Rotterdam has been an important port city for more than 700 years. Combined with the adjoining international Europoort, it is one of the world's busiest ports. The city center was heavily bombed during World War II and doesn't possess much in the way of historic architecture (excluding the fruits of austere, experimental post-war rebuilding). But, lovely old architecture can be found in other quarters of the city, such as Delfshaven, where 18th-century houses are on display. The Boymans-Van Beuningen Museum holds an impressive collection of European art. Take in a view from higher ground at the 60-story Space Tower, and stroll along the pedestrian shopping district Lijnbaan.

The Rotterdam cruise terminal

First some background information about the Rotterdam cruise terminal. For locals the cruise terminal is a well known place for its history. This is the exact location where the shipliners would depart for their great journey across the sea taking over half a million passengers towards their new adventures in the USA in a time long before airplanes. The famous Hotel New York build in 1901 was even the headquarters of (what is now) cruiseline Holland America Line.

Public Transport

If you exit the cruise terminal and turn left you will see there is a metro and tram stop at the first crossing. See map above for its exact location. We find the tram is the best way to go in Rotterdam for practical reasons. At the crossing at the foot of the bridge, to the left of the cruise terminal, tram 20, 23 and 25 come by. Make sure to step into the ones saying “Centraal Station” or you’ll be heading the wrong way. Pay the driver 3 euro for a 1 hour ticket. You can pay for the ticket with cash or debit card. Mind you, creditcards are not accepted in the tram. It’s best to take tram 23 or 25 and hop off at the stop “Beurs” or “Stadhuis” for the city centre. The tickets you buy on the tram are more expensive. Please know you can also buy a day travel card for bus, tram and metro for 7,50 euro at any metro station. See map above for the nearest metro to the cruise terminal (300 meters away). You can already plan any journey with public transportation in and out of Rotterdam ahead of time through the following website:  http://9292.nl/en . This website is in English. You simply put in the address or place to figure out how to get from point A to B. Remember that the stop at the cruise terminal is called “Wilhelminaplein, Rotterdam”.

Taxis in Rotterdam

The official cabs of the Netherlands do not have a special color but always wear a taxi sign on the top. All the taxis are metered. You will find the taxis right in front of the terminal building. Underneath is an estimation of the taxi prices: From the cruise terminal to the city centre, one way: 10 euro From the cruise terminal to the central station, one way: 15 euro From the cruise terminal to Delft, one way: 55 euro From the cruise terminal to Kinderdijk, one way: 65 euro These prices are based on normal sized taxis although they usually also have small vans available. What is also conveniënt to know: Ubers are also operational in the city of Rotterdam and can await you outside the cruise terminal.

Some ships provide a shuttle and others do not. When a ship is in port the tourist information is usually kind enough to provide a free shuttle service into the city centre. Ask the tourist information in the cruise terminal for details.

Tram line 10: Historical tram Rotterdam

For a unique way to discover the city of Rotterdam you can hop on the historical tram from the 30’s. You can catch in on the other side of the bridge (see map above for the exact location) and it comes by every 45 minutes. Pay the driver +/- 7 euro for a ticket. The total route takes about an hour and you can hop on and hop off whenever you want. It operates only in the summer season from 11 am to 5.30 pm.

Rotterdam also has a hop on hop off bus nowadays. Find a stop at the cruise terminal.

Going to Delft

Delft is a historically unique city in the Netherlands that never disappoints. To reach it you can take tram 20, 23 or 25 (like described above) to the Central station and hop on the train to Delft. It is a simple 15 minute train ride that departs a few times per hour and will cost you about 5 euro one way. The train station is Delft is located right next to the city center.

Going to Gouda

Gouda is place known throughout the world. Visit this city of cheese by train. Take tram 20, 23 or 25 (like described above) to the Central station and hop on the train to Gouda. The ride takes about 20 minutes, departs a few times per hour and will cost you about 6 euro one way.

