Black Forest Tours News
Rhine River Cruise – Private Shore Excursion
Many of the Rhine River Cruises offer shore excursions to the Black Forest or Alsace region from the ports in Basel, Breisach or Strasbourg. But instead of joining the regular (cattle-car) bus tours run by the cruise ship company taking you to the ‘Cuckoo Clock Village’ which is set-up just for the cruise ship company, many people prefer a (private) guided tour. The advantages: you get to do and see things large bus groups can’t. You can void the most touristy places – if you want to. With us you can get off-the-beaten path and go where the locals go. And you can ask me as many questions as you like.
Meeting Point
We meet you at the cruise ship port in Breisach – this is where our tours start/end. One thing to keep in mind – Breisach is a bit of a drive from the Black Forest, so depending on how we lay out the tour we will have anywhere from 45-90 minute driving time to get to the Black Forest
Half Day or All Day Tour
Depending on your ship’s departure time in the evening a Half Day Tour might be all you can do. But no matter how many hours you have to spend in our area, we try to create the perfect day for you.
How many people?
- The minimum number of people in your private group is 4.
- The maximum number you can bring is 15.
What’s included? And what is not?
- Private Black Forest tour with a guide, driver & vehicle
- We meet you at your cruise ship in Breisach
- Our Guides: Professional, English-speaking, Certified by the Black Forest Park Association, Members of the German National Tourist Guide Association (BVGD)
- Our Vehciles: Safe and Clean Vehicles, all vehicles pass strict mechanical inspection by the German TÜV (Technical Security Association), special passenger transport insurance, air-conditioning, non-smoking, mobile phone charger on board, umbrellas on board, bottled water on board, child safety seats, parking fees included, tolls and other road fees included, distance & fuel costs included
- Not included: lunch costs & entrance fees

THE BLACK FOREST &
Rhine valley river cruise, combine a spectacular driving tour of the enchanting black forest with a romantic rhine valley cruise on board croisieurope's river cruise ship, ms la boheme from strasbourg., in the black forest you will be treated to quaint half-timbered buildings to admire as they nestle in delightful historic towns and villages. there are also dramatic gorges carved by the river rhine, plus of course those magnificent cuckoo clocks and the famous black forest gateau. this scenic tour is based in the delightful village of hornberg, set in the beautiful gutach mountain valley, in the district of reichenbach in the heart of the black forest., schwarzwaldhochstrasse is the ultimate driving road of the black forest region and no visit would be complete without a drive on it. at about 3,000 feet/900m, the 44-mile/70km stretch of the b-500 road runs along the ridges of a low mountain range. along the way, you can look up at the 4,900-ft/ 1,493m feldberg, the highest point in the black forest, and down into some spectacular ravines. , the river rhine is truly one of europe’s greatest international waterways. enshrined in the culture and literature of the six countries through which it passes, no other river in the world has so many old and famous cities on its banks. from the comfort of your first-class floating hotel you will be transported through landscapes that change constantly from the gentle and placid to the most sheer and dramatic. there’s nothing quite like the anticipation of gliding up to the promenade of a river port; where you can explore tiny cobbled streets and alleyways leading past quirkily crooked, half-timbered houses to quiet, intimate squares. a cruise on the river rhine will be a memory to treasure for always..

