Lalaria Beach in Skiathos

The white pebble beach at Lalaria is one of the most famous in the Greek Islands and featured on most postcards of Skiathos. Steep sun-bleached limestone cliffs drop to a long beach of white stones and pebble that create aquamarine waters that get cameras clicking constantly. The beach is accessible only by boat, weather permitting.

Lalaria is a 10 kilometres sea trip from Skiathos Town on the northern coast and there are plenty of boat tours from Skiathos port.

Lalaria beach is on the itinerary of almost every pleasure boat on Skiathos so the beach can at certain times of the day get very busy.

Excursions boats to Lalaria often call in at neighbouring Kastro and depart from Skiathos port at about 10am. Those who hire their own boat can avoid the day trip crowds and get the beach to themselves.

Lalaria is the Greek word for the pebbles that give the beach its name. Day trip visitors must negotiate wooden gangplanks on visiting boats to get down to the beach.

The shore is covered in grey and white stones and pebbles polished smooth by the sea and backed by steep grey and white cliffs.

The sea water here is extraordinarily clear and comes in amazing shades of blue. Visitors can see the sea bed even far out where it gets very deep.

The bleached white stones and submerged marble rocks help create the dazzling aquamarine seashore.

The pebbles and rocks quickly soak up, then radiate, the heat so it can get seriously hot along the shore with no shade. The usual two hours allowed by visiting boat captains is usually enough.

At the west end of the beach is a huge rock that forms a natural arched bridge between the beach and the sea. Those who swim through the archway called Tripia Petra are said to get younger.

Excursion boats often call at the beach below the Kastro, the fortified former capital built in the 14th century that stand on a rock outcrop on the north-east tip of the island.

It used used to house more than 20 churches and 300 odd homes but only a few ruins survive. Ther si a small beach below of shingle and stone.

Nearby, and accessible only by boat, are three sea grottos, named Galazia (Blue), Skotini (Dark) and Chalkini (Copper) that are ofen included on sea trips.

How to get to Lalaria Beach and what you need to know

Hi guys! Today I’m going to tell you how to get to Lalaria Beach and some things you absolutely need to know before getting to this Skiathos’ greek beach to avoid a bad day!

Lalaria Beach

Lalaria Beach is a stunning beach located on the northern side of Skiathos island that wouldn’t need any introduction, just the following pic:

I know you can’t believe it, but I didn’t use any filter taking this shot of Lalaria Beach. This is exactly what your eyes will see while you get to Lalaria Beach if the sun is shining.

This beach is made of white rounded pebbles , and it’s the only beach of this kind in Skiathos.

The fact that you can get to Lalaria Beach only by boat (there’s no way to get there by car and no walkpath down the hill) helps to keep it kind of magic.

Lalaria Beach it’s a pretty pristine beach, so there are no services on place, remember to bring some water with you!

How to get to Lalaria Beach

To get to Lalaria Beach you need to catch one of the many boats leaving from the old Skiathos’ port , that offer many different trips all around Skiathos and/or near greek islands.

Now, before booking one of these excursions to get to Lalaria Beach and other nice places around Skiathos there are many essential things you need to know .

In Skiathos there are many boat trips

With the boat trips in Skiathos you can reach some of the following destinations, one or more with different combinations dependings on the tour and the company you choose:

• Lalaria Beach, the white candy pebbles beach you saw in the picture ;
• Kastro Beach , another beach located in the North of Skiathos, small and sandy;
• Tsougrias beach , a nice beach located on the little Tsougrias island , a few kilometers south-east from Skiathos;
• Skopelos , another greek island in the Sporades archipelago, more natural and relaxed than Skiathos;
• various other possibilities and combinations that you’ll find on the signs in front of the boats or that they will personally show you while walking in front of the port.

And now, let’s start with the things you need to pay attention to.

If you have a look at some reviews on Tripadvisor or similar websites about these boat tours, you’ll find plenty of bad reviews of people saying that the tour has been canceled or destination has changed without notice because boat crew said that sea and wind conditions wasn’t good enough to approach Lalaria beach.

Many of them are basically complaining about the fact that there was no notice and no refund after they’ve been brought to some different and not appealing beaches.

So, because of the “Meltemi” wind often blowing from the North of the island, that may cause a rough see, always check with an app like Windfinder the wind forecast for the day you want to get to Lalaria Beach.

The best would be checking weather and wind conditions and booking the trip one day before, not many days in advance, as forecasts may change again.

If you see that tomorrow is not windy, you can book and you probably won’t lose your money (as you need to pay in advance). Otherwise better wait another day.

