I think the Cardiff area is such a varied place to visit, especially if you’re traveling with family. You can easily find something to suit everyone, particularly with the Cardiff day trips I’ve mentioned below!

From the beaches of Pembrokeshire to the fun time of Barry Island to hopping over the border to witness the majesty of Stonehenge. It’s all achievable within a couple of hours’ drive or train ride from Cardiff.

Best day trips from Cardiff, Wales

Explore the brecon beacons (bannau brycheiniog).

Want to head out of the city and spend some time in one of the country’s most beloved national parks? The Brecon Beacons , known in Welsh as Bannau Brychcheiniog, is full of exciting trails and natural beauty to explore. 

Whether you love hiking, mountain biking, fell running, or just wandering around looking at native flora and fauna, a visit to Bannau Bryncheiniog is a must when you’re next in the Cardiff area. If you’re looking for a longer stay, this national park is also a Dark Sky Reserve, so you can wait for the sun to go down and enjoy the starry show!

This is one of the best guided tours of the Brecon Beacons from Cardiff. On this tour you’ll get to visit six different waterfalls while exploring the beauty of the national park.

Have fun in the sun on Barry Island

Probably made famous by the hit comedy Gavin and Stacey, Barry Island is a family-favourite day trip from Cardiff. Filled with arcades, amusements, and a lovely beach to relax on, Barry Island is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of the city centre. 

You can easily spend a full-day trip out on the peninsula, as there are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars to keep you going throughout your trip. You can even go on a Gavin and Stacey tour if you loved the show!

Who doesn’t love visiting a castle or two while you’re on your holiday? Well, Wales has more castles per square foot than any country in the world – I think that’s pretty impressive! One of the best castles in the country has to be the majestic Caerphilly Castle .

With origins that go all the way back to the 13th century, Caerphilly Castle is actually the biggest castle in the whole of Wales. So, if you visit just one castle on your Cardiff day trip, this is the one that’s going to give you the most to do. Spanning 30 acres and with not one but two lakes, it’s an impressive estate to visit.

Learn about Roman history in Bath

If you’re looking to hop over the border from Wales into England, I’d personally recommend visiting the Roman city of Bath in neighbouring Somerset. It’s a city that has historic sights around every single corner. 

From the iconic Roman thermal baths to the architecturally-stunning Crescent area to the culturally-significant Jane Austen Centre , you’re sure to find a little something for everyone during a day trip to Bath. Honestly, you might need more than just a day trip to see everything I’ve mentioned here!

Kayak through the Wye Valley

Want to be surrounded by beautiful trees, valleys, and the sounds of nature? Head over to the Wye Valley on the border with England for a relaxing day out. In my opinion, one of the best ways to appreciate the area is by kayak.

You can find plenty of places that hire out kayaks and paddleboards throughout the valley, or if you have your own, there are a ton of accessible launching points. Take a slow paddle along the River Wye, taking in the expansive valley around you. It’s particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves are changing colour. 

Alternatively, if you’re looking for one of the best day tours from Cardiff, then check out this one of the Wye Valley and the Brecon Beacons. This is one of the best tours around which I highly recommend.

Head over the border to Bristol

Looking for a city with more of a quirky, independent vibe? Jump the border to the city of Bristol . Known for its creativity, Bristol offers a whole host of independent stores and eateries, making it the ideal place for a day trip.

Make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to explore the port and harbour area which has huge historical significance for the area. Also, a photo of the impressive Clifton Suspension Bridge is an essential part of visiting the city and gives you panoramic views of Bristol and the surrounding area. 

For me, this is one of the best coach trips from Cardiff and there are plenty of transport options to and from each city.

Enjoy the Pembrokeshire Coast

If you enjoy hiking, but want to take advantage of Wales’s stunning coastal views, look no further than the Pembrokeshire Coast. This particular stretch of the Wales Coastal Path takes you through gorgeous beach towns, including the popular holiday spot of Tenby.

In addition to cute and quirky beach towns, you can also benefit from panoramic views out across the Irish Sea. You can either enjoy a shorter day hike or indulge in a popular multi-day trek along this legendary Welsh trail. 

