The Mandapeshwar Caves , near Mount Poinsur in Borivali, Mumbai, are an 8th-century rock-cut Shiva shrine. The caves, which were originally located on the banks of the Dahisar River, are smaller and less well-known than the nearby Kanheri Caves in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

1. Devour The Food At Khau Gali

The true essence of Bombay can be seen in the food, more importantly the street food. How can we talk about street food and not mention Borivali’s iconic Khau gali. The Khau gali offers you from classic vada pavs to a cheesy fusion of chaat. Shreeji stall is one of the iconic places at Borivali’s Khau gali. Shreeji includes cheese in everything, even chaat! They have  fusion chaats , where Italy meets Mumbai! This is an unusual hybrid that  combines chaats like pani-puri and sev puri  with the likes of  pizza and Panini.  These unique dishes are a delight because they are so cheesy, you will be left in a cheese-coma for a bit! No seriously!We’ve found their Dilkhush platter which is an amalgamation of  nachos, paneer, herbs and a molten layer of delicious cheese! 

2.  Trek At Sanjay Gandhi National Park

One of the major hikes within the park is the Highest Point hike. It is a half-day long hike to reach to the highest point (natural) in the city. While you stand atop, you can see below the Kanheri caves and the beautiful skyline of the city of Mumbai. See, if you can spot Goregaon and Powai from there.

Oh! Even better, there is a watchtower at the highest point from where you have a clear view of Powai lake, Vihar Lake and Tulsi Lake. Evening coffee here? Sounds like a great plan. Isn’t it?

Comprising  of around 109 caves where each cave has a stone plinth that functioned as a bed. These caves acted as a Buddhist Viharas , meant for living, studying, and meditating.

Did you know Borivali is home to the city’s first fish park? The park is located in  IC Colony and is spread across 10,000 sq ft (900 sqmts). The fish park has a custom-made entrance and eight big tanks with a capacity of 460 litres water, with each housing 25 to 30 tropical fish , with each tank having a different theme. The park is aimed at providing a relaxing experience for visitors as they observe fish swimming and swirling in water. For all athletes out there, the park also has a running track.

A GREEN PARADISE AMIDST THE CONCRETE JUNGLE.

Believe it or not, there isn’t any other metropolitan city in the world which boasts of a green cover as huge as SGNP within its’ municipal boundaries. If you want to have a quick and cheap getaway from the chaotic city, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) (aka Borivali National Park) is the place to go! It is not only a visual treat for wildlife photographers and trekkers but also suitable for fitness enthusiasts and children! The toy train, rented cycles available for cycling and the well laid out road makes the park suitable for all age groups.

Here’s everything you need to know about the SGNP (click on the section to see further details) :

The Park is a 104 sq. km protected forest area in Mumbai and consists of various nature trails and treks with gorgeous sights of wildlife, valleys, streams, lakes, flora and fauna. It is home to a varied species of vegetation, birds, mammals, butterflies, insects and amphibians. SGNP is known as the lung of the Metropolitan city, purifying much of the air pollution of Mumbai. A breath of fresh air from the concrete jungle, the park covers most of the western and northern borders of the city and is wedged between Borivali and Thane. The SGNP extends to areas such as the IIT Powai campus ,Aarey Colony, Ghodbunder village in Thane and the Nagla block. The two largest lakes of Mumbai -Tulsi and Vihar; which are the source of water to most of the South Mumbai residents are located in this national park.

The 2000 yrs old Kanheri Caves are a prime attraction and are located at a distance of 6kms from the SGNP main entrance at Borivali. The Gandhi Tekdi, a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi is also popular.

LOCATION & TIMINGS

• The park is easily accessible and well connected by road and railway networks. The main entrance gate to the SGNP is at Borivali East (on the Western Express Highway), which is approximately 40 kms to the north of South Mumbai. The closest railway station is Borivali Station on the Western line.  The Park remains closed on Mondays while there are public buses plying from Mumbai to the National Park on Sundays and public holidays.
• While the 5.5 sq.km Krishnagiri Upvan area serves as a public recreation zone within the park, the core areas have restricted access i.e they require permits/ trail passes from the Forest Department.
• The gates open at 7:30 am and close at 5:30 pm. From the SGNP entrance, you can take your own private vehicle up to the Kanheri Caves, from where most trails start. Alternatively, BEST Bus. No 188 operates inside the park which takes you till the caves. (ONLY ON SUNDAYS) Early trekkers will need a private vehicle, as the bus services are not available in the early morning hours. There is also an option to rent a seat in one of the many Omni shuttles which take you to the destination. A one way transfer costs you approx 50-60 Rs per person. The caves can be visited between 9 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 5.30 pm.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The SGNP is rich in biodiversity and thus every season has it’s own charm, bringing in a variety of experiences.

