Carnival cruise ship rescues 25 people stranded off the coast of Mexico

A Carnival Cruise Line ship responded to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard and rescued 25 people stranded in a small boat off the coast of Mexico, the company announced Saturday.

The 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance had left Long Beach, California, on Friday and was heading toward Ensenada Mexico for a three-day sailing when the cruise ship's officers were informed by the Coast Guard "about a distress call involving a small vessel," a news release said.

The ship immediately routed toward the location of the vessel, provided by the USCG, and "quickly" rescued all 25 people on board, including three children, the company said.

The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

The rescued group was welcomed onto the cruise ship and given food, water, and medical assistance. Carnival coordinated with the Coast Guard to hand off the group.

The incident did not disrupt the Carnival Radiance's schedule, the company announced.

Another Carnival ship rescued a group of 28 Cuban nationals stuck at sea as it was sailing the Caribbean and saw people signaling for help in late April. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time. Also last month, a Celebrity Cruises ship sailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to multiple destinations in the Caribbean rescued a small vessel adrift between Mexico and Cuba.

Feces, water reported on floor of disabled Carnival cruise ship in Gulf of Mexico

Coast Guard on mission to get disabled boat back to U.S.

Conditions appear to be worsening on the Carnival cruise that has been floating aimlessly about 150 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula after a fire erupted in the aft engine room Sunday, knocking out the ship’s propulsion system.

"There's water and feces all over the floor," said Brent Nutt, who was told about the conditions by his wife who is a passenger on board. "It's not the best conditions. You would think Carnival would have something in place to get these people off the ship."

Passengers also are getting sick and throwing up, he said, adding that his wife told him: "The whole boat stinks extremely bad."

To be sure, passengers aboard a cruise vessel stranded in the Gulf of Mexico have limited access to bathrooms, food and hot coffee, and were just given a new destination: Mobile, Ala.

Carnival Cruise Lines President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in a statement Monday that the Carnival Triumph had drifted so far north of its original position that it will be towed to the southern U.S. port, instead of the original plan to take it to Progreso, Mexico.

More On This...

Jimmy Mowlam told The Associated Press on Tuesday that his son Rob and new daughter-in-law got married onboard the Carnival Triumph on Saturday and are among the roughly 3,100 stranded passengers.

He says his son told him by phone Monday night that many passengers are sleeping on deck because the lack of ventilation made it too hot to sleep inside.

He says his son says passengers were mostly "taking it in stride."

Cahill said strong Gulf currents caused the Triumph to drift about 90 miles north of its original position off the Yucatan Peninsula.

Cahill's statement said the ship should arrive in Mobile on Thursday and that the change will allow for less complicated re-entry for passengers without passports.

The ship left Texas last Thursday on a scheduled four-day cruise with 3,143 passengers and a crew of 1,086.

Two tugboats arrived on the scene of the stranded vessel Tuesday to tow it to Mobile. Besides the two tugs, at least two other Carnival cruise ships have been diverted to the Triumph to leave supplies, and a Coast Guard cutter reportedly was at the scene. The Coast Guard has informed Mexican authorities of the situation in their waters, a spokesman said.

Melinda Ramos, meanwhile, said her father was laughing when she briefly spoke to him Sunday.

"He might be completely joking, but he said they're sleeping in tents outside," the 19-year-old daughter of Mary and Matt Ramos told The Houston Chronicle.

A similar situation occurred on a Carnival cruise ship in November 2010. That vessel was also stranded for three days with 4,500 people aboard after a fire in the engine room. When the passengers disembarked in San Diego they described a nightmarish three days in the Pacific with limited food, power and bathroom access.

Carnival said in a statement that it had cancelled the Triumph's next two voyages scheduled to depart Monday and Saturday. Passengers aboard the stranded ship will also receive a full refund, the statement said.

Stranded cruise ship on which 'sewage ran down the walls' and 'savages' fought over food finally docks amid jubilant scenes

A nightmare cruise, in which passengers were reportedly left fighting over food on a vessel caked in urine and raw sewage , has finally come to an end.

Cheering passengers lined the deck and the ship blasted its horn several times in celebration as the 14-storey cruise ship Carnival Triumph made its final docking approach after five days stranded in the Gulf of Mexico.

Conditions on board rapidly deteriorated during that time, with passengers using mobile phones to convey tales of carpets soaked in urine and passengers sleeping in tents on deck.