Learn to surf on the Gower Peninsula

With such a long coastline, you know that there are some amazing surf beaches in Wales. One of the best places to learn to surf in Wales is the Gower Peninsula , just a short journey from Cardiff. Whether you’re already shredding or need to learn the basics, there are plenty of surf schools and kit-hiring shops all around the area.

If you’re more advanced and looking for bigger and better waves, you’ll need to hit the beach during the winter months. Make sure you bring your thickest wetsuit and boots though – the waters get absolutely freezing around this time of year. 

Unleash your bookish side in Hay-on-Wye

If you’re looking for a more relaxing and slow-pace Cardiff day trip, I’d head straight to the charming and whimsical town of Hay-on-Wye. This beautiful town lies on the border with England and is probably best known for its love of books and literature.

Once you arrive, you’ll find rows of amazing bookstores and independent stores, and eateries. I can easily spend the whole day just wandering from one bookstore to the next! If you’re visiting around late May or early June, you’ll be able to experience the iconic Hay Festival , bringing together authors from all around the world.

Visit the birthplace of a King at Pembroke Castle

Consider yourself an expert on Tudor history? Well then, you absolutely have to make sure that Pembroke Castle is on your next Wales itinerary. As the birthplace of Henry VII – the first Tudor King – it’s a hugely important castle for both Welsh and English history fans.

It’s a stunning medieval castle with a glorious moat and grounds. You can wander around at your leisure or learn even more on a guided tour. At the end of your visit, enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake in the charming cafe area.

Have a typical British seaside day trip to Weston-Super-Mare

Whether you visit the Dylan Thomas Centre for a look around exhibits that bring history and culture to life or head out to the famous cottage where the poet spent a lot of his writing time, there’s a lot to love about a literary day trip to Swansea.

There is a ton of mythology and theory that surround the huge stone circle that is Stonehenge. As this ancient site is only a two-hour drive from central Cardiff, it’s well worth journeying out and seeing this majestic landmark up close. 

Thought to be built and erected around 2500 BC, the mystery surrounding how the stones got here and what they mean has prevailed for centuries. Was it for a Pagan ritual? Is it a coincidence? Were our ancestors super strong Gods? These are all popular theories around the mighty Stonehenge. 

To avoid the queues, make sure you get your Stonehenge ticket beforehand!

Boarding Points for Day Excursions

You can board your Johnsons Day Excursion from 40  local boarding points including Sutton Coldfield, Pype Hayes and Castle Bromwich in the north; Coventry, Warwick and Leamington in the east; Alvechurch and Barnt Green in the west; Evesham, Stratford-upon-Avon, Wellesbourne and Shipston-on-Stour in the south; and Birmingham and Solihull in the middle. Or you can park for free at our yard in Henley-in-Arden to join your day trip.

We provide full details and times for each Day Excursion so that you can clearly see what is included and how the Excursion has been designed to run. Reserved seating is provided on all day trips. Just choose your seat when you book – we find most people generally like to be near the front, so the earlier you book the better choice of seats you have.

What you can expect on board

Our wonderful fleet of coaches offer a luxury travelling experience with onboard entertainment and spacious seating. With air conditioning for the warmer months and heating to keep you toasty in the winter, we aim to provide total comfort for all our passengers whatever the season. Our large coaches are all fitted with toilets and seatbelts for our customer safety and convenience when on board. We have only run our services with our own high specification vehicles including minibuses to seat 6, right up to luxury charter coaches for 63 passengers.

Each of our coaches is driven and managed by one of our uniformed drivers. All of our drivers are enrolled in continuous training so you may rest assured that you are in the safest and most capable hands for your day trip by coach.

Irving’s Coaches have a huge number of day trips to choose from. Many of our trips are during school holidays so are a great way to have a day out with the family. Many of our trips are discounted attractions too, giving you an added incentive to book a day trip with us. Be sure to book early though to avoid disappointment. We have searched high and low to bring you new and exciting destinations as well as plenty of old favourites. We believe that you will be spoilt for choice and truly is something for everyone!