The Time of the day

Lalaria Beach is a wonderful beach, but it has no shadow and no services nor umbrellas.

So, if you’re going in the middle of the day you should consider bringing with you some food, an umbrella and of course wnough water.

Most of the boats going to Lalaria Beach usually leave two times per day , the first in the morning, leaving at 10 am and getting back at 2.30pm and a second one in the afternoon, leaving around 3 pm and getting back at 7.30.

The journey is around 40 minutes one way, so you should think about which one to book :

• If you’re in Skiathos in the middle of the summer (June to mid August) you can choose the afternoon trip , that is less crowded and there’s less risk to get sunburned than the midday hours.
• If you get to Lalaria Beach after mid August instead, it’s better going with the morning tour , as in the afternoon the beach is going under a complete shadow of the hill and you can’t fully enjoy the water color.

I think boat companies are trying to ask different prices when on different days/months/moods.

For the classic Lalaria Beach 3 hours tour I paid 12.50 euro, but I read on some reviews that other people paid different prices.

Kastro Beach

Before you get to Lalaria Beach, some boat trips also let you jump for one hour to Kastro Beach .

So instead of staying 3 hours in Lalaria, you can choose 1 hour in Kastro and almost 2 hours in Lalaria.

You can make your choice directly on the boat, just getting down at “first stop” or “second stop” 😀 .

Kastro beach is a little sandy and rocky beach not particularly stunning, except for its eastern corner where you can find nice colorful rocks and cristal waters!

At Kastro beach there’s also a bar and you may walk up the hill to see a few old town’s ruins.

Amazing Day Trips to Take Around Skiathos by Boat

Feel like you’re the star of your own show on the Greek island of Skiathos , best known for being one of the filming locations featured in the hit Hollywood musical Mamma Mia. Movie fame aside, the island has more than 60 gorgeously rugged beaches backed by steep white cliffs and thick pine forests as well as plenty of rickety tavernas and cosy bars in sleepy seafront villages. To see some of the island’s best-kept secrets, it’s best to hire a boat. Here we reveal some of the best sailing trips to embark upon around this special island.

Lalaria Beach

This knock-out of a beach is only reachable by boat from the port at Skiathos town and sits on the northeastern tip of the island. Expect wide sugary sand framed by soaring white cliffs. What makes this spot really unique is the natural rock bridge which spans the sand and arches over the crystal clear sea. The magnificent “blue” and “black” caves are located just before Lalaria and are definitely worth a visit. Be warned, there’s not a hint of a beach bar along this strip so take refreshments ashore.

Mandraki Beach

This calm beach sits on a stretch of unspoilt coastline close to undulating hills carpeting the Koukounaries ecological park on the west coast of the island. It’s roughly 15km (9mi) west of Skiathos Town. The golden sands are superbly soft and the waters clear. There are no watersport rentals on the beach but there is a shack-like taverna where you can stack up on snacks and drinks. As the beach is sheltered by pine trees and off the beaten track, it attracts the odd nudist.

Koukounaries Beach

This is the best-known beach in Skiathos but this stretch of sand never gets overcrowded even in the summer months. Sail into the bay and alight with fragrant pine trees scenting the air and sands as soft as talc underfoot. Thanks to its paradisiacal appearance, Koukounaries has been voted the most unspoiled natural beach of the Mediterranean. Despite its untouched guise, the beach has good amenities with restaurants and small hotels peppering the shoreline. There are also watersports on offer, a beach bar and sun loungers for rent.

Tsougria Island

Stand beneath the clock tower in Skiathos town and you’ll get a clear view of Tsougria Island. It’s only a short ride over to this outcrop with the boat ride costing around €10 if you don’t have your own vessel and cruises regularly stop there. When you arrive, bask on one of four sandy beaches or hike up the island’s rocky ridge where you’ll be rewarded by panoramic views of Skiathos and nearby Skopelos. Tsougria is uninhabited but during summer a slickly-styled beach bar opens on the northwest coast.

Kastro Castle

The easiest way to access this 14th-century abandoned castle on the northern tip of Skiathos is by boat from the town. From there it’s a strenuous hike upwards. The castle was restored after Greek independence from the Ottomans in the 1830s and has moved location more than once to avoid raids by pirates. The gate and drawbridge give this fortress a fairytale feel, while a mosque and three churches are other attractions that sit on the site. The largest church, Agios Nikolaos, is open to the public.

