The 14 Must-Visit Wine Farms of the Breedekloof Valley

From the expected to the unanticipated, this wine valley is filled with gems.

The 14 Must-Visit Wine Farms of the Breedekloof Valley

Ostensibly a trek , the Breedekloof Valley is actually as far from Cape Town as Franschhoek is. As the light pulls you out of the Huguenot Tunnel, a Tolkien-esque scene awaits: with the towering rock faces of the Worcester Fault rising up on each side. This formation has crumbled imperceptibly through the ages giving the Breedekloof its mix of weathered sandstone, alluvial and granite soils. The Breede River is its ancient thoroughfare, depositing this mix across the valley floor. The mountains too create distinct climatic conditions; circling the valley they trap in the cool night air, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly, concentrating flavour and retaining acidity.

The majority of the estates are family-owned. Some have been farming here for up to eight generations. Many of the winemakers have grown up together. They have further banded together to form Breedekloof Makers, a collaborative that showcases boutique productions of chenin blanc, termed “the expected”, as well as wines made from unusual cultivars, or “the unexpected”.

This is real farming country, and with it warm hospitality is delivered through pastoral tasting rooms, farm-style eateries and unique accommodation offerings with a lean towards agrotourism. Here are 14 gems to explore.

Have you visited the Breedekloof Valley? Which are your favourite farms in the area? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Slanghoek Breede River Goudini + Rawsonville Louwshoek

Opstal Estate

Breedekloof: Opstal Estate

“I make single vineyard wines in a minimalistic way to best portray the vintage as the only variable year after year,” shares Attie Louw. A seventh generation winemaker, his family’s farm Opstal dates back to 1847. Once known for bulk production, Attie is largely credited with putting the region on the fine-wine map with the award-winning Carl Everson chenin blanc. He also founded the Breedekloof Makers in 2015. Travel to his lofty estate to drink in panoramic views of the valley and his accomplished wines. With those same stunning views Opstal Eat delivers classic country fare. The estate also offers self-catering cottages as well as a wedding and function venue. Wine Carl Everson Chenin Blanc 2020 Old vines (from a single vineyard planted in 1982) and wild fermentation reveal the site’s complexity; quince, peach and caramelised pineapple shot through with vervy acidity. Opening times Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm (tastings end at 4.30pm) Saturday, 11am – 4pm (tastings end at 3.30pm) Sunday, 12pm – 3pm (summer only) Restaurant: Daily, 9am – 5pm (kitchen closes at 3.30pm) Contact 023 344 3001, [email protected] Where to find it Slanghoek Road, Rawsonville

Slanghoek Cellar

Breedekloof: Slanghoek Cellar

In the amphitheatre of the Slanghoek Mountains, find Slanghoek Cellar, an historic co-op dating back to the mid-century that is now also producing fine wines. A team of winemakers head up operations, with assistant Elaine Conradie in particular showing an affinity for chenin blanc. The Legends Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc has garnered critical acclaim throughout its vintages, as well as numerous awards, including a SA Top 10 Chenin Blanc Award. Gaze out at the mountains while tasting the cellar’s wares (there is a chocolate-truffle pairing too), take a cellar tour, and even blend your own wine. Go breathe that mountain air with its new MTB route through the vineyards and mountain streams. Wine Legends Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2019 The richness of the sun is here, delivering tropical pineapple tones laced with refreshing lime. Opening times Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm Saturday + public holidays, 10am – 2pm Contact 023 344 3026, [email protected] Where to find it 10 Slanghoek Road, Rawsonville

Jason’s Hill Private Cellar

Breedekloof: Jason Hill Private Cellar

The Du Toit family have been farming the same estate for generations, dating all the way back to 1844. Currently at the helm is winemaker Ivy du Toit. And what a winemaker! She was named Young Winemaker of the Year by Diner’s Club in 2003, and in 2004 was the first winner of Landbouweekblad’s Women Winemaker of the Year award. “I want my wines to bring joy. I love making wines that speak of tradition and heritage,” she comments. Meet the dynamic Ivy by booking a private tasting at the farm. Then go see the magic of the mountains on the farm’s demarcated hiking trail that takes you past two waterfalls (in the winter months). Wine Arrois Cap Classique 2018 The first 100% chenin cap classique to come out of the Breedekloof. Its 42 months on lees imbues the delectable bubbly with layers of richness, ribboned through with green apple and white peach. Opening times Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm Saturday, 10am – 3pm Contact 023 344 3256, [email protected] Where to find it Slanghoek Road, Rawsonville

Breëland Estate

Breedekloof: Breëland Estate

Yet another historic family farm dating back to the early 1840s, owned in perpetuity by the Marais family. Winemaker Wickus Erasmus likes to take his time in the cellar, believing cold macerations and slow ferments best reveal this special terroir. Opening this year will be a newly built tasting room, where you can sip on the wines while overlooking the wide dam with its backdrop of mountains and vineyards. Continue soaking in the peace with a stay over at Buchukloof, which offers a self-catering cottage, game drives as well as mountain bike, running and hiking trails. Wine Breëland Sauvignon Blanc 2022 Appetisingly racy with steely flavours of classic nettle and fig. Contact 023 344 3129; [email protected] Where to find it Slanghoek Road, Rawsonville

Breede River

Mountain ridge wines.