( GO FOR : Spotting wild animal species and various flora & fauna .)

The months from April to May are suitable for spotting wild animals such as spotted deers, Indian flying fox, Indian hare, porcupines and crocodiles. That being said, the climate does get quite hot and may not be as pleasant for trekking. But early morning trails will nonetheless be beautiful as the silk cotton and gulmohar burst into crimson hues, spreading a flame-of-the forest vibe.

As the jungle basks in the glory of the monsoon showers, a thick green blanket seems to spread across the hills and make a gorgeous landscape.  The beautiful surroundings might entice you to spend a long time at leisure. July to September are the best time to go for treks at the SGNP – it’s wet and slippery but the park does come alive

WINTER : ( GO FOR : Chilly Morning treks and Bird-watching .)

The months from November to February are ideal for birdwatchers. The climate is also quite suitable for treks and exploring the forest. Raptors and bird species such as the Shikra (Accipiter badius), ubiquitous Black Kites (Milvus migrans), Crested Honey Buzzard (Pernis ptilorhyncus) and the Crested Serpent Eagles (Spilornis cheela) can be spotted.

TREKS AND TRAILS IN SGNP

There are 5 major trails which can be explored with the guidance of naturalists, guides and tour agencies. The liveliness of the forest and wildlife can be experienced through these trails. All the trails require special permits from the Forest Department as they form a part of the core areas. The lesser known Nagla block trail near Thane is a favorite amongst the wildlife enthusiasts. (Details in the article. The BNHS ( Bombay Natural History Society), World Wide Fund for Nature and SGNP itself, conducts regular nature trails through the forest area. We advise you to read the safety tips in this article to have a safe and enjoyable nature trail.

1) SHILONDA TRAIL

a) Start and End points :   Located at a distance of 3 kms from the Borivali National Park gate. It runs along the              Northern end of the SGNP.

b) Distance to be covered :  Approx 1.5-2 kms.

c) Time required :  30-45 minutes.

d) Difficulty level :  Easy.

e)  Suitable for : Beginners, Old age groups as well as for experienced Wildlife Explorers.

f)   Time to visit :  MONSOONS, WINTER.

In the monsoons there is a stark rise in the spotting of various wild species; as they are granted respite from the summer heat. One can walk through the rippling streams or relax by the rocks while dipping their feet into the crystal clear water.  Bird watching is an enjoyable wildlife activity during the winter season.

a) Start and End points :  Located at a distance of approx 4-5 from the SGNP gate at Borivali, this trail runs along the western edge of the national park.

b) Distance to be covered : Approx 5 kms.

e)Suitable for : Beginners and experienced Wildlife trekkers.

The start of the trail is marked by the deciduous forest which later gives way to evergreen vegetation. The months of October to April are most suitable for seeing various bird species while butterflies can be spotted from August to November. There is an artificial water hole on the way where one can encounter some wildlife activity. The trail further leads to the suburb of Malad where crowded urban settlements have cropped up.

3) KANHERI CAVES ( Lower)

a) Start and End points :  Trail starts from near the entry point of SGNP itself and ends at the Kanheri Caves ( The place served as an educational centre for Buddhish Monks is approximately 2000 yrs old.)

b) Distance to be covered : Approx 5-6 kms.

c) Time required :  45 minutes-1 hour.

e) Suitable for : Beginners.

f)   Time to visit :  Throughout the Year.

This is a gradual climb through the jungle of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). It is the perfect time to see birds like Shikra, Grey Junglefowl, Eagles, butterflies and wild flowers. The trail leads through various kinds of vegetation. The Kanheri caves is excellent for viewing various bird species and spectacular views of the National Park on a clear day. The caves and structures are carved out of volcanic rocks and possess unique views of the biodiversity around the area.

4) Gaimukh trail ( Upper Kanheri trail / Highest Peak trail) 

a) Start and End points :  Trail starts from near the entry point of Kanheri Caves and ends at Jambulmal point. ( The highest peak in Mumbai and is approx.1600  ft above sea level.)

c) Time required :  3-4  hours.

d) Difficulty level :  Medium

e) Suitable for : Basic Fitness level required.

f)   Time to visit :  Monsoon and Winters.