Going to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the city that doesn’t need a description. A taxi to Amsterdam will cost you +/- 200 euro one way, therefore we think public transportation is a better way. One way will take about 1,5 hours and cost you +/- 17 euro. First take tram 20, 23 and 25 (as described above) to the central station and hop on an Intercity train to Amsterdam Central Station. The train departs every half hour and takes about an hour. We highly recommend getting on an intercity train rather than the “stoptrein” which stops at every station.

Going to Kinderdijk

The best way to get to the famous windmills of Kinderdijk by yourself is to go by watertaxi. Read more information about this on:  http://www.waterbus.nl/kinderdijk-en/  Check the map above to see where you need to catch the waterbus.

When your ship is docked this will be first thing to catch your attention. It connects your dock with the city centre on the other side. Cross it by foot, tram or taxi.

If you take a look at a map you will see that Rotterdam is not directly located at sea. To reach the cruise terminal of Rotterdam your ship needs to sail up the New Waterway which will take +/- 3 hours. During this time you will sailing through the largest port of Europe with here and there your typical Dutch landscape. The structure you see on the picture is the Maeslandkering. This is one of the largest moving structures on earth designed to keep the lands of the Dutch dry.

The Steam Ship Rotterdam was launched in 1958 and retired in 2000. She was build for the transatlantic service and became a full-time cruise ship in 1969. She is now permanently moored as a hotel and museum. Drop by for tour of the ship or a nice cup of coffee.

At the new Rotterdam Central Station you will find quick and frequent services to Delft, Gouda and Amsterdam. If you would like to escape the busy city these 2 might be 2 great alternatives. The train takes about 15 minutes to reach Delft and departs every 10 minutes. The train to Gouda takes about 20 minutes and departs every 10 minutes. Take the metro (line D or E) or the tram (line 20, 23 or 25) to the central station.

Learn what the Dutch love about them and why they need them. You even have the opportunity to visit one from the inside. This sight is picture perfect where culture and history come together. Reach it by shore excursion or with the local water taxi.

This protestant church is the only remnant of medieval Rotterdam. It was built in the 15th and 16th century and it still stands proudly today in the city centre of Rotterdam.

This is the former Holland America Line headquarters where thousands would leave their homeland to find a better life across the Atlantic. Today you’ll find a hotel inside, where they have nice coffee and typical Dutch pastry.

Rotterdam is known for its architecture and the Cubic houses are a true masterpiece. The architect Piet Blom had the idea in the 70’s to create a village of tree houses. The result is 38 cubes that appear to be this forest in the city. One of the houses are open for inside visits where you can discover the crazy way of living in one of these houses.

Alles over de cruiseterminal in Rotterdam

Ga je binnenkort een cruise maken vanaf Rotterdam? In deze blog heb ik alles op een rij gezet over de cruiseterminal in Rotterdam en tips over parkeren en hotels!

Cruiseterminal Rotterdam

De cruiseterminal in Rotterdam ligt tegenover de bekende foodhallen in Rotterdam, vlakbij de Erasmusbrug. Lekker centraal dus! Als je al vaker gecruised hebt, weet je dat cruiseterminals ontzettend kunnen verschillen: van vol met winkels, restaurants en excursiesbalies, tot alleen een kaal gebouw. De cruiseterminal in Rotterdam heeft geen faciliteiten, behalve toiletten en natuurlijk een wachtruimte met stoelen. Er is hier dus echt niets te doen. Het enige wat er is, is een informatiestand over wat je kunt doen in Rotterdam. Maarja, als je vertrekt heb je daar natuurlijk niet zoveel aan!

Gelukkig zijn in de directe omgeving genoeg restaurants en koffiezaakjes te vinden waar je nog even wat kunt halen voordat je de cruiseterminal instapt. Overigens duurt het inchecken en boarden meestal niet zo lang. Inchecken is vaak zo gepiept en eenmaal op je cruiseschip kun je vaak meteen aanschuiven bij het buffet! Dus eigenlijk heb je verder ook niets nodig in de cruiseterminal.

