Follow these steps to navigate safely even when you don’t have an internet connection.

You can’t always count on a strong internet connection when you most need Google Maps.

Thankfully, Maps has an offline feature to help you navigate safely even when your phone might be showing zero bars. Offline maps can be an especially useful tool for people who frequently travel abroad or visit remote areas with spotty cell service. All that’s required on your part is a little bit of planning.

The next time you might be faced with the potential of a poor signal, try downloading a map of your future whereabouts in advance. The process is simple and works on both Android and iOS.

No connection? Maps can keep you moving.

How to use Google Maps offline

  • Open the Google Maps app.
  • Tap on your profile picture in the top right corner.
  • Tap “Offline Maps.”
  • Tap “Select Your Own Map.”
  • Move the rectangle over the area you plan to visit.
  • Click “Download.”

And if you’re staying in a specific location — such as a city or a town — there’s an even simpler way:

  • Search for your destination in Google Maps. (For example: “Philadelphia.”)
  • Tap the three dots in the top right corner of the information panel.
  • Tap “Download offline map.”

Maps will still give you the option to make adjustments to the range of the area. And that’s it.

In both cases, Maps will show you an estimate of how much space the file will take up on your phone before you download. Generally speaking, the more precise you can be with your location, the smaller the file size. If you turn on “auto-update” in the settings menu, your maps will refresh about once every two weeks to include the latest data.

When offline, keep in mind that you won’t have real-time traffic data until you have connectivity again. Any travel time between destinations before then will be an estimate calculated as if there is no traffic congestion.

How to download offline Google Maps automatically

The best way to ensure you have access to Google Maps navigation when offline is to make sure your app is configured to automatically download them when you start your journey.

This method is reliant on you having cell or Wi-Fi signal when you set off, but it also ensures Google Maps doesn't lose your position midway through your trip.

1. Open Google Maps and search for your destination .

3. Tap Directions and then Start, or hit the Start icon at the bottom of the screen.

4. Get driving. Google Maps will download the entire route and store it safely for the duration of the trip.

Google Maps also has the ability to download maps for areas you friend or places it knows you're heading to — assuming, of course, it's connected to your calendar and email account.

Google Maps can prompt you to do this manually, but there is a way to let the app do things automatically. That way you will always have access to directions, even if you didn't think to download a map of the area beforehand.

1. Open the Google Maps menu by tapping your profile icon in the top right corner.

2. Select the Offline Maps option and hit the gear icon in the top right.

3. Make sure Auto-download recommended maps is toggled on.

4. Toggle on Auto-update offline maps — this will also ensure that your phone's storage doesn't get bogged down with old and unnecessary maps that have been saved.

5. Download preferences will also let you set those downloads to Wi-Fi only or if you're happy for it to come out of your cellular data plan.

And that's it. Disadvantages of Offline Maps

There are some things to bear in mind with downloaded offline maps.

1. Storage Space

It can take up a lot of storage space on your phone, so make sure you have plenty of space before you try to download anything.

It’s also a good idea to delete the offline maps you no longer need once you’re done using them. You can update, delete or edit the name of your saved offline maps in the Offline maps menu.

2. Name Your Maps

Edit the names of your maps (which are automatically saved as Map 1, Map 2, etc.) to avoid confusion and for quick and easy selection when you are out and about.

3. Update Google Maps

Make sure you download or update your maps before heading out to get the most recent data for that area, or you can activate the auto-update settings. Most downloaded maps expire after 15 days and will auto-delete, as Google Maps is constantly updating its data.

4. Offline Features

Not every feature of Google Maps will be available offline. For example, you won’t be able to access most walking, cycling, or public transport routes, and there will be no live traffic updates. Additionally, some areas in the world are not available to download offline. Make sure to plan ahead, just in case.

Thankfully, there’s a way to download Google Maps ahead of your next big adventure; so when you need to conserve your limited mobile data and can’t access Wi-Fi, or you’re traveling abroad and don’t want to pay any extra charges for your data you can still rely on your favorite Maps service

How to download directions from Google Maps to use while driving without internet

  • You can download Google Maps offline on any iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
  • Android devices can also download offline maps to their SD card.
  • However, maps will auto-delete after 15 days if they aren't updated.

