership of the Challenge Tour.
Every player is ranked according to their finishing score, card count backs assisting in this process, and this ranking matters when it comes to future playing opportunities.

DP World Tour unveils venues for 2024 Qualifying School
12.11pm 10th May 2024 - Sponsorship & Events
The 2024 DP World Tour Qualifying School schedule has been announced and includes five new venues, an increase in First Stage opportunities and a return to INFINITUM for its dramatic conclusion, as professionals and amateurs from across the world look to secure their place on Europe’s top tier tour.
Hopefuls will compete through three stages, as they look to add their name to a growing list of Major Champions, World Number Ones and Ryder Cup stars that have been produced at Qualifying School since its inception in 1976.
The Qualifying School will visit 15 venues from August to November and will once again conclude with Final Stage at Costa Dorada’s award-winning INFINITUM resort.
All five venues making their Qualifying School debuts will act as First Stage hosts, as the number of First Stage opportunities increases from nine to ten, giving additional players the chance to earn one of the DP World Tour cards on offer.
Golf Nazionale in Italy will make its Qualifying School bow fresh from hosting the Junior Ryder Cup last year, while Moonah Links is also a new venue and sees Qualifying School return to Australia for a third successive year. There are debuts on the schedule too for Golf de Léry Poses in France, Huddersfield Golf Club in England and Horsens Golfklub in Denmark.
Second Stage will take place across Spain, with the same four venues returning to the schedule; Desert Springs Resort in Almeria, Isla Canela Links in Huelva, Golf Las Pinaillas in Albacete and Fontanals Golf Club in Girona.
Mike Stewart, DP World Tour Qualifying School Director, said: “We’re excited to be able to share the full schedule for the 2024 DP World Tour Qualifying School, and we’re delighted to welcome our five new host venues.
“Increasing First Stage opportunities from nine to ten is an important change for 2024, as we hope to give more players the opportunity to clinch one of the coveted DP World Tour cards that are up for grabs.
“All 15 venues will provide a true test to those teeing it up and those that do come through the three-stage process will be ready to compete on the DP World Tour in 2025.
“INFINITUM has provided the perfect setting for Final Stage over the past five years, and we’re looking forward to returning there for a sixth time. It is a truly first-class venue and we’re grateful for their continued help and hospitality. It is a true highlight of our schedule.”
Joaquín Mora Bertrán, Deputy General Manager of Golf, Beach Club and F&B ad INFINITUM, said: “We are delighted to welcome one of golf’s most exciting events back to INFINITUM. This is a very exciting time for INFINITUM, with major investment across the entire resort making the experience for visiting players, DP World Tour hopefuls and our members and residents even better. Earlier this year, we announced major improvements to the Lakes, and we are excited to see how the players react when they take on the renovated course – along with the equally enjoyable Hills – in November.
The Final Stage of Qualifying School will take place at INFINITUM from November 8-13, 2024, where 156 players will compete over six rounds.
Entries for the DP World Tour Qualifying School will open in June, with an official date yet to be confirmed.

Why Q School Should Be Televised
This week will see the return of the Final Stage of the DP World Tour Q School and it's about time that we all got to watch it live
- Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter
We’ve heard plenty over the past year about the screaming need to mix things up in the golf world. For decades we’ve generally been fed a load of 72-hole strokeplay tournaments where, by the following week, most of us have forgotten who’s finished outside the top three.
This week we will see the return of the DP World Tour Final Stage of Q School where 156 hopefuls will battle it out for 25 (and ties) golden tickets. For some it’s probably overstated a little quite how important it is, with invites and previous heroics meaning that some players won’t struggle for starts next year, but the difference in finishing inside that top 25 is seismic for most.
One seasoned observer of the tour noted that he had ‘never seen as many grown men cry’ in the space of a week that must seem never-ending at times. It’s six rounds, which is borderline ridiculous when you consider there will be a couple of practice rounds given that it’s played over two courses at Infinitum near Tarragona Spain. So, when you’ve been grinding away for 54 holes, you’re only halfway there or one round away from the end of your year.
The ‘lucky’ ones will then get to battle it out all the way to the sixth round where, three years ago, 12 under was the magic mark for a top-25 finish. Then Rikard Karlberg, who had spent 18 months battling illness and depression, holed a putt across the 108th green to claim that final spot.
On the same mark Dale Whitnell, who had stopped playing the game as it was too expensive, bogeyed 17 and then birdied 18 to squeeze home. Also on -12 Jean-Baptiste Gonnet had to be persuaded by a friend to enter First Stage where he trebled the last before making it by one before coming through a play-off at the Second Stage.
One shot better was Bradley Dredge, who was outside the places coming to the 18th, before nutting a 3-wood to 10 feet to set up a brilliant eagle. Then there was Dave Coupland who birdied the last two and Sihwan Kim who closed with 63 to move up 38 spots.
Here we are talking about players finishing in 25th place. Everyone has a story and at Q School we get to hear them. The DP World Tour might want to talk about record purses but the players are the ones who make it what it is.

