How to Fill RV Propane Tank or ASME Tank Systems

  • Description

Because it is used for so many appliances, such as the refrigerator, water heater and oven, the ASME tank and its housing combine to be one of the most important features on a motor home, as well as one of the simplest to maintain with regular inspections. So, in preparation for your next road trip, RV maintenance expert Dave Solberg teaches you how to fill RV propane tank systems.

As with most components on an RV, it’s highly important to take your time and the necessary precautions when maintaining and upgrading your ASME tank, especially when preparing to take your vehicle into a filling station. At a professional filling station, technicians who are trained on the appropriate methods for how to fill RV propane tank systems will expect you to have already turned off pilot lights, secured lines and checked vents to avoid dangerous situations. They will also make sure everyone is out of the rig, including pets.

Prior to filling, the technicians will inspect your system for rust, connection issues and any other hindrances that could cause potential damage. As they know how to fill RV propane tank systems of all makes and models, they will also check vents and the site gauge.

For further tips on how to fill RV propane tank systems, your specific model’s user manual can give you guidance on any issues you might run into prior to taking your vehicle into a filling station, including faulty pilot lights, vents and other components. Additionally, while you can rely on your nearest fill station for how to fill RV propane tank systems, you will want to avoid incurring any additional maintenance costs by doing a quick once-over before driving onto the lot. You can save yourself a ton of hassle with a little bit of regular maintenance, and who knows, you might be able to make the minor fix on your own.

The person I spoke with was knowledgeable. she went out of her way to answer my questions, even put me on hold and went to check the motor home for height of step up to shower lip. We are so looking forward to our trip. She also found a closer location for our pickup for the MH.

Vehicles unable to support safe baby car seats - misleading

We booked a Compact Plus RV for a road trip in Utah and San Francisco. Before hiring we contacted Cruise America detailing that our baby would be six months old at the time of travel to check that there were adequate car seat attachments for this (this is rearward facing as is required by law in California) and were assured that there were safe attachments for a suitable car seat. We therefore booked the vehicle (via GoSee). As the trip drew nearer we started shopping for a car seat and quickly realised the system we had been sent was not rearward compatible. We then recontacted Cruise America who confirmed it is NOT possible to fit a rearward facing carseat in their RVs. We requested a full refund including our deposit via GoSee, who were the middle party. This was initially rejected by Cruise America with no explanation given. Only on us complaining that we would make our concerns about their child safety practices public was a refund issued. Staff training and booking processes need urgent review with relation to infant car seats. Rearward facing travel for infants is not only the safest form of travel but is now mandated by law in some states that Cruise America rent vehicles. If pick up or drop off in any of these states is entered at time of booking along with an infant on booking it should not be possible to book. We could very easily have arrived and collected a vehicle that was unsafe and illegal for our baby to travel in, had we not been diligent in double checking prior to travel.

Filthy unit and poor customer service

Could not pick up until 1pm wanted it earlier so paid extra to have RV ready when I arrived. On day of pickup was asked if I could come later because they were not ready yet. When I arrived RV was not ready. RV was dirty and propane tanks bone dry. I was in a hurry and took it for a propane tank fill myself. Camper should have been clean and ready to go with at least some propane in the tanks. We cleaned the RV as soon as we could but could not get the cigarette smell out of the trailer. First evening we could not get the city water to run in the camper. Support was of no help. I called back next day and got a more knowledgeable person who suggested checking out the aerator on the sink. Sure enough, it was clogged with sediment. We ran the lines to try and clear as much of the scale as we could. First chance I could, I attempted to clean the exterior of the camper and realized that much of what was there was caked and baked on without a pressure washer I would not get it clean. I called Cruise America to let them know of the poor quality I received the camper in and got nothing but arguments from their representative. I asked for a supervisor and was told one would call me back. None has called as of yet. I will not be renting from them again.