Google Maps is a great travel tool — until you find yourself in the middle of an area without internet or service. Downloading maps can help avoid that issue. You just have to know where to find the option.

Here's what you need to know about getting it done.

What to know before downloading from Google Maps

There are a couple of requirements before downloading from Google Maps, whether you're using an iPhone or an Android.

First, you need to make sure you aren't in incognito mode. Second, you'll need an internet connection, for this to work. Assuming those are taken care of, you're good to go.

How to download offline Google Maps

You can download Google Maps offline on your iPhone, iPad, or Android.

On iPhone or iPad

1. Open the Google Maps app.

2. Search for the needed location.

3. Tap the name or address of the location.

4. Scroll down to the bottom fo the screen, then tap More .

5. Select Download offline map .

6. Tap Download .

2. Search for the desired location.

3. At the bottom of the screen, tap the name or address of the place.

4. Tap Download twice. Or, if you searched for a place like a restaurant, you'll have to also tap More and then Download offline map followed by Download .

How to manage offline maps

You can find downloaded Google maps within the app's Offline Maps section. By tapping into the listed offline maps, you'll have the option to delete them, rename areas (via the edit function), or update them.

Google maps: how to download and use maps offline.

Make sure you don't get lost when your internet connection does

Getting lost in a strange place, surrounded by unfamiliar landmarks and people — or worse, being surrounded by nothing and nobody — can be scary. It's even worse if you're in a foreign country where you don't speak the language and can't ask for directions. Luckily, the Google Maps app for Android and iOS is a perfect travel companion that rarely gets lost.

While Google Maps holds the top spot on our favorite travel apps , you'll want to take a few minutes to download offline maps for any areas where you live, work, or travel. Offline maps provide basic navigational details when you're in an area with poor or nonexistent data coverage. This tutorial will walk you through downloading and using offline maps in Google Maps.

How to download offline maps in Google Maps

You can download offline maps for your hometown and anywhere you may travel. These maps provide basic navigational details, meaning you won't have Street View access , traffic updates, public transport navigation, bicycle routes, or Google's Busy Areas feature.

Additionally, you need free storage space on your device to download the maps. The bigger the territory, the more space you'll need. However, you can download maps on your microSD card if your phone supports it, or you can quickly f ree up storage space on your phone. With that out of the way, let's look at how to download Google Maps for offline use.

We've used an Android phone for this tutorial, but the steps are the same for iPhone users.

Open the Google Maps app while connected to the internet.

  • Use the search bar to find the place you want to download. For example, Dallas.
  • Click the three-dot menu button in the upper-right corner.
  • Select Download offline map .
  • Use a two-finger pinch to zoom in or out to change the size of the blue rectangle. The blue rectangle determines the size of your map, so include any landmarks or areas you are likely to travel to.

There is a size limit to the amount of map area you can download. Not in terms of data but physical map area. If the selection rectangle shrinks when you pinch to zoom out, download as much as possible and repeat the process to download additional maps. Downloading multiple overlapping maps is the easiest way to save offline information for a large area. Plus, you can download as many offline maps as your storage allows.

How to configure offline maps

After downloading your first offline map, adjust some ancillary settings to maximize the offline maps feature. Offline maps expire after a year, meaning you can't access them afterward. So, updating them occasionally is important. Here are some options that come with offline maps.

Rename your offline maps for easy access

Labeling your offline maps makes it easier to manage them later. Perhaps you want to delete ones you no longer need to free up your storage.

  • Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
  • Under Downloaded maps or Recommended maps , find the offline map you want to rename.
  • Tap the three-dots menu button to the right of the map details.

Set up auto-update to keep your offline maps up to date

While Google Maps lets you update maps manually, allowing automatic updates to downloaded maps makes more sense. To activate automatic updates, navigate to the Offline maps page and take these steps:

  • On the Offline maps page, tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner to open Offline maps settings .

That's pretty much it. Your maps will automatically update. No more worrying if a map is the latest and most accurate.

Tweak your network settings to save data

Update your network preferences to ensure offline maps only update when you want them to. While on the Offline maps settings page, follow these steps:

  • On the Offline maps page, select the gear icon .
  • If you want maps to download when connected to Wi-Fi, tap Download preferences and select Over Wi-Fi only . This applies to maps you manually download and automatic updates.
  • Select Over Wi-Fi or mobile network if you need your offline maps to download while on a mobile network .

