How to Visit Charyn Canyon National Park in Kazakhstan

This post is a travel guide about Charyn Canyon National Park in Kazakhstan. One of the most beautiful national parks close to Almaty in the southeastern region of the country where the steppes meet the Tien Shan mountains.

We drive through the endless open steppes with different colours of green. Even as we pay the mandatory entrance fee for the Charyn Canyon National Park there is nothing to suggest the dramatic change of scenery that awaits us.

It is my second visit to the Charyn Canyon National Park, so I knew, but still I am impressed by the sight of the canyon that suddenly opens up below. A whole different world of strange red rock formations that are the result of million years of erosion by wind and water.

The road to the Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan

Why visit Charyn Canyon National Park

Even though the Charyn Canyon is much smaller than the Grand Canyon in the US, it looks very similar and is equally impressive. The canyon follows the Charyn river for about 50 kilometers. The walls of the canyon reach up to 300 meters at some point and the colours range from red to brown, yellow and black.

It’s a geologists dream come true with sedimentary rocks that are about twelve million years old.  There is also a large variety of flora and fauna with over 1000 of plants of which 50 are extremely rare and endemic to the area. Wildlife includes foxes, hares, gerbils, eagles, pheasants, snakes and lizards.

Most people visit the Charyn Canyon National Park as a day trip from Almaty . It is indeed one of the most spectacular places in this region to see the beautiful nature of Kazakhstan . However, on a day trip you only get to see the tip of the iceberg. The area is massive and there is so much to see and explore that you could spend days here.

Having some extra time allows you to go off the beaten path. You can go on extended hikes to see different valleys where few people come. Or you can go wild water rafting and spot some of its wildlife.

There are several options to stay overnight in the Charyn Canyon. You can go camping, stay in a wooden cabin or even sleep in a yurt if you like. To fully experience this place I can strongly recommend you to do so, if only to see the beautiful sunset and the dark starry night. The daytrippres will be gone and most likely you will have the canyon to yourself.

Yes, you can take the standard day tours from Almaty. They are a cheap and easy way to get a sneak peek. If this is all the time and money you have, they are definetly worth it. But paying a bit more, definetly pays off in the Charyn Canyon.

What to expect on a Charyn Canyon tour

My first visit to the Charyn Canyon was on such a standard tour in which we visited the canyon as part of a trip to the Kolsai lakes . It took us four hours driving through the endless open steppes before we reached the turn off point.

On my first visit in 2016 the road to the entrance of the canyon was still unpaved. This is where almost all tour groups drop you off. They give you just enough time to walk the 3 kilometers through the Valley of Castles and back.

I must say that we were lucky, because we left early from Almaty. We had a long day as we needed to continue our journey to the Kolsai Lakes. We arrived well before the tourbuses arrived and the valley was so beautiful and quiet. When we walked back it was already getting more busy.

Even though it was a short visit of only 3 hours, it left a deep impression on me. It tasted like more and on my second visit I decided to spend more time here. We rented our own car and decided to check out some of the other viewpoints and canyons.

Places to visit in the Charyn Canyon National Park

Valley of castles.

The valley of castles is the most famous canyon in the Charyn Canyon and it is where you will most likely end up if you go on a tour. The road to the entrance point is now paved all the way up to the viewpoint and there is an office where you have to pay an entrance fee.

You can walk 2 kilometers through the valley of castles all the way up to the river and the Eco park. There is a small restaurant and the eco park also has several accomodation options including cosy yurts.

The valley of castles is a beautiful and easy walk. It is the only obvious hiking trail in the canyon. Other hiking opportunities are there, but because the trails are not marked it is up to you to explore around.

Other Charyn Canyons

Most people know only about the valley of castles, but there are in fact three more canyons inside the National Park. There is the Temirlik canyon (iron canyon), the Uzunbulak canyon (yellow canyon or moon canyon) and the Bestamak Canyon (red canyon).

You will need your own transport by four wheel drive and there are no established walking trails. You are free to wander around and explore on your own. Just come well prepared as there are no facilities. Your effort will be well rewarded though.

Charyn Canyon viewpoints

If you have your own transport and you are visiting the Charyn Canyon as part of a bigger trip including the Kolsai Lakes and Altyn Emel you shouldn’t miss some of the viewpoints along the road.

There is of course the viewpoint where you enter the Valley of Castles, but there are other view points too. They are much less obvious and require no entrance fees. They are right next to the road and worth a short stop with your car.

Check Google maps, because most viewpoints are marked on them. If you drive from the Charyn Canyon to the Kolsai Lakes you will pass a beautiful viewpoint further down the road that looks into the black canyon. On the way to Altyn Emel is another viewpoint where you can even hike down to the Charyn river.

Things to do in the Charyn Canyon National Park

Hiking in the charyn canyon.

The easiest hike in the Charyn Canyon is the 2-3 kilometer hike through the valley of castles. This is the only established hiking trail in the park, but inofficial trails are plenty. If you are an experienced hiker you can explore around. Just be prepared, because there will be no facilities beyond the valley of castles.

Rafting in the Charyn canyon

Some companies offer Rafting tours on the Charyn river. Even though I haven’t done this myself I can imagine this is a great way to see the Charyn Canyon from a different perspective.

Charyn Canyon Wildlife

You must be very lucky, but the Charyn Canyon is home to a variety of animals. There are more than 100 bird species and 32 mammals that include eagles, pheasants, mountain goats, foxes, hares, gerbils, snakes and lizards.

How to travel to the Charyn Canyon

Public transport to the charyn canyon.

If you want to go on your own, you can take a shared taxi to Kegen/Saty (5 dollars) and ask them to drop you at the turn off for the Charyn Canyon. From there it is a 12 km hike through the grasslands, without any shade, to the entrance of the Valley of Castles.

To get back you have to hike the 12 km back to the main road and then hitchhike a ride back to Almaty. Keep in mind that hitchhiking in Kazakhstan is not free and you are expected to contribute a small amount towards the fuel costs. Read more about hitchhiking in Kazakhstan in my Backpacking Kazakhstan travel guide .

Cheap day tours to the Charyn Canyon

There are several companies offering cheap day tours to the canyon, especially in the weekends. They are available from $25 onwards . Take into account that it can get pretty busy in the valley of castles with these tourgroups and they will only give you enough time to do the 3 kilometer hike through the valley of castles.

Renting a car or private taxi

Renting a car or a private taxi to get to the Charyn Canyon is not the cheapest option. However, if you can find other travellers to share the costs with, it is also not as expensive as you might think. The biggest advantage is that you have much more freedom to choose when and where to visit the Charyn Canyon.

If you are renting a car you could make a bigger roadtrip around Almaty including some of the best national parks in Kazakhstan , such as the Kolsai lakes National Park and the Altyn Emel National Park . Check my post with a one week Almaty roadtrip .

Renting a Car to the Charyn Canyon

There are several agencies in Almaty where you can rent a car. Make sure they allow you to travel outside of the city.

I often get the question if you need a 4WD to visit Charyn Canyon. My answer is no, but there are a few things to consider. The road to the entrance to the Valley of Castles is paved, but if you want to explore beyond the valley of castles, the roads are more adventurous.

Another reason to hire a 4WD or car with high clearance is when you plan to combine a road trip to the Charyn Canyon with the Kolsai Lakes and Altyn Emel National Park. I rented a car with high clearance and visited Issyk Lake, Kolsai Lakes, Lake Kaindy and Altyn Emel National Park as well.

Charyn Canyon National Park Travel Tips

Where to sleep in the charyn canyon.

Eco park : The Eco park is the only accomodation option in the Charyn Canyon with several yurts (40,000 tenge for 8 persons) and wooden cabins (14000 tenge for 2 persons). It is at the end of the valley of castles. The 3 kilometer walk to the eco park is very scenic, but if you prefer not to walk they can pick you up with an eco park taxi.

Camping : You can go camping in the Charyn Canyon for which you need to pay an additional 350 tenge per tent entrance fee. There are some cleared and designated camping spaces near the river. Remember, that outside of the summer it can get very cold during the nights.

