Xian Fo Temple , also know as the 500 Arhats temple, is right up there as one of the best Taichung day trips! This beautiful Buddhist Temple is located in Nantou County, roughly 40 minutes drive from Taichung City.

What really makes this temple so incredible is that it sits amid a whimsical forest dotted with yellow lanterns. Some of the many amazing sights to see here include cute temples, a gigantic bell, and a library housing important Buddhist scriptures. However, the shining star here is undoubtedly the massive square filled with 500 stone statues of deities surrounding a huge buddha seated on a lotus flower in its center.

Temple of Heaven (金陵山天壇)

copper temple is the perfect day trip from taichung

Located in a huge religious park in Jinling Mountain, Baiyang Holy Temple is a relaxing pitstop and just one of the many hidden gems in Wufeng District. While there are several impressive sites to visit in the park, it is the Temple of Heaven that will truly leave you breathless.

With a height of 54 meters, this beautiful dome-shaped temple surpasses the Beijing Temple of Heaven, making it the tallest of its kind globally. Besides its size, what truly makes it such a masterwork is that it is almost entirely constructed out of copper!

Whether you’re admiring the temple from the outside or getting a closer look at the massive hall from within – every single little detail here (all done by hand) is impressive. From the elaborate carvings on the doors and pillars to the decorative paintwork on the ceiling and outer walls to the life-like statues of religious figures, it’s easy to see why this temple took more than 20 years to complete.

Temple of Heaven is open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Since it’s off the main tourist track, you’re almost guaranteed to have it all to yourself!

How to get there:  Baiyang Holy Temple is just 40 minutes drive from Taichung City. However, the easiest way to access the area is by hiring a private driver for the day.

Guangfu New Village (光復新村)

quirky shops at gaungfu new village

Located mere steps from the 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan (921地震教育園區), you’ll find one of the coolest places to go in Taichung!

Guangfu New Village, in Wufeng District, is a hip artists village with quite an interesting past. Like Rainbow Village, Guangfu Village is a former military dependents village built by the KMT for military personnel and their families who served in the civil war in Mainland China. While the old brick remnants and unique architecture provide a fascinating glimpse into the past, today, the village is more known as a creative hub.

The village is home to some impressive galleries, loads of quirky souvenir stores, and mind-blowing food! Although the main tourist area is made up of two streets, one can easily spend hours here popping into the shops, taking photos of all the colorful houses, or chilling at its cool cafes. Don’t miss the savory donuts at Yuer Bakery (魚兒賣甜點) – they are delish! Check out their  IG page  here.

Getting to Guangfu Village:  Catch bus 50 towards the 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan at Taichung Station. Get off at Guangfu New Village Traffic Circle. Buses come every 20 minutes and cost  NT$32 .

Address:  413, Taichung City, Wufeng District, 光復新村

Gaomei Wetlands (高美濕地)

Gaomei wetlands is a popular day trip from taichung during golden hour

Gaomei Wetlands is a popular day trip from Taichung and a firm favorite among sunset chasers.

Situated roughly 50 minutes drive from Taichung, in Qingshui District, this sprawling ecological wonderland is a great place to go cycling, do bird watching, or simply watch the sun melt away over the horizon.

For the best experience, be sure to come at least one hour before sunset. That way you’ll have enough time to grab a spot on the Gaomei Walkway – an extensive wooden walkway that is built over the marshes. There are loads of vendors nearby, too, where you can buy local snacks to enjoy while you watch the golden hour.

Getting to Gaomei Wetlands:  Take bus 309 from Taichung Station and get off at No. 18 Wind Turbine. The ride takes just over one hour and costs  NT$73 . Alternatively, join this Gaomei Wetlands day tour that also stops at Rainbow Village and Fengjia Night Market.

Lavender Cottage (薰衣草森林)

lavender fields taichung

Lavender Cottage is a whimsical mountainside retreat just over an hour’s drive from Taichung.

Like Xinshe Castle, Lavender Cottage is located in Xinshe District. It’s a laid-back place to visit near Taichung, especially if you want to enjoy some fresh air.

What really sets this recreational area apart from others is that it’s home to sprawling lavender fields and beautiful trails offering plenty of photo ops and relaxing strolls. There’s also a nice restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat and a cute gift shop selling all kinds of weird and wonderful lavender products. Don’t miss the lavender ice cream because it’s lip-smacking delicious!

Getting to Lavender Cottage:  The easiest way to get to the lavender forest is to join this full-day tour from Taichung . Alternatively, grab your Lavender Cottage entrance tickets here in advance and hire a driver or rent a car for the day.

Address:  No. 20號, Zhongxing Street, Xinshe District, Taichung City, 426

Wufeng Lin Family Mansion & Garden (霧峰林家宮保第園區)

Wufeng Lin family mansion theater courtyard

Another Taichung tourist spot worth visiting is the Wufeng Lin Family Mansion. The large mansion features ornate architecture, a beautiful garden, a large open-air court, and some impressive treasures within its walls.

The Wufeng Lin Mansion has a rich history dating back more than 200 years. While the 921 earthquake destroyed some parts of the complex, it remains the most well-preserved historical landmark in Wufeng District to this day. And more noteworthy, one of the best examples of traditional Taiwanese architecture.

The house is divided into three parts: Upper House, Lower House, and Lai Garden, each beautiful in its own right. If you’d like to learn a little more about the Lin Family, several guided tours are offered onsite throughout the day. Group tours are only in Chinese, so don’t forget to grab the free headphones devices to listen to the tour in English. Alternatively, book a private tour with an English-speaking guide (at least a few days in advance) on their  website .

The mansion is open from 9 am to 5 pm daily, and entrance tickets cost  NT$250 per person .

Getting there:  Take bus 201 to Wufeng or bus 108 to Wufeng Farmers Association. Both buses depart from Taichung station, taking roughly 45 minutes.

Address: No. 26, Minsheng Road, Wufeng District, Taichung City, 413

Guguan Hot Springs (谷關風景特定區)

Taiwan has no shortage of excellent hot springs, and Guguan in Heping District is one of the best.

Tucked away amid soaring mountaintops of Baxianshan, along the Dajia River, Gugaun Hot Springs is a great place to spend some time in nature. During spring, it’s a cool spot for cherry blossoms viewing , while autumn marks the arrival of fiery red maple leaves.

Besides soaking in the steamy waters that reach up to 48 degrees Celcius, there are loads of scenic spots around Gugaun. Some of the most noteworthy attractions include hiking the lush forest trails and bamboo groves of Baxianshan National Forest Recreation Area (八仙山國家森林遊樂區), visiting the Cultural Museum of Hot Springs, or enjoying a walkabout on the Shaolai and Guguan suspension bridges. Both Bali Nature Spa Hot Spring Hotel and Luquan Hotspring offer amazing spa facilities perfect for a pamper session.

Gugaun is about 1.5 hours drive from Taichung and easily accessed by bus. Alternatively, this day tour from Taichung, also stops by Dungshi Hakka Cultural Park.

How to get to Guguan Hot Springs:  Take bus 850, calling every hour at Taichung Station. Get off at the Long Paradise stop.

Address:  No. 172, Zhongbu Cross-island highway, Heping District, Taichung City, 424

Rollin Farm (若茵農場)

day trip to taichung

Rollin Farm is a beautiful retreat hidden along the slopes of Snow Mountain in Heping District, roughly 1.5 hours drive from Taichung City. Located 1200 meters above sea level, amid a thick bamboo forest, it’s one of Taichung’s best-kept secrets, offering the most incredible views imaginable.

While Rolling Farm is actually a B&B ( check rates here ), there is a lovely little cafe with a huge deck offering jaw-dropping views over the Taichung basin. The quirky restaurant has a good selection of drinks and food, making it a great place to grab a cuppa or a bite to eat while enjoying the laidback vibes. If your Taichung day trip itinerary is flexible, it’s worth sticking around until sunset to spot the sea of clouds that often frequent these parts of Taiwan.

Since Rollin Farm is just a short drive from Daxueshan National Forest Recreation Area (大雪山國家森林遊樂區), it’s also easy to combine the two on one trip. Daxueshan is a former logging area filled with dense forests, sacred trees, abundant birdlife, and great hiking opportunities.

Getting to Rollin Farm:  Since Rollin Farm is quite a hidden gem, the only way to access the area is by car.

Address: No. 1, Xueshan Road, Heping District, Taichung City, 424

Dakeng Scenic Area (大坑風景區)

Dakeng Scenic Area is a firm favorite among hikers and a cool Taichung day trip just 30 minutes drive away from the city center.

There are ten trails ranging from beginner-friendly hikes to more difficult treks, all offering excellent scenery and a great day outdoors. Trails 6-10 are among the most popular and also the easiest to complete. Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over the mountains and lush forests filled with varied orchards and vegetation. If you’re looking for a challenge, tackle trails one to five where you’re guaranteed to break a sweat!

While Dakeng is a popular hiking spot just outside Taichung, it has also become quite an Instagram hotspot thanks to its rustic wooden log trails. For this reason, it’s best to come early to beat the heat and crowds that flock here on weekends and holidays.

Getting there:  You can take bus 1, 15, 16, 20, 21, 31, 51, 66, 68, 85, 270, 271, or 276 to access the easier trails. Get off at Taipower Dongshan Service (台電東山所) in Dongshan Road.

Address:  Lane 383, Section 1, Dongshan Road, Beitun District, Taichung City, 406

Shuanglong Rainbow Bridge (雙龍七彩吊橋)

rainbow bridge Nantou

Another neat place to visit near Taichung is the newly renovated Rainbow Bridge. Located in Xinyi Township, Nantou County, Rainbow Bridge is definitely one of the hardest places to reach on this Taichung day trip list. But the effort will be worth it!

To get to the base of the bridge, you need to walk down a long stairway. Once you get to the rainbow-colored bridge, you’ll be greeted with sweeping views over a deep verdant valley and the incredible Double Dragon Waterfall (雙龍瀑布) in the distance. Besides being an Instagram hotspot, what really sets this bridge a notch above others is its sheer size! At 342 meters long and 110 meters deep, it is the longest and deepest of its kind in Taiwan.

Besides crossing the bridge, make sure to follow the trail to the Double Dragon Waterfall – a 100m tall waterfall and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Taiwan . The entire loop trail is 3.7km long.

Since only 250 people are allowed on the bridge each day, it’s best to make a reservation online to guarantee a spot. To access the bridge, you need to pay a small fee of NT$100, which also includes a shuttle bus ride. Note that the shuttle bus only goes as far as the trailhead, and from there, it’s a steep walk uphill for 500m. You should also know that the bridge is closed every Wednesday , and despite Google showing the opening hours as 8 am to 5 pm, you actually can’t enter the area after 4:20 pm.

Getting to Rainbow Bridge:  The fastest way to reach this tourist destination from Taichung is by car, but if you’re planning to  stay in Sun Moon Lake  for a few days, you could catch a bus from there too (more than one transfer is needed, though).

Address:  No. 556, Guangfu Ln., Xinyi Township, Nantou County 556, Taiwan

Zhongshe Flower Market (中社觀光花市花海)

zhongshe flower fields near taichung

No Taichung day tour list would be complete without a visit to the beautiful Zhongshe Tourist Flower Market (also spelled Chungshe).

Roughly 45 minutes drive from the city center, this sprawling 6-hectare area is one of the best examples of flower fields in Taiwan. Renowned for its varied, colorful flowers that bloom right throughout the year, Zhongshe is a great place to enjoy a walkabout. The best part? The fields are dotted with tons of props, from picture frames to a wooden piano and even a Dutch-style windmill – all creating a picture-perfect backdrop.

Since Zhongsge is quite a popular place to visit during weekends, come early to skip the crowds. If your Taiwan itinerary happens to fall from January through March, you’re in for a real treat! Because it’s also the only place in Taiwan where you can see thousands of colorful tulips in full bloom. The entrance fee is NT$120 (April to December) and NT$150 (January to March).

Getting to Zhongshe Flower Market:  Catch a northbound train to Tai’an Station (泰安火車站) at Taichung Station. From there, grab a taxi or walk the remaining 1.8km to the flower farm. Alternatively, book this fun day tour that also includes a few other hot spots around the city.

Address:  No. 333, Section 5, Sanfeng Road, Houli District, Taichung City, 421

Xinshe Castle (新社莊園古堡)

Xinshe Castle is yet another popular tourist destination just on the outskirts of Taichung.

Nestled amid the mountains of Xinshe Township, this European-style castle has a lot going for it! Besides the cool architecture that will transcend you to a fairy-tale setting, the beautiful gardens complete with koi-filled ponds and the massive human-made waterfall are just as impressive. After wandering along the various walkways, grab a bite at one of the onsite restaurants, go wine tasting or shop for some souvenirs.

Xinshe Castle is open from 9 am to 6 pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 6 pm on weekends. The entrance fee is NT$250, of which NT$100 can be used at both the Hexagon or Wooden House Restaurants.

Getting to Xinshe Castle  involves taking a train and bus. First, take the TRA to Fengyuan Station (豐原車站). From there, catch bus 91 and get off at the Xinwu Village (新五村) stop.

Address:  No. 23, Xiezhong Street, Xinshe District, Taichung City, 426

Xitou Monster Village (溪頭妖怪村)

xitou forest trails is a fun day trip from taichung

Xitou Monster Village is a quirky Japanese-themed village roughly 1.5 hours drive from Taichung.

Famous for its tasty monster-themed food, cool monster statues, red torii gate, and dozens of red lanterns, Xitou is a fun place to walk around, take photos or hunt for monster sculptures. Since the village is quite small, you can easily see it all in less than an hour or two.

With that said, though, there’s more to Xitou than its quirky village. In particular, the Xitou Nature Education Park. Here you can wander along misty forest trails both on the ground and on treetop walkways. If you don’t have time to visit the mystical forests of Alishan , then this nearby park is a great alternative. Just a heads up, it’s quite popular among tour groups and school outings! So, if you don’t like crowds, this might not be your thing.

Further afield, Shanlinxi Forest Ecological Resort (杉林溪森林生態渡假園區) is another beautiful area. It has a fun hike to the gorgeous Songlong Rock WaterFall (松瀧岩瀑布). Hop on bus 6277 from Xitou Nature Education Center and ride one stop to Sun Link Sea. Alternatively, join the tour below to see all of the area’s best bits!

Getting to Xitou Monster Village:  The easiest way to visit Xitou is on an organized Xitou Monster Village tour from Taichung. Alternatively, you can hop on the  Xitou Shuttle bus . The shuttle also offers a special tourist pass that can save you a few bucks!

Address:  No.2-3, Xingchan Rd., Lugu Township, Nantou County 558

Sun-Link-Sea Forest Recreation Area (杉林溪森林生態渡假園區)

sun link sea forest

Located less than 2 hours drive from Taichung, Sun Link Sea is another beautiful forest resort in Nantou County. Boasting beautiful waterfalls, scenic hiking trails, and misty forests lined with towering trees and lush plant life Sun Link Sea is one of the best day trips from Taichung.