The trek starts at the foothills of the Kanheri caves. The terrain can get steep with rock patches and slippery routes during the monsoon, and hence may not be suitable for beginners.  Although a bit challenging, it is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling trails of SGNP. The trail itself is beautiful, through thick forests where a variety of birds, plants, butterflies and even spiders, crabs can be spotted. The naturalist guiding your trek can help you spot these unique sights along the trail. The view from the highest point in Mumbai at the end of the trek (Jambulbal) and the waterfalls make this a unique trail, well worth the exertion. There is also a watchtower which can be used to look at the stunning view of the city and the lakes in the forest. You will also pass through a plateau ¾ distance along the trail, where a startling view of the city beyond the park can be seen. It is worthwhile to spend some time here.

5) THE NAGLA BLOCK TRAIL.

a) Start and End points :  Located near the Fountain Hotel on Ghodbunder Road, Thane.  Accessible from Thane Station on the Central line and from Bhayandar on the Western Line.

b) Distance to be covered : 3 kms

c) Time required :  2-2.5 hours.

d) Difficulty level : Easy.

e) Suitable for :  Beginners and All Age Groups.

f)   Time to visit :  Throughout the year.

You have to purchase tickets at the entrance, prices for which range from 30-50 rupees. This relatively unknown opening has an off-road path which is great for trekking and cycling. and quite easy to complete. You get a peek of the beautiful and vast Vasai lake after the journey through the lush green path which has an abundance of birds, shrubbery and other vegetation. You have to contact the NIC to obtain permission for this trail. LESSER KNOWN ROUTES

There are various paths which lead into the forest but are lesser known due to the dearth of information available to the public. So in case, you find travelling till Borivali inconvenient, you can choose the closest entry points of SGNP near you. The National Park is accessible from Goregaon (BNHS, Filmcity) and Malad on the western side. On the eastern side, Mulund, Bhandup, Thane and some other suburbs have gateways into the forest. But their access is being more monitored and restricted due to sightings of leopards in the areas. The lesser known areas such as Pachwad village, Yeoor and Yogi hills which are near the suburbs of Mulund and Thane are a regular picnic spot for the locals, as they sit by the waterfalls and enjoy the chilly monsoon breeze during the showers. ( The Yogi hills entrance in Mulund has shut down recently due to a recent Leopard attack in the area.) The Tikujiniwadi entrance and Yeoor at Thane don’t require a naturalist or guide, unless you are venturing deep into the forest beyond the SGNP guards gate, which is at the top of the hill. ( Both the routes coincide. You can go from the Tikujiniwadi route to Yeoor at the Upwan side.)

YEOOR HILLS  :

The SGNP can also be explored from two routes in Thane. One is Yeoor near Upvan lake and the other is Tikujiniwadi. Yeoor Hills near Upvan lake has a large number of visitors from neighboring areas and is a regular spot for fitness enthusiasts, cyclists and walkers. You can easily reach the place using Public transport, in case you don’t have a private vehicle.

1) From Thane station, the ‘PATONAPADA BUS’ takes you straight up the Yeoor hill to the last village, via Upvan lake road.There are also “PAWAR NAGAR’ buses which can be hailed to go to Yeoor. Get down at Gandhi Nagar, and then take a rickshaw or walk upwards to the hills.There is also a Bus till Upvan lake, which is at a distance of 5-8 minutes from the hills.

2) From Mulund, Bus number 110 takes you straight on top of Yeoor.

3) There is a Tikujiniwadi Bus from Thane Station which will take you to the forest area. The SGNP entrance is located 5-8 minutes away from the Bus stop.

PERMIT PROCEDURE

If you go with a travel organization or conservation NGO, the permit arrangements will typically be made by the travel organization for the group and you do not need to contact the Forest Department separately.

If you are bringing your own vehicle inside the park, you will need to purchase a parking ticket at the gate separately.

In case, you are going on your own or with your family or friend, the permit procedure is simple and just requires you to call the NIC 1-2 days in advance, ( NATURAL INFORMATION CENTRE) to make the arrangements for the day of the trail. You are assigned a naturalist to guide you through the forest area. The rates for these trails are priced reasonably and are quite affordable with the passes ranging from 100-350 Rs. The naturalist is to be paid an additional Rs 250 per hour. ( FIXED RATE)

WHAT TO CARRY

1) Wear comfortable outfits and full length trek pants to prevent mosquito bites. (Mosquitoes bites are quite an issue during the longer forest trails.)