Our friendly, knowledgeable and professional drivers are at the very heart of the success of every JH Coaches tour and look forward to welcoming you on board.

Our fleet of modern coaches are fitted with seat belts and have the latest features for your added safety and comfort.

The programme includes trips operating from the beginning of March through to the end of December. You have a selection of 180 trips between the 10th March and the 15th December, featuring a great choice of interesting and unique destinations for all ages. Some of these trips include live shows, festivals, scenic tours, Christmas markets, special events and MORE. Take our NEW trip for example, The Valleys, Spells & Fells gives you the chance to visit the Boundary Outlet at Colne before heading to meet our guide. We will be taken to Whalley, England’s largest village before continuing through unforgettable countryside to Downham, home to many films and BBC drama series. We then ascend the famous Pendle Hill, long associated with the Lancashire witches and pass through Sabden village before ending with more stunning scenic views of the valley. We then have time at Oswaldtwistle Mills, this former weaving mill has over 100 retailers all under one roof. Or if you enjoy the countryside, we have our Bowness on Windermere Day Excursion. Plus, we have amazing family and children orientated trips with Wildlife Parks, Theme-parks and Museums all included in our new brochure! There really is something for everyone. COASTAL RESORTS

Family favourites, festive season, houses & gardens, retail therapy, scenic splendour, special events, trains, planes, boats, terms & conditions.

Some excursions have been planned many months in advance and unavoidably dates/details may change, so we reserve the right to amend any excursion or itinerary contained within this brochure or otherwise advertised. Should you need to cancel your place on one of our excursions once you have booked, a cancellation fee of £5 per person per excursion will apply. If the excursion(s) included admission fees, these may also be payable. All day excursions run to a minimum number. Where possible, we try to run all our excursions as advertised, however we reserve the right to cancel excursions should the numbers be too low. We will advise you as soon as possible prior to the departure date if we have had to cancel the excursion. Children are, unless otherwise stated, classed as being between the ages of 3 to 15 years old on the day of the excursion. Passengers over the age of 15 must, unless otherwise stated, pay the adult fare. Infants under the age of 3 years old are free to travel as long as they do not occupy a seat on the coach. If you wish for your infant to have their own seat then the child fare must be paid.

Moscow, Pullman baseball primed to make a splash at state tournament

May 15—For the Moscow and Pullman baseball teams, a year like this has been building for a while.

Guys like Tyson Izzo, Connor Isakson and Levi Anderson for Moscow, or Caleb Northcroft, Calvin Heusser and Cade Hill for Pullman, have suited up for the Bears and Greyhounds since they were underclassmen, often battling against bigger and more experienced teams day in and day out, year after year.

Now, Moscow and Pullman are the veteran-laden squads heading into their respective Idaho Class 4A and Washington Class 2A state tournaments this week.

"For the most part, this has been a long ride for all of them," Moscow coach Griffin Rod said. "When you take on a bunch of young players, you do it out of necessity. And now this is the year where it really transitioned (to veteran players). It's gratifying for me, but I'm sure it's even more for them."

In other classifications across the two states, Kendrick and Orofino enter their state tourneys as district champs and Asotin and Pomeroy are already underway.

Here's a full look at state baseball for the area:

No. 2 seed Bears riding a big winning streak

Few teams are hotter than the Bears (17-7), who enter the 4A state tournament on a 10-game winning streak that includes a championship run in their district tournament.

No. 2 seed Moscow opens State against No. 7 seed Minico at 9 a.m. Pacific on Thursday at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.

It was a long, steady grind to get to this period of late-season dominance for the Bears. Last year, Moscow snuck into the state tournament with a losing record only to leave with an 0-2 mark at State.

That left the Bears — who returned all but one player from that team — wanting more this time around.

"When we started this season, we just had a renowned focus on growing our offense and creating a different type of team approach because we felt that was the piece that was missing," Rod said. "We had good pitching, we played great defense, we just weren't able to put up enough runs."

That all changed this season. Now, the Bears still boast their great pitching and defense, plus they can score runs in bunches.

Moscow is led by speedy leadoff man JP Breese (.447 average, 19 stolen bases), consistent cleanup hitter Anderson (.406 average, 29 RBI) and the powerful bat of Ethan McLaughlin (four home runs).