Where to eat in the Charyn Canyon

The only place to eat in the Charyn Canyon is at the Eco Park. The menu is limited to what they have available at the moment you are there. Don’t expect anything more than shaslyck, plov or laghman. Prices are relatively high compared to a budget restaurant in Almaty.

If you want to keep things cheap, it is best to bring enough food for a picnic lunch and dinner from Almaty. Even if you plan to use the restaurant, it is not a bad idea to bring enough water and snacks with you.

When to visit the Charyn Canyon

There are two things to consider about when to visit the Charyn Canyon. First of all, the season and second of all the days of the week.

Let’s start with the seasons. Winters are icy cold and summers scorching hot. The best months to visit the Charyn Canyon are from April till June and from September till October.

Then lets look at the days of the week. The cheapest way to travel to the Charyn Canyon is still by a standard day tour from Almaty. However, these are often only in the weekends. So, if you are looking for the cheapest way to see the Charyn Canyon, make sure you join a bus tour on a saturday or sunday.

However, saturdays and sundays are very crowded in the Charyn Canyon. If you want to escape the crowds and you have the means to travel there on your own make sure you avoid the weekends and go during the week.

Safety in the Charyn Canyon

The Charyn Canyon is safe to visit, but it is good to keep in mind that it is a remote part of the country. Outside of the Valley of castles there are few facilities. If you plan to do some hiking, I recommend to bring enough water, snacks and a mini first aid kit.

In summer it can get very hot. To avoid heat stroke it is very important to bring enough water with you. Even better is a water filter system so that you don’t need to use plastic. To protect yourself from the sun also bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. There is little shade so it’s easy to get a sunburn even in spring or autumn.

If you stay overnight bring some warmer clothes as well. It can get cold during the night.

Charyn Canyon Packing list

Sturdy shoes or hiking shoes : Proffesional hiking boots are not necessary. However, the trails can be rocky and require a good pair of shoes.

Sun protection : The sun can be pretty strong and there is little shade. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect you from the sun

Enough money : There are no ATM’s in the Charyn Canyon so make sure you bring enough money with you.

Snacks : There are no general stores. It is best to carry some snacks with you.

Water purification system : Bring enough water with you. There is no need to add to the plastic waste problem. You can easily fill up your bottle with water from the river. However, do use a filter.

Toilet paper : Most toilets are of the drop down variety with no toilet paper in sight.

The Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan

Sustainable Travel in Charyn Canyon National Park

The Charyn Canyon is in a remote part of Kazakhstan, but sees more tourists every year. While Tourism is a welcome source of income for the local community it can also have negative consequences. Traveling sustainably in the Charyn Canyon, involves conscious choices that minimize your environmental impact in these remote and pristine ecosystems.

Stay in small scale sustainable hotels : It is better to stay in locally-owned guesthouses or homestays to support the local economy directly. These accommodations often have a more positive impact on the environment compared to large hotels. I can recommend staying in a homestay for an authentic cultural experience. You might want to bring a small book with pictures of your family to break the ice.

You can try to look for guesthouses or homestays that prioritizes sustainable practices. That said, environmental awareness is still low. It’s up to you to use water sparsely, turn off lights, air conditioning, and heating when leaving your accommodation.

Leave no Trace principle : When hiking in the Charyn Canyon, stick to designated trails to protect the fragile ecosystems. Straying off the marked paths can cause soil erosion and damage to plant life. If you are lucky enough to spot wildlife, observe quietly from a distance to prevent disruption to their habitats and help maintain their natural behaviors.

I encourage you to take all your trash back with you and dispose of it responsibly. In other words, leave no trace of your visit. Even better is when you bring something to pick up any of the trash that other people left behind.

To avoid single-use plastics, invest in reusable items. For example, you can bring your own water bottle with a filter that you can refill at your accomodation. At last, use biodegradable and eco-friendly personal care products to minimize pollution of water sources.

Respect the culture : Besides environmental concerns it is also important to respect the culture. Kazakhstan is an Islamic country with a nomadic past that is just opening up to tourism. Therefore, learn about the local customs and traditions beforehand and be mindful of your behavior.

People will appreciate it, if you dress modestly, especially at religious sites. Learning a few basic phrases in Kazakh or Russian, can go a long way in building meaningful connections and to learn more about the local culture. Not everybody is happy to have their picture taken. When in doubt, ask permission.

Hi! May I know how much is eco park taxi if I want them to pick me up rather than walk? Thanks in advance!

I don’t know what they currently charge. You can contact them by e-mail: [email protected]

Hi Ellis Thanks for sharing a detailed note on your visit. It is very helpful and well documented. I intend to visit the canyon around 19th of October and am looking for accommodations within the canyon (eco park) as well as outside. We don’t want to camp and would like to stay in a 2 bed private accommodation. The eco park website cannot be accessed presently. Would you have a number accessible by whatsapp to make enquiries or suggestions for alternative options? Thank You

A guide to Charyn Canyon Kazakhstan

HOME | KAZAKHSTAN

A complete guide to charyn canyon, kazakhstan.

Part of Kazakhstan’s famous Golden Triangle , the time-worn Charyn Canyon is deeply engraved in the dusty soil of the Kazakh steppe.

Situated at roughly a 3 hour’s drive from Almaty , this impressive national park is without question among the absolute best things to see and do within the country, with the extraordinary Valley of Castles at the heart of it all.

For roughly 12 million years, wind and water eroded several valleys out of the dry desert terrain, shaping it into the otherworldly deep red-coloured sandstone landscape we admire today.

Walking the scenic Valley of Castles has become a popular point of call to both locals and travellers alike, and hence it was something that topped my bucket list for Kazakhstan.

In this in-depth guide, I’ll share all the key information on how to visit the Charyn Canyon National Park, both independently or as part of a guided tour – plus all the essentials to make the most out of your time here.

Charyn Canyon Almaty Kazakhstan

Where is Charyn Canyon

Located roughly 220 kilometres east of the capital city Almaty, Charyn Canyon is nestled in the eponymous Charyn Canyon National Park at around 3 hour’s drive from the city centre of Almaty.

Also, the national park itself is located quite deserted in the heart of a large steppe at only a stone’s throw away from the Chinese border.

Charyn Canyon Kazakhstan

Charyn Canyon tickets | Entrance fee 2022

At the moment of writing – August 2022, the entrance fee to Charyn Canyon National Park is 727 Tenge per person, which comes to roughly €1,50.

Before entering the valley, you’ll stumble upon a small kiosk and an entrance gate, where an officer will ask for your documents (passport and driving license).

Charyn Canyon entrance fee

How to get to Charyn Canyon

As with most places in Kazakhstan, it can be quite a challenge to get to the Charyn Canyon National Park.

Fortunately, I was able to drive with a local friend, which made the journey to Charyn pretty straightforward.

Since I realize that this option isn’t available for everyone, I’ve listed down some of the best options to get to Charyn Canyon.

JOIN A DAY TOUR | By far the easiest way to explore Charyn Canyon is by joining a private day trip from Almaty.

While these guided tours are relatively expensive by Kazakh standards, I believe it is still a great way to see Kazakhstan’s unique canyons, which are often mentioned in the same breath as Arizona’s Grand Canyon.

Though it’s completely possible to book a tour from one of the tourist companies in Almaty, I’d highly recommend sorting out a tour online and in advance.

For those interested, this full-day private tour of Charyn Canyon has great reviews, air-conditioned transport and grants enough time to explore the canyon – plus it offers pickup and dropoff service at your hotel in Almaty.

BUS | Alternatively, you can also jump aboard a bus tour organized by the Ecotourism Information Resource Center (EIRC) .

If you’re keen to visit with them, a visit to Charyn Canyon comes for as little as 6.000 KZT (€12,5) per person. After meeting with the guide, the tour takes around 14 hours to complete, with half of that time spent on the bus.

Having said that, this option is actually pretty good, especially for those travelling on a budget.