With more than 40 hectares to explore, Sun Link Sea is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. The most popular sight to see here is Songlong Rock Waterfall – a stunning waterfall that sits right beside a massive cliff. A well-paved path is etched out along the cave’s interior and offers panoramic views over the waterfall and lush valley surrounding it. Several trails lead you deeper into the forest from here, where you can see a 4000-year-old cypress tree and the famous Tian-ti Yen – the highest point in the park sitting at an elevation of 1800m.

Another highlight not to miss in Sun Link Sea is the sprawling Herb and Flower Center. It houses a wide variety of medicinal plants and more than 30 flower species, such as hydrangea, Indian pipes, and peonies.

Sun Link Sea has tons of trails, and you could easily spend a few days here to do them all. For those not keen on walking long distances, the park also has a shuttle service at regular intervals. It stop at several of the area’s most iconic attractions.

Getting there:   Join this guided tour  for the easier route. Alternatively, Yuanlin Bus 6871 or Taiwan Tourist Bus  6883B can also get you there. The bus ride takes about 3 hours.

Before you start your Taichung day tour

Before you start your Taichung city tour, take a look at my post on all my best tips for travelling to Taiwan . I included a lot of information, including getting a Taiwan tourist SIM card and more.

And check out my solo travel guide to Taichung and learn about transportation, logistics and other places to visit in Taichung.

Here are a few more additional tips that you might find helpful during your Taichung day tour:

  • For my one-day Taichung itinerary, I included directions for taking public transportation between each tourist spot. It would be useful to buy an EasyCard or iPass for all the bus rides. As of 2021, the basic fare for a bus ride is NT$20 .
  • And if you don’t want to take the bus, Uber is an excellent and cheap option. Download the Uber app and set up the app before you use the app. And if you are setting it up in Taiwan, you will need a local phone number.
  • Although it isn’t necessary to stay overnight in Taichung, you can spend more time at Feng Chia Night Market if you stay for the night.

Where to stay in Taichung for one night

My Taichung 1 day itinerary is packed with many attractions and activities. It is best to stay in Taichung for the night so you can get proper rest and so you can keep on going for the rest of your trip in Taiwan.

My favourite boutique hostel is Norden Ruder Hostel Taichung (check rate at Agoda ). And my favourite boutique hotel is SOF Hotel (check rate at Agoda ). They are both close to Taichung Railway Station.

Alternatively, I have other suggestions on where to stay in Taichung in this post .

Taichung itinerary: see the best Taichung attractions 1 day

1. have breakfast at the most popular breakfast spot in the city, taichung second market.

Your Taichung 1 day tour must start with a hearty breakfast.  Taichung Second Market ( 台中第二市場店 ) is famous for its local food, especially traditional breakfast food. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Many locals (and travellers) go to the market bright and early to get radish cake with a fried egg in a tangy sauce from 王家菜頭粿糯米腸 . The food stall is on the south side of the market. You know the food is good when there is always a long queue!

Others will get lurou fan  ( 魯肉飯 ), which is a braised minced pork cooked in a soy sauce with five spices and served over white rice. It is a classic Taiwanese dish!

And to top it off, grab an iced black tea from the popular tea shop, Lai’s Tea Shop ( 老賴茶棧 ) to complete your meal.

How to get to Taichung Second Market: If you are starting your day from Taichung Railway Station , Taichung Second Market is in walkable distance. From the station, walk north on Section 1, Taiwan Boulevard, for 13 minutes . The market is on the left.

山河魯肉飯

2. Get zen at Taichung Confucius Temple

The Taichung Confucius Temple ( 台中孔廟 ) was built in a classic architectural style of the Song Dynasty. And the temple complex resembles the original Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong, which is the birthplace of Confucius in China.

The temple premise is serene and not very crowded (most of the time). Take a walk through the front gate and explore all the covered corridors, shrines and courtyards. And pay attention to the colourful decorated details in the roof, beams, and columns.

How to get to Taichung Confucius Temple: From Taichung Second Market, take a local bus (#132, 701, 26, 201, 303, 307 and many more options) to Taichung Confucius Temple. The bus ride is about 14 minutes and starts from NT$20 (use your EasyCard or iPass).

Enjoy the intricate architectural details at Taichung Confucius Temple.

3. See the giant golden Buddha at Paochueh Temple

Paochueh Temple ( 寶覺禪寺 ) was built to commemorate all the fallen Japan soldiers during World War II. Many Japanese tourists visit the temple to pay their respects as the deceased were gathered into the columbaria.

When you enter the temple premise, there is the original main temple built in classic Japanese-style and is surrounded by concrete walls. But most people visit the temple because they want to see the 7-storey tall giant golden laughing Buddha.

How to get to Paochueh Temple: From Taichung Confucius Temple, walk 10 minutes towards Paochueh Temple. Or you can take a local bus (#65 or 701) for 2 stops .

4. Buy food souvenirs at Miyahara

Miyahara ( 宮原眼科 )  was an ophthalmology clinic during the Japanese Colonial Era. Today, it is a retail store selling chocolate, cookies and traditional Taiwanese treats like pineapple cake and sun cake. Miyahara is the perfect place to buy all your food souvenirs to bring back home for your friends and family.

Besides all the goodies at Miyahara, many visitors visit Miyahara because of the Harry Potter-esque interior . The elaborate details of the staircase, bookshelves and display cases are all one-of-a-kind and very detailed.

If you are staying overnight in Taichung, either at one of the accommodations I suggested above or another place in Central District, you can drop off your Miyahara purchases before continuing the rest of your Taichung city tour.

How to get to Miyahara: From Paochueh Temple, take local bus #201 , and it will take you to a bus stop near Taichung Old Station . Miyahara is just on the same block.

5. Have lunch and bubble tea at bubble tea’s birthplace, Chun Shui Tang

There are thousands of bubble tea shops all over Taichung, but you probably don’t want to miss the opportunity to have the “original” bubble tea at Chun Shui Tang (春水堂) .

Claiming to be the birthplace of bubble tea, Chun Shui Tang serves delicious bubble tea and traditional Taiwanese food.

You must try a classic Pearl Milk Tea . It was first created in 1987. You might fall in love with the creamy milk tea and the chewy tapioca balls. Or if you prefer, order the signature Black Tea as it was the original creation in 1983.

As for food, there are many delicious options, including the classic dry noodles with minced pork sauce and the fried spare ribs noodle soup . Both are equally delicious, especially when you pair it with a frothy bubble tea!

How to get to Chun Shui Tang: From Miyahara, take local bus #1 or 21 to Chun Shui Tang. The entire journey, including the walk to the bus stop, will take about 13 minutes . Or walk 14 minutes.

6. Indulge in contemporary art at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts

If you are a fan of modern and contemporary art , then you cannot miss the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (國立台灣美術館) . The museum has different exhibits by Taiwanese artists with a focus on modern art. They change their displays from time to time. So even if you have been there before, you should visit the museum again to see what new exhibits they have. Admission is free.

And don’t leave the museum without walking around the garden to see the outdoor exhibits.

How to get to the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts: From Chun Shui Tang, walk to the nearby bus stop and take a local bus (#71, 75 or 51) to the museum.

Modern exterior complements the contemporary exhibits at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

7. Grab a coffee and cake at Shen Ji New Village

Shen Ji New Village (審計新村) was once a dormitory built by the Taiwan Provincial Government. Since the government restructured, the dormitory was left unused for many years.

Today, the area is transformed into a new cultural creative marketplace for young entrepreneurs . There are boutique stores, cute coffee shops and many more.

How to get to Shen Ji New Village: It is only a 6-minute walk away from the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. It is an easy and leisurely walk, especially if you walk through the Calligraphy Greenway .

Outdoor market at Shen Ji New Village

8. Take many Instagram photos at Rainbow Village

When a residential area in Taichung’s Nantun District was purchased by a developer, the plan was to tear down all the old run-down homes and built new modern buildings. Most residents took compensation or new housing, but Huang Yung-fu stayed and decided to paint the remaining 11 houses in the area.

Today, the area is known as the whimsical Rainbow Village ( 彩虹眷村 )  where it is a designated cultural area.  The Rainbow Village is a must-see in Taichung tourist attraction! And if your timing is right, you might even get to meet Mr. Huang, who is affectionately known as Rainbow Grandpa .

How to get to Rainbow Village: Local bus #56 and #72 will take you directly from Shen Ji New Village to Rainbow Village. The bus ride takes about 43 minutes .

Best things to do in Taichung: Rainbow Village

9. Visit the futuristic National Taichung Theatre

While the primary purpose of the National Taichung Theatre (台中國家歌劇院) is to promote art, incubate creative ideas, and host various live performances, many people visit the theatre to see the futuristic modern architecture .

While you are there, walk through the entire theatre and see all the exciting spaces. The performance stages are on the second through the fourth floor, a restaurant on the fifth, and a cafe, shop and “art corner” are all on the main floor. And don’t forget to take the elevator to the Sky Garden on the rooftop (see the main photo). It is an excellent spot to see the neighbourhood from above.

How to get to National Taichung Theatre From Rainbow Village, take a local bus #358 to Lingdong High School . Then walk to the bus stop to catch bus #199 . If you don’t want to take multiple buses, take an Uber for 20 minutes . It costs between NT$190-240 .

See the modern architecture at the National Taichung Theatre.

10. Cap off your night by eating street food at Feng Chia Night Market

And to finish off your Taichung day tour, visit Feng Chia Night Market ( 逢甲夜市 ) , the biggest and one of the best night markets in Taichung .

Located at the north end of the city in Xitun District , the market has over 30,000 people visiting during the weekend. And it is popular with locals as the night market is located right by a university.

Besides the typical traditional Taiwanese food you can find at any night market in Taiwan, there are a few unique food stalls at Feng Chia Night Market.

I found a popular food stall selling Taiwanese hot dogs where the bun is made with sticky rice and the toppings include garlic and pickled vegetable. Another food vendor sells cake/cookie that looks like little chickens. The original is an egg waffle, but Taiwanese food vendors have re-invented the original food to something so whimsical.

How to get to Feng Chia Night Market From the National Taichung Theatre, take local a bus (#5, 199, 29, 54, or many more options) towards Xitun District and disembark Feng Chia University on Fuxing Road . Feng Chia Night Market is just east of the main road.

How to See the Best of Taichung: a 1 or 2-Day Taichung Itinerary

In this Taichung travel guide, I’ve included my suggested 1-day Taichung itinerary and 2-day Taichung itinerary, with travel tips based on my own personal experience.

I’ve also added several more suggestions for day trips and alternative Taichung attractions that are not included in either of the two itineraries.

All of the things to do in Taichung included in the itineraries are within walking distance of the city center, except for Rainbow Village. I included it in the 1-day itinerary anyway because, for me, it’s a must-see.

The story behind this place is so inspirational, and it was one of my top favorite experiences of my whole Taiwan trip. But if after reading my article about Rainbow Village you’re still not convinced, you could swap it out for the Qianyue Building.

This would save you time, and you might be able to squeeze in a couple more of the Taichung attractions from the 2-day itinerary. Though to be honest, I really think Taichung deserves at least two full days, especially if you are interested in arts and culture.

If you wanted to cover all the Taichung attractions listed in the Alternative Things to Do in Taichung section, it would take you about a week.

But some of them are sure to appeal to you more than others, so feel free to pick and choose according to your tastes. Remember, this is a Taichung DIY itinerary, so you can use it however you like!

One Day Taichung Itinerary

Even if you only have one day in Taichung, you’ll still be able to see a lot. This Taichung one day itinerary will give you a good taste of what this city has to offer.

Rainbow Village

Open daily 8 am to 6 pm.

Rainbow Village Taiwan

How did this place become so colorful?

Start out early to beat the crowds at Rainbow Village, which is deservedly one of Taichung’s most popular attractions. This military dependents’ village was destined for demolition, until the last remaining resident started painting the walls in bright, vibrant colors.

Now known as Rainbow Grandpa, he started this project when he was in his late eighties, and he’s still going strong at 96! Local university students successfully petitioned the government to save the village, and it now attracts visitors from around the world.

To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have visited Taichung at all if it hadn’t been for Rainbow Village. It turns out, there’s plenty to see in this often overlooked city, so I’m glad I added it to my Taiwan itinerary.

Rainbow Village is still my favorite of all, though, mostly because of the inspiring story behind it.

CMP Block Museum of Arts

Temporarily closed for renovations.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Peyton Chiang (@peytonchiang) on Jan 16, 2014 at 3:53am PST

What started out as an outdoor museum of contemporary art is currently being transformed into a brick and mortar art gallery.

It’s currently closed while the construction works are underway, but check their Facebook page for the latest developments. If it has reopened by the time you read this, it would definitely be worth checking out.

I really hope the exhibit with the half-buried cars in the grassy field is still there when it reopens. What I’ve seen of it in photos looks amazing!

Calligraphy Greenway

Open daily 24 hours.

Calligraphy Greenway Taichung

This pleasant, statue-lined walk will take you from one museum to the next.

This elongated park makes for a pleasant walk between the CMP Block Museum of Arts and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (described below). You’ll pass by a number of statues along the way, including a large one of Arthas Menethil from World of Warcraft.

The calligraphy stele that give the park its name are located on the southern end, near the fine arts museum. While the greenway alone is probably not worth a special trip to this side of town, it’s a nice place for a stroll if you’re planning to visit any of the nearby museums.

There’s also the National Museum of Natural Science on the far northern end. It’s not included in this itinerary, but you may want to add it if you’re traveling with kids, or if you’re into dinosaurs.

National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts

Open 10 am to 6 pm, closed Mondays.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 映秀💕 (@xiuuuu613) on Dec 18, 2016 at 12:04am PST

Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to go inside this museum because the day I was in the area was a Monday, the museum’s weekly closure day. I’m including it in this itinerary, though, because a friend of mine who lives in Taichung highly recommends it.

Entrance is free, and the exhibit on printmaking looks especially interesting. The museum is accessible to the visually impaired and is also kid-friendly, with cool places to play and DIY workshops

You could also chop two carrots with one knife by visiting the branch of the Chun Shui Tang café inside the museum, famous for inventing bubble tea. The original location of Chung Shui Tang is included on day two in the 2-day version of this itinerary.

Lunch at Vegan Daily

Open 7 am to 3 pm, closed Wednesday to Friday.

Vegan Daily Taichung

The rice-based dishes at Vegan Daily are good, but be sure to order the popcorn chicken as a starter.

Taichung may not have quite as many vegan restaurants as Taipei , but it still has more than enough to choose froj.

This cute little vegan café serves sandwiches as well as some rice-based dishes. The real highlight for me, though, was their vegan popcorn chicken, a popular Taiwanese snack.

I’m not sure how they do it, but the texture is very realistic! Prices are quite reasonable here. There’s no English menu, but the staff can translate for you.

Painted Animation Lane

Painted Animation Lane Taichung

How many of these anime characters can you name?

Street art and anime fans will enjoy this small back alley filled with murals featuring lots of famous cartoon characters. It reminded me of Batman’s Alley, my favorite attraction in São Paulo, Brazil , but on a smaller scale.