2) Mosquito repellent.

3) Good shoes to have a proper grip while trekking on rocks or slippery patches.

4) A hat/ cap, windcheater. (During  Monsoons.)

5) At least 1-2 liters of water.

6) Some packed food or snacks for the journey/ trail.

7) A bag to collect your garbage and litter.

8) A Basic First Aid Kit. (Adhesive tape, Bandages and Antibiotic ointment, etc)

9) Any ID proof such as Aadhar, Passport or PAN Card which you may require for the trail permission.

10) Photography equipment as per your preference  (Recommended: 360 * Camera or a DSLR with a wide angle lens or macro lens if interested in clicking the small flora and fauna)

11) Backpack/ Daypack (less than 30 lit)

12) Trekking Pole, especially for people with weak knees.

13) Binoculars, especially if you are going all the way up the peak or the plateau

SAFETY & SECURITY

A lot of people venture into the wild alone and without guidance. There have been instances of wild creatures lurking around the areas and people getting lost in the forest. Venturing near the streams and waterfalls during the monsoons without proper guidance is also a risk.

• You are advised to contact the NIC ( Nature Information Centre) to get in touch with a naturalist or go with a group, as some trails are quite isolated and venturing into the wild alone can prove to be dangerous. Remember that the SGNP has many animals and even plants that can cause you harm, if you donot know what you are doing.
• In the monsoons especially, donot go on treks with steep slopes (especially the Gaimukh Trek) without shoes that cover your toes and provide good grip. Regular running shoes are sub optimal but manageable.
• Cover yourself as much as possible to protect from mosquitoes (seasonal issue) as also nettles, thorns etc. There are plants at the SGNP that can give you a major itch in case of direct exposure with the skin, not to speak of crabs, ants etc.
• For any trek longer than an hour, ensure that you atleast have 1 liter of water per person on you – more in summers.
• A basic first aid kit and a whistle to raise an alarm can com in handy in emergencies
• SPOTTED A LEOPARD? HERE’S WHAT TO DO :
• Always stay in a group. While in the group, flap your arms as if they are wings, make loud noises and do high jumps. Leopards usually are wary of groups and there is less likelihood of an attack. Leopards are good runners, swimmers and climbers so your only option out is by trying to scare him.
• After spotting the leopard, back down and leave the area as soon as possible. He is not up in your space, you are in his territory. Do not venture alone into the jungle or stare at the leopards. They take it up as a challenge. Pretend to ignore their sight in case of an encounter.

When in Mumbai, a visit to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) becomes imperative. The national park is also called the lungs of the city and is the only national park in the world known to be present within a city’s premises. Far from the bustle of the city, the environment inside the national park is completely peaceful and offers serenity.

Spread across a total area of 103 square kilometres, the governing body of the national park is the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the footfall of visitors each year rounds up to a little over 2 million. The entire area of the national park forms approximately 20% of Mumbai’s geographical area.

The park is home to over 40 species of mammals, 254 species of birds, 150 species of butterflies, 78 species of reptiles and amphibians and last but not the least and most important, over a surprisingly high population of 1300 species of plants.

At the exit gate of the park, there is a souvenir shop that offers artefacts, coffee table books on SGNP Biodiversity, trekking gears and apparel, books on tribes of Maharashtra, organic consumables and forest produce.

History of Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

The history of Sanjay Gandhi National Park dates back to 4th Century BCE when ancient civilizations of Sopara and Kalyan had a 45-kilometre trade route between each other and kingdoms of these trade capitals exchanged trades with Greece and Mesopotamia.

The trade route between Sopara and Kalyan passed through Kanheri Caves which was a site of learning as well as pilgrimage for Buddhists. The caves were sculpted out of one single basalt rock by Buddhist monks between 9th and 1st Century BCE.

What was earlier known as Krishnagiri National Park during the pre- independence era (1942), was later known as Borivali National Park in 1974 and was spread across an area of 20.26 square kilometres only. This was done in 1942 under the Bombay National Park Act.

However, later on the park area was expanded twice. Once in 1976 and later again in 1981. During the expansion of 1981, the area that came under the National Park measured 82.25 Square kilometre.

The park was named as Sanjay Gandhi National Park, after the elder son of ex- Prime Minister of India, Ms. Indira Gandhi in 1996 and the park area was further expanded to 103 square kilometres simultaneously.