Breedekloof: Mountain Ridge Wines

“You need to go out and taste in the vineyard. It starts there,” emphasises winemaker Carel Hugo on his approach to winemaking. Mountain Ridge produces both larger volume wines as well as more boutique lines from a network of 20 growers. The farm itself dates back to the early 1700s, while the winery was founded in 1949. It was originally called Romansrivier Winery, which is now the name of its critically acclaimed chenin blanc. There’s a tasting room to sample the range of wines (chenin blanc, pinotage rosé, shiraz, merlot and cabernet sauvignon), as well as a wedding and events venue for those planning something bigger. Wine Mountain Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 Incredible value for classic cab styling, loaded with cassis and earthy nuance. Bergsig Wine Estate

Breedekloof: Bergsig Wine Estate

Bergsig has been owned by the Lategan family since 1843, and sixth-generation De Wet Lategan works closely with winemaker Chris du Toit. Chris has been making the wines for over two decades now and in that time has secured the winery many awards. Dedicated to his craft he says: “The wine must be in balance.” Do your own version of balance and take it slow here. Taste through the range while enjoying the mountain view, and lunch at Bergsig Bistro. Why not extend the visit with a stay at Die Kelderhuis? The newly renovated three-bedroom farm cottage overlooks the farm’s vineyards and the Bainskloof mountains. Pack binoculars for birdwatching and your mountain-bike so you can tackle the Bergsig Trail. Wine Tant Anna Chardonnay Reserve 2021 A harmonious marriage of citrus and creamy oak with lovely length and inherent freshness. The access to a wealth of fruit has seen more premium, boutique bottlings under the Amyah and Turoc Unify labels. A contingent of winemakers head different divisions, one of which is rising star Annamarie van Niekerk who can often be found in the winery’s modern tasting room. Here, taste the wines, enjoy delicious food-and-wine pairings and tuck into the much-talked-about cheese platters. Wine Turoc Unify 2019 A vibrant Cape blend of pinotage, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz showing off juicy berry fruit cradled in fine, dry tannins. Olifantsberg Wines

Breedekloof: Olifantsberg Wines

“The vineyard reacts to how you care for it. If you treat it badly you’re going to see it; treat it well, it will outlive you,” enthuses Olifantsberg’s winemaker Elizma Visser. Located on the slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain, she says the rocky terroir defines the uniqueness of the wines. Her focus and dedication to site have been noticed – she was named Young Winemaker of the Year in 2021 by Tim Atkin MW for her stellar line-up. Tastings by appointment only. Wine Olifantsberg Grenache Blanc 2021 Delicate and mineral with lashings of lifted stone fruit; this is a love letter to site. Goudini + Rawsonville

Badsberg wine cellar.

Breedekloof: Badsberg Wine Cellar

Find this historic co-op (established in 1951) at the foot of the Badsberg Mountains. This is the domain of award-winning winemakers Henri Swieger, Jaco Booysen and Cobus Kruger. Henri produces an array of premium white wines among the other more bulk ranges, showing a particular deftness with both chenin blanc as well as sweet wines. He’s been at Badsberg for over two decades, and has won the coveted General Smuts Trophy four times, among many other accolades. The tasting room, at the heart of the farm, offers wine tastings and cheese platters which can be enjoyed on the deck overlooking the valley. Wine Badsberg Noble Late Harvest 2017 Led by chenin with just a touch of hanepoot, this is achingly delicious, with marmalade, nuts and toffee moreishness. Belle Rebelle Winery

Winemaker with her own-name label, Mariëtte Stofberg-Coetzee sources grapes from her ancestral family farm, Stofberg Family Vineyards. Her Belle Rebelle boutique wine brand focuses on expressing the different pockets of soils found there. Alongside still wines, Mariëtte’s particular speciality is sparkling wine, and she’s won a few awards to prove it. She is also currently experimenting with the charmat method and has made the Cape’s answer to Prosecco, ‘CapeSecco’. Adjacent to the tasting room you’ll find a gin distillery, and the Ou Stokery restaurant serving up hearty country fare. Wine A Bird In The Hand Semillon 2021 Like apricots, peach and quince wrapped in honeyed wax paper; absolutely gorgeous texture and fruitfulness. Du Toitskloof Wines