Most of the characters are from Japanese anime, which I'm not very familiar with. I did recognize a few characters from Western cartoons, though, including Minions, Angry Birds and Warner Brothers. For Ghibli Studio fans, there’s also a Totoro bus stop here.

There were a few people around taking selfies at Painted Animation Lane, but it was not as crowded as Rainbow Village.

Liuchuan Riverside Walk

Open 6 am to 10 pm Monday to Friday, 6 am to midnight Saturday and Sunday.

Liuchuan Riverside Walk

This peaceful canal-side walkway will be even better when it's completed.

Even though the Chinese name Liuchuan (柳川) means “willow river”, this seems more like a man-made canal than an actual river.

Still, it’s a very pleasant place for a stroll, and once it’s completed it will be a great way to get between Painted Animation Lane and the Taichung Second Market. When I visited, though, the areas near Painted Animation Lane were still under construction.

The water channel meanders right through the heart of the city, with walking paths on either side and occasional stepping stones so you can cross from one side to the other.

Dinner or Tea at Veganday Café

Open 11:30 am to 4 pm and 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, closed Monday to Wednesday.

VeganDay Café - vegan restaurant in Taichung

Come for dinner, but stay for the cake!

I loved the atmosphere of this café, with its old stone walls and wooden bar. The menu is definitely not Taiwanese, but it’s fun for a change of pace if you’re craving different flavors. Think pasta, moussaka and shepherd’s pie.

Main dishes cost about NT$ 250 each, so it’s a bit pricier than other veg restaurants but worth the splurge. And while the savory dishes are good, for me the real highlight is the desserts. Their chocolate and pumpkin mousse cake is awesome!

I would love to go back for their vegan afternoon tea. Note that on Google Maps this place is called Bluesomeone’s Vegan Café.

Two Day Taichung Itinerary

For the two-day version of this itinerary, the first day is the same one-day itinerary set out above. The second day focuses on sights in the center of town, and all the distances are easily walkable.

Day 2 Taichung Itinerary

Qianyue building (千越大楼).

Street art Qianyue Building Taichung

Inside this abandoned buildings are some really cool art installations.

Like Rainbow Village, this place also offers some great open-air art for your viewing pleasure, but it’s much rougher around the edges. Once a popular entertainment and residential building in the 1970s, the Qianyue building now lies abandoned.

Or almost abandoned, as it’s now been taken over by a street artist collective called Escape PLAN-X Taiwan Graffiti Crew (EPX). This is an easy introduction to urbex for anyone who’s curious about exploring abandoned buildings.

There’s no gate or fence to jump; it’s located right in the city center and no one will stop you from walking up the stairs from the street. Apparently one of the elevators even works, though I certainly wouldn't try it. Most of the art is on the fifth and sixth floors, and also up on the roof.

The UFO-type round thing on the roof used to be a rotating restaurant. Its top-level floor has collapsed, so I wouldn't go up there for safety reasons, but everywhere else seemed pretty safe.

It seems like EPX has big plans for this place, so it will be exciting to see what it becomes. I’ve read conflicting information about visitors being charged a “maintenance fee” of NT$ 100. Some reports say that people asking for money on the first floor are actually not part of EPX, and you shouldn’t pay them.

No one asked us for money, but I did see a donation box on the fifth floor. If in doubt, offer to leave your donation there. For more photos of the art and the building, check out this article on Kathmandu and Beyond .

Taichung Cultural Heritage Park

Taichung Cultural Heritage Park

Old sake distillery tanks repurposed as art.

It seems like every city in Taiwan has at least one creative art park , but some of them are filled mostly with shops where you can buy art and artsy little trinkets. This one, however, is much less commercial than others I’ve been to.

Once a Japanese sake distillery, this large space has been converted into exhibition rooms for temporary art exhibits. When I visited, there was an interesting exhibit about one of Taiwan's indigenous tribes and another one about underwater cultural heritage.

The only shop I saw was inside what appeared to be the old bottling room. Wine and local liqueurs are now sold here. My favorite part of all, though, was the distillery tanks outside that have been turned into canvases for street art.

Natural Way Six Arts Cultural Center

Open daily 9:30 am to 6 pm, closes early at 5 pm on Mondays.

Japanese colonial architecture in Taichung

One of a few examples of Japanese colonial architecture in Taichung

Another repurposed historical building from the Japanese colonial era, this one used to be a Japanese martial arts compound where people practiced kendo and judo. Later, it was used as a dormitory for prison workers at a prison that has since shut down.

It’s now the only remaining example of Japanese Meiji-era Wude Dojo architecture in Taichung. Periodic cultural events are held here, such as calligraphy and archery workshops.

One one side of the courtyard is a small café, and on the other a traditional Japanese-style teahouse where you sit on cushions on the floor. The complex is pretty small, but it’s quiet and peaceful and worth a visit.

Chun Shui Tang

Open daily 8 am to 10 pm.

Chun Shui Tang bubble tea café

The birthplace of the famous Taiwanese bubble tea

Bubble tea aficionados will probably want to make a pilgrimage to Chun Shui Tang, the place where the boba craze began. They do serve milk bubble tea made with soy milk, but only as part of their seasonal winter menu.

At other times of the year, dairy-free bubble tea options include pearl black tea and pearl jasmine tea. You’ll need to tell the server how much ice you want, and how much sugar.

I had read that the “regular sugar” option was super sweet, so I went with a 50% sugar pearl jasmine tea. To be honest, I found it somewhat bitter and wished I had ordered regular. This place is apparently very popular with tourists, but it wasn’t too crowded when I was there.

Lunch at Taichung Second Market OR 96 Vegetarian (九六素食)

Taichung Second Market: Open 7 am to 8 pm, closed Mondays.

A-Hua vegetarian food stall inside the market: Open 6:00 am to 1:30 pm Monday to Friday, 6 am to 1:30 pm Sunday.

96 Vegetarian: Open daily 7:30 am to 7:30 pm.

Taichung Second Market

Come here for the quintessential Taiwan day market experience.

Taiwan is famous for its night markets, but there are also markets like this one that are open during the daytime. Taichung Second Market is an indoor market with stalls selling all kinds of things, including produce, clothes and ready-to-eat food.

Walking through its narrow corridors is a fun way to experience a slice of daily life in Taiwan. Unfortunately, the meat and fish stalls are mixed in with the rest, so it’s hard to avoid the unpleasant sight of dismembered bodies.

There is a vegetarian food stall here, though, called A-Hua, that’s open for breakfast and lunch.

Alternatively, head back towards the station for lunch at 96 Vegetarian (九六素食 in Chinese). This is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Taichung and has been around for 53 years.

It’s a family-run place owned by four generations of vegetarians. Both buffet and à la carte Taiwanese dishes are available. The owner is very friendly and will probably ask to take a selfie with you (which he will post on Facebook).

Dessert at Miyahara Ice Cream OR The Fourth Credit Union

Miyahara: Open daily 10 am to 10 pm.

Fourth Credit Union: Open daily 10 am to 9 pm.

Fourth Credit Union ice cream shop Taichung

Old bank teller windows at Fourth Credit Union

Whether you eat lunch in the market or at 96 Vegetarian, be sure to save room for dessert. Most Taichung itineraries will tell you that you must have ice cream at the famous Miyahara Ice Cream Shop.

But while it’s worth taking a peek inside at the beautiful building, avoid the huge queues by walking three minutes down the street to Fourth Credit Union, which serves exactly the same ice cream.

The Miyahara Ice Cream Shop used to be an ophthalmologist office run by a Japanese man named Miyahara.

Its walls are lined with old drawers and bookshelves, and it’s often been likened to a Harry Potter set. While not as Harry Potteresque as the House of Mina Lima in London or the Lello Bookstore in Porto , it’s still impressive.

The inside is not a sweet option, with a few vegan options like peanut brittle flavored with black sesame or seaweed. But most people come for the ice cream. For that there’s no seating, just a takeaway window outside.

And the queues can be enormous, even at 9:30 am, half an hour before they open. But what most people seem not to know is that the same company runs a sit-down ice cream shop just down the street that serves the very same ice cream. And the wait is much shorter!

Another renovated historical building, Fourth Credit Union was originally, of course, a credit union. Go upstairs to find more seating, including a bar made out of what used to be the bank teller windows.

Unfortunately none of the chocolate flavors are vegan, but according to the staff the following fruit flavors are: Irwin mango, passion fruit, sugar cane, kumquat lime and kyoho grape. Three other flavors are dairy-free but contain honey.

Taichung Park

Sun Moon Lake inside Taichung Park

Sun Moon Lake inside Taichung Park

This centrally located park has lots of greenery and a man-made lake called 日月湖, which means Sun Moon Lake. Don’t confuse this with the famous Sun Moon Lake about 70 kilometres away.

That one is called 日月潭 in Chinese, which is more like Sun Moon Pond, even though it's obviously the bigger of the two by far.

The lake in the park is a popular place to rent rowboats, and the gazebo out on the water is the oldest example of Japanese colonial architecture in the city.

I was here on a Sunday afternoon and it was very lively, with lots of people having picnics and some kind of festival going on.

If you still have some time left in the day, from here it’s not too far to the Taichung Confucius Temple (see description in the next section). Just remember that it closes at 5 pm and is closed all day on Mondays.

Dinner at Guan Shi Yin Organic Lifestyle OR Yizhong Street Night Market

Guan Shi Yin Organic Lifestyle: Open daily 10 am to 7:30 pm.

Yizhong Street Night Market: Open daily 11 am to 10:10 pm, open late until midnight on Sundays.

Guan Shi Yin Organic Lifestyle vegetarian restaurant

Set meal with king oyster mushrooms at Guan Shi Yin Organic Lifestyle vegetarian restaurant

If you’re not continuing to the Confucius Temple, then head back toward the station for dinner at Guan Shi Yin Organic Lifestyle (觀世音有機生活館). The friendly owner of this vegetarian restaurant speaks very good English, although she’s also happy to speak in Chinese if you want to practice.

I highly recommend ordering the king oyster mushrooms with rosemary and soy sauce! Even though the seasoning didn’t look or taste like rosemary, the mushrooms themselves were delicious.

You can order this either as a single dish or as part of a set meal with side dishes and soup. There’s also a health food store within the same space.

Otherwise, if coming from the Confucius Temple then you’ll pass Yizhong Street Night Market on your way back to the city center. I haven’t tried this one yet, but if you want to have the typical night market experience in Taiwan, this could be a good chance.

Almost all night markets have at least a few vegan options, such as fried mushrooms, corn on the cob, or sweet potato balls.

Alternative Things to Do in Taichung and Day Trip Options

The following attractions are all a bit further away from the Taichung city center, which is why I didn’t include them in the 1-day or 2-day Taichung itineraries.

Some are located in the Taichung outskirts, while others are completely out of the city and will take the better part of a day to reach. Nevertheless, if you have extra time you might find it worth seeking some of them out, depending on your interests.

Most of these I haven’t been to yet, so the info below is based on online research. I’ve indicated in the descriptions below what kind of traveler each site will likely appeal to the most.

Luce Memorial Chapel

Open Sundays 9 am to 10:15 am and 11 am to 12:15 pm.

This small chapel sits on the Tunghai University campus and was designed by the firm of the famous Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei. It’s named in honor of a 19th-century American missionary to China.

Its striking design is somewhat reminiscent of a teepee, with a steeply slanting roof that reaches all the way down to the ground. The chapel is open for services on Sundays only, but most people just come to take photos from the outside anyway.

Appeals most to : Photographers/Instagrammers and fans of modern architecture.

Taichung Confucius Temple

Open 9 am to 5 pm, closed Mondays.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by mcgauthier (@mcgauthier) on Dec 8, 2019 at 4:07pm PST

This is one of four major Confucius Temples in Taiwan. It’s about a 30-minute walk from the train station, but in the opposite direction from most other places of interest.

I did try to visit this one, but I made the mistake of going on a Monday. The Confucius Temple in Tainan was under major renovation when I visited there, and I also somehow missed the ones in Taipei and Kaohsiung, so I  just don't have good luck with Confucius temples in Taiwan. It looks beautiful in the photos I’ve seen, though.

Appeals most to : cultural travelers.

National Taichung Theater

No set opening hours, depends on performances.

National Taichung Theater

This modern opera house and concert hall is another one for modern architecture lovers. A variety of concerts and other cultural events are held here, though judging by Instagram, most people just come to pose in front of the wavy façade.

There are also some shops and eateries inside. Guided tours are available in English by prior reservation for NT$ 100.

Appeals most to : Photographers/Instagrammers, fans of modern architecture, cultural travelers

Feng Chia Night Market (逢甲夜市)

Open daily 4 pm to 2 am, closes early at 1 am on Mondays.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Martin Santos (@martin.santos.353) on May 5, 2020 at 2:37am PDT

Also sometimes transliterated as the Fengjia Night Market, this is arguably the most famous night market in the entire country, and also the largest. And that’s saying a lot in a country that goes wild for night markets!

However, I was advised by local friends to skip it. Not only is it super crowded, but you have to dodge scooters zipping through the rows as well as people.

From what I’ve heard from local vegans, there are a few vegan options, but nothing you can't find elsewhere. Yizhong and Zhongxiao are two more centrally located night markets.

And if you're going to make a special trip out of the center, for a vegan night market experience you’ll want to go to the Taichung Ruifeng International Gourmet Village (台中瑞豐國際美食村).

Here you’ll find a whole row of at least four vegetarian stalls next to each other. The Gourmet Village is closed Monday through Wednesday, but on other days it’s open from 5 pm to 12 am.

It’s about as far from the center as Feng Chia is, although you could actually walk there from Rainbow Village in about 30 to 40 minutes.

Totoro Bus Stop

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Peter and Yen (@peterandyen) on Apr 29, 2020 at 8:30pm PDT

If you’re a die-hard fan of the Ghibli Studio films and of My Neighbor Totoro in particular, then you might want to make a trip out to the Totoro bus stop.

Remember, though, there is also a similar bus stop at Painted Animation Lane, which casual fans will probably be satisfied with.

The main difference between the two is that the Painted Animation Lane bus stop is a bench in front of a painted mural, whereas this one features life-sized sculptures of Totoro and No Face.

It’s the brainchild of a Totoro fan who made the sculptures from scrap materials.

Appeals most to : Hardcore fans of My Neighbor Totoro and Ghibli Studio.

Gaomei Wetlands

Bird life at Gaomei Wetlands

Bird life at Gaomei Wetlands

This vast wetland north of Taichung harbor is famous for its sunsets, its wind turbines and its bird-watching opportunities. Be prepared for strong winds, especially if you go during the winter.

There’s an 800-meter-long wooden walkway that you can follow out into the bay. Most people arrive in the afternoon, around 4 pm, and then stay to watch the sunset.

Appeals most to : Photographers/Instagrammers and nature lovers.