Hotels bij cruiseterminal Rotterdam

Zelf vind ik het altijd fijn om een cruise relaxed te beginnen. Ik moet sowieso best een stuk rijden naar Rotterdam (ruim 2 uur) en boek dan graag een hotel vooraf. Daarom heb ik hieronder ook wat hoteltips op een rij gezet:

SS Rotterdam Hotel**** – 15-20 minuten lopen of met shuttlebus of watertaxi

Zelf ben ik heel enthousiast over het SS Rotterdam Hotel, een voormalig schip van de Holland Amerika-Lijn dat nu dienst doet als hotelschip! Hier ligt ook een grote parkeerplaats waar je kunt parkeren voor je cruise (daarover later in deze blog meer). Het is een klein stukje lopen, ik vond het zelf heel goed te doen qua afstand en een leuk begin van de dag (alleen niet zo handig als je veel bagage hebt, dan kun je beter de shuttlebus of watertaxi nemen). Tip: kom op tijd de dag voor de cruise en boek nog een tour over dit voormalige cruiseschip! Ik vond het echt heel indrukwekkend om de machinekamer, brug en het oude zwembad te zien. Bed, Bites & Business Hotel Rotterdam – 5-10 minuten lopen naar de cruiseterminal

Nog een aanrader als je een hotel vlakbij de cruise terminal in Rotterdam zoekt: het Bed, Bites & Business Hotel Rotterdam. Het is vanuit hier maar 5 tot 10 minuten lopen en je staat al bij het cruiseschip! Je hoeft namelijk alleen de Rijnhavenbrug over te steken en je bent er al zo’n beetje. Bed, Bites & Business Hotel Rotterdam is een kleinschalig boutique hotel, met 7 hotelkamers en suites. Alle kamers zijn uniek, modern en sfeervol ingericht en sommige kamers hebben zelfs een balkon. Het ontbijt is à la carte, je kunt de avond ervoor doorgeven wat je wilt ontbijten. Een croissantje, bacon & eggs of yoghurt met vers fruit: je hoeft in elk geval niet met een hongerige maag aan je cruise te beginnen! Bed, Bites & Business Hotel kun je boeken bij Booking.com.

Hotel New York**** – naast de cruiseterminal

Het bekende hotel New York ligt naast de cruiseterminal in Rotterdam. Het hotel is gevestigd in het voormalig hoofdkantoor van de Holland Amerika-Lijn. Erg nostalgisch en een hele ervaring! Heel goedkoop is dit hotel overigens niet. Hotel New York in Rotterdam kun je boeken bij Booking.com.

Room Mate Bruno**** – tegenover de cruiseterminal

Een iets voordeliger en juist weer een hele hippe optie is Hotel Room Mate Bruno. Dit hotel ligt tegenover de cruiseterminal en is nog vrij nieuw. Je kunt hier ook familiekamers boeken, ideaal als je met je gezin een cruise gaat maken. Hotel Room Mate Bruno kun je boeken bij Booking.com.

Hotels in het centrum van Rotterdam

Natuurlijk kun je ook een hotel in het centrum van Rotterdam boeken en dan met de metro (station Wilhelminaplein), met de watertaxi, gewone taxi of lopend naar de cruiseterminal komen.

Parkeren bij cruiseterminal Rotterdam

Er zijn verschillende opties om te parkeren in de buurt van de cruiseterminal:

Voordeligste parkeeroptie: parkeren bij de SS Rotterdam

Het voordeligst is om te parkeren bij de SS Rotterdam, het voormalige cruiseschip dat nu dienst doet als hotel. Je auto staat dan wel in de openlucht en niet in een garage, maar er is wel cameratoezicht. Je betaalt €13 per dag, als je bij terugkomst even je boardingpas van je cruise laat zien bij de receptie. Je betaalt dan bij de receptie en ontvangt een uitrijkaart. Het is zo’n 15-20 minuten lopen vanuit hier naar de cruiseterminal, als je via de Rijnhavenbrug loopt (dit is een voetgangers- en fietsbrug). Ook kun je met de watertaxi gaan (bestellen bij de receptie) of de gratis shuttlebus nemen naar/van het metrostation, dat vlakbij de cruiseterminal ligt.