Update offline maps storage preferences

If you have a phone with microSD expansion, Google allows you to save offline maps to your expandable storage. To allow microSD storage for offline maps, go to the Offline maps page and follow these steps:

Google Maps deletes your existing offline maps after updating the storage preferences. So, you're better off leaving offline maps on your internal storage unless you're running out of space.

On the Offline maps page, tap the gear icon .

  • Select SD card to change to microSD storage for offline maps. Google Maps shows the remaining space on your SD card and internal storage to help you make an informed decision.

While on the Offline maps settings page, you'll notice a setting we haven't touched on: Automatically download recommended maps . After activating the feature, Maps automatically downloads maps that Google thinks you could use. It uses frequently visited places and your home and work addresses to determine which maps to download.

We haven't touched this setting because any option you don't have direct control over is never as reliable as it needs to be. If you want offline maps for your work or home neighborhoods, download those maps manually through the process described above.

How to delete unused offline maps

You've now downloaded and configured offline maps to your preferences. When you're done with your trip or move to a new town or city, you may not want those unused maps using up storage. Most offline maps are under 100MB, so keeping them for future use is smart. However, here's how to delete them if you're running low on storage.

  • Navigate to the Offline maps settings page.
  • Find the map you want to delete, then tap the three dots to the right of the map information.
  • From there, tap Delete.

Getting lost is no longer an excuse for avoiding traveling

Getting lost in a new city or state may not be fun, but can sometimes be adventurous. As long as you know you're safe, getting lost can lead to discovering new places and getting to know your country better. However, you don't have to risk getting lost in a dangerous place when offline maps can act as a safety net. Besides, you can plan your trip using Google apps so that you can focus on enjoying yourself.

But what if you get lost in a foreign country with a different language and didn't download offline maps after arriving? Use Google Translate or say, "Hey Google, be my interpreter."

11 Useful Travel Apps That Work Just Fine Offline

No Internet? No Problem.

Hinterhaus Productions/Getty Images

Having access to cell data while traveling overseas is often complicated, slow, limited, and expensive . Even in the United States, fast, reliable coverage everywhere is far from certain once you get outside major metro areas.

Fortunately, there are many travel apps that don’t need a real-time data connection at all. Instead, they can be synced via WiFi in advance then used in offline mode while on the move, saving money and frustration during your travels.

Here are 11 of the most useful examples, and there are many others depending on your needs. All are available on at least iOS and Android.

Google Maps

Courtesy of Google Maps

Google Maps has a checkered history when it comes to its offline abilities, but 2018 and 2019 versions brought back support for unlimited saved areas and added offline turn-by-turn navigation.

It's easy to pick towns, cities, or regions, sync them to your phone, then get driving directions even in flight mode. However, you won't get cycling, public transport, or walking directions without a connection, unfortunately, but can still see where you are on the map in real-time.

Courtesy of Here WeGo

Originally developed by Nokia, Here WeGo is likely the best offline navigation app out there. Unlike Google Maps, it can give directions for walking, cycling, and public transit even while offline, and downloading map data for entire regions or countries is very straightforward.

Directions are generally accurate. However, when you're offline, it helps to have the exact address of the place you're going, not just a name. Also, pay attention to the storage requirements for this app since you'll need plenty of space on your phone if you want to download maps for several countries.

Courtesy of Tripit

Tripit has been around for years and is still the best way to manage your itinerary with or without a data connection. It can monitor your email for travel bookings and updates—or you can manually forward confirmations if you’d prefer—and the app will continue to sync the latest updates whenever it has an Internet connection.

Hotels, flights, car rentals, and more are all stored in one place, and the service automatically builds a detailed itinerary for you. The basic Tripit app is free, but there is also a Pro version available that has a few extra features.

XE Currency

Courtesy of XE Currency

XE Currency is a long-time favorite for making currency conversions quickly and easily. Before you head out, add the currencies you'll likely use to the app's database; then you use the free app offline anywhere you want.

It’ll instantly convert from a selected currency to all the others you've saved, taking a few seconds at most. This makes it ideal when out shopping, or standing at the  bureau de change  to ensure you’re being offered a reasonable exchange rate.