Breedekloof: Du Toitskloof Wines

“Wine is like magic. You need to create something that will excite your audience and leave them wanting more,” says winemaker Willie Stofberg. Willie has been at the helm here for many years, and part of the job is manning Quest, the premium label focusing on traditional French blends. Get to know the wines (and the people of the Breedekloof) at Du Toitskloof’s brand-new tasting venue. A hub of activity, it includes art exhibitions, bottomless mimosas on weekends as well as pop-up wine bars that feature the valley’s wines. In-between tastings grab a bite to eat at Ou Meul Bakery. Like many of the other Breedekloof estates, Du Toitskloof has also taken advantage of its spectacular surroundings with scenic trails for running and mountain-biking. Wine Quest Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2022 Top notes of jasmine and citrus with old vine concentration in spades. Merwida Wines

Breedekloof: Merwida Wines

With over 800 hectares of vines, Merwida is one of the largest privately owned vineyards in South Africa. The Van der Merwe family (who have nurtured this land for seven generations) has also conserved 600 hectares of wetlands called Papenkuils. Huis Te Merwede, one of the original Merwida homesteads, would not be out of place in Gone with the Wind , so spectacularly palatial it is. Here guests can taste wines, retire to Cecile’s Tea Room for an array of eats, or even find a table outside in the estate’s lush gardens. Wine Papenkuils Waterblommetjie Pinot Grigio 2022 Pretty honeysuckle and orange blossom lead to a light, zippy body redolent of fresh pears. Opening times Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm Saturday 10am – 3pm Cecile’s Tea Room: Tuesday – Friday, 9am – 5pm Saturday, 10am – 3pm Contact 023 349 1144, 066 258 1691 (WhatsApp), [email protected] Where to find it Old Villiersdorp Road, Rawsonville

Breedekloof: Daschbosch

“I make elegant, artisanal wines from salvaged old vines and classic heritage wines from the beautiful fruit of our Daschbosch vineyards,” sums up winemaker WS Visagie. Daschbosch is a boutique label under Breedekloof winery uniWines, where the focus is on terroir-specific wines. The farm itself was granted in 1754, and the contemporary ethos is a respect for tradition by making wines from protected old vines within the vineyard portfolio. The winery hosts regular pop-up tasting events, so follow its social media for more information. Wine Avon Clairette Blanche 2021 From vines planted in 1977, this wine manages to be featherweight yet utterly complex with beautiful stone fruit and spice. Kirabo Kompanjie

Breedekloof: Kirabo Kompanjie

Kirabo Kompanjie is a boutique label owned by the Le Roux family, who have farmed this land for seven generations. They have been known to specialise in petit verdot and, with the appointment of seventh generation Ronald Le Roux, the range is expanding. The wines can be sampled at the tasting room decorated with family memorabilia and plants from the farm’s expansive gardens. There are a host of unusual pairings to try, such as the red-wine-infused vanilla cupcakes, paired with their ‘Cupcake’ wine; or shiraz ice-cream washed down with a glass of shiraz itself. Also onsite is sibling company Broers Brew craft brewery, as well as a very popular wedding venue. Wine Kirabo Petit Verdot 2019 The perfume of violets leads to an inky, cherry-forward palate. Valley of legends

When venturing into the Breedekloof, expect legends around every corner. We’re not just talking about the characters and characterful wine you’ll encounter as you taste from estate to estate… This ancient place is also a cradle of numerous African tales. The most famous is about Slanghoek (aka snake corner). It was named for an old San legend of a serpent with an emerald on its head, which held dominion over the river banks… See if you can spot it.

Breedekloof’s Valley of Plenty: Where every vine tells a story

by Anton Pretorius | Jan 30, 2019 | Blog , Lifestyle , News

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Breedekloof Valley is home to only large-scale wine producing cooperatives. Anton Pretorius recently discovered that this picturesque wine hamlet, including the charming Slanghoek Valley, offers a lot more than meets the eye.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Vineyards planted on the foot of the Slanghoek mountains gives the Breedekloof its own unique terroir.

“Most Capetonians think the province’s border ends at the Huguenot tunnel,” is a quip that the friendly folk of the Breedekloof Valley are fond of using. “After that, it’s pretty much Johannesburg,” says a jolly patron at a local watering hole in Rawsonville, followed by a belly slap and a thunderous laugh.

Albeit funny, the statement was, of course, a gross generalisation. But the point this local was trying to make is that many are still blissfully unaware of the beauty that awaits them beyond the berg . The proverbial ‘light’ at the end of the tunnel if you will …

Hence, Breedekloof’s status as a wine tourism destination is still considered every much ‘up-and-coming’ and ‘emerging’ and the region flies quietly below the wine radar compared to the more established wine regions of South Africa. Although there’s a lack of prominence, this, I suspect, is all part of the Valley’s charm.

But don’t be mistaken thinking that this so-called shortage in stature makes Breedekloof inferior in any way. On the contrary, it produces the same, if not better, quality wine, grapes and vineyards as any other wine valley in the Western Cape.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

The author’s wife Niecole was mesmerised by the beauty of Breedekloof during a hike near Kirabo Private Cellar.