Parkeren direct naast de cruiseterminal

Naast de cruiseterminal liggen ook verschillende parkeergarages. Hier betaal je wel veel meer dan bij de SS Rotterdam. Opties direct naar de cruisterminal zijn Parkeergarage Q-park De Rotterdam (ca. €35 per dag) en Parkeergarage World Port Center (ca. €29 per dag). Dubbelcheck altijd de actuele tarieven voordat je gaat parkeren.

Openbaar vervoer naar cruiseterminal Rotterdam

Kom je met het openbaar vervoer? Er is een metrostation vlakbij: metrostation Wilhelminaplein. Ook kun je met de watertaxi komen, stap dan uit bij Hotel New York (steiger 44) of de Holland Amerikakade (Steiger 42). Als je vanuit het centrum komt, kost een ritje €4,50 per persoon.

You will sail directly from the North Sea to the Cruise Terminal Rotterdam at Holland Amerika quay in the city center. An easy stroll over the spectacular Erasmus bridge gets you into town.

The railway station is only 5 minutes away by cab, or a nice stroll of about 25 minutes. Tram 23 or 25 are about 500 meter away, get off at Wilhelminaplein. Tickets are also available inside the tram for 3,50 Euro, bus 33 from there will take you to Rotterdam The Hague Airport.

Taxi: about 10 Euro + extra for the suitcases. The ride is about 2-3 km. You have to ride over the Erasmus bridge (if not, they take a longer ride to cheat you).

It is about an hour away from Amsterdam Schiphol airport by train . When waiting for your luggage, you can already purchase your trainticket  at the ticketmachine in the same area. Otherwise there is a ticket window in the same building after you pass the customs. Ticket machines at the Schiphol Amsterdam Airport and Rotterdam Central do accept credit cards, as do ticket machines at other large train stations, other locations only accept coins or local debit cards, for a slight surcharge you can also buy your tickets at a ticket window and not having to fool arround with machines.

Sightseeing:

This large and modern port city has risen from the ashes of World War II. In 1940, the Nazis threatened to flatten the city unless it surrendered. Rotterdam capitulated, but the Luftwaffe bombed anyway. Some of the city's architecture is spectacular!

Today, Rotterdam's most notable tourist attraction is the 605-ft-/184-m-tall Euromast Space Tower. Take the revolving, sit-down elevator to the top. From the tower you'll have a good view of the Erasmus Bridge, a modern suspension bridge nicknamed "the swan." The harbor, one of the busiest in the world, is a draw in itself, as is the nearby maritime museum. Another collection worth seeing is the Dutch, Italian and French art displayed at the Boijmans-van-Beuningen Museum. Half a day in Rotterdam is sufficient for most travelers.

The center of Rotterdam is very walkable.

Hop on/off Tram Line 10 brings you the best touristic spots of Rotterdam. Enjoy a sightseeing ride in a beautiful historic tram along the new Central Station, the Market hall, the cube houses, along the Erasmus bridge, over Coolsingel, the old western part of Rotterdam and historic Delfshaven. A ticket for a day is available on board. With this ticket, you can hop on or off at all the stops along the route.

The cruise port also offers a free shuttle to the Market Hall , an architectural designed masterpiece.

All the year round Spido offers various fascinating harbor trips. The boats are across the Cruise Terminal, just cross the Erasmus bridge, a 10 minute stroll.

Nearby Places:

Nearby UNESCO Kinderdijk is a probably the best place in Holland to see working windmills. Take the Waterbus which is across the river, just under the Erasmus Bridge, to make for a very enjoyable trip. At the same time you can visit Dordrecht , a historic and pleasant real Dutch town. Each half an hour a boat will depart, just ask on board where you will have to change boats (Ridderkerk-Schans)

Shopping and Food

The major shopping area is around the Lijnbaan close to the dock as well as the train station.

Just opened in 2014 is the Markthal , A lively market hall which is bursting at the seams with fresh fish, warm bread, tender meat, countless different cheeses and freshly harvested vegetables.

Important things to know about the Netherlands, like tipping, toilets etc.

Euros are divided into 100 cents. There are coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, and 1 and 2 euros. There are notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros (note the pattern 1, 2, 5). Some shops do not accept large denomination notes, and many don't like the 1 and 2 cent coins, and so round cash amounts to the nearest 5 cents.