Breisach, Germany is a small little town on the banks of the Rhine just a short distance from Basel, Switzerland and across the river from France. Surrounding this little town are rolling vineyards and the Black Forest. Inside the town you will find an old-world charm in the pastel-hued buildings and cobbled streets. You would never know that this town was almost totally destroyed in WWII. Even though it is small, Breisach, Germany will be a delightful stop on your river cruise if you decide to go out and explore or just stick around the town.
Your river cruise will have an included excursion that might take you out of Breisach to explore other fascinating nearby towns. You might have the opportunity to take a bus further into the Black Forest to Hofgut Sternen (a Black Forest resort village) for a chance to taste their famous Black Forest Cake, Ham or enjoy the Cuckoo clocks. Or, if you want to be a little more active you might opt for a bike ride or hike into the Black Forest. But, what if you want to stay and explore the town of Breisach. What is there to do?
In Breisach
Tourist office.
The tourist office is a wealth of information for touring the town. They will be able to provide you with walking tour maps to see the sights. Plus they will have great suggestions of where to eat and shop.
Breisach Cathedral–St. Stephen’s Church
This beautiful church (built in the 1200s) overlooking the town is one of the main attractions. It is a bit of an invigorating walk to get up to the church but the views will be well worth the effort. Along the path, boards are posted that will give you even more information about Breisach’s history, interesting facts, and historical places. Once at the top you will love the Romanesque-Gothic architecture outside and in as well as the impressive art.
Rheintor–Rhine Gate
The Rheintor was built in 1678 and is one of the most beautiful preserved fortress gates in Europe. Inside you will find the home of the Museum of City History. Exhibits start way back in the Stone Age in which Breisach was inhabited by the Romans. During your tour of the museum you will experience Breisach from the 1st century through all of history up until the destruction of the town in 1945. You will love seeing all the actual artifacts from the different time periods and how they have worked to bring the history of their town alive.
Wine Tasting and Celler Tours
Breisach is surrounded by vineyards which produce many delicious wines as well as the further areas of the Rhine Valley. You will fine upwards of 600 different wines in this area. So, time experiencing this part of German culture will be time well spent. While in Breisach, you might want to take a tour of the underground cellars of the Geldermann Private Winery (Geldermann Privatsektkelleri) or the Badonian Winery (Badischen Winzerkeller) and then taste some of their wonderful wines. (Make sure to check the website to verify tours have resumed.) Badischen Winzerkeller is right next to the Tourist office.
I hope that you are inspired by this little town of Breisach, Germany. It will be a fun place to spend a few hours exploring during your river cruise adventure.

Breisach is a gateway to the fabled Black Forest region, built on a basalt rock outcropping in the Rhine plain. It is located in one of the warmest parts of Germany, across the river from French Alsace, famous for its wine growing. But Breisach, too, can boast about its wine: it is home to Europe’s largest cellars, with a storage capacity of more than 160 million liters. The most prominent landmark of Breisach is the Romanesque-Gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Its two towers are visible from throughout the city and from the Rhine.

Where You'll Stay
Operated by croisieurope river cruises.
When river cruising was a privilege for the wealthy, CroisiEurope developed an affordable cruising concept offering the best value in river cruises at great prices, and appealing to every traveler. This was possible thanks to our involvement in all the steps: from the simple idea to the construction of our ships, the assembly of our crews, and the full integration of sales and logistical (purchasing, cuisine and maintenance) teams. Your pleasure is our priority, and we aim to provide just that in the comfort of our boats and the quality of the service you receive when dining. We call on all our expertise to better serve you, including working in partnership with some of the most renowned French chefs, such as Paul Bocuse and Marc Haeberlin. Owner and operator of 43 ships, the CroisiEurope river cruise company is proud to be the greatest river ship owners in Europe. Although the Rhine and its tributaries and the Danube remain the major river cruise destinations in Europe, we knew how to develop creative itineraries that appeal to everyone. But we also knew it was important to expand our cruises to unique destinations. These include the Seine and the Rhône, of course, but also the Tisza in Hungary, the Guadalquivir in Spain, the Douro in Portugal, the Dordogne and the Garonne in Bordeaux. Don’t forget our more exotic destinations as well: the Mekong in Vietnam and the Irrawaddy in Myanmar. Our founder’s pioneering spirit has been passed down through the generations. After having developed the novel concept of a coastal cruise on the Adriatic Sea aboard a 200-passenger, top-comfort and high-tech ship (La Belle de l’Adriatique), CroisiEurope revamped the feel of cruising the French canals in Alsace, Burgundy, Champagne, Provence, and Paris with a fleet of new, modern and comfortable hotel barges. With just 12 cabins, these barges bring you to the heart of each one of these regions to discover the hidden treasures awaiting you. As a French company, we are also proud to be launching a river cruise on the Loire. In a worldwide premier, our new revolutionary boat equipped with a paddle wheel will bring you into the interior of a mythical region like you have never experienced before. Alsatian, but French. French, but European. In 2014, we also launched the New MS Lafayette Class of intimate vessels with only 82 guests. CroisiEurope knew how to become global by providing cruises in some of the world’s most fabulous destinations. And it’s with this passion, friendliness, and professionalism that we welcome you aboard our fleet.