Food supplies are said to have run low, with passengers forced to queue for hours for cold onion and cucumber sandwiches, and there were also reports of fights breaking out as groups of “savages” fought over the dwindling supplies.

Speaking to CNN, passenger Ann Barlow said: “It’s disgusting. It’s the worst thing ever”, while her husband Toby told the news channel there was “sewage running down the walls and floors”, with passengers asked to defecate in plastic bags and urinate in showers due to their being only five working toilets between 4,200 people.

It is believed there was also no electricity or air conditioning on board.

But the mood on board was far more celebratory today, as passengers danced on the decks and displayed homemade Valentine’s cards as the ship docked at the Alabama cruise terminal in Mobile.

About an hour after the ship pulled up at 9.15pm local time, a steady stream of passengers began making their way down the glass-enclosed gang plank, some in wheelchairs and others pulling carry-on luggage. One man gave the thumbs up.

For 24-year-old Brittany Ferguson of Texas, not knowing how long passengers had to endure their time aboard was the worst part.

“I'm feeling awesome just to see land and buildings,” said Ferguson, who was in a white robe given to her aboard. “The scariest part was just not knowing when we'd get back”.

It took six gruelling hours navigating the roughly 30-mil) ship channel to dock, guided by at least four towboats. Nearly 900 feet in length, it was the largest cruise ship ever to dock at Mobile.

And even once it is stable, it will take four to five hours for all the 3,000 passengers to be off, said Carnival senior vice president of marketing Terry Thornton.

Buses started leaving the raucous terminal earlier today, with up to 100 reserved to carry passengers on either a seven-hour ride to the Texan cities of Galveston or Houston, or a two-hour trip to New Orleans.

“I can't imagine being on that ship this morning and then getting on a bus,” said Kirk Hill, whose 30-year-old daughter, Kalin Christine Hill, is on the cruise. “If I hit land in Mobile, you'd have a hard time getting me on a bus.”

Yesterday the 4,200 passengers and crew members suffered another setback with towline issues that brought the vessel to a dead stop for about an hour just when it was getting close to port.

As the vessel drew into range of mobile phone signal Thursday, passengers vented their anger.

Renee Shanar, of Houston, was on board with her husband, who she said has heart trouble. They were told they will be among the first to disembark, she said.

“I don't believe them; they've been lying to us from the beginning,” Shanar said.

Disgusted by the foul air and heat on the lower decks, many passengers hauled mattresses and bed sheets onto the top deck and slept there, even staying put in a soaking rain. As the ship approached the coast, a slew of Carnival workers removed the bedding and took it downstairs.

“Today they cleaned the ship, they're serving better food, covering up basically, but at least they're making it more bearable,” said Kalin Hill, of Houston, who boarded the Triumph as part of a bachelorette party.

In a text message, though, she described deplorable conditions over the past few days.

“The lower floors had it the worst, the floors 'squish' when you walk and lots of the lower rooms have flooding from above floors,” Hill wrote. “Half the bachelorette party was on two; the smell down there literally chokes you and hurts your eyes.”

She said “there's poop and urine all along the floor. The floor is flooded with sewer water ... and we had to poop in bags.”

The company disputed the accounts of passengers who described the ship as filthy, saying employees were doing everything to ensure people were comfortable.

Some travel agents said cruise prices and bookings have not been affected by the disabled Carnival ship, but others in the industry say it's too early to tell.

Thelbert Lanier was waiting at the Mobile port for his wife, who texted him yesterday.

“Room smells like an outhouse. Cold water only, toilets haven't work in 3 1/2 days. Happy Valentines Day!!! I love u & wish I was there,” she said in the text message, which was viewed by The Associated Press. “It's 4:00 am. Can't sleep...it's cold & I'm starting to get sick.”

No one was injured in the fire aboard, but a passenger with a pre-existing medical condition was taken off the ship as a precaution. In addition, the Coast Guard said in a statement Thursday that it evacuated a passenger who reportedly suffered a stroke.

Carnival said the original plan was to tow the ship to Progreso, Mexico, because it was the closest port, but by the time tugboats arrived, the ship had drifted about 90 miles north due to strong currents, putting it nearly equidistant to Mobile. It was also logistically easier for the company, which said costs were not a factor.