Credit cards are not as widely accepted in the Netherlands as in many other countries. Always enquire first if you want to pay by credit card.

Communication:

Just about everyone speaks English in Rotterdam, and is proud of the fact. Many speak German and French too. If you are English speaking, speak English (unless you speak Dutch too): you are more likely to offend than do anyone a favor by trying out your French or German.

A common misconception is that Dutch is very close to German. In truth they are not mutually intelligible: Dutch people have to learn German at school, and in general they speak better English than German. German and Dutch are similar in the same sort of way that French and Italian are similar.

Ben je van plan om een cruise te maken vanuit de prachtige stad Rotterdam? Dat is mogelijk. Aan De Maas, vlakbij het centrum en naast de Erasmusbrug staat de grote terminal. De Cruise Terminal ligt vlakbij een historische plek, namelijk het voormalig hoofdkantoor van de Holland America Line: Hotel New York. Toentertijd was deze historische vertrek- en aankomsthal het punt vanwaar stoomschepen van de Holland America Line avonturiers naar New York brachten.

De Cruise Terminal Rotterdam , dat een industrieel erfgoed is, is getransformeerd aan de vraag van de 21e eeuw en wordt al meer dan 10 jaar gebruikt als locatie voor gave feesten, congressen en grote beurzen.  Het gebouw valt op door zijn merkwaardige bouwconstructie, de boogconstructie met grote glazen puien. De terminal is op te delen in vijf delen van 4 tot 8 meter hoog en kunnen worden verhuurd, waardoor het mogelijk is om feesten, congressen en beurzen te organiseren van 100 tot 3.000 personen. De zalen zijn voorzien van gratis Wifi.

Het is altijd raadzaam om voorafgaand de cruise een nacht te verblijven in een heerlijk hotel vlakbij de cruise terminal. Hieronder volgt een rijtje van hotels in de buurt van de cruise terminal. 

• SS Rotterdam : de beste locatie voor cruiseliefhebbers. Verblijf op een voormalig cruiseschip en geniet van een geweldige uitzicht op De Maas. 
• Hotel New York : dit is een perfecte hotel voor als je wat dichterbij wil verblijven en is in de buurt van de parkeergarage Maastoren .
• Room Mate Bruno : het gloednieuwe hotel dat in de vernieuwde pakhuizen is gelegen.
• NHOW hotel : een mooi hotel voor als je wat meer in de moderne richting zoekt en op een perfect loopafstand verwijderd van de parkeergarage Maastoren . 

De Cruise Terminal Rotterdam | Bereikbaarheid

De Cruise Terminal Rotterdam is eenvoudig te bereiken met het openbaarvervoer. Vanaf Rotterdam Centraal Station is het ongeveer 15 minuten reizen per tram of metro. Je stapt dan vervolgens uit bij het Wilhelminaplein.  Heb je besloten om met de auto te gaan? Dat is geen enkel probleem, want op 10 minuten loopafstand is onze parkeergarage Maastoren verwijderd van de cruise terminal. • Parkeerabonnementen : Er zijn ook parkeerabonnementen beschikbaar voor wie vaak parkeert in de buurt van de Cruise Terminal. I’ve assembled a list of my 5 favorite hotels that are convenient to the Rotterdam Cruise Port and close to where the cruise ships dock.

These are our favorite hotels within a minute’s walking distance of the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal check-in area. The location of these hotels is also convenient to Rotterdam city center and public transportation (Metro) making getting around the city and exploring extremely convenient.

Sitting directly across the street from the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal, this is hands down our favorite hotel for a pre-cruise night in Rotterdam.

The hotel is a funky “design” hotel with great public spaces and bar areas as well as uniquely bright and colorful rooms. If an option for a terrace room is available, it’s well worth it! You can sit on the large terrace connected to your room and see the cruise ships come and go from the terminal.