Zhongshe Flower Market

Zhongshe Flower Market Taichung

Zhongshe Flower Market Taichung

If you enjoy posing for photos in the middle of a field of colorful flowers, then this is the place for you. There are even some props to add extra pizazz to your IG shots, like a fake windmill and a fake piano. From January to March, you can even find tulips growing here. Quite an impressive feat in the scorching heat of Taiwan!

Appeals most to : Instagrammers and botany enthusiasts

921 Earthquake Museum

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alexius Chua (@alexiuschuayygh) on Dec 5, 2018 at 7:40pm PST

This museum was built around the remains of a junior high school that was destroyed by a devastating earthquake on 21 September 1999. Just as 9/11 holds bitter memories for many Americans, so does the date 9/21 for Taiwanese.

Inside the museum are displays on the science of earthquakes, but it also serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives and as a reminder of the need to prepare for future disasters. Judging by Taiwan’s impeccable handling of COVID-19 thus far, the country seems to have taken the lesson to heart.

Appeals most to : those interested in history and/or dark tourism

Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden

Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden in Taichung

Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden in Taichung

This Chinese-style mansion is one of the last remaining examples of Qing-dynasty architecture in Taiwan. Entrance costs NT$ 250 but includes a free audio guide. You can walk here from the 921 Earthquake museum in 30 to 40 minutes, or take bus No. 50 between the two.

Getting Around Taichung

The Taichung metro is supposedly set to open soon, but they’ve been saying that for years now. Until then, you’ll have to make do with buses, taxis and you’re on two feet.

But the good news is, bus rides of up to 10 kilometres are free! You still have to tap in and out with an IC card, but you should definitely get one of those anyway as soon as you arrive in Taiwan.

Lots of buses run down Taiwan Boulevard, aka Highway 12. It has a dedicated bus lane, so you’re unlikely to get stuck in traffic. Sights that can be reached easily from this highway include Calligraphy Greenway, the CMP Block Museum of Arts when it reopens, the National Taichung Theater and Luce Memorial Chapel.

Bus No. 75 goes to the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts from near the Taipei main station, and it also passes by Veganday Cuisine. Bus No. 81 goes to the Confucius Temple from the main station, and Bus No. 309 goes to Gaomei Wetlands.

Directions in Google Maps are pretty accurate in Taiwan, so that’s probably the best way to find the bus routes for where you want to go.

As a reminder, you’ll only really need to take transport if you’re visiting Rainbow Village or the alternative Taichung attractions listed in the above section. Everything else in this two-day Taichung itinerary can be visited on foot.

Taichung Itinerary Map

You’ll find all the Taichung attractions mentioned in this guide marked on the map below. The 1-day Taichung itinerary is marked in green, the second day of the 2-day Taichung itinerary is marked in red, and the alternative attractions are marked in black.

Where to Stay in Taichung

Chance hotel.

Chance Hotel in Taichung, Taiwan

The rooms at Chance Hotel are simple but comfortable.

We stayed at the Chance Hotel, which offers a good standard of service at a bargain price, at least during the week.

It’s very central, close to the station, and the rooms are modern and comfortable. Other facilities include a laundry room with a washer and dryer, and automated check-in and check-out.

If you arrive early, you won’t be allowed to check in until 3 pm, but you can store your luggage in the lobby.

See more photos and read reviews of Chance Hotel here .

Blues Hotel

Blues Hotel Taichung Taiwan

This fantastical building is as colorful on the inside as on the outside.

This building right across the street from Chance Hotel caught my eye, and I just had to find out what it was. It looks like it belongs in Barcelona , right alongside Gaudi’s fantastical designs.

Turns out, it’s also a hotel. And judging from the photos online, it looks like the walls and ceilings of the rooms and communal areas are covered with colorful murals as well. This would be a fun place to stay if traveling with kids.

About Wendy Werneth

I’ve liked mostly the name of the village “Rainbow village”. But is there any boat on the water of willow river? If there were some boat, one can enjoy the beautiful sceneries going between Painted Animation Lane and the Taichung Second Market.

' src=

Hi Niloy, I don’t think there are any boats on the Liuchuan river, or at least I didn’t see any. It’s a pretty narrow and probably shallow channel, so I doubt that boats could fit. It’s a lovely place for a walk, though!

' src=

Oh! I got it Wendy. I have a question to you. How many countries have you visited? 🤔

So far, I’ve visited 117 countries. 😊

Oh my God! Just incredible. ☺ I have really become your follower and fan. 😍

An Easy Taichung Itinerary for 1, 2, or 3 Days

Dear reader: This article contains links to products and services that I may be compensated for, at no extra cost to you.

Central Taiwan’s largest city, Taichung, is one of the country’s most compelling places to visit. For those who love art, history, culture, street food , quirky sights, and Instagram-worthy hot spots, Taichung has much to offer.

If you’ve already read my list of unique things to do in Taichung , you may be wondering how to put it all together for your visit. That’s why I’ve compiled this Taichung itinerary for one, two, or three days. It’s important to plan your visit well because the city is quite spread out! You can also fine tune your plans with my Taichung visitor’s guide .

Keep in mind that “Taichung City” now refers to what used to be a whole county, called “Taichung County”. Taichung city and county were combined in 2010. So “Taichung city” now covers a huge area from the west coast all the way to Taroko Gorge National Park in the east of Taiwan.

Most of the things in this Taichung itinerary will be in the city center of Taichung. For more remote parts of Taichung, you’ll want to see my list of the best day trips from Taichung !

Table of Contents

How Many Days to Spend in Taichung

Totoro bus stop on painted animation lane, a must on your Taichung itinerary!

It’s possible to visit Taichung as a day trip from Taipei . You could stick to my day 1 itinerary below, but it would be less rushed if you spend the night. You can ride the HSR to get there fastest ( find discounted tickets and see my HSR booking guide ), but note that the Taichung HSR station is outside of the city center, so you need to add a little time to take a local train or taxi once you arrive.

Most visitors spend 1 or 2 nights in Taichung. With one full day, you can see the main attractions in the city center, visit Rainbow Village, Gaomei Wetland, or Zhongshe Flower Market , in the afternoon, and check out a night market in the evening.

If you have more time on your trip and are able to spend a third day in taichung, I encourage you to get out of the city center are and explore some more remote Taichung attractions. I’ll give several ideas for that below.

Hopefully by the end of this article, you’ll understand why Taichung is one of the best places to visit in Taiwan , and certainly deserves a spot on your Taiwan itinerary ! For more general information about traveling in Taiwan, see my blog about travel in Taiwan .

Best Taichung Day Tours

If you decide to sign up for any of the Klook tours or activities I recommend below, make sure to use my referral link to sign up for Klook first and get TWD100 off your booking. I personally use Klook all the time and highly recommend it!

Gaomei Wetland, Rainbow Village, and Miyahara : The most popular Taichung tour out there. If you’re interested in history and culture, try this Taichung Downtown Tour with DIY Sun Cake making . For DIY touring, consider renting a scooter in Taichung . A Taiwanese license or IDP is needed.

More Taichung Itinerary Essentials

– Taichung is about 2 hours from Taipei by regular bus/train, or one hour on the High Speed Rail. Book your HSR ticket online to get a discount or take advantage of this 2-for-1 HSR ticket deal . You can also take a shuttle bus directly from Taoyuan airport to Taichung.

– The Taichung MRT started running in 2021, but there is only 1 line. It goes from the HSR station to Fengchia Night Market, but it doesn’t go to Taichung station or the city center area yet. Taichung buses are free for rides under 10 km. You still need to swipe on (look for 上 on the sign) or off (下) with an EasyCard . Learn how to use EasyCard in Taiwan here .

– Also consider getting around Taichung by YouBike. Read my guide to using YouBike with or without a local phone number .

– If you visit Taichung during Chinese New Year in Taiwan , you may find that many shops, attractions, and restaurants are closed on from New Year’s Eve to Day 2 of the New Year.

Taichung Itinerary 1 Day

If you’ve only got one day in Taichung, it’s still possible to take in some of the best this city has to offer. Below I’ll squeeze what I believe to be the city’s best sights into a Taichung 1 day itinerary.

This Taichung one day itinerary is a little rushed, I must admit, so feel free to cut out some of the stops if necessary. But I’d rather give you too many ideas than not enough!

Morning time involves a lot of walking, so I would totally recommend hopping on a YouBike if you can!

Taichung Cultural Heritage Park, a great way to start your Taichung one day tour

Start your day with a stroll through Taichung Cultural Heritage Park (opens 6 a.m., free), a Japanese-era sake distillery located on the southwest side of the Taichung Railway Station.

The distillery has been converted into an arts & culture village, with lots of colorful artworks on display and craft markets on weekends. There are lots of Instagram-worthy photo ops, such as a lane with a canopy of colorful lanterns.

Natura Way Six Arts Cultural Center Taichung, and must when you have 1 day in Taichung

Next, head to Natural Way Six Arts Cultural Center (13 minute walk, opens at 9:30 a.m., free), a former Japanese martial arts center. The wooden buildings here are really photogenic and peaceful. Perfect background for a photo shoot!

For more cool Japanese-era architecture in Taiwan, see my articles on Dihua Street in Taipei, Jiufen in New Taipei City , and Beitou Hot Springs !

Chun Shui Tang Taichung, the original pearl milk tea (bubble tea) store, a must on your Taichung itinerary!

Now it’s time to make a pilgrimage to Chun Shui Tang (6 minute walk), the supposed birthplace of bubble tea (boba or pearl milk tea). Heads up, their signature original bubble teas are huge! You can even learn how to make your own bubble tea there.

Once you’ve refreshed your thirst, make your way to Painted Animation Lane (10 minute walk, 24-hours, free). A quirky sight, indeed, but don’t expect too much more than a short alley with cartoons painted on the sides!

Painted Animation Lane Taichung

Still, it’s a must if you love anime, and there’s even a Totoro Bus Stop here if you don’t make it to the more famous one (see day 2 below!)

After that, follow the Liuchuan Riverside Walk along the canal to Taichung Second Market (15-minute walk), a traditional market in a cool historical building with an internal courtyard. I would personally recommend Yang Mama Lishi (楊媽媽立食), which specializes in sushi, cold sesame noodles, and fish skin stew.

You can also find many other Taiwanese street food classics there.

Taichung Park Pavilion, Taichung Park

If you’ve somehow got extra time/energy at this point, walk off your lunch at enormous Taichung Park (12-minute walk), or head back towards Taichung Train Station to have dessert at Miyahara Ice Cream (10-minute walk). Heads up, though; this ice cream shop (and restaurant and cake & souvenir shop) is EXTREMELY popular and there is always a long line.

If you really have your heart set on getting one of their ridiculously oversized ice creams, just join the line, or consider going right when they open at 10 a.m!

Miyahara ice cream, Taichung

But even if you don’t want to bother with the ice cream, it’s still worth taking a look inside the shop; it’s quirky as hell; most people describe it as straight out of Harry Potter!

Your next stop will be the famous Rainbow Village is a small collection of buildings that was once part of a military dependent’s village built to house soldiers from China. One soldier didn’t want to leave, so he painted every surface of his home with bright colors.

His idea worked, so his house still stands! People call him Rainbow Grandpa, and he turned 100 years old in 2023! Rainbow Village is a little remote from other attractions, but you can’t leave it off your Taichung itinerary.

Read about my visit to Rainbow Village before it was damaged and my more recent visit to Rainbow Village now that it has reopened again .

Rainbow Village, a sight that you can't leave off your Taichung itinerary!

To get there, hop in a taxi (around NTD300) or take bus #27 (one hour) from the north side of Taichung Railway Station (the side you are on already). Get off at Gancheng Village 6 stop (千城六村站), one stop after Lin Tung University (嶺東科技大學).

If that seems like too much trouble, just sign up for this popular Rainbow Village and Gaomei Wetland tour ! Head to this article to read all about Gaomei Wetland .

After visiting Rainbow Village, if you’ve still got time and energy before dinner, head to Luce Memorial Chapel (路思義教堂), an iconic Taichung building located on the campus of Tunghai University (東海大學).

You can get there in about an hour by walking from Rainbow Village to Ling Tung University (Yongchun S Rd) bus stop and hopping on bus #48 towards Gancheng Station. If you don’t mind spending the cash, simply hop in a cab.

Fengchia Night Market (Fengjia Night Market) Taichung)

Last, but certainly not least, it’s time to have a dinner feast at Taichung’s most famous night market, Feng-Chia Night Market . The market is huge and its easy to get lost, so make sure you see my map and guide to Feng-Chia Night Market .

If you decide to skip Luce Memorial Chapel, you can take bus #74 from Rainbow Village (Lingdong S. Rd.) bus stop to Chao Ma Bus station then walk the remaining 20 minutes, or walk eight minutes from Chao Ma to Henan Taiwan Blvd. Intersection and take bus 33, 63, or 358 to Feng Chia University (Fuxing Rd.) stop.

You can also get to Fengchia Night Market by riding the new Taichung MRT green line to Wenxin Yinghua Station and walking about 15 minutes.

For night market lovers, also check out my guide to the other night markets in Taichung !

Taichung 2 Days Itinerary

If you’ve got 2 days in Taichung, then follow my Taichung 1 day tour above on your first day, and continue below for your day 2 in Taichung.

Your second day in Taichung shall be devoted to a collection of worthwhile attractions in the southern end of the city. While these aren’t the traditional “must-sees” of Taichung’s city center, they may appeal even more to certain types of travelers.

This second day in Taichung isn’t quite as busy as the first, so you may have time in the late afternoon to see anything that you missed on Day 1.

921 Earthquake Museum, something to add to your Taichung 2 day itinerary

Take Ubus #50 (45 minutes) to the 921 Earthquake Museum (NTD50, opens 9 a.m., free before 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, closed Mondays, see official site ). Cross the street from the north side of the train station to find the bus stop.

The 921 Earthquake Museum is a vivid reminder of the immense damage that was done to the region in earthquake of September 21, 1999 , the largest and deadliest in Taiwan’s history.

The museum occupies a former junior high school that was right on the earthquake’s fault line and was completely damaged by it. Everything was left right in place, so you can see caved in classrooms, distorted track and field lines, and even try an earthquake simulation experience.

Guangfu New Village, Taichung

After spending an hour or two at the museum, walk to Guangfu New Village (10 minutes) from the front entrance of the 921 museum (not the back one where you were dropped off by the bus).

Guangfu New Village (光復新村) is a former military dependent’s village, just like Rainbow Village. But compared to Rainbow Village, it is larger and has more things to see. Here you can find several blocks of semi-dilapidated buildings that have been converted into art galleries, cute cafés, and restaurants.

You may find the village very quiet and empty if you come too early/on a weekday morning, but afternoons and especially weekend afternoons have the most going on. This is also a great spot to have lunch before you continue on to the next stop.

Taichung Lin Family Garden in Wufeng District

From Guangfu New Village, walk to Kengkou Village (Guangfu New Village) 坑口里(光復新村) bus stop and take bus 50 or 151 to Wufeng Post Office (霧峰郵局) stop to reach Wufeng Lin Family Garden (霧峰林家宮保第園區).