However, do keep in mind that these bus tours run only in the weekends, when Charyn Canyon is teeming with local Kazakh tourists and international tourists alike.

CAR | Charyn Canyon is located in Almaty’s famous golden triangle, where you will also find some of southeast Kazakhstan’s other major highlights, including Kaindy Lake, Kolsai Lakes and the Altyn-Emel National Park.

Since public transportation is limited and tours are often on the higher price end, renting a car is by far the most convenient option – plus you have all the freedom to craft your Almaty region itinerary and travel at your own pace.

It is for this exact reason that I highly recommend renting a car here.

If you’re planning to visit Charyn Canyon by car, I suggest combining your visit with both Kaindy Lake and the Kolsai Lakes .

If you’re planning of renting a car yourself, make sure you check out R entalcars.com , as they have a broad range of cars on offer, additional insurance options, and brilliant overall service.

Upon arrival at the Charyn Canyon National Park, you’ll have free parking facilities.

What to see and do in Charyn Canyon National Park

Take a leisurely walk through the valley of castles.

If you’re anything like me, then I’m pretty confident that you can’t wait to venture into the valley when you see it for the first time from the parking lot.

Trust me, I felt the same.

As soon as you follow the steep path downwards, you’ll be flanked by towering canyon walls that have been shaped slowly over the course of 12 million years – which is pretty damn awesome if you think about it.

The 4-kilometre ‘out-and-back’ trail runs straight through the valley and takes you along countless impressive rock structures before you end up at the river and the Eco park.

While the trail is not officially marked, the Valley of Castle is pretty straightforward to navigate and takes around 3 hours to complete if you take it easy.

Charyn Canyon Almaty

Overlook the Valley of Castles

Possibly one of the most iconic sights in the region, the Valley of Castles is a remarkable sight to behold, especially if you see it from the edge of one of the many viewpoints.

Carved deep into the Kazakh steppe, this picturesque valley is often referred to as a scaled-down version of the Grand Canyon, making it by far the most popular point of call within the Charyn Canyon National Park.

Valley of Castles, Charyn Canyon

Go rafting on the Charyn River

Those with the time and flexibility to explore the national park a bit more thoroughly will be thrilled to read that it’s also possible to go rafting on the Charyn River.

Starting at the Valley of Castles, the Charyn River runs between enormous time-worn canyon walls and will lead you all the way to the Kerbulak Gorge.

While I didn’t go rafting myself, I can imagine that it’s quite an adventure as well as a great way to experience the Charyn Canyon from an alternative perspective.

It’s good to note that you should arrange your rafting tour prior to your visit to the national park.

Should you choose to join a rafting tour, make sure you check out Silk Road Explore .

Rafting on the Charyn Canyon

Spent the night at Chary Canyon

Likely more of an option for the more adventurous souls, but it’s completely possible to spend the night within the Charyn National Park.

At the end of the Valley of Castles and right next to the Charyn River, you will stumble upon a small Eco park offering several yurts (45.000 KZT for groups of up to 10 people) and a handful of wooden bungalows (14.000 KZT for 2 people) that you can rent for the night.

Additionally, you can also set up camp at the designated camping spots near the river if you pay an additional 350 KZT at the entrance of the park.

While it is said that there’s a small restaurant at the site, I didn’t see it during my visit, so I’d recommend bringing your own food just to be sure.

Where to stay in Charyn Canyon

Take a short detour to the Black Valley

If you simply can’t get enough of all the dramatic landscapes found in this region, I’m sure that you’ll be pretty happy with this additional stop.

While it’s slightly off the route and not officially part of the Charyn Canyon National Park, the Black Valley is a remarkable natural spectacle of its own accord and definitely worthy of your time.

Standing at the edge of the valley, it will become pretty clear that it’s an otherworldly place; to me, it even displays similarities to landscapes that are commonly found in Iceland.

Unfortunately, visiting the Black Valley isn’t included in most of the tours, so you might want to grab yourself a rental if you’re heading to this neck of the woods.

Charyn Canyon | Essential information

Best time of year to visit charyn canyon.

The Almaty region is known to experience scorching heat during the summer and freezing colds during the winter, and for that exact reason, I highly recommend visiting Charyn Canyon during the shoulder months of April – June , and September – October .

Not only is the temperature far more convenient during these periods, but the region is also far more accessible by car or as part of a guided tour from Almaty.

I personally visited Charyn Canyon early in November and was blessed with excellent circumstances during my visit, as well as the luxury to have this amazing place completely to myself.

When to visit Charyn Canyon

Best time of day to hike Charyn Canyon

Given that Charyn Canyon is around 3 hour’s drive away from Almaty, it is best to depart from Almaty early in the morning, with the goal to arrive at the national park before noon.

Also, since Charyn Canyon is deemed one of Kazakhstan’s most famous landmarks, it becomes pretty busy during the weekends, especially throughout the local holidays .

Therefore, I believe it’s best to visit Charyn Canyon on a weekday when it’s far less overrun by local visitors and foreigners alike.

However, if you don’t have access to a car or look to visit Charyn Canyon on a budget, the cheapest way to visit the canyon is by joining a day tour from Almaty that runs on Saturday and Sunday.

Best time to visit Charyn Canyon

What to pack for Charyn Canyon

As with any adventure in this neck of the woods, it’s essential that you travel with the right type of kit.

To avoid surprises when travelling to this remote corner of the country, I’d highly suggest packing the following items:

REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE | One travel essential that I carry with me at all times is the Grayl Geopress . This reusable water purification bottle allows me to fill up water from nearly every water source, making it one of my best investments to date.

HIKING BOOTS OR A GOOD PAIR OF SNEAKERS | The terrain at Charyn Canyon can be a bit rough and dodgy. While you don’t necessarily need hiking boots, I’d highly recommend wearing a sturdy pair of sneakers.

SNACKS | Since there are not many facilities at Charyn Canyon, I suggest bringing lunch and a few snacks to fuel your adventures within the national park.

CASH | Even though it’s difficult to find stores and restaurants in this area, it’s always good to carry enough cash with you just to be sure.

SUN PROTECTION | Charyn Canyon is fully exposed to the sun, and for that reason, I’d strongly recommend packing sunscreen and a hat.

A CAMERA | It is safe to say that Charyn Canyon is one of Kazakhstan’s finest natural sceneries, so you’re going to snap loads of photos while you’re there. Make sure you see what’s in my camera bag .

Charyn Canyon is part of Kazakhstan’s famous Golden Triangle , which also includes the Altyn-Emel National Park and the Kolsai Lakes .

Additionally, you should also not overlook the incredibly scenic Kaindy Lake just a few kilometres away from Saty.

Stay safe in Kazakhstan | Travel insurance

Since travelling in Kazakhstan is all about hiking and off-the-beaten path adventures, I recommend everyone to sort out adequate travel insurance before setting out on their own adventure.

Where we prefer that everything runs smoothly during our travels, something unfortunate can happen at any moment, whether it’s a hiking injury, stolen goods or an accident on the road.

For travel insurance, I use Heymondo , as they offer full covid-19 coverage, as well as a handy app with 24-hour medical assistance. Make sure you check it out – readers of WTSW receive 5% off any insurance policy too. Additionally, I also recommend World Nomads .

Blown away by the beauty of Charyn Canyon – The Complete Travel Guide

This travel guide covers all the information you need to know about visiting the Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan, including how much it costs, how to get to Charyn Canyon from Almaty, where to stay, what to do and how to prepare for this trip.

After weeks of crossing the endless wide-open plains and deserts of Western and Central Kazakhstan , we were up for a big surprise when we visited the Southeast region of Kazakhstan.

This region, stretching from Almaty (Kazakhstan’s former capital city) to Lake Balkhash, is known as Zhetisu, meaning Land of Seven Rivers.

It’s one of Kazakhstan’s most varied regions: from semi-deserts to lush greenery and dense forests, from Grand Canyon-like rock formations to waterfalls and lakes fed by the glacial meltwater of the snow-peaked Tien Shan mountain range.