However, it's important to keep in mind that the XE Currency app only updates when connected to the internet, and currency rates may change while you're traveling. Be sure to update the app when you get a chance to get online to avoid confusion.

Courtesy of Triposo

If you're looking for a travel guide, check out Triposo. It bundles information from Wikipedia, Wikitravel, and elsewhere all together into an easy-to-use offline guide.

Download the data pack for your destination(s) before leaving home, since they can be pretty large, and you’ll have activities, hotels, and restaurants, maps, and basic directions all at your fingertips.

Additionally, the app includes background information about destinations around the world, phrasebooks, currency conversion, and more for free, all of which can be used while offline.

Courtesy of Pocket

Whenever you're planning a trip, you'll inevitably end up saving a lot of information about your intended destination—restaurant recommendations, places to go, navigation information, and more. To ensure you can access it all offline, install the Pocket browser extension and app.

One click or tap saves your current web page, and the app then automatically syncs everything whenever it has a WiFi connection. All that saved information stays available on your phone, wherever and whenever you need it.

The Pocket app is also a great tool for storing entertainment from Youtube, news articles from Vox and the New York Times, and even funny gifs from Twitter and Reddit.

Google Translate

Courtesy of Google Translate

When it comes to translation, Google Translate is the stand-out performer. Both the iOS and Android versions let you download over 50 different language packs, allowing for quick translation of words and phrases when on the move.

While offline, you can either type in the words you'd like to translate, or just point your phone camera at a menu, sign, or other printed material. If you're traveling somewhere you don't speak the language, it's an absolute lifesaver in many situations—especially when you feel lost.

Courtesy of  WifiMap

There’s even an offline app to help you get online. The paid version of Wifi Map lets you download its database of WiFi locations for entire cities ahead of time so that you can fire up the app when you’re away from home and find the nearest WiFi hotspot.

Information, including location and password, is entered by the app's users, and there are over one hundred million networks currently listed around the world.

As mentioned, the version with offline support isn't free—but at five dollars, it's a small price to pay to have Internet access when you need it.

American Red Cross First Aid

Courtesy of American Red Cross First Aid

The American Red Cross has developed a small range of health-based apps, and the most useful for travelers are based around first aid.

Covering things like anaphylaxis, burns, bleeding, and much more, the American Red Cross First Aid app helps teach appropriate techniques in advance via video training and provides step-by-step guidance on what to do in an emergency. There's also a quiz section, to make sure you've retained what you learned.

TripAdvisor

Courtesy of TripAdvisor

It's pretty hard to avoid TripAdvisor when planning a vacation—it is the leading website for restaurant, accommodation, and attraction reviews. You'll usually come across it from a Google search, but if you want offline access, it's worth downloading the company's app as well.

It works much the same as the website, but also lets you download reviews, maps, and your saved locations for over 300 popular cities around the world.

Courtesy of Spotify

Streaming music services are now the main way most of us listen to our favorite tunes, but they've got a couple of disadvantages for travelers: they don't work offline, and use quite a bit of data if you listen for hours.

Spotify gets around that problem by letting you download songs, podcasts, albums, and playlists to your device. Once that's done, the songs will play normally even when you don't have a connection—just switch into Offline mode, and you'll only see the tracks you've saved.

Note that you'll need a paid subscription to Spotify to enable the offline feature.

Download areas and navigate offline

If you're going somewhere where the Internet is slow, mobile data is expensive or you can't get online, you can save an area from Google Maps to your phone or tablet and use it when you're offline.

Note : Download of offline maps isn't available in some regions because of contractual limitations, language support, address formats or other reasons.

  • Get directions and show routes
  • Use navigation
  • Search for locations

Tip: Public transport, bicycling or walking directions are unavailable offline. In your offline driving directions, you can’t get traffic info or alternative routes.

iOS 17: How to download and use offline maps with Apple Maps

Avatar for Benjamin Mayo

Apple Maps has improved leaps and bounds over the last decade, but one area it has always been lacking is offline use. Google Maps and others have let you download maps to be available offline for a long time.

That feature gap is now closed with iOS 17. Apple Maps now lets you download a maps region to store on your device, and use entirely offline for navigation and routing without an internet connection. Here’s how.

