Vehicle overview.

The 2010 Dodge Journey crossover SUV is effectively a replacement for Chrysler's now defunct short-wheelbase minivans -- a family-friendly vehicle that's a bit more maneuverable than the regular Grand Caravan. The Journey does indeed fill this void in functional terms, offering lots of room for larger families and a number of pleasant convenience and technology features. The question is whether buyers will find its interior quality and driving dynamics sufficient relative to the ever-improving competition. After all, a journey is hardly worth taking if you're not going to enjoy the trip.

The Journey's strength is clearly its cabin functionality, where the influence of Chrysler's minivans is unmistakable. Its optional third-row seat sets it apart from two-row crossover SUVs, providing enough room for kids. The Journey is also loaded with clever, well-conceived minivan-style conveniences, from the Flip 'n Stow storage compartment under the front passenger seat to the Chill Zone glovebox beverage cooler. Other neat options include MyGIG, Chrysler's hard-drive-based navigation and entertainment system, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch screen. If what you're after is a versatile interior at a reasonable price, the Journey certainly delivers.

Speaking of pricing, that's another of the Journey's strengths, as the base SE model costs about the same as a bare-bones five-seat family sedan. How does Dodge do it? Simple: It skimps on interior quality and performance. The Journey's cabin materials are no nicer than those of the dismal Dodge Caliber economy car, on which the Journey is based. As for performance, the base four-cylinder engine is slow and noisy, and the V6-powered SXT and R/T models aren't particularly swift either. Moreover, all Journeys feature ponderous handling and steering that instills little confidence, even by the workaday standards of this segment.

Overall, the 2010 Dodge Journey has a split personality. On the one hand, it has interior versatility and technology to spare; on the other hand, it's built like a cheap runabout and performs like one, too. Among competing crossovers, Toyota's RAV4 offers a third-row seat along with better performance, and the surprisingly enjoyable Kia Rondo is another model to consider. The larger, three-row Ford Flex starts at about the same price as a loaded Journey, and is superior in every way. And if you don't need the Journey's optional third row, virtually any two-row crossover SUV on the market will be more pleasant to drive and own. Finally, our consumer reviews show a record of poor reliability in a number of areas. We do not recommend the Journey.

Performance & mpg

The base-model Journey SE comes with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. Uplevel SXT and R/T trim levels employ a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 235 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. It's matched to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. On these trim levels, buyers have a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. In our testing, an all-wheel-drive R/T model went from zero to 60 mph in an unremarkable 9.2 seconds -- just as slow as competing four-cylinder models.

The EPA gives the four-cylinder Journey ratings of 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. The front-drive V6 drops to 16/24/19, and adding AWD yields a 15/23/18 rating. None of the above is very good relative to the competition.

Every 2010 Journey includes antilock disc brakes, traction control, rollover-sensing stability control, active front head restraints, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags for all three rows. A rearview camera is optional, as are handy built-in second-row child booster seats, a first in this segment. In brake testing, a Journey R/T came to a stop in a longish 132 feet.

In crash tests, the Journey received perfect ratings in all categories. The government awarded it five starts in both front and side impacts, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Journey its highest "Good" rating for both frontal-offset and side impacts.

Despite its plebeian Caliber roots, the 2010 Dodge Journey is a well-fed specimen, with even the base SE model tipping the scales at a hefty 3,800 pounds. The four-cylinder engine is simply overmatched here -- there's not nearly enough power to merge confidently on the highway, and it sounds as strained as it feels. The V6 in the SXT and R/T models is more appropriate, returning decent acceleration and passing power, but it's still well behind the standard-setting V6 in the RAV4.

On the open road, the Journey stays quiet, but its steering is terribly numb and vague. Handling is also poor, even in the ostensibly sporty R/T model. Overall, few crossovers are as unpleasant to drive as this Dodge.