This part of the country is nicknamed ‘the Golden Triangle’ for its trio of major natural attractions: the Charyn Canyon (also written as Sharyn Canyon), the Kolsai Lakes and the Altyn-Emel National Park.

In this post, I focus on visiting the Charyn Canyon near Almaty.

If you have a few days to explore the area, I would also suggest you read my complete travel guide to the Kolsai lakes and the nearby sunken forest of Kaindy lake .

Exploring Charyn Canyon – the Grand Canyon’s little Kazakh brother

The Charyn Canyon (or Sharyn Canyon) is part of the Charyn Canyon National Park and stretches 154km along the Charyn River, one of the deepest rivers of the Northern Tien Shan mountains.

For more than 12 million years, wind, water and sand sculpted Charyn’s red sandstone to form the wonderful shapes and shades that vary from deep orange to light brown.

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles - Journal of Nomads

Some of the cliffs resemble fantastical figures, the reason why some parts of the canyon are also called the Valley of Castles, the Devil’s Gorge and the Ghosts Gorge.

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles - Journal of Nomads

The multicolored rock layers are the product of different stages of sediment deposits, from volcanic lava rocks at the bottom to red debris on top, deposited by the rivers that once flowed through.

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles - Journal of Nomads

The Charyn Canyon consists of 5 different canyons: the Valley of Castles, the Temirlik Canyon, the Yellow Canyon, the Red Canyon and the Bestamak Canyon.

Charyn Canyon - Valley of Castles - Journal of Nomads

The Valley of Castles is the most famous part of the Charyn Canyon but if you can spare 2 or more days, hike or drive around in a 4×4 and visit all of them!

Charyn Canyon - Yellow Valley - Journal of Nomads

There are a few legends about the canyon. People believed that it was a place haunted by spirits who didn’t like to be disturbed by the living.

To keep people away, these evil spirits drove animals to the cliffs and forced them to jump down on anyone walking through the canyon.

Now there are stories that these evil spirits were in fact wolves that were hunting people.

Charyn Canyon -legends - nightly shadows - Journal of Nomads

One part of the canyon – I don’t know which one exactly – is also called the Witch Canyon . The legend says that witches flew there late at night, luring travelers on the rocks so they could push them off the cliffs.

Whether these stories are true or not, if you’re camping in the canyon, you shouldn’t pitch your tent too close to the edges of the cliffs… The darkness alone is treacherous enough for you to trip and fall, even without wolves or witches!

What you need to know about visiting Charyn Canyon Kazakhstan – Practical Travel Information

1. how much does it cost to visit charyn canyon.

Before you can reach the Valley of Castles, you will come across an entrance gate. The officer in the little kiosk will ask for your passport, and documents (if you’re driving) and will want to know if you’ll be camping there for the night.

The entrance fee to enter Charyn Canyon without camping is 806 tenge per person (about $2).

If you want to spend the night in your tent, you’ll have to pay another 350 tenge per tent (the prices tend to change, depending on the season).

You will have to pay an additional 100 tenge if you intend to drive into the canyon with your vehicle , if not, you can park your car near the entrance of the park.

2. How to get to Charyn Canyon from Almaty (and how to get back)

It takes about 4 hours of driving from Almaty to Charyn Canyon (don’t always believe Google Maps).

Charyn Canyon - how to get from Almaty to Charyn Canyon - Journal of Nomads

2.1 How to get from Almaty to Charyn Canyon by public transport

Getting to the Charyn Canyon by public transport is probably not your best option.

We heard that there is a bus leaving from Sayakhat bus station (Almaty) to Saty . However, out of all the (local) people we asked, no one knows when this bus leaves.

If you’re lucky enough to catch this bus (if you did, please provide us with more info in the comments below), you’ll have to ask the bus driver to drop you off at the intersection with the road to the Canyon.

From there it’s a 10km walk before you reach the entrance gate. You could always try to hitchhike that part of the way as there should be a few cars passing by.

Getting back on the same bus will be very hard – if you were already able to take this bus to get there in the first place!

You can hitchhike back or read how to get to the canyon and back by taking a shared taxi.

2.2 From Almaty to Charyn Canyon by shared taxi

If you don’t have your own transportation and you don’t want to hitchhike the whole way, taking a shared taxi from Almaty will be the best and cheapest way to get to Charyn Canyon .

Go to Sayakhat bus station and search for the shared taxis that go to Kegen , the name of a village near the canyon (the drivers will shout it).

Ask the driver to drop you off at the intersection with Charyn Canyon (say “ stop Charyn povorot ”). From there, it’s another 10km walk or you could always hitchhike. The shared taxi should cost around 2000 – 3000 tenge per person (about $6 – $9 at the current exchange rate).

Getting from Charyn Canyon to Almaty might be trickier. You can hitchhike back from the entrance of the canyon to the intersection. There you can signal to stop any passing cars by waving your hand up and down.

When the car stops, it will likely be a shared taxi (if you’re lucky, they’ll understand you’re hitchhiking and you won’t have to pay).

First, ask if they are going to Almaty. If not, try to get a ride to Kokpek , a nearby village. That should cost you around 500 tenge .

Once you’ve reached the village, you will have more chances of finding a bus or a shared taxi to Almaty for 3000 tenge .

Note: the prices might have gone up since the inflation. Please share in the comments below if you have updated info on the current prices. Thank you!

2.3 Renting a car in Almaty

A more expensive option is to rent a car .

If you’re willing to pay the price, you’ll get a lot more time and freedom to explore and drive around the canyon. Try to rent a 4×4 car if you’re planning on driving off-road.

Friends of mine were able to rent a car for $90 USD through a local office in Almaty. You might find cheaper deals online .

2.4 Hitchhiking to Charyn Canyon

If you have the time, you can definitely reach the Charyn Canyon by hitchhiking.

It won’t cost you a thing and the trip toward the canyon will probably be an adventure on its own.

Take a mashrutka or shared taxi to get out of the city center of Almaty and once you reach the highway (A-351), you can start hitchhiking towards Kegen.

Once you pass Kokpek, it’s another 30 minutes to the intersection. Say “ stop Charyn povorot ” so you don’t miss it!

Make it clear from the start that you’re not paying for the ride, otherwise you might get some problems. Please read my tips on hitchhiking in Kazakhstan .

2.5 Charyn Canyon Tours

Charyn Canyon is one of Almaty’s most popular destinations so it’s pretty easy to join a tour of the canyon.

You can check at the offices of local tour companies in Almaty or you can also browse for tours online.

You can also join my 10-day Best of Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan Adventure Tour as you’ll visit the Kolsai Lakes, Lake Kaindy, Charyn Canyon and many more!

I recommend the following guided day tours from Almaty to Charyn Canon, organized by local travel companies:

If you have a couple of days, I’d highly recommend booking a tour that combines a visit to Charyn Canyon with the Kolsai Lakes and Lake Kaindy and even Altyn Emel National Park:

3. Where to stay in Charyn Canyon

3.1 camping in charyn canyon.

It is possible and safe to camp in Charyn Canyon. You’ll be charged an extra 350 tenge per tent at the entrance gate.

You might see some fellow happy-campers and I heard that it can be quite crowded during high season (June – September). We were there in October and were the only people camping there.

If you visit Charyn Canyon in winter (between October and May) and want to camp there, know that it can get very cold at night so prepare accordingly (check out my packing list for camping in winter ).

Just be careful not to pitch your tent too close to the cliffs and take your garbage with you (there are plenty of rubbish bins around).

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -camping in Charyn Canyon- Journal of Nomads

It’s really worth it to camp in Charyn Canyon for at least one night. You’ll be treated to a canopy of stars at night and if you manage to get up early enough to see the sunrise, you’ll see a spectacle of golden colors that give the red cliffs a very special glow.

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles - sunrise - Journal of Nomads

3.2 Hotels in Charyn Canyon

There are currently no accommodation facilities in Charyn Canyon.

The nearest hotels in Charyn Canyon are in Saty, the village on the way to the Kolsai Lakes .  This would be a perfect option if you also decide to visit these lakes.

