Does Carnival offer connecting rooms in 2+3 configuration?

Cool Cruiser

There are five of us traveling - two parents and three kids. I thought Carnival offered connecting rooms in a 2+3 configuration, with the two parents in one room and our kids next door in a room with a door that connects inside to our room.

I can even see that configuration available on the Carnival website on their Conquest class ships.

But I talked to a Carnival customer service agent last night and she said that they do not offer that in their Conquest class ships. That any room with three beds does not adjoin to a room with two beds.

Has anyone done this? Had three in one room and two in another and had them adjoin, while on a Conquest class Carnival ship?

We're going to the Caribbean next summer, on a 7-day cruise, so I'm trying to get connecting rooms since our youngest will only be 7 years old.

The deck plans will be more accurate than any customer service representative, many of whom have never been on a cruise before. If the room allows you to book three and it has the connecting stateroom symbol, just ask any CSR or PVP to book those two staterooms. As long as they are available, you'll be fine.

Funny you should ask. We just booked less than an hour ago on the Dream for August. Four adults and a 2 and 4 year old. Our PVP got us 2 oceanview rooms that connect. They have the regular bed configuration and a sleeper sofa. Don't know if this is on other ships but it is on the dream. Hope this helps.

jeta62

We just got off the fantasy and had connecting ocean view rooms. Both rooms only had two beds but there was also a cot under the bed. So you could always do that if there under it. They made our room a king and the kids had singles. It was perfect! Good luck

We just booked the same for July 6 on the Dream, 2 Premium OV connecting doors with sleeper sofa in each...1315/1319...Dennis

We were on Triumph in May with our 3 kids in a connecting room. A roll away bed was used for the 3rd person in that room.

jcearth

The are many configurations connecting 2+3 for Oceanview and Balcony rooms, but not for Inside rooms on the Conquest class ships. Were you looking to book inside cabins? If that was the case, then they do not have connecting configurations. Otherwise, you are fine.

Ontario_Cruiser

This is correct. I have booked my family of 6 in 2 connecting Ocean view rooms on both the Freedom and Liberty. There is no reason why one of these could not have had 2 people.

I have searched but not found any interiors that connect - except for some on deck 6 that only hold 2 people in each.

We booked connecting GSs for next July. We will have two in each room but they did say I could add another if we needed. Maybe that's an option.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

I was trying to book oceanview rooms. then when the 3+2 wasn't available (this was on the Glory), she suggested inside. But it wasn't available for that category, either.

I'll check the Dream.

This wasn't "just" a customer service rep. I should have been more specific. She's a PVP with Carnival and has been there a long time. She's a friend of a friend.

Perhaps they were sold out on the sailing you were looking at? This is certainly a possibility.

She said they weren't sold out, that that configuration simply didn't exist.

dcgrumpy

We're a family of 5 and I've been pricing cruises for next summer. Dream, Magic, Breeze and Sunshine all have connecting OV rooms that will sleep 5. Dream, Magic and Breeze even have a porthole(interior) that connects with an OV that will sleep 5.

I rang Carnival to book the same configuration (3+2) for this August on the Liberty. This was last year so certainly not last minute....the category included staterooms on Riviera and main decks. However the lady I spoke to spent about 2 hours trying to find us an adjoining stateroom. The deck plans showed availability but when she tried to book the rooms they system would not allow her to do it.

Eventually she had success although they are not rooms I would have particularly chosen because they are in the aft of the ship on Riviera deck, even though there was availability in the midship main deck for the same cost she couldn't do it. We have a little girl who is seven months and 2 older children so we needed the rooms to connect so we were just grateful in the end that she managed to find them.

The rooms are ov with sofas in both.

Hope this helps

They have the regular bed configuration and a sleeper sofa.

I had an interior room with a porthole on the Breeze last year that connected to another room, but I do not know if that room was also an interior with a porthole or an OV. My room had two beds and the couch that could be used as a bed.

Warm Breezes

We were originally booked in connecting OV 2/3 person rooms on our Carnival Freedom cruise last year. I upgraded to connecting balcony 2/3 person rooms.

  • 2 months later...

I ended up booking on the Dream, out of NOLA, so I'm happy. Got the 3+2 config that we needed, oceanview rooms.

I just looked at a Carnival deck plan for the Glory and there ARE some options for a double and a triple, but not many. There are 2 cabins in a category 6A - they are 1424 (double) and 1422 (triple) also a set in category 6C - 2336 (double) and 2332 (triple).