Wufeng Lin Family Garden is a beautifully preserved traditional mansion, occupying two large compounds, with a garden nearby (“Lai-Yuan of Wufeng’s Lin Family” on GoogleMaps).

Next, if you have the interest/desire, catch bus #50 from the same bus stop to Caohu (草湖) stop to take a look at Dali Art Plaza , an art-focused department store and plaza. This stop will mainly appeal to anyone who likes art and/or shopping.

Dali Art Plaza, Taichung

Depending on how quickly you moved today, you may or may not have time to spare once you get back to the Taichung City Center. If you do, hit any stops that you missed on Day 1.

Consider visiting Taichung Park for sunset. Then I recommend finishing this day at Yizhong Street Night Market , which is just north of the park.

Taichung Itinerary 3 days

Lihpao Discovery Land, which you can consider adding to your taichung 3 day itinerary

If you have a third day in Taichung, then it’s definitely time to get out of the city center. here I’ve compiled over 20 possibilities for day trips from Taichung .

The following are some of the most popular ones:

– Zhongshe Flower Market : A very popular collection of flower displays open year round. It’s just north of the city center and you can get there in about 1 hour by bus. See my guide to Zhongshe Flower Market .

– Sun Moon Lake One of the most popular attractions in Central Taiwan, along with the mountain resort of Alishan . See my guide to Sun Moon Lake for all the details. As a day trip, it might be best to join one of these tours .

– Xitou Monster Village : yet another quirky sight, a Japanese monster themed village up in the hills of Central Taiwan. See my complete guide to Xitou Monster Village here .

– Gaomei Wetlands : Wildlife and epic sunsets on the coast. The easiest way to get there is on this tour . See my guide to Gaomei Wetlands .

– Cingjing Farm : see cows and sheep graze on the roof of Taiwan! It’s quite a journey, but you can make it by joining this tour or this one . See my Cingjing Farm guide , how to get from Taichung to Cingjing , and why Cingjing isn’t my favorite place .

– Guguan : One of the most famous hot springs in Taiwan

Where to Stay in Taichung

Norden Ruder Hostel (see on Agoda / Booking / TripAdvisor ) is a great new, highly rated hostel conveniently located right across from the Taichung’s main train station. You wouldn’t believe the views from the 12th floor windows!

A friend of mine also recommended Blue Sky Hotel (see on Agoda / Booking / TripAdvisor ).

Visitors rave about Old School (see on Agoda / Booking / TripAdvisor ), a cheaper mid-range option just south of the train station with friendly staff and large rooms.

For a boutique hotel with a slide right into the lobby, stay at RedDot (see on Agoda / see prices / read reviews ). Inhouse Hotel Grand (see on Agoda / Booking / TripAdvisor ) is anothe decent mid-range choice.

Also don’t miss my detailed guide to where to stay in Taipei for before/after your Taichung visit.

Hi, am I able to buy the HSR tickets from Taoyuan airport and to use it on the next day to travel from Taipei Shilin to Sun moon lake Taichung? Cos with 2 large luggages it’s quite inconvenient to take a bus. How much is taxi?

Hi Lynette, No, you are not able to buy HSR tickets at the airport, because there is no HSR station there. There IS a Taoyuan HSR station, but it’s not at the airport, it’s about 10 minutes drive from the airport. But it doesn’t matter, you don’t need to buy a ticket one day before. You can just go to Taipei Main Station HSR and buy a non-reserved ticket on the same day you will take the HSR to Taichung. Then you can sit in any chair in the non-reserved section, cars 10-12 on the train. Sun Moon Lake is not in Taichung, it’s in Nantou. You can take a bus from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake, about 90 minutes. There should be space under the bus for your luggage. If you want to take a taxi from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake it will be very expensive.

Hi, Nick! Is Xinxe Castle worth a visit?

Hey Letecia, I think it depends on the person. The castle/mansion looks European-style, so it’s a little unusual for Taiwan. There isn’t much to do there besides walking around and taking pictures. So if you are looking for pictures with a special background, it might be worth it, but for some people, this might not be their thing. Note that you need to pay 250 NT to go in, and you get a 100 NT voucher to use at one of the restaurants or souvenir places inside.

Hi Nick, We will arrive at Taoyuan at 1.30pm and plan to visit Cingjing the following day. Should we spend the night at Taichung so we can catch the bus to Cingjing next morning ? There seems to be very limited hotels near Taichung HSR station and they are not walking distance. Any recommendations ? Alternatively we can stay in Taipei and take early HSR to Taichung.

You could take the HSR to Taichung, then transfer to the regular train (Xinwuri station, right beside the HSR station), ride the train to the Taichung city center, and stay in a hotel there. Then the next morning, you can catch the bus from Taichung bus station to Cingjing via Puli.

Hi! To get around in Taichung, Is it cheaper to get around just by using Uber?

Local taxis might be slightly cheaper, but Uber is more reliable and usually has nicer cars.

Hi Nick If to choose one, Cingjing or Sun Moon Lake? Which is the better choice with 4 kids in tow from 7 to 18yo? Should we spend a night in either choice? We will spend 4 nights in Taichung. Thank you

That’s a tough choice. I would say Cingjing has better mountain views, and seeing the farm animals and sheep shearing show / horsemanship shows should be fun for kids. It’s nice to spend a night there to be able to enjoy the sunset and sunrise views. SML on the other hand has a bigger range of activities – cycling, boat rides, temples, gondola. It’s also nice to spend a night there to enjoy the lake view at sunset. Ideally you should try to spend a night at each one if you can! If not, you’ll just have to choose which one sounds more interesting for your kids. The bus takes longer to Cingjing, if that’s a factor.

I am figuring out where I can try the indigenous people’s lives and their very own cuisine in the area. Got any recommendations?

Also, if I am doing a 7-day trip to Taiwan, the very first time. Would you recommend just 2days 1 night trip in tai Chung and most of the time in Taipei and explore the historical part of the city itself? We are more into historical sites, very local authentic food and the wild nature.

Taichung is not a very aboriginal city/area. Your best bets would be Wulai (day trip from Taipei) or Ita Thao (a village on Sun Moon Lake). Both of those have market streets with lots of aboriginal foods and drinks. For wild nature, look up my recommended hikes in northern Taiwan (search “Taipei hikes” on this site). Consider making a day trip or overnight trip to Hehuanshan for wild, high mountain hiking. Search “Hehuanshan” on my TaiwanObsessed website.

Taichung Itinerary – 1 Day in Taichung

Taichung itinerary one day, one day in Taichung itinerary, one day Taichung DIY itinerary, things to do in Taichung, Taichung travel guide, rainbow village, bubble tea, night market cover

Taichung is the second largest city in Taiwan, located on the east coast and home to Taichung International Airport. Even if you don’t find yourself commuting through its airport, there are countless reasons to add Taichung to your Taiwan itinerary. With a one day in Taichung itinerary , you can see a lot of the city’s highlights.

Taiwan is a country famous for its night markets, and Taiwan’s largest night market happens in Taichung. Tapioca bubble tea, the drink that has taken Asia by storm, was founded in Taichung. The famous Rainbow Village that was saved from demolition by a grandpa and his love of painting? Also in Taichung. It’s also the largest city that serves as a gateway to Taiwan’s famous Sun Moon Lake .

Whether you find yourself passing through Taichung or staying several nights here, see the highlights of Taichung with this DIY one day in Taichung Itinerary.

How To Get To Taichung

Taichung International Airport is the newest International Airport in Taiwan. If you are arriving to Taichung straight from the airport, it’s easy to get to city center by taxi or public bus. Bus #9 is a free option to get to the city, and #302 costs 100 NTD ($3) for a more direct route.

I recommend getting an  EasyCard , the Taiwan public transit card, to get from the airport to Taichung city center to start this Taichung itinerary.

How to get to Taichung from Taipei

Countless busses and numerous trains depart from Taipei every day heading along Taiwan’s east coast towards Taichung. It takes about 2-3 hours to reach Taichung depending on the method of transportation, so consider spending the night in Taichung to make sure you can see everything on this one-day Taichung itinerary!

  • Book a seat on Taiwan’s high-speed trains from  Taipei to Taichung here .
  • If you want to take a bus from Taipei to Taichung, see the  schedule here .

Where to Stay For Your One Day in Taichung Itinerary

When planning a DIY Taichung Itinerary, it’s best to stay close to Taichung’s central train and bus station. This will help you get around the city, as well as to and from Taichung to other Taiwan destinations.

I stayed at  Backpacker 41 Hostel , which is walking distance from the train station, Miyahara ice cream store, and the Sun Cake Museum. It’s spacious and includes a small kitchen and common area.  Stray Birds Hostel  is another backpacker favorite is in the Western part of the city, which has several cozy common areas, plus a spacious rooftop.

Mid-Level options include the comfortable  EazyLazy Inn  in Taichung’s North District, or the  CityInn Hotel  near Taichung Station.

For luxury options, try the spacious  LaiLai Hotel  overlooking the Yizhong Street Night Market, or the high-rise with floor-to-ceiling windows, the  Landis Taichung .

Getting Around During Your DIY Taichung Itinerary

Upon arrival in Taiwan, be sure to purchase an EasyCard . It’s a transit card that can be used all around Taiwan on many forms of public transportation. The best part: bus rides in Taichung are FREE if you use your EasyCard, and the distance is within 10 kilometers.

If you’re traveling solo or in a pair, consider  renting a scooter  to get around quicker. For larger groups, it might be easiest to  hire a private vehicle  to take you around to Taichung’s top attractions.

Staying Connected for your Taichung Itinerary

Because you’ll be taking a lot of busses to get around for this DIY Taichung itinerary, I highly recommend getting a  Taiwan SIM card . If you’re traveling with more than one person, consider a  portable WiFi device  that you can all connect to. Being online will save you immense amounts of time and stress trying to navigate busses and map directions for your Taichung one-day itinerary.

day trip to taichung

One Day in Taichung - Morning

Start your one day in Taichung itinerary by heading to one of the most famous places in Taiwan: the Rainbow Village.

Rainbow Village, Taichung

The Rainbow “Village” is actually more of a collection of a few buildings, that were saved from demolition by the Grandpa Huang, a resident of the settlement. He painted over everything in the village, from the ground to the rooftops, with his colorful characters and attracted enough attention to save these buildings.

Rainbow village is free to visit, and within its small cluster of buildings is an informational exhibit about Grandpa Huang, as well as a few gift shops and a small cafe. If you’re lucky, Grandpa himself will be there, still painting small souvenirs!

Rainbow village opens at 8:00am every day, and the tour busses full of people start arriving not long after. Rainbow village can be reached from Central Taichung by taking the — or — busses. It’s a bit of a drive to get there, so plan ahead!

Chun Shui Tang – The First Bubble Tea Seller In Taiwan And The WORLD!

Next on your DIY Taichung itinerary is a Taiwan-must. Go back towards city center to stop by the bubble tea store Chun Shui Tang . On Google Maps, the correct Chun Shui Tang is marked “(The Original Store)”. This is the store where bubble tea was first founded! Although bubble tea has since evolved to include different flavors, different tapioca ball sizes, and colorful exterior cups, Chun Shui Tang sticks to what they know best: the Original.

You have options to grab a meal or snack here, because it’s a full-service restaurant in addition to a tapioca bubble tea store. Reserve a table with the attendant outside, or just walk up to the counter to order just a bubble tea to take away. Expect a little bit of a wait – it’s a popular destination for both tourists and locals!

Check out Chun Shui Tang’s cute  website and menus here .

Painted Animation Lane, Taichung

Once you’ve grabbed your bubble tea from Chun Shui Tang, it’s a 10-minute walk to Taichung’s Painted Animation Lane. Here, you’ll find countless characters from your favorite TV shows, movies, and anime’s painted here. The drawings are super realistic – you’ll feel like you’re standing next to the real characters!

Painted Animation Lane is not too long though, so expect to spend about 10 minutes here tops unless you’re really into taking pictures with the characters.

One Day in Taichung Itinerary - Lunch

368 district.

The best place to stop for lunch during your one day in Taichung itinerary is the trendy 368 District . Dozens of picture-perfect restaurants and cafes form a whole city block here, where you can sit down for a meal. Because of the variety of stores, you could also cafe-hop and grab a snack from a few different places! Local instagrammers love this place for its cute and retro decor, so expect to snap a few great photos here too.

After your meal, you can check out the several boutique shops in the area. You can buy high-quality gifts here like leather goods, jewelry, bags, and more. If you want to take your DIY Taichung itinerary slow, pick up a digestif cafe drink to sip from one of the outdoor patios.

Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Sculpture Garden

If you are interested in art, just south of here is the Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Take some time out of your one day in Taichung itinerary to admire art installations in this tranquil setting.

Outside of the museum is a large sculpture garden that you can wander through for free. In addition to modern art sculptures, it’s also home to large tablets covered in beautifully carved Chinese characters.

One Day in Taichung Itinerary: Afternoon

Head to the other side of the city, to the North District, to continue your one day in Taichung itinerary.

Taichung Confucius Temple

Taichung’s Confucius Temple is a wonder to behold, with its intricate wooden carvings and its elaborate colors. Although it finished construction in 1976, the architectural style takes its roots from the Song Dynasty. The temple has been well preserved through the decades, and many of its rooms are still used today for Confucius study classes.

day trip to taichung

Yizhong Street Shopping District

Walking distance from Taichung’s Confucius Temple is a small shopping and dining district, great for taking a break or blowing off some steam (and blowing some change) on the crane games. At night, this area turns into a bustling night market.

Chungyo Department Store

Head further east and check out the large Chungyo Department Store. I can’t be the only one who loves checking out supermarkets in foreign countries, right?? The first floor here is a massive supermarket which sells a lot of Western food staples, snacks, CHEESE, and condiments for reasonable prices. They also had a lot of vegan and vegetarian food options, including veggie Shin Ramen and delicious, protein-filled vegan jerky. If you’ve been traveling Asia for a while, you’ll love it here too!

Alternatively… Taiwan Museum of Sun Cake

If you prefer to skip the shopping, head back to Taichung City Center and check out the Taiwan Museum of Sun Cake. Sun Cakes are popular Taiwanese desserts that were founded in Taichung. The museum is housed in a beautiful colonial brick building, and contains a few informational panels about the 60+ year history of Sun Cakes in Taichung. Be sure to try some Sun Cakes here and take some home as a souvenir!

Miyahara Ice Cream

Near the center of town is Miyahara Ice Cream, a high-end Taiwanese confectionary store and connecting ice cream shop. Although troves of visitors line up to purchase Miyahara’s elaborate, multi-tiered ice cream bowls, you can freely wander inside their elegant interior space. The building itself is a historic, Japanese colonial building, and the inside feels like you’re in a magical library straight out of Harry Potter.

One Day in Taichung Itinerary: Evening

You can’t finish off your one day in Taichung itinerary without heading to what Taiwan is famous for: night markets. Taichung is actually home to the largest night market in all of Taiwan, located a bus drive away from center city in an up-and-coming neighborhood.