There are a few homestays in Saty where you can show up and ask for availability or you can book a room online to stay at one of the following guesthouses in Saty:

  • Kolsay Aisha
  • Guesthouse Arcabay Karligash

4. What to do in Charyn Canyon – hiking & other activities

4.1 hiking in charyn canyon.

There are plenty of short walks that you can do in Charyn Canyon.

The most popular part, the Valley of Castles, is about 3 km long. You’ll find signs pointing you in the direction of where you can safely descend the cliffs.

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles -hiking trail - Journal of Nomads

There are no hiking trails in Charyn Canyon but if you want to be adventurous and go on a longer hike, you can always find inspiration on Wikiloc for an improvised track in the canyon or a track along the Charyn River .

Just prepare yourself well, bring enough food and water (or fill up your   LifeStraw Waterfilter Bottle   in the river) and tell someone about your plans! Be adventurous but don’t be stupid…

4.2 Things to do in Charyn Canyon

If you have your own (rental) car, you could do some off-road driving . Just check with the guards where you can safely drive around – please be careful near the steep cliffs!

During the summer, the canyon can be scorching hot so if you need to cool down, you can go for a swim in the river .

Charyn Canyon - Charyn River - Journal of Nomads

Some tour companies in Almaty offer extra activities, such as rafting, kayaking, fishing and guided off-road driving tours.

5. Best time to visit Charyn Canyon

If this place would be somewhere in Europe, it would be swarmed by tourists from all over the world.

Luckily, Kazakhstan is not on the radar of many tourists yet, so you can still enjoy the vast beauty of the canyon in a rather peaceful way.

However, during the high season (June – September) you will likely bump into other (local and foreign) tourists.

If you want to “have” the canyon for yourself, go on a weekday before or outside the high season.

Winter is probably not the best time to visit Charyn Canyon. The road to get there is partly invisible due to the amount of snow and could be potentially dangerous. Although, the canyon must look fantastic when it’s covered in a blanket of snow!

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles - sunrise - Journal of Nomads

Pay a visit to Kolsai National Park on your way to or from Charyn Canyon!

6. How to prepare yourself for a visit to Charyn Canyon

  • Bring enough food and water with you for the amount of time you’re going to spend in the canyon since there aren’t any food stands or convenience stores. You could always have a meal in the restaurant of the eco-village, but remember that it’s only open during the high season.
  • Wear suitable footwear, preferably hiking boots. The surface of the canyon can be slippery so watch out where you walk. Avoid going off-track as it can be dangerous.
  • If you’re planning on spending the night in the canyon, be aware that it can be pretty cold. Bring a warm sleeping bag and an extra sweater to keep you warm at night. You can find more tips about camping in winter here.
  • In case you’re traveling by yourself, let someone know that you’re going to the canyon and how long you will stay there. If you stick to the path, nothing will happen but remember: it’s better to be safe than sorry (ever watched the movie 127 hours ?).
  • Never leave without proper travel medical insurance. I highly recommend HeyMondo .

Need Travel Insurance for Central Asia ? I use and highly recommend HeyMondo Travel Insurance . As a reader of Journal of Nomads, you get a 5% discount off your insurance plan!

Dear Cynthia, I will travel to Kazachstan in September 2024, I am accompanied by a Kazakh woman who only speaks Russian (that’s okay but I don’t) I do have a few querstions, if you would reply that’sperfect. 1) I will rent a car in Almaty and drive into Charyn canyon. Is it possible ? It is a dirt track / off-road. 2) I continue my journey to Zharkent and Khorgos. This is for me the closest I can get to China. Is shopping in the free trade zone worth doing it? 3) On my way back to Almaty I will visit Kolsai lake 1and 2 and lake Kaindy. I do have time but I also want visit Almaty. Do you have any advice? Greetings, Werner from Belgium.

Hi Werner, 1) yes, you can drive for a bit into the Canyon. Just make sure your car is suitable for it. 2) I haven’t been there so I can’t tell you whether or not is’s worth it 3) You can combine your visit to the lakes with Charyn Canyon or visit the lakes on your way back. I’d take a full day if you want to get to the second lake and back and Kaindy lake.

Have a great trip!

Hello, how are you? Is there any place in Charyn Canyon to storage luggage?

We will be with our big backpacks on our way from Saty to Almaty.

Hi Marcos, there is no place to store your luggage at Charyn Canyon, it’s only nature there. Unless you ask the guards at the entrance if they want to look after your backpacks? 🙂

Hello, we are just coming back from the canyon and the price is now 806 tenge per person 7 years old or older and 100 tenge for the car. I don’t know about camping fee and they didn’t ask. We are very happy to have taken to time to go see at least the canyon of castle it was beautiful 🤩. I don’t know if those were there back then, but on the path on the top part there is 2 potable water fountain installed for the visitors free of charge.

Thank you for the updates Jacquelin!

Wow looks beautiful, I and with my boyfriend we went for 3 days including Kol Sai lake and Kaiyndy. There is lot of companies can arrange this kind of tours, we choose Pegas Adventure company, and it was great experience in my life.

If you’re have more than 10 days would be prefer to see Kyrgyzstan. I loved nature, mountains, peoples of Kyrgyzstan

I’m happy to hear you had such a great experience Jessica! And thank you for the tour recommendation!

Hi, guys 🙂 the article is really great 🙂 I enjoyed in it from the first sentence and first photo 🙂 I am planning to see the canyon in February this year. Do you have some new infos about it in winter? 🙂

Hi Aleksa, thank you! Very happy to hear you enjoyed this article so much! How are you planning on going to the canyon? If you’d go by car (maybe you could find other travelers to join you and split the costs), it will be cold but nonetheless beautiful 🙂 If you want to join a day tour, they only organize them on the weekends in the winter (I believe it was a Saturday) from Almaty. Getting there by public transport (shared taxi or hitchhiking) might be more difficult as there will be fewer people going that way now but you never know of course!

Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Hello Alexa, I’m local, and I can say that winter is a great time to visit Charyn – not hot, no people and amazing contrast of red cliffs & white snow! Take winter jacket and comfortable shoes to hike around. Also take some food cause there’s nothing working at the canyon on winter time. And you can contact tour companies to provide you private tour on any day you wish, with or without guide (just driver), so you can choose what option is more suitable for you, bargain cause it’s a slow season for tour companies. Group tours on weekends is rare thing to find in winter, but check this option through locals. I hope I helped you a little bit 😉

Love your photos! No wonder they call it the Valley of Castles, it looks stunning. I can only imagine what it was like to stand on the top of the hill there and enjoy the view. And I was always wondering about sleeping in yurts, that would probably be an experience for itself! 🙂

Sleeping in yurts in Kazakhstan is definitely something to try! It’s a great experience to live for a while like the locals! 😀

Uh, loved the photos and overall your whole blog looks stunning! I went to Grand Canyon myself last year and it was just breathtaking!

Thank you so much for your kind words <3

I will be honest–I have never considered vacationing in Kazakhstan. However, it actually looks very beautiful, and affordable. Thanks for all the practical information, it is all very useful for travelers planning a trip :).

It’s a great vacation destination and it’s very cheap and affordable. You won’t regret coming here that’s for sure!

This guide is so useful. I have never heard about charyn canyons but it looks so similar to Grand Canyon. We been to Grand Canyon last year and this reminded me all those wonderful memories back.

It’s indeed super similar, there’s even a river that runs through part of the canyon! We just love all the colors of the rocks and the stones.

A Complete Guide To Charyn Canyon | Kazakhstan’s Mini Grand Canyon

  • Central Asia
  • A Complete Guide To Charyn…

25 January 2018.

Driving through the desolate monotony of the rolling steppe, the deep amber crack of the Charyn Canyon appears as if from nowhere – a mini Grand Canyon carved through the heart of the Kazakh desert.

The craggy, time-worn cliffs tower high above the lonely dirt track that meanders through the deep chasm and blush a rich vermillion hue in the sunlight.