Excellence Reservation Experience Helped by Robbie Sinteral

I am a BC, Canada resident holding passports from other countries, and I want to reserve an RV in Calgary, AB, Canada. My parents, who also hold non-Canada passports, will come to visit me in BC and go to Calgary to rent an RV for a trip. Since my dad holds a non-Canada driver's license and is of non-Canadian nationality, all the documents required to rent an RV in Canada are very ambiguous. I have called the Cruise Canada reservation centre many times and even called the Vancouver BC office and Calgary AB office to ask about my dad's driver's license question, whether he needs to bring a translation document of his driver's license, and does he is the only person can pay this rent as my dad is the only driver to this RV. I got various conflicting answers after I called reservation specialists and branches, which stressed me as it was my first time renting an RV. I struggled and suffered for 4 days by contacting them and seeking solutions. Robbie Sinteral, one of the reservation specialists in Cruise America/Canada, is the first person and only person so far to write down all of my questions and concerns and take the initiative to help me double-check with his colleagues and get back to me. After only waiting 1 hour, he gets back to me by email with detailed explanations to answer all of my questions. All the information has been confirmed, and all the problems have been solved! He is a very efficient, confident and competent worker with sufficient experience and problem-solving skills. If I need to reserve an RV in the future, I will directly contact Robbie Sinteral (his ext. 7456) as he is a reliable reservation specialist and always provides accurate answers that I can trust. Through this platform, I would like to reiterate my appreciation to Robbie Sinteral; thank you so much! It's my first experience in reserving an RV; I may also share future experiences and thoughts after using the RV after my trip.

Reservation change

I had a reservation for March that I made in the summer. Steven helped me modify that in order to take advantage of Cruise America's 25% discount. Thanks for the help Steven!

Date of experience : November 29, 2023

Hi Walter, we are glad Steven was able to modify your reservation and to take advantage of our promotion. We hope to hear back from you on your next booking soon!

It was fun but the service & exeperince could be a lot smoother

Pros The van was a nice size and easy to drive. Cons Don't bother dumping, we did and was charged for dumping by CA any way - rip off. Don't bother with the bedding and towel kit, it's completely inadequate and we had to buy out own anyway. There was no plug for the sink so the water filled up quickly. It's pretty expensive The fire alarm goes off every time you cook. Not much info about dumping stations etc, we were out of season and dumping was a nightmare. Bed was not comfortable due to sticky/ plastic mattress and we were given a flat sheet that just slid off. Not given a full tank of petrol, so filling up at the end was a bit of a faff.

Renting an RV was far more expensive than I thought it would be. Here are 15 costs to consider before you book.

  • I rented an RV for the first time and found it was a lot more expensive than I thought it would be.
  • I spent almost $2,000 for gas, tolls, and the RV rental, driving over 1,000 miles from New York to Maine and back.
  • My friend and I spent an additional $369 on campsites during the five-day trip.
  • The RV rental company also charged us for mileage, insurance, and generator use.
  • While fees like these are mostly standard, first-time RV renters may not have thought about them before.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories .

Insider Today

RV travel doesn't usually conjure images of luxury and glamour. For the most part, it's associated with budget travel .

However, after recently spending five days driving almost 1,100 miles from New York to Maine and back , I was shocked to find that road tripping in a rented RV can really add up.

Over the course of our trip, my friend and I spent almost $2,000 on the RV rental , gas, and tolls alone. But those weren't the only costs we accrued.

Here are 15 costs we came across that you should consider before you embark on an RV trip of your own.

The RV itself cost $225 a night. Four nights added up to $900.

cruise america propane tank

At 20 feet in length, 12 feet in height, and 7.5 feet wide, the " compact RV " from Cruise America is the smallest motor home the rental company had.

The cost of mileage quickly added up.

cruise america propane tank

Cruise America charged another $0.35 per mile driven . We drove 1,094 miles, which added another $382.90 to our rental charges.

While charging for mileage is standard, you'll want to take this into consideration if you're planning a long trip.

There's a fee for using the generator.

cruise america propane tank

Cruise America, like most RV rental companies (though not all), also charges a generator fee : $8 per day or $3.50 an hour. Luckily, we only used it for a few hours on our first day since we were plugged into the electricity at campsites and bought a USB cigarette lighter charger for our phones while driving.

That fee only set us back $10.30.

However, it's worth noting that the generator runs on gasoline, so using it is a double whammy in terms of cost, as it also eats into your fuel.

There's also a mandatory "supplemental liability" insurance fee.

cruise america propane tank

We paid an optional "zero deductible" insurance fee of $14.95 a day; we weren't messing around as first-time motor-home drivers.