Location and Geography of Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is sandwiched between the northern suburbs of Mumbai and the city of Thane. Except for its northern part, that lies in Thane, the rest of the park area is located in Mumbai. There are two man made lakes inside the park premises, Tulsi Lake and Vihar Lake that meet the water needs of the city’s population.

Due to its green cover, the temperature inside the national park is always on the lower side as compared to that of the city and also receives sufficient rainfall during monsoon. The elevation of the area is between 30 metres and 480 metres.

Timings and Entry Fees of Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

Timings: Sanjay Gandhi National Park is closed on Mondays. On the rest of the days, it is open from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM for morning walkers with monthly or annual passes. For day visitors, it is open from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

Entry Fees or Tickets: The entry fee to visit Sanjay Gandhi National Park is Rs. 58 for adults and Rs. 31 for children. There is a shuttle service that operates between Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri Caves that costs Rs. 60 per person. The Camera fee is Rs. 50.

Biodiversity of sanjay gandhi national park mumbai.

The biodiversity of Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai is mostly an influence of the Sahyadris. The flora and fauna belong mostly to the ones indigenous of the hill ranges of Western Ghats. The dense forest has an estimated 800 types of mauves widespread across the length and breadth of the park from Karnala to Yeoor hills to Tungareshwar to few parts of Film City.

The forest habitat being the most dominating habitat of the national park, there is an estimated 1300 species of flowering plants alone in SGNP. Karvi (flowers that bloom once every 8 years) shrub dominates most of the space and are denser in the inner parts of the forest that mostly remains out of reach from visitors and hence, is the most beautiful part during full blossom.

Bamboo is another flora that is quite widespread in the entire lower area of the national park.

The dense forest habitat includes trees belonging to mixed-deciduous type, which specifically include the Tectona, Albizzia, Terminalia, Holarrhena, Firmiana, Dalbergia, Garuga, Grewia, Adina, Ficus, Madhuca, Caraya, Butea.

WildLife at Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

Spotted deer are a common sight at the national park while one is strolling around. The major fauna of SGNP is the big cat, i.e the large leopard and are in large numbers here. Striped Hyenas can be spotted around Yeoor hills side of the national park.

Black-naped hares, porcupines, palm civet are also among the inhabitants of the national park but are seen very rarely. The four-horned Antelope is also a rare sight given their shy nature. Hanuman langur, Bonnet Macaque and Rhesus Macaque are among the monkey species.

There are 17 species of bats that inhabit the national park, out of which, the Indian flying fox is the biggest of all.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a treasure trove for any birder. The Gaumukh Trail gives one a great experience with regards to bird watching. There are a significant number of species of woodpeckers and kingfishers along with the Paradise flycatcher and the much elusive Trogon. The brown-headed Barbet and Parakeets can’t just keep mum and one would be delighted to hear the calls of Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher or the Malabar Whistling Thrush singing melodiously and low voices of the Spotted babbler.

Reptiles, Amphibians and Butterflies

There are a total of 170 species of butterflies out of 1500 species in all of India. Out of these the most common is the Blue Mormon, which is also the state butterfly of Maharashtra. Others include the Blue Oak Leaf, Jezebels, Yellow and White Orange Tips, Sailors, Monarchs and many more.

When it comes to reptiles, crocodiles dominate the scenes of Tulsi Lake of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Apart from the crocodiles, snakes are second highest in numbers spread across the length and breadth of the national park. The varieties include, Pythons, Cobras, Bamboo-pit Vipers, Russell Viper and the Ceylonese Cat Snake, a very rare species recently discovered by Bombay National History Society.

Giant Wood Spiders are a common sight during monsoon with large designer webs. Silk Cotton bugs and beetles are also found in abundance here.

Tiger and Lion Safari at Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

The safari rides inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai are 30 minutes long and done between 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a one-hour lunch break between 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM. There is a minimum requirement of 15 people for the safari rides to commence.

The cost of tiger safari alone is INR 70 for adults and INR 28 for kids between the age group of 5 to 12. The cost of combined tiger and lion safari is INR 81 for adults and INR 32 for children aged 5 to 12 years.

The safari tickets are non- refundable and non- transferable.

Kanheri Caves in Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

The Kanheri Caves located inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai are listed among the heritage sites and are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The caves date back to around 1st Century BCE making them over 2400 years old. The name of the Kanheri Caves is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Krishnagiri’, meaning ‘black mountain’ due to the volcanic basalt rocks that form the base of the mountains.

