Italy

Enlighten the senses

Italy bike tours.

Of all European countries, none draws visitors over and over again like Italy. A peninsula extending into the Mediterranean Sea, Italy consists of 21 diverse regions of villages and picturesque towns set amidst rolling hills, vineyards, mountains, lakes, cliffs and islands.

Each region has its unique charm, but all share the “Italian” view that life should be taken at a slow pace with time to enjoy conversation, food and drink.

Together, Italy’s regions boast the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. Packed with historical treasures, Italy’s cycling tours allow visitors to indulge in the spectacular natural landscape.

“The area was absolutely wonderful... just one adventure after another going through the small villages and beautiful towns.”

Italy Bike Tours

I taly is pedaling paradise playground for both the avid and more pleasure-seeking cyclist and is considered one of the world’s most heavenly cycling destinations. Why? Biking in Italy has everything any cyclist craves. Biking in Italy offers: a vast network of quiet roads through gorgeous and varied landscapes that literally zigzags through the history of Western Civilization, a modern culture that is rich in cycling history and considers cyclists heroes, a diverse and well-oiled traveler infrastructure and finally a country that knows how to please the most important cyclist need–their pedaling appetite. Italians share the bicyclist’s credo: Live to eat and eat to live!

Any bike tour in Italy you choose will offer unique landscapes, dialects, and culinary traditions. Cycling in Italy appeals to the essential pedaling desires: mountain landscapes in the Alpine valleys; surprisingly flat roads through Apennine pastures and rice fields along the Po river; an endless series of beaches and rocky shores along the seaside, famous art towns with their historical and architectural heritage; not to mention countless archeological sites and beautiful ancient villages atop hills and mountains.

As the Italy bicycle tour specialists since 1989, Ciclismo Classico has MORE unique Italian bicycling itineraries in MORE Italian regions than anyone! Furthermore, we have many Italy bicycle tours in our repertoire so if you do not see what you are looking for,  just ask! We have either done it before or would love to create a unique Italian Bicycle Tour itinerary just for you.

The Experience

Italian culture.

Italian culture is steeped in the arts, family, architecture, music, and food. Home of the Roman Empire and a major center of the Renaissance, culture on the Italian peninsula has flourished for centuries. Italy is very diverse, but one of its most peculiar characteristics is the fact that every city, even in the most little, is full of things all concentrated together in a very small space. One finds themselves surrounded by historical buildings, churches, statues, ruins, pieces of marble, shops, bars, bakeries, cars, all stuffed in a few square feet. It’s a very intense, sensory experience.

Italian Food & Wine

For Italians, food isn’t just nourishment, it is life. Family gatherings are frequent and often centered around food and the extended networks of families. Wine residues were found on a large ceramic jar that was stored nearly 6,000 years ago in the caverns of a cult site known as Monte Kronio in Sicily.

Landscape of Italy

There are Alpine peaks and hills that face the sea. Villages perched on mountains. There are plains where corn and wheat, sunflowers and vegetables are grown, there are rivers and lakes, terraces built along the sides of the hills where fruit plants, olive trees or vines are grown.

Why ital cycling bike tours.

Richard Brink

Richard Brink

Richard Brink, a bicycle industry veteran is Ital Cycling Bike Tours North American Project Manager. Richard is excited to share his love of cycling in with fellow cyclists from North America.

Giuseppe Barenghi

Giuseppe Barenghi

Giuseppe Barenghi, owner of Ital Cycling Bike Tours. He has been cycling for decades, competing in almost 150 granfondo events and other types of races. It gives him great joy to share his passion for cycling and his love of Italy's special places with you.