Until I got the bill, I didn't realize that this was on top of a mandatory $15.75 daily "supplemental liability" insurance fee.

Basically, the extra $14.95 upgraded us from a $1,500 deductible policy to a zero-deductible policy , meaning that instead of being responsible for any damage to the vehicle of up to $1,500, we had no financial responsibility for the RV getting damaged or stolen on our watch.

If you don't want to schlep cookware and bedding, you can rent kits, but they cost extra.

cruise america propane tank

Since we were bringing clothes, towels, bedding, food, and water, my friend and I decided to splurge on the $110 kitchen set, or "Vehicle Provisioning Kit," that Cruise America offered, so we could keep luggage to a minimum.

While it allowed us to carry a whole lot less, the kitchen kit was somewhat insufficient, in my opinion, as it lacked bowls. Cruise America notes on its website that items included in the set may vary between locations, but personally I feel like bowls are pretty standard kitchen items, and if you're choosing not to pack certain things it would be helpful to know what you're going to get ahead of time.

If we'd had a car to drive to the rental place, I would have just packed my own cookware and saved the $110.

For another $60 per person, there's also a "Personal Kit" that includes bedding and towels. In the midst of a global pandemic, however, I preferred to bring my own sheets.

We faced a state-mandated daily New Jersey surcharge on rentals.

cruise america propane tank

As part of the RV rental, we had to pay a "daily NJ surcharge."

Looking into this, I found that all motor vehicle rentals in New Jersey of 28 days or less require a $5 a day "domestic security fee," according to the New Jersey Treasury, which cost us another $20 total.

Colorado appears to be the only other state with such a surcharge, as Cruise America's website lists a $2 per day "Colorado road safety fee."

While Cruise America is transparent with these fees, they may come as a surprise to first-time RV renters, so it's worth doing your homework ahead of time.

There was a $7 "environmental fee."

cruise america propane tank

Cruise America's website describes this environmental fee as "designed to offset a wide range of environmental expenses," including "costs associated with the proper disposal of oil, filters, tires, batteries, and shop waste."

While this added to our cost, it was a small price to pay and didn't bother us.

If you don't return the RV with fully emptied tanks, you'll face a dump fee.

cruise america propane tank

If you fail to completely empty your tanks before returning the car, you'll be charged an $85 dump fee.

There's also a cleaning fee of up to $150 if the vehicle isn't returned "in the same condition as it was received." Bypassing that was easy since, a) the RV wasn't really as clean as we would have liked when we got it, and b) we sanitized the hell out of it ourselves.

While prices vary between rental companies, these fees seem to be pretty standard.

You could have to pay a late fee if you don't return your RV on time.

cruise america propane tank

RVs are subject to late fees just like those you might face if returning a rented car after the time it's due back. Our Cruise America location charged a late fee of $25 per hour if you returned your RV past 11 a.m.

You'll probably have to put down an upfront deposit.

cruise america propane tank

While I got the deposit back, it's an upfront charge to keep in mind when budgeting. The deposit for our RV rental was $500.

RVs, especially older models, will guzzle gas.

cruise america propane tank

Don't underestimate how much gas motor homes use — especially since items like the generator also use fuel.

We stopped to fill up four times over the course of 1,094 miles, and spent $235.42, which is almost $0.22 per mile driven.

We had to return the tank half full as received, otherwise, Cruise America would have charged $5.50 per gallon. The compact RV had a 40-gallon fuel tank, so it wouldn't have been cheap.

A lot of the amenities inside RVs run on propane, which you may have to refill at some point.

cruise america propane tank

RVs use propane for their refrigerators, stoves, and hot water, so, depending on how long you're renting for, the number of hot showers you take, and how often you cook on the stove, you'll probably have to refill the propane tank at some point.

Refilling a 30-pound propane tank costs between $80 and $100 at  Camping World , which sells camping gear and RVs at 120 locations across the US. And according to RV Blogger , which cited data from the US Energy Information Administration , refilling your propane tank at a refilling station can cost between $2.50 to $4 a gallon.

Since we only used the stove once and took one hot shower (we used the camping facilities or took cold showers), we didn't have to pay for propane.