Inside, the 2010 Dodge Journey is a spacious, versatile family hauler. Families with one or two children should find more than enough room in the first two rows, and the optional 50/50-split third-row seat can serve as a sort of emergency backup for kids.The second-row seats slide fore and aft, and access to the third-row seats is a breeze. All-around comfort is reduced somewhat due to the hard and flat seats, however, and the low placement of the audio controls makes them awkward to reach for the driver -- especially with the optional touchscreen-controlled stereo. Materials quality and fit and finish are notably subpar.

In terms of utility, there's obvious influence from Chrysler's minivans, as the Journey's interior is awash in cupholders, lidded storage bins and cubbyholes, including tubs beneath the second-row floor and an ingenious compartment beneath the front passenger seat. Maximum cargo capacity is 68 cubic feet, a bit less than what's available in some competing models.

2010 Dodge Journey models

A midsize crossover SUV, the 2010 Dodge Journey comes in SE, SXT and R/T trim levels. All models come standard with two-row seating for five; with the optional 50/50-split-folding third-row bench (SXT and R/T only), capacity increases to seven.

The base SE comes with 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, full power accessories and a six-speaker stereo with a six-disc CD/MP3 changer. The midgrade SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, heated side mirrors, a trip computer, enhanced interior storage, stain-resistant cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 115-volt power outlet and satellite radio. The top-drawer R/T features 19-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

Dodge bundles most of the Journey's optional features into packages, and many of the upper trim levels' features are available as options for the lower trims. Other major options, depending on the trim level, include a Chrome Appearance package, sport-tuned suspension and steering, Bluetooth, an iPod adapter, tri-zone climate control, a rear-seat entertainment system and a hard-drive-based navigation and audio system with a back-up camera.

Dodge Journey 2,7 V6 R/T

BACK in the late-1960s, one of the fanciest executive cars you could aspire to own was the Dodge Monaco. Unlike our test vehicle, the Dodge Journey, with its V6 engine and front-wheel drive, the Monaco sported a V8 engine and rear-wheel drive. We do notice at least one similarity, though – they can both seat up to seven people. But, whereas the limousine from the ’60s used two bench seats to achieve this, the latest from the ramemblem stable uses three rows of individual seats. It is dubbed a cross-over vehicle, somewhat MPV, somewhat SUV. American cars don’t always offer the appeal that European stylists manage to accomplish, but the Dodge family presents some interesting designs. The Journey is a good looker for a large people conveyer, especially in the test car’s “inferno red” livery although, as always, there were mixed emotions from our team. The big chromed grille is typical Dodge fare, and the flared wheelarches add to the appeal. This test involves the 2,7-litre V6 model – there is also a 103 kW 2,0-litre diesel-engined version – which has 136 kW at 5 500 r/min and 256 N.m of torque at 4 000 r/min. The engine is transversely mounted and, surprisingly for such a layout, leaves lots of under-bonnet space for servicing access, a very rare sight these days. Our test unit was the R/T version that includes leather rather than cloth upholstery, and two extra inches on the wheels, up from 17 to 19 inches in diameter. This does come at a price though, some R30 000 more than the SXT model.

The leather-trimmed seats look ostentatious in their two-tone colour scheme (different combinations are offered) but are rather flat, not providing much support. The driver’s seat has electric fore/aft adjustment, but uses a lever for height, lumbar support and backrest rake. The steering wheel adjusts for reach as well as height. Leg- and foot room are also acceptable, better than most Jeep models, and headroom is plentiful. Interior and exterior door handles are chrome plated. Roof rails also have a chrome finish.

Many cars, especially of American origin, like to warn you about all sorts of things with “bings” and “bongs”. This can be very annoying yet, oddly, the Journey does so when you leave the key in the ignition and open the driver’s door, but not if you fail to put on your seatbelt – when you are faced with a flashing light for a few seconds. Two gloveboxes are provided ahead of the front passenger seat. The upper one has a rubber bracket for holding two drink cans that can be kept cool via the air-conditioner. The front passenger seat cushion can be flipped up to reveal a storage compartment that is quite deep, and more storage room can be found in the footwells of the middle row in the form of a pair of underfloor compartments that are spacious enough for a couple of cameras or a shopping bag. Alternatively, you could keep food or drinks cool, since a deep waterproof plastic tray can be partially filled with ice and removed later for cleaning. Very neat!