The Valley of Castles is certainly an apt name for such a remarkable place.

A Complete Guide To Charyn Canyon | Kazakhstan

Onward beneath rocky pillars and eroded archways, the path rambles toward an oasis that sustains this network of desert ravines, a verdant tangle of deep green that clings tightly to the banks of the raging Charyn River.

Come weekends, it’s a spot that locals love!

If you’re passing through Almaty , a visit to the Charyn Canyon is a must, but as we discovered, even being one of the biggest attractions in the region, getting there isn’t as straightforward as you might expect.

Though many visitors opt for a long day-trip from Almaty to Charyn Canyon, spending at least a night there is definitely worthwhile to explore a little deeper and enjoy the area away from the crowds. If you’ve come with a car of your own, you could very easily get stuck here for days.

In this post we cover how to get to the Charyn Canyon from Almaty and where to stay overnight if you have a little extra time on your hands.

If you’re getting driven to the canyon, you’ll be dropped above the entrance to the Valley of Castles after paying the entrance fee of around 750T ($2). Walk along the rim for stunning views into the ravine, or follow the steep path downwards to enjoy the canyon from below.

The walk to the river is 4km and takes around an hour.

An eco-park sits beside the river offering yurts and wooden bungalows for the night as well as a small restaurant with a few Kazakh staples – namely shashlyk and salad. For self-caterers, the shady area beside the river is a popular picnic spot for locals.

If you are staying overnight, be sure to be out exploring during sunrise or sunset when the cliffs are streaked in gold and amber as the light melts in and out of the canyon.

It’s also important to note that while the river may look incredibly inviting on a warm summer’s day, it is very fast flowing and swimming here is not recommended.

For the return, there are a few steep trails which you can scramble up to reach the escarpment and experience a different perspective over the canyon, or simply meander back up the road to where you were dropped. The eco-park also runs regular trips in an open-air 4WD back to the parking area for just a few dollars.

Unfortunately, this is as much as most visitors will ever see of this beautiful area. For the more intrepid and those equipped with their own vehicle or are keen to set off on foot, the Valley of Castles is really just the start of what there is to see in the national park – four other little-explored canyons are waiting just nearby.

Without our own wheels, and in no rush to spend our days hiking through the desert in the sweltering summer heat, we didn’t manage to venture much further either, but this guide should be useful for those wishing to explore further afield.

A Complete Guide To Charyn Canyon | Kazakhstan

If you’ve visited Almaty in summer, you’ll quickly realise this part of the world gets pretty bloody hot! Out in the desert, it only gets worse.

Luckily the day we arrived was overcast so it was particularly mild in the canyon, but having to walk a decent chunk of the way back to the main road the next morning was excruciatingly hot along the dusty road in full sun.

If you do visit in the summer months, come prepared for intense heat – bring plenty of water and sun protection, including a wide-brimmed hat and long sleeves! If you’re visiting in winter you’ll have a much more comfortable experience and might even need to rug up if spending the night in the canyon.

READ NEXT:  THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN ALMATY!

As you may have discovered about many places in Kazakhstan, getting in and out of the Charyn Canyon National Park isn’t always easy.

On our return journey, we ended up traipsing through the desert, hot and very, very sweaty, for a good hour before we managed to get a ride. Depending on your budget and timeframe, these are the best ways to get to the Charyn Canyon.

As by far the easiest option, a private day-trip from Almaty is the one most visitors opt for. However, with close to 4 hours of driving each way, the biggest complaint is that you don’t get all that much time to spend in the actual canyon. At around $70, it’s also an exceptionally expensive day out by Kazakh standards. These tours can be booked at agencies around Almaty or online.

A more affordable option is to join the bus tour to Charyn Canyon which runs only on weekends and costs just 6,000T ($18) per person for the return trip. Your hostel should be able to arrange the trip for you.

If you’d rather visit the canyon independently and explore at your own pace, the next best option is to link up with some fellow travellers and commandeer your own taxi for the day. This is the option we took to get there and simply forfeited our seats for the return journey as we planned to spend a night in the canyon. We organised this through our hostel and paid 5,000T ($15) each which, though not the cheapest option, we felt was worth it for the convenience of being dropped right at the entrance to the canyon.

A Complete Guide To Charyn Canyon | Kazakhstan

This is easily the cheapest option but also involves the most hassle and is more suited to those with no time constraints and who are happy to hike across the desert in potentially stifling conditions.

From Almaty’s Sayakhat bus station, take a taxi or marshrutka in the direction of Kegen (mornings are your best bet) and jump out at the turnoff to Charyn Canyon. We’d recommend keeping track of where you are on a map as we’ve heard of some people getting dropped at the wrong turnoff and being stuck with a farther longer walk than necessary.

From the main road, it’s an unshaded 10km walk along a sandy dirt road before reaching the Valley of Castles. From late morning as more visitors begin to arrive, you may be able to snare a lift all the way to the river.

Take your time to explore, spend the night and when you’re ready to leave, you’ll need to hike (or hitchhike) back out to the main road.

Once at the main road, simply flag down a marshrutka bound for Almaty which tend to pass around mid-morning en route from Kegen.

If you’re planning on returning back to Almaty, we’d recommend leaving as much of your luggage behind as possible.

Renting a car in Almaty isn’t always easy, but it’s certainly the best way to explore the canyons freely and venture further than just the Valley of Castles. We would highly recommend you take a sturdy 4WD as we did see one car get stuck trying to get out of the canyon, and thoroughly check your rental agreement before signing anything.

A Complete Guide To Charyn Canyon | Kazakhstan

Since you’ve ventured this far from Almaty, it would be a shame to miss out on the spectacular Kolsai Lakes just a few hours away. If you’re planning to join an organised tour, many include the lakes as part of a jam-packed 3-day excursion. If you’re travelling independently, the only option to get between Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai Lakes is to hitchhike which we found surprisingly easy along this stretch.

DON’T MISS: Our Complete Guide To The Kolsai Lakes !

If you plan to stay the night in Charyn Canyon, you can either make use of the accommodations provided by the Eco-Park , or camp beside the river.

Yurts |  Yurts are very brightly coloured and set up traditionally with a thin mattress on the floor.

Price: 40,000T ($120) for the whole yurt which sleeps at least 8 people.

Bungalows |  Basic wooden cabins beside the river with simple beds, a light and a small veranda area.

Price: 14,000T ($42) for a two-person bungalow or 20,000T ($60) to sleep three.

Tents |  Camping is allowed in the cleared space beside the river and is free of charge with your own gear.

During the week when the park was not busy, we found these accommodation prices could be brought down slightly with some gentle negotiation. Bring more money than you think you’ll need in case prices have changed unexpectedly. Prices listed are from summer 2017.

A Complete Guide To Charyn Canyon | Kazakhstan

Facilities are basic with drop toilets (the one nearest the restaurant is by far the most tolerable) and no running water. Portable taps and basins are filled from the river which we would recommend purifying before drinking. We always carry a reusable water bottle and our SteriPen for water purification with us for exactly this reason!

Check the latest reviews and prices on our favourite Klean Kanteen water bottle or SteriPen .

The restaurant mainly serves shashlyk which is a favourite among large groups of locals out for the day, but what is on offer heavily depends on what the restaurant has in stock at the time, and unsurprisingly, prices are far higher than you’ll find in Almaty. Budget travellers and non-meat-eaters will be much happier with a self-catered picnic beside the river.

Can you give information where to book group tour weekend to Charyn Canyon, in your blog you said your hostel can arrange for you. Can you give info which hostel is that ?

Hey Rio, in our experience almost any hostel in Almaty will be able to arrange this for you. Though we didn’t actually use the service, we initially stayed at Hostel Dom and they organised it for some other people at the hostel.

