Weather in Detroit: Climate, Seasons, and Average Monthly Temperature
Blessed with a four-season climate, Detroit—one of America’s most northern metropolises—offers beautiful shoulder seasons in spring and fall. You’ll find fewer crowds at museums and attractions and you won't have to worry about sweating or freezing. Winter in Detroit can be intense, but don’t be scared off by the cold. Just like in cities such as Chicago and New York City, locals have navigated these blustery conditions for decades and you can, too, if you’re wearing the right clothes (read: layers and a puffy jacket). Winter is also usually when Detroit’s museums host world-class exhibits.
Summer is also a vibrant time to visit Detroit as this is when Michigan’s largest city (around 673,000 residents) comes alive with festivals and other events, plus the parks’ flowers and trees are at their most colorful state. Restaurants add outdoor seating on sidewalks and patios. And you can easily find a free outdoor concert nearly every night of the week.
- Hottest Month: July (83 degrees F / 28 degrees C)
- Coldest Month: January (31 degrees F / -1 degrees C)
- Wettest Month: May (3.5 inches)
Winter in Detroit
With rock-bottom hotel rates and the fact that Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) is a major airline hub for Delta Airlines, you just might score a winter trip at a fraction of what you’d pay during the summer. A winter trip to Detroit will include mostly indoor activities but the city has a staggering number of museums and indoor cultural attractions, not to mention the burgeoning farm-to-table movement and all those chic new boutique hotels. Another perk is that you won’t have throngs of tourists. If you’re into winter sports, such as Nordic cross-country skiing, this is the best season to visit, with sporting opportunities in the Detroit metro area as well as day trips.
Take note of the Detroit Pistons’ (Detroit’s NBA team) and Detroit Red Wings’ (Detroit’s NHL team) home schedules as the influx of fans into the city can seriously increase hotel rates.
What to Pack: Don’t even think about going outside without a hat and gloves. You can probably do without a scarf if you’re walking outside on a day without windchill. A puffy, packable, winter jacket is ideal.
Average Temperatures by Month
December: 35 degrees F / 24 degrees F (2 degrees C / -4 degrees C)
January: 31 degrees F / 19 degrees F (-1 degree C / -7 degrees C)
February: 32 degrees F / 18 degrees F (0 degree C / -8 degrees C)
Spring in Detroit
Because winter can be brutal some years, Detroiters live for spring—and it shows. This is when daffodils poke out of the ground, knitwear is swapped out for floral patterns, and some of the city’s most stunning outdoor spaces really come alive. Fortunately, spring is also before crowds converge on Detroit, so you can enjoy museum galleries without elbowing your way through and even take a long walk in some of the most eclectic neighborhoods. If you can, avoid graduation weekends at local universities and colleges (including Wayne State University), as well as dining pretty much anywhere on Mother’s Day.
What to Pack: The Midwest, including Detroit, gets a lot of rain during spring. Showers can last for hours, unlike sporadic rain you’ll find in Florida or another tropical climate, and it’s not uncommon to experience snow through the first week of April. Definitely pack an umbrella, a purse or tote that zippers or snaps shut, and a water-resistant jacket or raincoat. Layers are key as temperature swings—sometimes within the same day—are practically guaranteed. Most hotels can lend out umbrellas but pack a small one to be on the safe side.
March: 42 degrees F / 27 degrees F (6 degrees C / -3 degrees C)
April: 55 degrees F / 37 degrees F (13 degrees C / 3 degrees C)
May: 67 degrees F / 48 degrees F (19 degrees C / 9 degrees C)
Summer in Detroit
If you can swing a trip to Detroit during the summer you’ll never regret it. This is when the city comes alive. However, this season—particularly in July and August—is often accompanied by a heavy dose of humidity. Bring water with you wherever you go and stay hydrated, just in case. But just as every travel decision has a pro and con, the negative aspect here is that you’ll have to fight crowds during the summer in Detroit. With schools out of session, Detroit’s cultural institutions and attractions are a draw for both locals and visitors. But there is also much more to do than during the winter months. Book your hotel and flights early if you want to save money.
What to Pack: Thin, breathable cotton clothing to wear during the day with a long-sleeve shirt or cardigan at night in case it’s chilly (particularly in June). You’ll be walking a lot—as any Detroit resident does this time of year—so comfortable walking shoes are crucial.
June: 77 degrees F / 58 degrees F (25 degrees C / 15 degrees C)
July: 82 degrees F / 63 degrees F (28 degrees C / 17 degrees C)
August: 80 degrees F / 62 degrees F (27 degrees C / 17 degrees C)
Fall in Detroit
Every image you have of a Midwestern autumn—think stunning foliage and crisp, cool nights—is exactly what you’ll find in Detroit each fall. Temperatures can swing wildly, with September feeling like an Indian summer (and often warmer than June) and November sometimes welcoming the first snowfall.