I know that Carnival usually has restrictions about booking less people in the cabin than the cabin would hold, especially during high seasons, like the summer. I DID see a lot of connecting cabins that were both triple cabins, but Carnival would probably not allow you to put 2 people in a double cabin.

I have given you two options above, maybe one of them will work with the date you are looking for.

Like a tapestry woven with different threads, each line attracts a unique blend of passengers, creating a vibrant mosaic of age groups.

Carnival Cruise Line, with its playful spirit and lively atmosphere, appeals to a younger crowd, while Holland America Line exudes elegance and sophistication, drawing in a more mature clientele.

Family and group bookings continue to gain traction in the cruise industry, prompting cruise lines to invest in adjoining rooms and connecting cabins. It’s worth comparing the cost of connecting cabins as an alternative to a stateroom or suite. Depending on the size of your family or group you can save money and still get the comfortable configuration you desire.

Newer ships provide the greater array of accommodation options. On some ships there are a limited number of family-friendly staterooms. Book early to avoid disappointment, especially if you plan to travel during school holidays.

Family’s $15k carnival cruise vacation canceled just 2 days prior, without their knowledge, after sharing booking number on facebook.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A Kentucky family’s $15,000 Carnival Cruise vacation they had been planning for a year was canceled just two days before the ship was set to sail after they accidentally shared their booking number online in a case of identity theft.

Tiffany Banks was devastated to learn that her trip aboard the Carnival Celebration ship with her husband and their four kids was canceled without her knowledge the day before the family was going to fly to Florida to leave on the boat.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

Tiffany Banks

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship’s largest room — the Excel Presidential Suite — through the online system.

The mom and nurse practitioner said she went into “a full-blown panic” and she and her four kids were all in tears.

“We have nearly $15,000 tied up in for this vacation including excursions. The room itself was I think $12,000 or $13,000, and then we’ve got a few grand tied up in excursions, and actually with almost $2,000 for flights,” she said in a May 12 TikTok video.

Banks said she never canceled the trip and wondered if it was a system glitch.

Carnival said the room they had booked was now reserved by another customer and offered the family two interior rooms — the cheapest on the ship — instead, but the mom did not feel it was an adequate replacement.

Carnival also refused to offer a full refund as its cancellation policy states that no money will be returned within 15 days of the cruise date.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyway, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

They instead stayed at an Airbnb in the Sunshine State, hoping to make the best of their change of plans while the mom shared frustrating updates on TikTok.

In one clip, she responded to “haters” who accused her of hiding things or not sharing the full story.

“I’m an open book. I talk too much. I give out too much information — that’s just me naturally,” she said in remarks that would become an ironic prediction of what was to come in the saga.

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship's largest room -- the Excel Presidential Suite -- through the online system.

A few days later, Carnival called Banks back with an explanation of how her long-awaited cruise trip was canned.

The cruise line told Banks that she was the “victim of a form of identity theft” but that there was no security breach on Carnival’s part, according to a recording of the call she shared on TikTok.

Banks and her husband accidentally shared their cruise booking reference number when posting a screenshot of an email with the countdown to their vacation on Facebook a few weeks out, according to the clip.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyways, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

The same day they posted the booking number on Facebook, someone created an online Carnival account and added the number to their profile.

Then, 48 hours before the cruise sail date, the person canceled the family’s entire cabin booking, the Carnival rep told Banks in the recording.

Banks said Carnival told her that it believes the IP address of the person who canceled was in British Columbia but it was unable to get an identity of the fraudster.

The company offered her future cruise credit for $10,404 contingent on the mom posting on social media “something to the effect of Carnival has now resolved the issue.”

But Banks said she wasn’t interested and questioned the ease with which someone was able to take over her booking with no verification process.

“We’re not sailing with Carnival ever again,” she said.

The Post reached out to Carnival but did not immediately receive a response.

Interconnecting Cabins on Cruise Ships

Interconnecting Cabins on Cruise Ships

When it comes to cruising, one of the fascinating features are the interconnecting cabins through specially designed doors. This unique feature offers a myriad of benefits for families, friends, or larger groups traveling together, providing convenience, flexibility, and a sense of togetherness.

The Concept

The concept behind interconnecting cabins is to create a seamless connection between two or more separate cabins, allowing guests to move freely between them while still maintaining their individual privacy. By simply opening the door between two cabins, passengers can create a shared living space, making it easier to socialise and spend quality time with loved ones. This connectivity is especially beneficial for families with young children, as parents can maintain a close watch over their kids while enjoying a larger combined space.