To top it off, the Room Mate Bruno is connected to a great food hall with dozens of wonderful food stalls and a large bar that serves a selection of local beers.

nhow Hotel Rotterdam

Great lounge with beautiful outdoor seating

The nhow Hotel (BY NH HOTELS) is a modern-built highrise a few buildings away from the Rotterdam Cruise Port. It’s on the same street as the checking pavilion is for cruises at the terminal. We love it for the convenience to the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal as well as how close it is to all public transportation. The public spaces, bar, and restaurant are really where this hotel shines. When the weather is nice, there is a huge terrace overlooking the water and where the cruise ships dock. The only real downside of this hotel, which is subjective, is how stark the rooms are. They’re almost institutional feeling, but still comfortable. See the 360 tour of the hotel .

SS Rotterdam (Ship Hotel!)

A retired cruise ship as a hotel!

It doesn’t get any more unusual than this! The original Flagship Holland America Rotterdam has been docked and made into a hotel and restaurant.

Discover what an original ocean liner was like by sleeping, dining, and exploring the preserved SS Rotterdam. Every aspect of being a cruise ship has been maintained where three and four-course dinners take place in the historic and magical Club Room. Casual dining and breakfast options are in the “Lido Grill” on the Promenade Deck with views over the skyline.

Getting to the Cruise Terminal seems a bit tricky, especially if you’re walking. You’ll see on a map that there are little pathways over water that zig-zag around little land masses to get to the SS Rotterdam. It looks more complicated than it is, but it’s not ideal if you have a bunch of luggage or have mobility issues.

Hotel New York – Rotterdam

Amazing History & Hotel Stay!

Hotel New York is located in the iconic former headquarters of the Holland-America Line, dating from 1901. In 1993 this historic landmark was given a new lease on life with the opening of Hotel New York.

Despite numerous improvements, the building still reflects its rich history, shaped in part by the hopes and dreams of thousands of migrants who embarked on a new adventure from here: a life in the land of opportunity: America!

Now you can stay in the historic building prior to departing (or after arriving) on your next cruise from Rotterdam!

A Luxury Hotel close to the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal

Rotterdam is not known specifically for having an abundance of “Luxury” hotels, however, many people looking for a hotel with more of an upscale feel choose the Mainport Hotel. We’ve stayed here a few times and find it to be higher-end but not truly luxurious like you’d expect from a Four Seasons.

Mainport Design Hotel Rotterdam

One of the few “Wellness” hotels in Rotterdam

The Mainport Design Hotel is a good choice for travelers who want to be near the Rotterdam Cruise Port while experiencing a relatively luxurious hotel. What sets this hotel apart from others in Rotterdam is the focus on wellness and spa services.

The rooms are modern, well designed and most have wonderful views over the city. There is a nice cafe/restaurant on the water and the Mainport is easily walkable to the city center.

It’s worth noting, however, that the walk to the cruise port is over the Erasmus Bridge. While this isn’t very far, for people carrying a lot of luggage or with mobility issues, this presents a logistical problem. There are of course cabs available as well as the Water Taxi that can take you across the river straight to the cruise terminal, but with other options right across the street from the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal, the Mainport really only makes sense for people who want to experience the wellness aspect of the hotel.

The James Hotel Rotterdam

Great location to explore Rotterdam

The James is a great & affordable choice to spend a few nights in Rotterdam before or after your next cruise. This hotel is situated in a great location for proximity to good food, shopping, and public transportation (Coolsingel, the Meent, and the Lijnbaan). A room can often be had for well under $200/night, which is a relative bargain in Rotterdam for this quality of a hotel.

The James is not convenient to the cruise terminal, so a cab will be necessary.

Why we love The James Hotel Rotterdam :

• Simple yet very comfortable rooms
• 24 hour “honor” market where you can grab a snack, beer, wine, coffee, etc.
• The location is perfect for exploring the city and surrounding areas
• Affordable!
• The bathrooms are lovely with great rain showers
• We love the modern yet art-deco-inspired public areas and well-appointed rooms with a view.

Citizen M – Rotterdam

Close to vibrant city center

Citizen M has always been a go-to brand for travel as they usually have nice and modern hotels near airports and in city centers throughout Europe.