Two other useful features are the flip-down mirror that allows the driver to keep an eye on what is happening in the back, and a rechargeable torch, flushmounted into the left-hand luggage area behind the last row of seats.

Auxiliary audio controls are situated behind the steering wheel rim, their functions quickly understood and requiring very little finger movement to operate, with buttons on the front activating the display menu, which includes trip information. One button has the sole function of displaying the compass and outside temperature, but cannot be pushed twice to return to the previous information – another button must be used for this. Luckily, the Dodge has conventional sun visors that you pull towards yourself to release, unlike some Jeep models that require you to push the sun visor away from you first, then drop it slightly and pull it back to swivel. Air vents are neatly designed and have a classy finish.

An important entertainment feature (optional, mind you), is the MyGig system, available for R16 900. This consists of GPS navigation with touch screen, voice command, a 30-gigabyte hard drive, and a six-CD/DVD front loader fitted to the excellent Infinity audio system. An auxiliary input and USB port are provided as well. A rear-view camera also forms part of this package. This system has its controls at the lower end of the hangdown section of the facia and really looks business-like, although the myriad buttons and knobs take a while to master. These are all of good quality, however. A rear seat video entertainment system is available. This costs R15 000 and includes a console-mounted DVD player with two headsets and auxiliary input jacks. Luggage space is reasonable, with even a respectable 112 dm3 available when all seven seats are in use. This expands to 392 dm3 with the rearmost seats collapsed, and measures a spacious 1 390 dm3 with only the front seats in use. A cargo net is supplied plus a cloth screen that acts as a flexible, hook-on parcel shelf to hide your shopping. The front passenger seat backrest can also be collapsed forwards to allow longer objects to be carried. A clever mechanism allows the middle row of seats (split 60:40) to be slid forwards while the cushion rises to increase the travel. This gives fairly easy access to the last two seats. Dual-zone climate control takes care of front seat occupants, and an overhead panel above the centre row gives the rest of your clan the option of adjusting their own temperature, fan speed and air distribution via four roof-mounted vents that can be individually angled or closed in addition to foot-level vents. Each door has a pocket with space for a water bottle, and the last two seats have armrests with incorporated drinkholders, so you have to choose between resting your arm or your drinks. Yet more features include heated front seats, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, folding side mirrors and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Dual 12v outlets are supplied in the lower facia section with another in the centre and yet another at the rear. Our test unit had a dodgy car alarm that kept going off and annoying anyone within earshot, so we had to leave the car permanently unlocked. Under the rear floor, a storage compartment houses the tyre changing equipment and leaves enough hiding space for quite a few items. The space-saver spare wheel frees up volume needed by the extra row of seats. We had occasion to use this due to a cut in the sidewall of a rear tyre, and wouldn’t like to travel too far with it, since it looks puny next to the massive 19-inch road wheels.

The engine is rather noisy at low speeds due to belt whine, but this is only noticeable outside the car. Inside, noise levels are quite low at all speeds.

Performance is adequate for the size of vehicle, with a top speed of 182 km/h and a 0-to-100 km/h time of 11,1 seconds. Top speed was achieved with the gearbox just making the shift from fourth into fifth gear at 6 400 r/min, the revs dropping to 4 500. This shows the extent of overdrive gearing provided in top gear. At 120 km/h in sixth, the engine is turning over at only 2 000 r/min. Gear changes are smooth and fairly rapid for a conventional gearbox, but there is quite a bit of slip in the initial pullaway, which hampers progress for a moment. Six ratios mean that the transmission struggles to decide which gear to select: it can drop up to three gears in succession for overtaking acceleration. Fuel consumption is unexceptional, with an index figure of 12,36 litres/100 km, so employing a light right foot will help save money and oil reserves. A large fuel tank of 78 litres provides a holiday friendly range of just over 600 km.