Offline maps are useful when travelling abroad, but also at home when you can’t always rely on a network being available. If you often travel through cellular deadspots, especially applicable to some highways and suburban areas, having maps available offline is a nice safety net so that you know you won’t get lost.

With Apple Maps on iOS 17, you can now save a region of the map locally on your iPhone. As long as you stay inside the bounds of the downloaded map, you can get turn-by-turn directions entirely offline; for driving, walking, cycling, for transit. You can also simple pan and zoom around the map in the Maps app, with no waiting for things to load. Offline maps also include POI data like opening hours.

Apple Maps downloaded to your iPhone will also be available on the Apple Watch, when the paired iPhone is nearby. The watch cannot download maps directly.

How to download an offline map in iOS 17

download offline tourist map

  • To download a map, press on your avatar in the panel and press on the new Offline Maps button.
  • Select “Download New Map”.
  • Search for the area you want to download. iOS will automatically suggest your home area.
  • On the preview, you can refine the bounds and the app will tell you how much storage space you’ll need to save the map.
  • Press “Download” button to confirm and the map will appear in the Downloaded list.

Obviously, the larger the region, the bigger the download size. You can repeat the process and download as many different regions as you need. What’s also nice is that offline maps are not a one-time static snapshot; they will be automatically updated with the latest changes, when a network is available.

Downloads default to happening only over the WiFi network. You can change the setting to download over cellular as well.

Offline Only Mode

download offline tourist map

With a map downloaded, when no network is available, Apple Maps will use the downloaded map if applicable for your current location. When internet is available, Maps will always look up data over the network to incorporate information like realtime traffic.

However, you can force the app to only use downloaded map content. To do this, from the same settings panel as described above, enable the toggle for “Only Use Offline Maps”.

10 hidden Google Maps features, tips, and tricks

  • With Google Maps, you can download maps for offline viewing, invite family to see your location, and more.
  • We've rounded up actually useful Google Maps features as well as tips and tricks you might not know.
  • We've all used Google Maps, but with these tips, you'll become an expert power user.

It's safe to say that all of us would be lost (literally) without our Google Maps app. It has completely replaced the old method of looking at outdated paper maps, writing down directions, and, let's be honest, getting lost basically all the time. Now, all we need to do is type in our destination, method of travel, and a handy little line will guide us wherever we want.

Everyone knows how to use Google Maps for basic navigation, but few people have explored just how much more you can do with this handy app . These secret tips and tricks are not only fun to show off to friends but can also be genuine lifesavers while traveling. Don't worry, I won't let you get lost while explaining these 10 hidden Google Maps features.

Is Google Maps really any better than Apple Maps?

Offline maps, stay on track while off the grid.

This feature might seem obvious to highlight -- we have a guide on this -- but there are still plenty of people out there who don't know you can save your map if you expect to lose service.

By storing a map locally, you'll have access to basic map information, including roads, geographical features, and businesses in the area you've selected. You won't see opening times, reviews, and other detailed aspects that come with a Google Maps business listing, but this is only meant to get you by in a pinch. Transit, bicycling, and walking directions won't be available, either.

You can set up an offline map in a few simple steps:

  • From Maps, tap your Google account avatar at the top-right corner . Then, select Offline Maps .
  • Choose Select your own map .
  • You'll be taken to a framed map view. Pan and zoom to where you'd like your offline map to capture.
  • Tap Download . You'll then be able to access information about this region when your device is offline.

If you're planning a trip, Google Maps might pop up a notification suggesting that you download offline maps for use during your journey. These suggestions will also appear in the Offline Maps section. The app will predict if you're going to lose service based on Gmail messages and any bookings you may have made through Google Flights or Google Travel.

Google Maps captions view frames with an estimate of how much data they will take up in storage. The widest frame you can store in one offline map is approximately 140 x 280 miles or 225 x 450 kilometers. Using that area, here are some regional examples of what to expect in terms of data usage:

  • The Gibraltar region, including Seville and Málaga in Spain, and Rabat and Fes in Morocco, is less than 300MB.
  • Southern California, including Los Angeles, San Diego, and Tijuana, Mexico, is about 600MB.
  • The New York City tri-state area, including the entirety of New Jersey, the Hudson Valley, western Connecticut and Massachusetts, most of Long Island, and eastern Pennsylvania, including Greater Philadelphia, is about 800MB.
  • England, from Bournemouth to Durham on the east, including Greater London and all of Anglia, is about 1.1GB.
  • Mid-Honshu Island, Japan, with Tokyo in the south and Yamagata Prefecture in the north, is more than 2.5GB.