Tour overview

You will see:

  • Valley of Castles of Charyn Canyon
  • Charyn River
  • Beatiful Kazakh steppe along the road
  • Hidden path from Charyn River to the top of the Canyon

About the canyon. Charyn Canyon is a natural wonder located in the Almaty region of Kazakhstan. It is a unique geological formation that stretches for over 80 kilometers along the Charyn River . The canyon is often referred to as the “ Grand Canyon of Central Asia ” due to its resemblance to the famous Grand Canyon in the United States. Charyn Canyon is known for its dramatic cliffs and rock formations, which have been shaped by millions of years of erosion. The canyon’s walls reach heights of up to 300 meters and are composed of colorful sedimentary rocks, creating a stunning visual display. One of the most popular attractions in Charyn Canyon tour is the Valley of Castles, a section of the canyon where the rock formations resemble medieval castles. Visitors can hike along marked trails to explore this unique landscape and enjoy breathtaking views of the canyon. The canyon is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare bird species and various plants adapted to the arid climate. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for camping, picnicking, and hiking. Charyn Canyon is located about 220 kilometers east of Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan. It can be reached by car in approximately 3-4 hours by my organized tour from Almaty. The canyon is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and anyone seeking to experience the natural beauty of Kazakhstan.

The Kazakh steppe tour. Along the way to Charyn Canyon you will pass through the magnificent Kazakh steppe. The journey itself is a feast for the eyes as you drive through endless plains of tall grasses, dotted with herds of horses, cattle, and sheep grazing peacefully. Along the way, you might even catch a glimpse of some nomadic herders going about their daily lives. As you continue your journey towards Charyn Canyon, the scenery gradually changes from the wide open steppe to a more rugged, rocky terrain. The contrast between the vastness of the steppe and the dramatic beauty of Charyn Canyon makes this tour a memorable experience.

Charyn River.  End point of our hiking tour through Valley of Castles will be Charyn River. The Charyn River flows through the Canyon and the same named National Park. The river’s crystal-clear turquoise waters add to the scenic beauty of the canyon.

Food on the road.  We can buy popular local kind of fast food called Samsa along the way to the Canyon. Try some national food like Kurs, also khown as “kurt balls” or “dried cheese balls”and national drink Kumys. Or just stop in a local road caffe to taste nice shashlyk (grilled meat), pilaw (uzbek famous national food, rice with meat) or uygur popular food – lagman (spicy hand made noodles with meat and vegetables).

Tour options. Our Charyn Canyon tour is developed to be very flexible. On your request it is possible to add any other locations to the tour. Visit also so called Black and Moon Canyons. Altyn-Emel national park – Charyn canyon – Kaiyndy lake tour

  • Tour Program
  • Almaty City

Altyn-Emel national park

Altyn-Emel is a national natural park located in the Ili River Valley. At first, the Park was founded to preserve a unique natural complex with archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, rare and endangered species of animals and plants. In the total, the park has an area of 520,000 ha.

Here is also located red and white coloured mountains called Aktau-Katytau mountains. These mountains are famous for its unique appearance. It was probably created by small volcanoes, erupted and immediately cooled down million years ago. Aktau is red and white mountains in a shape of a pyramid. Katytau is red mountains that have preserved well the remains of volcanic eruptions.

Charyn canyon

Charyn Canyon which is considered to be the largest canyon in the world after the famous Colorado one in America. The first time driving up to the canyon, you understand why he is credited with mystical features. The majestic appearance of the earthly fault could not but generate in the minds of our ancestors’ various superstitions and conjectures. More than 12 million years ago, the Charyn River, flowing from the northern Tien Shan, formed a canyon. Layered massifs, with a height of 150-300 meters, stretched for 154 km. Red clay walls are covered with deep wrinkles and gorges. Numerous beams and ravines form a dense, disordered network. From the top of the canyon, there are picturesque landscapes of snowy Alatau mountains, wide Ili and Syugatinsky valleys.

Signing Sand dune

Another phenomenon of the Altyn Emel national park is Signing Sand dune. The name of this dune was given because when the wind blows from the west dispersing the sands, one has a feeling that the pipe organ is playing in the heart of the desert. The Signing Sand Dune phenomena emerged thanks to the wind that had been blowing for million years from Ili river bringing sand to Altyn Emel park.

Besides these, you will see Besshatyr, the complex of Saco mounds, which is a historical monument (12th -11th centuries BC). In total there are 18 royal burrows from 8 to 70 meters in diameter, and from 2 to 20 meters in height are concentrated in the area of 2 sq.km. A chain of 45 immovable stone fences lies to the West of the royal tombs from North to South, on which carved are drawings of animals.

Kolsai and Kaiyndy lakes

The Kaindy Lake is located in a middle of a coniferous forest 1867 meters above the sea within Almaty region. It is famous because of its origin. The earthquake created a natural dam which blocked the water and created a mystical view. Most of the spruces, being surrounded by mountain water, are preserved perfectly because of the coldness of the lake. That’s why spruce stems stay there like masts of the sunken ships.

Altyn Emel national park: Signing sand dunes

The starting point is Almaty. The time from Almaty to the  Altyn – Emel national park is about 4-5 hours. Arrival in the National Park. Accommodation and lunch in a guest house.

So-called Singing Dune or Signing Sands is a popular attraction in Altyn-Emel. The size of the Dune is enormous: its length is about two-three kilometres, with the height of about 120 metres. What is unique about the Dune is that in dry weather it produces melody-like sounds, which is the very reason for calling it Singing Dune. The ‘song’ of the Dune can be heard even several kilometres away from its location. Do why the Dune sings? The reason might be that the sound is produced when very small grains of sand rub against one another: a gust of wind gives easily audible squeak, and strong gusts – more intense and expressive sounds, which resemble sounds of an organ. However, even in calm weather one can hear the music of the Dune. Yet another mystery about the Dune is that despite the unfixed sand, it does not travel, and remains in the territory of Altyn-Emel for about several thousand years.

The legend among the local people says the great Genghis Khan and his faithful warriors are buried under these sands. So the Dune signs when the soul of the Khan, exhausted by the spiritual unrest, tells his descendants about his victories.

You will definitely enjoy climbing the sand dune from top of which you can observe the panorama of the surroundings. In the north – the violet-blue ridge of Djungarian Alatau mountains, in the south – thin strip of the Ili River is visible.

The Ili River is the largest and longest river in the territory of Almaty region. The Ili River was already a lively shipping route from Western China at the beginning of the 20th century. Vessels and barges began to walk on it as early as the beginning of the twentieth century. After the construction in 1970 of the Kapchagay hydroelectric complex and filling of the Kapchagai Reservoir, the shipping began to fade away, as the river above the Kapchagai Reservoir began to melt, and the reservoir in its eastern part began to silt.

Altyn Emel national park: Aktau-Katatau mountains

After breakfast in the guest house, we start our 2d day tour.

First destination is red volcanic mountains.

  • The Katutau (1630 m above sea level) stretches from the southwest to the northeast in the form of a narrow hilly-ridge ridge with plateau-like peaks. The slopes are dismembered by a multitude of waterless gorges and latches. Bright bands show red clays and bluish-grey limestone sandstones of the Tertiary period. The very word “Katutau” is translated as “severe mountains”. In the Permian period (approximately 240 million years ago) two large volcanoes operated at this site. The mountains are composed mainly of lava and associated volcanic rocks. Katutau is translated in different ways – whether gloomy mountains or empty. Direct translation – Frozen mountains. Indeed, it is easy to imagine how the lava from the ancient volcano froze in a stream, and the wind, after millions of years, completed the sculptural composition.

The next destination is Aktau mountains

  • Aktau mountains could surprise you by its red, green, pink or even pale blue coloured stony slopes. The mountains are likely to be risen from the place where there used to be sea, which left its traces on the surface of the mountains. Archaeologists have discovered dinosaur bones in the mountains of Aktau, and remains of other species are being found even today. The main feature of this array is the complete absence of vegetation, so the landscape resembles fantastic lunar landscapes. The mountains are characterized by nakedness and steepness of the slopes. The remains of ancient animals (crocodiles, turtles, giant rhinoceroses, primitive predators), whose age is estimated at 25-30 million years, are perfectly preserved in the layers of Paleogene-Neogene lacustrine deposits

Dinner and overnight at the guest house.