The caves are a cluster of 109 caves in total. Not all caves are accessible. The caves contain Buddhist relics, carvings, paintings and inscriptions. Most of the caves represent ‘Buddhist Viharas’ that were used for living, studying and meditating. The larger caves are called Chaityas’ that were used as prayer halls that have rock cut pillars and stupas. There are caves that depict a dining hall too.

There are rock cut stairs on the mountains to make way for traveling from one cave to another.

Treks and Nature Trails at Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

Being situated at a higher altitude, the national park offers quite a few options for treks as well as nature trails. Some of the most common trails are listed here.

Kanheri Upper Trail

The most sought-after trail is the Upper Kanheri trail, especially a favorite of Sunday walkers. The trail starts from the park gate to the top of Kanheri Caves. The trail requires quite a bit of legwork however, offers beautiful views of the rich diversity of the jungle. Most of the hike is well shaded and passes through rocky edges of the mountain and also involves a short climb just before one reaches the top. The view of the entire national park is totally worth the huffing.

Gaumukh Trail or Bamboo Hut Trail

This trail is a long one however, is famous for its birding trail and ends at the highest point of the park at 1000 feet ASL. The end point of the trail is called the Gaumukh point located at the top of Kanheri Caves.

Highest Point Trail via Ashok Van

This common trail passes through the ‘Ashok Van trail’ which is a part of the thick part of the forest lined with huge Ashoka trees. While negotiating through this trail one comes across rocky hill slopes and streams. As the name of the trail suggests, the end point of the trail takes one to the highest point of Mumbai from where one gets a 360-degree view of the entire city including its 3 lakes, Vihar Lake, Tulsi Lake and Powai Lake .

Shilonda Trail

The base of the trail is located just before one reaches the foothills of Kanheri Caves and leads towards the north. The trail is around 4 kilometres long.

Malad Trail

The Malad Trail is towards the western edge of the national park where one can find a varied vegetation starting from dry-deciduous to much greener patch as one progress on the trail. The dry-deciduous vegetation mostly comprises Teak, Red Silk Cotton, Palash, Bamboo, etc. The end of the trail opens at the Malad.

Other jungle trails have also been introduced by the park officials, namely- Kashimira Trail and Nagla Block Trail, and Yeoor Trail. The Nagla Block Trail starts at Sasupada village along the Mumbai- Ahmedabad highway and ends at the Vasai Creek.

The Nature Trials through Nature Information Centre (NIC) of the park can be booked a day or two in advance. There is a fee involved that ranges between INR 75 to 300 and an additional charge for a naturalist who would accompany the visitors on the trail. The charge for hiring a naturalist ranges anywhere between INR 400 to 1000. NIC also arranges butterfly walks, birding excursions and overnight camping.

Additionally, the local conservation bodies and NGOs like the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and World Wide Fund for Nature - India (WWF-India) also arrange guided walks. One of the most famous nature walks organized by BNHS and WWF India is the Karvi Trail which happens once every eight years since that’s how often the Karvi flowers are in full bloom.

Activities at Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

Butterfly garden.

There are a total of 170 species of butterflies at the butterfly garden of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The Nature Information Centre (NIC) arranges guided butterfly excursions at the national park.

One can explore the greatest number of butterflies between the months of September to January when they happen to be more vibrant. NIC provides a pocket guide to identify the butterflies.

The huge area of the park allows cycling enthusiasts to fulfil their desire to cycle through a relatively empty patch, which is otherwise impossible given Mumbai’s traffic snarls.

One can either get their own bicycles or even rent them inside the park at a mere fee of INR 60 for 2 hours. One needs to pay a deposit of INR 300 along with their ID proofs. There are a limited number of bicycles available in the park hence, it is recommended to either go early or one would need to wait till one is available.

Weekends are usually demanding days.

Boating timings are between 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with lunch break between 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. The tickets for boating can be booked online and verified at the ticket counter.

Charges for 2-seater boats are INR 48 and charges for 4-seater boats INR 97. Each boat ride lasts for 15 minutes.

Toy Train Ride

The Toy Train inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai is called Vanrani. The narrow-gauge train ride tickets can also be booked online and need to be verified at the ticket counter. The timings of the train ride are between 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with lunch break between 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM.

Each ride lasts for 20- 25 minutes. The charges are- INR 50 per journey for adults (12 yrs and above) and INR 19 per journey for children aged between 5 to 12.

The one condition for the train ride to commence is that the minimum number of 20 people should be available for the ride.

There are over-night campings arranged by Nature Information Centre (NIC), SGNP. They offer all types of accommodation ranging from tents to pine houses to guest houses to dormitories.