Carnival Cruise Lines has cancelled a dozen more planned voyages aboard the Triumph and acknowledged the crippled ship had been plagued by other mechanical problems in the weeks before the engine-room blaze. The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation.

Gulliksen said the Triumph's recent mechanical woes involved an electrical problem with the ship's alternator on the previous voyage. Repairs were completed Feb. 2, and the problem was not related to the fire, he said.

Passengers were supposed to get a full refund and discounts on future cruises, and on Wednesday Carnival announced they would each get an additional $500 in compensation.

Carnival cruise ship rescues 2 shipwrecked men stranded on kayak in Gulf of Mexico

Two men stranded on a kayak in the Gulf of Mexico were rescued by the Carnival Jubilee cruise ship Monday.

The cruise team spotted the men off Isla Mujeres, Mexico, on their scheduled route from Texas to the western Caribbean,  Carnival said in a news release .

A stranded man is rescued in the Gulf of Mexico.

The men ended up in the middle of the ocean after their boat sank, and they relied on a kayak for survival. They received first aid, food and a medical evaluation once they were safely aboard the cruise ship.

The cruise ship contacted the Mexican navy and transferred the men to its custody shortly after the rescue. Officials have not released their identities.

Cruise ship adrift in Gulf of Mexico for 3 days

February 12, 2013 / 2:00 PM EST / CBS/AP

HOUSTON Passengers aboard a cruise vessel stranded in the Gulf of Mexico after a weekend engine fire have limited access to bathrooms, food and hot coffee, but also a new destination: Mobile, Ala.

Carnival Cruise Lines President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in a statement Monday that the Carnival Triumph had drifted so far north of its original position that it will be towed to the southern U.S. port, instead of the original plan to take it to Progreso, Mexico.

Cahill said strong Gulf currents caused the Triumph to drift about 90 miles north of its original position off the Yucatan Peninsula.

Cahill's statement said the ship should arrive in Mobile on Thursday and that the change will allow for less complicated re-entry for passengers without passports.

CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg said on "CBS This Morning" that the waste management system was powered by electricity, and with electricity out on the ship, there is a danger of it turning into "a floating biohazard" before it reaches Alabama.

The Carnival Triumph had been floating aimlessly about 150 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula since a fire erupted in the aft engine room early Sunday, knocking out the ship's propulsion system. No one was injured and the fire was extinguished. The ship has been operating on backup generator power since the incident, the statement said.

The ship, which left Galveston, Texas, on Thursday and was scheduled to return there Monday, will instead be towed to Mobile with its 3,143 passengers 1,086 crew members. They are due to arrive in Alabama on Thursday.

One tugboat arrived Monday afternoon, and the other was expected later in the evening, Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen said in an email. The Coast Guard has informed Mexican authorities of the situation in their waters, a spokesman said.

When another Carnival cruise ship, the Legend, rendezvoused with the stranded vessel Monday, supplying Triumph passengers with food and supplies, Texas resident Brent Nutt was able to briefly chat with his wife, Bethany, who could draw a cellphone signal from the visiting cruise line.

Without power, the ship's stabilizers are apparently not working, Nutt told The Associated Press, and the massive liner had been leaning to one side Sunday. By Monday afternoon, the ship seemed more upright, he said.

carnival, cruise, triumph, adrift, gulf of mexico

"She sounded a whole lot better today than she did yesterday," Nutt said about two hours after chatting with his 32-year-old wife.

Passengers were also given food, Nutt said, and some of the bathrooms are working. But the ship is dirty, Nutt said his wife told him.

"There's water and feces all over the floor," Nutt relayed. "It's not the best conditions. You would think Carnival would have something in place to get these people off the ship."

Passengers also are getting sick and throwing up, he said, adding that his wife told him: "The whole boat stinks extremely bad."

In the past, Carnival had compounded its public relations problems by only offering 20-percent discounts on the next cruise to stranded passengers, but it apparently learned its lesson this time, CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg told "CBS This Morning."

However, even with a full refund, Carnival faces a problem when the 3,100 passengers reach southern Alabama, which was not their original destination. Getting those thousands of people home via an airport with only regional jets is likely to cause another slew of problems.

Crew members of a Carnival cruise ship rescued two men stranded in the Gulf of Mexico Monday.