Our campsites, which were quite nice and near popular tourist spots like Portland and Acadia National Park, cost between $60 and $110 a night.

cruise america propane tank

While you could probably spend the night for free in a Walmart parking lot or "boondocking" — which means usually free camping in the RV community by not using water and electrical hookups provided at RV parks — as novices, we wanted the safety net of a campsite and friendly neighbors we might need to ask for help.

Campground costs depend on the amenities they offer (some have pools and ocean views) and their proximity to popular attractions, but, according to Camper Resort , they generally cost at least $45 a night and up for RVs.

Tolls are more expensive for larger vehicles and certain RVs.

cruise america propane tank

In New York/New Jersey, the cost of a regular vehicle passing through the Lincoln Tunnel without an E-Z Pass is $16 — but a six-wheeled motor home can cost as much as $66, according to Port Authority NJ .

Thankfully, our RV was small, but we still ended up spending $21.50 on tolls driving from New Jersey to Maine and back. Due to COVID, however, many of the tolls we passed though said they'd send charges via mail, rather than have a person sitting in the toll booth, so the grand total might be higher.

You'll probably have to buy a few things you forgot to pack.

cruise america propane tank

While I congratulated myself on my foresight when I thought to pack dish soap, paper towels, and toilet paper, we ended up buying things like a lighter for the stove, a candle to be able to eat outside, hand soap, gallons of water, firewood, and a cigarette lighter charger, which also added up.

Jacqueline and Mac at the Newark location are incredibly helping and made the renting process a breeze. If i ever need to rent another rv or camper again I'll be coming back to this location! In all honesty they both deserve a raise!

Photo of Liezl D.

First time on an RV and we were in for a surprise. When we got the RV the staff was nice however was just freshly hired therefore didn't really show us how to hook things up or how things are operated (not his fault, it's the companies lack of training). First there was a beeping alarm that went off every 15 mins on the road which we had to run back to the sleeping cabin and reset it. So then to solve that we had to turn off the fridge/freezer unit, so there went our food! Then the stove wouldn't stay on so luckily we brought our own portable stoves. Then when we hooked up the city water line no water was coming out. So we tried the reserved water. Welp when we turned on the water pump to use the reserve water, it started leaking into the storage area and the main cabin. Therefore the whole trip we didn't have water- couldn't use the sink, the shower, nor the toilet! When returning the RV they only refunded us back a measly $160 when we paid close to $1,500 to rent it, and said that's the best they could do. This was a horrible experience! The only good thing was their 24/7 live agent hotline but even that they told us to get it serviced ourselves and they will reimburse us. We might as well have just gone tent camping. Won't rent from this company again.

Photo of Pip C.

Our first experience renting an RV with full amenities turned into a disappointing ordeal. Despite the promising features, we encountered several issues that significantly impacted our trip. The water pump began leaking upon activation, saturating our belongings in both the storage area and cabin room. This rendered the sink, shower, and toilet unusable, forcing us to go without essential amenities. While the 24/7 agent was helpful, their suggestion for immediate servicing wasn't feasible for our road trip plans. Furthermore, there was a noticeable lack of communication and training from the staff, exacerbating our frustrations. The fridge/freezer, running on propane, continuously spoiled our food, necessitating constant shutdowns during our journey to avoid disruptive beeping every 15 minutes. Overall, our experience fell far short of expectations, leaving us deeply disappointed with our rental experience.

PLEASE READ IF CONSIDERING BUYING !!! So I bought from this location almost a year ago , when I tell you that this place is an absolute scam rip off artist it's horrible . So I bought an RV ( refurbished) and it has been issue after issue , I'm exhausted and SUPER disappointed that they would sale this to me with all the issues . So let's start from here , when I bought it both batteries ( coach battery & Engine battery ) was both over 4 years old , first time it got cold both died . $360 for both Next , complete water system in the coach failed , multiple water line breaks , Coach water pump was leaking in multiple locations , when investigated they didn't run the water lines correct and it looked as if they had the same issues prior $ 1700 RV has been kept in a indoor garage ,,, took it out for the first time in the rain to take a drive ,,, ALL 3 skylights ( over bed , over driver cabin bed & bathroom ALL leaking severely ). After investigating it was never siliconed correctly, they did a half a$$ job sealing it just to make it ready to go , it was an absolute mess on the roof , service person was amazed on how bad the job was ... $1200 First time using the gas , turned gas on and it was leaking , entire gas system needed to be replaced , turned it on and all I could smell was gas ,,, replaced everything $500 . We have put barley 1k miles on this thing and it is an absolute mess .... I wish I could speak to someone higher up but I'm sure they don't care .... I urge ANYONE looking for a used RV run for your life in the opposite direction from this place ...