Nearest Railway Station to Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai- Borivali (Western line)

The national park is at a walking distance from Borivali Railway Station (East). If anyone isn’t willing to walk, one can also hire an auto rickshaw or a taxi to reach the park.

All intercity buses going towards Borivali East stop at the gate of the park.

Trump safe after suspect in apparent assassination attempt is arrested; officials say he had AR-style rifle, scope and GoPro

A man is in custody after shots were fired Sunday afternoon in what the FBI is calling an apparent “attempted assassination” of Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida — two months after an attempt on the former president’s life at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Trump, who was rushed to safety during the incident, said in a Truth Social post Sunday night that “it was certainly an interesting day!” He also thanked Secret Service and law enforcement, writing in all capital letters that “The job done was absolutely outstanding.”

Nearly 10 hours earlier, shortly before 2 p.m., Trump was playing a round of golf near his Mar-a-Lago home when a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle with a scope in the bushes outside the course, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said at a news conference.

The Secret Service opened fire on the man, who was able to get away, fleeing in a black Nissan. As shots rang out, it was unclear whether the person "was able to take a shot at our agents," Rafael Barros, special agent in charge of the Secret Service's Miami field office, said at the news conference.

A nearby witness took a picture of the car and told authorities, Bradshaw said, helping lead to an arrest. The man taken into custody was identified as Ryan Wesley Routh , 58, according to three senior law enforcement officials. His identity was not released during Sunday's news conference.

An AR-style rifle was recovered from the scene, law enforcement officials told NBC News. Alongside the fence by the rifle were two backpacks and a GoPro camera, Bradshaw said.

Routh has a long criminal and civil court history , including a conviction for possessing a machine gun in 2022. A person named Ryan Routh lived for decades in North Carolina, and a Ryan Routh recently lived in Hawaii, according to property records. NBC News has not confirmed whether it is the same Routh who was taken into custody Sunday.

Routh previously told other news outlets that he had been in Ukraine to help its war effort. He expressed frustration  to Semafor  last year about Ukraine’s caution regarding admitting foreign soldiers, and he told  Newsweek Romania  in June 2022 that he was working to recruit people to the war effort.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement that Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, was “safe” after the incident.

Trump left the golf course in his motorcade a couple of hours after the incident and headed back to his Mar-a-Lago resort, a source familiar with the matter said. He has arrived at Mar-a-Lago, a separate source said.

A senior law enforcement official briefed on the incident told NBC News that Trump was on the golf course when what sounded like gunfire was heard in the near distance.

He was between the fifth and sixth holes on the golf course when the incident occurred, the source familiar with the matter said. Trump was golfing with his friend and donor Steve Witkoff, the source said.

Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said in an MSNBC interview that the federal government would take over the case and that the Justice Department will file charges.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who ran against Trump in the Republican presidential primaries before he dropped out and endorsed him, said on X that the state would conduct its own investigation, adding that “the people deserve the truth about the would be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee.”

Sunday’s incident will not affect Trump’s campaign schedule this week, a source said. Trump’s campaign had announced that he would hold a town hall in Flint, Michigan, on Tuesday. He is also scheduled to speak at campaign events in New York on Wednesday, followed by a speech in Washington, D.C., on Thursday and a rally in North Carolina on Saturday.

The second attempt on Trump’s life comes amid heightened partisan rhetoric and fears over political violence just 51 days before Election Day in a presidential race in which polling consistently indicates a tight race between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Politicians from both sides of the aisle condemned political violence Sunday and expressed gratitude that Trump was safe.

Harris said in a statement that she was “deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt of former President Trump today,” adding that she is “thankful” that Trump is safe.

“As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence,” she said. “We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence.”

Her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, voiced a similar sentiment on X, saying that “violence has no place in our country.”

President Joe Biden said in a statement that he has been briefed on the situation and that he was “relieved that the former President is unharmed.”

“As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety,” Biden said.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said on X that he spent “a few hours” with Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday and called him “unstoppable.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on X that “the perpetrator must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Trump’s campaign team sent a fundraising email Sunday citing the incident. Trump signed the email, which said his “resolve is only stronger after another attempt on my life.”

Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, said on X that Trump was "in good spirits."

"Still much we don’t know, but for I’ll be hugging my kids extra tight tonight and saying a prayer of gratitude," Vance said.