What an unbelievable training camp experience with those I now consider family. The knowledge of the cycling areas and culture combined with feedback and coaching on the road were unmatched. Giuseppe, Ian, Frederica, Cristian, Pavel, and Andrea put together an experience I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Cycling culture of this area, beautiful views, and great roads is truly unreal. You will be challenged beyond your comfort and you will become a better rider because of it. I can’t wait to get back and enjoy another holiday with this team

We spent 5 days recently in Italy with Ital Cycling Bike Tours and our experience was amazing. On our first day, Giuseppe met us in Belagio and immediately from the start we realized that we were going to have a wonderful holiday, We are not major cyclists, but nothing was too much for Giuseppe. He adapted very well to our needs and is an extremely caring, kind and honest person. We toured all the nearby villages and learned all about the history of the area. He was extremely punctual. Although going to the Dolomites was a last minute request on our part it’s an experience that we will never forget. Our 4 days in Garda was equally outstanding. Nothing was too much for Giuseppe and really he made our Italian try a wonderful experience. Thank you from your Canadian friends Pat & Dennis

What can I say about Ital Cycling Bike Tours and the Garda area besides, when can I move in?! This isn't a cycling tour company, its a cycling tour family, the entire crew is a close knit group of friends and family with an intimate knowledge of the Garda, Valpolicella, and Verona areas. Giueseppe, Federica, Ian, Cristian, Pavel, Andrea, and all the other support staff that I have forgotten (Sorry!) are exceptional. The cycling in the area is wonderful, the roads are in phenomenal condition and the terrain offers everything from rolling vineyards, to lake shore views, to 2 hour uphill battles with Monte Baldo. You will not be disappointed by putting your cycling holiday in the hands of this great crew

Change of pace on Florence stay. We enjoyed this trip as one day of our stay in Florence for our honeymoon. After days of sleeping in, walking around sight seeing and eating, we needed a change of pace and some real exercise. It was great to get out into the countryside and fresh air. Even the short and sudden rain storm was a fun part of the ride. And if you aren't looking to push yourself at all, then you can skip the hill climb and ride the van to the top. About half the group opted for this. Lunch was delicious and the castle tour with wine and olive oil tastings were the icing on the cake. I highly recommend this.

Highlight of my trip. What an amazing experience and exceeded my expectations hugely. Started off with a castle tour where our guide Alex/ Alessio told us about the history of wine production. Followed by wine tasting. I found this very interesting and you can really tell that Alessio knows his stuff. This was followed by a challenging but incredibly enjoyable bike ride around 25km. We managed to stop at the best view point to take pictures. I think what really made the difference was our tour guide. Alex went out of his way to reccomend the best places to eat in Florence and was very hospitable. This definitely the highlight of my trip I’m Florence.

Friendly staff, love adventure. Had a great day biking around the Tuscan hills and visiting a castle with great wine and olive oil tasting. The staff were very friendly and mindful of safety measures on the road. Highly recommend this tour

Mario was a great host! A brilliant was to see the city :-) I was the only person on the bike tour, but Mario was a great host and tour guide! We did the city bike tour through the streets of Florence and he was very knowledgeable and able to answer all my questions. I'm so glad the tour went ahead even though it was just me! A brilliant way to see the city. I was also able to reschedule to a different day at short notice :-) Thank you, Mario!

Wonderful Bike Tour in the Hills of Chianti. This tour was absolutely amazing. In the morning hours we did a nice bike tour along the streets of the Chianti region. The lunch was very tasty as well as the wine later in the castle. Our guide Alessio told us about the history of wine production and was very entertaining and fun to spend time with. If you want to experience the countryside of Toscana and the wine, we can definitely recommend this tour! Grazie mille Alessio, alla prossima Sven and Alessia.

Put the fun between your legs! I really enjoy wine and even more so, I love cycling! What better place to do so, than Tuscany! And what better group to do it with than Tuscany Bike Tours! Not only are the guides knowledgeable and safe but fun! All the guides brought their own unique and enjoyable personality to the day. They were keen to provide additional information about the area and didn’t hesitate to answer questions. Try it and make sure you do the hill climb! Wine will fuel you for it! Thanks for the fun day to all the boys at Tuscany Bike Tours! And a shout out to Tom for leading the peloton! Grazie! Miranda from Canada!