Having said that, the Breedekloof’s status as a wine tourism destination is changing as we speak. Pieter Carstens, cellar master at Slanghoek Cellar, says he’s seen a steady increase in visitor numbers to the valley. There’s been somewhat of a movement among both local and international wine enthusiasts to make wine discoveries along South Africa’s less trodden wine routes – especially places which offer a more authentic interaction.

The Breedekloof is only a short 30-minute drive from Paarl, and roughly an hour from Cape Town. Once you emerge through the Du Toitskloof Mountains and Huguenot tunnel, the world opens up to a spectacular kaleidoscope of towering mountains, pristine rivers and some of the most inviting wines and wine estates you’ll ever come across.

Here you’ll find a cluster of smaller, family-owned farms that’s owned and operated at least by the third of fourth generation, each offering a unique and memorable experience for the discerning traveller. Winemakers here have put down roots as deep as the vines they grow.

Nestled snugly in between the towns of Worcester and Paarl, the Breedekloof is a charming, hill-laden valley made up of smaller towns like Rawsonville, Slanghoek, Goudini and Breërivier. It is walled by the Slanghoek and Du Toitskloof Mountains in the west and south-west, and the foothills of the Hex River Mountains in the north-east.

Although home to some of the oldest estates in the Cape, the Breedekloof Valley tends to keep a low profile. Fancy festivals just don’t fit this laid-back corner of the Cape (except for the now-popular annual Soetes en Sop ), which makes it all the more worth a visit, come summer or winter.

The Chenin Camaraderie

If you’re a lover of South Africa’s foundation stone, namely Chenin Blanc, then you’ll have another good reason to visit this valley. Breedekloof’s winemaking ‘wizards’ are especially fond of brewing Chenin Blanc in their cauldrons, producing some of the best and interesting styles of this cultivar that’ll have you smacking your lips for more.

The region is so immensely proud of its Chenin Blanc that a handful of the region’s winemakers often band together to blind taste and promote the region’s signature variety. They’re called the Breedekloof Makers , a congregation of the valley’s winemakers committed to emphasising the quality of wines being made in the region, as well as accentuating the diverse terroir pockets.

The camaraderie and warmth between winemakers (and their ability to put competition, rivalry and politics aside) was an interesting sight to behold. Nowhere else is this kind of solidarity among winemakers evident, especially not in the more established wine regions (which I’ll refrain from mentioning) where the winemaking community is renowned for being ruthlessly competitive, cut-throat and sometimes a bit snooty.

The Breedekloof Tour

Our weekend stay in the valley was courtesy of Remhoogte Farm’s Shiraz cottage – a quaint little digs overlooking the farm’s vast vineyards and the majestic Slanghoek mountains. It’s equipped with everything you’ll ever need, including a rustic, yet very pleasant outdoor shower area, a massive veranda for sundowners and spectacular views and an ample braai area.

We kicked off tour with a hearty lunch at Bosjes Valley Farm . Although rich in history, the estate is a relatively new concept to the region and rebuilt with the aim of attracting a more upmarket visitor. The much-lauded chapel at Bosjes – an architectural masterpiece – tends to steal the show, but this estate has much to offer, including some tasty bistro dining and stylish accommodation.

Celebrated chef Peter Goffe-Wood does some consulting work over at the Bosjes Kombuis. I feasted on a bacon, pesto, mozzarella and rocket beef burger that was out of this world, while my wife enjoyed Bosjes’ famous beef short-rib. The food went down well with Bosjes’ white house blend and Pinotage red.

At the northern end of the valley, Bergsig Estate has been in the Lategan family for more than 170 years and today has more land under conservation than cultivation. Self-guided walking trails meander through the vineyards to a permanent bird hide, so bring your binoculars and tick off the 150-odd bird species recorded on the farm. And the wine? You’ll find a wonderful range to suit all palates and pockets.

Breedekloof winemakers: Chris du Toit (Bergsig), Justin Corrans (Mountain Ridge) and Heinrich Lategan (Lateganskop)

We were treated to a very special tasting alongside winemakers Chris du Toit (Bergsig), Heinrich Lategan ( Lateganskop Wine Cellar ) and Justin Corrans ( Mountain Ridge Wines ). We were particularly fond of Lateganskop’s Livias’ Laughter MCC, Mountain Ridge’s De Liefde Chenin Blanc and Bergsig’s Icarus 2012 red. Lateganskop’s The Zahir 2017, Bergsig’s Touriga Nacional (2015) and Mountain Ridge’s Jailbreak Merlot also scored points in the red wine category.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

From there, we meandered into the gorgeous Slanghoek Valley to Opstal Wine Estate , another family-owned estate with deep roots in the region. Winemaker Attie Louw’s Carl Everson Chenin Blanc is the standout wine here: made from old vines, fermented with wild yeasts and matured in old oak barrels, it’s a true taste of Slanghoek terroir.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Elizma Visser (Olifantsberg Wines), Attie Louw (Opstal Wine Estate) and Lieza van der Merwe (Merwida Wine Estate).