After reading all the bad reviews, a lot of which seem to be from other locations, I guess my advice is to insist on getting a newer vehicle and inspect everything before driving off. We had amazing customer service (shout out to Robbie in the Newark, CA office!) at pick-up. He was very informative and helpful with all kinds of tips and information. We were in and out quickly and even got to take off in our vehicle an hour early. The guy who showed us everything on the rv told us that the sensor in the black water (toilet) tank was not working right, it was empty but always showed at 1/3 full bc it likely had a piece of toilet paper blocking the sensor. That was fine, at least we knew about it. Also the propane tank always read emptier than it was even when it was full. The steering wheel also pulled to the left but it corrected itself when we put air in the tire. We explained these issues when checking it back in and the guys were very nice about it and didn't try to say it was our fault. The rv had about 20k miles and everything else was working great and nice and clean. We really enjoyed our road trip of about 1400 miles thru Oregon and the Northern California coast. Rv'ing is glamping in my opinion!! You roll up to your campsite, lock the doors and you're ready to go explore and have fun! No unloading and setting up for hours only to have to break it all down again. Just arrive and enjoy. Hungry? Double burner propane stove is ready to cook whatever you want. There's a microwave if you're lazy. 2 sinks, hot shower, comfy bed. Fridge and freezer with lots of room. We were eating ice cream in the middle of a forest! Yes, it's expensive to rent an rv, but if you're going on vacation and planning to spend time in nature, THIS IS IT FOLKS!!! I never want to camp like a peasant again!! My tips- Download Google maps so you have details when offline. You'd be surprised how little phone/ internet coverage America has outside of the cities. Look around inside the rv before buying supplies. We found a broom and cups, bowls and plates we didn't know about. Most things in the rv are run by propane. The generator is $3.50 per hour to run but that's only used for the microwave when you're not plugged into power. Make sure you feel/ hear the fridge door "click" into lock mode before driving off lol! Secure stuff before driving and put something under the microwave plate so it doesn't jiggle and make a lot of noise when moving. Also secure everything including the spare tire for a quieter smoother ride. Buy rainex for your windshield and windows and take this step for better visibility when driving. Your windows will get gross on the roads and this is a safety hazard. Have someone get out of the rv to help with parking bc there's no rear camera.

this place sucks. services members are terribly slow and not willing to work with customers in anything close to a timely manner. I had an appointment to pick up my RV at 11 and now I am being told I will be waiting here till 2pm. do yourself a favor don't rent here.

This review is for the Newark, CA location. I noticed some other reviews left here were for other locations besides the one for this listing. I have rented twice from this location (Compact Plus model) and have had positive experiences both times. The staff are friendly. They walked me through every single thing that has an on/off switch you'd need to use for living in and upkeeping the RV during a trip. They switch everything on to ensure it works, including both the heater and AC. They explain how the waste valves work. They make sure the water tank and propane are full. The RVs are very clean and on both of my trips I had no issues with anything malfunctioning. (Compare this to my rental from another RV rental chain "The Mountain" where the rep was personality-less and I had to ask her how to turn stuff off/on, the rear cam immediately stopped working, fridge barely worked, side mirror was broken, and more!) An RV has a lot of little parts that can go wrong but I think Cruise America did a good job of maintaining the rentals I had. The only annoying thing is that they do not refill the gas so it's whatever the last person returned it with. I got mine 1/4 full so had to immediately get gas nearby. However they were upfront about this and only expected the return to be 1/4 full at the end of my trip.