Workers aboard the Carnival Jubilee spotted the pair paddling in a small yellow and orange kayak off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

The men paddled the kayak alongside the large cruise ship and the crew helped them up onto the vessel, according to the cruise line and photos of the rescue.

They said their boat had sank and they used the kayak to stay afloat, Carnival said in a statement.

Once safely aboard the cruise ship, the pair were evaluated by Carnival’s medical staff and given first aid as well as food and water.

Crew members let Carnival’s fleet operation center staff in Miami know of their rescue and both contacted Mexican Navy officials. They arranged a transfer and a Navy boat came to pick up the two kayakers soon after the initial rescue, Carnival said.

Two men paddle in a kayak in the ocean.

The cruise ship then continued with its voyage — heading to Mahogany Bay, Roatan which it visited on Tuesday.

The rescue is the second time a Carnival ship has saved people stranded in the ocean in a little more than a month.

Crew on the Carnival Vista ship rescued six men who were floating on a life raft in the dark ocean off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 13.

The captain received an emergency alert about the stranded men and immediately steered the ship towards them — and away from its planned course — to save them.

Crew members look out the door as a ship pulls up.

Carnival officers aboard the ship spotted the men on a bright orange, reflective life raft through the darkness of the early morning and brought them aboard the ship.

The men’s small cargo vessel had capsized overnight and another six who were on the boat were on another life raft — which was later located and rescued by the Coast Guard.

The dramatic rescue was filmed by a Carnival Vista passenger who posted the clip to TikTok. One person off-camera can be heard exclaiming how “insane” the experience was in the video.

Carnival cruise ship rescues 2 men stranded in the Gulf of Mexico

carnival cruise stranded in gulf of mexico

Two men who went on a leisurely boat ride Monday returned to shore in a much different way than they left it, both physically, and likely, mentally.

The pair had set off to sea in a boat that ended up sinking, forcing them to rely on a kayak to stay afloat in the Gulf of Mexico's open sea.

But to their luck, crew members aboard a  Carnival Jubilee  cruise ship spotted the stranded floaters and quickly rescued them from their secondary form of transportation, floating in the waters off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, the  cruise  line said.

Video from one person aboard shows as the men paddled toward the massive ship's side before crew members helped pull them aboard.

The cruise line said the men, whose names haven't been released, were then evaluated by the ship's medical staff and given first aid and water while the ship's team and Carnival's Fleet Operation Center staff in Miami arranged a transfer with Mexican Navy officials. That was completed shortly after the rescue, Carnival said.

The ship, which departed from Galveston, Texas, on Saturday, then set to continue its regular travel itinerary Tuesday, heading to Mahogany Bay, Roatan in Honduras.

This isn't the first time a Carnival ship has rescued shipwrecked travelers.

Just  last month , the Carnival Vista crew saved six men who became stranded in waters near the Dominican Republic when their small cargo vessel capsized overnight. The men had been on a life raft when crew members found and rescued them.

The rescue occurred about a month after a similar incident in which the Carnival Vista team saved six men stranded in the ocean near the Dominican Republic after a small cargo vessel capsized.

The Carnival Jubilee will continue on its scheduled route.

Carnival Radiance Rescue

The Carnival Radiance’s team responded to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and rescued 25 people who were stranded aboard a small boat off the Pacific coast of Mexico on Saturday.

According to a statement, the Carnival Radiance was sailing toward Ensenada, Mexico on Saturday afternoon when the Coast Guard informed the officers on board about a distress call involving a small vessel.

The ship was immediately routed toward the location provided by the USCG and the rescue was quickly completed, with all 25 people, including three children, stranded on the boat safely welcomed onto Carnival Radiance.

The team onboard offered to meet any immediate needs among the rescued group, including food, water and medical assistance, and coordinated a rendezvous with Coast Guard officials.

The Carnival Radiance left its homeport of Long Beach, Calif. on Friday for a three-day cruise, and its sailing remains on schedule.

Carnival Cruise Line shares details on life or death situation

A hotel has no obligation to people who pass by its doors. Caesars and MGM Resorts International don’t have to feed the homeless people who sleep and ask for money outside its resort casinos, and no New York (or any other city) hotel chain has to take responsibility for people in perilous situations outside their doors.

That’s not the case with cruise ships. A ship at sea has a legal obligation to help other vessels in need and rescues happen fairly often. That might mean helping a commercial ship having engine trouble, or it could mean rescuing people on a vessel in imminent danger of sinking, or being stranded at sea.