An absolute MUST! We had an absolute blast riding Vespas through Tuscany! The moment we walked in the door we were met with the guides' charming and witty personalities. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, exactly how you would imagine it. I was nervous about driving a Vespa for the first time, but it was incredibly easy and the guides make sure you know what you are doing before they put you out on the road. The castle was stunning! There were only two of us on the Vespa Tour that day, so we had Angus all to ourselves. He was so fun and super knowledgeable. We loved his British accent:) Jacopo was our driver and guide through the castle. He was amazing and so fun! We enjoyed hearing him sing along to "nostalgic" American music and teaching him American slang (Bye, Felicia!) He was such a good sport! Definitely one of, if not the highlight of our 2 weeks in Italy.

Best day of our entire Italy trip! Book this Vespa tour!!! My husband and I will never forget the experience. We had a blast and we both agree it was the absolute highlight of our entire Italy vacation! The guides are fantastic... knowledgeable and funny! They also made me feel extremely comfortable and safe on the Vespa. I had never been on one before (or on anything similar) but they teach you how to ride it in a parking lot before hitting the road. I caught on quickly! The day was just such a blast. The castle/winery tour complete with a wine and olive oil tasting was wonderful. Lunch was delicious. And the ride itself through the Tuscan countryside was something I’ll never forget. Will recommend to anyone I know traveling to Italy!

Can't say enough. The vespa tour was the highlight of our trip. The guides were both knowledgeable, friendly and easy to talk to. The castle and the scenery were awesome. They quickly rearranged the tour due to impending rain. Lunch h was incredible. Best pasta I had in our entire stay. Highly recommend this tour, thanks to our guides and their attention to our safety.

Part 2: Practical things to know about self-guided bike tours in Italy

Is a self-guided bike tour for you.

If you’re interested in an Italian cycling vacation but find guided tours too expensive and going alone too risky, you might consider a self-guided tour.

Self-guided cycling holidays can generally be selected from a menu of tours that the company offers. These come with pre-planned routes and designated hotel stops. The tour company will handle booking your hotels and transferring your luggage between hotels. They can also arrange bike hire for you if you need it.

You will receive a detailed packet at the outset, containing daily route maps, usually in digital format but many companies can also provide physical copies for the old-school cyclists out there. These maps include clear turn-by-turn instructions, elevation profiles, and overall maps. Additionally, you can request GPX digital files for each day’s route if you prefer using a Garmin for navigation.

With the right operator, the routes will be well-thought out and designed to take in the best of the region. Guiliana from Cicloposse says, “opting for a local Italian operator on a bike tour in Italy ensures you get an authentic experience that makes it easy to discover hidden gems.”

Things to love about a self-guided bike tour

  • All the admin hassle of hotel bookings and luggage transfer is dealt by someone else. You can also save time on route planning – which is particularly handy in Italy. Valeria from Genius Loci Travel points, out, “In Italy, unlike other European countries, there aren’t many specific signposted routes, which means route planning can be tricky.
  • There’s usually much more flexibility with start dates and some companies will even tailor the routes to your requirements, for example providing extensions or shortcuts depending on how long you want to ride each day.
  • You don’t need to wait for the group; you can ride to your speed and stop when you want
  • If you have a problem, companies usually offer 24/7 telephone support.
  • If you pick a local company, you can get the local’s experience. Anna from BikesPlus/Cycle Europe  says “We know the area and the country, we personally test the services (including hotels, restaurants and experiences), and we create the best possible cycling routes and travel experience, as only a local can do.” Mauro from Bike Tour Sardinia echoes this. He says “We can organise meeting the centenarians or the shepherds, have a dinner with them at their houses or other truly memorable local experiences.”
  • And finally, Michele from Bike Basilicata makes the point that “By choosing a local operator, you’re supporting the local economy and encouraging sustainable tourism practices. It’s a way to ensure your travel has a positive impact on the regions you visit.”

Key things to be aware of

  • You won’t have a guide on hand, so you’ll need to be happy following a GPS route yourself and will be self-sufficient for sourcing meals and coffee stops. Normally, however, if you want suggestions, your tour company can share some favourite restaurants and coffee shops with you.
  • You won’t have a support van accompanying you. This means that it’s up to you to reach the next hotel each day, regardless of whether you encounter unfavourable weather or run out of energy/inclination to ride. That said, self-guided tour companies will provide an emergency hotline, and in this case the tour company will assist you as much as they can. For example if you encounter bad weather or run out of energy, they may be able to suggest public transportation or organise a private taxi to pick you up.
  • You’ll be expected to be able to do basic bike maintenance such as changing punctures.
  • Self-guided tours usually have a minimum of just two travellers. This means that you probably won’t be riding in a group. So self-guided tours are great if you like independence and freedom but not so good if you’re looking for group comradery.