Design and Structure

The interconnecting doors are intelligently designed to blend seamlessly with the overall cabin layout. The cabins involved in the interconnecting configuration are typically located side by side or in close proximity to each other. The connecting doors are constructed to facilitate easy passage between the cabins without compromising safety or security.

Privacy and Accessibility

While interconnecting doors offer the benefits of connectivity and shared space, they also prioritise privacy and accessibility. These doors are designed to ensure a soundproof barrier between cabins, reducing noise and disturbances. Privacy remains paramount, and passengers can enjoy the solitude and tranquility of their individual cabins whenever desired. Additionally, the doors are typically equipped with secure locking mechanisms, granting passengers control over access and ensuring a sense of security throughout their voyage.

Flexibility

Interconnecting doors offer flexibility, allowing guests to tailor their cabin configuration according to their needs. Whether it’s a small family requiring two adjoining cabins or a larger group wishing to combine multiple cabins, interconnecting doors can accommodate various arrangements. This flexibility is a significant advantage, ensuring that guests can create their ideal living space.

Booking Interconnecting Cabins

To enjoy the convenience of interconnecting cabins on a Celebrity Cruise, it is recommended to book early. Due to their popularity, interconnecting cabins tend to get reserved quickly. When making a booking, it is important to specify the requirement for interconnecting cabins to ensure availability.

Your guide to interconnecting cabins on Australia’s local ships

carnival cruise interconnecting rooms

If you have ever travelled with kids you will most certainly know the joys of sharing a hotel room or cruise cabin with your tribe. Restrictions like one bathroom or one television can lead to some very interesting disputes. But there are ways to minimise or even avoid this.

Your budget might not stretch to affording a family suite, however modern cruise lines are now well versed in ways they can accommodate the ever growing family market without charging the world. By far, the most common around these days has been the adaptation of standard cabins to be “interconnecting”, which effectively means that two adjoining cabins will have a door placed between them, enabling guests to transit between the two staterooms without first needing to venture out into the hallway.

The doors between the two cabins can be unlocked on request of your stateroom steward at the start of your voyage and whilst they can be closed as needed, they generally can’t be locked again without the steward and their key. Keep this in mind if you are sharing the two rooms with your adult or teenage children who may walk in to your room unannounced.

For all other purposes, the two cabins operate as separate cabins, so things like onboard accounts and other formalities will be able to be easily sorted out if the two cabins are housing different families or groups of friends. Alternatively, if the two cabins are being shared by one family with onboard accounts settled by the same credit card, most cruise lines will be happy to combine everything onto the one stateroom account, making it easier to track your entire family’s spend rather than having to track each individual account.

On some ships like  Carnival Spirit  &  Carnival  Legend,   there is an abundance of interconnecting cabins, however there are only a limited number of each stateroom type (Ocean View & Balcony) so booking them early is key to ensuring you get the room type you’re seeking and that the two rooms will indeed connect.

Newer ships such as Royal Caribbean’s  Ovation of the Seas  features around 25 different ways in which staterooms can interconnect, including quite a few options that see two quad staterooms able to be adjoined – a rarity in the cruise industry.

MSC Cruises – the cruise brand famous for its “Kids Cruise Free” offers is also ramping up the interconnecting choice aboard its newest ships  MSC Seaside  &  MSC  Meraviglia. Aimed at the larger families, the line is introducing new innovative designs that allow for up to three staterooms to interconnect, accommodating as many as ten guests. The new designs see combinations of interior, balcony and Ocean View cabins set in clusters and centred around a main entry way, with each stateroom retaining more privacy than traditional interconnecting cabins. The new designs will complement the existing “Super Family” interconnecting balcony staterooms already found across the MSC Cruises fleet.

Even local operator P&O Cruises features interconnecting stateroom options across its five ship fleet. It is in fact one of the few lines to also feature linkable interior staterooms. However the number of interior interconnected staterooms are extremely limited so booking early will ensure you get what you need.

In order to help you book a interconnecting cabin we have broken down the offerings of the local ships and where to look for them on your favourite ships:

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Spirit  features 86 interconnecting cabins in a variety of configurations that are spread out across the ship. This handy list of interconnecting options provides you with the specific cabin configurations and cabin numbers to ask for should you wish to book an interconnecting cabin on your upcoming  Carnival Spirit  cruise.

Sister ship  Carnival Legend  is slightly different to  Carnival Spirit  as she features a massive 106 interconnecting staterooms. Carnival has also produced a handy guide to  Carnival Legend ‘s interconnecting stateroom options.