Attie, a prominent figure in the Breedekloof region, not only possesses a warm, welcoming nature, but has a certain way with words. Describing some of his Chenin Blanc wines as ‘ vet en sexy ’ was a vivid and unforgettable interpretation of his wine (and surprising accurate …).

Without sounding too sexist or chauvinistic, I did notice a strong presence of female winemakers in the Breedekloof Valley (which I obviously laud!). It goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway) that the women here can definitely hold their own in the winemaking game.

We met with wonder women winemakers Lieza van der Merwe ( Merwida Wine Estate ) and Elizma Visser ( Olifantsberg Wines ).   Lieza produces some lovely Sauvignon Blanc varieties, including Pinot Grigio and Barbera and especially tasty Chenin Blanc, blending bright fruits with a minerality typical of this family-owned estate’s white wines.

Olifantsberg’s Lark Chenin Blanc 2017, Blanc 2016 (blend) and Silhouette 2015 really captured the estate’s unique location, diverse soils and natural expression of its vineyards.

We concluded our evening with a very special tasting when esteemed wine estates Slanghoek and Badsberg sent their most trusted winemakers to our cottage to rate their wines and enjoy a sunset so beautiful you would think that God was using Photoshop.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Slanghoek Cellar ’s Nico Grundling and Badsberg Wine Cellar ’s Henri Swiegers are old mates from competing wineries. But in Breedekloof Valley, there’s hardly any rivalry among winemakers, instead there’s a certain sense of camaraderie and support that makes this region unique to any other wine region in the Western Cape.

Apart from their brilliant signature red and white varieties, Nico and Henri also treated us to another local pleasure, fortified sweet wine made from Hanepoot grapes. Badsberg’s Jerepigo 2017 and Slangoek’s Cape Ruby was the standouts here.

With its old world charm and magnificent views on the mountains and vineyards, Jason’s Hill is the ideal spot to spend an afternoon.

One of the highlights of our tour was meeting with Jason’s Hill ’s cheerful Ivy du Toit – a sixth generation descendant of JC Rousseau, the pioneer who first settled the Slanghoek Valley two centuries ago.

Ivy is a self-made and hard-working winemaker who cut her teeth in France and came back to claim the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year in 2003 and Women Winemaker of the Year 2004. Ivy, who helped put Breedekloof on South Africa’s wine map, says the appeal of the Slanghoek Valley as a wine tourism destination lies in the beauty of the surrounds, but also the vineyards that are planted so close to the mountains.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Jason’s Hill produces excellent Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, while its Jason’s Creek Classic Red is a great everyday quaffer: a delicious blend of Pinotage, Shiraz, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. The estate restaurant also offers casual country cooking and wonderful valley views. Hours slipped by as we listened intently to Ivy’s stories of growing up in the Breedekloof. The serenity of our surrounds was hypnotic, and while sipping on (our clear favourites) Jason Hill’s Beatrix Reserve and Izak Bordeaux Reserve, we couldn’t image being anywhere else in the world.

Johan Linde (Botha Cellars) and Mariëtte Stofberg-Coetzee (Stofberg Family Vineyards).

Mariëtte Stofberg-Coetzee is another innovative female winemaker in the region you simply have to meet. Stofberg Family Vineyard , a family-run boutique winery, hosted us to a generous supper including a wine and gin tasting at its Ou Stokery restaurant . Mariëtte infuses her gin with buchu, honeybush and confetti bush and serves it with their signature blue, pink or white Mosquito tonic water.

But if wine is your tipple of choice, you simply have to try Mariëtte’s unique Mariëtte Pinot Blanc 2017, Chenin blanc 2017 and Shiraz 2016 – South Africa’s first single bottling of this cultivar. Her Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and MCC wine ranges are also top-class and well worth a taste or ten! The affable Johan Linde from Botha Kelders joined our party and gave us a thorough tasting of Botha Kelder’s range of well-crafted wine, including it’s accessible red and white varieties, the more serious reserve wines and its delectable full sweet fortified wines.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

The private cellar of Kirabo (African word meaning ‘a gift from God’) was another interesting stop on our route. This boutique red wine cellar offers cupcake-and-wine pairing, vineyard tours and some delicious craft beer brewed and served on tap at the premises.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Du Toitskloof Wines , situated right at the start of the Breedekloof wine route is a young, forward-thinking and innovative winery that has quickly established its name as a household wine brand. Here, you can begin your adventure with a coffee and hearty breakfast at Ou Meul Bakery (situated on the premises) and explore Du Toitskloof’s vast range of various wines and MCCs. We were especially fond of the Pinotage Rosé (a real strawberry rush) and the Land’s End Cape South Coast Syrah 2017.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Du Toitskloof Wines’ amazing range of wines, MCCs and muscadel – all worth a try!