Planning your self-guided bike tour in Italy

Select the right region for you.

Italy is a beautiful country full of stunning regions and fantastic food, but you’re going to need to select a particular region to visit. Here are some questions that should help you narrow down the choices.

  • What kind of terrain are you looking for? Flat and gentle or hilly and mountainous?
  • Do you prefer beautiful coastline and coastal towns or immersing yourself in the mountains?
  • Are you a food enthusiast looking to visit a pasta region or do you want to explore a wine region?
  • Are you looking to experience culture and history?
  • Are natural landscapes your priority or do you prefer urban life?
  • Are you after charming villages, picturesque towns or vibrant cities?
  • What level of accommodation do you like? Family-run B&Bs, boutique hotels or luxury hotels?

Best time to visit for cycling holidays in Italy

It’s very possible to cycle somewhere in Italy at any time of year. However, the best time to visit Italy is during spring and autumn. During these seasons, the temperatures are normally not too hot or too cold, the scenery is vibrant and (with a bit of luck) the weather should be ideal for cycling.

In spring, many parts of the country start to warm up, ranging from around 15°C to 23°C . It’s still probably not short sleeves weather until at least late April. Around Easter, Italy gets busier, and prices increase. Be aware that in the high mountains in the north of Italy, many passes will still be covered by snow; often until mid-June. By that time though, much of the south will be gloriously warm.

During the summer months, particularly July and August, temperatures are high, usually around 27°C, but often reaching over 31°C during the hottest part of the day. Visitor numbers are at their peak during this time and it’s worth noting that many Italians take the entire month of August off work. As a result, many businesses close, making the cities quieter.

Autumn brings a gradual cool down in temperatures. September is very pleasant (and popular!), with average temperatures around 25°C. October is also still popular in most parts of the country. You can expect autumnal colours and some sunny days, but also be prepared for wet weather. Towards the end of October, the season ends in many parts of the country, so be aware you may encounter closures.

In winter, the temperatures in the south of Italy usually stay mild. However, northern Italy is typically wet and cold. Many of the mountain passes become blocked by snow and are best avoided.

Choose the duration of your trip

Those looking for a beginner cycling tour often start out with a cycling holiday that’s just a few days of cycling; perhaps 3-4 days. When you aren’t used to multiple days in the saddle, it’s a great idea to start out with this kind of length.

Once you’ve been bitten by the cycling bug, have done a weekend cycling trip and are eagerly planning your next cycling holiday, it’s time to look for something a bit longer. 7 day cycling holidays are probably the most popular length trips.

From there, the world is your oyster and many tour companies happily cater for 10 day, 14 day and even longer cycling tours and holidays throughout Italy.

If you’re looking for a group departure, you then need to find a company with dates to match. Or an operator that offers private departures.

Consider your fitness level and experience

When considering the length of your cycling tour and region you’re going to ride in, it’s important to also consider your fitness level.

Italy’s terrain varies enormously, from huge mountains to rolling hills, hilltop villages, dramatic coastline and easy-going riverside cycle routes. Your legs and lungs need to be up to the challenge if you’re going to take on the more vertical of these options!

During a guided bike tour, you can join the support van or shorten the ride, but on a self-guided bike tour this is usually not possible. To prepare, it’s a good idea to try riding on consecutive days and practice on the same type of bike you’ll be using during the tour. There are significant differences between riding mountain bikes, road bikes, and hybrid bikes.

Bear in mind the average distance and elevation gain you’ll encounter on the tour itinerary, and make sure to experience riding a similar distance before joining the tour.