These hotels have a funky concept of a modern design in a small space that just somehow works. These ironically feel a lot like a cruise ship cabin! So if you’re traveling to Rotterdam for a cruise, this is a great crash course on getting into that small space mindset 🙂

The Citizen M in central Rotterdam is a great location for exploring the city for a few days on either side of a cruise, as it’s near everything Rotterdam is known for including the cube houses, Markthal, and the harbor which is full of dining options and pubs.

You’ll need to get a cab to the cruise terminal or feel comfortable using public transportation (Metro), which will get you within a block of the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal.

Corporate Chain Hotels

If you’re looking to book well-known global hotel brands, there are a number of options in the Rotterdam area. Quite a few travelers will look to use their corporate chain points for free nights, just know that the big chain hotels in Rotterdam are a bit sterile and not in the most “fun” locations.

Many of the corporate chain hotels are close to the Cruise Port, however, the Hilton and Marriott are near Rotterdam Central Station, where a quick metro ride will get you close to the cruise terminal in just a few minutes.

Locals get around Rotterdam using public transport or bicycle; this is an easy city to navigate. Walk along busy canals, take a boat tour, hop on a water taxi, or ride the efficient tram network. If you want to head out of town to Kinderdijk to see the famous windmills, take the scenic waterbus. For Delft, home of the iconic blue-and-white pottery, it’s just a 15-minute train ride.

What are the local currency & tipping customs?

The currency in The Netherlands is the euro. There are ATMs throughout the city if you want cash, but contactless or credit card is the accepted way to pay in Europe. The Netherlands doesn’t have a big tipping culture, but you can leave 10 percent in restaurants for good service and round up taxi fares to the nearest euro. Tour guides don’t normally expect a tip, but a few euros is always appreciated.

De Cruise Terminal Rotterdam; ooit de plek waar landverhuizers vertrokken om het geluk elders te zoeken, nu een icoon in Rotterdam. De rijke historie, het golvende lijnenspel en het fenomenale uitzicht op de skyline van de stad, maakt het de ultieme locatie waar nationale en internationale gezelschappen maar wat graag een evenement organiseren.

Van 1873 tot midden 1970 was de Rotterdamse Wilhelminakade de thuishaven van de Holland-Amerika Lijn (H.A.L.). Bekende stoomschepen waaronder “De Rotterdam” brachten in deze periode duizenden passagiers van Rotterdam naar verre oorden. De Wilhelminakade werd hierdoor in de volksmond de ‘zakdoekjeskade’ genoemd. Veel passagiers werden door geliefden en familie uitgewuifd met meegebrachte zakdoekjes. Vandaag de dag wordt de Cruise Terminal Rotterdam, naast evenementenlocatie, nog altijd gebruikt als passagiersterminal voor alle cruiseschepen die Rotterdam aan doen.

Na het bombardement in de Tweede Wereldoorlog was een groot deel van het pand verwoest. De loodsen die direct na de bezetting als vervanging zijn geplaatst, zijn voor de architecten de uiteindelijke inspiratie geweest voor het ontwerp van de Cruise Terminal Rotterdam zoals we deze nu kennen. Zonder weelderige opsmuk en met veel glas, staal en beton.

Door het vele daglicht, de hoge plafonds en de vrij in te delen ruimte van zo’n 4000m2 is de Cruise Terminal Rotterdam geschikt voor vele verschillende evenementen. Van een ontvangst in de entreehal voor een congres of beurs tot een spetterend feest op de bovenverdieping. De ruimtes lenen zich uitstekend voor veel verschillende doeleinden. Zie de ruimte als een blank canvas welke geheel naar wens ingekleurd kan worden. Zakelijk en met strakke lijnen of juist kleurrijk en frivool.

Duurzaam aan én door de Maas

Duurzaamheid staat bij de Cruise Terminal Rotterdam hoog op de prioriteitenlijst. Zo wordt het water uit de naastgelegen rivier de Maas gebruikt om de ruimte te koelen. De verwarming is daarnaast stadsgereguleerd. Dit houdt in dat het water wordt opgewarmd door restwarmte van elektriciteitscentrales, grote fabrieken en afvalverbrandingsovens.