You can save as many maps of as many areas as your storage capacity will allow.

How to download Google Maps directions for offline use

Dictate addresses in a foreign language, break down language barriers.

Sometimes, Google Maps might not be able to guide you all the way, especially when you're traveling and are unfamiliar with the local language. Fortunately, you can use this feature to overcome the language barrier and seek assistance. If you tap on a point of interest you wish to visit and then tap on the speaker icon that appears next to its name at the top of the listing, the app will display a box containing both the name of the place and its address , along with speaker buttons . When pressed, these buttons will pronounce them in the local language. It's not a perfect solution -- especially with hyphens and numbers -- but it might just be your lifesaver if you're getting into a taxi.

Live View AR for walking navigation

Follow the arrow.

Walking directions in Google Maps have never been more convenient and clearer than with the Live View function. This feature works on iPhones and most Android phones and can be applied on roads and paths covered by Street View. We also have an entire separate guide on how to use it. Essentially, all you have to do is request directions, hit the walking tab , and then select Live View . You'll be prompted to scan your surroundings with the rear-facing camera to allow the app to orient itself. From there, just follow the giant floating arrows and signs that appear on your device. Of course, watch where you're stepping.

What is Google Maps AR navigation and Live View and how do you use it?

Check if a business is cash-only, cash or card.

I can't remember the last time I carried cash without a specific reason. I almost never encounter issues just relying on my card, but for many restaurants and shops, cash is still the only payment option available. So, before you head out to grab some noodles at a new spot, you might want to check if you need to make a visit to the ATM through Google Maps.

  • Tap on a business to bring up their listing.
  • Alternately, in the carousel of tabs below the photos, scroll all the way right and select About .
  • You'll find what forms of payment are accepted at the bottom of the Features section.

The Features section of a business listing also contains other important factors such as whether they offer vegan-friendly menu items or accessible seating.

Measuring straight-line distance

How far is that.

The drive from Boston to New York City is about 215 miles by road and 231 miles by rail. But for the times when you just want to know the distance as the crow flies, Google Maps has you covered with this rather obscure feature .

To measure straight-line distance:

  • Select a point on the map that is not a place of interest.
  • Scroll down to see if you can spot the option to measure distance -- it's labeled next to a ruler symbol.
  • You'll then be taken to a viewfinder with your "B" point anchored to the center . Pan and zoom to your destination. You'll see the total distance from your original "A" point in the bottom-left corner adjust as you move.
  • To remove a point, press the undo arrow at the top-right corner of the screen.
  • To undo all points, tap the three-dot icon and select Clear.

By the way, it's 188 miles straight between New York City and Boston. I wasn't going to leave you hanging.

How to measure a distance with Google Maps

Remember where you parked, don't lose your spot.

As hilarious as the Seinfeld episode is, where the gang spends the entire runtime wandering around a parking garage looking for their car, experiencing it in real life is anything but amusing. Even if you're fortunate enough to park in a location with labeled spots, it's all too easy to forget where you've left your car. Google Maps can assist you not only when you're in your car but also in finding your way back to it.

When you first exit your vehicle, remember to open Google Maps and tap the blue dot marking your current location. Then, select Save Parking. A pin with the letter P will mark where you've parked. You can press "More Info" to adjust the location, enter any notes, and even include how much time you've paid for if you're at a metered spot. You will receive a notification when your time is about to expire, based on your walking distance from the spot.

Get ahead of traffic

Avoid any jams.

Suppose you're planning a drive for later in the day and you're seeking an idea of how long it might take. The issue at present is that Google Maps defaults to estimating drive times based on current traffic conditions. And, as we all understand, later is not now.

For the road warriors eager to adjust their departure time on Google Maps, all you need to do after inputting your destination is tap on the three-dot icon at the top-right corner and choose Set Depart or Arrive Time . You'll be able to set your departure or arrival time for any point in the future.

Google will label route options with a range of drive times for each, based on typical traffic conditions for that part of the day. Of course, actual results may vary since Google can't see the future...yet.