Feng Chia Night Market

Feng Chia Night Market has something for everyone: take-away meals, street food, desserts, bubble tea, souvenirs, and crane games. This night market is a popular evening destination for tourists but also locals in the area coming to buy their dinner on a budget. Prepare to line up for the most popular options, but often there are some hidden goodies where you don’t have to wait. Expect huge crowds here on the weekends as well, although to visit this during your Taichung itinerary, it’s worth braving the masses.

(Traveling this DIY Taichung itinerary with picky eaters? A McDonald’s is located right around the corner.)

1-3 Day Taichung Itinerary and Things to Do in Taichung!

Categories Asia , Itinerary , Taiwan

Taichung may be the second biggest city in Taiwan but it has got nothing on Taipei, in my opinion. There are a few popular Taichung attractions but I will warn you now that these popular places to visit in Taichung are pretty spread out and getting around Taichung is not easy as there is no metro system so you need to rely on walking, uber, taxi’s or buses, and I couldn’t quite get my head around how to catch a bus in Taichung.

That said, a stop in Taichung works well if you’re travelling around Taiwan on a loop or travelling between Taipei and Kaohsiung , plus there are 2 popular day trips from Taichung that are worth visiting the city for. Essentially, it’s a good base and stopover city in Taiwan.

Taichung Itinerary

How to Get to Taichung ?

This is a pretty important Taichung travel tip ! Taichung is accessible via bus or train. Getting to Taichung by train is probably the best and easiest way to get there whether you are travelling from Taipei to Taichung or Tainan to Taichung. However, one important thing to note is that Taichung has 2 train stations, and they’re not close together!

There’s the TRA Station which is the local train station in Taichung, this is in the centre of the city, then there is the HSR (High-Speed Rail) Station which is a lot further out of the city and a 20-minute taxi ride. I believe there is a train between the two, and there are definitely buses, but keep this in mind when planning your Taichung travel.

It might be easier to catch a high-speed train from Taipei to Taichung for example but it will still take you another 20 minutes to get into the centre by taxi, and therefore cost more. The high-speed trains in Taiwan cost more than the local trains, so if you’re on a budget in Taiwan and you have time, I’d recommend the slower local train which is still a pleasure to travel on.

One Day Taichung Itinerary

Taiwanese breakfast in taichung.

Taiwan is all about its breakfasts and getting a Taiwanese breakfast is something you must do at least once in Taiwan. For the best local breakfast in Taichung head to Second Market . Be warned that on a weekend in Taichung it will be busier as locals love this market too! It was when I walked past on a Saturday morning but that also adds to the atmosphere!

You may not know what you’re ordering but have a look at what the locals are getting and get whatever you can, it’s going to be good either way!

Taichung Rainbow Village

Taichung Rainbow Village is where I suggest you head next on your Taichung itinerary. How to get from Taichung to Rainbow Village is a little difficult as it is not in the city centre. You can get a public bus- bus 27 or 40 to Lin Tung University which takes about 1 hour plus a little walk from the university to the Rainbow Village. Or you can get a taxi or Uber . Taxi’s in Taichung work on the meter so I got an Uber which cost 240NTD each way.

Be aware that although the Rainbow Village in Taichung is worth visiting and it is a well deserved Taichung attraction , it is very small and there is nothing else to see and do around it so you’ll only need one hour at the Rainbow Village maximum to take photos and have a look around. In fact, visiting there on my own took me about 30 minutes and then I felt ready to leave!

For more information on the Rainbow Village history and how to get there, check out my friend Janet’s blog post here .

Chun Shiu Tang Bubble Tea

Back in the city, as far as things to do in Taichung go it’s pretty much all about the food and drinks! Taichung is the home of Bubble Tea and Chun Shiu Tang on Siwei Street is the original Bubble Tea store in Taichung and a popular place to visit in Taichung . They don’t serve Bubble Tea only, they have a full menu of different tea’s and plenty of food options so it’s a good place to visit for lunch in Taichung on this Taichung itinerary!

If you run out of time or it’s too far for you to get to, Chun Shiu Tang is a chain of Bubble Tea stores in Taiwan and the tea you’ll get in here will be the same as in any other store, and any other Bubble Tea store in Taiwan for that matter. There’s nothing particularly special about the Chun Shiu Original Store in Taichung apart from the fact that it’s the original store!

However, if you are a Bubble Tea fan like myself maybe you’d fancy doing a Bubble Tea masterclass which you can do in this store. I think this is a pretty cool Taichung activity and a great thing to add to your Taichung itinerary seen as there are not many other fun things to do in Taichung , to be honest!

You can book a Bubble Tea making class online KK Day using this link.

Taichung Chun Shiu Tang bubble tea shop outside | taichung itinerary taichung things to do

Taichung Cultural and Creative Industries Park

In the afternoon on this Taichung itinerary , for another one of the places to visit in Taichung you could head to Taichung’s Creative Park. One of the really unique things to do in Taiwan are its Creative Parks, I’ve seen cool ones in Taipei and Kaohsiung and Tai chung has one too!

Taichung Cultural and Creative Industries Park used to be an old fashioned brewery and now it’s a modern place where you can check out the cool art exhibitions, take some good photos and chill out in a pretty peaceful area of the city.

If you’re in need of more things to do in Taichung , Taichung Park is not huge but it is a nice green area of the city and I love the parks in Taiwan for observing local life so be sure to consider this when planning your day in Taichung!

Taichung Night Market

For things to do in Taichung at night there’s only one option – a night market !

Taichung Night Market’s span the city which is great in theory but it doesn’t make getting to them harder as they are not all centrally located.

Personally I ended up at Yizhong Street Night Market twice because it centrally located close to Taichung Park and close to my accommodation in Taichung.

However, Fengjia Night Market is where you want to head if you can because it’s Taiwan’s biggest night market and that’s saying something because Taiwan has some seriously big night markets around the country!

Fengjia Night Market really is huge with food stalls running on both sides of the street and you literally can’t even see the end, let alone walk to the end!

If it’s your first trip to Taiwan and you want to get a full Taiwan experience I think Fengjia Night Market is a must-visit place in Taichung as it’s definitely the best night market in Taichung for a real local experience!

taichung itinerary, Taichung street food market

If you don’t fancy a night market or perhaps if you’re looking where to have dinner in Taichung on another night, somewhere that might take your fancy is the Modern Toilet Restaurant . There are 2 of these themed restaurants in Taipei and there’s one in Taichung too.

I did read on Taichung Tripadvisor that the food isn’t that great and they have limited vegetarian options which is why I didn’t eat there but it’s a fun and quirky restaurant in Taichung which is what Taiwan is all about!

Two to Three Day Taichung Itinerary

One of the reason’s Taichung is a popular city for tourists to visit is because of two places – Sun Moon Lake and the Dakeng Hiking Trails .

Day Trips from Taichung

Sun moon lake day trip from taichung.

I visited Sun Moon Lake on my Taichung day trip . It’s really easy to get a bus from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake. At the bus stop, they sell Sun Moon Lake passes which include bus travel, a boat ticket, a ropeway ticket and they can include bike hire too. It takes 1.5-2 hours to travel from Taichung City to Sun Moon Lake and once you’re there you need about 4-5 hours to see the lake and head over to Ita Thao Village.

Unveiling Sun Moon Lake: Venture into areas unattainable on foot and behold nature in all its vastness.

Some websites rate Sun Moon Lake as one of the Taipei attractions but in my opinion, it is too far away from Taipei and will be a pretty exhausting day trip so it is best to go from Taichung!

For full details on how to do this day trip, have a read of my Sun Moon Lake Travel Guide from Taichung here !

Dakeng Trails Day Trip from Taichung

Taichung doesn’t have a national park close to it but it does have hiking trails and hiking in Taiwan is very popular. I got my first taste of Taiwan hikes when I went to Taroko National Park from Hualien on my first trip to Taiwan!

There are a number of hiking trails and they are numbered, note that some of them are harder than others and the Dakeng trails in Taichung can get very busy on weekends so it’s the best time to go hiking in Taichung is on a weekday if you can. The easier trails get particularly busier than the harder trails too.

It’s possible to get a bus from Taichung to Dakeng Hiking Trails and it’s best to leave early in the morning so you have all day to do your chosen trail. I ran out of time to do the Dakeng Trail hiking but I found this blog post very helpful on how to get to Dakeng Trails and which trail to hike.

Taichung itinerary, sun moon lake day trip from Taichung

Tainan Day Trip from Taichung

Another alternative day trip from Taichung is to Tainan  if it’s not already on your Taiwan itinerary, although I personally liked Tainan and think it is worth at least one night.

There is a high-speed train from Taichung to Tainan which takes 40 minutes however neither of these cities HSR stations are in the centre so you need to get a train from this station to the central station or go a slower local train which will take longer in theory but will be less hassle. Travelling around Taiwan by bus is also popular and possible, Taichung’s bus station is in the centre of the city so a bus from Taichung to Tainan could be an option.

You can’t book trains online via Taiwan’s train system but you can book them online using 12GO Asia, the top transport booking platform in Asia. Search for your trains to Taichung here!

Where to stay in Taichung ?

As far as accommodation in Taichung goes, location wise because the city is spread out you are always going to be far from something in Taichung. I stayed pretty close to Taichung Park which was a good location and I’d say staying close to Taichung Rail Station (if you use the TRA local train to get there) is a good location too.

Best things to do in Taichung City

1 – visit the rainbow village.

Thing to do in Taichung - Rainbow village, Taiwan

The Rainbow Village is one of Taichung City’s most famous attractions . Although located a bit far from the center, the village is easily reached via public transportation. The village is actually a dozen houses brightly painted from roofs to floors. There is a cafe and a souvenir shop there. The entrance is free.

Rainbow Village (Cai Hong Juan Village) is a small settlement that was transformed into a vibrant, colorful, and creative attraction by a former soldier, Mr. Huang Yung-Fu. He took it upon himself to paint the walls, buildings, and streets of the village with bright and whimsical artwork, turning it into a living, open-air art gallery.

If you’re planning to visit Rainbow Village, here are some helpful tips:

  • Getting There: Rainbow Village is located in Nantun District, Taichung City, Taiwan. The exact address is: No. 56, Chun’an Road, Nantun District, Taichung City, Taiwan. Depending on your starting point, you can take a taxi or public transportation to reach the village.
  • Best Time to Visit: The village is open to visitors all year round, but it’s generally better to visit during good weather to fully enjoy the vibrant colors and take great photos. Spring and autumn are often considered the best seasons for traveling in Taiwan due to the milder temperatures.

How to Get to Taichung

To get to Taichung, Taiwan, you have several transportation options depending on your starting location and preferences. Taichung is centrally located on the island, making it easily accessible from various cities and regions in Taiwan. Here are the common methods of transportation to get to Taichung:

  • Flight: If you are coming from an international destination, you can fly directly to Taichung International Airport (RMQ). However, please note that Taichung International Airport has limited international flights, and you may need to consider flying to Taiwan’s main international airports in Taipei (Taoyuan Airport) or Kaohsiung and then taking domestic flights or other transportation to Taichung.
  • High-Speed Rail (HSR): Taiwan’s High-Speed Rail (HSR) system connects major cities on the western side of the island. Taichung has an HSR station called “Taichung HSR Station,” which is conveniently located in Wuri District, just south of the city center. You can take the HSR from Taipei or Kaohsiung and arrive in Taichung in under an hour.
  • Regular Train: Taiwan’s regular train system (TRA) also serves Taichung with multiple daily train services. The main station is “Taichung Station,” which is located in the city center. Regular trains are a cost-effective option if you prefer a slower and more scenic journey.
  • Bus: There are intercity buses connecting Taichung to other cities and towns in Taiwan. Buses are a more economical option and can be convenient for traveling from nearby locations.
  • Car: If you prefer driving, you can rent a car and travel to Taichung. Taiwan has a well-developed road network, and driving can be a good option if you want more flexibility and independence in your travel.
  • Taxi: Taxis are available in Taiwan, but they are more suitable for short distances within the city rather than long-distance travel.

Once you arrive in Taichung, the city has an efficient public transportation system, including buses and taxis, to help you get around and explore various attractions.

Taichung Starts Here

Taichung Starts Here

I’ll enumerate a more specific Taichung itinerary in just a second, but I’ll start with a more general observation: The energy of Taichung (which is pronounced Tai-zhong , and literally means “Taiwan Middle”) is so incredibly inviting.

I found this to be the case, first and foremost, when exploring Taichung attractions like Taichung Confucius Temple and the aptly-named Rainbow Village. It was also apparent, however, when digging into gastronomic delights such as lu rou fan (braised pork rice) and bubble milk tea, served in the shop where it’s said to have originated.

I hope you’ll continue reading, whether you’re in search of a comprehensive Taichung travel guide, or simply want inspiration as you put your own trip together.

Where to Stay in Taichung

Although the city’s footprint is absolutely massive, most of my favorite things to do in Taichung are within biking distance of TRA Taichung Station (which, as is the case with many cities in Taiwan, is a way’s away from the city’s high-speed train distance). As a result, I’m going to recommend lodging that will allow you to sightseeing and eat within the smallest possible perimeter.

As is the case throughout Taiwan, most Taichung hotels aren’t anything special. There are certain exceptions, of course, such as The Cloud , where I stayed during my most recent trip. The Splendor is probably the city’s premier luxury property, while budget-minded travelers and those looking for a more local experience will want to search for Airbnb apartments near the station.

My Favorite Things to Do in Taichung

Go temple hopping.

day trip to taichung

Apologies in advance: This post is going to jump around quite a bit, since the thematic trajectory of a Taichung trip doesn’t follow its geography. With this being said, I will list my favorite Taichung temples in order of how I recommend visiting them. The nearest two to the city center are Taichung Confucius Temple and Paochueh Temple —start your day with these two. You’ll visit Wenchang Temple a little later.

Strike a Pose at the Rainbow Village

day trip to taichung

Specifically, after visiting Rainbow Village , which is one of the most popular things to do in Taichung, in spite of being little more than a selfie studio. Note that this place is also far afield: It’s about an hour by bike from Paochueh Temple. Note that if you don’t want to bike here (it can seem a long trek on a hot or very sunny day), you can always take an Uber herel

Eat Your Way Through Town

day trip to taichung

Whether you’re on the hunt for the original Taichung bubble tea or want a heart bowl of sum-sum for lunch, I’ve got you covered. My favorite Taiwanese food in Taichung can be found at Fu Ding Wan , which is probably Taichung’s most famous spot for lu rou fan , aka braised pork rice. Chun Shui Tang , meanwhile, is known as the birthplace of boba nai cha , more commonly known as bubble milk tea.

Discover Taichung’s Cultural Side

day trip to taichung

Museums are among my favorite things to do in Taichung—and not just because of the free air conditioning. Of course, I’d be lying if I said I fully disregarded this benefit. Logistically, I highly recommend breaking up the journey from Taichung’s temples to the Rainbow Village with stops at National Museum of Natural Science and National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts , respectively.

