Located in the middle of the Ohio River, Blennerhassett Island is a magical place where history comes to life. Here, you can walk through palatial mansion halls that rival George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate and spend a day in the life of Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett as if you were part of the story. Once you step foot on the island, you’ll be transported back to the 18th century and you won’t want to come back!

Blennerhassett Island is a great place for a family trip where you and the kids can explore and learn about our state and country’s history. If you’ve never been before or want to learn more, here’s everything you need to know to plan one of the best family day trips in West Virginia!

“The most beautiful home in the west”

Blennerhassett Island’s gorgeous Palladian mansion and museum is visited by 40,000 people each year, making it one of the most popular travel destinations in West Virginia. But getting to the island is only half the fun. Hop aboard the Island Belle Sternwheeler, which departs Point Park in Parkersburg on the top of every hour, and enjoy a leisurely ride back in time on the charming, steam-driven paddle boat. Travel pro tip : Purchase a package ticket, which includes the boat ride, museum and mansion tour and a horse-drawn wagon ride around the island. Make sure to check the sternwheeler schedule .

Once you’re on the island, take time to explore the park grounds and enjoy the beautiful Blennerhassett Mansion. This replica of the original mansion is a living relic from America’s past and will have you in wonder for hours. Considered the most beautiful home in the west when the Blennerhassett’s occupied it in the 18th century, we still think it’s deserving of that title.

Learn about history by experiencing it

Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett were wealthy Irish aristocrats who knew how to throw a party. Their beautiful mansion made Blennerhassett Island the Ohio River’s most popular destination. But the island was more than a place to mingle. The mansion was also headquarters for Aaron Burr’s alleged treasonous plot to create a new country independent of the United States.

The original mansion burned down but a reconstructed replica was built on the original foundation. The island’s history is preserved and you’ll see it all come to life on the living tours you and your family can enjoy at the park. Plan a trip and learn more about the island’s fascinating history.

Blennerhassett Island is a great place for a day trip

Spend the day at Blennerhassett Island or make this park a stop on your spring or summer tour of West Virginia’s beautiful mid-Ohio valley. If you need a place to stay the night, check out the lodge at nearby North Bend State Park . This park also has several campsites and cozy cabins and is known for its outdoor recreation and access to the North Bend Rail Trail .

While you’re in town, use your package ticket to visit the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History in Parkersburg. This museum has three floors of historic artifacts and memorabilia, including prehistoric weapons, jewelry and odd items such as a “burning glass.” While you’re there, visit the gift shop for fine art and West Virginia crafts.

For a special night out, plan on attending a dinner cruise around Blennerhassett Island on the Island Belle Sternwheeler. Scheduled on June 7 , July 5 , August 2 and September 6 , these cruises include a country-style dinner and cost $27 for adults and $21 for kids. Once you finish dinner, you’ll be returned to Point Park for a free concert.

Find your escape when visiting the timeless paradise of Blennerhassett Island, the jewel of the Ohio River! Experience nature, discover the history, and enjoy a delicious, prefixed dinner in the historic town of Parkersburg. A 20-minute ride in a sternwheeler ferry will take us to the Island for a glimpse of life on a colonial plantation. Guides wearing period-accurate costumes will conduct us through the mansion. Take a seat in the back of a horse-drawn wagon for a tour around the quaint scenery, enjoy concessions, and visit the Island’s eclectic gift shop. After the Island, visit the Julia-Ann Square Historic District, the largest and oldest historic district in WV.  Comprised of approximately 126 homes, the district’s structures are the Second Empire, 19 century eclectic and Queen Ann styles dating from 1850 to 1910. Enjoy a self-guided historic walking tour of the District with a stop to visit one of the homes, where the owner will share a unique history. Pre-fixed dinner included at family-owned Italian restaurant.

Blennerhassett island.

National Historic Landmark -- Parkersburg, West Virginia -- Wood County

Blennerhassett Island is a three-mile long land mass in the center of the Ohio River southwest of Parkersburg, West Virginia . It was home for American Indians since prehistoric times, including that of Nemacolin, a prominent Delaware, who lived there in the 1760s. Artifacts from the island are displayed at the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History in downtown Parkersburg. George Washington visited the island during his 1770 explorations of the Ohio, but the island is best known, and named for, Irish aristocrat Harman Blennerhassett, who made it his home in 1798. His 7,000 square foot Palladian mansion burned in 1811, but has been reconstructed for use as a central landmark at Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park . Blennerhassett and Aaron Burr were accused of treason by President Thomas Jefferson. Both were acquitted and released from prison, but Blennerhassett's reputation was irreparably tainted.

Take a self-guided tour of the Blennerhasset Museum and browse the gift shop, before boarding the Island Belle sternwheeler to Blennerhassett Island, located in Parkersburg, WV. A 30-minute horse-drawn wagon ride showcases the island grounds and buildings. Don’t forget to browse the gift shops for unique items. Meet your historically-attired docent and take a guided tour of the Blennerhassett Mansion. All aboard for the return trip to the mainland before heading home.

Includes: Transportation, lunch, sternwheeler transportation, horse-drawn wagon ride of the island, guided tour of the Blennerhassett Mansion, museum admission, meal gratuity, and taxes.

Cancellation Policy: 30 days prior to departure – Full refund less any non-refundable charges (i.e. theater tickets, service fees, etc.) unless notification of difference is noted on the tour description. NO REFUND after 29 days prior to departure.

Walking Code: 3 This tour includes moderate physical activity. The itinerary blends some longer days with shorter days and more leisure time. Walking tours, as well as walking slightly longer distances, up stairs or on uneven walking surfaces should be expected.

A ferry will pick you up at Point Park, located just three blocks from The Blennerhassett Hotel and Spa. The sternwheeler will take you on a 20-minute ride down the mighty Ohio River, dropping you off on Blennerhassett Island.

Take a seat in the back of a horse-drawn wagon for a tour around the quaint scenery, enjoy concessions, and visit the Island’s eclectic gift shop!

Founded in 1863, West Virginia is a fairly small state in the eastern United States . This state shares borders with Pennsylvania , Maryland, Virginia , Kentucky , and Ohio. The Appalachian Mountains run through the state, making it the state with the highest average elevation east of the Mississippi River. As the Mountain State, most of the state is covered by oak, poplar, maple, beech, black cherry, pine, and spruce forests, among others.

Today, many of West Virginia's major communities sit along the Ohio River due to their easy access compared with communities higher in the mountains. Despite its small size and rugged terrain, West Virginia has strong social services, and affordable real estate, making it an ideal and budget-friendly state to consider retiring in.

The cost of living in Charleston is 15% below the national average, with the median home price sitting at $156,900 (according to the Economic Research Institute). This community of 48,415 is the largest in the state and also has a very low crime rate. The Camden Clark Medical Center is open 24 hours for emergencies, and the Wood County Senior Citizen Association has two locations offering nutrition, events, and information services for those 60 and over.

Wheeling's cost of living is 19% below the national average and 3% below the state average, with the median home price being $110,900. 26,900 residents call Wheeling home, and crime rate is very low in this community. Wheeling is commonly considered West Virginia's birthplace, and the downtown is designated as a National Heritage Area. Weirton also has a few medical centers, including the Weirton Medical Center - Main Hospital and the Greater Weirton Senior Center, which offers senior programs and services to those who reside in the region.