If you think that the Breedekloof is all about wine, think again! Our Sunday was spent on the back of a Land Cruiser gameviewer (under the auspice of the spirited game and grape farmer Jacobus Griessel) spotting golden Wildebeest, Eland, Zebra and Buffalo at Wysersdrift Wine and Wildlife Estate . Here you can get up close and personal with a large variety of Southern Africa’s game species that roam in between fruitful vineyards, mountainous hills and quaint valleys. Our weekend concluded with a breakfast braai next to the river with the occasional zebra drifting towards the smell of eggs cooking on an open fire. Tough life, right?

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

At Wysersdrift, there’s a specific breeding project that attempts to bring back the quagga from extinction and reintroduce it into its natural habitat.

All good things come to an end …

The warm welcomes and meaningful conversations we had with every single winemaker was testament to the region’s hearty hospitality they extend to visitors, just another great reason to make your way to Breedekloof Valley where even city slickers like us, were treated with kindness, friendliness and a burning desire to share all the pleasantries of the region.

Versatility is one of the key strengths of the wines of the Breedekloof and Slanghoek Valleys. But apart from the wine, the unique ‘terroir’ of the Breedekloof also extends to the generous servings (both wine and food), genuine warm hospitality, beautiful surrounds and an experience so authentic, you’ll never want to leave this place.

A massive thanks to Marie-Louise from Remhoogte Farm, Pieter Carstens (Slanghoek) and Jeanri-Tine van Zyl from Feed That Bird PR , as well as all the winemakers we met on this unforgettable journey. For more information, call Breedekloof Tourism on  +27(0) 23 349 1791 or email [email protected]

Du Toitskloof Wines

Iconic south african wine making at its very best, du toitskloof winery: embedded in beautiful landscape.

The iconic Du Toitskloof Winery is situated along a beautiful mountain pass close to the town of Rawsonville in the Breedekloof Valley in South Africa. The wines are a well-established and well-recognised brand in South Africa, which have also gained international attention.

Du Toitskloof and Fairtrade

Six wine farmers in the area first established the estate in 1962 and from there it grew into the multi million Rand Company that it is today. The wines were first produced for wholesales but eh focus later changed to the bottled wine market. The Du Toitskloof winery has displayed great innovation in its cellar and in the vineyards by planting noble cultivars that are perfectly suited to the climate of the region. The Du Toitskloos wines are sold under five different brands: Du Toitskloof, Quest, Land’s End, Zonin Prosecco and Tunnel. The most popular of these are the Du Toitskloof Sauvignon Blanc, the Quest Heroes Journey 2016, the Land’s End Syrah, the Zonin Prosecco Superiore DOCG and the Tunnel Fragrant Rose.

In 2005, Du Toitskloof became one of the first Fairtrade accredited wine producers in South Africa

Focus on sustainability

Fairtrade is an internationally recognised organisation that ensures the well-being of rural and previously disadvantaged communities throughout the world, focussing on sustainable social, economic and environmental development. The Fairtrade initiate at Du Toitskloof is built around the winery where farmworkers are considered stakeholders in the wine making process and have the access to training and skills development. To date more than 2500 people have directly benefited from these initiatives which now include a children’s day care centre a mobile clinic, bursaries for schooling and adult literacy projects.

Breathtaking scenery

The breedekloof wine route.

T T he Breedekloof w ine r oute , just 90km outside of Cape Town, has been in existence since 2002, and the Breedekloof district received Wine of Origin status in 2006.

Comprising 22 wineries, of which a third are large-scale cooperatives, the Breedekloof winelands are one of the Cape’s largest wine-producing areas.

The Breedekloof district is exceptionally diverse with distinct variations in soil, climate, and topography that allow the region to produce a wide variety of wines. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

Wine production takes place alongside the Breede River, on river terraces along the valley floor, and the upper and lower mountain slopes, where alluvial soils vary from loam to river gravel deposits.

Despite the proximity of many vineyards to the Breede River, winemakers here are increasingly moving towards sustainable, non-irrigated cultivation, and producing smaller, terroir-focused batches of wine, to the delight of oenophiles looking for superb vintages to cellar for future enjoyment.

The Breedekloof winelands produce New World wines known for their quality and easy drinking appeal, with c hardonnay and p inotage among the best performing.

Red cultivars typical of the Breede River wine route are cabernet sauvignon, merlot. White varieties include sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc and small blocks of semillon and viognier.

Boland hospitality is legendary, and it’s no coincidence that the term  soetes (sweet) applies equally to the area's acclaimed natural sweet and fortified wines, and the wine route members who are genuinely delighted to welcome you.

Good hosts and good stewards of their scenic valley, a growing number of eco-conscious Breedekloof wineries are working with organisations , like the Biodiversity Wine Initiative , Cape Nature Conservation , and the Cape Leopard Trust , to safeguard the Breede River Valley’s biodiversity and beauty.

Enjoy the fruits of the Breedekloof w ine r oute's labour in- and ex-cellar, when you go trout fishing, birding, canoeing, or white-water rafting in the area.