Take a Day Trip to Sun Moon Lake

day trip to taichung

I’ll start with a disclaimer: You don’t have to do Taichung to Sun Moon Lake as a day trip. Whether or not you decide to stay there, however, I think you’ll find it a worthwhile excursion from the city. My personal favorite place at Sun Moon Lake is Ci-En Pagoda , where you can enjoy the best panorama of the lake, although some travelers prefer biking at water level.

Is Taichung Worth Visiting?

Taichung is worth visiting, yes, especially if you have few expectations going in—I imagine you don’t, apart from whatever curiosity led you to this page. Once you pass this proverbial checkpoint, the next question becomes how many days in Taichung you should spend. In general, I’d say two or three nights is plenty for most travelers, but it depends on what your goal in traveling here is.

Two or three days in Taichung is perfect for sightseeing. This assumes you’ll spend a day or two focusing on core things to do in Taichung, then visit Sun Moon Lake for a day. Generally speaking, I would only recommend longer Taichung trips for people who intend to rent an Airbnb, and to “live” in Taichung for a week or longer, seeking local experiences over tourist ones.

How Taichung Compares to Other Cities in Taiwan

Rather than do a detailed comparison of Taichung vs. Tainan (or Chiayi or Kaohsiung—take your pick), I’d rather discuss how it fits in the context of all of them. Which is to say the following: Taichung is something of a happy medium. It boasts fewer attractions than Kaohsiung and less history or culinary fame than Tainan, but is also less crowded than both. It’s less “authentic” than Chiayi , but also less stressful.

Ideally, of course, your Taiwan itinerary would include all the cities of the country’s highly-urbanized west coast. A perfect Taiwan trip, for that matter, would combine a road trip that runs down the east coast , starting in Taipei and ending in Kaohsiung , stopping in Tainan, Chiayi and Taichung (in that order) on the way back up to the capital, traveling via high-speed rail for efficiency.

Other FAQ About Visiting Taichung

What is special about taichung.

Taichung is known for many reasons, but being “special” isn’t generally one of them. Rather, it’s a sprawling and largely residential/industrial city in central Taiwan, that just so happens to hide some treasures for travelers curious enough to find them.

Does Taichung have MRT?

Taichung does have a single MRT line as of 2023, although its limited scope at this stage also means it has limited utility. If you visit Taichung, it’s really best to use one of the city’s rental bikes to get around, or to use taxis and buses if the weather isn’t feasible for biking.

Which district to stay in Taichung?

Taichung’s central district is the most convenient place to stay, keeping in mind that Taichung isn’t especially convenient as a general rule, on account of its sprawl. Unless you know the city well, I’d advise sticking to hotels (rather than Airbnbs), as most Taichung hotels (certainly those that advertise their services in English) are in areas relatively friendly to tourists.

The Bottom Line

The good news? Taichung is diverse enough to keep you interested, but manageable in number—you’re never going to feel overwhelmed. The better news? Taichung is a welcoming, relaxing city, where you’re feel at home—and at ease—regardless of what you do. It disappoints me, to be sure, that more people don’t consider traveling here, even if that means fewer crowds and lower prices for those of us who do. Loved my Taichung travel guide? Rose from Where Goes Rose : one of the best places to visit in Taichung is the authentic Second Market.

Unlike the busy night markets around Taiwan which serve modern Taiwanese food, such as fried chicken and even hamburgers, this traditional wet market boasts 100 years of history.

Many of the local residents have been serving their signature dishes here for generations, passing down the recipes to their children and grandchildren.

The best thing to try at the Second Market is a famous Taichung breakfast . This Taiwanese answer to an English fry-up is not the most healthy option but it’s certainly very filling and delicious.

This dish comprises a giant cube of fried rice batter, a gooey fried egg, and a ‘sausage’ made of rice. It’s all topped with a hearty dollop of barbeque sauce, as well as a pig’s blood soup if you’re feeling brave!

Within the Second Market, you can purchase fresh fruit and vegetables and even sample freshly made sushi at the fish market. Heaven for lovers of Japanese food!

To visit the Second Market, set your GPS to 87, Section 2, Sanmin Road. The market is centrally located and easy to fit into your Taichung sightseeing plans.

The only tricky bit about this market is that not much English is spoken. Don’t let that put you off though, a little pointing and miming never hurt anyone!

The Taichung locals are a friendly bunch so it won’t be difficult to snag a tasty meal.

Walk around Taichung Park

Lantern in Taichung Park Taiwan

Taichung Park is the oldest park in the city and a lovely place for a stroll. There are multiple lakes, a nice activity is renting a boat and rowing around.

Alternatively, there is a well-kept bicycle lane so a good option is to rent a bicycle. There are bike rental shops near the park as well as an iBike station.

Be sure to admire Houxing Pavilion (also known as Taichung Park Pavilion), which is the symbol of Taichung City and a historical site.

The entrance fee for the park is 30NT. Be sure to bring a reusable water bottle in case you get thirsty.

Visit the marvelous Miyahara Icecream shop

Miyahara Icecream shop Taichung

Caroline from CK Travels : Miyahara is an incredibly popular and Instagrammable ice-cream shop, retail shop, and high-end restaurant set in a renovated red brick building from the 1920s (it's a former ophthalmology clinic).

The ground floor shop interior resembles Hogwarts from the Harry Potter movies and has to be seen to be believed! Large bookcases and gleaming shop counters, with staff all besuited in immaculate uniforms.

You will find local snacks such as pineapple cakes, plus luxury tea, cookies, and gourmet chocolates, wrapped in beautiful packaging and all kept (tantalizingly) behind glass.

Upstairs on the second floor is the restaurant  Moon Pavillion which serves up old Taiwanese gourmet cuisine in a retro setting.

Next door, the queues, and toppings for the Miyahara ice creams are out of this world.

If you do not want to queue for an hour or so, we would recommend getting get your dessert early in the morning (ice cream for breakfast needs to become a thing!) or late in the evening.

There are over 50 fantastic flavors of ice cream (some very unusual) and one scoop will cost you about NT$90. Quirky toppings, such as cheesecake and pineapple cake, are available at an extra cost.

The store is open from 10 am until 10 pm and is a 10-minute walk from Taichung Park.

Join a boba tea-making class at Chun Shui Tang Cultural Tea House

Chun Shui Tang Cultural Tea House Bubble tea by Carole Terwilliger Meyers

Carole from Travel with Carole : Bubble tea or Boba is an extremely popular drink in Taiwan and you can find it anywhere in the country.

No matter how small a village is, there is always a place to buy some boba.

I was delighted to be taking a class at the Chun Shui Tang Cultural Tea House on how to make boba pearl tea, a personal favorite of mine.

It is claimed that pearl tea, which mixes tea with fresh tapioca balls and often includes milk, was invented here.

Bubble tea workshop

The restaurant’s do-it-yourself workshop began with making cold Chinese bubble black tea by combining strong-brewed black tea with ice and liquid cane sugar.

We shook it for 33 shakes until it was full of bubbles, then drank it.

Not bad, but I was most interested in the second part of the lesson, which taught us how to prepare my favorite pearl milk tea (this type of tea is also the shop’s best-seller).

Chun Shui Tang Cultural Tea House DIY pearl tea by Carole Terwilliger Meyers

First, we compared the fresh tapioca pearls used by this shop with the hard, dried-out pearls that many other shops use. We learned that those other balls can last for up to three years ( unrefrigerated)!

For this concoction, we mixed a strong black tea, then added one spoon of dried milk and shook thoroughly.

The last step was pouring the liquid over fresh tapioca balls and stirring the drink before taking a sip. So very yummy!

After the lesson, you can stay on for lunch. I recommend ordering vegetarian handmade noodles, a delicious plate of food.

If you haven't had enough bubble tea, accompany your lunch with chocolate milk tea with pearls.

This drink is very chocolatey, with chocolate shavings floating on top, and worthy of a dessert. A heads-up: even when shared a medium size was too much to finish!

Important: to take this Bubble Tea class, you need to make a reservation. If you speak Chinese you can book via the official site , alternatively, you can also book online (in English).

Admire colorful street art at Painted Animation Lane

Painted Animation Lane in Taichung

Wendy from The Nomadic Vegan : if you like street art or Japanese anime, or if you're looking for a place to get some colorful shots for your Instagram feed, you should definitely visit Painted Animation Lane.

As the name suggests, this is a small alleyway with murals of famous anime and cartoon characters painted on the walls on either side.

Since it's a public street, it's completely free of charge and it's open 24 hours a day (though there's not much point in coming after dark).

While it doesn't draw as many crowds as Rainbow Village (read more below), I'd still suggest arriving fairly early in the morning if you don't have the patience to wait in line for selfies.

The alleyway is quite small, so don't expect anything on the same scale as the  famous Batman Alley in São Paulo .

But it's still a lot of fun, especially if you grew up watching these cartoons and can identify the characters.

Painted Animation Lane is on the west side of the city, the official address is Section 3, Liuchuan West Road. Just search for ‘Painted Animation Lane' on Google Maps and it will pop up.

From Chun Shui Tang Cultural Tea House, it's only a 10-minute walk.

Stroll around Calligraphy Greenway

Calligraphy Greenway Taichung

While you could take a bus or taxi to your next destination, I highly recommend walking.

I love exploring cities on foot, it allows you to get off the beaten path and see places you wouldn't have discovered otherwise.

The Calligraphy Greenway is a lovely open green space with sculptures, street performers, food vendors, and a play area for children (if you happen to travel around Taiwan with kids).

You can find two museums here as well, the National Museum of Natural Science and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, both are definitely worth visiting.

However, if you are short on time, continue walking to the next item on your Taichung travel itinerary: CMP Block Museum of Arts.

From Painted Animation Lane, it's a 30 minutes stroll (2km) to get to the Block Museum, and you'll be walking mostly on the Calligraphy Greenway making it a very pleasant walk.

Visit the CMP Block Museum of Arts

CMP Block Museum of Arts in Taichung

IMPORTANT: the Block Museum is currently closed and it's unknown if it will reopen in the future.

Nisha from Lemonicks: when I decided to plan a trip to Taichung, I immediately added the Block museum to our itinerary.

The pictures of buried cars in the green ground that I'd seen online fascinated me tremendously. And when I saw them in real life, I was in awe!

The full name of the museum is CMP Block Museum of Arts and the museum holds several exhibitions throughout the year. However, the famous buried cars are a permanent feature of the museum.

The museum is part of the first cultural creativity square in Taiwan. The inspiration to build this square came from European streets, where local culture is beautifully integrated into (interactive) art.

Once the museum was conceptualized, the area was transformed from an old school building and broken roads, into a modern museum.

The courtyard has many geometrical and intriguing artifacts, while on the inside you can find seasonal and trending exhibitions. Sometimes they even display art created by kids!

This living museum has no boundaries and people are encouraged to participate throughout their visit. There is also a cozy book cafe and people are invited to read books here for hours.

The area is very popular among locals and has a creative market during holidays. There are many coffee shops and restaurants nearby, so you can spend several hours in the area.

Taichung itinerary day 2

On your second day in Taichung, it's time to head out of the city center and explore some attractions a bit further away. But don't worry, these places are easy to reach, either by public transport or Uber.

Please note that you can't visit all three of these interesting places in Taichung on the same day. Well, you could but you would be rushing through the day without actually having time to enjoy the sights.

Instead, I recommend picking one or two options from the list below.

Do you love nature? Take a tour of the Gaomei Wetlands . If you love street art, visit Rainbow Village. Do you like colorful flowers, make your way to the Zhongshe Flower Market.

Admire the colorful Rainbow Village

Rainbow Village in Taichung Taiwan

Samah from God and Wanderlust : Rainbow Village is arguably the most colorful place in Taichung.

It exuberates everything wholesome, imaginative, and giddy; with small houses intricately painted, it's an art lover and a photographer's paradise.

The village’s history is intriguing. It was painted by Huang Yong-Fu, nicknamed Rainbow Grandpa . He was a Chinese soldier who fled to Taiwan after losing the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

Huang Yong-Fu bought his house in a village, but news came out that the government planned on demolishing this village. He began to paint to preserve his home and those surrounding it.

His hard work and dedication paid off because years later, the artsy village was petitioned to be preserved by local university students upon discovery.

What's more, nowadays it's one of Taiwan’s most famous attractions!

Keep in mind temperatures can be quite high during summer days so be sure to bring enough water. Also, there is an ice cream cart and a cafe with an outdoor seating area shaded by huge trees.

Rainbow Village is located in Nantun District, west of the city center of Taichung. You can easily get there by taxi or public transportation.

Bus 358 takes you from the city center to Lingdong High School. From the school, it’s a 10-minute walk to the village.

Visiting Rainbow Village is free and, as with Painted Animation Lane mentioned above, there isn't really a point in visiting after dark.

Visit Zhongshe Flower Market

Zhongshe Flower Market Taichung

Dea from How She Wanders : Zhongshe Flower Market  is a 6-hectare farm that is famous for its colorful and inviting flower fields.

Visiting this beautiful place is a fun and uplifting experience for the entire family. Expect to see row after row of colorful pretty flowers of many different types in full bloom, all year round!

Also known as Houli Flower Farm or Chungshe Tourist Flower Market, it is a well-known tourist spot located less than an hour's drive from central Taichung. Check the lowest car rental prices here .

The Flower Market is also accessible via local TRA train, board the train at Taichung train station, and disembark at Tai'an Station.

From Tai'an Station, you can take a taxi or walk to the farm (about 25 minutes).

Zhongshe Flower Market is an open-air attraction, so among the must-haves when visiting are sunglasses   and sunscreen .

It's also important to bring enough drinking water to keep you hydrated, don't forget your camera !

A picture-taking haven, photographers of all levels will definitely take delight in playing around with the colorful environment.

Tulip season is between January and March and is considered peak season. The farm is open daily, from 9 am until 6 pm.

Truly a notable destination, no Taichung trip will be complete without a visit to Zhongshe Flower Market!

Did you know you can also book a Taichung classic day tour from Taipei , including a visit to the Zhongshe Flower Market? Check availbility here .

Admire the sunset at the Gaomei Wetlands

Gaomei Wetlands Taichung

Mariza from Hoponworld : Gaomei Wetlands is a firm favorite among nature lovers, bird watchers, and photographers visiting Taichung.

Located south of the Dajia River mouth and spanning over 3km, Gaomei is the perfect spot to immerse yourself in nature.

Besides getting a closer look at the diverse ecology and abundant animal life that call this area home, Gaomei Wetlands is also one of  Taichung's most Instagrammable places.

The highlight of any visit to Gaomei is undoubtedly walking along the 800-meter-long winding boardwalk.

It's incredibly photogenic and also offers the best vantage point over the muddy flatland and the various creatures squiggling in the mud below.

During fall and winter, you'll be able to see many migratory birds there.

Dropping by the lighthouse, biking around the area, popping into the temples nearby, and snacking on some of the local specialties are other popular activities to do in the area.

Although it's a great place to visit during the day, visiting at sunset is highly encouraged.

Watching the changing skies over this serene landscape, and the sun's shimmer on the wetland is truly a surreal experience.