The Black Forest was a waste of time. It's a bus ride through the forest then stop a place where one of the two world largest Cuckoo Clocks are. There's a hotel and a couple shops. Didn't do WWII Colmar, but, the town of Colmar is a must do.
I did the Black Forest in December. There was snow and beautiful mountain views. We stopped at the St. Peter Abbey as well as the Clock Shop - bought some great German folk and Christmas music CDs there. Don't go if you don't like riding through mountains. There are no mountains where I live so for me it was a treat.
Did the Colmar village tour (included when I took it). Beautiful traditional Alsatian architecture and the Unter dem Linden museum. It has the fabulous Isemheim altarpiece which is definitely worth a look.
Not a WWII buff so I didn't the WWII tour.
Colmar WWII was fantastic. The museum is a must-see if you have any interest in WWII. Even if you don’t, it was so interesting to see the places where Audie Murphy was, and hear his unbelievable story. You also see a good bit of picturesque Colmar and the lovely countryside.
Ditto on the Colmar WWII tour - One of the best excursions we have taken w Viking. As Americans, we often fail to remember the impact that WWII had on the European countryside and citizens . Well worth it.
I wish the cruise lines would offer a tour of Neuf-Brisach from Breisach. Neuf-Brisach is a fortified town built after the 1697 Treaty of Ryswick, when france lost the town of Breisach. It is one of the historic fortifications designed by Vaubon. It is only 7 km from Breisach.
Another tour from that port could be to nearby Riquewhir, maybe combined with the Colmar tour.
We took the town of Colmar tour. Excellent. Walked the picturesque Little Venice section of Colmar. Beautiful.
Next Rhine cruise I'd do the Colmar WWII tour which everyone says is el primo.
I did not do Black Forest (too long on bus for too little, although wife liked it) but I walked off the ship after lunch and explored the town of Breisach, the best part being climbing up the hill for the overlook and walking back down the other side to the ship walking through the river park. Doing stuff like this on my own is why I love river cruising.

AMA used to combine both Colmar and Riquewihr as one option, but their itineraries only mention Colmar now. We really liked Riquewihr -- it is a one-street village, very cute and that street is lined with shops offering free wine tastings plus a couple that had fresh macaroons [real coconut macaroons, not those namby-pamby Parisian macarons ;) ]. Colmar is a good size town with beautiful old half-timbered buildings; it touts the fact that the sculptor Bartholdi was born there and has a museum with a model of his Statue de la Liberté . We didn't have a ton of time doing both. If I had to chose only one it would be Riquewihr, but I would also be happy doing just Colmar.

Agreed, good suggestion. We also explored Breisach after lunch and enjoyed it very much. The Viking front desk was handing out nice, large maps, with several suggested walking routes and sights clearly indicated.
On our Rhine cruise we did the Black Forest excursion in the morning and Colmar village in the afternoon. We enjoyed both. We liked the scenery on the way to the Black Forest location, drove through several small villages and stopped at a scenic overview. We indulged in Black Forest cake for me and a bottle of local beer for DH. On the bus ride back our excellent tour guide told us about her growing up years in East Germany, fascinating look at history. She made the trip back seem a lot shorter because of her interesting information. Our trip to Colmar was also wonderful. We signed up for the "gentle" walking tour and got to ride around Colmar in a small tram-like train. We had time on our own to visit the large church which at the time was housing the Issenheim altarpiece along with other art while the museum was being renovated. We felt that both excursions were well worth our time (and money in the case of Colmar).
We did the Black Forest tour and Colmar Village in September - enjoyed both. LFS517 reminded me of one of the best aspects of any of the included tours - the guides. They all shared bits of their personal lives and experiences which was so interesting in addition to the expected historical info.
Don't mean to hijack this thread but I wanted to ask the host why the thread on "how to contact your river cruise" doesn't include Viking? Am I missing it somewhere?
Don't mean to hijack this thread but I wanted to ask the host why the thread on "how to contact your river cruise" doesn't include Viking? Am I missing it somewhere?
Good catch! [Easy for me to say, I didn't write the article...] I'll try to get the relevant info and add a post to the thread.
Update : Boy was that a lot of work! I found 8 river cruise lines that are mentioned in CC's articles describing and comparing lines but not listed in the "contact" article. I've probably missed some others – but I'm sure their fans among this wonderful community will point them out so I can add them too!