You can also explore the Breede River’s back roads by mountain bike, on foot, or on horseback. Or simply relax with a bottle or two of one of the Breedekloof wine s . There's a great view just about anywhere you go here!

📍SLANGHOEK

Opstal estate.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Slanghoek Cellar

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Breëland Estate

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

📍BREEDE RIVER

Mountain ridge wines.

Opening times Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm Saturday, 10am – 2pm Contact 023 004 1492, [email protected] Where to find it De Liefde Road, Wolseley

Bergsig Wine Estate

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Opening times Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm Saturday + public holidays, 9am – 4pm Bistro: Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm Saturday, 9am – 4pm Contact 023 355 1603, [email protected] Where to find it R43, near junction with R301, Breerivier

Botha Kelder

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Botha Kelder was established in 1949 and now comprises 35 farms, producing almost 30-million litres of wine every year. Opening times Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm Saturday, 10am – 3pm Contact 023 355-1740, [email protected] Where to find it R43, near Worcester

Olifantsberg Wines

Opening times Monday – Friday, 8am – 4pm (booking essential) Contact 071 301 9440, [email protected] Where to find it Apiesklip Rd, off R43, near Worcester

📍GOUDINI + RAWSONVILLE

Badsberg wine cellar.

breedekloof wine & tourism rawsonville photos

Find this historic co-op (established in 1951) at the foot of the Badsberg Mountains. This is the domain of award-winning winemakers Henri Swieger, Jaco Booysen and Cobus Kruger. Henri produces an array of premium white wines among the other more bulk ranges, showing a particular deftness with both chenin blanc as well as sweet wines. The tasting room, at the heart of the farm, offers wine tastings and cheese platters which can be enjoyed on the deck overlooking the valley.

Badsberg Cellar

Badsberg Wine Cellar lies in the picturesque Breedekloof, at the foot of the well known Badsberg Mountain, from which the cellar derives its name. The cellar is situated a mere 800m from the Goudini Spa Holiday Resort, 20 km from Worcester and plus minus 80 km from Cape Town. Badsberg’s emblem boasts the rare and protected Haemanthus Coccineus or March Flower, which is found in the area and has pride of place on the Badsberg wine labels. Traditionally, when this flower blooms in March, hanepoot grapes are harvested. Badsberg Wine cellar is situated in the Badsberg Conservancy, an area renowned for the conservation of the indigenous fauna and flora. Since its establishment in 1951, wine makers, members of the cellar and viticulturists at Badsberg have been committed to the production of quality wines year after year. This dedication, together with modern day cellar equipment, enables Badsberg’s cellar-master and his team to produce a range of quality wines that are regularly awarded many prestigious national and international awards. Visitors are invited to taste these award winning white, red and sparkling wines, port, muscadel and heavenly hanepoot in our modern wine tasting centre.

Bergsig Estate

Appropriately named Bergsig, meaning “Mountain View “, the estate is nestled on the slopes where the towering Drakenstein and Hex River Mountains meet. This family farm was established in 1843, and is one of only a few wine estates in the Breedekloof district. Owned and run by the Lategan family, De Wet Lategan is the sixth generation winemaker. Situated at the northern entrance of the Bainskloof pass, this very old and traditional wine estate is proud not only of the superior wines that are born and matured here, but also the symbiotic relationship the family has with the fauna and flora. Besides breathtaking scenery, the farms position also provides unique climatic conditions, being situated where the Breedekloof valley narrows. This funnel effect creates cooling winds in summer and sufficient rainfall, coupled with access to mountain hillsides for vineyard planting, all ingredients are in place for producing top quality wines. And the recipe is a success, as reflected by the impressive tally of over 100 awards, trophies and medals received at both local and international wine shows. You are invited to visit Bergsig Estate, and try our award winning wines. You can even enjoy lunch at our Bistro while overlooking the […]

Huis Te Merwede (The Home of Merwida Wines)

Huis Te Merwede, the new home of Merwida Wines The Van Der Merwe family, 7th generation family vintners, have been growing grapes and making wine in the Breedekloof wine region since 1844. Their history steeps deep into these ancient floodplains and they have become pioneers in their field. The generational love shared for grape growing by cousins Schalk and Pierre have led to Merwida Winery becoming a hugely successful company. The opening of Huis Te Merwede is a tribute to this success. Huis Te Merwede is one of the two original Merwida homesteads, built in the early 1970’s. The newly renovated homestead houses a stylishly atmospheric wine-tasting area where Merwida’s range of terroir-driven wines can be experienced, a tea-room and a conference facility. The stylish interiors spill-out onto the homestead’s lush verdant gardens, allowing visitors to also enjoy the fresh open-air space. The focus is on sustainable farming and winemaking practices resulting in limited intervention in both the vineyard and cellar. Our Estate and its people are well known for their hospitality and friendliness. Passing generatations of knowledge of grape growing on to the next and working together as a team we have perfected our family wine recipe at Le Belle Rebelle. The results speak for itself, winning numerous international and local wine awards.