You can take a local bus (1hr) to get to Gaomei. Alternatively, you can also join this excellent Gaomei Wetlands tour .

If you have an international driver's license, there is a small chance you can rent a scooter to explore the area at your own pace.

Unfortunately, most rental places require a Taiwanese driver's license (read more about our experience renting a scooter in Kenting here).

If you do manage to acquire a scooter, the drive to Gaomei Wetlands takes about 30 minutes from Taichung.

Insider travel advice: remember to download google maps and check the tidal forecast before your visit. This way, you'll be able to navigate your way around the area easily and plan your stops.

Taichung itinerary day 3

There are so many places to go in Taichung county (yes Taichung is a whole county, not just a city), and visiting all these Taichung highlights within only three days isn't possible.

So you're going to have to make a choice between two fun day trips; you can either make a day trip to Sun Moon Lake or visit Lukang Township.

Again, it all depends on your preferences:

  • Sun Moon Lake is the place to go if you love beautiful nature or want to learn more about Aboriginal culture.
  • Lukang has a rich history and is considered a showcase of Taiwan's cultural heritage.

Both are worthwhile to visit, however, my personal favorite is Sun Moon Lake. I'll explain why below.

Take a day trip to Sun Moon Lake

Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan 1 month itinerary how to travel in Taiwan

Sun Moon Lake is one of the most popular places to visit in Taiwan. However, don't let that deter you, the crowds aren't that bad and it's a beautiful place with lots of fun outdoor activities and hiking (and cycling) opportunities.

Unfortunately, it rained during our visit, but even then the lake and its surroundings were pretty spectacular.

Cycling at Sun Moon Lake

When the sun is out, a fun activity is to rent a bicycle to cycle around (part of the) lake. Called the Yuetan Bike Path, this 29 kilometers bike route goes entirely around Sun Moon Lake.

Alternatively, you can choose a shorter section, which is around 12 kilometers.

Sun Moon Lake Ropeway

I also recommend riding the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway‭, which offers stunning views over the lake and forested mountains. Another option is to make a boat tour around the lake

Discount option : if you plan to do all these activities, check out the Sun Moon Lake ropeway combo pass , which includes the ropeway, bike rental, and a boat trip over the lake.

Other Sun Moon Lakes highlights

If you have more time and energy, the Wenwu Temple and Ci En Pagoda‭ are also worthy of a visit, both can be reached with the Round-The-Lake-Bus .

Contrary to what the name suggests, this bus doesn't actually go all the way around the lake but only between Shueishe Visitors Center and Syuanguang Temple. You can find more information here.

If you have time, it's actually better to spend one or two nights at Sun Moon Lake . However, visiting Sun Moon Lake from Taichung as a day trip is definitely a viable and popular option as well.

How to get to Sun Moon Lake from Taichung

If you have more than one day to spend the Sun Moon Lake, I recommend traveling by public transport (bus) or to book a shared transfer (in a comfortable minivan).

Buses take just under two hours, a one-way ticket costs 193NT$ and a round-trip ticket is 360NT$. Check the bus schedule here .

If you only have a day at Sun Moon Lake, consider joining a tour . A tour includes transport and several of the activities mentioned above and is a great way to make to most of your limited time at Sun Moon Lake. Check availability .

Make a day trip to Lukang Township

Lukang day trip from Taichung

Milos from Happy Frog Travels : the beautiful Township of Lugang, close to Taichung, is one of the places in Taiwan with the best-preserved historic heritage.

It’s the perfect place to walk down narrow alleys, enter old temples and chat with locals. Lukang used to be a trading port for rice and sugar sent to Mainland China, thus its importance.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the port closed and the city ceased to develop. Luckily, the historical core remained unaltered.

Lukang is famous for its Old Street, a bunch of curvy pedestrian streets surrounded by old houses, 19th-century mansions, and interesting temples.

A king amongst these is Taiwan's oldest temple: Longshan Temple .

This beautiful place has a superb courtyard and an impressive octagonal ceiling. The ceiling supposedly protects the temple from evil.

Another thing to love about Lukang is the authentic bakeries and coffeehouses. You can have a delicious coffee and a cake in a century-old house or try one of the best baos in Taiwan.

Altogether you don’t need much money to visit Lukang. The main attractions like the old houses, temples, and charming streets are all free!

How to get to Lukang from Taichung?

It is very easy to reach Lukang. You can take a direct express bus from the Gancheng Bus Station in Central Taichung.

Another option is to take an old train at Taichung’s central train station to Changhua city. Local buses to Lukang stop right in front of Changhua’s station.

Alternatively, book this Lukang day trip including transportation. This is especially convenient for families interested in visiting Lukang.

If you have more time to spend in Taichung

If you have one more day to spend in Taichung, I'd highly recommend visiting any attractions in Taichung mentioned on this list that you skipped due to time constraints.

For example, if you opted to go to the Gaomei Wetlands and Zhongshe Flower Market on day 2, use your remaining day to visit the Rainbow village!

If you're up for another full day of Taichung sightseeing, you could even combine this with a visit to Lukang and spend half a day at each of the sights.

Taichung Day Trips | 5 Fabulous Places to Visit Outside Taichung City

Attractions in Taichung City alone can keep sightseers happy for days, but travelers shouldn’t miss some golden travel opportunities outside the city, either. These five Taichung day trips can be planned on the fly and accomplished in one day’s time. So, if you get up one day and decide you’d like to join a morning tour of Taiwan countryside attractions, any of these day trips from Taichung are possible without pre-booking – and highly recommended!

Taichung day trips-Taiwan holiday-Sun Moon Lake

Taichung Day Trips | 1. Sun Moon Lake

One of the most beautiful sights and best cultural experiences in Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake is located about an hour and a half south of Taichung City in what is almost the dead-center of Taiwan. The stunning lake is surrounded by lush mountains, hiking trails and residential areas of the Thao people, who have occupied the lake area for more than 100 years. Guests can learn more about this group of Taiwanese aborigines at Ita Thao Visitor Center and Ita Thao Shopping District on the east side of the lake near Yidashao Wharf . While the Ita Thao district is one of the most popular tourist attractions at Sun Moon Lake , it certainly is not the only one. Many visitors find that one day is not enough time in the region, so hotels and accommodations are readily available.

Things to do at Sun Moon Lake

  • Xiangshan Bikeway – this bike path takes sightseers and adventurists around Sun Moon Lake and allows for plenty of photo stops along the way.

Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village – catch a true glimpse of the Thao culture at this amusement park that features live performances by native villagers. The park is open from 9:30 am. to 5 p.m. to Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Wenwu Temple – complete with a stunning view of Sun Moon Lake and a “Year of Steps” guests must climb to earn that view, Wenwu Temple is a can’t-miss attraction for photographers and hikers. The temple and temple grounds are open any time.

Ci’en Pagoda – another stair-climbing challenge, Ci’en Pagoda is a Chinese-style tower that offers views of Sun Moon Lake and the surrounding region. Visitors can climb 280 steps to reach the observation deck, and a hiking path leaders tourists through the nearby countryside. Ci’en Pagoda is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

Hanbi Trail – on the northwest side of the lake, hikers can spend a blissful afternoon on Hanbi Trail . The trail starts at scenic Meihe Park and continues along the banks – and at times even directly over Sun Moon Lake – for two kilometers. The path is a relatively easy walk, so it’s great for travelers who just want to stretch their legs and enjoy nature. That’s what President Chiang Kai-shek and his wife used to do, anyway, every time they visited the area!

Tours – tours of the Sun Moon Lake area are abundant. Visitors can see the lake via boat tour, bus, ropeway or shuttle. Ticket prices vary and can be booked easily once you arrive at Sun Moon Lake . Some tours, like the ropeway tour, include tickets to other area attractions like the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village .

How to get from Taichung City to Sun Moon Lake

Catch a bus at Taichung Station in Taichung City . The ride takes about an hour and a half, and passengers will get off at Shuishe Pier (near Meihe Park and Hanbi Trail ), where ferries to the other side of the lake are available.

Taichung day trips-Taiwan holiday-Xinshe Castle

Taichung Day Trips | 2. Xinshe Castle

A day at Xinshe Castle can include hiking, photography and fine dining, depending on how much time guests want to spend at this gorgeous European-styled castle just northeast of Taichung City . Visitors to Xinshe Castle enjoy tours of the mansion on the premises, as well as all-day views of an on-site pond, waterfall and garden. Photographers and couples can be found here almost every day of the week shooting pre-wedding shots, and other travelers are drawn to Xinshe Castle for its epic scenery, tasty restaurants, boutiques, souvenir shops and local winery. The grounds are too gorgeous for a short visit, and visitors who want to hike through nearby Dakeng Hiking Trails can turn this day trip into an overnight stay.

Hours : 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Admission : 250 TWD (8.30 USD)

Getting to Xinshe Castle

Taking a taxi is the easiest way to get to Xinshe Castle . The ride is about 30 to 45 minutes. Budget travelers can catch the bus at First Square bus stop (near Taichung Station ) and arrive at Xinshe Castle in about one hour. The bus route requires a couple changes.

Taichung Day Trips | 3. Wuqi Fisherman’s Wharf

This day trip won’t require you to leave Taichung City really, but it’s enough on the outskirts that you’ll feel like you’re on a proper getaway. The coastal area near Wuqi Fisherman’s Wharf is perfect for foodies, nature lovers and even shoppers, as there are districts dedicated to each. Visitors can buy fresh seafood right off the boat, have it prepared and lounge around on the wharf while eating. Two other favorite Taichung attractions – Gaomei Wetlands and Taichung City Seaport Art Center – are located in this area as well.

How to get to Wuqi Fishing Port (Fisherman’s Wharf)

Take a train to Qingshui Train Station and taxi the remaining 15 minutes to the wharf.

Taichung Day Trips | 4. Dakeng Hiking Trails

This fun and well laid-out hiking course features 10 trails with incredible lookout points and things to do along the way. The difficulty of the trails ranges from beginner to advanced, and one of the coolest things about the paths is that they are all man-made, right down to the wooden steps, so you don’t have to have any special equipment to visit Dakeng Hiking Trails . Photographers tend to favor Trail 6 and Trail 10, so these pathways get busier on weekends and holidays. The trails are free to enter and open 24 hours a day. They also are right next door to Xinshe Castle .

How to get to Dakeng Hiking Trails

At First Square bus stop (near Taichung Station ), jump on either Bus 21 or Bus 31 and jump off at Dakeng Bus Stop. Taxi rides also are available, and of course, you can drive. It only takes about 30 minutes, and parking is plentiful.

Taichung Day Trips | 5. Zhongshe Flower Market

Always in bloom and always open, Zhongshe Flower Market is a spectacular place to spend a colorful day outside Taichung City . This huge flower garden spans 6 hectares and is a popular spot for photo shoots and couples. Zhongshe Flower Market hosts so many species of flora and fauna that there is never a time during the year that something on the grounds isn’t in bloom. The tulip field, however, is perhaps the most popular attraction. The tulips at Zhongshe Flower Market bloom from January to March, and the garden is the only place in all of Taiwan where tulips grow successfully! The garden is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

How to get to Zhongshe Flower Market

From Taichung Station , take a train to Tai’an Station . From there you can walk the remaining 1.8 kilometers or hail a taxi on Zhonghua East Road.

day trip to taichung

Taichung is regarded as Taiwan’s arts and cultural hub with its many fascinating museums, art installations, and design boutiques. As an architecture lover, I admire and admire the beauty and modernity of this city. Here are the best guides to travel to Taichung with ease and eagerness.

Getting from Taipei to Taichung by HSR or train (# 1 day in taichung)

day trip to taichung

The fastest and most comfortable way to get to Taichung from Taipei is by HSR with a speed of up to 300 km/h. A distance of more than 160 km from Taipei, there are dozens of HSR trains daily and the travel time is only about 45-65 minutes, depending on which train you take to get to Taichung. The HSR train departs at several locations in Taipei City, with Taipei Main Station being the easiest to access. If you’re not close to the city center, hop on an HSR train at Nangang Station or Banqiao Station.

day trip to taichung

The HSR train ticket is about twice as expensive as the train, about NT$700 for a standard seat, and NT$1,250 for a business class seat. If you don’t mind not having a guaranteed seat, non-reserved tickets cost NT$675.

If the HSR is not for you, another straightforward way to get to Taichung from Taipei is by train. The fare is about NT$375 and takes about 2 hours by train. Whether you choose to travel by HSR high-speed train or regular train, you should also book tickets online one day in advance to choose a reasonable departure time.

day trip to taichung

Taichung HSR Station is considered one of the most beautiful train stations in Taiwan, located right next to the MRT station, so it is very convenient to move. Thankfully the station is well connected, with buses, trains, taxis, and the MRT Green Line from Beitun Main Station to Tai Chung HSR Station allowing easy access to central Taichung.

Taichung Bike Tour (# taichung 1 day itinerary)

day trip to taichung

All major cities in Taiwan have a U-Bike (or YouBike) system, a bike rental service. YouBike provides rental services throughout the city. YouBike makes up for what is lacking in the greater public transport system. You can search for U-bike points with Google Maps to easily rent bikes. Your bike tour shall be not hindered by drizzle.

day trip to taichung

From Daqing MRT station, we cycled along the Huamei route along the canal that flows through the city center. The ancient and modern streets of Taichung are on one side, the other side is the gently flowing canal, the cool green trees, and the harmonious landscape, all of which bring you an exhilarating and comfortable feeling.

day trip to taichung

Taichung is the most modern city in Taiwan but the streets of Taichung are quite peaceful, the traffic density is moderate, and the sidewalks are spacious for cyclists and pedestrians. Slow cycling shall help you gaze at the streets and people’s activities or you take a rest for a moment.

Visit the impressive buildings (# taichung one day itinerary)

day trip to taichung

Taichung’s development is reflected in high-rise buildings close together with luxurious and unique designs. Along the way, you will encounter many buildings with exciting and impressive methods, one of a kind here.

day trip to taichung

Taiwan is also known as a country that focuses on investing in green space design with many world-famous landscape architects. All the roads I passed were shady with trees, stratified with many large and small trees, and shrubs mixed with small flowers. It is not difficult to see the image of children playing mischievously on the green lawns, and young people meeting and doing weekend activities in large squares. According to my observations, adults and children here are very fond of public spaces and like being close to nature.

day trip to taichung

My cycling route goes through a complex of green spaces including Charlotte Park, Shakeng Park, and Civic Park. These three parks are consecutively located right in the center of Taichung City. Along both sides of the park are high-rise buildings, luxury hotels, and uniquely designed highlight works such as the People’s Council Building, the Government Building, and the famous National Taichung Theater located at the end of the park chain.

day trip to taichung

When it was already dark, and when the street lights were on, Taichung immediately changed into a “new shirt” with bright lights, worthy of the name of urban prosperity in Central Taiwan. I was overwhelmed by the shimmering lighting designs, highlighting each building but creating a harmonious urban picture. At this time, we also finished our cycling journey and dropped off the bike at the National Theater U-bike station and prepared to move to the night market with an empty stomach and tired after cycling all afternoon.