Izzo at catcher and Isakson in the outfield give the Bears some of the best fielders in the business. And Anderson (6-2, 0.83 ERA) also doubles as Moscow's ace pitcher.

Pullman will play defending champs

The No. 9 seed Greyhounds get a tough draw to start the Washington 2A state tourney.

Pullman (18-4) faces two-time defending state champ and eighth-seeded Tumwater (18-6) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Auburn High School.

But, like Moscow, the Greyhounds are hoping their veteran-laden roster will pay off in the postseason.

Pullman's roster features 10 total seniors and three juniors who have played varsity ball since their freshman seasons.

The Greyhounds enter State as both the regular-season champ and the district tournament champ out of the 2A Greater Spokane League.

"They've played together for a long time. They all get along really well," Pullman coach Kevin Agnew said. "Every time we've needed somebody to step up, a different guy's done it, and hopefully that continues this weekend."

Pullman's strength starts with its pitching with the one-two punch of Northcroft (6-0, 0.62 ERA) and Heusser (7-1, 1.98 ERA).

"We've won a lot of doubleheaders this year because we have two good guys throwing for us," Agnew said.

The team's vocal leaders also include team captain Hill and Joey Hecker.

And no player has seen more plate appearances than Brayden Randall, who leads the team with 28 runs.

Whitepine League dominates 1A

No baseball league in Idaho has been more dominant over the last three decades than the Whitepine League.

The last time a WPL team didn't win the 1A state championship was 1998, when Greenleaf Friends took the crown — a school that has long since discontinued its baseball program.

The WPL's four teams vying for the title this year at Capital High School in Boise include Kendrick (15-7), the district champs; Troy (15-5), the two-time defending state champs; Potlatch (15-7) and Clearwater Valley (13-13).

Each of the last two years, it's been an all-WPL semifinals.

Players like Kendrick's Hunter Taylor (37 runs, 27 hits) and Troy's Makhi Durrett (.554 average, 31 hits, 20 RBI) are among those to watch heading into State.

"I've been really proud of these guys, the way they've worked hard to be able to get there," Kendrick coach Kyle Jones said after the Tigers topped Troy in their district title game. "It's been a really cool ride and we're just excited to keep it rolling."

The opening round begins today with Kendrick facing Idaho City at 8 a.m. Pacific, Clearwater Valley facing Lighthouse Christian at 11 a.m. Pacific, Potlatch facing Glenns Ferry at 2 p.m. Pacific and Troy facing Vision Charter at 5 p.m. Pacific.

Maniacs enter with 22-2 record with Grangeville right on their heels

Orofino wasn't perfect this season, but it was close to it.

The Maniacs (22-2) are making their fourth straight trip to the 2A state tournament and they're hoping this is the time they'll come home with a championship trophy. They will face Firth (16-11) at 11:30 a.m. Pacific on Thursday in Pocatello in the first round.

Joining them in the 2A tourney is conference-foe Grangeville, which Orofino defeated 4-3 in extra innings in their district tournament championship. The Bulldogs (21-4) play defending-champion Malad (14-8) at 5 p.m. Pacific on Thursday.

"We're grateful for the opportunity to go down and be one of the eight teams in the tournament," Orofino coach Scotty Tondevold said. "We have six seniors (and) this will be their fourth year in a row going to the state tournament. ... The guys are excited and they should be."

Orofino's biggest strength might be its balanced roster. Aiden Olive (46 runs) and Jaeger Tondevold (38) are the scoring leaders, Dash Barlow and Bodey Howell pace the group with 30 RBI apiece and Silas Naranjo does a bit of everything.

The Maniacs also have five core pitchers who "could go out there on any day and do a (great) job for us," Tondevold said.

Asotin, Pomeroy already underway

The Washington state tournaments for Pomeroy (1B) and Asotin (2B) are already underway.

On Tuesday, the Pirates were eliminated in the first round by Orcas Island 2-1 and the Panthers defeated Liberty Bell 2-1 in their respective tourneys. More information about those games can be found in the Tribune's area roundup.