Celebrity Cruises

As one of Australia’s largest ships,  Celebrity Solstice  is also loaded with interconnecting staterooms. Primarily in balcony categories,  Celebrity Solstice  features a unique space saving design which sees the front doors of connecting cabins angled at the entrance and joined at the front door by a special vestibule, rather than having a door open up in the middle of each room.

On  Pacific Jewel, Pacific Dawn  &  Pacific Pearl , keep an eye out on the higher end categories in each stateroom type as these are generally where interconnecting cabins are located on the three ships. On the two newest members of the P&O fleet,  Pacific Aria  &  Pacific  Eden,   the dedicated “OI” category of Ocean View rooms are the only interconnecting options.

  • Princess Cruises

Aboard  Sun Princess,   Dawn Princess  and  Sea Princess,  you will struggle to find any interconnecting rooms at all. Your best option is to consider booking two balcony rooms and open up the outer dividing wall between the two rooms.

On the line’s two other locally based vessels  Emerald Princess & Golden Princess,  guests may find some interconnected balcony staterooms, however these too are few and far between that your chances of securing any are very slim.

As one of the most family friendly cruise options in Australia, it’s good planning that sees the five ships Royal Caribbean sail from Australia offer a wide choice of interconnecting options.

On  Legend of the  Seas,   the line’s smaller ship sailing its final season from Brisbane this summer, the ship offers fewer interconnecting staterooms than her larger fleet mates, with these rooms in the ocean view and balcony categories. The ship however offers some of the widest choices for guests trying to book two quad berth interconnecting cabins for up to eight people staying together, so keep your eyes firmly planted on this ship if you are finding it hard to locate interconnecting quad cabins on other ships.

Twin sisters  Voyager of the Seas  and  Explorer of the Seas  also feature interconnecting stateroom selections across all categories including the addition of linkable Junior Suites, so if you and your family are wanting something a little more special, these two mammoths of the seas will most likely provide it.

However if you only want the biggest and best for your family, then the largest ship to ever call Australia home,  Ovation of the  Seas, has practically been built for families and offers more cabin choices than any other vessel in the Southern Hemisphere! With over 25 different interconnecting options on every single stateroom deck, including options to interconnect suites,  Ovation of the Seas  has something for everyone and at every price point. So if you particularly enjoy the suite life, yet don’t want to share the space with your entire family, interconnecting options can house up to ten guests across two cabins!

It’s hard to tell which onboard space best represents Carnival Splendor — they all seem to hint at the amazing time you’re going to have. Carnival Cruise and Royal Caribbean make popular smoking changes

C ruise ships put thousands of passengers and crew members in close proximity. In many ways, it's like living in a college dorm where rooms are small, people are packed in, and the inconsiderate actions of one person can impact a lot of people.

If you, for example, opt to be noisy in the halls late at night or have a loud argument (or loud happier activities) in your cabin after others have gone to sleep, you will wake people up. The same logic applies to how you treat public spaces.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line shares a warning about a gross problem

Leave a mess in a shared bathroom or be a slob at the buffet and your actions have an impact on other people. Some actions, however, are not an attempt to be rude, but still impact other passengers.

In a lot of these situations, the impacted party simply has the option to move. If you don't like the smell of whisky, or banana daiquiris and the person next to you at the bar is drinking either one, you only have to move a small bit away to not be impacted.

Smoking, however, cannot be avoided quite as easily. That's why Royal Caribbean and Carnival, at least on their namesake brands, place some pretty heavy limits on where people can smoke.

Where can Royal Caribbean and Carnival passengers smoke now?

Generally, both cruise lines offer a section of the pool deck where people can smoke. That can impact passengers who have to walk through that area, although they could cross the ship and go around, but often by the time they realize they have already been hit by smoke.

Sometimes Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) and Carnival also offer smoking on a lower deck, which is less of a concern because it's not necessary to pass through the area to get anywhere.

The two cruise lines also offer smoking sections in their casinos. In theory, you're supposed to be actively gambling to light up, but in practice, that's very hard to enforce.

Smoking in the casino causes problems because smoke does not stay with the smoker. Even with high-powered air filtration, smoke travels and some sensitive non-smokers get angry at being exposed to second-hand smoke.

Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise.

Both Royal Caribbean and Carnival have been experimenting with adding secondary smoke-free casinos on select ships. Royal Caribbean has done with all of its Oasis-class ships, turning the former "Jazz on 4" space into a small smoke-free casino and Carnival has done the same thing on 10 of its ships.