About two months have passed since bullets whizzed by Trump’s head, one striking him in the ear, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, when a supporter was killed and two people were critically wounded. The Secret Service shot and killed the gunman. During the chaos, Trump was surrounded by Secret Service agents, who escorted him offstage as he pumped his fist and mouthed "fight," which has become a rallying cry among his supporters.

The Trump campaign and his security apparatus altered campaign rallies after the Butler shooting. While Trump’s team initially planned to stop holding outdoor rallies, the Secret Service ultimately approved bulletproof glass to protect him at outdoor campaign events.

Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe is traveling to Florida, according to two Secret Service officials. The previous Secret Service director, Kimberly Cheatle, stepped down after the previous attempt on Trump's life.

Trump campaign co-managers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said in a memo to staff members Sunday that "for the second time in two months, an evil monster attempted to take the life of President Trump."

“President Trump and everyone accompanying him are safe thanks to the great work of the United States Secret Service,” they said in the memo, obtained by NBC News.

Lying at the heart of Moscow, the Red Square and the Kremlin are just two of the must-see tourist attractions; they are the historical, political and spiritual heart of the city – and indeed Russia itself.

A fascinating city to wander around, stunning cathedrals, churches, and palaces lie side-by-side with bleak grey monuments and remains from the Soviet state. In addition to its plethora of historical and cultural tourist attractions, Moscow is home to world-class museums, theaters and art galleries.

Renowned for its performing arts, fantastic ballets and amazing circus acts, catching a show while in Moscow is a must. The wealth of brilliant restaurants, trendy bars, and lively nightlife means there is something for everyone to enjoy.

17. Tsaritsyno Palace

Once the summer residence of Catherine the Great, the stunning Tsaritsyno Palace is now a museum-reserve. The architecture is magnificent and there is a lovely park surrounding it for visitors to explore.

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

The exhibits on display look at the life of the empress as well as the history of Tsaritsyno itself. The huge palace grounds are also home to some other delightful buildings with the elegant opera house and wonderful brickwork of the Small Palace being particularly impressive to gaze upon.

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. In addition to this there is the fascinating Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics which is dedicated to space exploration and the fun Moskvarium aquarium even offers you the chance to swim with dolphins.

With lots of eateries scattered about and numerous entertainment options such as horse-riding and zip-lining, there is something for everyone to enjoy; the Friendship of Nations fountain truly is wonderful.

15. Kremlin Armoury

One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

Once the royal armory, there are loads of fascinating objects on display. Perusing the many sabers, jewelry, armor and more is as interesting as it is educational and entertaining and the swords are so finely crafted that you’ll almost wish you could pick up one and wield if yourself.

Established in 1851, the museum is situated in the Moscow Kremlin.

14. GUM Department Store

Standing for ‘Main Universal Store’ in Russian, GUM is stunning. Its wonderful skylights and beautiful facades mean it doesn’t look out of place alongside its illustrious neighbors on Red Square.

With over 200 shops, boutiques and upmarket eateries inside, it is a shopaholic’s heaven and concerned partners will be glad to find more affordable options alongside luxury brands such as Dior and Prada.

The main department store in the city, GUM was opened in 1893. The stunning architecture makes it well worth a visit even if shopping isn’t your thing.

It’s not often that public transport looks like a work of art. So many stops on the Moscow Metro will astound visitors with their beauty and elegance.

Decked in marble and with frescoes covering the walls, the stations are amazing to gaze upon and are part of one of the longest metro systems in the world, with the first stations opened in 1935.

12. Arbat Street

An elegant yet lively street, Arbat is full of impressive architecture and was once a popular place to live for aristocrats, artists, and academics.

A historic place, it is down Arbat Street that Napoleon’s troops are said to have headed on their way to capture the Kremlin.

Nowadays, there are many cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as various monuments and statues to former residents such as Alexander Pushkin who was reputed to be a lover of the Russian Empress due to his massive influence in court.

11. Novodevichy Convent

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Home to the most extensive and impressive collection of Russian fine art in the world, the State Tretyakov Gallery is definitely worth visiting when in Moscow for the wealth of amazing art pieces that it has on display.

Having started out as the private art collection of the Tretyakov brothers, there are now over 130,000 exhibits. Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

An absolute must for art lovers, the State Tretyakov Gallery will delight visitors with all that is has to offer.

6. Kolomenskoye

Once a royal estate, Kolomenskoye is now a museum-reserve and lies a few kilometers outside of the city center. A captivating place to visit, there is a plethora of history on show and the site overlooks the Moskva River.

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR. 

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated. 

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín​ or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable. 

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.