Research cycling routes and itineraries

One of the great things about asking a local Italian company to plan your cycling holiday is that they are the experts on the routes in their area. They know them like the back of their hand and so can suggest routes that fit what you’re looking to achieve from your trip. Elisabetta from FunActive says “on a self-guided tour, we ensure you’re riding the best routes and getting the most exciting travel experience.”

If you are looking for a DIY tour in Italy, then it’s time to block out some time and dig into the detail in order to avoid the crowded towns and find the quiet roads and beautiful points of interest along your route. There are lots of route planning sites out there and we always suggest checking resources like Google Street View too. You can find more tips here.

You’ll also need to think about whether you’re going to carry your own luggage or arranging luggage transport.

Highway code and travel information

As ever, it’s a good idea to check current travel information before you book and travel. For UK visitors, the UK government travel information pages for Italy are here . You should also read and follow Italy’s highway code.

Tips for going on a self-guided tour in Italy

We asked our panel of Italy cycling experts for their top tips for planning a cycling holiday in Italy. Here’s what they said

  • Elisabetta from FunActive : “It’s not all about the riding; don’t forget to make time for cultural stops and time to enjoy the food and wine!”
  • Guiliana from Cicloposse : “Our top tip for anyone considering a bike tour is to thoroughly assess the difficulty level offered by the company and inquire about the specifics of the bikes provided. A crucial aspect of any bike tour is having access to high-quality bikes equipped with all the necessary gear. It’s essential to evaluate the company based on the information they provide about bike specifications and equipment. By doing this, you can ensure you pick a holiday that gives you an enjoyable and comfortable biking experience throughout your tour.”
  • Anna from BikesPlus/Cycle Europe : “Search for less popular destinations for your Italy bike tour; you’ll be surprised by the marvellous treasures you’ll discover.”
  • Valeria from Genius Loci Travel : “Find out where your operator is based before booking your trip. Are they based in the country themselves or are they reselling someone else’s trip? Because we live in the area and operator our own trips, our guests get the best experiences and can feel they are looked after every single day of their journey.”
  • Mauro from Bike Tour Sardinia : “Have a look at the hotels, not considering just the stars but whether it’s family run and whether it offers something special.”

And finally!

We hope you have a wonderful time riding in Italy. In the comments below, do share your tips for cycling trips in Italy – and also if you’ve travelled with any of the operators mentioned above.

Italy Bike Tours

Anyone who’s been to Italy and tasted the pasta (or olive oil, or wine, or truffles) will insist that words fail to capture the nuances of flavor. “It’s just different,” they say. If the most treasured souvenir from an Italy vacation is reaching culinary enlightenment, tasting your way through this country reveals that it grows ever bigger with delightful discoveries instead of smaller.

On a bicycle tour, you’re even closer to the land that generously gives forth Piedmontese hazelnuts, Nebbiolo grapes, Sicilian lemons, and Arborio rice. From the snow-capped peaks of the Austrian-influenced Dolomites to the olive groves of Tuscany and the inviting coast of Puglia, Italy is teeming with unique landscapes, dialects, and culinary traditions. But one thing is universal across these regions: an inherent sense of hospitality rooted in living well and a kind of culinary reverence that every Italian—and every visitor—can appreciate.

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Umbria Cycling Tour Details

Umbria cycling tour overview.

Amidst the rolling green hills of Umbria, you'll encounter impeccably preserved medieval treasures such as Montefalco, celebrated for its wines, Assisi, graced by Saint Francis, and the lively "Art City" of Perugia. Cycling through the Tiber Valley and Umbrian hills reveals a landscape rich with olive groves, golden wheat fields, and breathtaking vistas. Indulge in the finest Italian cuisine, where truffles are the star, and savor the region's exceptional local wines.

While the broad valley between Assisi and Spoleto offers a rare stretch of flat terrain, the ancient villages you visit are perched atop hills. The cycling routes include longer, gradual climbs on the first and last days, while the other days feature shorter but occasionally steep ascents, some with gradients of up to 10%. A few sections traverse unpaved roads. This adventure requires a basic level of fitness, with just one climb per day and shorter rides (25 to 30km daily), leaving plenty of time for immersive sightseeing experiences.