During the fall months, keep apprised of football schedules for the Detroit Lions (Detroit’s NFL team) because during home games—usually on a Sunday, Monday, or Thursday—the city can jam up with fans. If you adore craft beer, Detroit hosts quite a few craft-beer festivals each fall, including the Detroit Fall Beer Festival, a testament to the prolific number of Michigan breweries.
November can appear bleak, especially after daylight-savings time kicks in, and is a less preferred option than September or October.
What to Pack: Similar to spring, layers are your friend. Ditch the open-toe shoes and resist the idea to go sock-less (unless it’s a warm September day). Wear a medium-weight jacket (it’s okay to save a down jacket for the winter if you’re layered underneath). A hat feels great on a cool September or October night but a scarf and mittens may not yet be necessary.
September: 73 degrees F / 55 degrees F (23 degrees C / 13 degrees C)
October: 60 degrees F / 40 degrees F (16 degrees C / 4 degrees C)
November: 46 degrees F / 33 degrees F (8 degrees C / 1 degree C)

Eclipse viewing at 30,000 feet: Delta to offer path-of-totality flight
Fliers can catch the April 8 total solar eclipse in-air from DL 1218, Austin-Detroit.
With all eyes to the sky during the year’s total solar eclipse, Delta people detail their meticulous preparation and devoted involvement ahead of the airline’s first-ever flights across the path of totality.
If you’ve ever wanted to experience a total solar eclipse from the sky, Delta has you covered this April.
The airline is offering a special flight from Austin to Detroit on April 8, 2024, specifically for umbraphiles to be able to spend as much time as possible directly within the path of totality.
Delta flight 1218 will be specifically operated on an A220-300, which will offer especially premium viewing due to the aircraft’s extra-large windows. The flight will depart from Austin at 12:15 p.m. CT and land in Detroit at 4:20 p.m. ET — timed to give those on board the best chance of safely viewing the solar eclipse at its peak.*
“This flight is the result of significant collaboration and exemplifies the close teamwork Delta is known for — from selecting an aircraft with larger windows to determining the exact departure time from Austin and the experiences at the gate and in the air,” said Eric Beck, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning. “Thanks to teams across the company, the idea of viewing a total eclipse from the air will become a reality for our customers.”
Warren Weston, one of Delta’s lead meteorologists, gives an inside look at every role Delta’s in-house meteorology team plays, from updating the Weather Information Tool and helping flight crews avoid turbulence to forecasting the weather both around major airports and up to 40,000 feet.
Even if you aren’t on this special flight, Delta travelers will also have prime eclipse-viewing opportunities on five additional routes on April 8, so don’t forget your protective viewing glasses if you’re on these flights:
- DL 5699, DTW-HPN, 2:59 pm EST departure, ERJ-175
- DL 924, LAX-DFW, 8:40 am PST departure, A320
- DL 2869, LAX-SAT, 9:00 am PST departure, A319
- DL 1001, SLC-SAT, 10:08 am MST departure, A220-300
- DL 1683, SLC-AUS, 9:55 am MST departure, A320
And for those who would rather catch the solar event from the ground, Delta flies to many destinations that are within the path of totality, including AUS, San Antonio (SAT), and Little Rock, Ark. (LIT).
“The April 8 eclipse is the last total eclipse we’ll see over North America until 2044,” said Warren Weston, Delta Air Lines Lead Meteorologist. “This eclipse will last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide.”
For booking information, visit delta.com .
*While Delta flight plans have been designed to maximize time within the path of totality, this is subject to change due to factors outside of Delta’s control such as weather and air traffic control that could impact timing and aircraft.
Delta is offering its largest Austin schedule ever – a 20% increase in seat capacity over July 2023, with service to Texas cities Midland-Odessa and McAllen with Austin as the gateway to Delta’s global network, while also introducing service to Nashville and more flights to Cincinnati and Raleigh-Durham.

Travel chaos as British Airways cancels dozens of flights from London Heathrow amid thundery showers
British Airways cancelled dozens of flights to and from Heathrow Airport on Sunday as wet weather continues to cause disruption.
Poor weather and air-traffic control restrictions have led the airline to reportedly not run more than 30 short haul flights connecting at the London terminal - its main base.
BA is the biggest carrier from Heathrow and said that while low visibility and lighting storms over the weekend have caused disruption, the vast majority of flights have taken off or landed as planned.
A spokesman added that more than 700 flights were operated on Saturday alone and that affected passengers have been rebooked.
Heathrow feels a greater strain than other London airports when disruption hits as the demand for the runways is such that a plane touches down or takes off every 45 seconds.
The Independent reported that among the grounded planes were two round-trips to and from Vienna as well as flights to Rome, Nice and Malaga.
Malaga, Nice and Rotterdam flights have also been cancelled from London City Airport.
BA additionally cancelled flights to Marrakech and Turin as well as Tampa and Las Vegas from London Gatwick.
British Airways said there was no comment to add.
The airline has recently suspended flights to Israel and announced that it will stop flying to Beijing come October .