The Holsloot River flows through the picturesque Stettynskloof valley and it is cupped by mountains which provide a breathtaking backdrop to one of the most highly regarded dry fly venues in the country. Its clarity and free rising rainbow trout create memories that endure long after you have left for home. The dam at the head of the valley, that supplies the nearby town of Worcester with its water, creates a tailwater fishery, ensuring a constant supply of cool water in the Cape’s hot, dry summers when other rivers in the area become too warm for trout fishing. Dwarsberg, situated in the heart of the region’s wine country, offers tranquility in spectacular suroundings. The Holsloot River rewards delicacy in approach, tackle and tactics – the most poetic form of fly fishing.

Ou Stokery Restaurant

The Ou Stokery Restaurant was the final leg of our lifelong dream for the farm and came to live in July 2017. The vision of the restaurant was to provide a better working environment for our farm workers. Executive Chef Ashley Conquest’s passion for people and good food made him a perfect fit to lead this amazing team. At the restaurant, we aim to serve as fresh and local food as possible. The variety on the blackboard is a showcase of Ashley’s selection of meats that are smoked weekly on site and paired with sides to perfection. Our floor manager is Authur Kadema, originally from Zimbabwe, also known at Pigalle restaurant as King Arthur. He impressed both Deon & Mariëtte so much when he served them there back in 2016 that they approached him to join the team and look after the service and training of the staff – today he is part of the “family” and lives on the farm. All liquor products served in the restaurant is made in the “Ou Stokery” building and no products, wine, beer etc. is allowed to be brought in.

Monk’s Gin

In a secluded Breede Valley sanctum, a lone monk hunches over his bench, cackling quietly to himself. Devotion to the lost art of alchemy can drive a man mad, but Brother Nicholas remains stoic in his pursuit of a fresh miracle. Oh, the things he’s seen, concocting and conjuring and staring into the void, all in the name of unearthing the supernatural, the curious and the sublime… MONKS gins are handcrafted and double-distilled in small batches using a hybrid artisanal still called ‘Jennifer’, named after Nic’s mother and of Nic’s own design. Expect intensely flavour-forward botanicals, nine of them hand-picked and many endemic to the area. Combine with crystal-clear mountain waters and the result is a heavenly one. Featuring ripples of citrus, berries and Cape buchu, our gins are designed for immaculate consumption.

Kraalskloof Accommodation

While building a new irrigation dam for his farm, high up on the slopes of his mountain, the farm owner saw the possibility of creating a weekend getaway campsite. The campsite spot has unprecedented views all the way to Worcester, he felt that this spot was the perfect spot to set up a campsite. Soon after completion, the indigenous fauna and flora were reintroduced to the area and a vast stretch on the embankment was carpeted in a lawn to create a sense of space. The owner of the land, refurbished an unused shipping container turning the space into 2 showers and 2 lavatories.  There is also a very comfortable kitchen/scullery. There is a space set up adjacent to the container and covered by a large roof with enough room to pitch a tent undercover too—perfect protection against the elements. It is a lovely campsite located on a working farm, but perfectly situated on the upper levels of the mountain side at the edge of a dam, to take in the views of the valley. The campsite is private and exclusively booked per party of guests.

De Groote Vlakte Boutique Winery

AB first tasted Durif wine in 2012 and fell in love with the grape. With the encouragement of the Badsberg cellar master he planted a 100 vines in 2013 and was further encouraged to make his own wine from the grapes as an extension of the experiment. In 2014 AB harvested 110kg of grapes and produced 60 litres of wine from it. The rest, as they say, is history.

Breëland Estate

Snuggled between the majestic Slanghoek Mountains, this picturesque Wine Estate has long been home to the iconic Marais Family Wines. The authenticity of our wine farm is the beautiful heritage and history that this rich soil carries.  It dates back to the 1820’s which marks this farm as one of the oldest farms in the Slanghoek Valley.  The first owner Johannes Coenraad Rossouw was an extraordinary farmer and he carried his pathway of success through to the next generations. Today Lizelle Marais with her 3 children stands tall as the 8th generation farm owners, pioneering this awe-inspiring and spectacular Breëland Wine Estate into a firmly established entity. Lizelle has a passion and a vision that will ignite many generations to come.  Breëland Estate is a highly focused, family driven winery, where a select range of handcrafted wines are produced.  Here we nurture each cultivar to the utmost care to produce only the best of the best. Breëland stands proudly at the forefront of estate – based, family-owned wineries in this well- known tourism region. Out of this rich history and beautiful fusion of the Breëland provenance, something uniquely is birthed: We call it the Marais Family Wines:

Buchukloof Cottage

The spacious farmhouse is ideal for large families where we offer four rooms where ten people can comfortably stay.  One of the rooms has an ensuite bathroom.  The second room has a king- sized bed and the third room offers a queen-sized bed.  There is a fourth room which caters for two people with 2 three- quarter beds.