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald shared details of a recent rescue on his popular Facebook page.

“Carnival Radiance’s team responded to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and rescued 25 people who were stranded aboard a small boat off the Pacific coast of Mexico on Saturday (May 25),” he shared. Carnival Radiance was sailing toward Ensenada, Mexico on Saturday afternoon when the Coast Guard informed the officers on board about a distress call involving a small vessel.”

The crew of the ship responded quickly to help those in danger.

“The ship was immediately routed toward the location provided by the USCG and the rescue was quickly completed, with all 25 people, including three children, stranded on the boat safely welcomed onto Carnival Radiance. The team on board offered to meet any immediate needs among the rescued group, including food, water and medical assistance, and coordinated a rendezvous with Coast Guard officials,” Heald added.

Carnival Radiance, which sails out of Long Beach, Calif., left May 24 on a three-day cruise and despite the rescue, remained on its planned schedule.

Carnival pushes back on social media comments

Heald also responded to some ugly comments on his Facebook page that questioned why the cruise line helped the distressed ship. He also made it clear what happens to the rescued people.

“They do not get a free cruise. They do not get to walk around the Ship in any guest areas or even crew area. They are confined to one area, under the watch of our security team,” he said. “They are given food, water, and medical assistance. They are transferred to a United States Coast Guard ship.”

Heald noted that Carnival Radiance’s crew did what it had to do and the morally right thing.

“Yes, we do have to rescue them because it is the law. Yes, we rescue them because it is the right thing to do,” he added.

Carnival's Heald gets angry

Some of the comments on Heald’s page implied that the cruise line was making a “woke” political decision. The brand ambassador pushed back heavily on that idea.

“This is not political, this is not ‘it’s not fair. They are getting a free cruise and being allowed into our country and Carnival Cruise Line should be ashamed,’” he wrote. “The people who should be ashamed, are the people who who feel we should always leave people in peril on the sea to remain so.”

Heald, who normally maintains a playful tone, could not hide his disgust in this situation.

“Sometimes, I think we are all doomed,” he added.

Most of the comments on Heald's post were supportive.

"John, it is the right thing to do. And the law. Thank you for clarifying for those who are trying to make this political. Great job to the crew and Captain. Thank you John," wrote Angie Sims Grogan.

Other commenters were outraged at anyone who would think the cruise line was doing anything other than its duty.

"Who in their right mind would think they are getting a free cruise that’s insane. They were in a life and death situation. Carnival did what they should and were human beings helping other human beings," added Christy L. Wallace.

Posen carnival canceled indefinitely after large fights lead to arrests: BODYCAM VIDEO

POSEN, Ill. (WLS) -- For decades, this village of fewer than 6,000 residents has hosted an early summer festival, but officials say that annual carnival is now history.

In south suburban Posen, there was a reluctant, but unanimous vote on the future of a popular family summer gathering on Tuesday night.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

"It's a clear reality that the carnival cannot continue to be held in Posen," the Posen Park District president said.

The park district board voted to cancel the Posen Park Fest next summer and beyond after this year's carnival was marred by violence .

"It has to be done. The safety is too great. It's just, unfortunately, not worth having," said Posen Director of Parks and Recreation Terrence Whitcomb.

Posen police released bodycam video of officers Sunday evening arriving to break up a brawl of mostly teens who came from outside the community, officials said.

At least four people were arrested in the incident, which came days after another large fight led to the arrest of a carnival-goer who allegedly had a loaded gun in a backpack.

"They were checking bags to enter, but you can't bag-check people's fists, and you can't stop people from hopping a fence," Whitcomb said.

Posen is just the latest suburb to cancel part or all of a family festival out of safety concerns.

In recent weeks, carnivals were scrapped in northwest suburban Huntley and Lake In the Hills .

"You don't want to take the fun away from everybody just because there's a few bad apples that come from other towns causing trouble. It's not fair," said Posen resident Susan Adema.

And last summer, Tinley Park canceled the final day of its Armed Forces weekend carnival after fights broke out in a crowd of hundreds of teens.

"I know a number of other communities in the area do carnivals and festivals, and I'm worried for them," Whitcomb said.

In lieu of the carnival, Posen park district officials say they hope to organize smaller summer events.