Air quality measurements

Breathe easy.

Poor air quality is detrimental to your health, but it is usually impossible to account for until you've had a lungful. Nevertheless, it can be a fact of life when dealing with massive wildfires, volcanic eruptions, or just plain heat and humidity that allow pollutants to hang in the air so easily.

Google Maps is able to display air quality measurements in nine countries. This data is collected at measuring stations set up by governments and private networks of air quality monitors. The jurisdictions include:

  • Australia via state and territory governments
  • South Korea
  • United States

To check air quality conditions, select the Layer View button in the top-right corner (the one that looks like a stack of two squares). Then, under the Map Details section, tap on Air Quality. You'll be able to view the latest readings in all supported regions, not just your home area. Additionally, you may be able to see overlays indicating where large smoke plumes are currently located.

Google Maps rolling out Air Quality Index, here's how to check it

Last transit trip home, don't miss your ride.

When it comes to a night out in the city, public transit beats driving hands-down, especially after a few drinks. However, since most transit lines stop operating after a certain point in the night, you'll definitely want to know when to make your great escape for the last bus or train. Otherwise, you'll face the consequences of ride app surge pricing.

To check on your last possible transit journey with Google Maps, ensure you've entered your starting point and destination correctly (tap the up and down arrows icon to switch them around if necessary) and then tap the Depart at Time filter . You'll see a section that says "Last." Select that, then hit Set to see your options.

Share your location with friends and family

Keep tabs on each other.

Google's Pixel phones and Apple's iPhone offer safety features built into their firmware that allow you to keep tabs on your friends and close family. Many messaging apps, like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, also offer this feature. However, we believe that using real-time location sharing on Google Maps is a great idea. If you're trying to coordinate where you'll be in an hour, why not use a proper, fully loaded mapping app to do it? Our full guide to location sharing on Google Maps is available here .

South Africa elections live results 2024: By the numbers

About 28 million people are registered to vote in national and provincial elections.

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) is leading with more than a 40 percent share of the national vote after half of the ballots have been counted, a day after the country went to the polls for national and provincial  elections that are widely predicted to test the ANC’s 30-year rule.

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) started counting votes soon after polling ended on Wednesday. The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s principal opposition party, is currently in second place.

Here is how the top four parties are doing, according to the latest updates from the IEC.

Which are the main parties in the race?

Four of the biggest players to watch out for in this year’s elections are the ANC, the DA, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Previous election results

The ANC has won all national elections since the end of apartheid in 1994 when Nelson Mandela became the country’s first Black president.

In 1994, the ANC won 62.5 percent of the vote. In 1999, it won 66.4 percent. In 2004, it reached its highest levels, clinching almost 70 percent of the vote. In 2009, it won nearly 66 percent, and in 2014, it won 62 percent.

In the last election in 2019, the ANC achieved its lowest margin of victory, winning 57.5 percent of the vote.

The DA has come second in the past five elections.

Parties in current National Assembly

The lower house of parliament is currently represented by 400 members of 14 political parties, allocated proportionally based on the votes each party received in the 2019 elections.

  • ANC: 230 seats (57.5 percent)
  • DA: 84 seats (21 percent)
  • EFF: 44 seats (11 percent)
  • Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP): 14 seats (3.5 percent)

Ten other parties make up the remaining 28 seats.

How is the president elected?

South Africans do not directly vote for the president.

Instead, they elect the members of the National Assembly, who then elect the president by a simple majority – 201 or more votes determine the presidency.

If the ANC secures the majority, President Cyril Ramaphosa, 71, is likely to be re-elected as president to serve his second and final five-year term.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 - Ramaphosa and ANC-1716730770

What if no party receives a majority?

Opinion polls suggest the governing ANC, which is hovering at about  40 percent support, may lose its majority.

If this happens, the ANC will need to make a deal with other parties to form a coalition government. The choice of coalition partner will depend on the support needed to cross the 50 percent mark.

Unless the ANC performs much worse than expected, there is a slim chance it could be completely removed from power.

When will the final results be announced?

In the last national election held on May 8, 2019, the final results were announced three days later.

However, this year, with one more ballot to count, verifying results may take longer.

The IEC says it will announce the election results on Sunday.