Although the steering has a slightly remote feeling, it shouldn’t annoy most drivers, and the ride is soft and leisurely, which is fit for the purpose.

Long journeys should be very satisfying in this vehicle. Razorsharp handling might not be its forté, but we don’t foresee any owners upsetting their passengers by leaning it briskly into corners at speed anyway.

Holden has unveiled a new Commodore running on fuel that is up to 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol. Caltex is opening its first E85 pumps around the country with up to 100 to be available by next year.

The good news is that apart from ethanol being cleaner and greener than petrol, the fuel company vows the new fuel will be "priced significantly below unleaded petrol."

Unlike diesel or hybrid cars, you don't have to pay a premium for the E85 compatibility. And unlike LPG, which is also cheaper than petrol, you won't need to lose most of your boot space for a tank. However you will need to buy a car whose engine is equipped to run E85. Apart from the upcoming Commodores and some Saabs, Dodge's Journey people mover and its sister Chrysler Sebring Cabrio share an E85 compatible engine.

Priced about the same as many of its competitors, the flexible-fuel Journey could become a thrifty option for families once you have somewhere to fill up.

With the Journey range priced from $36,990 to $46,990, we tested the mid-range $41,990 2.7-litre petrol V6 R/T. That's the same price as the glamour-leader among people movers, Honda’s Odyssey, significantly cheaper than the class-leading Toyota Tarago but a few thousand dollars dearer than the base Kia Carnival at $35,990.

While the Journey is seen as a seven-seater, it’s really a 5+2 as there's not much leg room in the third row for anyone other than small children, and in this mode there's also very little boot space. The seats are easy to manoeuvre by a lever, making it flexible for a variety of uses and for family access.

Integrated child booster seats come standard with the extra row, eliminating a need to carry child seats. There are plenty of cupholders, side and front row central storage compartments, a cooler in the glovebox, but it misses front row armrests.

The sound system is good without being great; the reversing camera is handy in a car of this size while features such as satellite navigation and TV screens in the back of the front row headrests are available as options.

When you can buy E85 you will need to buy more to go the same distance than a petrol car would travel, as ethanol has less energy. The saving is in its cheaper pump price.

The 2.7-litre engine puts out 136kW/256Nm, slightly better than the Odyssey and the huge Hyundai iMax, but well below the V6 Tarago and V6 Grand Carnival. It has a workhorse six-speed auto gearbox. In full petrol use it averages a claimed 10.3l/100km, though in city traffic that leaps to 15L. Without an E85 pump to be found we couldn't test that figure.

There are people movers that look like vans, some that look like mini-buses, others that resemble wagons and none that look like sports cars. The Journey is unique because it can easily be taken for an SUV. Its high stance, squarish shape and the Dodge grille give it more macho looks than its competitors.

Drivers buy people movers out of necessity rather than desire. For those who don't have large families, coach sports teams or run a chauffeur service, it’s easy to look down at many bland people movers. But not the American Journey, its tougher looks give it a meaner presence on the road.

There's plenty of the basic essential safety gear on board with Electronic Stability Control, brake assist, front and side airbags among the standard equipment. The SUV-like high seating position is also a bonus to see ahead in traffic. It's a pity the features don't extend to an automatic opening rear hatch on this model as it is heavy to lift and high to reach when you need to close it.

The Dodge is a keen worker. I first tested it under light load as the sole occupant and it showed spritely acceleration and a smooth and comfortable drive, even on notorious bumps and potholes.

It also got loaded up with boxes and gear to help move house. Although it felt more sluggish as would be expected it showed some guts when laden. In fact the drive was better with some weight on board. It made the car more stable on the road.

One concern is how noisy it us under acceleration from a standing start, with the engine roaring as it searches for the next gear.

VERDICT : The Journey is a versatile, competent people mover with good looks and comfortable ride. I just wish it had armrests. Its E85 fuel-compatibility may prove to be a sleeper for boosting sales.