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald shared on Facebook that the cruise line's newest Excel Class ships, Carnival Jubilee, the Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Mardi Gras all offer secondary smoke-free casinos. Six other ships, Carnival Firenze, Carnival Venezia, Carnival Vista, Carnival Dream, Carnival Magic, and Carnival Breeze also have secondary smoke-free casinos.

Allowing smoking on cruise ships is a financial decision

Las Vegas Strip casinos are still largely smoker-friendly despite worker-led efforts to get that changed. The reality is that some gamblers like to smoke and would gamble less (or not at all) if they're not allowed to smoke while playing.

That's a lesson Royal Caribbean International learned the hard way according to its CEO Michael Bayley.

"The dilemma is that there are many people who do want to smoke in the casino. I know that's not a popular response, but it's it's the truth. I'm not judging anyone or anything, but there's a large group of people who do want to smoke in the casino," he said during Royal Caribbean's 2022 President's Cruise, the Royal Caribbean Blog reported.

Royal Caribbean's sister cruise line Celebrity Cruises does not allow smoking in its casinos, but that's not likely to happen on the namesake brand.

"I would say every couple of years, we do test this and we take one or two or three ships we ban smoking in the casino. And the result is less people go in the casino and that's the reality of it," he added.

Search suspended for man who fell overboard from Carnival cruise ship near Florida

Ronnie Peale Jr., 35, fell over his balcony railing on Monday, Carnival said.

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a Virginia man who fell from a cruise ship balcony earlier this week.

Ronnie Peale Jr., 35, went overboard from a Carnival Magic cruise ship traveling off the coast of Florida on Monday, the Coast Guard said.

After searching more than 5,171 square miles over the course of 60 hours, the Coast Guard said Wednesday night that it has suspended search efforts for Peale.

"The decision to suspend the active search efforts pending further development is never one we take lightly," Coast Guard District Seven search and rescue mission coordinator Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Hooper said in a statement . "We offer our most sincere condolences to Mr. Peale's family and friends."

Carnival Cruise Lines personnel contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at 6:36 p.m. on Monday to report that a passenger had fallen off the ship, which was 186 miles east of Jacksonville, the Coast Guard said.

Peale's companion reported him missing late Monday afternoon and "an initial review of closed circuit security footage confirms that he leaned over the railing of his stateroom balcony and dropped into the water at approximately 4:10 a.m. Monday," Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement to ABC News.

His partner, Jennilyn Blosser, told Richmond ABC affiliate WRIC that the footage showed him leaning over the railing and that it looks like he accidentally fell.

"It's not like he was like jumping, like you know, it wasn't like that at all," Blosser told the station.

Blosser said she woke up at 11:30 a.m. that morning and spent hours trying to find Peale. His mother, Linda Peale, told WRIC she knew something was wrong when her son didn't call that day to check in on his dogs.

Peale, from New Hope, Virginia, was on his first cruise and was celebrating Blosser's birthday with her family, Linda Peale said.

She described her son as "full of life" and someone who loved old cars, gardening and cooking.

"My son was a wonderful man," Linda Peale told WRIC.

Carnival passengers recount ‘nightmare’ cruise as storm floods ship

Videos showed the Carnival Sunshine cabins and hallways flooding and ceilings leaking

Matthew Branham and his fiancée, Madison Davis, were lying by a Carnival Sunshine pool on Friday aboard a cruise returning to Charleston, S.C., from the Bahamas when an announcement came over the loudspeaker. The captain was expecting rougher weather that evening, but there was nothing to worry about. So Branham and Davis didn’t worry.

As the day went on, “We noticed it started getting cooler in the afternoon — much, much cooler,” said Branham, 25, of Castlewood, Va. “And then it was like a switch was flipped, and it literally turned into a nightmare.”

En route back to Charleston Friday night into Saturday, the Carnival Sunshine navigated into a strong storm system that battered the southeast over the holiday weekend. Videos emerged on social media showing cabins and hallways flooding, shop floors littered with destroyed merchandise and leaking ceilings . Passenger Brad Morrell snapped a photo of an automated instrument map reporting a 69 knot, or 79 mph, wind.

#CarnivalSunshine : Due to return to Charleston, South Carolina this Saturday, May 27, 2023, has been delayed due to severe weather. The ship is currently off the South Carolina coast and holding position, unable to return to the port because of high winds & rough seas. #cruise 🙏🏼 pic.twitter.com/2B6HlAn2yD — ∼Marietta (@MariettaDaviz) May 28, 2023

Carnival said in a statement that the weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecast, but that its fleet operations center team, which relies on outside meteorology resources for itinerary planning, “coordinated to keep the ship in its safest location.”