St Stephan’s Minster
Visit Breisach – Self Guided Tour
River cruises provide excellent maps for a self guided tour when you visit Breisach. First, walk from the dock up the short but steep lanes to the fortified Old Town. Your first stop is the cathedral of St Stephan’s Minster inside the walls of the Old Town. St Stephan’s Minster was built in the 1200s. From St Stephan’s Minster there are pleasant views over the new town below and the rolling hills of the Kaiser-stuhl. On the square beside the cathedral is the Rathaus Breisach (City Hall) .
View from St Stephan’s Minster
In the middle of the small Old Town is the Radbrunnen Tower (Radbrunnenturm) with its strange exterior workings for this early 1100s water well pump. At the far end of the Old Town is the festival area and the Tulla Tower, which forms part of the theater stage. Descending from this end of the Old Town to the Rhine leads to the Rhine Tower (Rheintor) and a pleasant walk back to the river cruise dock.
Rathaus, City Hall
Get to Breisach by Rail
Since the destruction of the bridge on the Rhine during World War II, rail transportation has been restricted to the German side of the town. You can get to Breisach by rail from Freiburg in 30 minutes. You can also get to Breisach by rail from Riegel am Kaiserstuhl, north of Freiburg. To the west, Colmar, France is a 30 minute bus ride.
Hofgut Sternen, Black Forest
Visit Breisach – Hotels
Options for hotels when you visit Breisach include the towns of:
Get to Breisach by Rhine River Cruise
Breisach is not near any major airports. The main way visitors get to Breisach is on a Rhine River Cruise. The river cruise industry has made Breisach a standard stop for cruises between Basel and Amsterdam, but passengers do not start or finish voyages here.
Rheintor, Tower on the Rhine
Breisach River Cruise Shore Excursions
Most Rhine River Cruises provide two options for river cruise shore excursions. The most popular option is a bus tour shore excursion through the Black Forest. The route takes you to picturesque view points and through numerous small villages such as Sankt Märgen. This river cruise shore excursion stops at popular tourist centers such as Hofgut Sternen. At Hofgut Sternen you can watch artisans create traditional Black Forest cuckoo clocks. The cuckoo clocks are displayed and sold too. If you find a clock you like, they will ship it home for you.
Eckartsberg Ruin
The second option for a river cruise shore excursion is a bus tours to the quaint historical village of Colmar, France. Visitors who aren’t on a river cruises can coordinate tours of the Black Forest and Colmar through tour operators in Freiburg, Germany.
St Margen, Black Forest
Breisach Weather
Breisach weather is sunny and warm in the summer, while winters are cloudy and cold. Average highs in the July and August are around 80 F (27 C), while average lows are 60 F (16 C). In December and January average highs are a few degrees above freezing, while lows hover around the freezing mark. Rainfall is slightly higher in the summer months.
Visit Breisach – Background
Breisach is a very small town on the German side of Upper Rhine River. Across the river is Neuf Brisach, France. Germans pronounce the name “bry sack” and the French call it “bree sack”. The town had early Celtic and Roman occupations and was part of the Holy Roman Empire. Breisach has seen a boom in tourism since becoming a standard port of call for river cruises between Basel and Amsterdam. Most of the Rhine River Cruise shore excursions head from Breisach by bus to the Black Forest near Freiburg, Germany. Day trips also visit the picturesque town of Colmar in France. Old Town Breisach is located on an ancient fortified hill top with pleasant views over the rolling hills called the Kaiser-stuhl (Emperor’s seat). The area around the town is excellent for growing grapes and making wine.

I have visited Breisach in December of 2022 and there was this unique sculpture of skeletons, soldiers and bees and what not. It was under a building and was circular in shape. I am trying to find more info on it but can’t seem it get anywhere. Wondering if you could help? I think it was under St Stephens church but could be wrong.

We will be stopping in Breisch on a Viking cruise. Not too interested in their bike tour of the Black Forest - would rather do our own. Are there other options for tours?

Beautiful Colmar would be doable:

The bus ride from Breisach station to Colmar takes about half an hour. (From the Breisach boat piers to Breisach station it's a 15 min. walk or a short taxi ride) The bus schedule:

From: Bahnhof, Breisach am Rhein
To: Colmar, Theatre
Viking river boats have bikes and a passenger group that would be able to do a mountain bike tour? That is news to me.
From Breisach you could do a bike tour of the Kaiserstuhl wine region.
Thanks. I didn’t realize a bike tour would leavefrom Colmar. I’ll look at options from there.
We loved our Ebike tour of the "black forest". Even though we never got into any forest much. Saw all types of countryside, charming villages, back roads, asparagus farms, etc etc. Would do again in heartbeat. Only downside was older gentleman that should not have been on tour kept falling and held up guides.
I don't see anyone mentioning what would be a bike tour of the Black Forest, and I'm sure that few would be able to participate because the Black Forest is a mountain range.
You can do relatively flat tours along Kinzig Valley or Elz Valley, but these are too far for a start from Breisach.
Hi --- we are going on the Viking Rhine river cruise this October and are interested in booking the e-bike Black Forest Trip. Is that the one you went on? It says it takes 8 hours....is it a long time being transported from the ship to the tour start?