Three years ago we had the Hojgaard twins show up at Q School with Rasmus making it through and Nicolai missing out. Also through was Marcus Armitage who has since won on tour and become one of the main faces when the tour wants to show itself in a fun and entertaining light.
This week we have the likes of David Howell , Chris Wood and Stevie Gallacher, all of whom have played Ryder Cups, playing for their futures. A huge bundle of tour stalwarts will be in Spain this week as well as some fairly eye-catching names such as Kiradech Aphibranrat, Simon Dyson and Jarmo Sandelin.
In the next couple of years we’ll see future winners on tour who have emerged from this week. Historically the likes of Justin Rose , Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal, Padraig Harrington and Sandy Lyle have all been through its doors. Others, like Ian Woosnam, Ian Poulter and Miguel Angel Jimenez, have all been regular visitors.
It’s like nothing else on the calendar. There are a collection of haunted looks about the place as the inevitable plays out but there’s a finality to the whole thing which makes for great TV. Some players’ games are on the up coming to the Lakes and Hills courses at Infinitum but the majority are here because things haven’t played out as planned and this is the ultimate last-chance saloon.
Last week we saw the Grand Final of the Challenge Tour being televised for the first time, most likely because of its title sponsor Rolex being involved. Which is a very welcome move but, in terms of drama, there’s nothing like as much going on as there will be this week.
The real kicker is that the final three rounds, when in my utopian world the cameras will start rolling, take place on Monday to Wednesday when there is no live golf taking place.
Three years ago the top player (yes, there is prize money) received €17,000 while those in 25th and ties received €1,860. But, refreshingly, there’s no talk of money all week.
For the past three years we haven’t had a Q School as the pathways to the DP World Tour have been shut down somewhat. It’s a key part of the calendar and it remains the best-kept secret in terms of viewing, it’s high time that we all got to enjoy all its charms.

Teenager leads DP World Tour Q School at Rosebud
Victorian teenager Harvey Young is the surprise first round leader after day one of First Stage of DP World Tour Qualifying School at Rosebud Country Club.
Matias Sanchez had the honour of hitting the first shot for this year’s Qualifying School ( below ) that will culminate with the six-round Final Stage marathon in Spain from November 10.
It won’t be known until after the first round has been completed at The Players Club in England overnight how many spots will be available to Second Stage for the field in Rosebud, Young in prime position after a round of 3-under 68.
Just 19 years of age, Young turned professional in February after qualifying for the matchplay section of the US Junior Amateur at Bandon Dunes last year.
He took out Temporary Tournament Membership of the PGA Tour of Australasia to play the PNG Open in May where he finished tied for 35th. In the three weeks prior he made the cut in two of three events on the MENA Golf Tour, his best finish a tie for 33rd at the Malaysian Swing II at the Els Club.
A bogey at the first hole was not how Young hoped to start and found himself 2-over through eight holes when he dropped a shot at the par-4 eighth.
He got back to even par with an eagle at the par-5 ninth and then picked up birdies at 10, 14 and 16 to finish the day one stroke clear of fellow rookie Josh Greer (69), Michael Pearce (69), Andre Lautee (69) and Japan’s Miki Yamaji.
Sanchez had two birdies and a lone bogey in his round of 1-under 70, tied for sixth after Round 1 with Adam Brady (70), Hayden Hopewell (70) and Ryan Kowal (70).
Defending champion James Marchesani was a late withdrawal on the eve of the first round after being notified that was now exempt into Second Stage.