“Attempting to sail out of the large front could have been dangerous,” the statement continued. “The ship proceeded to the port as soon as the weather began to clear.”

Strong Southeast storm slams Carolinas

Carnival said the captain made “several announcements about the weather and the delay it caused in returning to Charleston, asking guests to use extra precaution while walking around the ship.” Additionally, “some of the worst weather occurred in the overnight hours when announcements are not typically made, but guests and crew were safe.”

The ship’s medical staff did help a “small number” of guests and crew members who needed minor assistance following the storm. Despite the significant damage and a delay in schedule, Carnival Sunshine embarked on its next five-day Bahama sailing on Saturday.

From their sea-view room, Branham and Davis watched as waves surged over their window and braced themselves as the 892-foot-long ship lurched in the storm.

“Waves were hitting the boat so hard that it was like an earthquake experience, jarring you like a really rough roller coaster — even in the middle floor,” Branham said.

They were told to stay in their cabins. Meanwhile, Branham said, TVs were falling off walls, and glassware was sliding off shelves and shattering on the floor. “You could not stand up in your room,” he said. “You could be thrown from the bed.”

They packed up their belongings when their floor started to flood and took shelter in a main lobby area.

“All of the employees were sprinting downstairs with life vests,” Branham said. “There were little kids besides us screaming and crying and throwing fits.”

Throughout the storm, Branham wondered why there weren’t more announcements from Carnival staff. Besides the warning of rougher seas earlier Friday and one Saturday morning after they’d weathered the storm, Branham said they weren’t given any official updates on their situation. When he asked workers what was going on, they told him not to worry.

“But you see rooms flooded, and you can pick up a handful of sand and you’re kind of like, ‘What in the world? Why is nobody telling us anything?’” Branham said.

Jim Walker, a maritime lawyer and cruise industry legal expert, says his firm has been contacted by some Carnival Sunshine passengers who were injured during the storm, including a man who says he was struck by a door and broke his foot. Others have asked him about the potential for a class-action lawsuit.

While Walker said passengers should make their complaints known to Carnival, he doesn’t believe filing a lawsuit would be an efficient next step. Instead, impacted passengers can ask Carnival for a refund or a credit for another cruise, although there’s no guarantee the cruise line will grant such requests.

Pete Peterson, owner of Storybook Cruises , which is affiliated with Cruise Planners, said cruise ships keep a close eye on weather developments and will adjust their itinerary depending on the severity of the storm.

“Cruise lines monitor the weather all the time. They’re not going to put their passengers in harm’s way,” said Peterson, who has been a cruise adviser for more than 20 years and has sailed on nearly 60 cruises. “Obviously, some cruise lines are better at doing this than others.”

In 2016, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas returned to port after cruising into a “bomb cyclone,” which damaged the ship amid winds gusting to 100 mph. The ship sailed into the remnants of Hurricane Hermine seven months later, causing additional problems.

To ensure the safety and comfort of its passengers, a cruise ship can alter its course and circumvent the rough weather system. In stormy conditions, the crew can deploy the stabilizers, which will prevent the ship from rolling and bucking.

“You don’t experience the up and down,” Peterson said. “It’s not as rough a ride.”

Both approaches can add to a cruise line’s expenditures, Peterson said. Stabilizers slow the vessel, thereby consuming more fuel. Sailing around the storm can take longer than the original route and disrupt the company’s cruise schedule, leading to delays or cancellations. The cruise line may have to reimburse passengers or provide them with future credits because of the inconvenience.

“When they do something like that, it’s going to cost them money,” Peterson said.

Craig Setzer , a meteorologist and hurricane preparedness specialist, said that even with the hurricane-like conditions and flooding, “I would never be in doubt of the vessel’s integrity,” he said. “Cruise ships are structurally very, very sound and can survive a lot. They’re really rugged.”

Matthew Cappucci contributed to this report.

Living at sea: Travelers on a 9-month world cruise are going viral on social media. For some travelers, not even nine months was enough time on a ship; they sold cars, moved out of their homes and prepared to set sail for three years . That plan fell apart, but a 3.5-year version is waiting in the wings.

Passengers beware: It’s not all buffets and dance contests. Crime data reported by cruise lines show that the number of sex crimes has increased compared to previous years. And though man-overboard cases are rare, they are usually deadly .

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