You may recognise the island of Skopelos as a Mamma Mia filming location. If you think Skiathos is green, wait until you see this place. Set to the east of Skiathos, and accessible by boat in around 80 minutes, more than half of the island is covered by virgin pine forest. Olive and almond trees also grow here, while honey is another local product. If you venture into the main town you’ll find a mix of charming tavernas and bars. Or if it’s a spot of relaxation you’re after, the island’s 70km (43mi) of coastline offers tree-lined shingle and sandy beaches including Kastani beach which also served as a Mamma Mia backdrop.

Eat and drink Skopelos

Wander through the narrow cobbled streets of Skopelos town to Rodi, an elegant courtyard restaurant festooned with orange trees and wildflowers. The menu features classic Mediterranean dishes with a twist. Meaty highlights include spiced lamb tagine and pork chops with citrus sauce and caramelised apples. The local cheeses are another must-try and all of the dishes are flavoured with herbs and greens picked from the kitchen garden. After dinner head to Mercurius for a fill of the best cocktails on the island.

Punta Peninsula

With a fine collection of golden beaches, evergreen pine forests and olive groves, this idyllic location is well worth marking on your Skiathos sailing itinerary. The best thing is the Punta peninsula is only a few minutes from Skiathos Town and very close to the airport. Drop anchor at the gorgeous windswept Lazareta beach for a lazy day of sunbathing and swimming with Greek snacks back on board to keep your energy levels up.

Papadiamantis Street

The lively main street in Skiathos old town is the perfect place to let your hair down after a day at sea. Before you decide on where to have dinner, stock up on local delicacies and products to take home from the upmarket Ergon deli which also has outposts in Athens, Thessaloniki and Mayfair, London. Nicos is a limoncello-hued taverna popular with locals and serves delicious grilled seafood. Meanwhile, the best spot for sunset cocktails and a view over the harbour and Aegean sea is The Windmill.

Meet your driver

Stefanos was born in Athens and at the age of seven, he moved with his family to Skiathos. His father had discovered the island and loved it, so they decided to make it their home. Since then, they have been living on the island.

In 1984, at the age of 14, Stefanos began working in Koukounaries Beach at a water sports center. His passion and love for waterskiing led him to this profession, and he decided to dedicate his life to teaching people how to waterski.

In 1995, he opened his own waterski school on the island. on Vassilias beach Since then, he has been running the business with his family, and life in Skiathos has been wonderful.

Summers are busy, with work every day, while winters are more relaxed.

Beach only accessible from sea, pretty from afar...iconic arch beach mostly white pebbles...home to extensive gull? colony which smells unpleasant and beach below nests strewn with a number of dead, rotting gulls, which I appreciate is natural in this environment. However, shame on mankind as lots of discarded and 'washed up' plastic waste together with other detritus/rubbish evident along beachline amongst pebbles. 45 min duration was sadly long enough (did a bag full of litter pick during our visit) Would suggest regular big beach clean up organised as currently not living up to the tourist bait hype!

Is a very beautiful beach, but you should rent a boat to go alone in the morning.. early in the morning.. otherwise it will be full of people and boats😄

Nice beach clear water absolutely nothing there and only accessable by boat. Be aware You can not take the Peebles as apparently there is a fine.

Take the boat from skiathos port and do Lalara , kastro and tsgouria. €30 for the day trip and so worth it. 2 hours at lalara with its white stone beach only assessable by boat. Beautiful clear water there is shade under the cliff . The water is so clear amazing location and must been fine if visiting skiathos.

We were on an excursion and were supposed to go to this ‘beach’ in the morning but the conditions weren’t right apparently. We eventually arrived at about 17:30 after a very long day and as previous reviews have said, we were also dumped on the ‘beach’. It’s a pebbly beach which felt like a million bits of broken glass stabbing your feet. It hurt like hell!!! I did go in the water which was lovely but I think if you’re not a confident swimmer then don’t attempt it on a choppy day. There’s certainly little dignity in getting in and out of the water, but we were all in the same boat so to speak. I really wouldn’t bother to be honest, way overrated.

I have taken 3 good daily cruises to Skopelos Mamma Mia Island :the chapel, Panormos, Kastani and Milies beaches, Lalaria beach, Tsougria beach and the Dragon Cave. Kastani beach is in the south of Skopelos and as Lalaria beach it is known for its crystal clear waters and it was used as a location in the film mamma Mia "Does your mother know?". Panormos beach was the set of "Our last summer" - mamma Mia. Lalaria beach with its turquoise water is surrounded by the famous white pebbles smoothed by the sea since mythological times.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