Sadly I can't give a half star but our experience with Cruise America can only be described as completely awful . If you are looking to rent an RV, I would choose almost anyone else you can find- literally build an RV yourself if you have to instead of using them. Cruise America pulled off the rare feat of making our 7 hour trip a 12-hour nightmare both ways. The RV we got should have never been allowed off the lot and the only logical reason it could have possibly passed their inspection is either complete laziness, outright stupidity, a greed for money despite putting in no effort, or most likely a mixture of all 3. The alignment was so bad in this truck that it tore the right wheel to shreds. When we called for help, we were basically given a shrug emoji and told to fend for ourselves because, and I quote the employee here, "it's Sunday". So, if you are taking a trip, make sure it's not on a Sunday because that is apparently a reason to not give a shit anymore for employees all over the country, despite running a retail travel service where people are constantly traveling on Sunday. We were fortunate enough to make it home on the spare; by the time we got back, it was on it's last legs. Basically, we were given an unsafe truck to hurtle at 70 MPH down the highway with no oversight from the inspection team and zero help from the company once their shit product failed. It was most likely my worst retail renting experience of my life. Do not use this company ever, I guarantee you it will be a terrible time and whatever you do do not use the bathroom in these, as it doesn't work. Here is a list of things you can do besides using one of these terrible RVs from the worst RV-rental company in America: 1) Fly yourself- I mean literally flap your arms like wings 2) Walk even if it takes you 6 months 3) Get shot out of a cannon and pray you land at your destination 4) Don't go on your trip- missing it will be better than dealing with these chuckleheads 5) Get a root canal and have your periodontist travel you in your chair to the destination during the procedure 6) Get yourself in a human centipede situation and run down to your destination 7) Strap yourself to the front of a train and hope for the best Seriously, this company is the fucking worst. DO. NOT. USE. THEM.

Cruise America has business practices that should not be allowed within this country. They take a $500 deposit and then miraculously there are surcharges and fees that take up nearly that entire amount. And you have no way of arguing them because they already have your money and their customer service is non-existent. I had the absolute worst experience renting an RV that I have had on vacation ever. The RV I had was new but it was like driving a wooden wheeled car across railroad tracks for 700 miles. Then on top of that, they charged me for 2 days over what I used the RV for because we returned it early because it was such a horrendous experience. So they could double dip and rent it out again and make money on the same days I was not getting refunded for. they charges "housekeeping" fees of $350 even thought my wife and I wiped down that entire RV before turning it in. When asked for proof of what was dirty, there only response was to give us $150 certificate to be used within the next 2 years. I would never use it because I would never rent an RV. And if I did, I would not do it through them. It took me 2 weeks just to get a response form their billing department. The just over another week before I got their response that they will not be refunding me anything. Do yourself a favor and rent an SUV or something and pitch a tent in some haunted woods. Trust me you will have a better experience and cheaper because you will not have them scam your deposit out of you. I will never do business with them ever again and recommend anyone thinking about it to think of alternative ways to travel for your vacation.

TL;DR I would really not recommend using them. First you should note they provide the most basic of units; our unit did not even had Bluetooth so we could hear the GPS. Two hours into our trip, the left mirror broke, meaning, it started spinning on it's access with no way to secure it. Have you ever tried driving a huge 30 foot truck with no way on knowing what is happening on your left? I would recommend against it. I called roadside assistance and requested help, they would not send someone over despite the risk to my family; I had to drive over 40 miles to a small town and had to fix my mirror with duct tape. The next day I called and asked for a replacement unit, they asked me to wait 30 minutes (without leaving the camp) and did not call me back, I called again, they asked for 15 mote minutes, and did to call back; this went on for 4 hours, finely at 11 am, I decided I will not wait anymore and started driving; they never called back. I called the next day asking for a manager, they promised one will get back to, it never happened. A few other thigs - The furnace did not work, try to imagine a family of 5 in Oregon at night, 35F / 2C without heating. Milledge was terrible, 15 Gallons per 100 miles The truck itself was so loud, it was almost impossible to talk in it when you drive. All and all, very far from a pleasant experience for a trip that we planned for two years, saved our money to for years and for a unit that cost thousands.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

cruise america propane tank

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

cruise america propane tank

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

cruise america propane tank

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

cruise america propane tank

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

cruise america propane tank

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

cruise america propane tank

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