Altyn Emel- Charyn canyon

Early breakfast. We will depart from Altyn Emel to the Charyn Canyon which is considered to be the largest canyon in the world after the famous Colorado one in America.

Our first stop is Valley of Castles to which we will actually descend and then walk approximately 2km enjoying the views of this  “Medieval castles”.  But in order to know for sure that these fantastical walls accept you, we will pass through stone gates. Then continuing our route and taking photos at the Charyn river, it is here while listening to the birds signing you get an idea of eternity. During this tour, our Guide will tell you lots’ of legends associated with the canyon.

Lunch in a local cafe

We continue our route by driving to the Yellow canyon. We will stop at the panoramic site of the Yellow canyon where you will understand why it is also called the “Canyon of yurts”. We trek at the Yellow canyon for another hour while taking photos and then continue our route back to the Valley of Castles.

We arrive at the Valley of Castles but from the right bank of the Charyn river. And right here, we like taking a final batch of photos of amazing red towers, nature made 100m walls.  While standing on top of the rock stone and below you is a landscape of the Valley of Castles, you will feel that you might be the only person on this planet.

Departure to Saty village. Overnight at the guest house.

Charyn canyon – Kolsai and Kaiyndy lakes

Early in the morning after breakfast, we will depart on a car to Kolsai lake

Kolsai lakes are called the pearl of the northern Tien Shan. Three picturesque mountain lakes, located in the northern part of the Tien Shan, are called the Kolsai. The two lower lakes are surrounded by firs, alpine meadows and mountain pastures. The upper lake is among the rocks.

Lake Kolsay-1 is clamped in a narrow gorge. The firs here are higher than on other lakes, the water is much warmer. Here you can try mountain strawberries, and lovers of fishing will find their favourite pastime.

Picnik with lunchboxes.

Kaiyndy lake

  • In the distant year of 1911, on January 4, a strong earthquake occurred in the mountains of Kungei Alatau. A huge landslide created a dam and blocked the mountain river. The gorge and the centuries-old Tangshan firs that grew on its slopes were flooded with water. So nature and created this beautiful lake at an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level . Seeing Kaiyndy for the first time, it seems that this is a real cemetery of ships! After all, from the turquoise surface of the reservoir here and there, sharp peaks sticking out like the masts of sunken ships stick out. What is this? What secrets does Kaiyndy Lake hide in its depths. In fact, the peaks sticking out of the water are the dry tops of the firs. The trees themselves, as you might guess, were “drowned” in a mountain lake. In any other place, they would have rotted long ago, but in Kaiyndy such cold water (even in July, not higher than 6 ° C), that the trees were literally preserved.

So in clear weather they are perfectly visible through the water. Well, and divers can even walk along the paths of this fabulous underwater. In translation, it means “abounding with birches”. But do not be surprised to look around the surrounding Tien Shan spruce – there are birches here too – 5 km from the pond stretches the birch grove. However, not only the beauty of the surrounding nature attracts tourists here – the “highlight” of the local landscape is the Kaiyndy lake itself, or more precisely, what is hidden under the water of this reservoir.

On this beautiful note, we finish our 4-day tour

Discover the Wild Wonder of Kazakhstan National Parks

L iving in Colorado, we have an affinity for the great outdoors and our national parks. I knew that Kazakhstan had some spectacular landscapes. But really had no idea of the quantity and diversity of their national parks. Over a week in the Almaty region of Kazakhstan , our group had the opportunity to explore four of the Kazakhstan National Parks: Ile-Alatau, Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lakes and Altyn-Emel. And, they were certainly diverse.

Special thanks to  Kazakhstan Tourism and USAID for sponsoring this trip. All opinions are always our own. This post may contain affiliate links, where we receive a small commission on sales of the products that are linked at no additional cost to you.

Currently, there are fourteen national parks spread across the country, each offering unique landscapes, ecosystems, and wildlife. Many of the national parks in Kazakhstan were formed in the early 1990s, following the country’s independence, as a response to the growing need for conservation and environmental awareness.

Since then, these protected areas have played a crucial role in safeguarding Kazakhstan’s natural treasures and providing opportunities for visitors to explore, appreciate, and learn about the country’s rich biodiversity and stunning natural landscapes.

National Parks are frequently located away from cities, in nature, with a couple of exceptions. Some of the most spectacular are the hardest to reach. This is no different in Kazakhstan. I would recommend hiring a tour company to arrange transportation and overnight lodging, if needed. The roads can be bumpy and the small towns harder to navigate on your own.

Altyn-Emel National Park showcases one of the country’s mesmerizing landscapes. Covering an expansive area of over 4,600 square kilometers, the park features rich biodiversity. One of the park’s most notable features is the Singing Dunes, a unique phenomenon where the shifting sands emit a haunting melodic sound. These towering sand dunes, reaching heights of up to 150 meters, create an awe-inspiring sight and a memorable experience for visitors.

Altyn-Emel also boasts the majestic Aktau and Katutau Mountains, characterized by their distinct colorful rock formations, reminiscent of an artist’s palette. The park’s diverse ecosystems encompass desert, steppe, and mountain habitats, providing a haven for a wide array of wildlife, including rare and endangered species such as the Przewalski’s horse (last truly wild horse) and the goitered gazelle.

Nestled in the northeastern region of Kazakhstan, Bayanaul National Park stands as a testament to the country’s natural splendor. Established in 1985, it is one of the oldest national parks in Kazakhstan and covers an area of approximately 68,453 hectares. Bayanaul captivates visitors with its breathtaking landscapes, encompassing picturesque mountains, serene lakes, dense forests, and vast steppes.

The park’s centerpiece is the striking Mount Akshoky, known for its distinct shape resembling a sleeping woman. Outdoor enthusiasts come to to Bayanaul for its abundance of recreational activities, including hiking, rock climbing, camping, and boating on Lake Zhasybay. Wildlife enthusiasts enjoy by the park’s diverse fauna, including roe deer, wild boar, wolves, and various bird species.

Bayanaul National Park offers a serene escape from the bustling city life of Astana, immersing visitors in the tranquility of nature and leaving a lasting impression of Kazakhstan’s remarkable natural heritage.

Also known as the “Kazakh Switzerland,” Burabay National Park, is a picturesque destination located in the Akmola region of Kazakhstan, near Astana. Established in 2000, this enchanting park spans over 82,450 hectares and is renowned for its stunning landscapes and pristine beauty.

The centerpiece of the park is the mesmerizing Lake Burabay. Surrounded by lush forests and majestic granite cliffs that create a postcard-perfect setting. Visitors can embark on scenic hikes through the park’s trails. Marvel at the breathtaking views from the Kokshetau Mountain. Or explore the mystical caves that dot the area.

Burabay National Park is a paradise for nature lovers, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, and picnicking along the lake’s shores. The park is also home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including rare bird species like the black stork and golden eagle.

Buiratau National Park is situated in the Kostanay and Akmola regions of Kazakhstan. This park showcases the country’s unique landscapes and rich biodiversity. Spanning over 2,205 square kilometers, it is characterized by its vast steppe plains, rolling hills, and shimmering lakes. One highlight is the iconic Blue Bay, a stunning lake with turquoise waters that create a striking contrast against the surrounding greenery.

Buiratau is also home to several archaeological and historical sites, providing a glimpse into the region’s ancient past. Nature enthusiasts can explore the park’s diverse ecosystems. Spot an array of bird species. And observe the native wildlife, including saiga antelope, steppe marmots, and wild boars.

Charyn Canyon

Located in southeastern Kazakhstan, Charyn Canyon National Park is an impressive canyon stretches for approximately 90 kilometers. It features towering cliffs, intricate rock formations, and a vibrant palette of colors that shift with the sunlight. Often compared to the famous Grand Canyon, Charyn Canyon offers a mesmerizing landscape that captivates the senses.

The park is home to the Charyn River, which meanders through the canyon, creating picturesque valleys and serene oases.
